Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 94, Hawks 76

D-Rose did a lot of this to the Hawks. (Chris Sweda, McClatchy-Tribune)

D-Rose did a lot of this to the Hawks. (Chris Sweda, McClatchy-Tribune)

ChicagoKirk Hinrich is new to these Hawks. He sounds like he can’t quite understand why the Hawks recognize what works for them but can’t stick with their plans now that the competition has toughened.

  • “In the second half it was like we forgot everything we did in the first half,” Hinrich said.
  • I doubt this will be the last time he expresses such a sentiment.
  • The Hawks scored 30 points in the second quarter. They made 13 of 21 shots, were 5 of 8 in the paint and had two turnovers. Jamal and Al had the two-man game going and J.J.made a couple jumpers.
  • In the third quarter, the Hawks scored 10 points. They missed 11 of 15 shots, were 1 for 2 in the paint and had five turnovers.
  • “I don’t think we did what we did in the first half to stick around which is move the basketball and get good looks,” J.J. said. “We started playing a lot of one-on-one and our shot selection wasn’t the greatest.”
  • “We definitely didn’t have the movement we had in the first half,” Jamal said.
  • To be sure, the game changed because D-Rose decided he was going to change it. But L.D. and the Hawks hardly did all they could to prevent it.
  • The coach stuck with a Jamal-J.J. backcourt when Hinrich was in foul trouble. The players did little to discourage Rose from dancing into the lane.
  • “Rose got to the basket at will against us,” Drew said. “He attacked the paint and we couldn’t keep him in front of us. We tried a few zone possessions but he still got there.”
  • Did L.D. consider sending in Teague for a crack at slowing Rose’s slices to the rim?
  • “Thought about it but that to me that wasn’t the real issue at that point, him getting into the lane,” Drew said. “We did nothing with a physicality as far as taking any hard fouls. That was my thought process. Even when he was getting to the line, we did nothing about giving hard fouls. I don’t care who you are playing against, if you play that soft, you are going to have problems in the paint.”
  • The problems extended to the glass, where the Bulls hammered the Hawks 50-28. The Bulls are the league’s best rebounding team, so this was a game where the Hawks desperately needed someone other than Al (seven rebounds) and Josh (six) to hit the boards.
  • They got four rebounds in 17 minutes from Zaza and not much else. Marvin had one in 18 minutes. L.D. went with Wilkins and he had three in 21 minutes.
  • Even with Boozer (ankle) sidelined, Chicago’s front line of Noah, Hawks nemesis Kurt Thomas , Taj Gibson and Omer Asik combined for 31 rebounds. Denghad more rebounds than Marvin and Damien combined in his 40 minutes.
  • “They are a good rebounding team,” L.D. said. “They did a great job, which we expected. They did a tremendous job in attacking the glass. Both Noah and Kurt, he still has a little in his tank. He gets to the glass as well. I thought Gibson got to the glass. It’s nothing we didn’t expect. We are a team that’s had problems with the glass, and going into this game we wanted to pay particular attention to that, keep them off the glass and limit them.”
  • The Hawks trailed 22-20 after the first quarter, when the Bulls missed some open 3s and Rose got into foul trouble. Joe made an effort to get into the lane early but, in contrast to Rose, was met by a sea of hands and bodies and kept losing his handle on the ball.
  • “It was tough,” Joe said. “A lot of that could have gone either way. It happens. I have been and we have been going through a rut these last few games. We will get out of it tomorrow.”
  • Josh had success spinning into the lane even if it was tough to finish down there. Things didn’t go so well when he had to dribble before making his move. He also missed both of his 3-point attempts as part of a 1 for 5 effort from beyond 15 feet.
  • But at least Josh was willing to go hard to the basket and earned nine free-throw attempts. Horford, Marvin, Jamal, Zaza and Damien had none.
  • “It was physical,” L.D. said. “We got the ball down low. I didn’t think we went away from it. We still went down to it we just came away empty-handed. A team like Chicago they have size, they have length. We were pretty much prepared for their double teams.”
  • After he started 5 for 5 from the field and seemed to be in a flow, Jamal had just three shot attempts after halftime. The Hawks lately don’t seem able to go to whichever guy has it going.
  • Al had five assists. He seemed reluctant to go around or shoot over Thomas.
  • The Hawks have been better defensively since Hinrich arrived but the offense has stalled.
  • “It’s a little bit of an adjustment,” Hinrich said. “The Hawks play a little different than any team I’ve ever been on. We have a lot of guys who post up and most of the teams I’ve been on haven’t had much of a post-up presence. A lot of isos. We have a lot of versatility. A lot of guys who can handle the ball. I think it’s a good fit. We just have to find a way to help each other on both ends.”
  • The Hawks have lost four in a row for the first time since November.
  • “We still have a lot more basketball left,” Joe said. “We have just got to stay positive and get out of this little rut we are in. I’m pretty sure I know tomorrow with us going back home knowing we have to get off this skid we have got to come out on all cylinders and try to get us one.”
  • “We have got to get up,” L.D. said. “This is the NBA. All teams go through trials and tribulations. We are one of the teams at that time. It’s not a time to hang your head. It’s a time to look in the mirror and come out and bounce back. This is no different than what a lot of the other teams have gone through. This is a time to see what we are made of.”

Orlando lost at Golden State. It’s amazing how the Hawks keep getting breaks left and right (Perkins injury, Billups injury, Boozer injury, Orlando slumping, Miami slumping…) and yet they can’t even come close to taking advantage.

nahej, sorry dude but josh has got to go.

how long to we have tolerate his inability to play off the ball defense.

how long do we have to tolerate a poward foward that has zero ability to play in the low posst.

how long till he can learn to dribble with his right hand.

how long dow we have to tolerate our poward foward floating around the arc.

how frickin long, with his pouting. he is a coach killer.

ask any g.m.

great defensive players deny the ball. smoove is only concerned about blocking shots. he is a absolute waste of the physical gifts he has.

Joe Johnson: “…we are a jump-shooting team. If shots are falling then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are jump shooters. That’s pretty much what it is.”

Can you imagine Dominique Wilkins saying, “we are a dunking team. If dunks are falling then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are dunkers. That’s pretty much what it is.”

Or Magic Johnson saying, “we are a passing team. If passes are working then, great, we are rolling. But one through five, we all are passers. That’s pretty much what it is.”

‘Nique came into the league with hardly any skills but dunking the ball, but year after year he continued to add to his game and worked to become a better all around player. ‘Nique, Magic, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan,…those guys were never satisfied to simply be one dimensional, or pretty good. They wanted to be complete players. They wanted to be winners. The same can be said about Kobe Bryant and a few more of today’s star players,…

…but not Joe Johnson. No, Joe is a jump shooter.

If the shots are falling, then great. If not – Oh well.

Joe is still going to get paid. What does he care?

What we really need is to start Teague and left Kurt finish @ least he can offer a change of pace. Second we all need to call out Josh for his poor decisions shooting and ball-handling. Joe for his approach of not earning that much money but even if he is struggling he should look like Ray Allen and go to the gym and shoot 300 shoots before the game to try and get out of the slump. (Jamal Crawford too) Marvin Williams needs to decide if he wants to attempt being a BBall pro or just continue going through the motions 25-82 games a year. And last but not least LD needs to not be more like Woody and let J Teague play it can’t be any worse than what we already have no transition points, no one pressuring the ball although Kurt tries, and only Smooth in the passing lanes which most times ends up with a turnover right back. Man up Hawks we only talk and blog because we care. SURE WOULD BE NICE IF YOU GUYS DID TOOOOOOOO!!!!! And oh yeah have to stop trading young talent guys also look tired every other good team is not wearing there players out all season(Miami is not a good team just has good players) Management needs to manage!!

You all wanted change, you were tired of Bibby, well you got it. You wanted a change from winning 50 games , improving each year for the last 5 yrs or so and advancing to the second round for a second straight yr. Well you got it. We won’t win 50 and we will be swept in the first round this year. You wanted Coach Woodson gone, he’s gone. But looks to me like he got all he could out of those players on this team. No one can win with this group of players. They layed down on Coach Woodson in the second round last year. they gave up in the second round, now they are laying down in the second half of the season.

We also need better body language we use to look athletic now even when we make a mistake it looks like it is the end of the world. Stop looking like two-year olds when things don’t go your way this is the NBA it is supposed to be hard. If it was easy we would be doing it. MAN UP give the city something to feel good about have some pride!!!! Or if management is serious about building a winner it is time to make some real business decisions! But seriously please stop going through the motions. If we were not going to get any better we could have had a our young players getting better that only happens through playing remember those bad teams you guys were on Joe, Jamal, Josh, and Marvin it looks like we are headed back that way if there are no changes made from within!

Hawks will be lucky if they even make it to the playoffs and secure that final spot. If they even made it i really dont wanna sit here and watch them get blown out by good teams. Ball hogs and statistic lovers. No decent anything.
They cant beat Chicago, Miami, Boston and Charlotte. How do you expect them to even get by in the 1st round? I can truely say that only Al Horford really tries out there and shows some heart.
So what do we have to look forward to seeing from the Hawks this season? Double digit blowouts. The only thing the Hawks get excited about is that pay check on friday. Coach is bout as bad as the players and i never understood why the Hawks never pursued Doc Rivers from Boston and buy out his contract.
Seems like the owners of the hawks dont care about winning the championship just as long as they fill the seats such as the case with the Braves years back.
Time Warner didnt spend money on the Braves after they took over, they only wanted the revenue from the sport and if they made the playoffs then fine ….that was a bonus.
This all starts with the owners…….. i dont think they really care about putting a team together to win it all such as Miami did, Boston, Lakers do year end and year out. Larry Drew isnt ready to coach misfits, self centered athletes that only care about themselves.
Joe Johnson shouldve been gone after last season. Hawks re-sign him and give him an inflated salary that at that price we could have went out and got alot better players at that price. He fizzles during playoffs, carries an attitude and cant lead a donkey to a watering hole.
Ive not heard once from the owners how serious they are about putting a team together to win the NBA. You hear Arthur Blank saying that dont you? Not the Hawks or Thrasher Owners making those kind of commitments. Ive totally given up on on the Hawks and Thrashers to do anything now or in the future with the owners at the helm.
Look at where Chicago was 5 years ago and where their at now. People this is about money 110% and greed and everyone has bought into it.
Quit going to the games and hoping…… Their serving us lolly pops on a stick and were only getting the stick. Focus on the Falcons and the Braves and put your money into something where hope is alive and success is possible.

There are no leaders on the Hawks. Have you even heard 1 player stand up and get after guys for sub par performances? Kobe Bryant would….now thats leading. Can you imagine if i say “IF” Kobe was brought to Atlanta? The THUG mentality would be gone, the “self centeredness” would be gone, the Defense would improve and players would be brought out in the open by Kobe.
Kobe demands it from team mates every game. He pushes you to be better and he hates losing PERIOD! Not one Hawk has got up and said “I’m tired of losing by double digits” by mediocre teams. There is no PRIDE in any of the players. The Coaches have no idea how to improve the players out there. Lets face it Drew has no experience in coaching and atleast Woodson had heart.
Ya’ll begged him to get fired but in retrospect it was Joe Johnson complaining about Woodson to the owners and now Woodsons gone and Joe is still here. Coaches get tired of knowing that the Owners only care about money and not results so they dont care about coaching and winning.
Then the players quit listening to the coaches because they know the coaches dont care if they win or lose in the end and just want the money.
So theres no effort to go out and play hard every game because its all about MONEY. Kobe Bryant doesnt care about the money as much as he did when he was younger, Winning is his #1 priority now. We can all sit around and piont the finger at coaches and players but in the end………… it’s the MONEY.
Winning is for the Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, Bulls, Hornets and the Miami Heat. Until the Hawks are sold to a person like Arthur Blank we are just pissing in the wind about nothing. Winning comes from Owners and Management then you get a coach with a proven track record and sign players with great attitudes and their willing to win rather than worry about their statistics and contracts.
If you look at this and face reality you should know this is a Mirage and all they want is the profits the HAWKS generate and not what you think they should do to improve our chances on making the playoffs.
Used to be a Sport but its only about the “Green”.

so….. do we think teague at the point would’ve stopped derrick rose now? come on ! so… do we think iso joe still works? come on ! the hawks have a good team. they have good players . none great . Problem1/ the hawks are a team of players that have great versitility, but no defined roles Problem2( by the way at least woody understood that and tried to keep josh and others in there lanes so everybody isnt trying to do each others job, which is why woody and Josh fought so much!) most of all and last which is truely first on my list great teams have an on the floor leader captain kirk is not that ! bibby is not that ! nor is teague chauncey is a point! derrick rose is a point! deron williams is a point! russel west brook is a point! rondo is a point! get the point!! ATLANTA HAWKS NEED AN ON THE FLOOR LEADER WHO BARKS THE SAME SENTIMENTS AS THE HEAD COACH! keeps the respect of his player in practice on the floor in games knows when to turn and turn it off and share the rock tells others when there on there own sh_t to either fall in line or get off the floor! it should come from the person whos got the rock the most in there hands! Joe is the highest paid supposedy the most talented. just about every night should have the most points and an obvious floor leader , not just another player on the team with a ball rotation offense. wheather Josh makes 3 pointers or not he should be scoring in the paint hes got rasheed wallace syndrome. evrybody is out of position now horford statistically is your best jump shooter on the team THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH DEFINED ROLES !!

Now where on THIS EARTH did this “we are a jump-shooting team” garbage…oops…I mean LIE come from when last year we were tied for 8th in the NBA in scoring in the paint with 43.3 points a game??? What players we added/subtracted during the off-season to validate this so-call change? We gave Joe Johnson that supa-dupa large contract…that’s it. Now do not get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong having big-men able to shoot from the outside AT TIMES, but camped outside during MOST offensive sets is not “NBA Playoffs Basketball”. I have to give Josh Smith (my favorite Hawk) a “pass” this past off-season because of his wedding, but I felt in previous off-seasons he, Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson could have work on low-post foot-work with Hakeem Olajuwon…since they are not comfortable in playing in the paint. Al Horford will go on the blocks and ask for the ball, but in previous years we did not have a PG that wasn’t capable in making those passes. Now we do have one in Kirk Hinrich, but the players still stand around the perimeter waiting for the ball. Again…this is NOT NBA Playoff Basketball. We will be one-and-done this playoffs, which is a step back from last season if we keep this up. And Joe Johnson needs to drive to the basket to draw fouls, just like all teams “go-to-guy” in the NBA, or is he now shell-shock from the left orbital bone fracture injury he had while with Phoenix ? If so, with all due respect, that is TOO MUCH money we are paying a pure jump shooter…TOO MUCH MONEY!

I believe this team has quit on LD!! It is time to bring in a no none sense coach, We need to new owners who care about the product and not just making a buck. This by far is one of the most disappointing seasons in a while. I am really tired of hoping this team will get there acts together. It is time to break this team up, trade Marvin and Josh in return for some players that have a desire to win and understand how to play the game.

As for as LD, its his fault when the team does not do what they did in the first half. Pull the starters if they are not going to do what he is telling them. I know ownership will not be happy with this, but someone has to get this teams attention.

JeJe – I did not catch much of the Hawks game on NBA TV, but historically this team freezes out Marvin Williams. He only gets the ball with a couple of secs left on the shot clock after JJ or J-Craw is stuck without a clean-open-jumper. Not taking up for Williams, because he still won’t hit the paint waiting for the rest of the team bad shots, but they don’t look at Marvin…not at all.
