Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 110, Bucks 85
11:05 pm March 15, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
- I couldn’t decide on the strangest sight tonight: Joe in a giant headband, Joe playing like an All-Star shotmaker or he and the other Hawks regulars laughing and joking on the bench in the fourth quarter of a blowout W.
- It had been a while since all of those things happened for the Hawks.
- “We haven’t had a win like this, I don’t think, all year,” L.D. said. “This was a huge win against a very quality team.”
- Well the Bucks are a quality defensive team, at least. Not many opponents shoot well against the Bucks, and that could have meant trouble for the Hawks if they came out jump-shot happy, missed, and kept jacking.
- Instead they came out running and J.J., wearing his magic headband, couldn’t miss.
- “That was the Joe of Old,” Drew said.
- Suddenly everything that hadn’t been working for so long was clicking. J.J. made runners, post-ups, pull-ups, baseline turnarounds and 3-pointers. Lots and lots of 3-pointers, including five in a row as the Hawks buried the Bucks in the first half.
- “It was just a feeling, and I just let it go,” he said.
- Joe looked spry on defense, too.
- “He was fighting through screens,” Drew said. “He just had a solid, solid overall game on both ends of the floor. He was making shots, but I thought defensively he did a tremendous job as well.”
- J.J. said two days off helped him feel better. I’m thinking this means that L.D. needs to find him as many days off as possible.
- The Hawks aren’t going anywhere if Joe can’t play up to his usual level. This has to be the start of something for him.
- “It gives us a lot of confidence,” Al said. “When Joe is going like that, he’s as good as anyone in the league. I’m really happy for him tonight to get it going and hopefully it starts building some momentum for him for the playoffs.”
- The Hawks ran smart tonight. Five of their 12 field goals in the first quarter came by way of fast breaks and there weren’t many of the silly turnovers they had against the Blazers. Atlanta would have had more transition points if the Bucks hadn’t fouled a few times to prevent easy run-outs.
- It’s encouraging for the Hawks to run against an opponent that’s capable of grinding them down in the half court.
- “With the change in the lineup, it has allowed us to get out a little bit more in transition, particularly with Jeff Teague,” Drew said. “I thought Kirk did a good job as well. We got stops and we got our break going. Both Al and Josh Smith did a great job of running the floor. We put a lot of emphasis on that before the game. We really wanted to make Bogut run the floor, get him up and down.”
- Brandon Jennings is Milwaukee’s speed guy but Teague had him tied up. It was one thing for Teague to get into Andre Miller’s chest and keep him from getting near the basket, quite another for him to do the same to Jennings.
- “You look at Teague’s line, you may not be impressed from a numbers standpoint, but I thought he set the tone early with Jennings,” L.D. said. “He got up on him early at the half court, picked him up some in the back court. To be honest, in the past, we weren’t able to do that.”
- Bogut got his but he didn’t get much help so the Bucks had no chance to match Atlanta’s hot scoring.
- “Everyone played solid on the defensive end, we helped each other out like we should play,” Al said. “They came in here earlier in the year and beat us pretty bad, so we didn’t forget that game.”
- There were times when the Bucks looked as if they would rather be somewhere else. Salmons was the worst offender.
- “We had trouble getting back on defense early in the game and we looked a little bit tired,” Scott Skiles said. “We tried to put fresher bodies in there but that didn’t work. It was just one of those games where we didn’t play very well. . . . They dictated to us instead of us to them.”
- It’s clear Smoove doesn’t have the same spring in his legs and really hasn’t for much of the season. But he’s still managing to dig out rebounds, challenge shots and finish dunks on the break. Now if he can just cut down on the turnovers.
- This was another strong defensive rebounding game for the Hawks, who collected 36 of Milwaukee’s 50 misses (plus three team rebounds). A subpar game on the boards from Al (five rebounds) was offset by Josh’s 14 rebounds and a combined 13 from Joe, Teague and Hinrich.
- “We make it a point for our guards to get in there,” Drew said. “We use the term ‘gang rebound.’ It’s not just for the big guys, it’s for everybody. It’s got to be everybody in there on the glass and chasing down loose balls.”
- Marvin doesn’t like to come off the bench but it seems like he gets right to work when he’s a reserve. He was strong and confident while taking the Bucks into the post.
- Jamal scored just four points on four shots but had eight assists against three turnovers.
- Damien has scored in double figures in three of the last four games.
- Circumstances dictate that Ken S. takes over for the next few days, blog people. Be cool until I get back.

OK, I Got Jokes! But, seriously fellas, we are stuck with Marvin and his contract. He has found a niche and once again, (see UNC) that is glued to the bench. Marvin, as usual, excels coming off the bench. He just plays better from that position on this team and on his UNC team.

Teague has put together two strong games. Once he gets settles into his starting role, and knows where his minutes are coming from, he can now be mentally prepared to pace himself and play well with the super stars on his teams.
Like Tim Hardaway once said, “I don’t play with scrubs!” When asked, why he doesn’t play in pick up games in the Summer. As an old Tennis prodigy in my own right, I always played better against better competition. Not that I played down to the level of my competition, but I always played better when challenged by better players, usually Men versus Women in my old neighborhood playgrounds. I went on to play for The College of Charleston on a four year scholarship in the early 80’s. If not for a spinal defect, I would have been a Professional Tennis player instead of a Chiropractor, or maybe, I would have been both! So, KPT! (Keep Playing Teague).

I like the line up we rolled out there last night.

Jamal followed up a great game against Portland, (20 pts. 2nd half) with 8 assists last night against “The Deer” in the headlights.
Milwaukee looked a dumb old deer standing in the middle of the road, they didn’t even know they were about to get hit! They don’t know nothing. What do they know? What’s a nacho? That’s when you see a fine woman that belongs to somebody else – that’s something that’s Nachos! LOL! (taken from a Tyler Perry play)

MC,
I’m curious about Joe’s suddenly improved shooting last night. Would he credit LD with pointing out flaws in his shot. I have been giving LD a lot of grief lately and wanted to give him credit for a great observation. I copied a couple of paragraphs from the March 11 blogpost:
Drew said he went back and looked at video of J.J.s last several games to analyze his 3-point shots.
“If there is one thing that I notice with his 3, at times, he hesitates,” Drew said. “There is kind of a pause there before he lets it go. I don’t know if that if affects him or not. We went back and looked at some tape as far as Utah. We looked at his feet position, his shoulders; whether he is leading with his right side; is he hesitating, is he bunny-hopping into the shot, is he ‘one-two’ into the shot.”
Lester Conner met with J.J. after Thursday’s practice to show him what the video breakdown of his 3-point shots.
“[They were better] when he caught it and went into rhythm and let it go,” L.D. said. “I’m not saying they are always going to go in, but I really want him not even thinking about it. I want him catching it and going right into his shot. A lot of players when they are wide open they will take their time going into the shot. I think that is one of the worst things you can do. You have got to shoot that thing like someone is coming at you.”

GRANDAD-Please don’t get the idea that I consider LDrew a stupid person when I use the term STUBBORN STUPIDITY. But when it comes to certain aspects to coaching the Hawks, how else would you classify his insistance on repeating some of the same illadvised moves and decisions that definitely didn’t work for Woodson.
Why repeat the same approach to developing Teague that had nothing but negative results before? Why make the same excuses that didn’t make sense when Woodson made them? Why continue Woodson’s habit of blaming the players for the teams poor DEF, while continuing to rely heavily on the same 2 DEF liabilities?
Why continue relying on the NBA’s slowest, least athletic and productive starting PG, just like Woodson did, yet somehow expect the same starting lineup, and basically the same team overall, to improve?
There has to be an element of STOBBORNESS in this approach, no matter who’s doing it.
And considering how he’s seen first hand how this approach caused the team to turn on Woodson, as well as cost him his job, there has to be an element of STUPIDITY. How else do you explain him repeating the same illadvised decisions, approach and excuses that didn’t work for Woodson, basically with the same players, yet expecting a totally different result?
With Teague and Hinrich, the Hawks no longer have to rely on OFF, especially half court OFF, to score pts and win gms, which was the case before the trade. We are now able to win with DEF, and score easy pts by playing uptempo and fast breaking, which is what this team is best suited to do.
We’re now seeing Teague, Damien and Hinrich come out of their conservative shells and do things they weren’t doing earlier. The reasons for Teague’s conservative approach and unwillingness to expand his gm are well known, while Damien and Hinrich’s reasons were the result of their unfamilarity with the team and its OFF/DEF systems.
As they slowly come out of their shells and expand their gms, they Hawks will become progressively better in the process. One thing I really like that took place in last nights gm was the energy and effort from HArmstrong. While he’s not the one on one post defender that JCollins is, I believe his superior speed, quickness and athleticism will allow him to be a better help defender, rebounder and shot blocker.

Once ASKG gave Marvin that “duffle bag”? He relaxed his effort. Marvin needs a personal trainer, (he can reach into his bag-o-money) and pay for a Ballet Class, Yoga, Pilates or Plyo-Metrics trainer this Summer to work on his balance. IDK who he should hire for his shot doctor or nutrionist, but he definitely does not need to go back to UNC and take another class of African American Studies.
Aye Marvin! You can stop counting your money. Yes, the benjamins are real, they are not counterfeit, like your game. It’s true, with your miser ways? You are set for life! So, come on and just focus on basketball.

Washington is giving more time to jc2 over mo while ld let mo play & jc2 sit on the bench. This team would really have been a contender if he had played jt & jc2. I watched jc2 play in the summer league & knew he would be a star.he seemed to be a good passer & someone around here gave him a bad rap about his defense. Every other team in the NBA gives their first rounders time in the first year. I hope ld gives armstrong a chance to play we have to see what he has.

OK, The Hawks and The Wizards are two different teams and are Night and Day comparatively speaking. Bad teams would be an idiot not to develop a promising rookie, what have they got to lose? A trip to the ECF? I think not.
Besides, for the last time, when Jordan was drafted Joe was on the left coast and not returning calls to Drew nor Sund. Once Joe was signed and Jamal not traded, perhaps Jordan should have been traded then rather than at the deadline. But, Teague was coming along slowly, (you can debate as to why?) However, there was no place for Jordan to steal time from Joe nor Jamal. We simply did not need another scorere, there is only one ball in The Naismith game and Jordan is a high volume, streaky scorer, (he is not a pure shooter). Kirk gives us the glue on defense at the point of attack, both defensively and offensively.
So, please stop the mantra, the ranting and the obnoxious repeating of the same thing over and over. Its becoming as old as Marvin’s Grandmas two day old biscuits! Just stop it, with the whining – please!

The issue with this team is its fragile psyche. C’mon Joe goes off one night and says he feels more “rested” and that bs gets play???
What team/orginization/fan base would tolerate such limp biscuits from their most expensive player?

Last night’s performance by Joe Johnson was one of the best performances in his career. I feel like Joe [HAS THE POTENTIAL] to play like that every single night. Earlier in his career he used to be the man every night. Now, though, he has been surrounded by great scorers such as Al Horford, Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford, so it is no longer necessary for Joe to score 25-30 points a night. He is certainly capable of delivering a performance like that each night. If fans want to be honest, they will “call it like it is” and say that last nights performance by Joe LOOKED EVERY BIT AS GOOD as an elite players performance; someone like a Carmello, LaBron, D-Wade or Kobe. Ive always said that Joe is not just as good as those guys, Joe is better than most of them. Joe has become lazy and doesnt care to perform like that if he doesnt feel like, which is a shame. We now know that JOE HAS BEEN HOLDING BACK AND COULD LEAD THE LEAGUE IN SCORING IF HE FELT INCLINED TO DO SO. When Joe’s playing career is over he should be a first ballot hall of famer, if he is treated fairly by the voters.

Department of Unintended Irony: I only have one problem with your last couple of posts. You didn’t need to point out your joke, you should have kept it going. You should have continued to seriously ask about this new phenomenon of the “escape goat”. Maybe it is a term to describe a goat(or loser) who is always “escaping” the blame. Almost the opposite of the scape goat. The escape goat uses the scape goat to escape from being the goat. Don’t you see how briliant that really is?
In which case, I suggest that Joe’s comments that he was better rested and therefore able to perform at a higher level prove he is indeed the escape goat.

REV IN TAMPA-I also noticed the difference it JJ’s shooting. Before, he’d come off a screen and be open, but rather than take the open shot, he’d hesitate and try to get closer. When cut off, JJ would go ISO and end up holding and/or pounding the ball. Agaist the Bucks, he took advantage of every open opportunity and stepped into every shot without hesitation.
Knowing he’s going to take his open shots without hesitation, allows his teammates to get into rebounding position, rather than clearing out so he can go ISO. We have 15 gms and some very good competition remaining before the playoffs begins. That’s a lot of time to get Teague, Hinrich, Damien and Armstrong fully incorporated with their teammages and functional.
If I was LDrew, I’d treat the remainder of the season as the beginning of a new season, and the regular season up to this point as an extended training camp and preseason.

If JEFF TEAGUE wants to go to the head of the class and QUICKLY, EXPEDIENTLY, develop into a world-class, all-star player, then Teague SHOULD IMMEDIATELY go into the NBA archives and find as much film on Nate “Tiny” Archibald and Spud “Little Sputnick” Webb. Teague attempting to emulate and copy either or both of those players will result in the Hawks bringing home the Gold Trophy at the end of this season.

JJ is not lazy, he has motivational problems.
I think he loses his focus when things around him disappoint him, like last year’s playoffs, midway the Bucks series: he was averaging 27.5ppg, 7rpg and 5.5ass whilst shooting really well UNTIL the limmo incident when players on arrival to MIL went down to party in CHI.
I think JJ did not particularly like to have Bibby around and have to work double shifts to compensate his decaying game and probably does not like Jamal’s play either.
Basically, their characters/type of play are in stark contrast with his.
JJ is an excellent two-way player, every bit as good on defense as he is on offense, making him an excellent all round player.
JJ came into training camp as the guy who signed a 125 million dollar contract and still was the guy who was best fit physically, clocking the best time on the mile.
He was the guy who came off waaaay early from his elbow surgery.
Bibby was lazy, as his extremely poor conditioning showed, and a prankster/goof ball and on court, also due to his lack of conditioning, an increasing liability.
JJ is, on the other hand, a quiet fellow, a guy who only knows how to lead by example and not vocally.
Jamal is all offense and does not even know how much his lack of D or refrain from playing an individual game hurts the team.
JJ, although a guy who holds the rock far too long in many possessions as well, has been the assists leader for this team since he came in, so he cannot be considered egotistical.
Does he have flaws? Sure, but he looks reinvigorated and has been very vocal (a rare exception) in the support of Teague so I am hopeful that he is now feeling better about our chances and will be more motivated and pick up his game.

I hate to bring this up right when the Hawks are on a roll, but I think race has played a part in Jeff Teagues LACK OF PLAYING TIME and LACK OF DEVELOPMENT. Years ago when we drafted Teague, Teague should have been thrown into the frey right away, but we bring in Mike Bibby who failed to tutor and mentor teague and basically started at point guard for the Hawks and stalled Jeff Teagues career. Then when Bibby is finally sent packing his bags out of town, instead of doing the right thing and quickly inserting Teague into the starting lineup, instead we trade for someone we dont really need in an attempt to put in as point guard (starter) THE GREAT WHITE HOPE (Hinrich). This is the second time that a white player has pre-empted Teague and was pushed themselves in front of him in the starting lineup. The first one was Mike Bibby. As long as teague has been in the league, Teague should be one of the premier point guards, and should be as good as Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook or Rajon Rondo. Instead Teague is playing out there like he is lost most of the time, with his only breakout game against Portland. I hope that Teague is permanently put into the starting lineup and Hinrich comes in to backup Teague. That is how the rotation is supposed to go. But if a franchise must have a “GREAT WHITE HOPE”, then it will be either Mike Bibby or Kurt Hinrich starting at point guard for the Hawks instead of the faster, more electifying, more talented Teague. What a shame!

I think its very unfair to say Joe only had a good game because we are playing the Bucks. First and foremost, the Bucks are a better team then their record indicates. Like Memphis and Phoenix.
Secondly, Joe was on his game tonight. Wheter you bring in the Lakers or the Bulls on this night, Joe would have and could have still went off. Maybe a little less points or maybe more…depending on what the defense brought. When a guy is on point…then he is on point. Once a scorer gets in rhytm, then good luck keeping him away from his points.
I dont know if you guys remember that one game between the Hawks and Lakers in Phillips Arena about maybe either 2 or 3 years ago. When Joe went head to head with Kobe matching point after point, three after three, drive in after drive in. Both men played exceptional defense on each other, but becuase they are scorers…and scorer in rhytm and on point…there was no amount of defense that could stop them.

@ it was not a bad pick
The problem I have with your assessment of Marvin, is the same one I have with how people say that coach held Teague back. True ballers play well enough, even in spot minutes, to MAKE the coach play them. And they play well enough to MAKE AN IMPACT on a game.
One of the biggest problems I have with Marvin, is that he basically let 4 guys come in here, and take playing time away from him. And the big problem, is that they were ALL GUARDS.
- Flip took time away from Marvin, because Flip proved in 2 months that he could be an offensive piece that could be counted on, more than Marvin could
- Jamal came in and took time from Marvin right away, because of his ability to score in bunches
- And now Hinrich has taken time from Marvin, because his perimeter defensive abilities at the 1 and the 2 give coach the freedom to move JJ to the 3.
No matter how much or how little Marvin touches the ball, it still doesn’t prevent him from making an impact on a game.
- he could be a defender/shooter like a young Shane Battier
- he could be slasher like Corey Maggettee that consistently gets to the FT line
- he could be a 3 point specialist like a Shawne Williams
- he could be a rebounder like Shawn Marion ( who in his “old age” is still an above average rebounder at the SF position )
But he’s neither of those guys.
To me, Marvin isn’t a horrible player like some make him out to be. He’s just isn’t great at one particular thing that will keep him out on the floor. He’s like a C-student that make all C’s in every subject . . not a C-student who may make A’s in History, but F’s in Math. But at least that type of C-student can be counted on to do one thing particularly well.
If Marvin was at least a “specialist”, you could justify and measure his impact every game.
According to hoopsstats.com, Marvin is 24th in minutes per game amongst the current SFs in the league. So say that we use the 24th ranking, as a barometer for where he should stack up amongst all SFs. This is where Marvin ranks per category:
Points: 26th
Rebounds: 17th
. . Off Rebs: 15th
. . Def Rebs: 15th
Assists: 30th
Steals: 42nd
Blocks: 31st
FG%: 35th
3FG%: 54th
FT%: 12th
Efficiency: 22nd
So when you look at this statistical snapshot of how Marvin stacks up against the rest of the SFs in the league, it shows that Marvin rebounds and shoot FTs better than most SFs. In every other category, he is average or below average. If I were to run his defensive numbers from other sites, he’d be average to slighly above average on defense.
So in actuality, the main thing that Marvin does relatively well, is shoot FTs. But when you only get to the line 2.6 times a game, even that isn’t something that we can rely on every game.
Blaming Joe Johnson for taking touches away from him, does NOT prevent him from being at least a specialist type player in other areas. If he were at least a very good specialist in ONE AREA, people wouldn’t complain about him so much.

I listed 3 guys . . but the 4th guy I was going to list, was Mo Evans. But Mo really only took Marvin’s minutes when he was hurt. He didn’t take minutes from him when he was healthy. Flip did though.

Even with Childress, if there was one thing that you KNEW Chill could do, it was rebound the ball on the offensive glass. He made a living crashing the boards, and getting out on the fast break and scoring in transition.
Marvin just needs to do SOMETHING well, and people will stay off his back. Either do SOMETHING well . . or play consistent basketball on a nightly basis as a complimentary player

Bingo!
northcyde has put Marvin and his Grandma to rest!
They have both been eulogized!
We real bloggers can bury them side-by-side and their tombstone will read:
Marvin Williams –
“He is very tall and shot FT’s well.”
-bibby-
Grandma Williams -
“She loved her grandson to the very end.”

At least Teague is now finding a niche with this team as a defensive specialist. I wish he could’ve done this earlier in the season as a reserve PG, maybe he would’ve played more.
But if by him starting helps these guys that much on defense, then Drew has to at least go with this for a few more weeks vs Miami, Orlando and Boston, just to see how the lineup looks vs those teams. Especially against Boston, because that’s the team that has throttled us twice.
If the lineup is somewhat successful, and if it makes our bench stronger, this may be the way to go in the playoffs.
People just can’t expect great, or even good offensive numbers with Teague as a starter. But if he’s able to limit the other guy from going off, then he’ll be OK in his new role.

LuellaPatterson,
I hate to break the news but Bibby is at least a quarter black so your theory may be a little bit off
FYI Bibby’s father – Henry Bibby – is half black, half white.
I understand that to be 25% or 50% black is considered 100% black there in the USA.
Just like Obama…
I know that you have many past (semi-present) wounds, but to rub salt in them does not seem help from where I see it…
If you wanted to bring up the reason why ATL paid so much to Koncak, drafted Keefe and so many other scubs…
…then we could have a subject of some stupid blog talk to work on, but to pick on Hinrich which is a bona fide grade B+ player in this league is pure nonsense.

Luella- It must be sad to look at an NBA team with a black head coach. 10 black players. one georgian and one american caucasion and still feel that the black man is getting held back. What is on the radio there in 1964?

northcyde- most NBA people consider Childress to be one of if not the biggest free agent busts of the season and a perfect example of how the economics of the NBA is out of whack. Just sayin’

Daniel,
I think Childress main problem – and PHO’s – is that they already had a similar player in Dudley.
It’s like having two red ties, you need to have one but it will never be your main tie, so why buy a second one?

I blame the coaching over the past 6 1/2 years….
I blame the coaching over the past 6 1/2 years for the lack of defined roles on this team. The players on this team all think they are GREAT all-around players…THEY ARE NOT.
Woody and LD never created defined role for each player, so they could compliment each other. They have spent their careers mimicking each other instead of becoming GREAT AT ONE THING.
ALL OF OUR CORE PLAYERS ARE AVERAGE…
Al is a “A” jumpshooter but “D” low post players and has an “F” left hand.
Josh is an “A” shot blocker, “C+” Rebounder, “D” jumpshooter and a “D-” right hand.
Marvin is a “C+” jumpshooter, “C” rebounder, “B” defender and “C” low post player because he can finish with his left hand.
Joe is just a “B” all-around players, except he get an “F” for drawing fouls.
If Woody had a solid offensive Identity we would not be in this position.
Marvin should have been our defensive and 3pt specialist.
Josh should be our low post presence(7 years and can’t finish with his right hand)or he should be a shotblocking and rebounding specialist.
If Woody understood the importance of DIRECTION, we would not be complaining about all of our players and draft picks.
Popavinch, told Jefferson that he would have to play off GINO, Parker and Duncan…so he developed a 3pt shot and became an asset.
LD and Woody coached like every player is a Star(except young PG) and we have suffered for it.
We blame Marvin for not being aggressive. We blame Josh for being too aggressive. WE SHOULD BLAME THE COACHES FOR NOT PROVIDING ENOUGH DIRECTION.
