Hawks-Knicks game thread

Greetings, all

Ken Sugiura sitting in for MC. A couple notes from the pre-game.

Josh Smith will play on his right knee sprain with a brace. Coach Larry Drew said Smith decided he felt good enough to play at Saturday’s practice and then wanted to see how it would feel this morning. At the shootaround, Smith felt good enough to give it a shot.

Drew said he’d monitor Smith’s minutes and movement. Smith will start and defend Amar’e Stoudemire. Hawks will play the normal lineup.

2. Hawks dodge a bullet as guard Chauncey Billups (thigh), center Ronny Turiaf (knee) and guard Bill Walker (knee) will not play. Billups has missed the past two games with the injury. Jonesboro High grad Toney Douglas will start in Billups’ place.

With such a short bench, how the Knicks maintain their pace and effectiveness over the course of the game bears monitoring.

3. Drew said, not surprisingly, defense and physicality will be two big keys for the Hawks. Knicks are second in the league in scoring at 106.4 points per game. Hawks are 25th at 96.1

“We’re going to have to play, I told the guys this morning, with such physicality,” Drew said. “It’s got to be playoff intensity at the very beginning.”

Shot selection and not falling into the Knicks’ pace are other keys.

“If the shot is not there, we have to be organized and get into something,” Drew said.

Enjoy the game.

This will probably be one of those games where we settle for jumpshots, lose, and LD will talk about how we can’t settle for jumpshots.

He’ll wait til halftime to tell the guys to stop taking jumpshots, then they will take jumpshots in the 3rd

It’s seems kind of strange to me that Drew would choose to put an injured Josh Smith on Amare. It’s even stranger when you consider that Al has had more success guarding Amare than Josh has. At any rate, the Hawks should attack inside as much as possible tonight, since the Knicks are going to be very shorthanded on bigs tonight. We should let Al and Josh attack in the post as much as possible tonight against Amare and Jeffries. If Drew chooses to go perimeter-oriented with the attack tonight, I would be shocked.

We’ll get to see the point guard we should have drafted back in 2009, Toney Douglas.

These nationally-televised games always worry me. It just seems like the Hawks shrink in the spotlight sometimes. I hope that is not the case tonight. I’d love to see the Hawks dominate in this game and run the Knicks out of the gym.

Both teams have poor benches, so it’ll be a battle of the starters. How Smith plays will be a huge difference there

Toney Douglas is known for playing some suffocating defense, so on the offensive end, I wouldn’t expect to see a lot out of hinrich or even Jamal. However, Al, Josh, and Joe all have clear advantages in their matchups on the offensive end, and we should attack with them inside as much as possible.

I guess that means Jeffries is starting at center, if Smoove is matched up on Amare.

As weak as the Knicks are inside behind Amare, I would think attacking him and getting him into foul trouble would be a good idea. Unfortunately the Hawks suck at drawing fouls, so that’s probably not a strategy they will use.

Another good defensive game from Marvin and Damien would be nice, but defensively the bigger challenge is to make sure the Knicks’ shooters are not left open on the perimeter. I’d rather Melo drop 40 if it means the supporting cast gets zero.

Tough choice tonight — would I rather listen to Nique’s nimbers and heat checks or ESPN slobbing all over the Knicks’ collective knob?

Our best players intensity and focus simply is not close to the other top teams in the league.

That is the difference between us getting to the conference finals and beyond and yearly second rd exits

The Hawks are doing a terrible job of getting Al and Josh involved in the offense. I get really tired of having to point this out over and over. It’s an incredibly annoying trend. If this keeps up, we could get down by a lot early, and then Josh might start launching shots and losing focus.
