Atlanta Hawks: Video: Lakers jerseys and judging the Hawks

I talked Hawks this morning with CineSport’s Noah Coslov (and I assure my blog people I did not buy a Kobe jersey.)

get horford and josh on the block with their backs to the basket and get the ball down low. if there is nothing to be had down low then kick it out–gotta atleast make the effort. take care of the ball–way too many turnovers since the all star break. i love hinrich and the dealing of bibby–but with bibby for whatever reason–the hawks weren’t turning the ball over…gotta take care of it every possession.

i wonder how many hawks fans will be in chicago?????

What the Hawks need to focus on the remainder of the season is to get the ball down low for a high % shot, if the shot isnt there, fake up to draw fouls!! If we can put teams in early foul trouble, who knows how that could affect the outcome of the game for the Hawks. Other teams does this all the time. When KG and Big Baby from the Celtics have no shot IN THE PAINT, they don’t pass it back out, they fake up and draws the foul. When Tim Duncan has no shot while IN THE PAINT, he doesnt pass the ball out, he fakes up to draw the foul. When Pau Gasol has no shot while IN THE PAINT, he doesnt pass the ball back out, he fakes up to draw the foul…U get my point. I can understand if we are only ‘jump shooters’, that’s fine to a certain extent. If we arent hitting, go to plan B which is DRAW FOULS. Its not rocket science. The only thing hurting Miami is that they stop doing what got them the lead in the 1st place. 1st half, both LeBron and Wade draw fouls for easy points but goes away from that by 4th quarter to throw up jumpers..much what the Hawks are doing. Those things doesnt win ball games..just doesnt!!

MC – As far as I can tell you are 100% unbiased in your assessment of the Hawks. You are very fair. And i give you props for being able to criticize the home team when you feel it is necessary. You are by far the best sportswriter at AJC, and better than almost anyone I know on a national level also. Now don’t get the big head!!

Just trying to be honest however. Thanks for your honesty, objectiveness, and frankness concerning the Hawks. We may disagree some on what needs to be done to fix the Hawks etc., but you are a phenomenal sports reporter. I hope they keep letting you do it.

Somebody called LD Woody – lite. Funny.

Who would I keep for next season?
I think the only 2 players I know for sure I don’t want back is Josh Powell and Jamal. Jamal is just not jivin’ with LD’s offense, and he is no longer making up for his defensive liabilities with offense on most nights.

And Josh Powell because he’s just a terrible, terrible NBA basketball player. He’s not even big enough to be bruiser down low like Magliore and some of those playoff only beasts many teams have.

Marvin, ZaZa, and Josh, I would trade for the right price, but I just wouldn’t have a fire sale and have CFTSOC.

Etan – I don’t think he’s been given enough time on the court to show if he’s worth bringing back or not. I guess he truly is our 13th guy. But when he’s played, like at OKC or vs. the Magic, I thought he was effective.

Hilton – Same. I like the idea of having somebody with length off the bench you you face an Odom or Gasol. But I have no idea if he can contribute.

That means Al, JJ, Hinrich, Teague, Wilkens I would def. bring back. And maybe Collins. He’s not a bad 3rd C, especially if he trains like he did this past off season.

Sund or whoever takes his place is def. going to have to scour the FA, DLeague market this season. Maybe Sy or a couple of other 2nd picks may make the team and develop.

Whatever happened to Othello Hunter?

And I may be stupid, but I love the fist bump by Josh stuff. Younger fans like that as well. If we could fix Josh’s weakness, no reason he can’t be the fan favorite for the next 10 seasons here in ATL.

I’ll second what Steve said about MC. None of that homerism and “fluff” from him. Just the fact, stats, and rational opinions.

If the Hawks are going to continue to have Horford and Smith be on the perimeter and midrange on offense, I think Drew has to give Zaza a try at starting center. Somebody has to be an offensive rebounder when perimeter shots go up. It just can’t be one man on the boards, with 4 guys out on the perimeter. We need at least 2 on the boards.

As a Hawks season ticket holder, I was livid when I found out that the Team Gear Store would be selling Kobe jerseys at the game. I made a point of checking it out for myself (1-2 minutes before tipoff), and didn’t see the jerseys on display. I asked a group of employees if they decided not to sell the Kobe jerseys because of the Hawks fans’ reaction, and they told me *they all sold out*. I said something about that being totally messed up and the employees laughed.

Turns out I’m not laughing.

I go to about 12 Hawks games a year, and usually when I’m on the way out I stop in the Hawks souvenir store and buy something. I’m very irritated that the Hawks decided to sell Lakers and Kobe stuff in their store, and I won’t be buying anything else from their store. Take that, ASG! Or is it LSG (Lakers Spirit Group)?

To things to make this team legit is a better bench Keep HInrich and Sy though i think Sy could be a legit backup SF> We need a True legit SF and Center. Trade Josh if he doest start going in the post for a Center like andrew bogut or Andrew BYnum. Put Al at PF because he is better than Josh and get rid of Jamal and Marvin for a beast SF like Gallinari, or wilson Chandler or Ron artest or jeff green if he can play SF.

ASG – We like our Hawks, but you can’t get blown out in the playoffs in record proportions, not sign Shaq, hire a dud as a head coach, lose at home by 41 and 34 this year, get blown out at LA, excpect excitement in this city.

You were on the cusp of a Braves like thing going on, 53-29 3rd seed, but it’s been all downhill from there.

And I will repeat, you can’t lose to the Lakers by 14 at home, whom you have beaten 3 consecutive years in our place, and call it a good loss. That means we are regressing fast. This isn’t against the “improved” East. This is against a team, that as far as I can tell has only added Blake and Barnes since last season, and those guys had almost no effect on the outcome of the game. And wasn’t Barnes hurt for that 24 pt. debacle at LA?

ASG, put a winner on the Court that competes hard in the 2nd round of the playoffs or beyond for a couple of seasons, and I gurantee you sell out every home game. Guranteed. But not this stinky product.

Northcyde,

Since this blog has become excessively polluted with broken records who repeat they obnoxious mantras, I have been posting over here less and less.

I suggested starting Zaza as well on the other blog immediately after his very decent outing against the Lakers.

Zaza is very “minutes sensitive” and has to be kept motivated and the only way of extracting out of him production is to use him at least 20/25 minutes per game.

By starting him we could always see if he is having an “ON game” and ride his energy and rebounding, and on the contrary, if after 4 or 5 minutes he is showing his ugly head and is not active on the boards he would be the first guy to come out and keep out.

Thus way we would determine with a good degree of certainty when he would be able to help us.

Against the Laker, he of the 2inch vertical took it to the rack against the lakers’ big bodies whilst Al and Josh settled for jump shots. He was clearly ON that night and if he had started maybe we could have been better off the gate on defence and kept Bynum and Gasol cooler.

When jump shots are not falling, who would have been a decent option in the post? Shaq.

Who would have attracted more casual fans, more jersey sales and more media attention to the Hawks? Shaq.

Who would have helped change the culture on this team (either positive or negative, culture would have changed)? Shaq.

Our starting Center asked for reinforcement on the front line, and even Josh Smith said it would be good to have Shaq.

Boston is the #1 team in the East despite JO and Perkins being injured most of the year. Who was an important contributor? Shaq. Now imagine if the Hawks had Shaq, and Boston didn’t?

Who did Rick and the ASG get? Collins and Etan.

ASG and Rick missed the boat big time because they were worried about Shaq’s contract and PT demands, and how he would affect team chemistry.

But here we are in disarray anyways…

The Heat start Dampier and then bring in Z. Bynum is not factor in the game, and the Heat are doing well

I wonder if we would have started Collins, brought ZaZa in early, and also started Teague, since the Lakers can’t handle a quick PG, if we would have won?

From MC’s new article;

“I think we have been playing good. We just haven’t been able to pull some games out,” Horford said..

I disagree with Al. dont think the Hawks have been playing that well. They have had a few good stretches, but I dont think that equates to playing good.

AJ,

Although Shaq has been injured, we signed Collins and Etan. How many games (combined) have they played?

The late game line up with joe at point, marvin at big guard, josh at the 3, horford at the 4, with zaza or collins or hilton at center you have a team that can defend and big and tough, LD HAVE STARTED THINKING ON BEING A TOUGH TEAM.

1. No point guard can guard joe in the paint.
2. No small forward can guard josh in the paint.
3. Horford must play around the baskest help out on the boards.
4. Collins, Zaza, Hilton must play solid defense in the paint thats it.
5. Marvin speechless
that big line up you have mismatches at the 1, 3 to score easy late in the game, also this would stop all this jumpshot stuff.

How to beat the Lakers is to have a quick PG who penetrates past DFish, their version of Mike Bibby. Then you have bigs that take Bynum out of the game, and/or get he and Gasol in foul trouble by slashing to the basket.

And of course play great D.

So we went small with Horford up front, and slower with Hinrich at the Point.

And we had a 14 point home good loss as LD would put it.

SteveW

March 10th, 2011

I wonder how LD will hurt the team tomorrow night.

Good coaches put their team in a position to win. LD to often puts us in a position to lose with his lineups and rotations.

SteveW

And no Al, we haven’t been playing good lately. Good teams don’t lose 3 in a row at home by a combined 34 points like the Hawks have done.

And you also lost your last road game by double digits at Denver also.

We are 4-9 in our last 13 games.

That streak started with a historic 34 point loss to the Sixers at home, followed up by a good ol’ home loss to the Bobcats.

Are we delusional? Woody won 53 games, had a 3 seed, and went to the 2nd round 2 straight years and we fired him to get to the next level.

I didn’t know we meant the next level down. Stupid me.

Hard to pull games out when your losing by double digits. 6 of our last 9 losses have been by double digits. And we just missed double digits in two other losses, by 8 at Phoenix and 7 by OKC.

It’s not like we’re losing nail biters at the end on last second shots or anything.

Shaq has played 36 games.

Collins has appeared in 42 games, at 12.5mpg

Shaq 36 games at 20.7 mpg

Shaq has played alot more minutes than Collins this season. And I think it would help the team just seeing superman sitting on the bench over there.
