Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 94, Hawks 76
12:06 am March 12, 2011, by Michael Cunningham

D-Rose did a lot of this to the Hawks. (Chris Sweda, McClatchy-Tribune)
Chicago–Kirk Hinrich is new to these Hawks. He sounds like he can’t quite understand why the Hawks recognize what works for them but can’t stick with their plans now that the competition has toughened.
- “In the second half it was like we forgot everything we did in the first half,” Hinrich said.
- I doubt this will be the last time he expresses such a sentiment.
- The Hawks scored 30 points in the second quarter. They made 13 of 21 shots, were 5 of 8 in the paint and had two turnovers. Jamal and Al had the two-man game going and J.J.made a couple jumpers.
- In the third quarter, the Hawks scored 10 points. They missed 11 of 15 shots, were 1 for 2 in the paint and had five turnovers.
- “I don’t think we did what we did in the first half to stick around which is move the basketball and get good looks,” J.J. said. “We started playing a lot of one-on-one and our shot selection wasn’t the greatest.”
- “We definitely didn’t have the movement we had in the first half,” Jamal said.
- To be sure, the game changed because D-Rose decided he was going to change it. But L.D. and the Hawks hardly did all they could to prevent it.
- The coach stuck with a Jamal-J.J. backcourt when Hinrich was in foul trouble. The players did little to discourage Rose from dancing into the lane.
- “Rose got to the basket at will against us,” Drew said. “He attacked the paint and we couldn’t keep him in front of us. We tried a few zone possessions but he still got there.”
- Did L.D. consider sending in Teague for a crack at slowing Rose’s slices to the rim?
- “Thought about it but that to me that wasn’t the real issue at that point, him getting into the lane,” Drew said. “We did nothing with a physicality as far as taking any hard fouls. That was my thought process. Even when he was getting to the line, we did nothing about giving hard fouls. I don’t care who you are playing against, if you play that soft, you are going to have problems in the paint.”
- The problems extended to the glass, where the Bulls hammered the Hawks 50-28. The Bulls are the league’s best rebounding team, so this was a game where the Hawks desperately needed someone other than Al (seven rebounds) and Josh (six) to hit the boards.
- They got four rebounds in 17 minutes from Zaza and not much else. Marvin had one in 18 minutes. L.D. went with Wilkins and he had three in 21 minutes.
- Even with Boozer (ankle) sidelined, Chicago’s front line of Noah, Hawks nemesis Kurt Thomas , Taj Gibson and Omer Asik combined for 31 rebounds. Denghad more rebounds than Marvin and Damien combined in his 40 minutes.
- “They are a good rebounding team,” L.D. said. “They did a great job, which we expected. They did a tremendous job in attacking the glass. Both Noah and Kurt, he still has a little in his tank. He gets to the glass as well. I thought Gibson got to the glass. It’s nothing we didn’t expect. We are a team that’s had problems with the glass, and going into this game we wanted to pay particular attention to that, keep them off the glass and limit them.”
- The Hawks trailed 22-20 after the first quarter, when the Bulls missed some open 3s and Rose got into foul trouble. Joe made an effort to get into the lane early but, in contrast to Rose, was met by a sea of hands and bodies and kept losing his handle on the ball.
- “It was tough,” Joe said. “A lot of that could have gone either way. It happens. I have been and we have been going through a rut these last few games. We will get out of it tomorrow.”
- Josh had success spinning into the lane even if it was tough to finish down there. Things didn’t go so well when he had to dribble before making his move. He also missed both of his 3-point attempts as part of a 1 for 5 effort from beyond 15 feet.
- But at least Josh was willing to go hard to the basket and earned nine free-throw attempts. Horford, Marvin, Jamal, Zaza and Damien had none.
- “It was physical,” L.D. said. “We got the ball down low. I didn’t think we went away from it. We still went down to it we just came away empty-handed. A team like Chicago they have size, they have length. We were pretty much prepared for their double teams.”
- After he started 5 for 5 from the field and seemed to be in a flow, Jamal had just three shot attempts after halftime. The Hawks lately don’t seem able to go to whichever guy has it going.
- Al had five assists. He seemed reluctant to go around or shoot over Thomas.
- The Hawks have been better defensively since Hinrich arrived but the offense has stalled.
- “It’s a little bit of an adjustment,” Hinrich said. “The Hawks play a little different than any team I’ve ever been on. We have a lot of guys who post up and most of the teams I’ve been on haven’t had much of a post-up presence. A lot of isos. We have a lot of versatility. A lot of guys who can handle the ball. I think it’s a good fit. We just have to find a way to help each other on both ends.”
- The Hawks have lost four in a row for the first time since November.
- “We still have a lot more basketball left,” Joe said. “We have just got to stay positive and get out of this little rut we are in. I’m pretty sure I know tomorrow with us going back home knowing we have to get off this skid we have got to come out on all cylinders and try to get us one.”
- “We have got to get up,” L.D. said. “This is the NBA. All teams go through trials and tribulations. We are one of the teams at that time. It’s not a time to hang your head. It’s a time to look in the mirror and come out and bounce back. This is no different than what a lot of the other teams have gone through. This is a time to see what we are made of.”

Najeh, took the words out of my mouth. ‘That wasn’t the real issue at that point’. If you don’t know what the real issue is, then of course – there’s no way to solve said issue. And so it goes that almost everything I’ve said about this team since the day we decided not to hire Thibs (or even INTERVIEW Thibs) and not start Teague at PG to start the year (and yes, he wasn’t a better PG than Bibby at the time) has come to pass.

Hey Hinrich, that’s what we been saying on these blogs for months now..The Hawks have a very low Basketball IQ. Just not smart ballers at all.. Josh Smith is unbelievable..This dude will never get it!!!!!!!!Just waive Marvin……………………..
Stick a fork in this bird!!!!!!!!!! The Hawks are toast….4-10 last 14 games with 17 to go…They have technically imploded!!! Sad…. Very sad for Hawks fans to watch and endure this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If he really cared that much about hard fouls, he would have presumably put in Etan Thomas like he did the other day. That explanation is so full of sh-t that I think he may have just forgotten that Teague plays for the Hawks and is trying to cover his ass.

I still can’t get over the complete stupidity of LD’s “explanation” on Teague. So basically, if the Hawks had just kept sending Rose to the free throw line (where he was 14/15) instead of giving up layups, LD would have been totally cool with it.

This team is defense adverse… You guys keeps thinking that a coach can give them the desire… They need three guys willing to sacrifice their game like Powe, Artest, and Battier did for the larger good… Marvin could if he had a heart. Teague just has lost all confidence, and Jamal well, it has always been something like the last man in a leper colony! That leaves Wilkins, but has to see extended minutes… Sigh!

I don’t really want to look ahead of things but during this offseason, the hawks should definetly focus on everything they’re doing wrong, like shot selections (mostly Josh Smith), Joe Johnson improving his shooting percentage, also trying to get more helpful players and lastly being a good defensive team

nahej, sorry dude but josh has got to go.
how long to we have tolerate his inability to play off the ball defense.
how long do we have to tolerate a poward foward that has zero ability to play in the low posst.
how long till he can learn to dribble with his right hand.
how long dow we have to tolerate our poward foward floating around the arc.
how frickin long, with his pouting. he is a coach killer.
ask any g.m.
great defensive players deny the ball. smoove is only concerned about blocking shots. he is a absolute waste of the physical gifts he has.

Joe Johnson: “…we are a jump-shooting team. If shots are falling then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are jump shooters. That’s pretty much what it is.”
Can you imagine Dominique Wilkins saying, “we are a dunking team. If dunks are falling then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are dunkers. That’s pretty much what it is.”
Or Magic Johnson saying, “we are a passing team. If passes are working then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are passers. That’s pretty much what it is.”
‘Nique came into the league with hardly any skills but dunking the ball, but year after year he continued to add to his game and worked to become a better all around player. ‘Nique, Magic, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan,…those guys were never satisfied to simply be one dimensional, or pretty good. They wanted to be complete players. They wanted to be winners. The same can be said about Kobe Bryant and a few more of today’s star players,…
…but not Joe Johnson. No, Joe is a jump shooter.
If the shots are falling, then great. If not – Oh well.
Joe is still going to get paid. What does he care?

What we really need is to start Teague and left Kurt finish @ least he can offer a change of pace. Second we all need to call out Josh for his poor decisions shooting and ball-handling. Joe for his approach of not earning that much money but even if he is struggling he should look like Ray Allen and go to the gym and shoot 300 shoots before the game to try and get out of the slump. (Jamal Crawford too) Marvin Williams needs to decide if he wants to attempt being a BBall pro or just continue going through the motions 25-82 games a year. And last but not least LD needs to not be more like Woody and let J Teague play it can’t be any worse than what we already have no transition points, no one pressuring the ball although Kurt tries, and only Smooth in the passing lanes which most times ends up with a turnover right back. Man up Hawks we only talk and blog because we care. SURE WOULD BE NICE IF YOU GUYS DID TOOOOOOOO!!!!! And oh yeah have to stop trading young talent guys also look tired every other good team is not wearing there players out all season(Miami is not a good team just has good players) Management needs to manage!!

You all wanted change, you were tired of Bibby, well you got it. You wanted a change from winning 50 games , improving each year for the last 5 yrs or so and advancing to the second round for a second straight yr. Well you got it. We won’t win 50 and we will be swept in the first round this year. You wanted Coach Woodson gone, he’s gone. But looks to me like he got all he could out of those players on this team. No one can win with this group of players. They layed down on Coach Woodson in the second round last year. they gave up in the second round, now they are laying down in the second half of the season.

Stop looking like two-year olds when things don’t go your way this is the NBA it is supposed to be hard. If it was easy we would be doing it. MAN UP give the city something to feel good about have some pride!!!! Or if management is serious about building a winner it is time to make some real business decisions! But seriously please stop going through the motions. If we were not going to get any better we could have had a our young players getting better that only happens through playing remember those bad teams you guys were on Joe, Jamal, Josh, and Marvin it looks like we are headed back that way if there are no changes made from within!

Hawks will be lucky if they even make it to the playoffs and secure that final spot. If they even made it i really dont wanna sit here and watch them get blown out by good teams. Ball hogs and statistic lovers. No decent anything.
They cant beat Chicago, Miami, Boston and Charlotte. How do you expect them to even get by in the 1st round? I can truely say that only Al Horford really tries out there and shows some heart.
So what do we have to look forward to seeing from the Hawks this season? Double digit blowouts. The only thing the Hawks get excited about is that pay check on friday. Coach is bout as bad as the players and i never understood why the Hawks never pursued Doc Rivers from Boston and buy out his contract.
Seems like the owners of the hawks dont care about winning the championship just as long as they fill the seats such as the case with the Braves years back.
Time Warner didnt spend money on the Braves after they took over, they only wanted the revenue from the sport and if they made the playoffs then fine ….that was a bonus.
This all starts with the owners…….. i dont think they really care about putting a team together to win it all such as Miami did, Boston, Lakers do year end and year out. Larry Drew isnt ready to coach misfits, self centered athletes that only care about themselves.
Joe Johnson shouldve been gone after last season. Hawks re-sign him and give him an inflated salary that at that price we could have went out and got alot better players at that price. He fizzles during playoffs, carries an attitude and cant lead a donkey to a watering hole.
Ive not heard once from the owners how serious they are about putting a team together to win the NBA. You hear Arthur Blank saying that dont you? Not the Hawks or Thrasher Owners making those kind of commitments. Ive totally given up on on the Hawks and Thrashers to do anything now or in the future with the owners at the helm.
Look at where Chicago was 5 years ago and where their at now. People this is about money 110% and greed and everyone has bought into it.
Quit going to the games and hoping…… Their serving us lolly pops on a stick and were only getting the stick. Focus on the Falcons and the Braves and put your money into something where hope is alive and success is possible.

There are no leaders on the Hawks. Have you even heard 1 player stand up and get after guys for sub par performances? Kobe Bryant would….now thats leading. Can you imagine if i say “IF” Kobe was brought to Atlanta? The THUG mentality would be gone, the “self centeredness” would be gone, the Defense would improve and players would be brought out in the open by Kobe.
Kobe demands it from team mates every game. He pushes you to be better and he hates losing PERIOD! Not one Hawk has got up and said “I’m tired of losing by double digits” by mediocre teams. There is no PRIDE in any of the players. The Coaches have no idea how to improve the players out there. Lets face it Drew has no experience in coaching and atleast Woodson had heart.
Ya’ll begged him to get fired but in retrospect it was Joe Johnson complaining about Woodson to the owners and now Woodsons gone and Joe is still here. Coaches get tired of knowing that the Owners only care about money and not results so they dont care about coaching and winning.
Then the players quit listening to the coaches because they know the coaches dont care if they win or lose in the end and just want the money.
So theres no effort to go out and play hard every game because its all about MONEY. Kobe Bryant doesnt care about the money as much as he did when he was younger, Winning is his #1 priority now. We can all sit around and piont the finger at coaches and players but in the end………… it’s the MONEY.
Winning is for the Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, Bulls, Hornets and the Miami Heat. Until the Hawks are sold to a person like Arthur Blank we are just pissing in the wind about nothing. Winning comes from Owners and Management then you get a coach with a proven track record and sign players with great attitudes and their willing to win rather than worry about their statistics and contracts.
If you look at this and face reality you should know this is a Mirage and all they want is the profits the HAWKS generate and not what you think they should do to improve our chances on making the playoffs.
Used to be a Sport but its only about the “Green”.

so….. do we think teague at the point would’ve stopped derrick rose now? come on ! so… do we think iso joe still works? come on ! the hawks have a good team. they have good players . none great . Problem1/ the hawks are a team of players that have great versitility, but no defined roles Problem2( by the way at least woody understood that and tried to keep josh and others in there lanes so everybody isnt trying to do each others job, which is why woody and Josh fought so much!) most of all and last which is truely first on my list great teams have an on the floor leader captain kirk is not that ! bibby is not that ! nor is teague chauncey is a point! derrick rose is a point! deron williams is a point! russel west brook is a point! rondo is a point! get the point!! ATLANTA HAWKS NEED AN ON THE FLOOR LEADER WHO BARKS THE SAME SENTIMENTS AS THE HEAD COACH! keeps the respect of his player in practice on the floor in games knows when to turn and turn it off and share the rock tells others when there on there own sh_t to either fall in line or get off the floor! it should come from the person whos got the rock the most in there hands! Joe is the highest paid supposedy the most talented. just about every night should have the most points and an obvious floor leader , not just another player on the team with a ball rotation offense. wheather Josh makes 3 pointers or not he should be scoring in the paint hes got rasheed wallace syndrome. evrybody is out of position now horford statistically is your best jump shooter on the team THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH DEFINED ROLES !!

Now where on THIS EARTH did this “we are a jump-shooting team” garbage…oops…I mean LIE come from when last year we were tied for 8th in the NBA in scoring in the paint with 43.3 points a game??? What players we added/subtracted during the off-season to validate this so-call change? We gave Joe Johnson that supa-dupa large contract…that’s it. Now do not get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong having big-men able to shoot from the outside AT TIMES, but camped outside during MOST offensive sets is not “NBA Playoffs Basketball”. I have to give Josh Smith (my favorite Hawk) a “pass” this past off-season because of his wedding, but I felt in previous off-seasons he, Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson could have work on low-post foot-work with Hakeem Olajuwon…since they are not comfortable in playing in the paint. Al Horford will go on the blocks and ask for the ball, but in previous years we did not have a PG that wasn’t capable in making those passes. Now we do have one in Kirk Hinrich, but the players still stand around the perimeter waiting for the ball. Again…this is NOT NBA Playoff Basketball. We will be one-and-done this playoffs, which is a step back from last season if we keep this up. And Joe Johnson needs to drive to the basket to draw fouls, just like all teams “go-to-guy” in the NBA, or is he now shell-shock from the left orbital bone fracture injury he had while with Phoenix ? If so, with all due respect, that is TOO MUCH money we are paying a pure jump shooter…TOO MUCH MONEY!

I believe this team has quit on LD!! It is time to bring in a no none sense coach, We need to new owners who care about the product and not just making a buck. This by far is one of the most disappointing seasons in a while. I am really tired of hoping this team will get there acts together. It is time to break this team up, trade Marvin and Josh in return for some players that have a desire to win and understand how to play the game.
As for as LD, its his fault when the team does not do what they did in the first half. Pull the starters if they are not going to do what he is telling them. I know ownership will not be happy with this, but someone has to get this teams attention.

JeJe…it does explain why he’s 6′9″ and got only one rebound. As I stated above he doesn’t hit the offensive boards for possible offensive put-backs since the team in general only passes him the ball when it shot clock is under 5 secs. Joe Johnson hits the boards because he can hog the ball for another 22 secs if he grabs the rebound. Again, I am NOT taking up for Marvin Williams, but he can create offensive on his on by hitting the offensive boards for baskets/free throws. He might FINALLY earn some early-shot-clock touches. I am probably more sick of the organization drafting him rather than selecting Deron Williams, Chris Paul…or even Raymond Felton.

Josh smith lost the game last night with a series of bad shots and turnovers in the 3rd. He destroyed all the offensive momentum with his garbage shots from the perimeter. I swear the guy thinks he is LeBron. He needs to play defense and be athletic and leave the ball handling, decision making, and most importantly the outside shot to someone else. Someone needs to tell Josh that the Hawks have a ton of players who can stand outside and shoot. Josh makes about 1 out of 4 so he thinks he’s good at it. Stay in the post! Be athletic! Play D and rebound! Check your ego! You are Kenyon martin and not Lebron!

For all of you screaming that Josh and Al should go down low and not outside, think about how often they would get the ball. Down low they get the ball about 1 out of every 12 trips down the floor because every one else is jacking up long jumpers and with that comes long rebounds, which the other team gets and they are off and running. This is a coaching problem. The coaches have to enforce the ball goes in low.
Last night was a tale of two teams wearing the same uniforms. In the first half there was ball movement and challenges to the rim. If you watched the game, think about how much the movement changed once Jamal came in. Remembering that Kirk played most of the first half but got into foul trouble early in the 3rd qtr. Once Chicago realized that the point was not going to make the move inside the defense clogged the middle and the Hawks could not make outside shots. Every knows that now and they are going to keep clogging the middle until they start making outside shots or come up with screen plays where a lane is open to the basket and players can make that move to the rim.

Big Daddy…While I do understand your points, last year we were tied for 8th in the NBA with 43.6 PPG in the paint This year they are 27th. This is a flat out lie. Joe has NEVER averaged 5 rebounds a game for the Hawks and the only season he DID in his entire career was for Phoenix in 04-05.
And he’s only averaged over 5 assists for 3 of the last 5 years. And BTW, he’s not even close to averaging 20ppg this year.

Reggie, last year Smoove made a commitment to not shoot long jumpers. Bibby fed him the ball and he responded. This year there may a couple of things that changed the dynamic. With the coaching change, new offense and more movement with the ball on the outside, there is more of a tendency to for outside shots than pushing the ball inside. The other is that I believe that Josh believes there is going to be an effort in the draft or off season to get a legit center in and that will mean that Al moves to the 4 position. If that happens, Josh either gets traded, goes to the bench or move to the 3 slot. You don’t have many SF’s whose post-up are their strong points. So, he is making an effort to fit in at that position. That way he gets to stay and doesn’t end up on a 20 win team.

Joe like dribbing in traffic why other watch in not trying to get open. I dont know why Josh Smith is not getting the ball in the post at lease 10 time a game. He is a good passer. After watching Kirk Hinrich these pass game his basketball I Q is high. Hawk managers you need basketball knowledge. Marvin Williams dont have it and Joe is not worth the price. Stop complaining about the way this team performs. Everyone should know by now whats wrong with this team.

1) HIRE BILL LAIMBEER
2) Sign David West this offseason(Bench JS until some1 ask for his services)
3) Do not resign JC(I like him but we can’t afford to keep him)
4) I’m hoping like heck Keith Benson-c and Darius Moore-pg will be around in the 2nd round. Their stocks are steaded rising so they probably won’t.
After we get rid of JS I hope JJ is next because he disrespect the fans and he’s an arrogant humanbeing.

We have to get a big a true center and move one this team has hit its celing and will not grow and get better like the Pistions who you guys are thinking they could become!!! These 3 still have good value in NBA circle but that can change quick. Move one of them while we still have a chance and we will be left with a good NBA point guard. Two borderline all-stars for 4 more years and a true center ie Chris K from the clippers and anotehr good role player from them like Foye!!!!!! This has to be done this summer!!! Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and others players who are regarded as ALL-STARS set tone for their team.
J.J. MUST SET TONE FOR HIS TEAM FROM START TO FINISH OF A GAME. HE MUST KNOW WHEN TO PASS THE BALL AND WHEN TO SCORE. PREFERRABLY AT THE RIM OR ON FLOATER.

Did you watch Laimbeer play? The man was a player and a coach on the floor. His teammates had the upmost respect for him because he knew how to get his point across. Without Laimbeer I doubt they win those championships. I believe Laimbeer will win a championship with the team that hires him. I hope that team is the Hawks.

I wonder why we even care. I’m in a country with the ground shaking like crazy, people dying and missing all over. But I still find time to watch a crappy display, an inferior product. I guess I wanted my mind taken off of everything. Yet here I watch my hometown team lose again, and lose badly. It was a terrible display. But the interesting thought I had creeping into my brain in the 3rd quarter, was that there’s no one to blame for their misery. I have blamed the coach, the 120 million-dollar man, the lazy and terrible jump shooter in a 6′9″ man’s body, the clumsy and delicate starter who probably wouldn’t have picked himself 2nd overall in a two-man draft. I would basically blame everybody but Al. But no. I realized the Hawks are just a bad team. Why blame players who can’t do more than what they’re already doing. So I won’t. I don’t know why I hadn’t seen it earlier.

Ok Gentlemen and Ladies, let’s revisit something here. I was truly not a fan of Woodson. However, I have noticed that he kept the playes in a position of strength, TOTAL strength! LD is giving the players opportunity to take the strengths of their game and evolve with them but the results are are ruining team cohesiveness and scoring ability as a whole.
Basically, as he allows Horford and Smith to move further from the basket offensively, it severely limits the offensive rebounds because when shots are taken there are NO Hawks in the vicinity of the paint. Also, because Josh is now a small? forward, defensively, he is further from the basket as the opponents shoot and drive to the basket. Horford also has moved further from the paint defensively.
Other coaches and teams are able to take advantage of that because in the past, the mobility and quickness of Horford and Smith against opposing PF’s and C’s were a strength. Now its a liability because Horford is usually has less mobility and quickness than the upper tier PF’s. Same issues with Josh. So the Hawks have subtracted a strength and created a weakness. That being said, MENTALLY Josh is seeing himself as a small forward ALWAYS when he is on the floor and Horford views himself as a Power forward now MENTALLY. In essencein the creation of their new roles, each has lost his interior toughness THROUGHOUT the game. In my opinion, Josh has always been tougher on the glass than Horford anyways and thats no shot at Horford!
To be continued….

DMB,
Despite our shortcomings, what gets a lot of fans riled up is the lack of effort. If the Hawks compete, and give 110% every game, and still lose to a better Lakers team, and still lose to a better Buuls team…so be it.
But to lose the way they do (over and over again) is disturbing.
Najeh,
That LD explanation made no sense at all. And even if it did make sense, the fact that Rose wasnt getting the hard fouls means it was time to try something different.
And given the way Kurt Thomas handled himself against Horford in the Bucks-Hawks playoff series, wouldnt it have made more sense to sign Kurt Thomas instead of Etan?
I think LD needs to make a move. Start Jeff Teague. That way, the starters can compensate for Teague’s (lack of) offense, and Hinrich can play with Jamal and help offset Jamal’s defense.

But that doesnt mean it would translate to these players. If they played the way he played they would get suspended every game.LOL. I feel we need to get rid of the worse players first. Marvin and Pachulia are garbage but they get minutes. Josh ticked me off last night, but I think he is better than most SF in the league. Bibby still needs to be here. He was not the problem. We needed a center. Maybe this offseason that will be the goal and also resigning JC

Kidding aside, like it or not this J.J.’s team. We might wish that it were Al’s but it’s not. When J.J. announces to the world that we are a jump shooting team, does it occur to you that he is signaling that L.D. has made them a jump shooting team and maybe just maybe J.J. doesn’t like it.
Look at how they are playing, they’re are not even trying to do the things insde that we have seen them do in the past. I’m telling you, the guys are saying we don’t want this jump shooting system. Just a thought.
Also, L.D. is already in survival mode. Instead of giving guys roles and playing eight or nine guys, he’s doing he scared Woody thing of primarily playing six guys.
At the end of the day, what happens in the playoffs is all that matters for this team.

smdh@LD. So he didn’t think Jamal not being able to stay in front of D Rose was not a problem? When your coach says things like that its easy to see why this team plays the way it does….Woodson had to go but so did many of these guys on the roster. When a team that hasn’t won anything quits on their coach you dont bring them all back as if it didn’t happen. Woodson wasn’t the only problem. They should have hired a whole new staff and shipped some guys out of here. Marvin must have some pictures of the owners because there is no reason this dude still starts… I thought they played better when Teague was starting. He was playing some good defense and the ball movement was a lot better. Start Teague and Zaza because at this point it couldn’t hurt.

It is clear trading Bibby did not rattle the cages, because that was a move that had to be made (given Bibby’s struggles).
If LD really wants to rattle the cages, and get the players fired up (one way or the other)..strip Josh, Al and JJ of their captaincy. This team has lacked leadership for years, and (imo) this year is no different. I think Al could be a good captain if he was the only one, but I think JJ and Josh make it tough (not necessarily their fault) on Al to take full reins. Everybody still looks up to JJ for leadership (although he basically leads by example), and Josh is a kamikaze, so you never know what to expect from him.
Name one captain. Kirk Hinrich. He has not been a part of this culture, so maybe he will be able to help facilitate change. He can call the plays on the floor, and when guys get jumper happy, he can get on them (like a captain should). Right now, he is still the new guy, and there are 3 captains, so chances are he wont feel free to speak up the way he wants to.
Is it drastic? Sure. Would it be a sign of panic? Maybe. But nothing else seems to be working, so why not? And if the players rebel, then that lets Rick know who he needs to trade this off-season.
Comments? Feedback?

You can’t blame the coach for players being soft. You either have enough toughness/heart to knock a PG on his ass who keeps getting easy layups or you don’t. Take the tech or get ejected but don’t sit back and keep taking it. Where’s the frustration on defense? If you force a team to take long jumpers and they keep knocking them down then fine, but how many PGs do we have to watch blow by the first defender for easy layups before someone on this Hawks team grows a pair and puts an elbow in somebody’s throat? We need at least one guy whose primary goal is too break people’s balls and frustrate the other team – Rodman style if necessary.
We also have too many ball handlers. Get the ball to Hinrich early and let him run the offense. Surely he’d get these guys to stop posting up around the 3 point line and running those stupid ISOs even when they see the game is going downhill quickly.
Has anyone seen LD get in anybody’s face during the game. I’d love to see a little tyrant come out of him at some point. He never seems concerned until it’s waaaay too late (post-game press conference).

Jt has to force the pace of the game & shouldn’t defer to anyone, probably lt wouldn’t allow this.hell he will not let him play at all. This team has to start playing a hell of a lot more aggressive on defense.jj sets such a bad example,i’ve so often seen him back on the fast break not even trying to stop the offensive player. By bing physical I don’t mean take there heads off like zazza does. This league permits a certain amount of physicality which we never apply. More typical is like jj swatting at the ball with his hands defensively or pushing players away with his hands offensively this will not do it

@The Game Has Changed…
You are also correct.
Joe Johnson is the subject of my “to be continued”!
His game has not translated well with the motion offense. If you take a good hard look at JJ’s game, you will notice that offensively, he does not look to get an open shot, he looks to get HIS open shot. Joe can recieve the ball in a catch and shoot situation but he RARELY does that. It is imperative for him tolook at the spacing on the floor and get to a favorable position according to what he desires. Regardless, of how many open cuts there are, the cuts will go unnoticed until he gets to where he wishes to be. He will then seek out someone to pass to if he is then not in an advantageous position. The problem with that is by the time he has gotten to that position, EVERYONE has stopped moving….
He is then forced to make a bad pass or a tough shot because the shot clock is at 8 or below. Believe it or not, Josh is the recipient of many of those passes because his man is now sagging onto Joe which has left Josh open. By the way, the recipient use to be Marvin with even worse results…

O’Brien,
Here’s my comment: If LD has not already lost JJ and Josh, he CERTAINLY would lose both if he stripped them of their captaincy. I think Al would take it like a man, because he’s more “team first”. I think it’s an excellent idea in theory, but in actuality LD doesn’t have enough “political capital” to do that.
Too bad, we didn’t trade Jamal for Kirk in the off season (as you and I wished) and he could have been captain right off the bat. Plus, we’d have Bibby coming off the bench like he should have been.

Hire the ex Cavs Coach? U mean Mike Brown? Did you ever read the blog of Cleveland fans? They complained about Mike Brown…Too much ISO (even with LeBron), and his substitutions were inconsistent. However, he emphasized defense (sounds a lot like Woody imo).
Sautee,
JJ might be frustrated with the situation right now, but he is so quiet, he just goes about his business. And I think he ismature enough to handle it.
Would LD lose Josh? Possibly. but Josh is so up and down anyway…maybe that would convince Rick that he needs to trade Josh this offseason.
And just because players are stripped of their captaincy doesnt mean they can’t speak up. it just means that when the captain speaks, they should listen.
Or here is another idea. Just name a 4th captain

this team needs an enima to get rid of all this crapy on this roster. no one is untouchable. trade Marvin,JJ,Smoove,Horford, and Crawford. we need some hard nosed players. I know with the size of JJ’s contract he will be nearly impossible to move. and we probably won’t get good enough return on Horford. so I would try to move Smoove and Marvin to the bucks for Bogut and Maggette and a draft pick. I know Maggette contract is rather large, but atleast he will get into the paint and to the free throw line when our jump shots aren’t falling. then go after free agents.
here is a list of the ones I would want because they are either a specialist with something, fills a need, or an ex-star and/or ex-superstar with something to prove. I will start of with ex-stars…
Tayshaun Prince, T-Mac, Michael Redd, and Jason Richardson. now specialist….
Sasha(three point), Chuck Hayes( rebound tough guy), Luther Head(Scoring), JR Smith(Scoring), Andrei Kirilinko( defensive) and last fills a need are centers Nazr Mohammed, Tyson Chandler, and Samuel Dalembert. I say we get six of these guys and let our free agents go. yes even Jamal crawford. my choice would be Prince, T-Mac, Redd, Hayes,Sasha,, and Nazr Mohammed( only because I don’t think Cuban would let Chandler go, he would out bid us big time.
line up could look something like this
T Mac/ Kirk/ Teague
JJ/ Redd/kirk/Sasha
Prince/Maggette/Sasha
Horford/Chuck Hayes
Bogut/Dalembert/Zaza

for all of you folks crying for us to hire laimbeer as coach forget about it! i met him a few years ago while shooting camera underneath the basket for a dream game vs detroit. i saw laimbeer about 2hrs before the game and thought i would go over and talk to him and let him know as a hawks fan i really hated him but that i would have loved him if he played for the hawks.
what a horses rear end he was to me…his reply, ” you’re a hawks fan?” “bunch of p*ssy’s.” he went on to call rick mahorn over to us and told mahorn that i was a hawks fan and asked mahorn do you see any banners in here? put his hand above is eyes as if he was looking above for banners. i said well mahorn used to be a coach here and mahorn said yeah back in my “losing days.”
the guys (laimbeer and mahorn) were complete jerks to me the rest of the entire game. during timeouts of the game while i was shooting their team huddle for fox sports south he would look at me and put his hand over his eyes and look at the rafters as if he was looking for banners. and while he’s probably right about all of his statements–i told him that those atlanta teams they beat while he was in detroit were better teams than the pistons but every time the pistons got behind they would just foul someone hard and get into a fight with the hawks.
after the game ended–don’t remember who won–laimbeer comes to me and says hey camera-man–keep rooting for your hawks–”you have more heart than they do.”

Same story different Teller.
I’ve been a big supporter of LD since his promotion, but he’s losing credibility from my perspective;
~He promised to go deep in his bench
-This has not been the case. In fact he may rely more on his starters than Woodson did. Bibby was horrible this whole year, but kept his starting job till the end. Last night, Smoove had 5 HORRIBLE posessions in a row in the 2nd half with two turnovers and three bad shots, BUT after the obligatory timeout, LD sends back out on to the floor. Al has played way too many minutes in the second half this year WITHOUT the necessary shot attempts.
~LD said he can make adjustments.
-Lately, his big adjustment has been to cut Zaza’s minutes so he can play Josh Powell????
~LD had an offense the NBA had never seen before.
-we’re still waiting.
All in all, it is imperative the Hawks adjust the starting lineup to a more traditional configuration. Start Zaza at center, Al at 4, and Smoove at 3. The benefits of starting Al at 5 for athleticism and transtition opportunities are not working out on offense or defense. Marvin seems indiffferent if we win or lose and Zaza is the only dude playing with energy.

you guys maybe right the more i think about it…but i was trying to give laimbeer a compliment…probably worded it the wrong way. he was my kind of player..white guy who could shoot, box out, pass and played smart…my point was that i hated him as a hawks fan but would have loved him had he played for them!!!!

ajchawks Correction on #Hawks starters: Teague, Hinrich, Johnson, Smith, @zaza27. Drew: “We’ve lost 4 in row. Got to shake things up.”
Teague starts…cool

Mr Not Sund;
Your funny,
LD made JJ a jumpshooter & the Hawks
a jump shooting team, which Joe & the players
don’t like. Therefore, they wish to go back to
going inside like before. Huh? Seriously.
Joe does not have the IQ to learn the “motion” offense.
Joe = not smart.
Therefore, if this is Joe’s team,
Joe’s team = not smart.
Also Joe = stubborn, selfish, apathetic, introverted, & superficial.

No coach is gong to help with this joke of an ownership, although Drew clearly isn’t the answer either. You have two players worth building around, but neither of them is the “best”, (J, Johnson), or the idiot who thinks he’s “best”, J. Smith. They are both losers, and so are the fans until someone with a clue buys this team.

Sad state of affairs in Hawksville. They lose tonight, might as well pack it up for the season.
Josh was a big culprit in that 3rd qrt meltdown. He threw the ball away in 4 successive trips trying to force a pass. He probably had 5 turnovers in the 3rd.
What is wrong with the Hawks? How can you play great in the 1st half and actually had a lead, and you turn around and do the exact opposite in the 2nd half. This is crazy!
Hawks sucks!

Horford out tonight. Teague starting at point, Hinrich at 2. Marvin on the bench. Sucks having Horford out, but I like this lineup much better.

I’m glad LD is changing it up. Maybe JJ at SF will get going. And I like Marvin coming off the bench.
That being said, I would have gone with Teague, JJ, Damien, Josh and ZaZa. And then bring Hinrich, Jamal, and Marvin off the bench (that’s a very strong bench imo).

I don’t understand LD, he won’t play LD against Rosey last night, but now he starts the kid, lol this guy confuses me. Also a negative to this means Jamal instant PG off the bench, so lookout for that.

When your key players stop doing in the 2nd half what was so successful for them in the 1st half, I PLACE THE BLAME SQUARELY IN THE LAP OF THE HC. There is no rule that I know of that prevents a HC from benching any player(s), particularly veteran players, when they refuse to do as they’re told.
I’m getting sick of all these lame excuses from Drew. It didn’t work for Woodson, and it won’t work for him. A real HC is one that can coach a team out of a slump, or prevent a team from having a slump in the 1st place. How in the devil can he expect our frontline players, who were already in early foul trouble, to start taking hard fouls?
You’re telling me he doesn’t have sense enough to know that if our perimeter defenders had kept Rose out of the paint in the 1st place, like we did in our last meeting, there would have been no need to knock anybody down. This is a repeat of the same BS excuses, approach and bias that we routinely got from Woodson.

When is Josh just gonna let the guards run the break? Pass the ball, outrun the other team’s 4, and get a Sportscenter highlight. How hard is that?
