Greetings, all
Not sure what there is to say that hasn’t been said.
- Prior to the game, Larry Drew said, among other things, he wanted the team to score in transition, rebound, move the ball on offense and not focus so much on the Big Three that the other players beat you. Well, the Hawks did one of those things.
- The Hawks scored 18 fast-break points, 10 in the inconsequential fourth quarter. They rarely made much of an effort to run after Heat misses or turnovers. They were out-rebounded 50-27. Part of that is due to the fact that Miami didn’t give them many chances to rebound, but 50-27 is kind of hard to explain away. Josh Smith and Al Horford combined for six rebounds. Smith was out chasing LeBron James, so that explains maybe part of it, but Horford’s three rebounds is a season low. Jason Collins had one.
The ball didn’t move well, again.
“Miami’s a solid defensive team,” Drew said. “They do a great job, particularly on the first side of the offense. You have to force them to shift their defense and then you have to attack. We didn’t do that. Once the ball came out, we settled again for three’s.”
- Damien Wilkins showed up, playing physical defense on James. He was 6-for-8 from the field and had 14 points, nine before the fourth quarter.
“To me, it felt or seemed like we were conceding the fact that [James] was making shots,” he said. “He was way too comfortable pulling up for jump shots, coming down and just doing whatever he wanted to do, just showing way too much respect. … I think we could have done a better job showing a little bit more resistance.”
- Hawks have lost 17 games by 10 or more points, which is more than they permitted either of the past two seasons.
Horford: “We’re going through a real rough patch right now. We’re going to keep fighting and we have to figure it out.”
- Through the first three quarters, the Hawks were 5-for-22 on shots from 16 feet or longer – not counting Jamal Crawford’s first half-ending heave – including one stretch when they missed 13 straight in the second and third quarters. They were 3-for-21 before Jeff Teague and Wilkins hit long jumpers at the end of the third.
“We got off to a good start, I think,” Horford said. “We kind of lost our focus in the second quarter. After that, we just couldn’t get back in it.”
- Ineffective nights for Joe Johnson and Crawford. Johnson was 4-for-8 for nine points and Crawford was 0-for-4 for zero points. It’s Crawford’s first scoreless game since the final game of the 2006-2007 season, when he played half a minute after coming back from a broken ankle. As was noted by some posters, he was minus-26 in 24 minutes. Crawford has been having his best shooting month, percentage-wise, since December, but obviously a rough night.
While we’re at it, Horford was minus-27 in 29 minutes and Smith was minus-31 in 27 minutes. Interestingly, would you believe Bosh had a better plus/minus than James (32 to 23)? Wilkins was plus-10.
- Hawks have had fewer free throws than their opponent for the past seven games. After playing largely exceptional defense in the first nine games of the Kirk Hinrich era – 42.8 percent – the Hawks let Denver and Miami shoot 53.5 percent in the past two games and 50 percent from 3-point range.

LD sucks, the ASG sucks, Rick Sund sucks. We need a real coach. Jeff Van Gundy, Bill Laimbeer, Tom Izzo, Larry Brown, or bring Woodson back. They would all be a lot better than LD. Finally, we should be drafting Lucas Nogueira with that 1st round pick that we gave away along with our last summers 1st round pick for Kirk “Lateral Move” Hinrich. Jordan is already a rotation player he just needed to play and if Lucas Nogueira is there with our pick that Washington will be using, this becomes the worse pick in history.

The Hawks are going through a rough patch right now I think they are going to end the regular season on a good note. I hope that they start to string togetther some win with them having 13 games left. This team is way more tanlented then what they have showed these last two games they need to ply like they did when they played The bucks on the 3-15-11 and the bulls on 3-2-11 those are they guys that I like to watch play cause they show heart confidence and pride for that name across their chest. The guys that have seen these past two game seem less confident and not having fun together. I love this team and I am with them no matter what happens I am always a supporter of them. GO HAWKS we need a win on Sunday and start put the peices back together for the playoffs.

“I just disagree with conjecture about someone’s family matters. Unless you know everything that was said (or thought) in that family, then you are just guessing.
And, once again you have the right to say it. I just think it’s tacky.”
If you read some of those alleged Sharon Drew posts they really are epic. If they are not authentic, somebody hated her so much they spent hours upon hours making that ish up. And it’s highly entertaining. She is supposed to have called Kendall Marshall’s parents obese and said people are jealous of the Drew family because they fly around in private jets and take lavish vacations.
Thing about it, Sautee, this is sports. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry that provides entertainment to consumers. If you are going to be part of that industry, things you do and say will be scrutinized. You say I’m talking about their private family matters. LD II’s decision to bone out on North Carolina mid-season was very much in the public domain.
Why do I think it matters? I started off as an LD supporter, but the more I saw the players were not listening to him, the more I wondered why. So I did a little digging, and came to the conclusion that LD Sr. simply is not a leader. For one thing, he’s not an honest person. Coach K always said in coaching, you always make eye contact because it’s harder to lie to someone when you are looking them straight in the eye.
LD obviously protected Bibby and himself tonight from the embarrassment that would have come from Jeff Teague having a big night at Bibby’s expense. LD has overriding agendas that take precedence over the success of the team I have loved so many years. I would like to see LD and his vapid, narcissistic family head back to Encino and never show their faces in my beloved ATL again.

*** [re-posted from last blog] ***
Hawks in ‘10 waited ’til the playoffs to quit.
‘11 Hawks quit by my recollection…..on Feb 8 this season.
*[ the Philadelphia game at home]
After new year:
the Hawks began 12 and 4 / prior to Feb 8th
since, the Hawks are 6 and 12. *(corrected from last blog)
*[8 losses by doule digits or blow-outs]
*[4 of their 6 ''wins'' were by only 3 pts or less / or OT]
The Hawks are too small.
They can’t or won’t rebound.
They need A true Big, nay two true Bigs.
*[everyone knows that,,,,,by now,,,,,I hope]
They need ”men” who will rebound regardless of position!
Team Jump Shot is the most apt yet funniest moniker ever…ever !
Team Jump Shot / shot only 25 % (give or take a fraction) tonight.
Starters + Jamal attempted only 8 FT’s, everyone else attempted 15.
*[referees tried to do a cosmetic job on the books]
Still, ” TJS ” can’t or don’t get to the line.
Tonight I watced Josh (and others) look at open cutters,
disregard and then launch.
This is a team of quitters.
Most must go…sooner than later.
When all is said and done,

This garbage is really unacceptable. I would much rather see a Hawks team like the ones of several years ago where the players, in general, are more inexperienced with much fewer wins but actually gives it their best effort to win every night. I can live with a team that loses by 20 points if that team is giving it’s best effort but comes up on the short end because of a talent deficit.
On the other hand, it turns my stomach to watch a team that is far more talented than those Hawks teams of the past get their butts kicked by 20 points because they don’t feel the need to play defense and on offense they feel it’s just too much work to do anything other than hurl up long-range jumpers not caring that none of them are falling. Then, basically after every game we hear the same lame comments to the effect of: We know that we are a bunch of wusses and we should really stop being a bunch of wusses every single game.
Speaking of hurling, that’s exactly what this lazy team of disinterested players who couldn’t give less of a damn about playing hard on most every night makes me want to do – hurl!

You put I.Thomas on the Dawgs & they go to the final four. (perhaps)?
……………
I’m just tired of Atlanta and Georgia teams not performing well on the big stage….and Washington was horrible in the 1st half, not shooting the ball well and UGA was controlling the tempo and they couldnt put any real distance between them and the Huskies when they had the chance. They choked away that opportunity, and went on to lose the game. I do respect the fight at the end but, it was still a lost. The beat goes on smh.

Grandad you are a horrible scout of talent. You sound so much like Rick Sund sometimes that it is sickening. I liked what I saw of Bernard James against Texas A&M but I would not call him a beast. Festus Ezili of Vandy is not ready for pro ball I saw him against a bunch of undersized guys on Richmond and he did not dominate, he could not even get 10 boards against undersized guys. I have also seen Keith Benson’s name thrown around on this board and he does not play well against guys NBA sized or his own size. The draft is bad for big men. There are a couple but none of them have come up on this board, glad you guys are not scouts for the Hawks, or are you with some of these picks?

We just had a good old fashioned butt whipping game last night. Miami came in and after the first 5 minutes took over the game. It was the LeBron James night. LeBron from the top of the key. LeBron from the wing. LeBron from the corner and it seems nobody on the coaching staff thought to double team this guy and get the ball out of his hands. On one play during a break it was like LeBron asked Jamal what was his good side for the poster he was going to be on.
It was one of the few times this year I felt the guys just really quit. I mean JJ, are you serious? It must be okay for LD to allow Smoove to stay outside and shoot jumper after jumper. Does anyone thing Popavich, A Johnson, Jackson or even Collins would let one of their bigs do that?
It’s like you said MC, “Not sure what there is to say that has not already been said”. Well, for one thing, the Detroit Pistons are not a good team so maybe we can get a win.

Keith Benson will be a decent pick up for the hawks. If he put on about 40lbs on that frame of he’s, he will have a decent nba career. Charles Barkley and other former nba players think highly of this young man.
I guess you were waiting for Keith to have a bad game so you will have a reason to degrade him. OK BIG SHOT……….what couple of 6′11 or 7′0 centers in this year’s draft class we should be scouting?

As for Keith Benson the guy played 4 years of college and did not get any better. You are still talking about a guy that needs to gain weight to be able to hold his on as a rotation player in the NBA. How is he any different than Jarvis Varnado who is the all time shot blocker in college. That was Varnado’s big issue also he needed to gain weight so now he is overseas. Yes, the Heat picked him but they had no use for him until he gets stronger. Like I said in a earlier post the guy will spend just as much time in the D League and overseas as the NBA.
We should be looking at 1 guy and 1 guy only Lucas Nogueira of Brazil. He is called Bebe. He is thought to be the best prospect from Brazil since Nene. Nene, Barbosa, Varejao, the books still out on Tiago Splitter but he has a chance to be a player. This guy is next in line. Below is a picture of him standing by Dwight Howard, he is a legit C. He has been described as Tyson Chandler with a jumpshot. There is no other big man worth a pick, but I am sure they will pick some D League candidate and you guys will jump for joy. With all of those legit C prospects that were available last year you guys are talking Keith Benson, what a joke. He got beasted by a 6″8 freshman and he is suppose to be someone to get excited about.

Jeff Teague must start if you want Damain out there too that’s fine but he must start to effect the point guards on the other team. The other nite against Denver was tough with him having to play against both Lawson and Felton. But without him in the game effecting the tempo and now since Kurt can’t make open jumpers it is best to bring Kurt and Jamal off the bench to together with Marvin being the post presence against smaller small forwards. Kurt can’t push the ball for a face pace the offical SOS HELP SIGNS ARE UP EVERYWHERE!

At least we are consistent with these blowout home losses. Oh yeah “Soft” people are taking their sons to see this STUFF! superiorblogman, you are a joke young man. In my previous comments I’ve mentioned Jonas Valanciunas-c, Lucas Nogueira-c, Keith Benson-c, Tyler Zeller-c and Mike Tisdale-c.
You and I both know that the hawks that Jonas Valanciunas and Lucas Nogueiro will be off the board even if we had a 1st round pick. Lucas Nogueira could be a hot head like Josh Smith so I wouldn’t want him near our facilities.
I really like Tyler Zeller but I’m afraid he will stay in school which leaves up with Keith Benson. That 6′8 freshman you keep talking about could have done the same thing to any of those centers because he has a coach who knows how to attact their opponents.
Don’t give me that D-League crap because if they were good enough to play at the nba level they would not have been sent there in the 1st place. This league is about good coaching. Get the wrong coach your team is DOOM no matter who you draft. Hire Bill Laimbeer and he will make Keith Benson a star in this league.

There is absolutely nothing to be encouraged about with this team. They simply stink. They will most definitely fall to 6 in the east and probably 7th before the season ends. Look for a sweep in the first round and the season will fade into oblivion. Poor ownership, terrible front office and a coach that is only on the bench because he was a cheap choice. And no on the court leadership. I’ll take Horford and the rest of the team could be traded. This team is headed nowhere but down.

What a dysfunctional bunch this has turned out to be ! I have no idea where to start on LD except to say he lost the team some time back. Josh is out of control. He doesn’t hustle and just makes one dumb pass after another or jacks up jumpers like he’s Reggie Miller. Oh but he will make one great pass or a fabulous steal and slam and everyone on this blog will forget the other 5 stupid chances he took to make one spectacular play. If Smoove were a bank, for every dollar he loaned out he would only ask for a “polished,” “brand new” dime to be payed back. So much for that headband changing Joe’s sorry game, and would someone please tell Jamal that he doesn’t increase his chances for a new fat contract based on how many shots he puts up no matter how cold he is. Good God. I know shooters keep shooting but Geez.

A symbol of the Hawks’ growth bit the dust Wednesday. Starting in the 2005-06 season, the Hawks had won more games than they had the previous season for five consecutive seasons, all under former coach Mike Woodson. They became the seventh team in NBA history to accomplish that feat, a fact that the team proudly trumpeted. However, the Hawks’ 102-87 loss to Denver on Wednesday was their 29th, matching their loss total for the 2009-10 season and ensuring the streak will stop at five.
It was their 16th loss by 10 or more points, which is more than they had in either of the past two seasons.

What other team out there change their starting line-up on a game by game basis. Nobody. Our offense is very predictable. Its worse than iso-joe. All the do is post up joe, josh, or al and everyone else just stands around. When is the last time we got an easy shot. At least iso-joe we have our best scorer getting the ball. How can a guy be all star only getting 8 shots. But this is what everyone wanted. The motion offense where everyone gets the ball. Honestly it seems like josh is the only one getting shots. Al he is okay, but you cant build around a post jump shooter with no moves. Al when in the post does the same move. If a double comes or someone is in his way, instead of passing to the open player he shoots anyway. The team needs a real coach period.

at the risk of sounding like an apologist, i’m not sure it’s entirely fair to be critical of drew for making lineup changes if you were calling for lineup changes a few weeks ago and ripping drew for not “shaking things up” as he indicated he would. i concede i don’t remember who said what, but that was the general tenor.

Please respect my Grand-Daddy! He’s the best I ever had and he once coached High School ball. G-Daddy really knows this game and talent.
GD was a big proponent of Taigo Splitter this last draft and turns out he might be a player in this league. But, respect the man he’s a blessing to the blog. Hey, GDaddy call me later, we got 13 games left to choose from.
I have no idea what happened to my Hawks. The biggest thing I can point to is, a lot of moderate to serious injuries.
Surgery for Joe and spinal injuries to Al and Marvin.
Al is really, really banged up this year. His spine and 2 ankle sprains has taken the lift out of his legs. He came back way too soon as did Joe and Josh on all their ailments. We are worn down physically and are not very healthy. But, you don’t hear anyone complaining.

Let’s face it. Until there’s new ownership, this is what we’ll have to expect from the Hawks and Thrashers. Teams that are run as cheaply as possible with a notable lack of direction or plan. The Hawks will be the Buffalo Bills of the NBA- cheap coaches, poor drafts with an occasional run of luck (ala Marv Levy-bargain coach who turned out to be a great one). The players have talent but don’t respect the last 2 coaches because they could see that ownership didn’t know what they’re doing. The owners apply bandaids to problems instead of truly fixing them.

How many times have the Hawks been blown out at home this year? I bet not even the worst teams in the leagues have had as many lopsided home losses as Atlanta has.
Since the Hawks are not one of the worst teams in the league, the only conclusion you can draw is that they have many nights where they simply don’t show up.
Unless this team pulls a shocker against the Magic in the first round, Larry Drew needs to be canned. He’s not an NBA coach.

Lets take a trip down memory lane. This was the blog on Feb 9, 2011 entitled “Good teams dont take ugly home L’s like this” .
So the next time the Hawks say something along the lines of “These things happen” (and we know they will), the retort should be: “No, they don’t. Not to ‘good’ teams.” MC.
Ironically, that sounds similar to what LD said. All teams go through struggles blah blah blah.

790 The Zone!
The host made these comments pretty much verbatim:
There is only one way to create flexibility and turn this team around.
Joe is untradeable with 5 years left on his contract. Al is a cornerstone of this franchise to build around. That leaves the highlight factory himself, Josh Smith with 3 years and 11M to 12M per.
Several GM’s would love to have this guy coached by an elite coach who can control this guy. Josh being a home town guy is not something I really want to do, but what other option is there. Is Josh coachable? He is very inconsistent as a player.
Move him for a true PG and a true Center, like a Demarcus Cousins and that’s a great start for this team. Then go with Teague and Hinrich for the time being at PG until that can be addressed. IDK about Derrick Favors yet, Tyler Hansborough can’t help you at Center, he is a 3/4.
But see what can be done with Josh and Marvin, maybe you can get a NeNe. IDK if even he would be worth losing a Josh Smith though.
Or, find a great coach who can control Josh and develop his game furhter.
A caller called in and said, get a whip and chariot to run Sund out of here along with any move made.

THE HAWKS HAVE THE WORST FANS OF ANY PRO SPORTS TEAM IN AMERICA!!!! I was at the game last night, and I am not even exaggerating, 95% of the jerseys worn were Heat jerseys. This team frustrates me as well, but can you imagine playing a HOME game that feels like an away game? Terrible for the confidence of this team.
Hawks are 8th in payroll in the league, 5th seed in the east and 22ND IN ATTENDANCE IN THE LEAGUE! More people go see bottom feeders than the Hawks. I hate the owners too, but I would not drop a dime into a solid playoff team that has worse attendance than the golden state warriors, detroit pistons, toronto raptors, and other garbage teams.

Its hard to keep this moniker. I still can’t believe we gave away JC2.
The fans complain about management and ownership. The ownership complains about the fans. The relationships surrounding this franchise continue to become more and more toxic.
I think we’re past blow it up/new coach discussions. ASG and well lets face it, the team by way of their performances, have so alienated their own fan base at this point I don’t see an NBA franchise in Atlanta much longer.
I’m not saying its easy to play in the NBA. I know each one of them is an incredibly talented athlete and it requires a serious commitment to play at that level. I know Rick Sund would rather win a championship than NOT win a championship (unless this is some sort of “The Producers” kinda thing) What I am saying is that whatever commitment is inside this franchise, just isn’t enough to be successful. They either lack effort or wisdom or both.
Love watching this team play well. When they do they are one of the most exciting teams in the NBA. And its not even the bad games that make it so excruciating to be a Hawks fan. Its that they have had exactly the same issue for three years now, and still have no answer for their lack of consistency.
HERE IS THE ANSWER: Play as hard as you can every night.
Why is that so hard? If the fanbase watched a team (and a front office!!!) make good decisions and really leave it all on the floor every night, a loss is just a loss instead of it being indicative of a lack of heart. You wouldn’t have to do all this soul searching.

This city has suffered through garbage season after garbage season for 30+ years. The only team in town that consistently played respectably was the Braves in the 90’s. The Hawks and Falcons occasionally have good seasons. Face it – the fans in this town have nothing much to be proud of in their teams. It’s not convenient to go downtown to a game and downtown Atlana ain’t much. Put all together, and this is why our fan base is what it is.

i don’t even watch the Hawks on a regular basis but the problems is, and always has been since ‘Nique, is that the Hawks have had ZERO superstars year in and year out.
Joe Johnson – solid all-star, NOT a superstar, Al Horford, solid PF, NOT a superstar
Josh Smith had the athletic gifts to be a superstar but he’s not right in the head still
and to the idiot Billy Knight who thought Marvin Williams deserved a #2 pick after a year at UNC….Marvin Williams will NEVER be a superstar.
Hawks have to blow it up and hope they get lucky in the draft, or make shrewd trades, over the next few years. This bunch peaked with their first round win over the Heat two years ago.

Thanks Ken, but like I saw another blogger, the Hawks are going to destroy the Pistons and everything will appear good. Take a look at Tyler Hansbrough from the Pacers. He sucked last year and pretty much this uyear because he was getting spot minutes. Now, he is playing well.
Teague played 44 munutes against the Trailblazers, 37 minutes vs Heat and Denver. If the Hawks were not getting blown out, he would not have played against the Heat. Again, coach, what message are you sending your point guard… you have to trust him in the good times and the bad. When he is not shooting well, he is doing the other things – like holding down the other PG’s. Just start that kid and what happens, happens….
Marvin is looking very aggressive off the bench. I don’t mind him shooting because he is looking very confident with his shots. I still think Marvin minutes should be PF and SF. Wilkins is one of the smartest players and he needs run too. Twin is a waste and give his minutes to Hilton.
One thing about coaching, you have to make adjustments, but the best part of coaching, you make them make adjustments to you. I said before the game, I would have taken a page out of the Celtic’s play book and run Teague and LeBron. He could not drive past him, and would have to shoot over the top. I would have given him so many different looks to try to confuse him. Joe was very effective in the post, and would have continued to milk that cow along with Josh. Josh should be plastered under the basket until he finds his shot.
My favorite player began to struggle once they blitzed from his left (Vick) and other teams picked up on it. The coaches that did not make the adjustments (Giants), got burned. When LeBron was hot, adjustments should have been made.
Lastly, we should make teams adjust to us. We need to be a running, quick team and make teams adjust. If Miami wanted to start Dampier, we should have run them out the building. Also with Horford shooting J’s on the offensive end, Josh and Joe should be there to crash the boards.
Even when we play the Magic, run, run, and run. That should be our style to get easy baskets. That is what we do best. I cannot figure Jamal out, but hey, when he is hot, ride the tide, when he is cold, put his butt on the bench.

As a Hawk fan, they have always struggled with attendance. We had a superstar and we still struggled. (Lou Hudson, Pistol Pete, D. Wilkins), we had several good teams and we still struggled. Yet, the ownership last year showed us NO COMMITMENT TO WIN. We watched Chicago, Miami, Boston, etc get better and we sign Josh Powell. The only thing worse than bringing Woody back was to get his assistant. LD needs to be fired ASAP! I think the fans will come out then… I would. I went to my only game only after the Hinrich trade. Now, they have to make a change at coach.

Perhaps the players can pool their monies and buy the entire 100’s level seats and fill them with their fans or some warm bodies from throughout the city.
Empty the school houses, nursing homes, Marvin’s Grandma and all her crew, the grocery stores and churches. Pay these people to wear their jerseys and chant boldly, loudly and proudly: MVP MVP every time Joe touches the ball. I imagine Joe can afford to do this himself.

James play-by-play that led to another embarrassing defeat:
START OF 1ST QUARTER (12:00)
JAMES IS GUARDED BY JOSH SMITH
James 3pt Shot: Made (3 PTS) Assist: Chalmers (2 AST) 07:12
James Jump Shot: Made (5 PTS) Assist: Wade (1 AST) 04:45
James Running Layup Shot: Made (7 PTS) Assist: Wade (2 AST) 03:49
James Fade Away Jumper Shot: Made (9 PTS) 01:53
James Running Layup Shot: Made (11 PTS) Assist: Chalmers (4 AST) 01:32
James Jump Shot: Made (13 PTS) 00:23.2
START OF 2ND QUARTER (12:00)
Williams Substitution replaced by Smith, now guarding James 06:54
James Jump Shot: Made (15 PTS) Assist: Bibby (3 AST) 06:12
Crawford Substitution replaced by Wilkins, now guarding James 06:04
James 3pt Shot: Made (18 PTS) 05:29
James Turnover: Lost Ball (2 TO) Steal:Wilkins (1 ST) 04:44
James Free Throw 1 of 2 (19 PTS) 01:07
James Free Throw 2 of 2 (20 PTS) 01:07
IN SUMMARY: James abused Josh Smith in the 1st and 2nd quarters scoring 15 points. He scored 2 points against Marvin late in the 2nd quarter and made a 3 pointer against Damien. However, after Damien caused a TO against James, his scoring dropped to only making a pair of FT near the end of the half. It was obvious that Damien affected James scoring in the first half.
During half time, you would expect LD to make the necessary adjustments after observing the first half but he did not. Instead, he started the 2nd half the same way he started the 1st, with the same lineup.
START OF 3RD QUARTER (12:00)
JAMES IS (STILL) GUARDED BY JOSH SMITH
James Jump Shot: Made (22 PTS) Assist: Wade (4 AST) 10:17
James 3pt Shot: Made (25 PTS) Assist: Wade (5 AST) 07:41
James 3pt Shot: Made (28 PTS) Assist: Bosh (3 AST) 06:47
James Jump Shot: Made (30 PTS) 06:05
James 3pt Shot: Made (33 PTS) Assist: Bibby (4 AST) 05:42
James Running Jump Shot: Made (35 PTS) Assist: Bibby (5 AST) 04:36
At this point, Miami has a 30 point lead with score 72- 42 with 04:36 min left in the 3rd quarter. The game is officially over and it is now garbage time. LD finally decides to substitute Smith with Wilkins now to guard James.
This is yet another example of LD slow to respond coaching pattern. He publicly tried to CYA by stating that James was also scoring against Damien but when that happened, it was mostly during garbage time. LD also never doubled or trebled team James. He just sat and watched James go one-on-one having his way abusing Josh while looking clueless. He never took a defense page out of the Heat play book to doubled or trebled team James the same way the Heat did to JJ and it worked.
I swear I thought it was Woody coaching on the sideline as he had the same coaching pattern last year.

I know we have nagging injures. And I thought we played well thru JJ, Mo, Jamal, and Marvin’s injuries at the first of the year. The Celtics have been decimated by injuries. Chicago, a 41-41 team last sesaon, has played long stretches without Noah and Boozer. Even Miami lost pieces 4 and 5 for them in Mike Miller and Udonis (still out).
But they all keep winning.
Al and Josh have moved away from the basket so they don’t take the pounding.
JJ doesn’t do much of anything anymore.
This is all about coaching. Coaching is not just about X and O’s, but about how to handle your players, rotations etc.
And Coach Drew has lost this team. If he gets it back, great, let’s win in the playoffs.
If not, we are just waiting for him to resign or be fired. Quickly.
When Bibby and Mo were playing terrible for weeks on end, his solution was to play them more.
When Teague plays well, his solution is to play him less.
When Josh disrespects him, his solution is to baby Josh.
Do the math people. Since the middle of January or so, even with JJ’s little hot streak, we’ve been losing ugly. 41 to the Hornets
34 to the Sixers – both at home
25 or so to the Lakers
21 to the Heat
I don’t know how many to Chicago at Chicago
15 to the Nuggets
Our +/- is lottery pick territory for the last 30 games. We stink. LD has sunk the ship. No one else.
LD’s job is to make Josh acountable or jerk him out. Get his attention.
Same with JJ and Josh.
He gets 1.5m no matter what. I’m sure he’s just waiting for the call

Re: Trading one of our “stars” for the necessary pieces
It will be very difficult to get great value in return for Joe.
That leaves Al and Josh. Both are relatively young, very solid players with reasonable contracts.
Some say Al is the cornerstone of this team, so that leaves Josh.
I am beginning to wonder if Al is SOFT (some say, the entire Hawks squad is soft, but Al might be like Charmin Ultra Soft).
Might the Hawks do better trading Al for a starting-quality Center plus a 6th man like talent?
(Is the PG position really one of the Hawks biggest needs? Teague coming along + Hinrich gives the Hawks an above-average duo.)
Al may fetch better value than Josh (though I think Josh should be able to fetch real good value).
If the Hawks need to get tougher, especially down low, it seems like Al should be moved before Josh.
Not really advocating moving either … just think about the hypothetical aloud.

I am a Horford fan, but this time i have to agree with Darrell Starks and Big Dave: what the H*** is wrong with him?? he is not even the shadow of the BOSS he was in his 1st 2 years. Charles Oakley, Antonio Davis, Kevin Willis, a poor Karl Malone was his projection; now he is becoming another SOFT, jump shooting, big man! He is our own version of Chris bosh, only not that offensively talented, with better defense (when he choose to play defense).
I don’t think his problem is in the lack of size, or his lack of post moves. His 1ry problem is that he has become convinced that, since he is a 2-time all star, he can decide where to play and how to play: He doesn’t want to play center anymore!!! he can dominate 75% of the centers in this league but he doesn’t want to. He can be a top 5 rebounding force but he doesn’t want to, because he would have to bang downlow at defense. He only wants to be at the periphery on offense, just like Charlie Villanueva!!
Another problem that he may have is that the desire to win and the competitive fire may be gone after 4 years of a lousy team atmosphere. To play defense, rebound, and shut down your oponent at this level you have to be motivated all the time, either by positive or negative reinforcement. If ATL is going nowhere this year, already went to the all star game, signed a contract, and the coach does not demand respect, why bother when no one else does?
He still is my favorite player, but all those jump shots and the “let me watch how every body goes to the rim without even attemp to alter the shot” is getting in my nerves. I want him to be Karl Malone, not Charlie Villanueva.

Does this team really need a superstar? You look at the Celtics do they have a superstar, look at the Spurs do they have a superstar? No
They have former superstars that now know how to play as a team share the ball, make open shots, attack. I don’t really want to compare this sorry excuse for a team to the best in the L like the Spurs and Celtics, but their roster shows a point to be had, it really isn’t essential to have one go to guy. These Hawks have to learn to play unselfishy and I’m not sure this current roster will ever become that. Our 3 best players are their own worst enemies, Josh Smith is too selfish, Al Horford is too unselfish, and Joe Johnson is too indecisive. That needs to change within the next 3 weeks, and I doubt it will happen so I see a first round exit on it’s way. Whether this team is blown up from a sweep in the first round, something needs to happen this offseason.

I’m still down with Joe, the problem is the offense, i see complaints about his scoring output, but no one breaks down the shots. Its like looking at the box score seeing 9 points and saying Joe sux. The offense get joe the ball in the post, around screens at the free throw line, and the occasional backdoor pass that worked before teams made adjustments. I know this and im just a fan. All places are very easy to double. Joe barely tries to take the double team, he usually passes. If we had someone on the team who could drive and kick shots would come easier. we have that but the coach doesnt use it. If we had at least a Scott Skiles type of coach we would be 100% better. I hope Rick Sund takes this as a learning experience, you get what you pay for.

If the Hawks couldn’t pull it together for the Heat then I don’t know if they will be able to pull it together for the rest of the season; not to mention the playoffs. Without a new head coach I believe that the Hawks, as they are currently constructed, have hit the ceiling for their potential and are REGRESSING.

@ Jae Evolution – former superstars are still better than never will be superstars . having multiple players whove made all nba teams makes a difference .
Amare and Melo are ALL NBA caliber players not simply all star reserves
Our top 3 players do not play there best ball consistently enough for all 3 to remain our top players.
Thats what the knicks were thinking they gave up Felton Chandler,Gallinari a big all who may one day make an all star team but they will never be ALL NBA caliber players.
Thats essentially what we gambled on with Josh and Al and we lost .

The Hawks are -51 in 9 games played in March. That’s -5.67 ppg.
That’s worse than Minnesota, New Jersey, and Toronto’s season averages.
We are 3-6 in those 9 games.
Josh is shooting 41.1% from the field and 28.6% from the three point line in March.
This after Josh shooting 20% from the 3 point line in Feb.

Rev,
From reading the postgame quotes, and listening to LD’s post game, the Hawks know why they are losing.
LD goes over the issues with them at the start of every game and at half-time of every game (rebound, get out and run, don’t settle for jump shots). But for some reason, during the game, the players don’t do it, and LD can’t make them do it.
Jae Evolution,
I don’t really want to compare this sorry excuse for a team to the best in the L like the Spurs and Celtics,.
Why not? Rick Sund compared the Hawks to the Spurs earlier this year.
Mykhalc,
this group of players (not a team) is simply tired of playin’ with and for each other…PERIOD.
They probably have different reasons, but I think JJ, Josh, Al and Jamal are all fed up. Maybe they are fed up with each other, maybe they are fed up with the coach, maybe they are fed up with ownership…but either way, I agree with you.
And it starts with our leadership. HC, and 3 captaints.

But the problems, and the Hawks’ difficulties in correcting them, perhaps point to a more fundamental issue revealed in how Johnson’s declaration was communicated.
Said forward Josh Smith, “I think that we’re afraid to hurt people’s feelings.”
A flipside to one of the Hawks’ greatest strengths — that players genuinely like each other and enjoy being around one another — may also be holding them back at this crucial juncture. While team co-captains Smith, Johnson and center Al Horford have leadership qualities, a willingness to hold teammates accountable for their effort and performance doesn’t come naturally to any of them.
Damn, I would have loved to see the Hawks get Ben Wallace at the trade deadline.

If the coach cannot make them play then he should take them out of the game!! Which means it is still his fault! This guy should have never been hired!! This was a bad experiment and now the team and fans suffer!!
The reason the Jordan Crawford trade was not bad is because you need a real coach to allow the young guys to play. Teague is barely getting minutes as it is and playing well. Drew and his staff are not going to develop any players no matter the talent. The only players that would start for the Hawks under Drew’s or formerly Woody’s staff are lottery picks and basically no dramatic developement takes place.
The addage goes you get what you pay for. The ASG will not hire a proven, quality NBA caliber coach who will develop, demand, and take the team to task. And coaches like these(Byron Scott, Avery Johnson, Jerry Sloan) are not coming to Atlanta with this ownership group because they no the ownership is about making a profit and not winning a title.
BTW San Diego State looked pretty good tonight, they may make the final four!!

“captaints” was a Freudian slip
But that is what they should be called.
Another issue with the accountability is if players wont do it, the HC has to do it. But LD was their therapist when Woody was here, and he has not shown any accountability either. So there is no leadership on the sidelines, and there is no leadership on the court.
I’ll say this again. I know its drastic, but I think LD should strip all 3 captaints, and give Kirk the position. Captain Kirk already has a ring to it, and I think he would be less concerned about hurting feelings, plus I like when the captain is a PG, since he is supposed to be an extension of the HC on the court.

I could buy this whole injury deal except:
1) I’m watching the team implode. I’m not watching a well coached, disciplined team following the coach’s game plan, but just coming up short because of injuries. I’m watching total disregard for the Coach and his game plan by most of the team.
And that is the Coach’s fault for allowing it usually.
2) I’m also watching perplexing substitution patterns, especially as the season has worn on, but really throughout the season. A substitution pattern that makes no sense, and predictably to almost every Hawk fan, puts in a position to lose.
I mean, we all groan when Jamal comes in at point. We know we are about to digress. Doesn’t LD?
So that’s why I don’t buy the injury excuse. I thought we played well until about the midway point of the season with injuries.
But I think that was just hold over from last year. The further away we get from last season, the more confused and chaotic we have become.
And BTW – the typo “Bibbly” was classic, can’t remember who did it a few posts up!

4. Live with Teaguer for another year.

6. Cut Marv, give him away, buy him out, trade him, anything !
7. Not again…Go find the right Coach this time:
[in no particular order]
* Ben Howland
* Mike Budenholzer
* Leonard Hamilton
* Adrian Dantley
* Stacey Augmon
8. Keep Cap’n Kirk & D. Wilkins
9. Retain glue guys…Zaza, Collins, Armstrong

For the last four years I have watch the Atlanta Hawks. Coach Woodson made the team better every year. He got the best out of the team that they could give. And then he gets replaced. The organization is sorry, instead of evaluating what would be needed to get to the next level, they fired coach Woodson because they think there team is better than it is. The new coach hasn’t and won’t do as good as coach Woodson did, and thats not a bad reflection on his coaching ability its a refection on the talent he has to work with. As I said, the hawks organization is SORRY! and they let go an excellent coach that if he had the right people would have brought a championship to Atlanta.

The Hawks can be contenders if they bring in a 4th player who is as good or better than Joe, Smoove, and Al (or, for that matter, if Teague develops into such a player). But I don’t think they can seriously contend by just surrounding this “core” with complementary pieces. None of the Hawks’ medium-sized three (calling them a big three is a bit of a stretch) is consistent enough to make me think that they alone can carry a real contender together.
