Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 95, Warriors 79

Joe and the Hawks were ripping and running in Oaktown. Anda Chu / Oakland Tribune

Oakland–The Hawks are something to watch when they defend, rebound and run the floor like this. Add in the kind of unselfish offense they played tonight, and they can look dang near unstoppable at times.

  • Of course no one is going to mistake the Warriors for a strong or even competent defensive team. But they are pretty good on offense and the Hawks made them look awful.
  • “I felt we really made an effort to contest and challenge every shot,” Al said. “Its’ a little frustrating for me because I wish we played like this all the time. I hope there is no looking back now. We saw how we can play so we have to be able to keep that up.”
  • Kirk Hinrich, pregame, on playing with little preparation on Hawks’ schemes: “It’s important that I understand what we are trying to do at both ends. But a lot of times our lineups and our athleticism, I think the best way for us to play is to just play. Work hard on the defensive end and try to run.”
  • And then the Hawks went out and played that way.
  • Their aggressive D, spearheaded by Teague, so flummoxed Stephen Curry that fans started screaming at him to shoot when he didn’t have a field-goal attempt in the first quarter. The truth is he couldn’t find much space with Atlanta’s athletic guys challenging, rotating, communicating and hustling.
  • Neither could Monta Ellis, who didn’t get going until the Hawks were in control.
  • “I thought Kirk came in and played some D on Monte and the D I played on him was pretty good,” J.J. said. “But also the help we got on him from other guys. That’s the main key, man. In order for us to be consistent, in order for us to be a good team, we have got to be able to do the small things and help is definitely one of them. Hopefully we can try to get on a nice little streak here.”
  • Hinrich looked pretty good considering he hasn’t yet had a real live practice with the Hawks. He used his size, long arms and positioning to harass Ellis and Curry. Offensively he seemed cognizant of quickly passing the ball ahead to Joe on the wing.
  • “I felt so-so,” Hinrich said. “I’m just trying to get familiar with everybody, the plays and all of that. It wasn’t too rough. The good thing is we did such a good job defensively we weren’t forced to run a lot of sets. We were able to get offense from our defense.”
  • Teague was a pest defensively. His soundness allowed his teammates to stay home more often and he seemed more aware. It’s probably no coincidence that he played 26 minutes and the Hawks weren’t scrambling as much tonight despite facing a pair of dynamic guards.
  • “He picked up the point guard full court and really had a big impact because he was able to get over screens,” Al said. “That’s something we struggled with in the past, our guards getting over screens. Hopefully he will keep that level of play up. I am sure his confidence will keep growing.”
  • Like he did at Phoenix, Teague got to the basket. It’s hard to keep him out of the lane. He was just 2 of 9 from the field because by my count he missed three runners but the attention he drew gave Al and Josh room for put backs.
  • Teague has looked noticeably more confident in the last two games.
  • “In this league, all you need is a chance, an opportunity,” Joe said. “He’s got that. He’s not going to have to worry about getting snatched out after making mistakes. I think we all understand he is a young player and he is going to make mistakes but now he can just play through them and just play freely. Obviously he’s got the talent. We’ve just got to put the ball in his hand and trust him.”
  • Drew, pregame, on Teague: “He has probably gotten down a little but but I really think the trade is going to do him some good. As I told him, I wasn’t giving up on him even after I made the trade. I still look at him as a guy that can help this ball club and under no circumstances have I given up on him.”
  • With Teague, Joe, and Hinrich doing good work on the perimeter, Josh and Al controlled the paint. They combined for 48 points (on 32 shots), 22 rebounds, 11 assists, two steals and three blocks with just three turnovers.
  • “Our scouting report was to force them to shoot jumpers and contest jumpers rather than kill us in the paint,” David Lee said.
  • The Hawks shot a lot of jump shots early but then started playing more inside-out. “I guess against that this team you have to give multiple efforts because you have to give so much help to the post,” Curry said.
  • You can tell Hinrich is happy to join a squad with a chance to go places. He said the Hawks have the making of a team that can be a real threat in the postseason.
  • “I think we could be,” Hinrich said. “If we defend and make that a trademark of ours, with the versatility of our lineups and our length we can be a very tough team to beat.”
  • Hinrich, pregame, on playing behind D-Rose in Chicago and John Wall in D.C.: “The mentoring thing, I wasn’t thrilled about it and I was still playing a lot of minutes. I was just trying to be a pro. They are young guys, good kids, and I appreciated my time with Derrick and John. They have great years ahead of them and I just tried to help them out and be a pro.”

love the way Hinrich pushes the pace, demands the ball, makes quick, sharp, crisps, passes, and, most of all, the way he plays D. The trade was a nice move.

Teague looked good, too. Get that kid some playing time!

Malvin Williams needs to be traded to get a fresh start. The Hawks should trade him for a package of young players. Getting a “high” tier draft pick or a starter for him is out of the question. In order to move Malvin, the Hawks may to have to eat some of his contract. He may never become the player th Hawks are looking for.

Of course JT had gotten down a little bit. He had a Coach that was trying to destroy him. LD, your son got down a little bit and got mad and left in a huff at UNC. Now he’s a laughingstock all over about his lack of class.

If I had a Coach deliberately not playing me, when I was clearly an upgrade over the person over him, for game on end. And I had kept a good attitude, worked hard, done what the Coach wanted, the guy above me stunk and yet all I got was DNP-Coaches Decision, Yea, I think I would be down a little bit also.

Probably more than a little bit. Way to go Teague!! Make it were he looks like even more of an idiot if he doesn’t play you man!

It’s so obvious…

Marvin did not look like an NBA player last night, not even a DLeaguer. It was bad. If GSW would trade us Amundson for Marvin straight up (I know we can’t now), I would take it.

Even LD’s weird lineup in the 4th, with Marvin at PF, about cost us the game. Ld’s rotations are sometimes weird. But in the 1st half, he was flawless.

And JT did just like Phoenix. He came out gangbusters in the 2nd half. Kid can play.

I and others have been trying to tell some of these blog folks Teague was an upgrade over Bibby def.

But LD’s been bringing him in against top flite PG’s, and after 4 minutes, before he can even get a read on them, he jerks him out after they’ve blown by him twice. A kid with Teague’s talent can adjust, but LD wasn’t giving him the time.

Trade will help JT, hope it helps LD

Bibby the BURDEN…

We all have a person in our life that doesn’t pull their weight(i.e, Co-worker or family member)so they become a drag on everyone. They may be a good person, but they are keeping you and others from your goals….That describes Bibby.

The Hawks had to work so hard to compensate for his weakness on defense, other parts of their game suffered. It is hard to be consistant defense when you have such a glaring weakness.

What we have seen over the past 2 games is a team that has had an enormous BURDEN lifted and they are playing with more engery and fire.

I blame the Bibby trade on LD. His stubborn insistance on not playing Teague forced Sund hand. One main reason LD was hired because he said he would develop Teague(He also promised more uptempo)(We are slower than last years team). Sund drafted Teague and believes he can play….So instead of firing LD and payind a new coach, he traded Bibby.

I wish Bibby well, but I don’t think he is an NBA quality players anymore.

Teague locked down Curry last night, a player many on here wanted the Hawks to trade for. Teague has to work on his offensive game but if he continues to play that type of defense and push the pace then LD cant keep him buried on the bench, at least i hope he doesn’t. Hinrich did a nice job of playing d and pushing the pace also… It was refreshing to see your pg’s play defense and play uptempo..

LD still frustrates me though. Ellis was having his way against Jamal and it looked like he wasn’t going to pull Jamal. LD has to do a better job of taking guys out the game…What was so frustrating about the Bibby situation is that he would have so many games where he would only score 4 points a few dimes and play atrocious defense yet LD would play him 30 plus minutes. It was just no way Teague could have been any worse out there on the court. LD really has some baffling rotations. I don’t want to see the Teague/Jamal back court anymore. Teague plays better with the starters..

I truly hope the Hawks can find any type of deal for Marvin “Big Sorry” Williams. I don’t think I have ever been as frustrated with a Hawks player as I am with him.. He will have a stretch of games where you can see why scouts loved him then he has a stretch where he doesn’t even look like an NBA player. Dude is 6′9 with long azz arms but plays so small. We need a sf who can play solid defense, rebound, and knock down open shots consistently. Big Sorry just does not do this enough to help the team. Dude makes no impact on the game.

SteveW . . . Teague wasn’t playing against “top fiight” PGs, if he was coming off the bench playing against the other teams 2nd unit PG.

While Drew may have lost confidence and patience with Teague, it was obvious that Teague wasn’t helping himself with the way he was playing either.

A guy like him should be trying to assert himself on that 2nd team, and playing all out. But he doesn’t do that, and he doesn’t take command of the unit. He’d rather defer to Jamal than actually run a play.

He’s more comfortable with the starters for some reason, but we need that comfort level when he’s on the floor with some of the reserves as well. It’s like with Zaza. He’s a much better looking player alongside Horford and Smith . . or back in the day with Smith and Marvin . . than he is with the 2nd unit PFs like Powell.

But a bench group MUST learn how to play with each other, to give the starters adequate rest. In Phoenix, it was their 2nd unit that killed us. And we’ve lost the bench battle way too often in the past 3 years.

If and when Teague goes back to the bench, he can’t go back into his tenative shell. He needs to bring that kind of defensive intensity and push the ball with the reserves, just like he does with the starters.

O'Brien

northcyde,

I agree. But my question is this, What if Teague goes back to the bench, and does not produce when he plays with the other reserves? Should LD bury him on the bench because he struggles coming off the bench?

Or should LD find minutes for him with the starters because he doesnt look as bad playing with them, they help to minimize his mistakes, it allows him to improve, and his confidence will grow?

That is what fans have been saying all along. When LD talked about changing things up, sure, Teague was not standing out coming off the bench. But in order to change things up, LD should have tried something different (one of which could have been to play Teague with the starters).

But game after game (especially recently) Bibby would get lit up on defense, struggle on offense, and still play 30 minutes, while Jamal was on/off again playing backup PG, and Teague would oly get sporadic minutes.

LD deserves as much of the blame as Teague for Teague not being further along (imo).

We all got happy last night….but like some on here were saying, it was Golden St. We’re gonna see what they’re really made of in these next few days.

Both Hinrich and Bibby push it better than Bibby and play better D so just not having Bibby will improve the team alone.

O'Brien

As for the game, Teague needs to work on his scoring when he gets into the paint. But at least he penetrates, gets to the foul line more than Bibby (5 FT in 2 games), and teamates have a chance to rebound his misses. Plus his defense is an upgrade over Bibby (when he plays with the starters).

“He picked up the point guard full court and really had a big impact because he was able to get over screens,” Al said. “That’s something we struggled with in the past, our guards getting over screens. Hopefully he will keep that level of play up. I am sure his confidence will keep growing.”.

But good team win last night. Unfortunately, JJ is still not JJ, Marvin is still Marvin, and Jamal is still jamal. But Josh and Al had very good games, and I think Hinrich will improve with more practice with the guys.

cp,

I propose we refer to Marvin from now on as “The Big Clumsy”. Clumsy is defined as awkward in movement or action, and that sounds like Marvin to a T.

“I would have liked to keep Crawford but like Grandpa said if he was that much of a talent he would hv forced his way on the court like AL did in 07-08…”

Al “forced his way onto the court” because the Hawks literally had no other options at his position. They were starting Zaza the previous season. The depth chart at SG this year in front of Jordan was much better.

With that said I’m not sweating the loss of Jordan. He’s a promising looking player, but undersized 2-guard is one of the most easily replaceable types of player there is.

The Truth

2:40 pm

I am becoming convinced; now maybe the time for Teague to always start simply because he plays faster and brings more energy than even Hinrich. Perhaps the reason the Hawks struggle is due to them starting slow since the (Bibby style) slow tempo does not suit them compared to up tempo. This also maybe the reason why Josh initiates ill-advised fast breaks when Bibby started was to find his rhythms. Slowing the game down is appropriate with a lead in the 4th quarter where every possession is critical. But when the game starts in the 1st quarter, these players are usually cold and need to play faster to find their rhythms. If they’re off early, slowing the game down only makes it worse. We don’t have starters who regularly draw fouls to shoot free-thows when a jumpstart is needed. I noticed Hinrich didn’t penetrated either when he played so his style is still TBD as he’s getting acclimated. If you watched the Bulls, this has been their recipe for success. They play fast with Rose pushing the tempo and setting the table for his teammates. With Teague in the lineup lately the flow of the offense is better allowing his teammates to find their groove earlier. He actually complimenting the starters better with his quickness, pesky defense and eagerness to attack in the lane breaking down the opponent’s defense. These attributes make him unique for the Hawks. However, no player is perfect and Teague certainly has his share of challenges including his perimeter shooting. But that’s LD fault for not allowing Teague to play through his struggles to move his maturation process faster. These last 2 games have forced LD to trust Teague as a starter and he has delivered.

Hinrich is definitely an upgrade from Bibby but to what degree we shall see. He’s longer, more active with better vision and is a better passer. Defensively, there is no comparison as Hinrich is an upgrade. Offensively he’s more diverse than Bibby and maybe more consistent but the stats haven’t bared that out. Statistically, Bibby beats him shooting 3’s but that’s about it. Overall, I would describe him as a facilitating combo guard rather than a pure PG. As evidence from watching his handles, he seems prone to TO when he’s pressed. Nonetheless, being such a cerebral player makes him prime for holding leads in the 4th and closing out games.

So as a winning combination, the games should start with Teague and end with Captain Kirk.

I look to the Hawks as a guilty pleasure or avoidance mechanism (escapism) to the reality of lies and double speak of politics. I didn’t not expect so much double speak and politicking from LD. He did not want to break up the bureaucracy of Bibby and the apparent silly lull he had over a maturing Hawks squad. A virtual ‘good ol boys network’ of Bibby, Zaza and Mo Evan was evident and it stunk up Phillips Arena and other arenas. Forget breaking up the core, LD refused to allow anyone to break into that TURRIBLE triumvirate that produced nothing but shame – no matter what positives they brought to the table. Recall LD saying before the All-Star break that his rotation was set for the 2nd half and playoffs; meaning Wilkins, Teague and JC2 would be regularly glued to the pine like resin to a baseball bat. Now he says that he has never given up on Teague. Please dude, save the booboo for your face because if Teague keeps it up and really develops into something nice – it’d be in spite of you, Drew.
He is a master of double speak but not one of player rotations and motivating influence to developing talents. Play the youngster!

Empty Feelings!

While I feel bad for Mr. Bibby being disappointed about being traded?
He is not the first nor most iconic player in Atlanta, GA to have experienced such disrespect:

Nique’ didn’t know he was traded to The Clippers (the ultimate NBA’s graveyard), until he heard it on the radio. Meanwhile, Stan Kasten was headed to his house and met Nique in the driveway! It was an awful nite to remember in Hawksville!

Gerald Wallace didn’t know until his wife awakened him from a sleppy-time nap and they saw the ticker tape probably on ESPN.
So, rarely do The Owners (not loyal whatsoever) give their tradeable assets any heads up warnings!

mykhalc,

I think most fans appreciate what Bibby did for the Hawks when he was here. Like you said, he was very important in helping the Hawks make the playoffs 3 straight years. I also think Woody deserves a lot of credit for helping the Hawks to get to where they are.

But both Woody and Bibby had reached their peak, so it was time to go in a different direction.

SteveW

Northcyde – I disagree. There were many times that Bibby got in the game, was overmatched, so LD brought Teague to play against the other teams 1st teamer. Or like against the Rockets, against a very good backup and the 1st teamer. Your theory is just not true in many cases.

And Bibby was getting smoked by 2nd teamers also. See the Bucks among almost every team he played against.

I know you have wanted to protect LD for whatever reason. I’ve noticed it for months. And I was a big LD supported – big lineup, motion offense etc. But he just had a problem pulling Bibby for some reason. Who knows. Even when Bibby/Jamal wasn’t working, he wasn’t giving Teague a moment.

And with his refusal to play JC2 even a little bit in most games lets me know he has a problem. Sund saw it and that’s the reason Bibby had to be included in any trade or LD would have just deferred to him.

And if it was just Bibby/Teague, you may could make an arguement. But what about Mo’ over Wilkens? It was plain to anybody watching the games that LD, not Wilkens or Teague, was at fault for his abysmal rotations.

And I even said JT must be on drugs or something behind the scenes to not be playing ahead of Bibby. But when it spread to Mo’ over Wilkens. Then his refusal to play JC2 almost any in Jan. and Feb, I began to see a pattern. So we may have to agree to disagree on this one.

Teague showed me enough against Nash, Dragic, and Curry to say he belongs. He’s raw, but the kid has potential.
