San Francisco–Caught up with the Hawks here this morning (tip: never, ever drive in this city) before heading to Oaktown. Here are some quick notes, followed by a Rick Sund Q and A,. . .
Now on to the interview with Sund:
Q. Before the deadline, you said you would only make trades that improve the team and wouldn’t make any lateral moves. In your view, how did this trade make the team better?
“Larry wanted to upgrade the point guard position, particularly defensively, and still try to be able to maintain the shooting that we had with Bibby’s presence out there. We looked at this deal and thought it made some sense. It was tough to let Jordan go in particular. I don’t mind so much the draft pick but we really like Jordan. He’s got a huge upside. It was difficult to get him minutes this year. He’s going to have a fine career. But at the end of the day, like with most teams in transition, you have got to give up a draft pick and/or young player to whet their appetite. So that’s what we did.”
Q. By trading Jordan and your first-round pick in 2011, does it signal a win-now approach as opposed to developing players for the future?
“We also have a pretty young team. We’ve got three starters that started opening night at 24. You still have Jeff in a backup capacity, where he should be a senior in college. He’s young. Then you’ve got a couple of players that are in their prime. Joe is in his prime, and so is Jamal and certainly Hinrich is in his prime. You look at the two teams in the championship last year in final game, of the 10 starters nine where in their 30s.”
Q. How much did uncertainty of labor situation affect your approach to making deals?
“Not a lot because nobody knows what the rules are going to be. To be very honest with you I was really surprised there were as many trades as there were. Somebody mentioned that since the season started there have been 24 trades of various sorts that you would consider semi-significant. You have the big trades like Carmelo; Deron was a huge trade. And there there were other semi-significant trades. That seems like a lot compared to other years. And I thought there wasn’t going to be a lot of trades.”
Q. Now that the smoke has cleared, how do you think your team stacks up in the East?
“We have to see it out. All year we have been basically playing for the fifth, fourth and third hole. And of those three teams, everybody goes through their highs and lows. We have had some highs–January in particular was a good month–and now we are in a slump. Miami had some slumps and then they went on a huge streak, and then they went back to a slump. Chicago seems to be like us last year. They are great at home and they are .500 on the road and so they are sort of where we were at this point last year going forward. You’ve got Boston who have an NBA championship and has three players who are headed to the Hall of Fame. Miami has got two players that have been battling for MVP of the league and three players who have made the All-Pro. Orlando has an MVP candidate this year in Dwight. And you have Chicago who has an MVP this year in Derrick Rose. And then you have Atlanta that has two players that made the All-Star team. I thought it was ironic in LA they interviewed Kobe and he said, ‘Well, I feel like I am playing Boston, Miami and Atlanta [because nine East All-Stars are from those teams]. Also the Knicks are going to be no picnic if you have to play them and Philly can surprise you. It’s up to the players now, I think, on all of the teams. March and April are the home stretch and it’s up to the players and how they are going to respond to it and how they are going to respond in the playoffs. It’s a challenge for us, certainly. It’s as challenge and an opportunity at the same time.”
Deep thoughts
At last check, the (completely unscientific) blog poll asking whether this trade was good or bad for the Hawks was running about 50-50. I haven’t looked at all of your 1,600 or so comments from the last couple of days (thanks much for reading, blog people) but I think I can take a decent stab at the reasoning of the differing perspectives.
I’m guessing most in the “good” camp like the trade because they think the team is better now. Hinrich is a better player than Bibby. He’s a better defender, comparable shooter and should be able to diversify the offense by running pick-and-rolls. JC2 could become a good player but he’s not part of the plans now so off he goes.
I’m guessing most of those in the “bad” camp don’t like the trade because, even if it makes the team better now, it doesn’t improve the Hawks enough to give them a good chance at beating the elite teams in the playoffs. So why make a deal like this while sending away a young player and a pick, sacrificing the future while doubling down on this “core” group that may not take the Hawks where they want to go?
I think the views in both camps are reasonable. I also know that we can’t see the future. The Hawks should be better with Hinrich instead of Bibby, both from tangible and intangible standpoints. I understand if you don’t believe they will be good enough, but let’s see what happens.
Sund said declined to comment on trade scenarios that didn’t happen, including whether he tried to get in on any of the major deals by dangling any players from Atlanta’s “core” group. From what I’m hearing the Hawks did try to get in on some of those discussions but didn’t get very far.
If you are upset the Hawks couldn’t make a splashier deal then realize it takes assets like expiring contracts, productive players with reasonable contracts, young players with potential and draft picks. The Hawks don’t have much of any of those because of decisions made in the past, so those should be the focus of your ire if you don’t like this trade. I can’t speak accurately on what deals they may or may not have offered (or turned down) for their “core” players so it’s hard to evaluate those hypothetical scenarios.
In any event, the Hawks have 25 games against a tough schedule to figure out what they are about. From my perspective, at least, it should be interesting.

I like the trade but its time to start expecting something from our investment in Al,Josh and Joe .
Al and Josh are no longer nba puppies . Al is the youngest of the bunch and he has over 280 games and 29 playoff games . Its time for the excuse making to stop and for these guys to setup or be moved.
Im hoping that the addition of Hinrich means that the front office is ready to start evaluating these guys on there commitment to winning titles and there ability to help us move toward that goal.
I like our chances in the east if we can avoid the Bulls until the conference finals as they seem to me to have the hungriest team in the east .
Right now we are not even in position to have homecourt in the first rd so we need to get serious and start stringing together some wins .
I like our matchup with Mia but we will need homecourt to beat the Magic in the first rd
Our ideal path imo is
first rd Orl
second rd Mia
conference finals Bulls or Bos

I’m in the good trade camp for now, but bad for later. I hate to give up JC2. He’s going to be good. But we were a sinking ship. Losing 5 of 6. Had to get Bibby off the court.
But I like Mike Bibby, but his days as a starter were done. He should have been playing no more than 5-7 minute stretches in relief. And I believe Jamal may benefit also. They all will, because Hinrich is a PG who had been playing SG. He’ll help as a facilitator on O and a terror on D. The guy is good on D.
And he will give Teague more of an edge practicing against him everyday.

LOL so basically Sund is saying we have no shot at competing. Because earlier in the paragraph he said we are a very young team.

Hinrich knows DRose, so that helps. Hinrich plays DWade as well as anybody, so that helps.
His role model is Paul Pressey, so that helps. He’s compared to Jeff Hornacek, so that helps.
His dad was a Coach, so that helps. He’s been to the final 4 and the NBA playoffs a ton, so that helps.

JeJe,
LD isn’t a great coach. Pretty simple. He is good at certain things but has failed to achieve the type of “balance” Woodson did when we were beating good teams and winning at home. He’s way too focused on the offense and Jamal was hot. LD is a sucker for that once in every 5 games Jamal gets really hot.

Man I’m pumped. We finally have 2 PG’s that can actually play a little in a long time. Bibby could play here for awhile, but he was just 1. I think we have 2 halfway decent PG’s now.
And I do think we can win a 7 game series with Orlando now. I think Kirk tips the edge to us just a little bit.
And playing such a brutal schedule the last 25 should toughen us up for the playoffs.
P.S. In an article on the toughest guys from each team, it said Al was one of the strongest guys in the NBA. Interesting

The flip side is that Larry Brown holds down his point guards’ numbers a lot. Felton’s actual value probably lies somewhere in between what he did in Charlotte and what he did in NYC.

Rarely do I agree with Sund, but here I somewhat do: That is partially “The Truth”
It is up to the players now as to how they will respond going into the playoff, but the coach will also play a role as well. Game planning and preparation are also very important. After the all-star break, the Hawks have not matched the intensity playing against their opponents. LD certainly talks about playing games in a playoff mode 2 losses ago but apparently that has not translated on the court. When will the players take him serious? Joe seems to be still recovering from the all-star parties in LA. Must have been one “helluva” bash if its taking this long.

“If you are upset the Hawks couldn’t make a splashier deal then realize it takes assets like expiring contracts, productive players with reasonable contracts, young players with potential and draft picks. ”
The Hawks do have one gigantic expiring contract in Jamal Crawford, and I spent way more time than a mentally healthy person should on the last blog coming up with reasonable trade scenarios involving his expiring deal that would have strengthened the Hawks’ depth while reasonably compensating for the absence of Jamal’s scoring off the bench. Every single scenario I came up with involved the Hawks taking back expiring contracts. It’s not like the Hawks couldn’t have bolstered their depth while maintaining financial flexibility going forward.
MC, I know you say Sund didn’t want to discuss trades that didn’t happen, but I wish you would have asked him whether he views Jamal as part of the “core group”. If nothing else it would provide a little insight on what the Hawks’ plans are regarding him this offseason.

Yeah, one thing I like about this trade is hopefully this isn’t the Hawks giving up on Teague, hopefully it’s just an acknowledgement that Bibby’s no longer capable of starting and Teague isn’t yet ready to be the starter. Expecting Teague to take over this year after getting virtually no PT last year was probably a little ambitious. Hopefully, he can get good minutes backing up Hinrich for the next season +, then be ready to take over once Hinrich’s contract expires (or if we decide to trade his expiring contract at the deadline next year).

Co-sign on your comments about JC. Without knowing what the next CBA is going to look like, there’s no knowing what the financial situation will be next season. However, looking at the contracts we already have committed for next season, it doesn’t look like we can re-sign JC or sign anyone else of consequence without going into the luxury tax. If the Hawks aren’t willing to pay the tax and don’t make some significant trades, this team could be Hinrich, JJ, Teague, Josh, Al and a lot of filler (as much as I like Z, he’s been filler the past year +). And you’re not going to get to the conference finals without some quality depth.

As for Hilton Armstrong, here’s how he stacks up compared to Zaza:
TS%: Hilton 51.9%, Zaza 52.5% (Zaza gets to the line a lot more)
eFG%: Hilton 49.2%, Zaza 41.8%
Offensive rebound %: Hilton 10.6%, Zaza 11.1% (a difference that very easily might be a result of Zaza rebounding his own misses)
Defensive rebound %: Hilton 21.6%, Zaza 19.9%
Total rebound %: Hilton 15.9%, Zaza 15.6%
Block %: Hilton 3.0%, Zaza 1.4%
Turnover %: Hilton 25.2%, Zaza 18.9% (that’s a major red flag)
Usage: Hilton 10.7%, Zaza 15.5%
PER: Hilton 8.6, Zaza 10.6
Per-36 minute averages: Hilton 6.7 pts, 5.6 FGA, 10 boards (3.4 offensive), 48.4% shooting, 2 FTA, 60.9% FTs, 1.3 stl, 1.4 blk
Zaza 10 pts, 7.1 FGA, 9.4 boards (3.4 offensive), 41.8% shooting, 5.6 FTA, 73.3% FTs, 0.8 stl, 0.6 blk
Long story short, Hilton is probably just as bad offensively as Zaza, but he’s as good of a rebounder and a better shot blocker and is probably less likely to take shots outside of his comfort zone. I hope he gets a legitimate shot to take Zaza’s spot in the rotation. And who knows how well he plays position defense, but if he can approach Collins’ effectiveness there, it would give the Hawks a better option against the Dwight Howards of the league since Hilton blocks shots and rebounds at a higher rate than Collins.

I’m hoping they don’t have a luxury tax in the new CBA. If David Stern gets the hard cap he supposedly wants, they probably won’t. I personally think the luxury tax does more to increase parity than it does to decrease it. Maybe the owners will come to the same conclusion.

Najeh – Co-sign bigtime about Larry Brown and PG’s, and Felton.
The one thing Armstrong does not have in guarding Dwight, is about 20 lbs. Collins is a big body on Dwight. And so is ZaZa. Good to hear Sund was at least trying to trade ZaZa
I would rather have Solo than Armstrong. But I think the culture of this team just shifted from having alot of fun, to having fun and winning. Captain Kirk will team with Al and JJ, and focus on winning.
And Al may be able to help Armstrong.
And I think Josh will respect Kirk. They may tangle a little like Woody and Josh, but at the end of the day, one of the smartest PG’s in the League is not going to give the ball to Josh in certain spots.

Najeh – Stern is talking about at least a transitional luxury tax, with hard cap. It will take teams like LA, who will owe Kobe 30 mill. in a couple of years, a few years to get below the hard cap. So those teams will most likely still be in the tax, and have to decrease salaries a certain % each year.
And Arenas will be making like 21 mill in 3 years. Terrible to take on that contract with a hard cap. Not like JJ who is at least still productive.
And expect JJ to have a big game tonight. Ellis can’t stop him.

When you look at some of the deals that went down, you have to ask yourself if we couldn’t have gotten someone ( or mutiple significant people ) . . . if we’d dangled Jamal’s expiring contract at people.
Maybe Jamal + Marvin + Jordan + a 1st round pick gets us a decent shot at a Deron Williams + another Utah player . . or Miller and Camby.
Sund/ASG did a minimum type deal, in my opinion. Every contending team in the East understood since the summer, that this was a NUCLEAR ARMS RACE . . except the Hawks.
Everybody else keeps adding cruise missiles and stealth bombers, while the Hawks add tanks and propellor planes that shoot 50 cal bullets.

I voted good from an absolute perspective; the trade makes the Hawks better now and didn’t give up any assets that I thought would help the Hawks in the near future. I have my doubts as to whether Jordan would have ever found a consistent role on this team, particularly if Jamal is re-signed (as Gearon apparently wants). And as we all know, Sund is horrible at drafting. But there’s no doubt that Hinrich pales in comparison to players like Deron Williams (who I don’t think the Hawks would have been able to acquire unless they traded Horford) or Devin Harris (who I think the Hawks could have very possibly acquired using Jamal’s contract if they threw in multiple draft picks). He’s a good fit for this team, but he’s not the game changer at the point guard position the Hawks need to bump their ceiling up by a playoff round or two.

That’s interesting to hear, since they didn’t seem to have any interest in doing it this past offseason. My bad . . the Hawks retained JJ and re-upped with Horford before he could reach market. That is “adding nukes” in Sund’s/ASG’s eyes. But all that really did is insure that we don’t slip below a playoff level team. Those moves don’t make this current team more dangerous.
It’s like all of the people dogging Boston for trading Kendrick Perkins, like they can’t win without him or something. It was a good trade for both teams, because OKC needed more size, and Boston could use another versatile wing player to back up Pierce and even possibly Allen and Garnett ( if they play real small ). He essentially becomes their co-6th man off the bench ad gives them more offensive firepower.
As far as Hilton Armstrong goes, no way can I champion a guy like that, when he can’t even get significant time on a frontline like the Wiz, who could use help in that area.
Best case scenario is for both Hinrich ( perimeter defense on PGs ) and Armstrong ( rebounding ) to do what they do best. But we still have major depth issues, inconsistent player issues, and leadership issues.
We’ll see if Hinrich can stabilize things in the short term. That’s all we really can hope for right now. Deal with the playoffs when it gets here.

Hopefully Teague has another solid game. If he is playing well LD should stick with him but with LD you never know. Marvin was terrible the other night and still almost played 30 minutes. LD has to stop sticking with guys who are not contributing on the floor. I think it was a solid trade. Bibby was just killing the team defensively. Guys had to cover their man and his because he couldn’t keep anyone in front of him. When I saw Fisher blowing past Bibby I knew it was time…I keep thinking though that the solution might have just been to let Teague play with the starters and cut Bibby’s minutes. Its easy to look bad when you’re on the floor with Mo, Zaza, and Powell instead of Joe, Josh, and Al…Hopefully they get out of this slump.

The knock on Teague was that he wasn’t being aggressive enough. I haven’t watched a lot of the Hawks lately, but I know early in the season he was basically just walking the ball up and handing it off to Jamal or JJ. Teague’s value is when he’s attacking and pushing the tempo. If he keeps doing that, his minutes should increase.

As I said in the previous blog, the verdict is still out on this trade. If Hinrich return value is extremely low compared to Jordon future potentials then it’s a bad trade. However, if Captain Kirk can get the Hawks playing in the second round, then it was a good trade. Also understand that even if the Hawks didn’t have Jordon in their future plans, perhaps he could have been leveraged for much more given more PT. Also a disaster scenario still looms if the Hawks don’t resign Jamal. Then Sund would have successfully screwed us further losing JC1, JC2 and the 2011 draft pick assuming we exit early in the playoff. Sund did however send a message to all of us when he said:
“it’s up to the players and how they are going to respond to it and how they are going to respond in the playoffs”
So the players and coaches will share some of the blame if things don’t go as plan.

Actually, yeah, that would’ve been appreciated. People were blowing up the blog (and numerous other sources) leading up to the deadline and in the period that followed when deals were still being announced trying to get any information about what the Hawks were or weren’t doing. I don’t know when the ZaZa for Miller trade fell through, but even a “Hey, the Hawks are done dealing” would’ve at least let us know we could move on and wait to find out about all the draft day movement until the dust settled, instead of hanging on trying to find out what the Hawks were doing, if anything.

i report what i know to be solid info, nothing more. yesterday what i knew to be solid info is that the Hawks were trying to make a deal involving Zaza for Miller. so i reported it on Twitter. all of the other stuff is just noise. i realize that’s an outdated approach in some quarters. lots of readers don’t seem to care if info is necessarily true or not. they just want to hear the buzz. as you pointed out, there are lots of places to get that kind of red meat.
sorry, that’s never going to be me. i care too much about accuracy and credibility. if i’m not reasonably confident the info is accurate, i’m not putting it out there. and believe me there are lots of incentives to do it the other way–all i have to do is speculate, put some buzzwords in the headline (”Hawks after ‘Melo?”) and the traffic on here would explode. but that’s just not the way i do things.
“I highly doubt your schedule is so demanding that you barely eat, sleep, bathe”

Frankly, I also think people got really excited because the Hinrich trade gave us an idea that the Hawks were ready to admit that the status quo wasn’t getting things done. A lot of people were hoping that was just the first domino to fall. I guess it’s been less than 2 years since the Jamal trade, but, with all the core, core, core talk, it seems like it’s been forever since the Hawks were willing to do anything but stay the course.

I will make this simple! The trade is good for a short term solution and the short term is where we are now. Long term is for the teams that are outside the playoff window.
Bottom line! Regardless of Josh hoisting jumpers, regardless of Horford not rebounding and blocking out, regardless of Marvin being weak 90% of the time on his way to the basket, regardless of all that, JOE JOHNSON has to score buckets!!! Not 14 a game, not 19 a game but 24+ per game to create necessary victories for the Hawks. Once he does that, the rest will take care of itself….

So Bibby is a little disappointed that the hawks management didnt say anything to him?
From the Washington Post;
Bibby was upset about being dealt from a playoff contender to a lottery team in Washington, but he said that he will not pursue a buyout at this team. “That’s nothing I’m really worried about right now,” Bibby said.
Bibby said what upset him most about getting trade was that he wasn’t informed of the move in advance. “I didn’t know until the deal was done. When you’re an older guy in this league, I think you deserve the respect to get told that something is in the works. But that’s the way this business is. Rememer, that LD’s offense is something like no other team is running. So surely he isn’t going to throw a new PG out there. If he did that, it would look like his offense is as easy to learn as a simplistic iso-based offensive scheme. And since LD has so many convinced that this offense is better (despite scoring fewer points), he should continue with the smoke and mirror tricks. Hinrich may sit until he is finished reading Chapter 87: “How to Forget the Motion Offense in the 4th Quarter”.

MC: if there was anything that surprised me about the coverage of the last couple of days, it was that I learned about the Hinrich trade from 4 or 5 other sources before I heard it from this blog or from @ajchawks. I respect and appreciate not wanting to post unverified information, and I think if you were to do that people would only get more p-ssed off in the end that the Hawks were not able to close the deal on anything. But I won’t pretend it didn’t surprise me a little that your first tweet after the trade was two hours after it was reported, published, etc. on Yahoo, CBS, etc.
Of course, it now appears that Bibby was in the same boat as you.
In any case, I’ve always gotten the impression that you concern yourself more with the day to day goings on of the players on the court, in practice, etc. than you do with the workings of the front office, and you do a fine job of covering that. The day I am dissatisfied with the coverage here is the day I no longer show up — in true Atlanta sports fan style.

My philosophy on trades, just confirmed on ESPN: Always trade multiple players for one good player. I think we may have just done that with Hinrich – no offense Hilton.
From ESPN:
“PEOPLE WHO FORGET THAT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TRADE THREE OR FOUR QUARTERS FOR A DOLLAR IN BASKETBALL: F-minus
If you disagree with the previous few paragraphs, you’re bucking five solid decades of NBA history. Since 1965, not one NBA team that traded a package of pieces for a superstar regretted it after the fact. Don’t believe me? Here’s the complete list:
1965: Philly trades Connie Dierking, Paul Neumann, Lee Shaffer and cash to San Francisco for Wilt Chamberlain.
1968: Lakers trade Jerry Chambers, Archie Clark and Darrell Imhoff to Philly for Wilt Chamberlain.
1970: Milwaukee trades Flynn Robinson and Charlie Paulk to Cincinnati for Oscar Robertson.
1975: Lakers trade Elmore Smith, Brian Winters, Dave Meyers and Junior Bridgeman to Milwaukee for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
1983: Philly trades Caldwell Jones and Cleveland’s 1983 first-rounder (No. 3, Rodney McCray) to Houston for Moses Malone.
1993: Phoenix trades Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang to Philly for Charles Barkley.
1994: Washington trades Tom Gugliotta, 1996 first-rounder (No. 11, Todd Fuller), 1998 first (No. 13, Keon Clark) and 2000 first (No. 7, Chris Mihm) to Golden State for Chris Webber.
1996: Houston trades Robert Horry, Sam Cassell, Chucky Brown and Mark Bryant to Phoenix for Charles Barkley.
1996: Phoenix trades Michael Finley, Sam Cassell, A.C. Green and a 1998 No. 2 (No. 53, Greg Buckner) to Dallas for Jason Kidd, Tony Dumas and Loren Meyer.
1999: Phoenix trades Danny Manning, Pat Garrity, 2001 first-rounder (No. 18, Jason Collins) and 2002 first (No. 9, Amare Stoudemire) to Orlando for Penny Hardaway.
2004: Houston trades Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato to Orlando for Tracy McGrady, Tyronn Lue, Reece Gaines and Juwan Howard.
2005: New Jersey trades Alonzo Mourning, Eric Williams, Aaron Williams, Philly’s 2005 No. 1 pick (No. 16, Joey Graham) and a 2006 No. 1 (No. 20, Renaldo Balkman) to Toronto for Vince Carter.
2005: Miami trades Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, Caron Butler, a 2006 No. 1 (No. 26, Jordan Farmar) and a 2006 No. 2 (No. 50, Renaldas Seibutis) to the Lakers for Shaquille O’Neal.
2007: Boston trades Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 No. 1 (No. 28, Wayne Ellington) and the rights to Minnesota’s 2009 No. 1 (No. 6, Jonny Flynn) to Minnesota for Kevin Garnett.
2008: Lakers trade Kwame Brown, Jarvaris Crittendon, Aaron McKie, the rights to Marc Gasol, a 2008 No. 1 (No. 28, Donte Greene) and a 2010 No. 1 (No. 28, Greivis Vasquez) to Memphis for Pau Gasol.
That’s 15 trades in all. Eight of them (Wilt, Wilt again, Oscar, Moses, Barkley, Shaq, KG and Gasol) resulted in a championship or a Finals appearance within two seasons. The Lakers ended up winning five titles with Kareem. Houston came within two wins and a Matt Maloney meltdown of making the ‘97 Finals with Barkley. Jersey easily won the Vince trade; same for Houston with T-Mac. Phoenix won the Kidd trade, although Finley had a nice career in Dallas. Washington’s Webber deal could have backfired if any of the picks panned out … but they didn’t. Only Phoenix’s Penny deal failed to work out, but in a strange twist, the Suns got their No. 1 pick back in a subsequent deal and took Stoudemire with it, so
The title of the article is like “Always trade quarters for dollars”. When you trade multiple players for 1 good one, you almost always come out ahead. In today’s NBA, it’s a stars League. Only 5 guys on the court at once. You want the best 5 guys in crunch time.
Glad we got Hinrich, major upgrade over Bibby. And if Teague blossoms, and Wilkens doe’s well, so much the better. We may finally do something.

I hoped you all like my interview. Did you realized that I made sure to use UPSIDE at least once. Yep this team should go REALLY FAR now. Hinrich is BIG TIME point guard that we needed. I will miss Mike Bibby because he was IN HIS PRIME. Now when Marvin shows his UPSIDE and POTENTIAL we will get out of this slump. Remember fans, all seasons have PEAKS and VALLEYS. By making these trades we have now, we can build upon our MAJOR GOAL which is IMPROVEMENT each year. Hinrich keeps us as an ELITE team because ELITENESS (if that’s a word) is determined in the REGULAR SEASON not the PLAYOFFS.

And I didn’t see the Knicks-Cavs game, but just looking at the box score, it looks like Toney Douglas is now Chauncey Billups’ backup point guard, and it looks like he kinda sucks in that role. He was drafted as a PG, played PG until Chris Duhon and thenDRose came along in Chitown etc. But they all say he is a natural PG who can play SG, not the other way around.

Defense starts at the point of attack. Between Hinrich (notoriously a defender of pgs) and Teague (good defensive potential) we will be better. If Drew continues to play Jamal huge minutes at the point, we’ll suffer.
Overlook Hilton Armstrong if you want. He just brought athleticism to our group of backup bigs, which did not have it before. Dude is “end of the bench”, but could be more for us. You never know. It’s just too bad that Teague didn’t ( couldn’t ) play with this kind of energy with the 2nd unit throughout the year. Jamal is really the only bad defender left in the rotation, unless LD insists on continuing to play Powell and/or Zaza.
I’ve said before that the Hawks can compensate for one bad defender; it’s only when they had two on the floor together that the Hawks couldn’t make up for it. With Bibby and Mo gone, Teague/Hinrich/Damien taking their minutes, and Zaza apparently falling out of the rotation, the Hawks’ defense overall should get a lot better, and hopefully this means less foul trouble for the starters too.

Ra’mon,
I agree. because Hinrich is a better fit with Jamal than teague. And if there is a switch, Hinrich can defend some SGs. And playing with the starters allows teague be more active on offense (pushing the ball, etc), and he has guys who can finish his assists.
I woud start teague, and keep a close eye on him. if he is struggling, or the same is getting away early, then I would bring Hinrich in ASAP.

If he’s playing like this, don’t you have to let Teague remain the starter, and bring Hinrich off of the bench?
I say that’s a better play for Drew anyways. At the least, Teague buys you minutes at the start of games. He’s not too bad quarterbacking the offense, so he wouldn’t be expected to put on an offensive display. He could simply run the offense, and let the scorers (JJ, Horford, Josh) do their thing.
With Hinrich and Jamal both coming off the bench, you have two solid threats to score, and you’re not completely lost defensively with Hinrich capable of applying pretty good defensive pressure.
I think the Hinrich deal just brings a lot more versatility to this team. Drew can do a lot more than he could before, but he has to play his cards right, and he can’t resort to what we saw before. Logging heavy minutes for JJ, Jamal, Hinrich and letting Teague rot. Teague’s capable of logging meaningful minutes.

Well, well, well. Not so much wailing about the Hinrich acquisition now, huh?
What a difference it makes when you actually HAVE the option of putting in a defensively capable combo guard who can also shoot.
Now all LD has to do is keep giving Teague minutes and keep using Jamal exclusively the way he was meant: as a hired gun to come in and fire off some rounds (shots).
No more having to use Jamal as a sixth starter in an attempt to win the game offensively, with only a little used 2nd year man as your only defensive counter measure (which by the way, Teague’s defense hasn’t quite evolved to the point of where he was able to turn a game around with just his defense…but he’s getting there).
Maybe now the “Fire Larry” chants will calm down just a hair. Long as he doesn’t keep Teague under the bench and Jamal in the game for 35 minutes every night.

I’ve been one of Teague’s biggest critics all year. But I do agree that if he’s giving us production while playing with the starters, then he should at least be the new Royal Ivey, and start each half. And if he plays well enough, give him spot minutes in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
I still don’t think he’s a leader, but he’s far more comfortable with those starters. I guess because his mistakes aren’t magnified when he’s on the court with them. And they can make him look like a better player. Kind of how Zaza was a far better player as a starter, than as a reserve.
The key is going to be if Drew falls in love with a Hinrich – Crawford backcourt, especially at the end of games. Jamal is still Jamal, and he does not need to be in the game if we need better defense on the floor ( even if we’re losing ).
I want Hinrich – JJ – Marvin – Smith – Horford to close out games.

So far, this has been one of the best games the Hawks have played in years. All year it has been a slow offense with some hints of Iso. For the past 5 years, it’s just been ISO. Tonight, the Hawks are doing it all. Rebounding, playing great defense, great movement on offense, dribble penetration by PG, fast break points, you name it they’ve done it. GREAT GAME!!

SteveW ,
In a vaccum, yes. In the big picture, no. I don’t think Teague’s defensive production was enough to keep him on the court because it wasn’t enough to truly impact the game when he was on the court with a ball-dominating, defensively inept guard.
With Bibby and Jamal around, Drew had given upon on defense, and Teague would have to have been an all-world level defender to justify NOT doing what he did:
What he did was give up on the backcourt providing defense, and give in to trying to win with offense (shooting and shot-creating off of ISOs) and not turning the ball over.
With Hinrich, the dynamics of the game change. Hinrich can defend either guard position, something Teague can’t do. Hinrich takes the pressure off of Joe and allows LD to trot out a lineup that will have only ONE defensive hole at the most, instead of TWO.
Teague still has issues scoring, as his 2-8 shooting will attest to, as does his 2 blocked attempts. The problem is that this was too much in a scheme that depended on the backcourt producing more good offense than it did bad defense.
So yeah, you were right. But the circumstances surrounding the situation were wrong. And that was Sund’s fault.

Your case is quite strong, you sure don’t need to prove it to me. I’ve argued for more minutes for Teague for a long time. Northcyde used to give me some pretty good $hit for it, but I understood what he was saying.
To better clarify my point, I blame Drew for falling victim to the “we’ll have to win with offense, not defense” philosophy, which meant Bibby and Jamal were the guys at the pg spot. I’m not saying I agree completely with that concept, but I am saying that I understand why.
The reason I blame Sund is because I felt we could have gotten Hinrich a year or two ago. But that’s just me talking, I don’t know the real details behind all the moves in the League.
As for Teague, he still really needs to work on his offense, i.e. shooting/scoring. He gets blocked a lot when he goes to the basket, and he doesn’t shoot from the perimeter impressively or even average.
Having said that, if LD reverts to a system where Hinrich and Jamal dominate the pg position again, I’ll happily join you in the “beat LD over the head with a wooden stick” campaign.
I hope he doesn’t. Or I’ll be ordering up a batch of shirts from Clyde. You can imagine what they’ll say.

Co-sign that. The nail in the coffin will be LD’s own comments. I guarantee you he will say the same thing after this game about Teague that he said last game. He’ll say that Teague was aggressive and defended well, and that he needs that from him.
If LD reverts back to what he was doing with Bibby/Jamal, and buries Teague on the bench, then he’s a damn fool. I like what I saw out of this tonight. 20 solid minutes for Teague when the game counted , so he could show what he’s made of. He got his burn with the starters. Clearly he does better with them than he does with Jamal and a bunch of butter-fingered scrubs (Zaza alone is responsible for about 100 missed assists for Teague).

If Drew plays it smart, he essentially has 4 gaurds in Teague, Hinrich, Jamal, and JJ.
3 of those 4 can defend.
I personally like Teague to start, because Teague + Jamal = the Jamal show.
With Teague running with the 1st unit, he actually looks to quarterback the offense. He also showed a lot today defensively vs. one of the better backcourts in the league with Monte and Curry. I think that alone should be enough to tempt Drew to let the kid loose. If we see the same routine, then we’ve got problems.

Im starting to think Rick Sunds is a decent GM
lets look at what he has done since he been here….
-drafted Jeff Teague…. ( its a decent draft pick to be so high.)
traded dead weight Acie Law, and Speedy Claxton for Jamal Crawford
-got rid of dead weight mo evans, mike bibby, and a rookie we dont use…
to get kirk Hinrich… which looks good so far….
all this and got a team that makes the playoffs over and over without going over the Luxary tax…
Now if the Hawks get Dwight Howard Next year, I dont care what yall say.. I will crown him top GM!!
all these other GM’s givin up a arm in a leg to get superstars and still not going to win a championship… and the hawks are right their with them
so if you look at RIck Sunds optimisticly, he is actually doing good!!

He created that dead weight, and Marvin and Zaza are still eating $12 million of the Hawks’ cap. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This trade canceled out his prior mistake of giving Bibby a 3 year deal.
Teague does look like he could be Sund’s first good draft pick in the last 10 years though. He better continue to get consistent minutes.

I think it’s a positive sign that Drew did clock him a solid number of minutes, and he also didn’t have him sit out the rest of the game on the bench.
He also showed confidence (at least IMO) by getting him right back in there after twisting his ankle when it looked like Monte was about to take over. Drew could’ve gone back to Hinrich, who had 2 fouls already, but went with Teague instead.
Nobody’s raving about his offensive game, but, he offers a skill set that’s more suitable for the roster we have. We have a young athletic team, and it didn’t make sense to have a old slow PG running with that group. We need a guy whose gonna push the rock, and if we’re caught in the halfcourt, someone whose gonna quarterback the offense – not someone whose just gonna hand it off to JJ or Jamal and let them go one on one.
Rondo doesn’t always put up the best stat lines, but sometimes his effect – controlling the tempo and directing the offense – is the most important aspect to the C’s.
I think it could be very similar here. Teague may not have a glamourous offensive game, but he does offer this team things that no PG in recent memory has been capable of offering. He may not score 20 a night, but he won’t give up 20 freebies to opposing PG’s either. He’ll make guys work for it.

And Hinrich’s what I expected he’d be, but I didn’t envision looking quite as nice as it does. Probably because I’m so used to seeing our gaurds let opposing gaurds blow right past them.
As Najeh pointed out, we can make up for one bad defender. But, it’s difficult trying to make up for 2 bad defenders. Hinrich’s addition instantly upgrades our perimeter defense.
And I bet the two happiest guys are Al Horford and Josh Smith. They actually have gaurds who aren’t letting guys run free into the lane.

Teague did not have a good game offensively although I thought he got fouled on two shot attempts but defensively he harassed Curry all night. When he was on Ellis he made him work hard too. Had 6 dimes and 3 steals. His defense lead to offense. Dude will be alright as a starter but he has to work on the offensive end.

Summary
Teague played well defensively and got the 1st units into sets. He slowed down Monta Ellis when he threatened to erase a 19 pt lead by himself. He really still does not understand when to attack and when not. It is disturbing that he gets stripped so much going to the rack.
Hinrich played good defensively and can make shots with the first team but he also had a disturbing turnover where a big man stripped him when he was trying to run the pick and roll. He was on the court when Golden State cut a 30 pt lead down to 11 or 12. He looks no better than Teague did when coming off the bench to be fair.
Next, good game all around for the Hawks, but I still say Hinrich was a lateral move with the potential to go really downhill if Jordan is as good as some think he will be, plus Teague can do the job defensively. Also, Mo was a bigger part than some give credit for and our bench sucks arse bad.
Looked good tonight but we are not going anywhere with this team when we don’t have a single big that demands playing time off the bench, that was a bigger problem than PG because we had Teague.

This is true. This is the one aspect of his game tonight I didn’t like. He has to finish better when he gets inside. I liked the play he made on Acie late in the 2nd, when he drove against him, jumped into him, and drew the foul. Considering that nobody else on this team can do that, it would be nice if Teague could do it more often.

mykhalc, I agree he still defers a little too much but his defense and ability to put pressure on the opposins teams D with his speed makes him WAY better than Acie (a better Jumper as well….although its funky looking). It took Rondo a while to find his place offensively, If LD just stays consistant with the minutes, he will be a force to be reckond with in the playoffs.

Sur….prise…..Sur….prise……Sur….prise. The “SOFT’S” actually looked like a basketball team. That “smoove” person did the dummy thing only twice, I was amazed and ISO didn’t “POUND” as much as usual, but, that Marvin is pitiful. He needs to eat his veggies. Jeff may be getting some confidence and finding his way around the floor. It was fun to be on the winning side again and Kirk is more then likely going to be somewhat beneficial but they are still to “SOFT” to beat the teams they will have to in order to make a run for the playoffs. I can’t jump up and down for joy because the warriors are defenseless but at least we executed a lot of the plays. The last quarter was not that refreshing but baby steps first. Beat the teams you should beat and play the other teams hard.

LOL @ praising Sund. Because Teague played a B game vs Golden St and a vet like Hinrich isn’t garbage?
Come on now.
As for Teague, the most important thing he did tonight was to make his presence known in the game. We can’t have him going 2 – 9 every night, but if he can defend and push the tempo to get the starters easier shots, he’s doing his job.
One thing about it, we’re going to face some pretty good PGs in the coming days:
- Andre Miller
- Derrick Rose
- Russell Westbrook
- Chauncey Billups
For both Teague and Hinrich, it’ll be baptism by fire. If they don’t let those 4 guys have their way, we may be onto something.

I’m satisfied with Hinrich bcuz he brought exactly what I was expecting on the perimeter D and knocked a few shots down..2 early fouls and his nagging calf injury held him back from being more effective with the core rotational guys.Kinda wish Hilton got some burn during the game, but nice to see Powell get some, and knock some shots down and grabbed 8 rebounds..Better competition is coming up so we need to play like the first 3 QTRs and not the last QTR

I think aside from his two three pointers which, all of Teague’s shots came from within the paint, not to mention one of those attempts he got hacked but he gets no respect yet. I’m not mad he is doing everything I thought he would, limited offensively but able to push tempo and create easy shots for others. All in all I’m not ready to put him in the starting lineup YET, but I think he will start the next couple games as Kirk gets adjusted which is fine by me.

Anyway hat you slice it or dice it, Atlanta’s back court shut down one of the premier guard tandems in the NBA, in their own building. Now, you can say what you want about individual efforts in this game, but the truth of the matter is that the Hawks as a team showed a level of agression that I haven’t seen in them since they played the Boston Celtics…last season! They were on a seek and destroy mission last night and it started at the defensive end. If they bring that level of commitment to defense every night (which is possible), they’ll be okay for the rst of the season.
As for Teague. He may realize it, he might not, but he’s playing for his Atlanta Hawks life. Sund has a penchant for trading point guards that don’t produce…

Portland is 33-25 and may be a lot better with Wallace in the mix. Personally I think the “SOFT’S” should handle them but that takes thinking for a few players. ISO Joe does not need to POUND, That “smoove” person should live on the free throw line tonight and not at the 3 point line. Larry needs to take a good look at Hilton for defensive purposes and Jeff Teague should start. How else will he be able to know what he can do with bigger or stronger players if he is not in the mix. I hope LD does not kill this kids confidence. Let’s see if they are learning anything or if they remain the Atlanta “SOFT’S”
