Hawks-Heat game thread
Greetings, all-
Hope all are well. Ken here. A few notes, some Mike Bibby quotes and we’ll get it rolling.
1) Larry Drew said it’ll be the big lineup. Jason Collins, Al Horford, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Kirk Hinrich.
2) Drew didn’t say he was committed to starting Jeff Teague with the “regular” lineup. He said it was still to be determined. It sounded like Teague would be the designated starter against teams with small, quick point guards.
3) Drew said he wants the team to be more committed to running, particularly after the rather sedentary effort against Denver. Other keys: defending the 3-point line, not letting the non-Bosh/James/Wade guys go off, rebound well, force Miami to defend.
4) Drew on Horford: “We definitely have to get him more shot attempts, we’ve got to get him more touches and we’ll try to get him back on track tonight.”
5) Some Bibby quotes:
On buying out his Washington contract: “It is (a risk), but you never know if there’s going to be a lockout or not. There’s a lot of talk about that. I just felt that being here would be a better situation for me as far as giving myself another chance to even get another contract. I just felt it was a better decision for me to be here.”
On the trade: “This is a business. They felt they needed to change the point guard position and that’s what they did. Somebody’s trash is somebody else’s treasure.”
On coming off the bench: “I don’t mind that. I like to win games regardless of how things go down. I don’t worry myself with points, shots, stuff like that. I just do whatever it takes to help win the game.”

Whatever man. You’re just being a hater at this point. Damien has played consistently well on defense with the Hawks from day one, and as his minutes have increased his confidence on offense has correspondingly increased to the point where he’s hitting shots within his comfort zone consistently. You’re putting way too much stock in the talent evaluation skills of NBA GMs, who are well known for being bad at evaluating talent.
Teams are dumb for not signing Damien, and LD is dumb for not playing him more. Period.

Bigdave . . I don’t dispute that. Half of the team are definitely scrubs.
It’s just that people shouldn’t act like some of these guys would even be in the rotation, if they were on another playoff caliber team.

I disagree. Damien is far from a scrub.
Against Portland, Damien had 12 points. Against Philly, he had 12 points, Against the Lakers he had 10. And he plays solid defense too.
All this despite not getting consistent minutes

Not a single fan on here was talking about adding Damien Wilkins to this team during the summer. You know why? Because he’s basically a scrub.
Has he played well the past 2 or 3 weeks? I’ll give you that.
But before then, he was one of the guys who had the worst +/- rating on the team.
I’m just not going to be under the delusion that because he looks halfway decent on one of the worst benches on the league, that dude was a gem or something. He’ll get props from me for having a good game tonight. But don’t hype that dude up like he’s some sort of impact player or something.
He’s not the ‘09 version of Flip Murray.

Woody tried to force these guys to play the right way. And for some of them, that meant doing things that they weren’t comfortable to do.
Drew doesn’t demand this.
But I still say that it’s these players that need to “man up” . . not the coach to “coach better”.

I wonder what the excuse machine (L.D.) will have to say after this loss. Hmm, let me guess. How about “we didn’t have that sense of urgency”, “we settled”, “we didn’t establish ourselves in the post”, “we were seduced into take long jump shots”, “we just didn’t have enough juice tonight” (L.D. loves that “juice”). Maybe, he’ll even throw that the defense was “poor” and mention that we got “out-physicaled” (which is not even a word). I’m sure some of those excuses will be a part of Drew’s post-game comments tonight.
Then, if Joe is asked about the loss, he’ll probably just play if off like it’s normal and mention that “it happens, man”, “we just didn’t have it tonight, man”, “the jump shots weren’t fallin’, man”, “we was out of rhythm, man, but it’s just one game”.
Same old story. Same old Hawks. This is a team that would get smoked by the 08-09 Hawks and probably struggle to beat the 07-08 Hawks. What a disappointment.

Because we weren’t smart enough to think of the idea.
I don’t know what his plus minus rating was before that, but the fact that he only played with the scrubs when he first got here would probably account for it being bad.
