Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 95, Warriors 79

Joe and the Hawks were ripping and running in Oaktown. Anda Chu / Oakland Tribune

Oakland–The Hawks are something to watch when they defend, rebound and run the floor like this. Add in the kind of unselfish offense they played tonight, and they can look dang near unstoppable at times.

  • Of course no one is going to mistake the Warriors for a strong or even competent defensive team. But they are pretty good on offense and the Hawks made them look awful.
  • “I felt we really made an effort to contest and challenge every shot,” Al said. “Its’ a little frustrating for me because I wish we played like this all the time. I hope there is no looking back now. We saw how we can play so we have to be able to keep that up.”
  • Kirk Hinrich, pregame, on playing with little preparation on Hawks’ schemes: “It’s important that I understand what we are trying to do at both ends. But a lot of times our lineups and our athleticism, I think the best way for us to play is to just play. Work hard on the defensive end and try to run.”
  • And then the Hawks went out and played that way.
  • Their aggressive D, spearheaded by Teague, so flummoxed Stephen Curry that fans started screaming at him to shoot when he didn’t have a field-goal attempt in the first quarter. The truth is he couldn’t find much space with Atlanta’s athletic guys challenging, rotating, communicating and hustling.
  • Neither could Monta Ellis, who didn’t get going until the Hawks were in control.
  • “I thought Kirk came in and played some D on Monte and the D I played on him was pretty good,” J.J. said. “But also the help we got on him from other guys. That’s the main key, man. In order for us to be consistent, in order for us to be a good team, we have got to be able to do the small things and help is definitely one of them. Hopefully we can try to get on a nice little streak here.”
  • Hinrich looked pretty good considering he hasn’t yet had a real live practice with the Hawks. He used his size, long arms and positioning to harass Ellis and Curry. Offensively he seemed cognizant of quickly passing the ball ahead to Joe on the wing.
  • “I felt so-so,” Hinrich said. “I’m just trying to get familiar with everybody, the plays and all of that. It wasn’t too rough. The good thing is we did such a good job defensively we weren’t forced to run a lot of sets. We were able to get offense from our defense.”
  • Teague was a pest defensively. His soundness allowed his teammates to stay home more often and he seemed more aware. It’s probably no coincidence that he played 26 minutes and the Hawks weren’t scrambling as much tonight despite facing a pair of dynamic guards.
  • “He picked up the point guard full court and really had a big impact because he was able to get over screens,” Al said. “That’s something we struggled with in the past, our guards getting over screens. Hopefully he will keep that level of play up. I am sure his confidence will keep growing.”
  • Like he did at Phoenix, Teague got to the basket. It’s hard to keep him out of the lane. He was just 2 of 9 from the field because by my count he missed three runners but the attention he drew gave Al and Josh room for put backs.
  • Teague has looked noticeably more confident in the last two games.
  • “In this league, all you need is a chance, an opportunity,” Joe said. “He’s got that. He’s not going to have to worry about getting snatched out after making mistakes. I think we all understand he is a young player and he is going to make mistakes but now he can just play through them and just play freely. Obviously he’s got the talent. We’ve just got to put the ball in his hand and trust him.”
  • Drew, pregame, on Teague: “He has probably gotten down a little but but I really think the trade is going to do him some good. As I told him, I wasn’t giving up on him even after I made the trade. I still look at him as a guy that can help this ball club and under no circumstances have I given up on him.”
  • With Teague, Joe, and Hinrich doing good work on the perimeter, Josh and Al controlled the paint. They combined for 48 points (on 32 shots), 22 rebounds, 11 assists, two steals and three blocks with just three turnovers.
  • “Our scouting report was to force them to shoot jumpers and contest jumpers rather than kill us in the paint,” David Lee said.
  • The Hawks shot a lot of jump shots early but then started playing more inside-out. “I guess against that this team you have to give multiple efforts because you have to give so much help to the post,” Curry said.
  • You can tell Hinrich is happy to join a squad with a chance to go places. He said the Hawks have the making of a team that can be a real threat in the postseason.
  • “I think we could be,” Hinrich said. “If we defend and make that a trademark of ours, with the versatility of our lineups and our length we can be a very tough team to beat.”
  • Hinrich, pregame, on playing behind D-Rose in Chicago and John Wall in D.C.: “The mentoring thing, I wasn’t thrilled about it and I was still playing a lot of minutes. I was just trying to be a pro. They are young guys, good kids, and I appreciated my time with Derrick and John. They have great years ahead of them and I just tried to help them out and be a pro.”

Hilton armstrong should starte, now we have a big man in the middle that can move up and down the court with horford and josh this trade i give the hawks and FAT A, and much as i like hinrich trade for and depleted bibby who handicap this team at all walks of life, the hawks can now move horford 2 powerford, HILTON ARMSTRONG whom i like when he was with the hornets and for some strange reason have never had a fair chance can now make the hawks and sleeper in the east.

That Larry Drew requested the trade to acquire Hinrich sounds like a cover story to me. You need only look at the fact that Drew refused to play Teague sufficient minutes to work through his mistakes and kept Bibby on the floor despite not being able to guard anybody.

This trade was all Sund and was imposed on Drew. Having made it through the trading deadline, Teague now sees that he was more valuable to the organization than Bibby or Jordan Crawford, and he can now relax and play his game.

Look I’m not knocking Teague. In the three games I seen him start he has done a decent to good job with room to improve. I just think before handing him the keys to everything lets see if he can do it constant bases and improve while doing so. If not this year then next I can see him running the Hawks if he truly works at it. Also he need to improve that body language of his. It is not showing any confidence or readiness to play.

I can agree with Hinrich getting the starting job when he picks up the offense. But Teague has emphatically proven over the last two games that he can give the Hawks valuable minutes against other teams’ starters. At the very least, he needs to be an integral part of the rotation going forward. There is absolutely no excuse any longer to bury him on the bench the way he has been buried for the first year and a half of his career. Maybe he’s not ready to run this team, but he’s more than ready enough to provide 20 solid minutes of backup PG duty off the bench.

Don’t know if y’all saw Denver-Portland tonight (it was a great game, one of the best I’ve seen this season) but both of those teams are several steps ahead of Golden State, needless to say. Aldridge will be a handful for Smoove and Horford, and Roy looked like his knees were not bothering him. I’d like to see how well the Hawks can carry over tonight’s performance to the next two games. Tonight was promising, but let’s not crown their asses yet.

Teague should start at this point. The principle is not right to start Hinrich over Teague when he has not even been here a week. I think Hinrich should have to take the job just like Teague was told he would need to do. It makes it look like they will go with anyone other than him if they just throw Hinrich there when he has not earned it on this team. I can care less what he did in the past.

Drew is trying to act like he knows what he is doing with Teague. Teague would have never gotten a chance with Bibby. Teague had 6 assist and played fast with good defense. That if refreshing.

Yesterdays game highlighted a few positive things:

- 48 minutes at PG split between Hinrich and Teague = better D and better penetration
- No need for JC to ever play the point, just play him to his strengths at SG, as a pure shooter
- No need for a back court of Jamal and Teague at any time!
- Hinrich and Jamal off the bench together = stong reserve back court
- The better Jamal is playing at SG the less time Marvin gets as JJ moves to SF!

Lets hope LD can see all this!

Perhaps, the trade was a bit of addition by subtraction. The team seemed to play prettty focused in the early part of the season whenever they were missing key players due to injury. Now they must play without a few key players for the rest of the year. It’s no doubt that the team was sharp on the defensive end last night. Their stingy on the ball defense really set the table for a solid team defensive effort. It sure was pretty to watch. But only time will tell if they can keep this up over the longhaul.

Just from Hinrich’s first 4 minute stint on the court, I think he will be able to run the offense pretty soon. He played with hustle and spear headed some great stretches of ball movement. I think once he gets some practice time with the team, he will separate himself from Teague on the offensive end. But on the flip side, we will have to see how far Teague can take this opportunity and grow with more playing time. Not just that, I imagine Teague a lot just from having to play against Hinrich’s defense in practivce.

-Q: They were over-playing the passing lanes. Were there easy counters to that? Or were they just swarming?

-CURRY: Their defensive effort were pretty flawless tonight. They were in-sync with all their coverages. So it’s hard to find a spot to attack. We didn’t… I don’t think we adjusted to their switching until kind of late in the second quarter and by that time they were already in control of the game.

We’ll look at the film and kind of figure out if a team does that down the road how to adjust to that. But we didn’t see that in time to kind of stay in the game.

Right now Teague should be on the floor on a more consistant basis than Jamal. Jamal should come in to bail out the offense or to play only SG. Teague should get ALL of the minutes not played by Hinrich at PG.

How about Marvin’s stat line last night. 32 minutes 4 points 2 rebounds and 6 turnovers for the #2 pick in the draft. We know that he was drafted because BKnight was a moron, but why was he resigned for such a large number. JJ’s in the first year of a long max deal appears to have deminished skills. Now that teague is getting minutes, hopefully his game will come around. He still needs to develope a jumper but he is really sticky on defense. Heinrich looked good last night considering he hasnt practiced with the team.. its amazing how the pace quickens when you have a PG that can get in the lane and push the ball- good trade for us.
I would have liked to keep Crawford but like Grandpa said if he was that much of a talent he would hv forced his way on the court like AL did in 07-08…
Addition by subtraction….My god I couldnt watch Mo Evans or Bibby anymore,
Hilton Armstrong is a better player than ZAZA Flopski and Twin when he learns the Offense he should be starting.
Next order of bussiness get rid of Marvin Gaye Williams -for the love of god do it now -he is not helping us at all. he cant post up or score when we run plays for him -I saw him miss plenty makeable shots last night against a team allergic to defense. Wish we could shipped his azz for Moon-filler,Prince,b Rush…… hopefully we will find a taker this summer.

Malvin Williams needs to be traded to get a fresh start. The Hawks should trade him for a package of young players. Getting a “high” tier draft pick or a starter for him is out of the question. Bibby the BURDEN…

We all have a person in our life that doesn’t pull their weight(i.e, Co-worker or family member)so they become a drag on everyone. They may be a good person, but they are keeping you and others from your goals….That describes Bibby.

The Hawks had to work so hard to compensate for his weakness on defense, other parts of their game suffered. It is hard to be consistant defense when you have such a glaring weakness.

What we have seen over the past 2 games is a team that has had an enormous BURDEN lifted and they are playing with more engery and fire.

I blame the Bibby trade on LD. His stubborn insistance on not playing Teague forced Sund hand. One main reason LD was hired because he said he would develop Teague(He also promised more uptempo)(We are slower than last years team). Sund drafted Teague and believes he can play….So instead of firing LD and payind a new coach, he traded Bibby.

I wish Bibby well, but I don’t think he is an NBA quality players anymore.

Teague locked down Curry last night, a player many on here wanted the Hawks to trade for. Teague has to work on his offensive game but if he continues to play that type of defense and push the pace then LD cant keep him buried on the bench, at least i hope he doesn’t. LD still frustrates me though. Ellis was having his way against Jamal and it looked like he wasn’t going to pull Jamal. LD has to do a better job of taking guys out the game…What was so frustrating about the Bibby situation is that he would have so many games where he would only score 4 points a few dimes and play atrocious defense yet LD would play him 30 plus minutes. It was just no way Teague could have been any worse out there on the court. LD really has some baffling rotations. I don’t want to see the Teague/Jamal back court anymore. Teague plays better with the starters..

I truly hope the Hawks can find any type of deal for Marvin “Big Sorry” Williams. I don’t think I have ever been as frustrated with a Hawks player as I am with him.. He will have a stretch of games where you can see why scouts loved him then he has a stretch where he doesn’t even look like an NBA player. Dude is 6′9 with long azz arms but plays so small. We need a sf who can play solid defense, rebound, and knock down open shots consistently. Big Sorry just does not do this enough to help the team. Dude makes no impact on the game.

Mike Is Back,

Are you out there?

I was watching that young lady on the University of South Florida that played with your daughter in high school. She is a beast on the boards!

They said that she had 22 blocks in one game in high school. Wow.

The South Florida women stink this year. They have only one win. But with Akila being a freshman she will carry this team in the coming years.

SteveW . . . Teague wasn’t playing against “top fiight” PGs, if he was coming off the bench playing against the other teams 2nd unit PG.

While Drew may have lost confidence and patience with Teague, it was obvious that Teague wasn’t helping himself with the way he was playing either.

A guy like him should be trying to assert himself on that 2nd team, and playing all out. But he doesn’t do that, and he doesn’t take command of the unit. He’d rather defer to Jamal than actually run a play.

He’s more comfortable with the starters for some reason, but we need that comfort level when he’s on the floor with some of the reserves as well. It’s like with Zaza. He’s a much better looking player alongside Horford and Smith . . or back in the day with Smith and Marvin . . than he is with the 2nd unit PFs like Powell.

But a bench group MUST learn how to play with each other, to give the starters adequate rest. In Phoenix, it was their 2nd unit that killed us. And we’ve lost the bench battle way too often in the past 3 years.

If and when Teague goes back to the bench, he can’t go back into his tenative shell. He needs to bring that kind of defensive intensity and push the ball with the reserves, just like he does with the starters.

northcyde,

I agree. But my question is this, What if Teague goes back to the bench, and does not produce when he plays with the other reserves? Should LD bury him on the bench because he struggles coming off the bench?

Or should LD find minutes for him with the starters because he doesnt look as bad playing with them, they help to minimize his mistakes, it allows him to improve, and his confidence will grow?

That is what fans have been saying all along. When LD talked about changing things up, sure, Teague was not standing out coming off the bench. But in order to change things up, LD should have tried something different (one of which could have been to play Teague with the starters).

But game after game (especially recently) Bibby would get lit up on defense, struggle on offense, and still play 30 minutes, while Jamal was on/off again playing backup PG, and Teague would oly get sporadic minutes.

LD deserves as much of the blame as Teague for Teague not being further along (imo).

We all got happy last night….but like some on here were saying, it was Golden St. We’re gonna see what they’re really made of in these next few days.

Both Hinrich and Bibby push it better than Bibby and play better D so just not having Bibby will improve the team alone.

As for the game, Teague needs to work on his scoring when he gets into the paint. But at least he penetrates, gets to the foul line more than Bibby (5 FT in 2 games), and teamates have a chance to rebound his misses. Plus his defense is an upgrade over Bibby (when he plays with the starters).

“He picked up the point guard full court and really had a big impact because he was able to get over screens,” Al said. “That’s something we struggled with in the past, our guards getting over screens. Hopefully he will keep that level of play up. I am sure his confidence will keep growing.”.

But good team win last night. Unfortunately, JJ is still not JJ, Marvin is still Marvin, and Jamal is still jamal. But Josh and Al had very good games, and I think Hinrich will improve with more practice with the guys.

cp,

I propose we refer to Marvin from now on as “The Big Clumsy”. Clumsy is defined as awkward in movement or action, and that sounds like Marvin to a T.

“I would have liked to keep Crawford but like Grandpa said if he was that much of a talent he would hv forced his way on the court like AL did in 07-08…”

Al “forced his way onto the court” because the Hawks literally had no other options at his position. They were starting Zaza the previous season. The depth chart at SG this year in front of Jordan was much better.

With that said I’m not sweating the loss of Jordan. He’s a promising looking player, but undersized 2-guard is one of the most easily replaceable types of player there is.

The Truth

I am becoming convinced; now maybe the time for Teague to always start simply because he plays faster and brings more energy than even Hinrich. Perhaps the reason the Hawks struggle is due to them starting slow since the (Bibby style) slow tempo does not suit them compared to up tempo. This also maybe the reason why Josh initiates ill-advised fast breaks when Bibby started was to find his rhythms. Slowing the game down is appropriate with a lead in the 4th quarter where every possession is critical. But when the game starts in the 1st quarter, these players are usually cold and need to play faster to find their rhythms. If they’re off early, slowing the game down only makes it worse. We don’t have starters who regularly draw fouls to shoot free-thows when a jumpstart is needed. I noticed Hinrich didn’t penetrated either when he played so his style is still TBD as he’s getting acclimated. If you watched the Bulls, this has been their recipe for success. They play fast with Rose pushing the tempo and setting the table for his teammates. With Teague in the lineup lately the flow of the offense is better allowing his teammates to find their groove earlier. He actually complimenting the starters better with his quickness, pesky defense and eagerness to attack in the lane breaking down the opponent’s defense. These attributes make him unique for the Hawks. However, no player is perfect and Teague certainly has his share of challenges including his perimeter shooting. But that’s LD fault for not allowing Teague to play through his struggles to move his maturation process faster. These last 2 games have forced LD to trust Teague as a starter and he has delivered.

Hinrich is definitely an upgrade from Bibby but to what degree we shall see. He’s longer, more active with better vision and is a better passer. Defensively, there is no comparison as Hinrich is an upgrade. Offensively he’s more diverse than Bibby and maybe more consistent but the stats haven’t bared that out. Statistically, Bibby beats him shooting 3’s but that’s about it. Overall, I would describe him as a facilitating combo guard rather than a pure PG. As evidence from watching his handles, he seems prone to TO when he’s pressed. Nonetheless, being such a cerebral player makes him prime for holding leads in the 4th and closing out games.

So as a winning combination, the games should start with Teague and end with Captain Kirk.

Starters:

1-Hinrich
2-JJ
3-Smith
4-Horford
5-Hilton

Rotation:

Jamal,Teague,Marvin,Wilkins,& Zaza(to keep Marvin from going to 4,unless Smith is on the floor)

I look to the Hawks as a guilty pleasure or avoidance mechanism (escapism) to the reality of lies and double speak of politics. I didn’t not expect so much double speak and politicking from LD. He did not want to break up the bureaucracy of Bibby and the apparent silly lull he had over a maturing Hawks squad. A virtual ‘good ol boys network’ of Bibby, Zaza and Mo Evan was evident and it stunk up Phillips Arena and other arenas. Forget breaking up the core, LD refused to allow anyone to break into that TURRIBLE triumvirate that produced nothing but shame – no matter what positives they brought to the table. Recall LD saying before the All-Star break that his rotation was set for the 2nd half and playoffs; meaning Wilkins, Teague and JC2 would be regularly glued to the pine like resin to a baseball bat. Now he says that he has never given up on Teague. Please dude, save the booboo for your face because if Teague keeps it up and really develops into something nice – it’d be in spite of you, Drew.
He is a master of double speak but not one of player rotations and motivating influence to developing talents. Play the youngster!

While I feel bad for Mr. Bibby being disappointed about being traded?
He is not the first nor most iconic player in Atlanta, GA to have experienced such disrespect:

Nique’ didn’t know he was traded to The Clippers (the ultimate NBA’s graveyard), until he heard it on the radio. Meanwhile, Stan Kasten was headed to his house and met Nique in the driveway! It was an awful nite to remember in Hawksville!

Gerald Wallace didn’t know until his wife awakened him from a sleppy-time nap and they saw the ticker tape probably on ESPN.
So, rarely do The Owners (not loyal whatsoever) give their tradeable assets any heads up warnings!

mykhalc,

I think most fans appreciate what Bibby did for the Hawks when he was here. Like you said, he was very important in helping the Hawks make the playoffs 3 straight years. I also think Woody deserves a lot of credit for helping the Hawks to get to where they are.

But both Woody and Bibby had reached their peak, so it was time to go in a different direction.

SteveW

Northcyde – I disagree. There were many times that Bibby got in the game, was overmatched, so LD brought Teague to play against the other teams 1st teamer. Or like against the Rockets, against a very good backup and the 1st teamer. Your theory is just not true in many cases.

And Bibby was getting smoked by 2nd teamers also. See the Bucks among almost every team he played against.

I know you have wanted to protect LD for whatever reason. I’ve noticed it for months. And I was a big LD supported – big lineup, motion offense etc. But he just had a problem pulling Bibby for some reason. Who knows. Even when Bibby/Jamal wasn’t working, he wasn’t giving Teague a moment.

And with his refusal to play JC2 even a little bit in most games lets me know he has a problem. Sund saw it and that’s the reason Bibby had to be included in any trade or LD would have just deferred to him.

And if it was just Bibby/Teague, you may could make an arguement. But what about Mo’ over Wilkens? It was plain to anybody watching the games that LD, not Wilkens or Teague, was at fault for his abysmal rotations.

And I even said JT must be on drugs or something behind the scenes to not be playing ahead of Bibby. But when it spread to Mo’ over Wilkens. Then his refusal to play JC2 almost any in Jan. and Feb, I began to see a pattern. So we may have to agree to disagree on this one.

Teague showed me enough against Nash, Dragic, and Curry to say he belongs. He’s raw, but the kid has potential.

extracurricular “silliness” going on, on Company Time.

I recall an article or blog where, Mr. Woodson went ballistic at a team practice, because the kids were giggling and playing jokes, while coach was putting in his defense. To me, that shows immaturity and aloofness on the job and it’s past time this team moves beyond that low level of play.

Hopefully, the new PG will bring that serious element to:

Starting Hinrich against Andre Miller is not a bad idea. Miller is known for being able to post up, and he doesnt shoot alot of 3’s. Plus Portland has Roy who is a good ball handler as well. JJ and Hinrich could easily switch off as needed.

True, but for the same reasons you stated, Teague could fall short of being an All Star and still lift this team’s ceiling by a lot. Say he became a 15 point, 7 dime, 1.5 steal, 45% FG, 5 FTA with solid on ball defense type of player — that wouldn’t make him an All Star over anyone you mentioned, but it would blow the cover off this team’s ceiling in the playoffs. And I think as his jumper and ability to finish inside both improve those numbers are very attainable.

SteveW . . . there are just too many NBA related websites, specifically a site like http://www.popcornmachine.net that can pretty much debunk what you said about Teague.

You can go to that site, and pull up any Hawk game played this year, and look at the Game Flow. It’ll show you exactly when Teague came into the game, what he did stat wise ( on a per quarter basis ), what lineup he was in the game with, and what lineup he played against.

The dude simply wasn’t performing.

And the trend for the 2nd team in general ( including Jamal ), is that as soon as 2 or more of them are out on the floor, the Hawks lose momentum.

Teague has his chance now to prove himself. And if he starts from now on, he’ll REALLY be going up against the elite level PGs. So if he couldn’t handle them 3 months ago, what has changed all of a sudden?

- Is it the players he’s playing with, that can help erase some of his mistakes ( like they routinely did with Bibby )

- Is he giving much more effort right now?

- Is it the fact that we played Phoenix and Golden St, 2 running teams not known for defense?

Who knows.

But I do know this. The effort he’s given in these past 2 days, he has to continue to give . . even if he comes off the bench.

No excuses for the lack of effort. And ballers can play with just about anybody. If he can ball, I want to see it with him NOT deferring to Jamal on every possession, while coming with the same amount of defensive intensity.

With Ty Lawson, it doesn’t matter who he plays with.

It’s been plenty of games in which Teague has sleepwalked out on the court. That could be said about all of the Hawks actually. If the dude provided energy on a nightly basis, he’d be a regular in the lineup.

But it’s not just about providing energy, it’s proving to the coach that he can trust you. And the easiest way to gain trust, is to produce out on the court.

2 games doesn’t validate Teague as a player. What it does show, is that he does have the ability to affect a game . . if he plays at that same intensity every night.

Kirk is very underrated as a PG because he has never had a tall backcourt SG that can guard his man (so he had to exert so much energy to chase the oppossing taller/stronger SGs all the time, which affected his shhoting and box stats); also the Bulls front court players when he was PG were always the most offensively incompetent ones in the L.
I am glad to see the Hawks’ GM can see his value and thank for the Wiz’s GM for not wanting to waste Kirk’s prime. When he was with the Bulls, there were multiple contenders wanted to get him and willing to give Bulls a 1st round pick/expire contracts, but the Bulls GMs didn’t want to see him to be successful…that’s why they dumpped him to a bottom team even though they needed to throw in pick/cash. This leads to some mis-conception among fans (who judge players based on their stats) that Hinrich is no good.

There is no way Teague should start ahead of Hinrich if you want to win. Teague is not even half as good as Hinrich at this time. But I agree coach should give Teague some consistent playing time to develop him (15 min or so, depending on his performance).

Barring unexpected injury, I see the Hawks become the 4th seed and knock out the Magic in the first round; Kirk will destroy the Magic’s PGs J.N. and G.A. Kirk makes everyone better unlike the over-hyped Rose who mainly looks for his own shots and stats, so he can get to all-star and max contract.

If the Hawks can strengthen their bench (not worry about spending money) and hire a better coach (eg, Aldman, the Rockect HC or Nate, the Blazer’s HC; both should be available) in this off-season, the Hawks will have a chance to win the East next year.

Yea nortcyde jj had about a week & a half of good basketball tis season ,oh I forgot that he was hurt,oh is he still hurt, was he hurt the last 2 seasons in the playoffs, talk about playing slow, he slows the hawks down with all of his stupid dribbling & throwing the ball out to js at the 3 pt line with time running out,oh & this is how he gets most of his assists. What real chance did lt ever give jt a few min here & there with plenty of dnp

MC’s tweets;

Drew says “strong possibility” there will be changes to lineup/rotation. No specifics..

Drew has been saying that from before the All-Star game, so its falling on deaf ears. The only change I can think of is Hinrich starting over Teague, which I think is ok since we are playing Miller and Brandon Roy.

Drew on DNP for @zaza27 “Coach’s decision. . . . I wanted to give Josh Powell minutes to see how he would respond” .

Powell had 4 points, 8 rebounds and 3 turnovers in 18 minutes. I wonder if LD was satisfied with what he saw.

And why isnt Hinrich the starter?

Still learning plays. Drew says he will be eventually.

Teague is going to have to play the same way with the bench like he has played with the starters. Can he? Time will tell.

Teague has made a huge difference.
Northcyde, you are normally right on, but in this case, you sound like you are not watching the games. What good are stats off the sites if we all seen how Teague been treated all year. When every time he makes a mistake he is taken out. Bibby and JAmal make mistake after mistake and underperform, and are left in.

There is zero justification for how you are trying to justify not playing Teague by quoting stats from sites, without taking bigger picture of how Teague was treated all year by not being given quality opportunity time, even when he performed in games prior.

Free Agent Frenzy

In Thursday’s Pickup of the Day column that runs in the Season Pass, I listed about 50 potential fantasy free agents and assigned them all a grade. John Salmons got an A+, while Brandon Roy got an F. I thought about turning this Dose into this week’s Waiver Wired and doing a similar column, but then decided that was the lazy man’s way out. So here are my Grade A pickups, in order, followed by a look at last night’s action, and what we may see on Friday night. If you’re looking for some trade-by-trade analysis, I won’t be going there much, as Aaron Bruski has already got that covered here, and in great detail.

Chase Budinger G/F Rockets A+
Serge Ibaka F/C Thunder A+
Jason Thompson F/C Kings A
Ramon Sessions G Cavs A
Gerald Henderson G Bobcats A
Greg Monroe F/C Pistons A
Wilson Chandler G/F Nuggets A (maybe he was dropped in your league)
Willie Green G Hornets A
Tyler Hansbrough F Pacers A
Troy Murphy F/C ? A-
Kirk Hinrich G Hawks A-

Budinger is the new starting small forward for the Rockets (at least, I think he is) and appears to be challenged only by Terrence Williams, who Rick Adelman may or may not realize is on his team. He’s coming off a huge game and Shane Battier is now in Memphis, making life miserable for the owners of Tony Allen, and maybe Sam Young. Budinger has never lived up to the hype, and may not this time, but odds are he at least become relevant and consistent.

Ibaka is now the man at PF for OKC, Thompson will celebrate the loss of Carl Landry, Baron Davis may or may not play in Cleveland, meaning Sessions is still valuable, Henderson is going to start and get plenty of run for the Bobcats, Monroe is coming on, Chandler was great in his debut as sixth man for the Nuggets, Green is quietly tearing it up as a starter in New Orleans, Hansbrough might start after Josh McRoberts was almost traded yesterday, and Hinrich is the new starting point guard in Atlanta.

Murphy is an interesting option, as he prepares to be bought out by GSW, meaning he’ll soon be a free agent once he clears waivers. I would expect him to sign with another team in the next 10 days. The Celtics clearly feel like they must obtain his services and if he agrees, he could be their new starting center, replacing the dearly departed Kendrick Perkins. He’ll also listen to pitches from the Heat and Magic, and then make his decision.

If Murphy goes to Boston I think he becomes a must-own player, if he’s not too out of shape. However, something tells me that Miami is going to be tough for him to pass up, as this is a guy who has played in the league for 10 years and 639 games, and never been to the playoffs. If everyone and their mother says the Celtics can’t win it all without Perkins, then I bet Murphy knows it too. And it’s not like the guy is going to be looking to “get his numbers” after sitting on the couch eating ice cream all season. He’s going to want to win, and he’s going to want a ring. And when LeBron, D-Wade and Like A Bosh show up on his doorstep, it’s going to be very hard for him to say no. Yes, I think Boston might be the front-runner right now, but my money is on him joining the Heat in the next 10 days or so. And if he does, he might be worth having, but will not qualify as a must-own player.

Guys who took a hit yesterday include Nicolas Batum, Arron Afflalo, Raymond Felton, Ty Lawson, Jeff Green, DeAndre Jordan, Tony Allen, Sam Young (maybe), Kwame Brown and Mike Bibby, to name a few. None of these are guys, except for Kwame and Bibby, I’d automatically drop, as they’re simply too good to be thrown in the trash. But Batum is hurt by Gerald Wallace, Afflalo is hurt by Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari and J.R. Smith, Felton and Lawson are in a classic timeshare, Green could/should come off the bench in Boston, Chris Kaman is hurting Jordan, and Shane Battier is going to mess with Allen’s and Young’s minutes. If you’re wondering why Chandler’s a hot pickup and Afflalo’s a drop, it’s a good question. But if Chandler was dropped in your league, he should be owned. Afflalo is a guy I think you’re going to start seeing on waivers very soon, and I think he’s headed to being a 3-point specialist that will score 10 points a game. I seem to be in the minority there, or at least I was until we saw it come to fruition last night.

Other droppable players, in my mind, include Brandon Roy, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass, Vince Carter, Josh McRoberts and Andris Biedrins, to name a few

@ Oldtimer

It’s just that I refuse to succumb to some sort of conspiracy theory against Teague, like some of the others are doing.

I don’t focus on the 5 games he’s played well in, and ignore the other 35 in which he made little to no impact on the game whatsoever.

Teague was a set part of the rotation back in November. Back then, the bench played well for a while, but as the opponents got a little tougher, they eventually showed their true colors.

Keep in mind that this team started out 6 – 0. 9 games later, we were 8 – 7. Injuries were part of the reason for that. But the main reason was the lackluster play coming from the bench. A bench that included Jeff Teague.

This team started to stabilize in December, the minute Drew shortened the rotation, and stopped giving some of the reserves extended minutes. We even had to go out and get Damien Wilkins.

Then we really got on a roll when JJ came back early, and played lights out for us in January.

The whole song and dance about Teague not having a chance, is the same thing said about Salim . . Shelden . . Acie . . and now Jeff.

It just gets old. Players simply have to put up, or shut up.

The Hawks are not a developing team anymore. We’re a playoff level team. So if you’re ready to contribute, you’ll play. If not, then you’ll sit the bench.

If it took a Bibby trade to finally light a fire under Teague, then I’m all for him playing more. But I want him to play like he wants it, not like he deserves it.

That’s one of the issues I have with Marvin. Marvin thinks he deserves playing time, whether he earns it or not. Can’t play in the NBA with that mentality. A player will flat out TAKE your spot, if you’re not careful.
At some point, as a player, you simply have to go out there and play so well, that the coach HAS to play you.

I personally wouldn’t have had a problem if Teague would’ve played more the past few weeks, because Bibby was playing so bad. But I understand why Drew didn’t make the change. When push came to shove, he trusted Bibby and Jamal . . and he didn’t trust Teague one bit.

But, Bibby can still help a few contenders from a bench role. I would like to see Mike get a chance at a ring now. Why not?

Role players succeed when they have defined roles. DeJuan Blair’s role is rebounding and playing physical defense. Bruce Bowen’s role was playing lock down defense and hitting corner 3’s. Jamal Crawford’s role is instant offense. Big Baby Davis’s role is crashing the boards and playing physically under the basket. Damien Wilkins’ role is to play active defense. Serge Ibaka’s role is to play D and block shots. These players come into the game knowing exactly what is expected of them.

Teague’s role has been… what, exactly? Is he supposed to come in and run sets? Drive to the hoop? Push the ball in transition? Avoid turning the ball over? Should he focus on scoring? Passing? Neither? Giving it up and spotting up like Bibby? When has Woody or LD ever come out and said here’s your role, here’s what you have to focus on doing, and here are the minutes during which you will be doing it?

I’ll tell you when: two days ago, when LD said Teague should just come out and attack without worrying about screwing up. So often in Teague’s career, he has come in in attack mode, but it has resulted in a turnover or two and he would find himself getting a DNP the next game.

This team has had a long standing problem with defining roles for their players, and it has affected more players than just Teague (most notably Smoove). It started with BK’s vision of a team of interchangeable parts, and manifested itself further with Woody’s inability to get anything out of his bench and unwillingness to implement an offensive system. LD has improved the offense, and in some cases (like Jason Collins in particular) has done a better job of defining roles for his players, but it’s still baffling that he wasn’t able to define a role for Teague in light of the fact that until this trade, there was no semblance of perimeter defense at the point guard position for this team.

Gameflows and advanced stats are nice, but they tell you what happens, not why it’s happening. The assumption that Teague doesn’t make an impact because he’s not good doesn’t take into account the situation in which he’s been. Not trying to make him out to be some kind of star, but clearly he has enough skills to where he could have been contributing solid rotation minutes for this team long before the last couple of games.

“Bibby and JAmal make mistake after mistake and underperform, and are left in.”

Forget Bibby and Jamal; at least they hit open shots, and you can make the argument (although I’d disagree) that their shot making ability warranted keeping them on the floor. But LD has clearly proven in one other instance that he has no problem giving regular minutes to an unproductive, error prone, ineffective bench player — or else Zaza Pachulia would have been nailed to the bench long before two days ago. And Zaza isn’t like Teague where there’s no way of knowing what his ceiling is. I find it hard to buy this “if you can ball you can ball” argument when Collins has consistently outplayed Zaza all season and Zaza has received more minutes. It doesn’t have to be a conspiracy against Teague; it could just be sheer ineptitude on the part of LD.

Northcyde = “But it’s not just about providing energy, it’s proving to the coach that he can trust you. And the easiest way to gain trust, is to produce out on the court.”

That’s what you said. So Mo’ was producing more on court than Wilkens? Huh? Conspiracy theories on Teague? Huh? We’re talking about a pattern here, consisting of multiple players.

And playing time is earned by what is done on the court – supposed to be. So when Teague posts numbers in Dec. for 12.3 mpg that are extrapolated out exceed by a wide margin anything Bibby is doing he is taken out of the rotation. Huh? And this is supposed to be developing a player?

Northcyde – Those stats on Popcorn don’t deny my point, they prove it. I love most of what you say, but your just dead wrong about this.

And I can understand your cynicism. You’ve been thru Acie, Salim, Ivey, and you think Teague is just like them. Unless he get’s hurt, that will be shown to be incorrect. Sorry. Like I said, we’ll just agree to disagree. And I know numbers don’t make truth. But I think most people who follow the Hawks, MC included, have got a grasp on this point that you do not. Najeh,

Exactly. Can Mo Evans ball? Can ZaZa ball?

Some veterans struggle when they get sporadic minutes, much less a second year player who would be a senior in college right now, and only played sporadic minutes his rookie year. And he plays PG, arguably the hardest position to learn on the team.

Add to the fact that the SGs (JJ and Jamal) dominated the ball last year, and the HC (Woody) basically let them go ISO alot. Teague got pulled whenever he makes a mistake, but the veterans would get to do whatever they want sometimes.

But yet fans want to put all the blame on Teague for not taking charge when he goes into the game. I think he should be blamed. but the HC (both Woody and LD) should share the blame as well (imo).

And he trusted Mo’ instead of Wilkens also? Weird. And he trusted Mo’ and Bibby to get blown out by 41 to the Hornets and set records for ineptitude in the process, get blown out by the Sixers by 34 again at home. Get beat by the Lakers by 23, that could have been 50 if the Lakers would have wanted it, all in the space of 13 games.

Yea, Wilkens and Teague were alot worse than Mo’ and Bibby. See why he didn’t trust them. Yea, right. Get a grip. Your a good poster, just jaundiced about this for some reason

JC2 – DNP in 7 of 8 games in Feb. including the 24 pt. blowout to the Lakers. Only played in the 34 pt home demolition by the Sixers

In January JC2 only played 5 of 13 games, only playing more than 4 minutes once, that in the 41 pt home demolition by the Hornets.

In Dec. he only played once in 17 games, 8 minutes at Boston.

This is how we develop players.

San Antonio has the best record in the League. They still develop players. The Lakers have been developing players. The Celtics have been developing players. The Mavs and Magic are developing players.

I wonder why we can’t develop players since we are now an established playoff team?

This is in answer to a statement earlier, that we don’t need to develop players since we are an established team now. Paridigm doesn’t work with the best teams.

Also, I’m tired of hearing this comparison of Acie, Salim, Ivey, and Teague as if they are all the same player. The four players’ skill sets couldn’t possibly be more different. Salim — a one dimensional jump shooter who had horrible ball handling and passing skills that made it impossible for him to ever play point guard and rarely even ran the point in college — was handed 20 minutes per game as a rookie. Ivey — a zero dimensional combo guard who averaged under 10 ppg in college and was more off the radar than Pape Sy the year BK inexplicably used a 2nd round pick on him — got to start 66 games in his second season because Woody inexplicably fell in love with him, and did jack sh-t in those minutes. I was wrong about Acie, but Teague has shown more in his limited minutes than either one of those players showed the entire time they were here, and yet Teague can only dream of getting the kind of chances they got to prove himself.

Najeh . . you are way too smart of a basketball mind to believe that.

The players you listed showed from Day 1 that they could do those things. They didn’t need a coach to tell them to do those things . . they proved to the coach that they could do those things.

And here’s the kicker Najeh. They proved that they could do those things consistently . . and sometimes at a very high level. And because of that, the coach couldn’t keep them on the bench.

Did Woody have to tell Josh Smith to be a shotblocker and a great energy player?

Did Woody have to tell Josh Childress to play fast and be an above average offensive rebounder from the SF spot?

No.

And keep in mind that at one time, those players were role players too.

But nope. It’s always the big, bad, mean ol coach that prevents the players who don’t develop, to develop into something more. And not the major flaws of the player.

Teague could’ve impressed in Summer League. But he damn near got showed up by a D-Leaguer, and then was baffled as to why people were freaking out over “one bad game”.

People freaked out because he was the guy who was supposed to replace Bibby at the start of the season, or at least by Christmas ( let most fans tell it ). But he gets showed up by a no-name PG in summer league?

Don’t act like Drew didn’t give that kid opportunities to prove himself. We even brought in one of the most aggressive PGs of the last 20 years, to specifically work with him.

Talking about Blair, and Jamal, and Bowen.

They didn’t need a coach to define their game for them.

And you know what? Youi can add Flip Murray to that list too. Look at what he did as soon as he came to Atlanta.

- he took Acie’s minutes in about 2 weeks time

- he took some minutes and shots from both Marvin and Bibby as the season progressed

.- and he positioned himself to be on the floor at the end of games

Why?

Because he proved from DAY 1 that he was a baller ( until the playoffs ).

The reason why Teague gets lumped in with Acie and Salim, is because fans would rather blame the coach for giving them inconsistent minutes . . than to blame the inconsistent play of those players for the inconsistent minutes that they received.
