Bucks at Atlanta Hawks: Hawks staying ’small’ against ‘big’

L.D. is using the same lineup as Saturday vs. the Blazers except Al (who still says he’s good to go) subs for Zaza. Remember that Drew sent out the Twin lineup against the Bucks in the previous three meetings, so I have to think that going with this new alignment mean he’s considering making it permanent (though you never can tell).

Drew said he could always go big if Bogut gives the Hawks problems. The hope is that the Hawks can give opponents problems by running.

“I like the speed, I like the quickness of it,” Drew said. “We have been struggling scoring points and we have not been a team that has played out in the open court. We have mostly been playing in the half court. By going with this lineup it gives us speed. What I really like is we have two guys who can get the ball off the glass and initiate the break. It puts such pressure on the defense.

“We have both Kirk and Jeff who can handle the ball, and Joe. Having all five guys running and racing the lanes, it makes us more effective. We’ve always put emphasis on it but I think we have kind of gotten away from it. I am just trying to get back to really putting an emphasis on all five guys running.”

Drew said not much changes for J.J. when he shifts to small forward.

“Usually at the two and the three it’s going to be very similar,” Drew said. “He will be defending the same type of actions. At the one it’s just totally different. One thing is that at the two and the three he will probably be in more switchable situations, which should help in defending some of the stagger screens and misdirection stuff. He is pretty much used to that. When you have the same size guys–Joe, Marvin, Damien, and depending on the matchup Josh Smith–usually those are switchable situations and he doesn’t have to do a lot of chasing.”

L.D. said the Hawks have been switching more on D lately but only in such “switchable situations.” The goal is to avoid ending up big vs. small.

Head wound

J.J. wore a large bandage around his head during shootaround. There was a spot of blood bleeding through an area on the right side over his ear. The Hawks said J.J. has an infected wound that was cleaned out.

“Just a little mishap. Nothing major,” J.J. said. “I will be all right.”

He said the wound didn’t happen on the court but wouldn’t elaborate.

Does it hurt?

“A little bit,” he said. “I will be all right.”

Joe said he probably would wear a headband tonight to protect the wound.

Just play

L.D. has a theory on Jamal’s recent shooting struggles:

“One thing I am trying to get him away from is trying to bait officials into calls and trying to be yourself. He has a tendency to try to draw fouls, especially at the three-point line, and it throws his shot off. He’s leaning one way and the ball is going another way. He’s got to just step up and shoot the ball and just be aggressive, be Jamal.”

After at first expressing skepticism about that take, Jamal said there might be something to it.

“All it takes is a second or a hitch or anything and it changes the way the shot is supposed to go,” he said. “I’ve shot 50 percent the last two games, though.”

Good move, LD. Against a good defensive Bucks team it’s key we try to get easy baskets with our speed, and hopefully Zaza can put in work on the boards against Bogut.

Wow, I was first twice this year, I may need to buy some lottery tickets! – anyway guess I will read the article now. I wonder if this was the lineup LD was alluding two prior to the break. I truly was very disappointed in LD when he did not make changes. Part of coaching is making tough decisions to help the team and when he made the change that Portland game, he showed he had a pair. As poorly as Marvin has played,if he didn’t do something,… The next part of coaching is getting the guys to do what he wants them to. If he doesn’t want Josh shooting 3’s and if he continues, then Marvin can earn his job back. Actually, as big as he is now, I think Marvin will be more of a power forward. In that Portland game, Teague tried to throw him an alley and Marvin could only catch and lay the ball up – not even dunk

Teague, Hinrich, JJ, Josh, and Al

First subs, JC, MW and ZaZa

I like the speed. Let’s make teams adjust to us.

Hawks starters vs. #Bucks: Teague, Hinrich, Johnson, Smith, and Al_Horford.

With this small starting lineup, Bogut should have a field day. Didn’t LD get the memo, size does matter. With LD slow to respond on most night, let’s hope the Bucks lead doesn’t swell too large before he makes a change. Rebounding may be the biggest problem especially when we are struggling on offense. Consequently, against a good defensive team, I’m not exactly sure about this win.

The Truth: when are any of us sure about a win with this club? hahaha. But yea, Bogut could have a field day. However, he does have a habit of getting in foul trouble early from time to time…hopefully tonight is that night. I also, like most posters, like the speed with this lineup. Guess we’ll see how it does down the home stretch!!!

To justify drafting Marvin with the 2nd pick, Marvin continue to start games when it was clearly time for a change. Now you trade players and a draft pick for Kirk, and you justify that by starting him. How long will it take to make a change when it’s time for a change. Seriously,

Merely a Fleshwound?,

It isn’t a “wound” sort of speaking. It’s more like a “ringworm” type of infection which can be caused by him not washing his hair properly (not likely), laying on infected pillows (could happen during hotel stays) or something that can be easily passed alone at the barbershop (most likely).

I happened to notice it last game because my brother went through something similar once. It’s an infection that can cause hairloss in the infected area and an small to large abscess can grow. It will leak blood from time to time and can be very tender which can cause minor pain. It can also be cleaned-out by doctors with a needle.

Hope this clears up the confusion because it nothing close to being major like you are making it out to be.

Al has certainly held his own against Milwaukee this year playing at center, so I’m not sweating the small lineup too much. I do hope, though, that this desire to run more doesn’t cloud LD’s judgment to the extent that he starts using the small lineup in games where the big lineup would clearly be better, like the game against the Lakers or the game at the end of the month against Orlando. Collins is a plodder, sure, but I think they can do plenty of running with Teague/Joe/Smoove/Al/Collins against big teams. Teague can be a one man fast break in his own right.

“To justify drafting Marvin with the 2nd pick, Marvin continue to start games when it was clearly time for a change. ”

It’s not about the 2nd pick anymore as much as it’s about the insane contract extension he got in 2009, which only compounded the original mistake.

The thing is, Marvin has actually been pretty effective as a bench player. He was really good on the boards in the Portland game. He may not like it, but he’s best used in that way. I hope we don’t see him in the starting lineup anymore, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get minutes at all.

Big Stuff!

Funny how all teams have the exact same complaints levied about their performances. Just Brent “Bones” Barry on NBA TV said that
Rick Carlisle called his team “SOFT” in the media.

They came back and played hard. Then Brent says the Mavericks need more size in the post? Yeah! He said Heyward and Tyson Chandler are no match size-wise against the Lakers. Not even a chance against Bynum and Gasol. Then he mentioned Artest and Odom. Just too much length in LA.

So, for all the “Let’s just go and get a Big?”. Sorry folks, they don’t grow on trees, and Dikembe is not walking through that door.

And, while on the subject, Dikembe was no match for Shaq, and would have maybe one something if he had played with MJ or, better yet, was born 15 later than Shaq! Not only was Shaq, mammoth, he was skilled.

So, no, just because Twin is tall, that does not negate the fact he has concrete in his shoes, has no lift (vertical of 1/2″), does not rebound nor block any shots. Basically, he is a stiff paper drinking straw.

Teague is active and playing well defensively, but I wish he’d go in and try to get fouled more often (something he is fully capable of doing) instead of always going to the floater. That floater is already a tough shot, but it becomes even tougher when he drives baseline and doesn’t have the option of having it hit the backboard and possibly roll back in.

It’s kind of odd to see how different Brandon Jennings looks in this game, as opposed to the way he looked last season. In last year’s playoffs, Jennings was the main thorn in our side, and he was, arguably, the Bucks best player (I would say Salmons was their best player at that time). Now, Jennings looks like a total nonfactor, and Salmons just looks like an average player. Sure, part of it has to do with the fact that Jennings is no longer being defended by Mike Bibby and big men who he can get past off of a switch. Now, he has to tangle with Teague and Hinrich. Still, the change just seems incredibly dramatic. It’s almost like we are seeing a different player. I realize that Jennings is coming off of an injury, but it’s still strange to watch what has happened to the Bucks.

By the way, I love the way Joe was scoring in that first half. It was almost unreal. The thing I liked most is that all of Joe’s baskets were coming in the flow of the offense and he was incredibly efficient. There was no overdribbling or ball-hogging involved. One thing to keep in mind, though, is while Joe Johnson was ultra-impressive in that first half, don’t expect him to suddenly maintain this type of scoring or scoring efficiency. That’s too much to ask of anyone. Still, if he continue to score in this fashion and shoot around 50% from the field, it would really help out our team.

See what happens when ISO Joe does not POUND, POUND, POUND. He’s spotting up, passing the ball and having one helluva first half. He almost looks like he’s worth the 20 mill up to this point, there’s still the 2nd half. That “smoove” fella has only been “DUMD” trice in the first half, let’s hope he can harness his own silliness and not try to match Joe with launching up his usual BS. The 3rd quarter with good defense and this game is over if the “SOFT’S just play some defense. My biggest fear of a comeback is that they will give the ball to that “smoove” thing and he does not know what to do with it but launch a stupid ass shot, let’s hope LD pulls his silly behind if he does. Marvin, continues to be marvin and he’s still starvin for some basketball semblance. At this particular time I am enjoying the game like I did the other night when Jeff Teague took hold of the reins. I am hoping for the best and expecting the worst, just can’t depend on them following thru because we do have that “smoove” person, irregardless of a few blocks, if he does not get his points under the board we could very well be in big trouble. See ya’ll after the game.

Joe is being so much more aggressive in this game. That’s the third or fourth time he’s made a strong move towards the hoop where he normally would settle for the jumper. The last couple of Teague misses (both blocked) were takes I can live with. If he continues to take it strong to the basket like that eventually he’ll start drawing fouls. I’d just rather not see him rely too much on that floater. I must say the game tonight was thoroughly enjoyable. Josh Smith actually played within himself minus a few simple minded plays. The defense was pretty darn good and the ball movement was there for a change. The HAWKS played like professionals for the 2nd straight game. This could make a believer out of my sarcastic ass. We play Denver tomorrow night at 7p.m. They are a much better team then Milwaukee and that should be a pretty good test as to whether the HAWKS are actually trying to be a team. I hope so because as fans we really do deserve to watch a good product. The one glaring and bright light tonight was Marvin, he actually resembled a ball player, it was impressive and enjoyable to watch. As a fan I am truly appreciative of their focus and effort. I don’t want anymore “FOOLS GOLD”, I just want a solid ball team that’s willing to lay it all on the line and honor their chosen profession with pride and dignity. Thanks for a well executed game tonight fellas.

If the Hawks were a team with a plan, they would have developed Jordan and Teague prior to the season and worked them into the rotation early in the season enough that they could afford to trade Jamal and Bibby for increased depth — like the trade I kept bringing up that would have sent Jamal to Detroit for Prince/T-Mac/Ben Wallace.

With that said, as much as I think Jordan is a good player, it’s not hard to replace undersized 2-guards. I’d probably be a lot more p-ssed if the Hawks had traded Teague and he had developed into a good point guard somewhere else, since point guards are so much harder to find (as we all painfully know all too well).

The Hilton Inn!

I never saw Hilton play before. Impressive. I would like to see more of him to see what we got there. They said he was a lottery pick at #12 five years ogo. Where has he been all these years.

Typically, it takes big men a while to develop. Think about it, when you are 6′11″ or 7′ it takes a long time for blood and nerves to flow from the brain to the fingert tips and toes. That’s called agility. That’s really what it’s all about. “Fast-Twitch” muscle fibers are called Beta Waves versus Gamma Waves which are slow-twitch and more for explosion and strength, (like you see with lineman in footbal who explode off the ball, but have no speed or agility like skilled positions (wide outs and corner backs).

Sorry, for the tangent! but, big guys don’t have Fast-Twitch Beta Fibers, unless you were a freak like Shaq was. Shaq was unbelievable for a man his size. These big guys are phenomenons! And very rare amongst the general population.

Hopefully, Hilton is working on his pilates and plyo-metrics to increase the speed of his nerve flow to the muscles and hopefully his nutrition is that of a world class athlete. Nutrition is a HUGE part of performance, HUGE!

At this point, shouldn’t we want the Bulls to win? The overwhelming likelihood is that the Hawks end up with a 5 seed. Barring a total collapse at this point, the Knicks are probably not going to catch the Hawks, so even if they catch Orlando they are still in the 4-5 matchup. The winner of the 4-5 matchup plays the #1 seed in the 2nd round. Am I the only one who thinks the Hawks (if they beat Orlando obviously) would be better off facing the Bulls in round 2 than the Celtics?

Najeh Davenpoop

March 15th, 2011
10:00 pm

I just think the Celtics have a much greater variety of ways in which they can score, and the Hawks will have to account for all of those options in the playoffs if they face them. The Bulls are so reliant on Rose that if the Hawks can contain him (easier said than done obviously) the rest of that team doesn’t have the variety of scoring options that would allow them to continue winning. In that sense, they remind me a little of the Cavs of the last two seasons, who were dominant in the regular season and an elite defensive team but broke down in the playoffs when they came across another great defensive team with multiple scoring options.

In the first matchup, Hinrich and Teague shut Rose down; in the second matchup, the Hawks did a good job on Rose in the first half but Jamal on Rose in the second half allowed him to go off. I think the Hawks have the personnel to contain Rose and make it a tough series for the Bulls if they stick to using Hinrich and Teague on him and not Jamal.

Excellent post on the Jordan Crawford trade. It is easy to put up great numbers on a bad team too. Jordan to me has flashes of DWade, but lacks the size and defense at this point. If Jordan continues to be an
offensive specialist, and I think he will.

He will become reminiscent of a John Starks, Jet Terry, JJ Reddick type player. Because of his small stature, he will become a journey man as teams opt for defense, rebounders, assists and “do the dirty work” type players needed to win Championships. Ever wonder Jamal is such a journey man? See Nate Robinson beginning his world tour now as well.

Like Najeh said, those guys are a plethora. Teague is gonna give you 3 to 4 tools in his game. We don’t need another scorer, we need rbounds and defense. If Teague can sneak in there and rebound like Rondo?
