Portland–The trading deadline came and went and Zaza is still with the Hawks after the team tried to deal him.
Is he happy about that?
“I don’t know,” he said. “I will say, yeah, I am happy because to moving in the middle of the season, especially [from] a team like Atlanta Hawks, you never know where you are going to go. So, yeah, for now I am happy but in the bigger picture, on different team it might be a better situation where I am getting more playing time and being more involved.
“For now, I am happy. I am not even thinking about next summer [that] I might go somewhere else or something. I definitely want to enjoy this year and do my best for this team.”

Zaza in happier times.
Zaza said that before he got a DNP-CD against the Warriors last night. He didn’t play against the Suns, either, but that was because he was potentially going to be moved. That’s not the case anymore, yet he still sat while Josh Powell played 18 minutes in Oakland and even Hilton Armstrong made a cameo appearance.
What gives?
“Coach’s decision going forward,” L.D. said. “I’m looking for certain things out of our big guys. I need presence, I need physicality, I need rebounding, I need screens being set to open up our perimeters. Prior to last night’s game we had lost five out of six, and I wanted to make sort of a change to give us a different look and jump start us a little bit.
“Josh Powell came in and did a good job for us. He came in and got eight rebounds in 18 minutes. I am just looking at some different things especially because we had been struggling lately.”
So it seems Zaza is out of the regular rotation for now. And Drew said after looking at the video from Friday, there’s a “strong possibility that more changes could be coming.”
Will they be changes to the starting lineup or the rotation?
“Both,” L.D. said.
No doubt Zaza has had some poor games lately. But here’s the thing with him: Look at his game logs and he had some of his most efficient and productive nights when he played the most minutes. And the on-court, off-court stats show that Zaza has been an effective defender, especially when he plays alongside Al (and isn’t playing alongside Powell.)
It’s not just the numbers. When Zaza gets more minutes he just seems more into it.
“It’s obvious,” he said. “Especially the role I am in, to bring energy. I am role player bringing energy and effort off the bench. Not only just me, but I am talking about any role player to come off the bench and [it's difficult to] make a difference in five, six minutes right away. I have had the games played more than 20 minutes [and] this is where you see the efficiency and my effort and energy.
“Especially I don’t come to the game and [have] any plays–not complaining, just saying that’s my [role]. In my situation to play five or six minutes, you have a defensive slippage or teams make most of their shots and don’t give you a chance to get a defensive rebound. Or offensively you make a mistake. My time is going fast meanwhile and you don’t seem that efficient.”
Zaza said that since the season started he hasn’t really talked to L.D. about his playing time. He said when he met with Drew last summer the coach was aware of the similar frustrations he had under Woody. In the interests of being professional, Zaza said he’s not going to go into L.D.’s office and complain now.
“Bottom line is whenever I get a chance to get on the court I am trying to do my best and help the team,” he said.
L.D. said he knows Zaza tends to go in a funk when he doesn’t get regular minutes but it seems that’s not in the cards for the near future.
“I’ve been in this thing too long, and this is just not a time to be sensitive,” Drew said. “This is a results business. I am willing to give every guy an opportunity but we have got to come up with wins. And everything I do has got to give this ball club an opportunity to win.
“I wish I could play every player. I wish things worked out for every player. If we are struggling in areas I have got to do something about it. I made a decision last night to give Josh Powell a look. Not that I am giving up on Zaza; I am going to need Zaza. But right now this is a decision that I had to make.”
Practice report
The Hawks had a light practice session today at ClubSport, a palace of a gym outside Portland. Weird scene: Kids playing a league game on an 8-foot rim on one court, multimillionaires going through their paces on the next.
Some guys hit the weight room. Josh, Marvin and Jamal played a 3-point shooting game. Drew’s focus was running Hinrich and Armstrong through the offense. He said Hinrich might start against the Blazers because big Andre Miller isn’t a good matchup for Teague.
The expectation still is that Hinrich will eventually become the starter. But after Drew’s comments about lineup changes and his still-fluctuating rotation, I’m not sure what to think anymore. I guess we’ll see.
(Update: Teague will start again tonight. “Just as soon as Kirk gets more familiar with what we are doing he will move into the lineup,” Drew said. “Kirk is really picking stuff up faster than I thought he would, which is good.” Marcus Camby will start for the Blazers after missing 16 games following knee surgery.)
No more ‘Rook
One aspect of the trade I’ve overlooked is that Teague no longer has JC2 to lean on. Teague now is back to being the only young guy. It’s not the biggest deal, I know, but he still is just 22-years old.
“The first day it was tough,” Teague said. “I did everything with him, so he was like my best friend on the team. I know there is a business side of basketball and things happen and I’m glad he gets to go down there and play. I am still going to get to see him in the summer, so it’s all good.”
As for Jordan, Teague said: “At first he was a little hurt, I guess you can say. He knew the business of basketball and he knew the decision the team had to make. I think he is probably happy now. He actually got to suit up the other night.”
Crawford played tonight, too, and had a very good line.

Zaza is hogwash and LD is a horrible coach. LD changes his starting lineup too much and has yet to put his stamp on this team. He wavers too much and is a man of few convictions the worse type of guy to have running anything. Lastly, I see Hinrich has not been able to stop the horse play. Josh playing a 3 pt shooting game is always gonna be considered horseplay. Where is MASSA when you need him?

Northcyde – So every Coach in the history of basketball is equal. I get it. There has never been a Coach who has held a good player down, and when that player was finally given an opportunity, he seized it.
There has never been Coaches who played favorites, and played guys he shouldn’t have, and didn’t play guys he should have.
Northcyde – I’m baffled at your reasoning. Are you related to LD or something?
And why won’t your address Mo’ over Wilkens? Scared it won’t prove your point or something. Face it. LD was addicted to Bibby. Case closed. It’s not that Teague is DRose or something. But he should have been playing, and your not addressing key points made showing you these things:
-Why did LD play Mo’ for weeks on end instead of Wilkens?
-Why did LD play Bibby when Teague was a statistical upgrade in almost every statistical category – see Dec. for example
-Why were the Hawks losing by historic margins?
= Why is Teague suddenly blossoming, when he’s been this player all year long?
-What’s the deal man?
Tons of other stuff, but I’m way tired of this issue. Anyone with half a brain can see it. And you have way more than half a brain. You just want to fight your point I guess.
We know Bibby was the vet LD trusted. And he stunk most nights. Do the defensive stats show how many guys Bibb’s let by, and Josh or Al, or JJ or somebody bailed him out?
Have you been watching the games? Your smart. Guy it’s obvious. Defend LD all you want. Hope he turns into Phil Jackson Jr., but I doubt it.
Hope he wins 10 Championships for the Hawks. But your smarter than this.

“Talking about Blair, and Jamal, and Bowen.
They didn’t need a coach to define their game for them. ”
And you know this how? Jamal joined an isolation offense that catered perfectly to his skills and was the only guy that got extensive burn off the bench under Woody. Popovich is probably better than any coach in the league at defining roles for his players. How do you know that someone like Blair wouldn’t have also been buried by Woody/LD for, I don’t know, being too short or not having ACLs or something?

The thing is, I wouldn’t be saying jack sh-t if Teague had started the last two games and not played well. But the fact that he has played well, with the starters, against players who are pretty well reputed at the point guard position, tells me that he could have been doing more of this earlier if he had been given the opportunity.
As for his summer league performance, who really gives a sh-t. Derrick Caracter decisively outplayed DeMarcus Cousins in summer league, how’s that working out for him? I would hope that decisions on playing time are made based on more meaningful criteria.

NOT ONE YOUNG GUARD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN 7 YEARS, NO STAT CAN EXPLAIN THAT.
If you were trying LUCK would have given you one…..
The problem with the arguments defending Woody/LD, the excuses are EXACTLY the same and THEY HAVE NO TRACK RECORD OF DEVELOPING GUARDS….In 7 years they have not developed ONE.
We are not talking about Jerry Sloan, we are talking about Woody/LD….SHOW ME HOW MANY GUARDS THEY HAVE DEVELOPED…..

Because Marvin is a busted #2 Lottery pick..Why did the Hawks take so long to find that out????????? 6 plus yrs?????? Are You kidding me???????????
And at the same time Jordan Crawford was sitting there rotting away on L.D.’s stinking bench. Someone not named Woody or Woody lite decides to give him some PT and in a little over a quarter’s worth of minutes Crawford winds up scoring almost as many points as Joe Johnson has been averaging in 2011.
The same story with Jeff Teague. From at least the second half of last season Teague should have been out there. I remember from the first time that I saw him play that I was impressed with his hard-nosed defense. While it’s true that he was raw offensively, the fact that he played defense as well as anyone else out there on the floor should have bought him the minutes to allow him to start finding his game on the offensive side of the court.
There is no excuse for the current nor the former Hawks regimes to be so unconcerned, to the point of extreme neglect, for developing the young talent that the Hawks have had. With Woody, I got the distinct impression that he felt that he was coaching for his job security (which, as it turned out, he was) and was not going to take any chances with an untested rookie sinking his coaching ship. I’m not sure if that same reasoning comes into play with Larry Drew since he should be given at least a couple of seasons to prove himself. Whatever these coaches reasons for not developing these talented young guys, the Hawks as an organization are much worse off for it.

LD may not get that because he is not getting through to smolts. What’s interesting is that Hinrich was calling out the Wizards for lack of effort. He may end up doing the same for the Hawks and they may respond. If that happens watch for LD to jump in and take credit.

And Hilton Armstrong should be the first Big off the bench

Some players are better at certain roles, and it looks like ZaZa is better on a team where he can play 18-24 mpg consistently. This is not that team.
And this is one of Rick’s mistakes. He is not the HC, but as a GM you must be think about PT going forward. Did Rick think ZaZa wuld continue to get 18-22 mpg when he offered him $18 mil for 4 years?

O’Brien, the funny part about Zaza’s production in comparison to his minutes, is that doesn’t state how the team is doing when he’s in the game. Zaza could be going for 10 and 7, yet have a -12 in a game. Also, to me it seems the longer he’s out there the more passes he’s fumbling under the baskets. He’s averaging 3.7 rebounds in 14 minutes. That means he’s only getting one rebound out of ever 3-4 minutes he’s on the court. The NBA shot clock is 24 seconds long. So factoring in turnovers, Its safe to say a shot goes up every 20-30 seconds of game play. So our back up center, only gets one rebound out of the 12-15 possible rebounds per 4 minutes. That isn’t a good average for someone who isn’t asked to be a scorer, but just rebound and defend. And he’s asking for more playing time.

Man u guys on these blogs just spit out some of the dumbest things there are to many things to comment on but the most annoying one is Josh Smith, lets address Josh Smith, Josh is the best player on the team and L.D is finally starting to notice it. Yes he jacks up a lot of perimeter shots but if u actually look at the stats when he is hitting that shot they win the majority of the time and when he doesnt …. well he stops shooting …. he isnt a Carmelo type guy that is going to keep shooting if his shot isnt going down … and yes he does drive to the cup alot but the reason you dont notice it is because he passes the ball out to an open perimeter player. The only really bad move the hawks have made was the signing of Joe Johnson who isn’t even the 2nd best player on the team. The trade for Hinrick was unnessary because JT0 is the perfect point guard for a team jumps hooting starting line up …. L.D should have noticed that but he might have just feel in love with Bibby’s personality and 3point shot…. i honestly hope that they let Hinrich come off the bench just to give Teague a chance to show how he could be another Josh Smith just at the Point

Shake ups in the starting line up? What might that mean?
The expected starting line up: Hinrich Johnson Williams Smith Horford
A small but athletic lineup: Hinrich Teague Johnson Smith Horford
Or some version of the big lineup: Hinrich (or Teague?) Johnson Smith Horford Armstrong (or Collins?)
With a PG that can actually push the ball and control the tempo, I see no advantage in going with the big line up … unless Armstrong is better than we all expect (but I seriously doubt that).

Rookie coach = rookie mistakes – just like a rookie player. Management has to be willing to let them both learn on the fly. Not too concerned over losing JC2 even though he might be a decent player. He won’t be better than JJ, JC1 or Heinrich any time soon.
ZaZa needs to hit the court with attitude & hustle and he will get as many minutes as he can stand. After 25 years he might try to shoot the ball without dribbling first! If the guy would ever learn to play with the ball above his shoulders he would get serious minutes. Most of his mistakes come when he puts the ball on the floor.

Kirk will help folks like ZaZa, Al & Josh get the ball where and when they need it. His defense is obvious after only one game. I think he has a more of a leader/coach mentality than Bibby so Teague will only benefit. Hopefully they’ll split time till crunch time to allow Teague to develop.
What’s up with the crap substitutions for Armstrong? Why doesn’t anyone even mention his name? I’m not sure who’s in charge of all that, but way to make the guy feel welcome. We need his size. He’s quick, athletic and his back is against the wall. He might just surprise us. I feel like we could’ve welcomed him along with Kirk to show him respect. Well the fans are sick of Fing mediocre performance and mediocre coaching…it time to let some of these others guys get a chance to compete.

My 1st Post Trade Analysis:
(1) Initial Reaction = positive;
Mike Bibby in his day was an all-star caliber pg that did not age well.
*(Steve Nash / Jason kidd / Chauncey Billups et al) = aged well !
KH is one of those players who although not an all-star
is a leader, glue guy, warrior, hard nosed competitor which is just what
the Dr. ordered for the Hawks @ this point in time.
(2) Hilton Armstrong…..I’ve been calling for the Hawks [two yrs. now]
to find a long, rim defender to play the [5] position. A sidekick for Al & Josh.
I * Hope * young Mr Armstrong lives up to that descriptive need for our team.
(3) Now * If * Teaguer becomes a factor along with Hinrich & Jamal continues
to play well alonside better defenders @ the [1]…..this allows Joe to make a…
semi-perm move to the [3]. Presto, all of a sudden we have one of the quickest
defensive teams in the league. Sporting four guys who are supposed to be
pretty good defenders; KH, Joe Josh & Al. Throw in Teaguer @ the [1] & KH
@ the [2] and all of a sudden we are real quick.
*{{{which leads me to my next point}}}*
(4) Supposedly Boston traded Perkins because:
* Now Miami is the team to beat ( not ORL.)
So they felt having perimeter defenders were more important than
having beef to guard D.Howard.
Now KH can guard D.Wade while Joe could guard LbJ.
Or, Teaguer, KH can chase Jameer and Joe doesn’t to cover
for Bibby vs Orlando or any team with superquick pgs anymore.
*[match-ups]*…play-offs!
**final thoughts;
I like the trade, Armstrong is a keeper if he ***[plays hard]***.
We still need another rebounder as we are still small.
I also like Collins and Zaza v Big line-ups especially ORL.
But, they don’t rebound enough, Collins hardly at all.
What to do?
If ASG were commited to a winning culture;
they would make every effort to get Troy Murphy in here.
Get ‘er done!…Won’t happen.
Murphy could be a difference maker for us ““` truly.
As bad as we have looked for the last five games prior to GS,
we looked just the opposite [good] v GS.
Maybe the best that I can remember.
The motion offense was the best all year, crisp passing & cutting.
Joe didn’t kill the offense. Could Bibby have been the problem all along?
If so, Joe I’ll apologize at some point.
Go Hawks!

What’s sad to me about this is that this is the last day of February and we’re not sure who the Hawks’ starters are, what positions they play, who is in the rotation and how much they will play. There are four teams coming into Philips in the next week that can beat the Hawks at home (and I’ll be at all four games). Now is not the time to be juggling our lineup. All of this should have happened in November. I understand they made a trade, but still.
I also would like to hear what trade(s) the Hawks were pursuing with Zaza that didn’t pan out.

“When Josh or Al can command a double team, then you can say they have surpassed JJ. ”
Smoove gets doubled in the post a lot, and usually he uses the opportunity to dish the ball to the open guy. In fact on the offensive end this ability to pass out of the double team is his greatest asset. Whether he should be getting doubled so much is an entirely different question, one that other teams should answer, not the Hawks. But the fact of the matter is that he does.

As far as LD’s “lineup change” is concerned, assuming he’s not BSing us like he did last time he mentioned a lineup change, the most likely move to me seems like it would be starting Damien and bringing Marvin off the bench. Maybe he feels that Marvin plays more aggressively with the second unit.
I doubt that he is going to do anything drastic with the backcourt rotation. Hinrich was brought here to play the 1, and that is his best position. Teague has played well the last two games, but I’d be really surprised if that alone earned him the starting job going forward. Hopefully, though, his solid performances against the Suns and Warriors result in extra minutes for him. I do like the idea of occasionally using a small lineup of Teague/Kirk/Joe at the 1-2-3 depending on the matchup, but that shouldn’t be the starting lineup.

“it’s difficult to make a difference in five, six minutes right away. I have had the games played more than 20 minutes [and] this is where you see the efficiency and my effort and energy”
But Zaza, you are the 1st big off the bench. That’s considered privilege by role player standards. You average not five or six minutes but 14 minutes a game for the entire season. If your demotion was just about a PER number then you make a valid point since really there is a correlation between MP and PER. But this is not an analytical mathematical exercise because the PER measurement is obscure. Here’s the with problems With PER
“PER largely measures offensive performance. Hollinger freely admits that two of the defensive statistics it incorporates — blocks and steals — can produce a distorted picture of a player’s value and that PER is not a reliable measure of a player’s defensive acumen. For example, Bruce Bowen, widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the NBA (at least through the 2006-07 season), has routinely posted single-digit PERs.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_Efficiency_Rating
No stat number can replace what is actually happening out on the court. Jason Collins PER number is worse than Zaza and plays less minutes yet he’s more effective doing fewer things with his bigger body. As stated in a previous blog, when Zaza enters the game, we tend to lose leads more often than not. This is a result oriented business. It’s all about what have you done for me lately.
Zaza, you making excuses about PT is the wrong answer. Your argument is weak.

Smh @ Zaza. There are plenty of bench players around the league that make their presence known in 5 or 6 minutes. Those same players earn extended minutes from the coach because of that.
I don’t want to hear Zaa crying about playing time, when Dejuan Blair scored 6 points and pulled down 6 rebounds in 7 minutes . . in his very 1st regular season game as a rookie. He ended up with 14 pts and 11 rebs ( 5 offensive boards ) in his very first rookie game. A guy that proved his worth right off the bat in the NBA, and has consistently been able to do it.
If you could consistently produce, you would consistently play.
Instead, you have one of the worst shooting percentages for a center in the NBA. You constantly fumble passes. Your turnover rate has been fairly high your entire career. You don’t defensive rebound like you should. A lot of your offensive rebounds come off your own misses. And your defensive awareness is bad at times.
Of course you’re not going to get 20 minutes a game playing like that. You might even get a few DNPs.

lewis, I usually have very little disagreement with you. But in this instance, I want to suggest to you that if you say that someone “said something”, then either admit off the bat that it’s a paraphrase, or find the exact quote. To do otherwise is to confuse what Hinrich said. If someone who had NOT read the article (I had) about him mentoring Rose and Wall read your words they would assume that Hinrich said the words you put in his mouth (which was FAR less flattering then his actual words, therefore making him seem like a complainer, when he was merely answering a question honestly. He never gave any indication that he was “sick of coming off the bench” as you said he did.
Just a friendly suggestion for the betterment of the blog.

Teague is better than Hinrich defensively. Hinrich gives up just as much as he gets but he can hit shots, that is the great equalizer. Jamal is at the point because of Millers size but then we went small with Kirk and allowed us to have our scorers on the floor and a defensive presence at point . This will force teams to adjust to us .
But for this to work we are gonna need huge efforts energy wise from Josh and Josh its almost as if Bibby made them lazy and want to play halfcourt and now we are getting out running and its taking them a minute to adjust hence the sloppiness with the ball

Can’t believe no Teague…why? This game has been good so far, and I can’t believe the depth the Blazers have it’s absolutely crazy seeing G. Wallace and B. Roy on the bench 2 All-Star type players.
No ego’s in Portland thats for sure.
Teague better start the 2nd half and get a good amount of minutes LD don’t start letting us down after the GS game you bum…

Troy Murphy has been bought out and is going to Boston or Miami. I hope it’s Boston. Miami is beatable in large part because they have no quality players outside their big 2 and a half and Mike Miller. I’d rather they didn’t get a guy like Murphy who can crash the boards and stretch the floor all in one.

Its like the Hawks go into the NFL version of prevent defense on the offensive side in the 4th… Too much dribbling. no ball movement, and guys were careless with the ball. LD is an offensive style coach. He sticks with Jamal in the end because he beleives Jamal’s offensive game will beat any teams defense at any given time. However what the fans seem to notice….but somehow LD dosen’t, is that everytime Jamal is in at the end of games any lead we is lost. It might be true that Jamal had a key moment late in the game with that three, but if he was NOT in at the end of the game, chances are the situation we we’re put in at that moment would have never occured.
No matter how much we complain and how much we see the obvious blunder, LD is to scared to not let Jamal play. He might have gotten “big” with Zaza….but he is Jamals….female dog….

Great 3 quarters of defense tonight! This team looks completely different defensively with Jeff in the game or with Hinich. Even Jamal looks a lot different defensively. The 4th quarter was terrible but I think that was partly because of the big lead and Jamal and Hinich not playing well together. I don’t think LD did a good job of letting everyone know what their roles are on the team. Jamal should be the SG when Hinich’s on the floor, but it looks like he tring to play PG most of the time. Hopefully they can figure that relationship out pretty quickly. We haven’t seen this Zaza in a while, he was incredible on the boards, really the story of the game. LD really likes to end the game with Jamal on the floor which is fine but the team with Teague and Wilkins on the floor can really get after you. Nice to see some serious defensive, first time in a while

And if the Hinrich-Jamal backcourt is going to happen, Hinrich at least needs to be bringing the ball up and guarding the opponent’s best ball handler. Jamal should not have been bringing the ball up or guarding Andre Miller, and yet he was doing both in the 4th quarter today.

24 turnovers with that defense is fine with me,especially with a W,but the Hawks can’t afford it against teams that can take advantage of those mistakes..Hinrich not being acclimated is mostly the reason, but he will come around eventually and can we please get Hilton some burn.I think the guy can bring something to the table on both Offense and Defense..Zaza had some great effort tonight though with 6 offensive boards and 12 all together..

Is it me, or shouldn’t Teague continue starting for the time being? Especially against Lawson of Denver.. To me, the team would be better with Teague starting, and Hinrich coming off of the bench with JC1 and Zaza. I know Kirk doesn’t want that, but he would still end up getting more minutes. Teague’s mentality is totally different when he’s in the game with the starters compared to Zaza and crew. If Teague starts, you know what kind of production you’re going to get off of the bench in Kirk. If Kirk starts, you don’t know what’s going to come in the game in Teague’s performance. Its better to have insurance and reassurance on the bench ready to go.

Teague is our best perimeter defender by far. Andre Miller did not score a point on Teague even though he is our smallest guard. He got all of his points on Jamal and Hinrich. Bibby being forced on the Wizards is the best thing that could have happened to this team. One sign that there may be more changes going forward.
A terrific win last night when Portland had all the momentum with Wallace and Camby in uniform for them.
There is still work to be done on this team, but things look a lot better, even when we make multiple mistakes.
I can trash Larry on his decisions, especially his stubborness for leaving Teague to rot for 2/3 of the season. What I can’t complain about is the unselfishness and believe me, I am seeing unselfishness on this team like never before. That doesn’t mean I trust in Larry. He still has some proving to do as he obvioulsy coddles the core. Once he gets past that weakness and makes each player accountable, this team could be very good.
More could have been done to improve this team this offseason, so its hard for me to totally buy into the current roster. But I am seeing good things happen as well. Why not play Powell and Collins and Wilkins when Josh and Marvin and Zaza aren’t getting it done on some nights.
The Marvin minutes still continue to be high, but 11/7 in 28 minutes gives me hope he can do that more often and quit taking off games.
Teague and Hindrich will only be good for this team…I don’t see a negative with that combo.

We still aren’t playing a complete game. That 4th quarter comeback would have been expected at this point, but there was enough to hold them off.
Why do all of us want this team to play bad to get better? That’s the only reason we are making moves….not because we need to, but because Sund feels pressure to…he said so himself. He knows we can’t go far watching other teams continue to improve.
The way Bibby went out………same will have to happen to Marvin and Zaza to move forward. Mo being gone? Not a factor in the least.

The Hawks are a team of forwards…some good, some not so good. You’re right, in seven years the Hawks have not developed a point guard nor a shooting guard. They’ve drafted only a few, Jason Terry comes to mind, but by and large, it has been forwards. It think that’s all the GMs and Coaches (Knight and Drew) know.
