Atlanta Hawks at Nuggets: Pregame notes

Denver–Some quick pregame notes . . .

  • GM Rick Sund said the team is unlikely to add any of the waived vets. Doing so would push the team’s payroll over or near the luxury-tax line even when accounting for the prorating of minimum salaries. Under the CBA, the prorating also is affected by a myriad of factors including the record of the team that signs the player.
  • If the Hawks do decide to add a vet they would likely be looking for a shooter.
  • Sund also said that after not trading Jamal Crawford’s expiring contract the Hawks would attempt to re-sign him: “I’ve said from Day One I’m a big fan of Jamal. Once we figure out what the new [CBA] rules are we will do everything in our power to re-sign him.”
  • Kirk Hinrich (calf) is a game-time decision. (UPDATE: Hinrich is out.) He shot baskets before the game but hit the trainer’s table before I could catch up with him. L.D. is starting Jeff Teague alongside J.J., Marvin, Josh and Al.
  • Mike Bibby’s buyout was the buzz in Atlanta’s locker room before the game. Guys are surprised he gave up $6.2 million but glad for him if joining a winning situation is what he wants.
  • L.D.said that after playing last night and arriving in Denver early this morning he wants the Hawks to slow the tempo tonight.

Great move by Teague at the end of the clock to draw the foul. A lot of the more established Hawks could learn a thing or two from him about initiating contact to get to the foul line.

Wabe, you mean the same way McHale roots so hard for the Celtics? Or the same way Barkley thinks he knows everything that goes on in Phoenix?

All I can say is the running opportunities are there…nice to see them take advantage.

The replacement of Bibby with good defenders at the point makes the team so much less reliant on Smoove defensively, and that is a good thing.

This pace isnt the best for Teague, bu I guess its goodd because he has to learn to operate in the halfcourt.

I don’t think he really struggles Melvin, I think he takes too damn long and then ends up forcing it into a tight space or overthrows it.

Too many turnovers and too stagnant offense to close the half. Some, but not all, of that is on Teague, who didn’t play as well in those last 2 minutes on either end of the court as he did up until that point.

Believe it or not Teague actually leads the Hawks in minutes played in this game. Despite a subpar closing stretch, he is +5.

Thats the pace LD wants, I Just think Teague needs to call his own number a little more, put pressure on their bigs by slashing to the basket.

Not too shabby though.

Nobody seems to be having a ‘great’ game really, but we’re still up by a point.

IMO, too many jumpers in that first half. We need to get that ball down low more.

Hoping J.Smith is alright and good to go next half.

I would like to see Teague get a little more aggressive and attack the basket. Solid defense so far. I know Jamal can get hot at any moment but man his shot selection is flat out horrible at times.

Is Josh Smith dunk over Kenyon Martin not more impressive than Blake’s dunk over the car? Kenyon Martin sitting down in a chair is taller than the hood of a car, and he took off from right in front of the free throw line, while adding a windmill to it.

Is something wrong the the score keepers in Denver? Doesn’t it seem as if the Hawks had more than just four turnovers in first half? The Hawks are shooting 38% compared to Denver’s 44%, and they are still winning. That’s what defense does for you.

You know, drmaryb has to be intellectually stimulated or she get’s bored.

This blog is hands down the best out there.
Fantastic posters with some serious knowledge, perspective, basketball acumen, stats and facts.

Even the Trolle is not so bad, as long as he doesn’t run out of the meds. But, I really appreciate all the great and varied opinions.
It’s All Good! My Hawks have got to come out and play some defense and go inside a little more. Too bad Al can’t get his own shot in the post @ will. But, Al is an elite stretch 4/5 as Grand-Daddy would say.

Yeah, but Blake has the media hype machine behind him thanks to playing in LA.
