Atlanta Hawks: Suns 105, Hawks 97

Phoenix–The news of the trade shouldn’t overshadow the fact that the Hawks are suddenly reeling. That’s three straight Ls and five of six with Golden State (tough matchup), Portland (tough team) and Denver (tough building even without Melo) still to go on this trip.

  • Zaza was held out as the Hawks continued trade discussions. I’m thinking any swap would be big for big but no word yet on the details of the teams/players involved.
  • But first some more reaction to the trade that did go down. . . .
  • L.D. said the Hawks had been calling around on point guards for the last couple weeks.
  • “As everybody knows we’ve been searching for a point guard for a while, somebody who can come in and run this club,” he said. “Not saying that Mike didn’t go a good job, but there just comes a point where a change has to take place. We as an organization felt like it was that time.”
  • L.D. on Hinrich: “Kirk brings such a wealth of toughness at that position. He’s a heady guy, he’s a smart guy. All the intangibles you are looking for he brings to the table.”
  • Jamal: “It’s tough to tell now [how the trade will work]. Mike was the leader at point guard for a while. Jordan has a bright future. Mo is just solid, gives you defense and 3-point shooting. But I played with Kirk Hinrich [in Chicago] and I know what he’s about.”
  • Bibby was a popular teammate. He has a goofy personality and saw it as his job to keep the team loose (though I think the Hawks could end up benefiting from Hinrich’s more serious approach).
  • It’s a business, of course, but there was a real sense of personal loss in Atlanta’s locker room.
  • “Any time you make trades, it’s always tough, especially when you grow close and attached to players,” Drew said. “But that’s just the nature of this business. It just comes with the territory.”
  • Bibby, Mo and JC2 were informed they might be part of a trade and stayed behind at the team’s hotel. Word trickled through the rest of the team but players weren’t told of the pending deal until just before game time
  • Al: “It’s just tough for us right before the game to get this news. It’s kind of not unexpected since we’d heard but to hear it just actually happened . . .”
  • Joe: “We let three good guys go who I had become really good friends with. But at the same time we understand the business aspect and this is the profession we chose knowing that trades happen. You have to deal with it. Getting Kirk and Armstrong is definitely going to contribute to what we are trying to do. Kirk is very defensive-minded and a guy who can really knock down the open shot and penetrate and make plays for others as well. I think he is going to be beneficial for us.”
  • Moving Jordan and the first-round pick is the latest indication the Hawks, when push comes to shove, are more focused on making moves they think will help now vs. player and asset development in the future. I’m sure opinions vary on that approach among my blog people but, as I always say, the Hawks will be judged on what happens this postseason.
  • Al: “Jordan, as short as time he was here, we know he has a lot of potential.”
  • Drew on Armstrong: “He’s a big body. He’s athletic. He bangs. I like the fact he’s a guy who plays hard. You can’t have enough type of those guys.”
  • Josh on Armstrong: “I think in the paint he can block some shots and be able to add that inside presence and help us out down there a little bit. When we played against them he was a effective in a couple of games.”
  • Now on to the game . . .
  • The Hawks rallied from 18 down to tie it at 92-92 with five minutes left. The Suns closed them out by winning the kind of possession-by-possession sequences in which the Hawks tends to falter. Not a good idea to get into a shootout with the Suns, who made 10 of 14 shots in the fourth.
  • Perhaps it would have been different at the end without the big deficit or a back-to-back but it’s an L all the same.
  • “It’s tough to spot a team 18 points and having to fight back, especially a team like Phoenix,” Drew said. “They shoot the ball so well, particularly from the 3-point line (13 for 26). We exerted a lot of energy to get back and I thought our guys wore down at the end.”
  • The Hawks started switching on every screen, an approach that they theoretically should be able to scrap with Hinrich on the floor.
  • “We couldn’t get [stops],” Josh said. “We ended up switching. Nash is a smart point guard. He knew where the mismatches were. Tip your hat to Channing Frye, he hit some tough shots on Damien. Damien was all over him but when you are 6-10, 6-11 you get that ball in position you want it’s kind of hard to block the shot.”
  • Jamal’s scoring and Damien’s defense helped the Hawks get back in it. Jamal made five straight shots but didn’t have an attempt from 6:53 of the fourth until a meaningless layup in the final seconds. “I’m getting back to being me, for sure,” he said.
  • Teague got his second career start was noticeably more decisive in driving the ball. Finishing was another matter though he still was 3 for 6 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line.
  • “I thought he came out aggressive in attack mode and used his speed and quickness,” Drew said. “We need that. I thought he did a tremendous job breaking the defense down and getting to the basket. That’s the way he has to play. Don’t worry about turning the basketball over, just keep the pressure on the defense.”
  • After 10 nights on the road I’m officially on the injured list (shoulder) after a bench press mishap in the gym yesterday. It’s after the All-Star break so I’ve got to push through it. Hurts like hell to lug around bags but I refuse to take the L of getting on one of those old folks carts at the airport tomorrow.

“It’s a business, of course, but there was a real sense of personal loss in Atlanta’s locker room.”

I hope it’s also coupled with a sense of personal responsibility. Bibby was the fall guy for shaking things up, and he certainly wasn’t giving the Hawks what they needed from the point guard position, but it’s not like everyone else was blameless either.

I thought Teague was solid given that it was his second career start. Good to see LD feels the same way, although we should all know better than to expect LD’s actions to align with his words at this point.

Food for thought: Say that the trade deadline comes and goes tomorrow without the Wizards shipping Bibby to a contender. Does Bibby approach the Wizards’ front office and ask for a buyout, a la Ilgauskas last year? If so, do we want him back? I can’t speak for Bibby, who would be giving up a lot of money (not to mention his Bird rights) if he agrees to a buyout. To him, the issue is whether he prefers playoff appearances to dollars at this point in his career. But if I’m the Hawks, I’m hoping he does.

“the Hawks, when push comes to shove, are more focused on making moves they think will help now vs. player and asset development in the future. I’m sure opinions vary on that approach among my blog people ”

Ideally, player and asset development is what keeps organizations stable and successful. In this particular organization, the people responsible for drafting and player development do such a p-ss poor job at it that thet might as well trade them for proven talent that doesn’t require development. I’d like to see the day, though, when this organization can acquire people who will bring in good talent and develop it while also winning games, like every successful organization does.

And Najeh – Bird rights are still valuable even if a player won’t be making above the mid-level. Many teams use their full mid-level on Player X and then decide they also want Player Y but don’t have the capacity to offer him more than the minimum. Bird rights provide an opportunity for such a team to acquire Player Y at a higher salary. If Bibby were bought out, even the Wizards and Hawks would have to use either cap space or a portion of their MLE to “keep” him this summer.

I don’t know why I keep feeling the urge to post trade ideas — maybe deep down inside I’m hoping someone within the Hawks organization will see it and get an idea or something — but anyway, I leave y’all with this for now.

Oh OK, didn’t know that part about Bird rights.

I’m not sure after tonight I want to do anything that will further encourage burial of Teague on the bench, but Bibby in a bench role could be useful.

I will admit it if I’m wrong but I have never been enamored with JC2.
Any rookie that is going to be a SS would have played his way onto
the court. Personally I like players like Hinrich [glue guys].
Heck, I liked Bibby and wish him well. When he returns, we owe him
a warm welcome. We need another one or two hard nosed leader types,
and rid ourselves of some of the rot. * Before tomorrow’s deadline *

I must give Sund a little credit for doing something. (anything)
This team had to be shaken up.
More so than Zaza, I wish for Marvin to leave.
One old man’s wish list of my kind of players…just one or two:
Battier [Heads the list] Lowry, Murphy [rebounder] Artest…..
Gerald Wallace, Amir Johnson, Sessions, Grant Hill, Varejao,
or Reggie Evans, et al.
These guys display some or all of these characteristics;
smart, leaders, tough, play hard every night, glue guys,
they will fight you in order to win, they play defense,
they will knock you down and are great teammates.

Don’t quit now Sund ol’ boy, stay after it.

Once again, Mr. Michael Cunningham…..Thanks!

Great trade idea but WHY WOULD DETROIT MAKE THAT TRADE??

Najeh Davenpoop

February 24th, 2011

Detroit would save $2 million off next year’s cap and a little less than $1 million this year. They are being sold and do not want to take on additional salary. I wouldn’t mind throwing in one of the Hawks’ two second round picks this year if it helped get the deal done.

MsDee,

I doubt Hilton will be a consistent rotational player for us, unless he really impresses L.D. or we end up trading Zaza. I definitely don’t think Hilton will start. I think he’ll most likely have a reduced version of Jason Collins’ role. Don’t be surprised if Hilton gets a lot of DNP-CDs.

Andre

February 24th, 2011
2:13 am

MsDee,

Horford is not a part of the rebounding problem for the team. He’s really the only guy on the team who consistently boxes out and pursues rebounds. Keep in mind that Horford is a top-10 rebounder in this league, and he is playing against the largest players in the league. The biggest problem for us in terms of rebounding is that our team, collectively, does a poor job of boxing out and gang rebounding. The guards typically start sprinting the other way when a shot is missed, and Josh often relies on his jumping ability to get rebounds rather than boxing out. Josh is still a pretty good rebounder, but he does it unconventionally. Those of you who don’t believe what I am saying should watch some of the game tape.

At any rate, I’d still love to get someone like Big Ben on the team, along with someone like prince. Those types of trades of extremely unlikely to happen though, so don’t get your hopes up.

Realistically, how many people think that the Hinrich trade is going to be the only move made before the deadline? I’m desperately hoping that another trade is made, hopefully for an impact player either better than Hinrich, or for a quality center to allow Horford to play the position he prefers. I’m really doubting that any other move is going to be made, though. I’m curious, how many of you think another move will take place before the deadline. Time is running short, and we haven’t heard anything concrete yet as far as Zaza goes.

MsDee,

I’m not saying Hilton Armstrong doesn’t have any ability, he’s actually a very solid interior defender. He’s pretty limited on the offensive end, but the main reason I don’t expect him to play much is due to the fact that we have Zaza, Collins, Powell, and even Etan already on the roster as backup bigs. Also, considering Collins barely plays on nights when he isn’t in the starting lineup, I don’t think there are many minutes to go around behind Josh and Al. Zaza is the only backup big who consistently gets minutes, and unless L.D. trust Hilton, I just don’t see him playing much. On the defensive end though, I’d definitely take him over Zaza, Powell, or Etan. I think he can help us out there if he’s given a chance. He’s got good length, size, and athleticism.

Najeh,

Popcornmachine.net proves again my view on Jamal:

When league left the court on the first period, we were even.

It’s true that Teague was having difficulties defending the pick ‘n roll, but he trying and fighting.

Jamal then played a bunch of minutes (19 – all the rest of the first half) and during that period the Hawks were outscored by 14 points whilst Jamal had 5 points and shot horribly.

The hawks got back into the game with a modest but significant recovery to open the third when Teague materialised a 3 point play, had a terrific dish to Horford who converted 2 FT and a good drive which Horford rebounded and dunked in.

Then Jamal was obviously hot and had 8 or 10 points almost in no time but then he disappeared and after being tied, the game got away from us with Jamal hurting us on D to close the game.

LD should have taken Jamal out and either go big (with JJ at the point and getting Marvin in – who played well on D) or give Teague the closing minutes as change of pace / good effort on perimeter D move. Like I said, he was struggling a bit on D but who isn’t against Nash? And at least he was giving it a good effort.

@vava74,

Totally agree, no reason for Teague not to be in the game towards the end. He was not hurting us. Driving and attacking the basket is what he was doing out there. He could draw fouls since he is pretty good at the ft line.

MsDee

I guess the way Woody and LD see Teague is like a parent hesitate when allowing their 16yr to drive a car for the 1st time. Even though they have their drivers license, us parents will never truly be comfortable with our kids driving. LD is hesitate to trust Teague to close out games, even if he is an excellent ‘DRIVER’!!

Arnstrong is a 8-10 guy because of his inability (or lack of) rebounding. Say ZaZa with an ability to block and challenge shots. I like the young man’s athleticism, but I still hope there’s a physical presence in the proposed ZaZa deal…

@ Niremetal…
Do you think that the “infamous” trade exemption finally gets used a deal involving ZaZa? Or is that even a possibility?

Sources: Clips, Cavs agree to trade

ESPN.com

The Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed in principle to a trade that would send Baron Davis and the Clippers’ 2011 first-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon, league sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

Davis
Davis
Williams
Williams

The deal saves the Clippers considerable money the next two seasons while giving them a younger point guard who made the All-Star team while playing with LeBron James.

Davis is still owed nearly $28 million over the next two seasons and the balance of his $13 million contract this year. Moon’s contract expires after this season. Williams is owed the balance of his $9.3 million salary this season and, with player options of $8.5 million for each of the next two years, potentially could get out of his contract altogether. The savings should give the Clippers more flexibility in free agency the next two seasons.

The Clippers would give up a likely top-10 lottery pick to make the savings happen. “That just shows you how much we hate this draft,” one Clippers source told ESPN.com.

But the lottery pick from the Clippers was exactly what the Cavs were after. A Cavs source told ESPN.com that the trade was made primarily for the draft pick.

“We know we’re going to have to build this team through the lottery,” the source said. “We hope Baron works out, but our primary focus was the pick. We really wanted two top-10 picks to infuse the team with young talent.”

In Davis, the Cavs would get a veteran who, when he’s engaged, is one of the top point guards in the league. But will Davis be engaged on a team with the worst record in the NBA?

More On The Clippers

For more news, notes and analysis of L.A., check out the ClipperBlog. Blog

“Baron won’t be happy,” said a GM who has had past dealings with Davis. “This is a worst-case scenario for him. He was just starting to get happy in L.A. playing with [Clippers rookie] Blake Griffin. There’s not much to get excited about in Cleveland these days.”

The trade agreement is a revival of discussions that began over the summer, when the Cavaliers scrambled to upgrade their talent to appease James, but those talks ultimately collapsed when Clippers owner Donald Sterling nixed the deal.

Neither Davis nor Williams suited up Wednesday night. Davis sat out the Clippers’ loss to the New Orleans Hornets with swelling in his knee. Williams sat out Cleveland’s loss to Houston, after returning from a hip injury before the All-Star break.

The notion of Davis’ being reunited with Cavaliers coach Byron Scott would be met with skepticism after the two clashed earlier in their careers in New Orleans.

However, a source with knowledge of the situation said that their relationship has improved somewhat in recent years and a potential reunion “has to be OK” because the trade talks have progressed to this point.

There also is a question of how the trade would affect Griffin, who seemed to be developing a chemistry with Davis.

“I think anything’s possible,” said a source with knowledge of the talks. “I mean, would Utah really trade Deron Williams?”

Love this trade and count me among those that hope there is another one planned before the trade deadline ends. For those that cannot understand the instant improvement in perimeter defense will save both penetration and fouls while resulting in lower shooting percentages for our opponents, they are not truly basketball purists. If Armstrong can protect the rim when he gets into the game, that is a plus.

Baron Davis is snakebit. He can never get any talent around him long enough to make a push to a winning record. I understand his lax of being in shape to start the season, and the fact that that team hasn’t really started winning with regularity.
Baron around vets would be a good get; that contract is just unfriendly.

And please, no suggestions to bring back Bibby. He doesn’t offer up any winning attributes going forward. Let him work behind Wall and see how his attitude is now…he wasn’t going to be happy coming off our bench.

As for Marvin / Zaza rumors, both need to be jettisoned to a new start. As for Larry rewarding minutes for those who play well…

Marvin, 29min/2pts on 1-7/5 rebs/2 assists…and his defense was questionable on any Phoenix Sun he matched up with.

Time for Marvin to allow his potential to grow elsewhere. Give me a Battier or Brooks at this point as both fit the need here. And no, our PG issues are not yet resolved.

And what value do draft picks really have for this coaching regime? As long as Larry is here, they will mean very little.

Team loss tonight. Josh and Al weren’t rebounding early, and our defense was bad. It’s hard to come back from 18 points down on the road (unless you’re the Charlotte Bobcats and you’re playing the Hawks  ).

I think Jeff played ok (all things considered). And in 19 minutes of PT, Teague had 3 FTA. For the whole season, Bibby had 46. Teague definitely deserves another 15-20 minutes of PT tomorrow night.

What’s up with Marvin? 1-7 tonight in 29 minutes. The irony is he had a +8 rating, and was the only Hawks in the positive. We need “it was not a bad pick” to come hype up Marvin again, because that was when Marvin went on his hot streak.

And what’s up with JJ? His points the last 5 games…11, 14, 11, 14, and 12. He still gets his share of rebounds and assists, but we need more scoring from him, especially since the Hawks have lost 5 of their last 6.

I agree that Jordan was a promising player, but I don’t necessarily agree that players like him don’t come around often. Undersized combo guards are one of the most common type of players you can find in the league. Dominique Jones and Eric Bledsoe both went in the second half of the same first round. The role of a scorer off the bench is not that hard to replace, at least compared with other positions.

As HOOPSWORLD’s Alex Kennedy covered earlier, the Atlanta Hawks have acquired point guard Kirk Hinrich and center Hilton Armstrong from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans, Jordan Crawford and their 2011 first round draft pick.

With all of the other Eastern Conference power players strengthening their lineups over the past eight months coupled with Atlanta’s recent struggles on the court it was only a matter of time before the franchise jumped into the fray.

Ever since the Atlanta Hawks passed on the likes of Chris Paul and Deron Williams in the 2005 draft for Marvin Williams the subject of point guard has been a touchy one to loyal followers of the franchise.

Those concerns were magnified during the 2009-10 campaign when Bibby, who’d been solid in his first two seasons with the team, posted career-low numbers across the board. Before the start of the 2010-11 season Bibby told HOOPSWORLD part of the reason for his struggles was reporting to camp out of playing shape due to his contract negotiations that offseason.

During the early stages of this season it appeared Bibby, now in better shape, was accurate in his assessment and he jumped out the gate shooting over 50 percent from three-point range. However, after the torrid start the veteran point guard cooled off considerably which led to the team’s decision to shop him around the league.

Since the Hawks have goals of making it to the Eastern Conference at the very least this season, bringing in Hinrich is an immediate upgrade. The move won’t shake the NBA landscape on a mainstream basis, but there is no denying his addition to the club puts them in a better position than the team occupied heading into the All-Star break.

Trade Advantages

Defensive Presence: Even in Bibby’s prime years he was never known as a defensive stopper. The further Bibby became removed from his prime, the more his defensive deficiencies became obvious to even the most causal of fan.

In a conference which boasts supremely quick point guards such as Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo and Brandon Jennings (and now Deron Williams!), Bibby’s lateral quickness became a liability for Atlanta’s lineup. Since there isn’t a great deal of shot blocking inside teams who were able to penetrate the lane routinely gave the Hawks fits.

Hinrich, 30, on the other hand brings a hard-nosed approach to the defensive end. The former University of Kansas standout has earned praise throughout his career on the defensive side of the ball and will tighten up the Hawks’ porous perimeter defense.

Offense/Playmaking: Although Hinrich is a 42 percent career shooter from the field, he’s a very solid spot-up shooter with range stretching beyond the three-point arc.

In addition, Hinrich has demonstrated the ability to break down opposing defenses, cause havoc and get into the lane which is something the perimeter oriented Hawks have lacked in their offense with Bibby running the show.

Size, Size, Size and More Size: It’s no secret that All-Star center Al Horford wants to play more power forward moving into the future, so Armstrong provides another young body inside to take the pounding which will free Horford up more to play his natural position. Armstrong is really limited on offense but on a roster with plenty of capable scorers all he’ll need to do is rebound, shot block and provide interior toughness.

While the on court product once Hinrich and Armstrong get acclimated to their new teammates will be much better, everything about the deal isn’t great for the Hawks over the long-term.

Trade Disadvantages

Future Talent Pipeline: By acquiring Hinrich and Armstrong, the Hawks essentially sent two first-round draft picks to Washington. Sure Crawford played sparingly this season, but that was expected being slotted behind veterans Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford on the depth chart. Crawford, No. 27 overall pick, in last June’s draft can play and will eventually contribute at the pro level.

Throw in the 2011 first-round pick shipped to the Wizards and the Hawks have definitely weakened their talent pipeline of the future for Hinrich’s services alone since Armstrong is a free agent this summer.

Lastly, second-year point guard Jeff Teague’s role will likely not increase with the move which also brings into question how the team views him as part of the future. Entering the season Teague was expected to give Bibby a run for the starting lineup, but now he will remain relegated to spot duty off the bench.

Financial Flexibility: The already cost conscious Hawks added more payroll to the books when factoring in the value of Hinrich’s remaining deal. The veteran will earn $8 million in 2012. Bibby and Crawford were set to earn $7.3 million next season combined.

Team Chemistry: Bibby may not have been part of the “core” but the guys in the locker room truly respected him on and off the court. Plus he was a solid mentor to Teague. Bringing in new pieces always leads to these types of concerns. It remains to be seen how Hinrich and Armstrong adjust to new teammates, coaches, roles and offensive/defensive philosophies.

Small Forward Depth: The Hawks were extremely thin at small forward to begin with, but by trading Evans the club gets weaker at this slot. Damien Wilkins will presumably inherit Evans’ minutes in the rotation and provides more defense. The move puts more pressure on Williams’ ability to stay healthy which hasn’t been a lock by any stretch this season.

Overall, the Hawks made an extremely solid move to strengthen their chances at competing in a rapidly improving conference and probably overpaid a little doing so. Giving up the first-round pick is a big risk in terms of future trade assets and talent development, but the Hawks faithful were getting restless standing idle so you can’t fault the team by upgrading the (very touchy) point guard position.

2011 draft will be one of the worst in history. How many underclassmen will come out with the impending lockout?

Our 2011 late first rounder with Sund/BK is like a 2nd rounder in any other draft for any other team.

hawks_4_life

February 24th, 2011

Rather than remain bystanders in an Eastern Conference that is either top-heavy (Boston, Miami, Chicago) or has been hyper-active in transforming their roster (Orlando, New York), the Hawks jumped into the fray on Wednesday by acquiring Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong for Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans, Jordan Crawford and a first round pick in 2011.

Bibby remained an excellent floor-spreading shooter at point guard, but didn’t produce anything of value off the dribble and was a complete liability on the defensive end. The Hawks give up 105.9 points per 100 possessions, which ranks them 13th in the NBA and the addition of Hinrich will allow the team to stop the ball better up top and that trickles down to the rest of the team.

Hinrich is several years older than he was when he played excellent defense against Dwyane Wade in the 2007 Playoffs and he hasn’t looked himself on that end of the floor this season. The Hawks need to hope some of that is based on the kinds of players he was teamed with as a member of the Wizards.

Hinrich isn’t quite as good of a pure perimeter shooter as Bibby, but he is shooting a still strong 38.4% from distance and that is a fairly typical output for him historically. He also is skilled on the pick and roll, an area that will benefit Atlanta’s offensive output. The Hawks are slightly below average in offensive efficiency and hopefully the infusion of Hinrich means more Al Horford pick and rolls and less isolations from Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford.

I’d also like to see the Hawks give Jeff Teague a little bit more run since he is essentially their only young player with latent potential left on the roster. Losing a first round pick in the upcoming draft, along with the 2010 first round pick doesn’t make Atlanta’s already bleak long-term outlook appear any better.

Armstrong was the 12th overall pick in 2006 and has legitimate size, but he has failed to develop in a way to warrant anything more than end of rotation minutes. He’s a decent rebounder and shotblocker, but doesn’t produce offensively, though that fits what the Hawks generally need. Armstrong has had a few decent moments this season and he adds six fouls against Dwight Howard that Maurice Evans couldn’t produce. I wouldn’t expect him to finally figure things out, but maybe he overachieves with Atlanta and allows Larry Drew to give Horford a few extra minutes at power forward. As far as throw-ins go, you can do a lot worse than Armstrong.

The Hawks will now have Hinrich, Joe Johnson, Horford, Smith and Crawford to close out most games and that is a better defensive unit than substituting out Hinrich for Bibby. With the offensive end being a virtual wash, the Hawks should have an easier time winning close games, but this trade doesn’t accomplish a ton from a 48 minute perspective.

For Jamal Crawford, he is reunited with his former rival from Chicago and Hinrich’s presence will probably force him to move on this offseason yet again.

One possible negative for the Hawks is that Bibby could end up with an Eastern Conference playoff team that needs a point guard and there are several that fit the profile. Bibby doesn’t make a huge difference, as the Hawks know well, but if he hits a few three-pointers here and there while facilitating for a team that is strong on defense at the other four positions, then he certainly doesn’t hurt.

The Hawks needed to do something, otherwise they were looking at a first round exit, but this is a half-measure and half-measures are not what fringe contenders need. Atlanta is paying a heavy price-tag simply to trade in one over-30 guard for another over-30 guard.

A more ambitious trade involving Marvin Williams, or even Josh Smith if they wanted to really attempt a substantial shake-up would have had a stronger positive impact.

Grade for Hawks: D+

The Wizards pick up a player selected in the late 20s in Crawford and a pick this season that will also be in the 20s. Washington also saves some money in the trade, though it is relatively minor unless Bibby accepts a reduced buyout to get back to a playoff team.

Washington took on Hinrich with the team’s cap space last June/July and used the pick Chicago threw in to draft Kevin Seraphin and now they add Joe Crawford, and two parts that won’t be around very long. Considering first round picks cost about $3 million apiece to buy from teams looking for cash, this is what they have essentially paid on average for Seraphin, Jordan Crawford and the player to be drafted later.

I thought Jordan Crawford was a stretch to be selected in the first round in the first place and has been given very little playing time this season. He can handle the ball a little bit and was a pure scorer on the college level and the Wizards need to hope he develops into a Jodie Meeks.

For me at this point, no trade for the Wizards is a true success unless it involve Andray Blatche, Nick Young or Al Thornton.

Grade for Wizards: B+

While Thabeet has been called every tired lazy name in the book, I would like a big man’s coach to have a crack at him. It’s not without risk of course, but where are we headed as a core now? Not past April at this point.

Battier is the one who turns this team into a contender. Battier on Melo, Battier on LeBron, Battier on Pierce….I know why Boston wanted him….because they dont’ want to go against him if an East team can grab him up.

No risk with Battier, no risk with Brooks…..ton of risk with Thabeet.

On the side, send me Rip and Ben Wallace, and give up Zaza and Marvin….that deal is doable and gives us more bench help especially if Joe is still aching.

No way Sund can pull off another deal in less than 5 hours though.

I would love a Al/Joe/Ben/KirkorTeague/Battier lineup. There’s assets at every slot.

Josh – Stop playing him at SF. Just stop. Marvin is a better defender at the position and he should be the one standing there for the corner 3, not Josh. Josh should be around the rim as much as humanly possible. 2:1 ratio of Post plays vs jump shots, 10 post ups and 5 jumpers is fine.

Al – Toughen up until we get you some help man. You seem soft since the Blake ordeal, hurt? You are our best center versus the entirety of the league save the few true centers, and even against most true centers, with your quickness and ability to score, you are better than Collins. (I like collins too). Demand the ball in the post when things are going wrong. We’re going to have to limit your time at the 4 back to what it was, alongside whoever subs for Josh, because unfortunately, you at the 4 and Josh at the 3 does not work.

JJ – Tell someone if you’re hurt, PLEASE.You like to play hard and you don’t like to lose. What’s gotten into you lately? Please revert back to your old, seflish self, passing up open 3’s to let Josh shoot them instead is ludicrous. Maybe you should cut out the 3’s altogether and focus on the midrange and post game where you excel. Remember this, if you’re disinterested, it affects everyone on the team.

Ra'mon

February 24th, 2011
11:49 am

Jeje, you say Josh doesn’t like to be told what to do, but he’s always looking to experienced players and trainers to coach him up with his OWN money. You say trade Josh for a C. But do you realize there are only 5 centers in the league who average more rebounds per game than Josh, and three of them are Al, Dwight, and Duncan, and the other two are Jefferson and Tyson (neither are available). After Josh, the next closest center in rebounds is Hibbert, who only averages 7 rebounds a game. The Lakers are the only other team besides the Hawks who have two players in the top 13 players in the league in rebounding. So what ever it is that you think you’re getting in a center by trading Josh, you’re truly misleading yourself.

Now if you would’ve said trade Josh for D. Williams or Chris Paul, no one would be able to argue with something like that. Yet the fact still remains, that Josh is a better PF than Horford. And Horford is a better C than a PF. Horford is in the top 4-5 centers in the league. Yet, Horford wouldn’t be in the top 8 PF’s in the league because of his inability to create his own shot. What the Hawks need is someone like Dalembert or Wallace who can come off the bench and still grab 6-8 rebounds in 22 minutes per game. The starting front court has never been the problem, other than Horford crying about playing C. Do you remember just last season, when Horford and Josh DOMINATED Gasol and the Lakers’ front court? Do you remember how Josh is the only Hawk who has success against Garnett on the defensive end?

Also, the biggest problem with Horford playing the PF position, is he still rarely posts up even at the 4. On Tuesday, how many times did Horford try to post up Gasol? He still does the same thing, and that’s stay at the top of the key and wait for some one to draw his man off of him, giving him an open look. The problem with that formula is, sure it helps Horford scores, but that doesn’t help anyone else on the team. When Josh or Joe posts up, they’re both doing so, while trying to force a double team. When Josh or Joe faces up someone and attempts to drive by their opponent, the defense reacts and rotates. That creates open shots for their teammates. Horford is an excellent mid range shooter, who makes you think his offense is really better than what it is. In all of these games that Horford has had only two games two games where he had 10 free throw attempts (Minnesota and Philadelphia- as a C, no games as a PF). In the games that Horford has played PF more, he’s only averaging 1.9 free throw attempts a game (compared to Josh’s 4 per game – which is low also, but still twice as many as Al). There’s no purpose of moving Horford to PF instead of C, if he’s still not going to be physical on offense.

“Kirk Hinrich”

That’s the ASG’s answer for us (LOL). The Hawks need serious help from a marketing standpoint. If you are not going to compete for a tiltle, which we are not, a least bring in a guy who is going to get people to want to come to Phillips Arena. Of all of the guys, that play point guard in the league, the guy who will draw the least amount of people in Atlanta, to Phillips Arena, is Kirk Hinrich. I will admit he is an upgrade over Bibby, but Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong(LOL) just won’t get it done. Hinrich has not even started in this league at the point in the last couple of years. Another lateral move by the ASG, along with many terrible moves, like resigning Marvin Williams, and Zaza.

Bibby is gone, now please get rid of the worse player on this team for the last couple of years, Marvin Williams. How do you play 29 minutes, against Phoenix (one of the worse defensive teams in the league), and score 2 points? It’s really getting to the point where it’s funny. A 6′11 guy with a 7 foot wing span, who plays small forward, and he can’t give you more than 2 points against Pheonix? I think Larry Drew, has finally realized it and stopped starting him, and continues to take him off the floor at the end of the game.

I’m not feeling LD’s rotations at all. Last night showed me that Teague and Damien should have been receiving more minutes. With the Hawks taking on Hinrich’s $9M contract, it’s highly unlikely we will trade Jamal’s $10.8M expiring contract. His contract is far more valuable to us coming off the books and keeping us under the luxury tax cap, than as a trade chip. With Zaza being held out, it’s almost a certainty he’ll be traded.

With MEvans, Bibby, JoCrawford, and our 1st rd pick already gone, what else can we combine with Zaza to trade? The Hawks willingness to take on Hinrich’s $9M contract, and trade away our 1st rd pick, tells me Sund and the ASG are committed to giving Teague another yr to develop, and that LDrew had better get it done or he’ll join Woody.

We really tightened up our DEF in the 2nd half last night. The trade prevented LDrew from making his favorite stupid move, and that’s putting his 2 biggest DEF liabilities(Bibby/Jamal)on the floor at one time.

Get Al in here minimum….that would be a nice combo with Al.

If you can get Miller/Pryz..then consider that as well..but they are starting to win some. They still don’t have a chance in the West though. They need a rebuild with all their question marks.

Clocks ticking…

Don’t think anything’s gonna happen.

It’s also sad because regardless of what they do today, they’re 2-3 steps behind, not one. So, even if they pulled off a trade to get a big, we’re still short a wingman and a bench.

The way Sund’s trying to make moves, without including members of this “core”, makes it difficult to really make anything meaningful happen. The only way to improve across the board is to dangle Al/Josh around. There’s no other way around it.

My comments are meant to enlighten the people on this blog that are in the same position I was in. Coming to these blogs and exchanging recommendation after recommendation only to see the Hawks get worse and worse.

When the whole world spends years telling pointing out the obvious and you go in the opposite direction, I gotta believe you are doing it on purpose.

So abandon hope everyone and join me in the movement to get new ownership in this town. Because ASG is clearly and deliberately clueless.

“Najeh if you are giving up Powell and Thomas for Evans ok, but I don’t know if I would swap Crawford for Barbosa.”

The idea behind the Jamal trades I keep posting is that Jamal is one good bench player, but his salary is large enough that he can be traded for two good bench players. Barbosa can provide a major chunk of the scoring Jamal provides, and Evans can provide useful minutes on the boards unlike Powell and Etan who provide nothing. The Hawks need depth, and trading one contributor for two contributors helps in that regard.

“Jeje, you say Josh doesn’t like to be told what to do, but he’s always looking to experienced players and trainers to coach him up with his OWN money.

There’s no purpose of moving Horford to PF instead of C, if he’s still not going to be physical on offense.”

This is the best post I have read in a while. We are much more effective right now with Al at the 5 and Josh at the 4. Collins brings nothing other than saying he is seven feet tall. Al needs to realize that he is an above average PF and a great C. I don’t care that he is undersized. Moving Josh from the 4 really hurts us too.

No doubt. If the Hawks can show Dwight a reasonable chance at winning a title here in the summer of 2012, I think he’d give the Hawks serious consideration.

No way that happens without Joe’s contract being unloaded at some point before then though. If the Hawks want a serious shot at Dwight, they have to get rid of Joe and Marvin somehow and go into that summer with Smoove, Horford, and expiring contracts on the payroll.

We’d send them JSmith($11.7M) and Zaza($4.25M) for SCurry($2.91M), ABiedrins($9M)and DGadzuric($7.24M). We could use our $3.63M trade exception to cover SCurry’s salary, and the combined salaries of the other players involved matches.

With these players, we could really create some matchup problems.

SF-MWilliams, PF-AHorford, C-ABiedrins, SG-JJ and PG-SCurry, or
SF-JJ, PF-AHorford, C-ABiedrins, SG-KHinrich and PG-SCurry
The last lineup would leave a bench of PG-JTeague, SG-JCrawford, SF-MWilliams, PF-JPowell, C’s-DGadzuric/JCollins, and SG/SF-DWilkins.

What do you think?

I’d personally start Teague at the point.

I’d go with Teague/JJ/Damien/J.Smith/Horford and then bring Hinrich/Jamal/Marvin off the bench. The bench wouldn’t look too bad. Teague didn’t look too bad in the starting role last night, he could buy us minutes at the begining of games.

This would also keep JC1 out of that PG role.

What a year of head fakes from GM Rick Sund.

1) All the buzz about hiring the new head coach—Avery Johnson as a top candidate. Other candidates bandied about…the result, Sund essentially hires the Varsity Assistant/JV Coach. More on that later. Buzz meter (scale of 1-10 from low to high): 1. Bummer.

2) All the buzz when Sund traded down in the draft to add Jordan Crawford and the first pick of the second round—where a number of raw but reasonably talented bigs were available—only to learn he traded the pick for cash. Buzz meter: 1. Bummer.

3) Now in the past few days all the specualtion about making a splash at the trade deadline…for a team sorely in need of some rejuvenating buzz. Players like D-Will, Harris available. The result is a trade that makes the Hawks tougher defensively—much needed—no question—Hinrich is a solid addition—but is he that mich of a difference maker that he is worth giving up 2 first round picks in Jordan Crawford and what will likely a pick in the late teens this year? Buzz meter: 3. Which might be generous.

Meanwhile let’s talk about the Head Coach and the job he is and isn’t doing. He got the Hawks off to a soaring start—which had much to do with a soft early schedule and to Drew’s credit, he had the team moving the ball on offense for the first time since Joe Johnson arrived in ATL.

Since then…barely an above .500 club that is capable of notching a good win here and there but seemingly more capable of not showing up—especially at home where even the Sixers put on a clinic versus Drew’s hapless Hawks.

Josh Smith—instead of simplifying and maximizing his role of offense—the reverse has happened—and we now have Smith shooting whenever and wherever he pleases. But—”he’s improved his j”—um, maybe—but the whole point is that Smith gives the team the best chance to win when he is closer to the hoop and can score inside, along the baseline or cean up the garbage. Josh still is allowed to camp out at the 3 point line—which shows that the HC can’t provide the discipline the team needs.

Marvin Williams & Jeff Teague—any significant improvement seen there? This is why hiring the JV Coach can mean more of the same. Did anyone see improvement from rookie Jordan Crawford? No—when he was drafted he entered the Woody Pine Zone—and yet another rookie wasted away to nothing in the system. Buzz meter: 0

Al Horford has developed a mid-range jumper—that’s about al the significant improvement anyone has seen. JJ remains like the team itself—interested in playing some nights—not so interested at all on others—and now the JJ effect had spread to Jamal Crawford. Buzz meter: 3

Anyone think Hinrich can come in and get in these guys faces and change the climate?

He’s tough—can he be this tough?

The Buzz meter on Larry Drew: 2

The Buzz meter on the Hawks: 3

Sorry to say—we’ve all been wishing otherwise. Yet, too many head fakes from Rick Sund and we have still be suckering for them.

Guys,

I wont be too hard on Rick for his failure to find more trade deadline deals.

However, he deserves the heat for giving players contracts that severely limited our ability to make deals.

1) Bibby had little trade value. If he was expiring, there would have been more interest, but Rick gave him a 3rd year. Thanks Rick.

2) ZaZa has 2 years and $10 mil left, with little trade value. Thanks Rick.

3) Marvin has 3 years and $23 mil left. Thanks Rick.

Those contracts made it very difficult for the Hawks to make another trade, especially when combined with the fact that they will not go over the luxury tax…

tyger

Overall…dissapointed

Heinrich and Armstrong were a good start, but so very Sund-ish, too close to the vest.

Even with a cupboard full of Marvin, Crawford, ZaZa, Teague the Hawks couldnt pull the trigger on something bigger and better. Probably, because they overpaid for Heinrich – Jordan Crawford and a #1 was too much. They could’ve at least added Yi Jianlian.

To watch the Celtics continually get better despite their bloated, old, taxed-out roster just exemplifies their will to win. Moreover, it highlights how much better they are at playing the managerial game.

Center Kendrick Perkins and a Euro-scrub for Jeff Green!!! Jeff Green is better than both Marvin and Josh! And a perfect fit for them. Those are the young legs they needed to get over the hump. Shaq and Jermaine will resurface come playoff time and the East is a wrap.

But the Hawks go down with a gun full of bullets. The Rockets get Hasheem Thabeet, the Bobcats get Joel Pryzbilla, Portland gets Nazr Mohammed – didn’t we need a BIG???

4:38 pm

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – The last time the Hawks swung a trade deadline deal for a point guard, they got Mike Bibby from Sacramento and proceeded to make the playoffs three years in a row with the veteran big shot artist directing their attack.

That was February 2008. Fast forward to now and the Hawks are still trying to find the right fit at point guard. They traded Bibby, Mo Evans, Jordan Crawford and their 2011 first-round Draft pick to Washington for Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong yesterday.

The Hawks are trying, once again, to solve the point guard problems that have plagued them since Draft night 2005, when they passed up Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Raymond Felton to take Marvin Williams with the No. 2 pick.

“In hindsight, that might be the biggest top three Draft mistake since the Pistons took Darko [Milicic],” an Eastern Conference executive said. “And it’s not just about the player you take, it’s about the player or players you pass up when you make that pick.”

The Pistons passed on Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to take Milicic after LeBron James was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 Draft.

“Anyone that doesn’t think you’ll pay for your Draft mistakes for years to come, just take a look at the Hawks and Pistons right now,” the exec said. “It doesn’t mean you can’t have some success even with those mistakes. But at some point, you will pay for the mistake.”

The Hawks reportedly targeted both Felton and Devin Harris as potential trade pieces but came up empty both times. Bottom line: the Hawks still don’t get the point. Hinrich is yet another short-term answer to a long-term problem. He only has one year left on his deal (at $8 million), meaning the Hawks will have to make decisions about their point guard future all over again this time next year.

Jeff Teague, the Hawks’ second-year point guard, is clearly not ready for a starring role … and might not be anytime soon. He was given every opportunity to supplant Bibby and couldn’t do it. He’s the latest in a long line of supposed point guard solutions that ended up being a problem (Speedy Claxton, Acie Law) for the Hawks.

They’ve tried everything at the point from Royal Ivey to Anthony Johnson to Tyronn Lue to even playing Joe Johnson at point guard during his first season with the team. That’s nine different point guard options spanning two different regimes (former general manager Billy Knight is the man who drafted Marvin Williams, paid Claxton, drafted Law and also traded for Bibby while current general manager Rick Sund is the man who shipped Claxton and Law out of town for Jamal Crawford, drafted Teague and made the deal for Hinrich).

While Hinrich is clearly an upgrade over Bibby, particularly at the defensive end, he still doesn’t solve the Hawks’ seemingly eternal point guard problem.

I’ve been saying this for the past couple of years. Marvin was our worst draft mistake because of who we did not get. We could not have gone wrong in any way, if we just decided to draft a point. I we were so sold on a forward, then the pick should have been Granger almost 15 picks later, not Marvin.

Perkins still has knee issues, and is scheduled to become a FA. Nazr may help them almost as much this year.

Troy M wants to go to Boston, but the Magic desp. want him. Now you know why the C’s were moving all those bigs, trying to clear cap space. Get Troy M with Jeff Green, and they may put them over the top.

Heat want TJ Ford

The Wizards do not want to buy out Bibby unless Bibby gives back alot of money

And the Hawks got alot better with Hinrich. If we would have gotten Miller for ZaZa, we could have made a run. Still might. Alot depends on LD.

But JJ is about to take off, unless he’s hurt. Hinrich will take so much defensive pressure off him.

And with Hinrich, he can handle Jameer and Arenas, where Bibby couldn’t. If the Magic don’t get any help, I think he’s a difference maker in a series with them.

Bring Hinrich, Jamal, and Marvin off the bench. That would give our bench some more punch.

Just my opinion though. I know LD probably won’t let Teague see the court the rest of the season unless we’re talking about garbage time.

Ainge is one smart dude. He has Rondo, Green, Big Baby and Kristic in place to rebuild around once Allen and Garnett are gone.

I can understand that, but did he do it at the expense of winning a ring *this season*?

They’re gonna have to bank on the O’Neal’s to give them good quality minutes in the post if they want to win a ring. I don’t think either of them is the defensive prescence Perkins was.

Mix and match more. The rotations I’m seeing now aren’t that great.

LD’s gotta mix and match scrubs like Zaza and Powell and 2nd unit guys we’re used to seeing with more starters on the floor.

Teague looked better with the starters yesterday. He looks terrible when he’s in there with the likes of Zaza, Powell, and all the other scrubs with no offensive abilities.

Celtics blundered because they can’t gurantee the health of the ONeal squared……Perkins was just coming back and is at minimum an intimidator.
Miami is fired up with that move. Chicago too probably.

Boston might have been the only team to ‘have 2 many big men?’…I didn’t think you could have too many.

Someone tell Larry to make one more move…..Smoove back to the 4 and stay there! It will save at least 5 faulty possessions.

terrell, well, if you’re talking what LD will do, he’s not going to start Crawford anyway.

But you can’t have 0 scoring off your bench. I mean, with that starting lineup, our biggest bench scoring threat would be, what, Marvin??? When he’s playing well, Teague seems to be better at creating for others. Wilkins is a defensive specialist, and our big men on the bench have shown no affinity for scoring.

Honestly, if you’re worried about that, have LD use the “big” lineup and have a rotation like

Hinrich/Jamal/Joe/Josh or Al/Twin
Teague/Damien/Marvin/Josh or Al/Armstrong
Zaza/Etan/Powell

If there is any silver lining about today for the Hawks, it is the Suns-Rockets trade. Giving up a first round pick and Dragic for Aaron Brooks tells me that Phoenix may seriously consider trading Nash this offseason. With both Hinrich and Nash expiring after next season, the Hawks are in a decent position to make a run at him. Of course, this requires a creative GM…

So we essentially got better defensively, at the point, and added another Etan Thomas, Collins type of big man. We still don’t have a back up point guard. If Teague is that guy, then he should have been getting minutes all year. Our problem the past 2 years in the playoffs, regardless of what people think, has not been defense, its been offense. We have not gotten out of the 80’s in both of our sweeps to Orlando and Cleveland. We still dont have a guard who can penetrate, or break the defense down and get in the lane and cause problems. Derron Williams (steak), Aaron Brooks (chicken) were available, but we choose Kirk Hinrich (hot dog), to lead this team, in a city that can’t get fans to come out and support the team. Makes a lot of sense to me (LOL). We still have the great Marvin Williams, and Zaza Pachulia also. Funny how Marvin’s name is always thrown around in all these trade rumors, but none of them pan out. I wonder why? I sure am glad I let my season tickets go this year. Smartest thing I’ve done in a couple of years.

That’s the way he has to play. Don’t worry about turning the basketball over, just keep the pressure on the defense.”

I really don’t understand what people were expecting today.

You guys do realize that the vast majority of these trades, were salary related type moves . . right? And for the Hawks to even get into these discussions, we’d have to trade one of our real good players, or take on a bad contract for a swap of one of our scrubs.

LOL @ Zaza in trade talks. If that Zaza for Miller was true, that would’ve been another bad contract taken on by the Hawks.

Personally, I would’ve loved to make that Bibby deal for a guy like Nazr. This team needed help depth wise on the frontcourt, more than they needed a journeyman PG like Hinrich ( whom people will be so-so on in about 2 weeks ).

Jettison those 3 players does open up a roster spot. So let’s see if Sund/ASG will claim someone off the waiver wire when things shake out. And they can’t halfstep when it goes down either.

I’m laughing at people who think this deal made us worse somehow. We were going to get WHAT in the draft this year? Jordan Crawford shows promise, but is he anything more than Marcus Thornton? Look, we liked him because he came in the game and started taking shots right off the bat. Because he doesn’t hesitate.

But….same people who rant and rave about Jeff Teague’s shooting percentage and defense forget all about Crawford’s shooting percentage (35%) and HIS defense (ummmm…).

So stop acting like we lost a star and a lottery pick. We lost two unknowns, relatively speaking. Hey, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t want to give him up. But I’m not going to say we lost an eventual starter, either.

Mr.Phil

February 24th, 2011

I searched long and hard but I think I have found it.Reason to be optimistic. Read this from John Hollinger:

“They’ll never say so in so many words, but actions speak much louder. And today’s actions said that when playoff time rolls around, Boston thinks it will need perimeter depth, floor spacing and the ability to play smaller a lot more than they’ll need quality low-post defenders.

Translation: Miami is the threat here, not Orlando. And if they survive, it’s San Antonio, not the Lakers, whom they now match up better against. ”

So maybe the Hawks are overlooking Orlando too and trying to get in position to go against the Miami’s, New Yorks and Chicagos of the world bytotally ignoring the lowpost and trying to get better perimeter D. I know it is a stretch, but I am trying here.

J from the A

February 24th, 2011
7:53 pm

Overall, I like the Hinrich-Bibby swap. I’ve always liked Mike and I hate to see him leave, but we all know how badly the Hawks need a decent all-around PG who can defend. In this regard, I think I like Hinrich a little bit better. (In fact, since Hinrich was traded to Washington during the off season, I have been strongly advocating for the Hawks to pull off a trade that would bring Hinrich here.)

I think, without a doubt, this move makes the Hawks better. The real question, though, is: How much better does it make the Hawks? The Hawks’ real Achilles heel has been trying to guard the pick-and-roll. With just this move, the Hawks should be much better at guarding the pick and roll, and have improved their perimeter D in general. However, the Hawks still have other issues that this trade does not even begin to address.

Wabe

northcyde,

Truthfully, I think people are fed up with the status quo. We’re stuck, and we’ve been stuck now going back two playoffs ago (when we got swept by Cleveland).

This team always fails to make meaningful moves that will get us over the top. I wasn’t really expecting any moves today that would get the Hawks over the top, but seriously, I think what you today was people just pure frustrated with the lack of any committment from this organization to get this team over the hump.

I don’t think it’s just frustration from a lack of moves today. It’s frustration that’s been building up since we got whopped in last season’s playoffs. We got whopped, we didn’t really do anything to get much better in the offseason, and then it’s even more frustrating when you see teams within the East making moves geared to get their franchises to the promise land, and all of this happens while the Hawks sit idle.

It’s just frustrating.

You can’t fight vanity, can’t live with it either. Takes too much out of you. So Kirk has to deal with ISO Joe an that “smoove” fella, hoggin and poundin and trying to make the electryfying pass that will be talked about for years. Even when on the company charter, there should be no gambling and shenanigans going on. It is a business trip type atmosphere, I hope.
There is a Championship Culture in everything you do and the manner in which things are done. No profanity and horse playing should be going on, when you are on a Championship Quest! Which we, my friends, are NOT. Like Najeh said, we need some ole’ vet dogs in here.

That culture I speak of and yearn for, starts with The Eight Owners.

Saw both LUE and HINRICH in D.C. Comparing the two is lood-i-crus in my opinion. HINRICH will be an upgrade over BIBBY hands down. The guy is tough and smart. He is not as good a spot-up shooter as MIKE, but in every other facet of the game, it’s like comparing diamonds [HINRICH] to glass [BIBBY]. He is however a combo-guard better suited to the two slot than the one, but he’ll not fail you on the defensive end. Only the elite one’s and two’s will get consistant penetration from the perimeter against ATLANTA the rest of this season.

We beat them without Joe and Bibby at the point(The 40th ranked PG)

I think the move that should have been made is to trade Jamal (this past offseason) for 2 solid bench players. But Rick waited, and was forced to make a desperation move.

superior – Huh? We tried to get Felton (black). We tried to get Harris (black). We then could go after Kirk or Ramon. I wanted both. But the Wiz’s were the ones that would take Bibby and Mo’ off our hands. And Sund had to do that for LD, because LD was going to play them regardless.

We got the best available that met the criteria, white or black. I hate racism. From any side.

Now back to basketball

Cavs are trying to buy out Leon Powe. I wouldn’t mind getting him,

I would sign Da’Sean Butler yesterday, but it doesn’t look like we’re going that route

But if Hinrich is healthy, he will transform this team positively. Just watch. I like Bibby, but he was holding us back

Hi all,
The only stopping Teague from playing is not your coach. Its his teamates.
They have lost confidence in him and no matter what they say publicly its all over the locker room.

Teague knows it.He does have his supporters but now that bibby is gone,he has gotten fingers pointing at him saying that he better step up or else.

Jamaal is bored. And he is thinking about next year, and where he will sign during the offseason.
Its too late for the hawks to offer him anything now because he is ready to leave.

Horford and Joe are even closer now than ever before.
They would like to see where the hawks are going and are planning on doing to get more talent surrounding them, and they do have a speed dial to one of the ASG Owners, and he listens. He listens.

Im going to say something that will shock all of you.
This team still has the chance to get deep into the playoffs if only they play the way your coach sets them up to play. But when you have an out of control player like Josh Smith, and the 2 biggest mouthpieces in the locker room gone(bibby, evans, yes that evans mo evans),then this ship is gonna have a bumpy ride on a tidal wave!!

One more thing,Drew is very high and optimistic about how far this team will go.
He is not a bad coach. He has been an assistant among some great coaches.
Coaches talk, they learn, they teach, and just like doctors they still practice.

He will have this team suprisingly ready come playoffs time.

The NBA fans and the media and you atlanta fans are all asking why didn’t the hawks do more.

Coaches are wondering what is it that this 18 yr. assistant has up his sleeves.

You never wondered why he has Thomas and Collins on the bench a lot unless they are playing a big starting 5?

Or why up until last night Wilkens does not get a lot of playing time?(yes we all know about the two 10 day contracts).

Questions that you think that an 18 year assistant coach should know.

delusional? high? crazy? in order for josh to be the player he was last year it might help for him to stop taking so many damn jumpers. joe can’t function properly in this offense. jamal is a black hole and can’t find any ways to contribute when his shot is broke.

last year although lacking any offensive creativity had a little more backbone (except the playoffs) they fought hard to have a home court advantage. they disguised their lack of perimter d by switching. woody basically forced josh to live in the paint and for the most part good things happened. can’t leave out that joe was playin for a contract. i keep sayin it stop goin to the games and this ownership will be broke by the end of the year!

The ASG hired BK (nobody was pleased with his work), then they hired Rick Sund (I’m not impressed with his work either), hired Woody (which was ok for the first 4 years, but then everything fell down hill), then the ASG wouldnt let BK fire Woody when he wanted to, and then then the ASG offered BK a 1 year extension despite his shortcomings, and then they allowed Rick to promote Woody’s longtime assistant because we needed a change.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. It’s never ever been about anything BUT the money with this group. However, in light of that, I think we did okay. Even if we only rented the services of a tough combo guard for a temporary amount of time.

The fact is, if you’re not committed to winning, you’re not committed to spending. And if that’s the case, then you need to be a wizard with the draft, and with free agency and trade. Even then…you simply have to spend.

Unfortunately, Hawks ownership and management are none of the above.

But…I like the trade. Even if it meant giving up Jordan Crawford, who I think has some potential. That draft pick was worth nothing, if you ask me. Who would we have gotten in this draft? Last time I looked, the Hawks valued the $3 million they made off of trading Damion James for Jordan Crawford, more than they valued Jordan Crawford. If that wasn’t the case, they’d have never made that trade. Heh…

Ray. I would say that was the safe trade for Sund and ASG. Not sure it will make us any better even this year. Definitely gave up too much future for him IMO. Again, I like Hinrich but we will miss Bibby and I believe Crawford will be a good one. Renting Hinrich for one year won’t put us any closer to winning even a first round series, much less a second. I think it was a move to appease the bloggers. Kind of like the LD move was anti Woody, this one was anti-Bibby. They can now say they listened to the fans. I’m not sure it will translate into victories. Sure Bibby was slow but he also kept us in a lot of games when the rest of the “so-called” superstars were laying eggs. We’ll see.

Was I seeing things? I thought I saw Teague continually feeding Al Horford close to the rim while J. Smoove stayed close to the 3 point line asking for the ball. Once Mr. J Smoove moved closer to the basket, he was fed the ball. I think Teague was sending J Smoove a message, you want the ball, get closer to the basket. We need to have Marvin coming off the bench and, like it or not, let J Smoove play 3 with Armstrong (I hope he got game and gets to play center) at center and Al at the 4. Jamal can back Joe (we’re stuck with him and his shot missing @ss for some time, I guess) and Wilkins seems to be playing better than Mo Evans and he and Marvin can share minutes. Teague can be the backup PG and I hope his increasing PT allows him to get more consistent on D and driving the ball. J Smoove, if you had better hands, you could drive, but your mind works faster than your hands and you want to drive and leave the ball behind. ZaZa is no longer an asset to this team, anyone can come in an commit 2 or 3 fouls in 5 minutes of play. I am beginning to feel the same way about Josh Powell. Ok, we need a couple of them for practices, but we need better players coming off the bench.

The Truth

February 24th, 2011
11:57 pm

One glaring problem with the Hawks management is they don’t see real value in players until they become a retail commodity. But by then, because of their excessive frugal spending, acquiring such a player in the open market becomes impossible. This organization has completely lost all confidence in its ability to draft quality players to the point they would rather give a pick away then to be face with selecting another bust. Unless a team is in a big market, their only chance of winning a championship is building through the draft. With overly agressive agents consulting these rising superstar players, they will always steer their clients away from small markets. The prime rib will always follow the big money. JJ is a special case, he’s a wannabe who impersonated a superstar and got the gig in in small market hot-lanta. Now that our draft legs have been cut from under us, our chances of landing a quailty player through FA is slim to none. With our current budget and constraint, just like last yr, our MLE will not be used. So our “heavy-hitting” this off-season will be vet min shopping during the FA shopping spree season.

LD must have known long ago like we the Fans knew long ago that Bibby was not the answer at PG, he was not just arriving in Atlanta, he was on Mike Woodson staff and saw what Bibby did from very close range for two years. Despite that knowledge he failed to develop Teague who is far superior defensively and instead slow his development, and we can only hope his confidence has not been shaken too badly.
Did Jordan Crawford ever get a chance to show his talent? Or was he not worthy of the ist round draft pick?
The Hawks have been in need of a PG since Mookie left town, and yet they passed on Tinsley and others, but was most unbelieveable when they passed on Deron Williams and Chris Paul in 2006. Teague at Wake was comparable to Lawson at NC who is now playing in Denver. The difference in their games must be wider now, as he has been getting playing time and is developing in Denver, whereas Teague hardly gets into any Hawks game. Heinrich will be an improvement, but should not further delay the devlopment of Teague. Heirich was replaced in Chicago for the quicker Rose and in Dc for the quicker Wall. Teague if developed properly has the quickness to defend those guys.
With Jordan Crawford exit, and if Teague was not to make it, Rick Sund would be 0-2. What would that tell the fans about his ability to improve this Franchise?

Ok alot of folks dont like us giving up 2 draft picks (last years and this years) for kirk. Well from my understanding he has 2 years on his deal now with us!! Bibby also had two. Jamals is out after this year. He wont come back to us for scraps plus some other teams want him like the nets. Marvin will be in his last year of his contract at the start of 2012 so thats like 8 mil of a bad contract someone will take to help them make moves!!! Those two draft picks is 4 years of salaries each that we dont have to pay now!! They both would have been around 3 mil a year unless we really suck next year!!

So looking at it at the start of 2012 there will be atleast 15mil a year off the books with a chance to get marvins 8 off as well.

Why would howard come hear? One he is pissed at the magic. We now have a deeper big man bench than they do and thats sad!!! He wants to play at home like melo and ofcourse he and josh are good friends!!. The catch to all of this is, as its been since mookie left, we need a pg. D. will has said he will not sign anything untill 2012 which means he will see who has the best options for him!! CP3 and parker will be out there as well but chris will go to the knicks and Id rather dwill over parker anyday!!!

So is this far fetched, I dont think so and I do think thats what Sund is doing!!!

Samuel,

I agree that this is a safe move for Rick Sund. Unfortunately for us fans, he likes the safe moves. However, I disagree with the rest of your post.

“I think it was a move to appease the bloggers. They can now say they listened to the fans”.

With Bibby gone, do you think that translates to more people going to the games? I dont think so. They need to win more home games for that to happen, and since when do teams make trades because of what the fans want?

I dont think the ASG is all that concerned about what the fans want. If they were concerned about the fans, then they would do a better job marketing and PR wise, and would make better moves over the offseason to get fans interested.

Kind of like the LD move was anti Woody, this one was anti-Bibby..

If by anti-Bibby you mean upgrading one of the most important positions on the court, and trading a guy who was horrible at defending dribble penetration, a guy who forced one HC to switch all the time, the guy who his teamates would get frustrated at becuase they have to cover for him consistently, a guy who was in a shooting slump the last few games, a guy who his coach said is wearing down, a guy who wont be able to guard Rondo, Jameer, Rose, Chauncey and the other PGs we might see in the playoffs…is that your definition of anti Bibby?

Sure Bibby was slow but he also kept us in a lot of games when the rest of the “so-called” superstars were laying eggs. .

Which “so-called” superstars are you referring to? And who calls these guys superstars?

Bibby helped us win a lot of games, but he also cost us alot of games. And sometimes when he scored 10, he gave up 15.

I think the trade for Bibby was very important to helping the Hawks get to the playoffs the last 3 seasons. But it was time for an upgrade. I wish they would have made a better trade, or made some other trades, but I think the Bibby trade was just to give the team a chance to play better (and they had lost 5 of their last 6 too).

The most important parts on any team are the Defense up the middle, Center and PG. We addressed one of these (although we could have gotten D Wiliams if we had sweeetened the pot). How often do you get a chance to get the best PG in the league and we passed on him for a second time. When will we ever learn? KH is probably a good 2nd alternative. He plays defense and is an excellnt passer which Bibby did neither. As for the center position, you have Boston willing to part with Perkins. He would have been a perfect fit. He’s tough as hell and does not back down from anyone. Would have allwed Horford to play PF. Most importantly, we are still stuck with Marvin. Just a reminder of our past mistakes. We should have shipped him off to anyone just to get the idea of our past off of this team. Until we get tough in the middle, we will remain stuck in the middle of the east pack. This team is improved but will remain mediocre until the center position is addressed. Also, Boston is toast. They just rid themselves of what made them different from the pack. If they think Shack and JO are going to save them, they are in for a short post season.

OB,
The only thing that will translate into more fans is winning. Obviously, many fans thought Bibby was our main problem. That remains to be seen.
So you think Hinrich and Teague will be able to guard Rose,Rondo, Billips or a healthy Jameer. I don’t think so. These guys are unguardable.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that Bibby was getting old and should have had his minutes reduced by whose fault is that. I just don’t see where getting an aging Hinrich will put us any closer to competing on the next level and we gave up a #1 pick and a promising young scorer to boot. I see that as a step back.

Swing a deal with a Western team after the Perkins trade. When you want to win, anything is possible. We had Marvin, Crawford as bait. What did we do? Nada

O'Brien

February 25th, 2011

Samuel,

Teague wont be able to guard them either, but I dont even know if JJ can guard them, and as long as Bibby was here, JJ would be the guy on those PGs, and that takes away his offensive game, becuase he spends so much energy on defense sometimes.

At least with Hinrich, we can let him guard them (even if he doesnt stop them,he just needs to make them work harder). And that will at least keep JJ a little fresher because he wont have to guard them, and our bigs should be in a better position because they wont have to switch and rotate as much.

Depending on the playoff matchups, Hinrich might only be a minor improvement. But before we get to the playoffs, we need to finish the regular season, and the way things were going (we’ve lost 5 out of 6), we could easily end up in 6th (right now, we are 4 games in front of the Knicks).

By making this trade, maybe we get enough regular season victories to clinch the 4th seed and homecourt advantage in the first round. And if we play Orlando…who knows what can happen. They still dont have a backup Center, and we’ve played them close so far.

As for what we gave up, I dont mind the first round pick in next year’s draft, because from what I’ve read, it might be a weak draft. However, I agree that it would have been nice to keep Jordan Crawford. He had the potential to develop into a poor man’s Jamal.

But keep in mind a cheap vet could also be a poor man’s Jamal (look at what we got from Flip when he was here). TMac coming off the bench could be a poor man’s Jamal, so I think the Hawks can find cheap vets to fill that role.

The problem is ASG and Rick need to be smart at what they do, have good scouting etc. And so far, they have not been very good at that (imo).

It doesn’t matter how great your bait is…if the fish isnt biting, there is nothing you can do. Which GM in their right mind would give up good pieces for Marvin (who has 3 years, $22 mil left after this season) and ZaZa (who has looked horrible this year, and still has 2 years $10 mil left after this season).

I havent been impressed by Rick either, but its hard to blame him for not finding somebody to take Marvin and ZaZa. Blame him for giving Marvin and ZaZa the contracts they have.

I just realized you said Marvin and Crawford. My bad. Now that, I agree with. Crawford should have been traded over the offseason. We resigned JJ, and drafted Jordan, and had Mo Evans, so why pay $10.8 mil for another expiring SG, when the rest of the bench is weak?

Rick does deserve alot of heat for that.

New ownership in the works?
10:16 am February 25, 2011, by Chris Vivlamore

At this point, here is what I can report on the ongoing Thrashers ownership issue. I caution that there is still a lot of reporting to do but according to people familiar with the situation there is an investment group that is progressing in an effort to buy the Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena and will keep the Thrashers in Atlanta.

There is one main investors with others in the group, some of whom are from Atlanta. The group is not only interested in purchasing the three properties but there is a “development element” to the deal, possibly involving the area around the arena.

The group met with with officials from both the NBA and the NHL this week.

The Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena have been for sale and groups have expressed interest in buying the Thrashers and moving them to another city. Canadian cities Winnipeg, Quebec and Hamilton have long been rumored to be a possible destination.

As far as a timetable on such a deal, according to sources it would take at least a month to complete their due diligence on the proposal and another month to complete negotiations.

This is not the group involved with Atlanta native Stephen Rollins. That group is said to still be interested but a formal bid has not been made at this point.

I am continuing to work on this story in my best effort to make sure it is 100 percent accurate. Understand that I am only reporting that a new group has expressed interest in purchasing the teams and arena from the Atlanta Spirit and is progressing in its effort. There is a long way to go but it appears that the situation has progressed beyond the point of someone “kicking the tires.”

Stay tuned.

* Will LD Give Teague the minutes he deseves and has earned? This really should be his team now btw.

* Will Jamal Resign? For How much? Well he leave us with no bench? Thanks Rick?

* Will Jordan Crawford become what some of us beleive he has the potential to be?

* Will Washingtion Get a stud with that #1 pick?

* We got an extra big….for Our matchup with Orlando I guess?

* Is Hilton Armsrong Trash?

* Will Rick get rid of Marvin and Zaza this offseason and get us a Legit Center (Kaman or DeAndre Jordan) as well as a Legit SF (I really like Aminu, Tayshun Prince, or Igoudala)?

Fan House covers the trade:

I asked Horford if it might be time for him to maybe recruit some guys in the offseason, and start telling them how great Atlanta is.

“Maybe,” Horford said with a laugh. “Definitely you want to compete with the Bostons and the Miamis, so you have to do something.”

February 25th, 2011
10:56 am

Early in the season when Zaza was struggling (which lately has been every game) LD should have given Etan more opportunities to earn minutes. By not grooming Etan, LD is now faced with the prospect of playing Zaza even though officially LD wants no part of him. Unless Hilton Armsrong is really a stud, this will happen, how sad. But that’s LD fault

However, there is still time to turn this ship around and salvage the reminding season into something respectable. If Captain Kirk can translate on paper and gel with his new teammates then maybe something good can emerge. This will be predicated on LD willingness to change the tempo of the game to suit Hinrich’s style which is much different than Bibby slow turtle style. When making a major lineup change as the Hawks just did, anything is likely to happen during the transitional period as the team rebuilds itself. The new addition will certainly put LD coaching on display. We shall see

Yawn. Two “ownership groups” with some members of the group based in Atlanta want to buy the Hawks and Thrashers. Where have we heard this before? Let me guess — they will buy the team, trade for some second rate star in a few years, one of the owners will try to veto it, they will sue each other for five years, lose a ton of money, and blame fans for not showing up.

Why can’t some billionaire from Atlanta step in and buy the team. Doesn’t Tyler Perry have a billion dollars by now off those god awful movies and that stupid ass TV show?

From the washington post;

”According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Mike Bibby is upset about leaving a playoff team in Atlanta to join a lottery team in Washington and is interested in receiving a buyout.

But while the topic has been discussed internally, a league source said Bibby would have to make a huge sacrifice of what’s left of the $5.8 million he is owed this season, and the $6.4 million he will receive next season.

Since that appears unlikely, Bibby is expected to be in uniform in Miami on Friday. Bibby will wear the No. 00, after he switched from his original choice of No. 0, which happened to belong to another guy who made three all-star teams and won a playoff series in that uniform. Bibby has worn No. 10 his entire career, but it is retired for Earl Monroe. .

If Bibby got number 0, he would have the same number as Teague. Interesting. But I totally understand him being upset about going from ATL to a team like Washington.

That is the same reason why I think Hawks could have gotten away with working out a 2 year deal when he signed his new deal. How many playoff teams were looking for a starting PG that offseason, and of those teams, how many of them were going to give him a 3rd year?

I hope he plays really well in Washington (although that will probably lead to some Hawks fans saying we shouldnt have traded him). Maybe his expiring contract will be traded to a contender next season.

It’s amazing that as poor of an offensive game that Marvin had, he was the only guy with a positive +/- rating in the Suns game. He was +8.

And after re-watching that game, I understand why.

LD made a tactical error by staying with Damien down the stretch, instead of coming back with Marvin to close the game. The Suns put an extremely big team, that could also shoot the ball, on the floor. Smith was closing out poorly on those big shooters all game. Of course we couldn’t slow down dribble penetration. The switches didn’t work, because we were too small at the 3 spot.

The best defensive squad we can put out on the floor HAS to include Marvin, no matter how poor of an offensive game he’s having, because he does at least give us the height to guard big perimeter shooters.

Jamal did his job by getting us back in the game with his offense. But either he or Damien should’ve gone out of that game, to give us the proper defensive balance against that big team the Suns put out on the floor.

Looking at the popcornmachine.com Game Flow, the Suns basically used 2 big runs to win that game. A 24 – 7 run in the 2nd quarter to blow the game open. And a 13 – 3 run to close the game out.

The Hawks had runs of 14 – 6 . . 6 – 0 . . 7 – 2 . . 7 – 2 . . and 14 – 3 in the game. Only the 6 – 0 run toward the end of the 1st quarter came without Marvin on the floor.

Marvin was giving us jack squat on offense, so I see why Drew took him out. But coming with the lineup he did, disrupeted the defensive flow of the game at the end. Once that game got tight, you go with your best defensive group, and ask JJ, Smith, and Horford to take you home offensively.

northcyde,

My memory of the 4th quarter is that Damien was guarding Nash (until a switch) for the most part. How does putting Marvin in help that? Do you think Marvin could stop Nash more than Damien?

northcyde,

By the way, I’d NEVER argue with taking Crawford out in crunch time unless he’s having one of those “in the zone” games that he has 3-4 times a year.

By and large, dude gives up WAY more than he can offset with his scoring.

I guess the one good thing about trading our draft pick for this summer is that our owners are still holding $3M from this past draft that we can buy a late round pick with.

northcyde,

That has been one of LD’s problems all year. Going with offense over defense. That’s why he would continuously play Jama and Bibby at the same time. Offense.

The bad thing is he would do that even when we are leading down the stretch.

This was from MC’s blog on July 1, 2010 after the Hawks offered JJ the max deal.

ASG rejects the view expressed by David Aldridge and others that a potential sell of the team influenced the max offer to J.J. Michael Gearon Jr. has insisted that he is not interested in selling his share.MC.

Based on what we’ve seen (Thrashers being up for sale for years (and possibly moving), unloading Phillips, potential buyers for Hawks and Thrashers being mentioned today), how are we ever supposed to take the ASG serious, or believe them?

LOL, that’s 3M is already spent covering LD 2 yr. salary.

Sund just completed his latest interview on 680…glowing about Kirk and what he brings to this team…he talked about how low we are in the categories of steals/loose balls.

He used that prime word again, and started rattling off names.

I don’t recall him mentioning Bibby at all….he said it was tough to give up JC2, but was necessary to get the deal done. And that other 1st rounder he gave up? Not a big deal….I agree with him based on his and the team’s history of draft picks.

Now, he says the players have to be accountable on the court. He talked up the 2 1st round playoff wins the last 2 years, and the learning experience/wounds we picked up from Cleveland & Orlando.

Not a very good interview as Kincade and Belue never have anything of controversy to discuss. They just let GM Rick give his opinion.

Thanks for the si link.

Samuel, they are saying the same thing I mentioned this morning.

Nabbing Hinrich doesn’t make the Hawks a title contender, but it feels like the kind of move that could have a bigger impact on the court than many anticipate. Start with this: Hinrich can defend point guards. Very well.. And that addresses the main problem with Atlanta’s defense, which ranks about average despite the Hawks’ having faced the easiest schedule in the league.

It isn’t just that Bibby can’t defend point guards; it’s the degree to which the Hawks have had to compensate for the 32-year-old’s defensive issues. They’ve had to tire out Johnson by assigning him point guard duty. They’ve gone to zone defenses that haven’t really worked. They’ve switched too often, though less so this season under rookie coach Larry Drew. .

Sooo glad Teague will get to start..HECK, he needs to start the rest of the season..Let Hinrich & Jamal come off the bench..that way, Hinrich can sub for Teague while Jamal sub for Marvin to move Joe to 3!! It works while keeping Defense-minded players on the court at all times!!

Starting Teague the rest of the way will give him the necessary confidence he needs to improve on finishing around the basket and/or drawing the foul like he did against Phoenix the other night in the paint when he had no where else to go. That’s how Rondo, Wade, & LeBron draws SO MANY FOULS A GAME in the league when they are just TRYING TO DRAW THE FOUL while not having a good angle to score. He’s an excellent free throw shooter that can allow him to increase his scoring every game, making him an instant upgrade over Bibby since he never penetrated nor goes to the free throw line nearly enough the way a PG should do. Teague, make your coach and us fans proud tonight and the rest of the season..ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE NOW, THIS IS YOUR TEAM!! (have that mentally every night u step on the court!!!

After watching Hilton Armstrong on Youtube,I think we may have gotten the better end of the deal even though we added Jordan Crawford in it. I think he ends up a starter, IF he can do what he did on that highlight reel of him.I hope he plays ahead of Zaza.

In other news, Detroit players named Rip Hamilton,Tracy McGrady,Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace seem like they dont want to be in Detroit by missing out on shoot arounds this morning.Wonder if some will get buyouts,Possibly Wallace and Mcgrady can come to us if we drop some of those D league Centers..

You guys are hilarious with the excuse making

Everytime we play the Suns its always how we cant stop Nash because no guards can stay in front of them and this time we got a excellent job on on the perimeter from the guards but Gortat and frye CHANNING FRYE KILLED US and we still try and blame the guards .

Im so glad Hinrich is here because it will take less than 5 games before he exposes Al and Josh as the lazy defenders they are who used Bibbys defense as excuse this past year.

At some point Al and Josh are not gonna have to step up and become forces for this team to go anywhere. Im tired of seeing the lack of intensity from these two. Do these care ? do these games mean anything ? have we given them anything to play for ? afterall no matter what we will simply blame someone else or say wait until next year .

Theyve got the fat paychecks and small market team with ugly chick syndrome too afraid to place expectations on them and they know it . They are in baller heaven right now .
