Atlanta Hawks at Nuggets: Pregame notes
8:35 pm February 28, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Denver–Some quick pregame notes . . .
- GM Rick Sund said the team is unlikely to add any of the waived vets. Doing so would push the team’s payroll over or near the luxury-tax line even when accounting for the prorating of minimum salaries. Under the CBA, the prorating also is affected by a myriad of factors including the record of the team that signs the player.
- If the Hawks do decide to add a vet they would likely be looking for a shooter.
- Sund also said that after not trading Jamal Crawford’s expiring contract the Hawks would attempt to re-sign him: “I’ve said from Day One I’m a big fan of Jamal. Once we figure out what the new [CBA] rules are we will do everything in our power to re-sign him.”
- Kirk Hinrich (calf) is a game-time decision. (UPDATE: Hinrich is out.) He shot baskets before the game but hit the trainer’s table before I could catch up with him. L.D. is starting Jeff Teague alongside J.J., Marvin, Josh and Al.
- Mike Bibby’s buyout was the buzz in Atlanta’s locker room before the game. Guys are surprised he gave up $6.2 million but glad for him if joining a winning situation is what he wants.
- L.D.said that after playing last night and arriving in Denver early this morning he wants the Hawks to slow the tempo tonight.

Hinrich is out, so big minutes for Teague (and unfortunately, probably big minutes for Jamal at point guard) are about to ensue.

Also, I hope “slowing the tempo” doesn’t result in Teague being passive or Joe/Jamal hogging the ball, as has been the Hawks’ M.O. in the past when the tempo slows down.

Whether or not the Hawks can win this game probably hinges a lot on Teague’s ability to play quality minutes without getting into foul trouble. That’s not going to be easy against one of the quicker point guard tandems in the league. The Hawks need Teague to step up big time if they want to win this one.

Regardless of the new CBA, can the Hawks afford to resign Jamal?

“UPDATE: Hinrich is out”
The Hawks may want to consider acquiring another backup PG as an insurance policy. Kirk could be injury prone which could be problematic approaching the playoff. What if Teague also gets injured in a game? That would be a serious blow. Would put us in a reactionary “old sh!t mode of operation. I know Sund said the finances discourage such a deal but since the Hawks are already in a short-sighted “win-now” mode, why stop now? We have chosen this path. We are now in too deep to be thinking frugally.

Moderate to Severe knee sprains are worse than some types of fractures. 6 weeks to heal a fracture and possibly 10-12 weeks on a weight-bearing, pivot joint like the knee. The most complicated joint in the entire body. The knee is simply amazing.

This man said, “This ASG of 8 Owners are not wealthy. They got a little scratch and many are born and bred into a level of rich. But, they purchased this team from “Hobby Lobby” and expected to make a ton of money. That didn’t work out so well. This ASG, the caller said is in way over their collective heads. And, are penny pinching misers at best.
The New Group, allegedly is Billionaire Wealthy and can spend some money, should we continue to have a soft-cap with luxury taxes under the New CBA. The New Group supposedly is very interested in all three properties: Hawks, Thrashers and Phillips Arena.

Isolation and lack of ball movement is costing us this game, and that is on L.D. There was no reason to go away from Horford, and there was no reason to force feed Joe. The Hawks should have just keep moving the ball the way they were doing in the third quarter. Sure, Marvin missed some shots, but he and Horford were getting good looks, and Horford was hitting lots of his shots.

LD needed defense so he leaves Jamaal in and subs Teague for Wilkens?
Josh is out and he never, ever even subs one of our bigs like Armstrong who is supposed to be a rebounder and decent shot blocker in at all?
And already Nique and crew act as though Hinrich not playing is part of the reason we’re not gonna win this game?
LD is starting to look a lot like woody yall..
No reason for us to just play7-8 guys tonite when we have bigs who would create a matchup problem for the nuggets..
Its frustrating to watch this team do as we all say they need to do and they win, then when we think we’re on our way,we go back into this “coach induced” funk..

Melvin, I don’t think L.D. planned to play Al that many minutes, but with Josh being unavailable he didn’t have that many options. Also, with Hinrich out and L.D. hating Teague, Joe got tons of minutes also.
By the way, this was another loss that we caused ourselves. I hate these types of losses due to the fact that we lost not because of what Denver did, but because of what we failed to do. The defense wasn’t that great and it cost us, but more than anything, the idiotic idea to degenerate the offense to isolation in the fourth quarter was the biggest issue we had. That’s once again on L.D. You can’t expect a guy who is probably exhausted (Joe) to make tough shot after tough shot when he is being doubled and forced into bad shots. Joe needs to pass the ball in those situations, and L.D. needs to stop force feeding him down the stretch. We should have moved the ball and gotten Al more involved. Al’s shots was dead on tonight, and in the fourth quarter he only had 1 field goal attempt. That’s unacceptable. If we would have moved the ball in the fourth quarter and got everyone involved and still lost, I’d be okay with that, but I’m not okay with games where we lose due to stupid decision making and bad coaching. That’s never acceptable.

Can SOMEONE,can ANYONE give a good reason as to why Marvin is starting and playing a ton of minutes. He is a number one DUD. He’s worse then I ever thought he could be and for 4 years I have been pulling for him but he definitely can’t shoot, dibble, drive to the basket, rebound or block shots. He is a waste of money. The rest of the “SOFTS” need to go also. Build around Al, Jamal and Jeff Teague. Let the rest of those losers go, they are almost sinful to watch. Zsa Zsa wants more playing time, I was fond of him one time also and to watch him now is sickening. Josh Powell looks lost in every aspect of the game. * Somewhat exp. – You may want to read !
MCL = ligament
[you cannot sprain a ligament]
MRI will tell if there is a tear.
He could possibly play the next game.
The amount of swelling and pain tolerance
will determine if he can play if there is no tear.
If it is merely a stretched / “strained” (t not p) or bruise
then refer to the previous sentence.
If a *tear then Josh + the team + the Physician will consult.
Most likely not a tear due to:
no hyperextension or lateral [ACL] damage.

A big reason for Al’s limited touches in the 4th quarter was that Teague is the only guard who consistently looks to set him up. Teague and Al have developed a nice chemistry with each other, but Teague still doesn’t fully understand when to shoot, when to drive, and when to pass. The more he plays with Joe and Jamal, hopefully the more he gets it.

I understand that on the play before, he got that offensive foul on him, but he still can’t be scared out there. He wanted nothing to do with that ball . . lol. Saw JJ 35 feet away from the basket, and threw that basketball like a split finger fastball.
