Atlanta Hawks at Bulls: Drew says low post is priority

Chicago–Plan A hasn’t been working for the Hawks’ offense.

What does L.D. want to see tonight instead of jumpers?

“First, establish ourselves in the low post,” he said. “If the ball does come on the kick out, everything doesn’t have to be a three. We are sitting outside, sitting at that 3-point line, [and] we can move in closer. Instead of turning it into a 3, turn it into an 18- to 20-footer. Our drive-and-kick game has to be up to par, force them to not just defend a shot on the closeout but teams have to have a fear about closing out and putting the ball on the floor.”

Even considering their poor 3-point shooting as of late, this season the 3-pointer has been (not surprisingly) much better for the Hawks than long 2-pointers. Then again, Bibby is gone and J.J. is in a slide, leaving Smoove as the team’s best 3-point shooter (not counting Al’s 2 for 4 and Twin’s 1 for 1).

L.D. dismissed Al’s back injury as a factor in his game moving outside.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “I think sometimes players they stay with what’s comfortable to them. Obviously he is making jump shots but both he and Josh have to establish themselves down in the low post still. We run plays to get them involved in the post and they have got to establish themselves in there.

“Just keep mixing it up. I don’t want them to be predictable in what they do. I want their overall offensive game to be hard to predict because they both have the ability to play inside and out.”

Game notes . . .

  • “Normal” lineup for Hawks: Hinrich, J.J., Marvin, Josh, Al. Etan and Pape are inactive.
  • Boozer is out for the Bulls and Kurt Thomas will take his place. Luol Deng is a game-time decision.
  • Even with Boozer out, the Bulls still have Thomas, Noah, Omar Asik and Taj Gibson on the front line. No wonder they managed to keep winning despite Boozer missing 15 games and Noah sitting out 30 (of course it also helps to have D-Rose and that Noah’s absence from Dec. 18 to Feb. 17 coincided with a soft spot in Chicago’s schedule).
  • Said Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau: “We’ve had injuries before with with Boozer and Joakim out. We feel like we have quality bigs up front and all of them have started.”
  • After Al went off for 31 and 16 in the first meeting, Thibodeau said Gibson would be part of a gang effort against him: “At different times he will guard him. All of the bigs will. All four guys give us different looks. He’s a tough matchup.”
  • Hinrich was asked how the Hawks held down D-Rose last time: “He missed shots.”

It seems like teams are really starting to put more a larger defensive focus on Al these days. It’s clear that his offensive game has gotten the attention of opposing coaches and teams. That’s a good thing, since it makes our attack less one-dimensional. No longer are teams just keying in on Joe the way they were last season (for the most part). You can’t take away everything. The more you focus on one guy, the more often the other 4 guys are open.

I sincerely hope that the Hawks will listen to LD and make the post a priority. An NOT just the first couple of trips. Joe, this means YOU.

Here goes LD saying intelligent things again. I’ve been saying the Hawks should go through the low post for a good two years now. Does anyone really expect any of his talk to result in action at this point?

My guess is Rose avenges his lackluster game from last week, the Hawks hang around for much of the game, but end up losing by 8 thanks to some well-timed, momentum killing 3’s by Chicago. That team gets all the breaks at home, with or without Boozer.

Also, the Hawks better get a body on the Bulls’ bigs, especially Asik. I’m tired of seeing them play good defense and force the other team into a bad shot with 2 or 3 left on the shot clock, only to see them come away with the offensive board. That has happened way too often over the last few games. Put Zaza on Asik exclusively if necessary.

Well at least they went to the low post on the first possession. Marvin got the ball a little outside of his range in the post. Then they come down and forget about the low post the second time down leading to a Smoove 3 with very little on the clock. So that lasted all of one possession.

I thought the game plan was to “First, establish ourselves in the low post”. Why does Al only have 1 field goal attempt when he really the only big man we have available (Josh is out with foul trouble) to post up? Sometimes, the Hawks just don’t make sense.

Even if it’s not in the low post, why are we not trying to get Al more involved in the offense? Every starter has more attempts than him already. Even Marvin Williams has 3 attempts.

The D was fine until Jamal came into the game. Can’t have him in unless you have someone who can challenge shots at the rim.

The O still needs a ton of work. At this point, any possession run through Joe is a wasted possession.

I’d like to see Teague in whenever Kirk goes out. There is no reason whatsoever why Jamal should be running the point. LD put in Damien to go with Jamal in the back court instead of Teague, which makes no sense since the Bulls don’t have a scoring 2 guard.

For the record, Najeh, yes, I was complaining about Josh’s jump shots. Almost every one of them was contested. I’m fine with him playing on the low block, but just in case you didn’t notice, the majority of his shots have been long jump shots, and he has missed the majority of those shots. His made only one of his jump shots, meanwhile making 3 of his shots in the paint (one of them was a fast break dunk).

Even if he’s making those jumpers, if they are contest long jump shots, early in the shot clock, I do not approve of him taking those shots. I don’t encourage bad shots, even if they’re going down.

Think of it this way: If Joe was isolating every time down the floor and dribbling out the clock before shooting tough, contested jumpers, but he had made 5-10 of those tough shots, would you still want him taking those shots? I wouldn’t.

How does Dominique expect Josh to just stick and go with 4 seconds on the shot clock, and 3 Bulls in the lane waiting to draw a charge? Also Nique always talks about making the extra pass, but how many times in the playoffs did Niue choose not to make that ‘extra’ pass?

JT solidifies the Starting unit. He is the oly person who consistantly draws fouls on the opposing team. He’s the only one who does not constantly chuck jumpshots, and honeslty, he will probably end up being our best post player A la Tony Parker. Besides, Offensive production is not needed at the start of the game, defense is.

very true. that’s why i said *try*. if there was a fantasy draft in the nba, and the hawks could have anybody they wanted (lebron, wade, carmelo, kobe, d.rose, dwight), they’d all be sitting there, and we’d take eduardo najera.

that’s how terrible this thing is from top to bottom.

It’s not a coincidence that the Hawks beat the Bulls without Josh and lost with him. No one on the Hawks team had a bigger impact on this game than Josh Smith, and that impact was mostly negative.

The Hawks are a smarter and more efficient team without Josh Smith. The shot distribution is better, Al is more involved and more aggressive, and even our rebounding is better, since our bigs box out. Outside of Josh, almost every big man on the roster does a good job of boxing out.

We are a better team without Josh, plain and simple. I don’t care how much some of you bloggers argue with me, I’m not changing my mind on this. I am convinced that Josh is a serious problem for our team. We have other problems, but he’s one of the biggest ones. He makes his teammates worse and just has a negative impact on the team when things aren’t going well in a game.

LD says that playing in the low post is a priority and ISO Joe says the “SOFT’S” are a jump shooting team. The game is still going on and what I am seeing is a jump shooting team that can’t hit the side of a barn from 5 feet in front of them. Whose message is the team following because it is not LD’s. I saw this loss coming from the first quarter because I knew that the “smoove” fella was gonna launch it and try and make unbelievable passes all night. It was over in the 3rd. Our 20 mill ISO Joe was his usual outstanding self(sarcasm). Marvin the 11 mill man did his thing too, which is “NOTHING THAT RESEMBLES BASKETBALL”. They are not listening to LD or they just don’t give a crap or they are the dumbest group of ball players in NBA history. I feel for Heinrich, he’s been a class act all of his career and Al will be ruined if he has to go thru another season with these guys, so will Teague and Armstrong and I know, we must keep ISO and that friggin “smoove” fella but this time we need a no nonsense coach. Mr. D. Wilkins the true Human Highlight reel is the MAN!. Once we have no way to get into the playoffs the younguns need to play more, they would be more entertaining. Also, the game plan was supposed to establish ourselves in the low post first, yet the team does almost the exact opposite. If the players on the floor aren’t doing what you want, why do you keep them in the game? Come on, L.D.? Are you really that much of an amateur?

I, honestly, do not even know why Marvin played at all tonight. He really gave us nothing on either end. Tonight was just a terrible game, both by the players and the coach. Bad execution and terrible coaching. I guess that’s basically the Hawks in a nutshell.

What makes you guys think that if CP3, DWill, and/or Bynum came here that they would be developed into the players they are now? Just because they are great now does not mean they would’ve been great here. I am actually glad they did not come here because they would not be where they are today if they did. You want proof, look at Jordan Crawford. Granted he is on a bad team, he is now getting the opportunity to develop, one thing he could not get while he was here. Steve W,

LD will probably say “the Bulls have the best home record in the East, so we knew it would be a struggle. We just ran out of gas in the second half”

Look how soft New York’s schedule is the rest of the way. No question they overtake the Hawks. First round sweep by the Heat?

From MC’s article;

“The Hawks are 4-10 since Feb. 8 and dropped to 10-18 in games against opponents with winning records.” MC .

That’s a 36% win percentage against teams with winning records. I wonder how they compare to other playoff teams.

Turrible team loss tonight.

WHAT A JOKE. LARRY DREW IS THE ULTIMATE BUTT KISSER. HE TALKS “AFTER” THE GAMES INSTEAD OF “DURING” THEM!

1. JOSH SMITH – WILL NEVER MAKE AN ALL STAR TEAM
2. JJ – WILL BE IN A WHEEL CHAIR PLAYING FOR THE HAWKS AND GETTIN PAID
3. TEAGUE, MARVIN AND ZAZA SUCKS
4. JAMAL – NO DEFENSE AT ALL
5. SUND – DUMBEST GM IN THE GAME!!!!!!

Time to start things up. I declare that its time for Drew to go. He had his chance but he refuses to make the adjustments needed to win basketball games. We need a coach that will play people based on performance not favoritism.

What makes you guys think that if CP3, DWill, and/or Bynum came here that they would be developed into the players they are now? It takes good ownership, great coaching, and the opportunity to learn and grow for rookies to blossom into all-stars and unfortunately we offer none of the above. – HawkEye

The problem with your argument, HawkEye, is that DWill and CP3 came into the league playing at an all star level. They weren’t developed by Utah and New Orleans. They were top 5 point guards the first moment they set foot on NBA hardwood. Instead of taking one of the two most highly-rated point guards in a generation when point guard was the Hawks’ most glaring need, they gambled everything on “potential” and picked Marvin. The need vs. potential argument has been solved for all time.

Here is my rebuilding plan for the Hawks. Fire Sund and LD immediately. Sund cannot be trusted to make another coaching hire, and LD obviously has to go. For the new GM, hire anyone on R.C. Buford’s staff. Then trade Joe to the Nets for draft picks. I know the Hawks have done horribly with draft picks but we’re going to bring in a GM with personnel evaluation talent. Joe’s contract has to go, though. He’s already fading badly in the first year of the contract, and $20m a season under a new collective bargaining agreement and a smaller cap is like a boat anchor.

Next, we trade Smoove. He will cost too much to resign and he and Horford have duplicate rolls. They’re both big men who are not bangers and who like to shoot jumpers. Horford is the better shooter and all star, so we build around him. Jamal is gone after this season, Hinrich is gone after next season, Teague is your point guard of the future under a new coach. Keep Damien. Trade Zaza and Marvin if you can find a taker.

Not Sund

Stretch, lay off the Sund now.

You get what you pay for, and sometimes you don’t. What I’m trying to say is, pay a legit coach, commit to him for some years and give him the security to develope players. Pro players will not play for interim (2 year contract) coaches.

Either the Spirit go all in and spend the doe or we Hawks fans are smucked!!

YO Daffy Duck. How is Joe overated when he has averaged 20,5,5 the last five years. The only other shooting guard to do that is Kobe. Also, Dwight doesnt have a ring either
