Atlanta Hawks: Lakers 104, Hawks 80

This was just one of several mismatches for the Hawks. (AP Photo)

Los Angeles–If I know my blog people, I figure you’d rather hear about trade chatter (some hope for the future) than a recounting of this debacle (a depressing reminder of the team’s stasis).

  • So, OK . . . Yes, Kirk Hinrich is a possibility and Ramon Sessions remains in play. No to Devin Harris (who is probably headed elsewhere) and Raymond Felton (whom the Nuggets apparently aren’t looking to move).
  • Basically, it seems like the Hawks have called about every decent-to-good point guard who might be available. Of course it will take more than a new point guard to fix what ailed the Hawks tonight.
  • The Lakers were smarter, faster and tougher than the Hawks.
  • “I can go down competing, but we are not competing at our highest level it’s frustrating,” Al said.
  • These beatdowns are becoming more commonplace. That’s four Ls in five, with three of them by at least 15 points. It’s also Atlanta’s fifth loss by at least 20 points this season.
  • The Hawks are back to their habit of getting down big and staying there. “We didn’t play with an edge; we gave them too much respect,” J.J. said. “We didn’t have that fire, that competitive nature that we need. It’s frustrating, man. I don’t know what to do.”
  • They could start by not continuing to jack up jump shots when they a) are challenged and/or b) aren’t making them. Both things happened against the Lakers, yet the Hawks kept firing away.
  • Certainly it’s no easy task to score inside against all that Lakers size but it’s not as if the Hawks ever made a focused effort to try it.
  • “I don’t think we went to the rim enough,” L.D. said. “I just thought we settled, which is starting to be a pattern with us. When you fall into that type of pattern when you are not making shots you’re going to struggle. We went 1-for-15 from the three, yet we settled for the three. We have to have more basketball savvy than that.”
  • The Hawks got handled 54-32 on the boards. Los Angeles collected an astounding 42 of Atlanta’s 62 misses (not counting “team” rebounds) with Gasol and Bynum combining for 21 of those.
  • “We didn’t play with physicality,” Drew said. “I thought they really banged us in the half court. I don’t think we responded very well to it.”
  • This game showed the limitations of the big lineup. Twin is a good position defender but he can’t hang on the boards against the better big men. The Hawks actually had more success (relatively, at least) going small with Al working outside against Gasol and Bynum.
  • The Lakers made 24 of 48 shots before emptying the bench in the fourth quarter. Kobe (20 points on 11 shots) didn’t even have to do anything special in his 26 minutes. Heck Shannon Brown took it to the Hawks and Joe Smith had three blocked shots.
  • “They dominated on both ends,” Al said. “We really have some soul-searching to do as a team. It’s discouraging. We had a great practice yesterday, and to come out like that, it’s frustrating.”
  • The Hawks botched five fast break chances by my count. Smoove threw a couple passes that smashed the backboard.
  • Here was one inept fast break sequence: Mo fumbled the ball away while standing under the rim and missed a layup; Josh Powell tried to put it back only to get his shot pinned by Joe Smith, leading to an alley-oop dunk by Devin Ebanks.
  • The Lakers presented Powell with his Lakers championship ring before the game.
  • “I actually want to see it,” Al said. “I kind of saw it from far away. I know what it’s like to win. I did it on the college level. We are hungry for that. We are hungry to be in that position and we are not there yet.”

Hawks shopping Bibby, eye Hinrich

The Atlanta Hawks are working hard to move point guard Mike Bibby(notes), and Washington’s Kirk Hinrich(notes) has emerged as a real target for them. Denver’s Raymond Felton(notes) and Portland’s Andre Miller(notes) also are looming large on the Hawks’ radar, sources say. The Hawks have inquired about the Nets’ Harris, but there are no deal possibilities there, sources said.

The Hawks are trying hard to rid themselves of the three years and $23.2 million left on Marvin Williams’(notes) contract after this season. “For what he makes, it’s a tough sell,” said one NBA coach whose team desires a forward who can score the ball.

The Hawks also have explored trying to trade guard Jeff Teague(notes) and swingman Maurice Evans(notes) to the Cleveland Cavaliers for guards Ramon Sessions(notes) and Manny Harris(notes), one source said.

Id rather have Nique coach this team, Almost! We were built to play small, to play big is not what got us where we are(if we had Dwight that’s a diff story), but I due admit playing small Isn’t that affective with Bad pg guard play, Almost any PG available at this point would save this team and boost them up… It all depends on how you look at it Sessions or Hinrich would change the whole dynamic of this team, but CP3 or DWill would really change it, but if that’s out of reach for now, go with one of the 1st 2 or Brooks, to live in the present because with better PG play y’all will remember why were built to play small, I wish Mo Evans was Battier though & I wish JC2, SY, or Teague really got some burn, I also wish Etan would play more if his heart could take it if not cut him, But I say just get a fast smart PG and sign Eddy Curry when he gets cut, I’m just saying

Why don’t we trade for both Ramon Sessions and Kirk Hinrich? We would then have a starting/backup PG one with defensive presence and one who could penetrate and create shots for teammates.

Sounds like the best plan to me.

@MichaelCunningham should I spend money to see the Hawks on Friday? My actual question is does the team at all seem to be getting their stuff together or are they just drinking too much of their own koolaid.

Seriously Joe, Al, and Sund were talking about this is the time to prove themselves and they have only proven that nothing has changed.

Get rid of everybody on this team except for Al Horford starting with Coach Woody light. Horford is the only one on this team that seems to give a damn. One would think that Joe Johnson would have enough professional pride that he would feel very much shame, if not a guilty conscience, to average 10 points or more less per game than he did before he broke the bank with his Mega Millions contract. (It has to be Mega Millions because he surely doesn’t appear to have any balls, Power Balls or otherwise.) It seems like he is getting paid this year at a rate of $150,000 per point scored.

This team was fun to watch once upon a time when they gave a crap. Now, they just make me want to barf.

“We didn’t play with an edge; we gave them too much respect,” J.J. said. “We didn’t have that fire, that competitive nature that we need. It’s frustrating, man. I don’t know what to do.”

Hey, JJ, how about you. If the rest of the team doesn’t have the fire, why don’t you lead by example, Captain. Is your elbow still bothering you, do you have something in your eye, does your tummy hurt? All of the top players are almost always on and when you look in the box scores, they have the most points, rebounds, assist …….or whatever. I don’t see Kobe, D Wade, Ray A are the other highly paid, highly touted shooting guards going through the kind of slump you are having. After holding out to get the max contract you had to know that almost as much as our much maligned point guard, you would be under a lot of scrutiny.

This trip is going to be brutal and like Al said, “We can go down competing, but we are not competng at our highest level”. And did anyone ask Smoove after the game who he was trying to pass the ball to slamming it off the backboard, twice? I am not optimistic that a trade of any significance will be made at this point. Only someone who is probably a backup who wants to start will want to come here. Kirk Hinrich or Ramon Sessions are not the answers to the point guard situation.

The ASG are waiting out after both the Lakers and Phoenix’s game to make there final trades ideas. I think they needed to make sure they are making the right decision on who should stay and who should go. Based on these last 5 games, Marvin, Josh, Bibby, & Jamal ALL should be heading to 2 different teams for a offensive & defensive minded PG (Felton or Hinrich) and a decent to great C (Andrew Bynum or Ben Wallace) with bench fillers included.

Dismantle this team immediately, keep Al and Joe. They claim they can’t understand why the fans don’t come out to the arena and support them, let me give you a few reasons why:

very seldom play with any intensity
when they start losing a gm by double digits, they just simple quit
Lose gms by 41, 35, 24, 18, 20 pts and more. But they want fans to be excited about them
They’re is a reason why that cannot pack philips arena, when six million people live in the metro
This ownership is the worst in all of sports
Give us a good product, give us our money’s worth, we’ll packet that arena very home gm

A team loss last night, but I think LD shoulders a lot of the blame.

“I just thought we settled, which is starting to be a pattern with us”.LD .

See, its quotes like this that make me doubt LD, and I’m wondering if he is overmatched. He said it is starting to be a pattern. It started being a pattern from when Woody was here.

Players get jumper happy, dont drive to the hoop, and hang their heads when the going gets tough. They have been doing it all year, but yet LD said it is starting to be a pattern? C’mon Man!

And what else does he need to see to make some kind of change? I know his options are limited, but the status quo is not working. Its insanity what he is doing. Trotting the same team, the same rotation out there game after game, and hoping for a different result.

Start Jamal instead of Bibby, start Teague instead of Bibby, give JC2 some of Jamal’s minutes, give Damien some of Marvin’s minutes, play Marvin at SF with Al at PF (bring Josh off the bench)…at least try something different, anything.

And if it doesnt work, at least you can say you tried.

As for the players, lots of blame to go around too. Just to name a few…

Josh: 1-7 on jumpers outside the paint (I’m glad LD is getting him to establish himself inside the post first..SMH at LD).

Bibby: 16 minutes, 0-3 from the field, 0 points, 0 assists (could Teague have done any worse in 16 mins)?

Powell: 10 shot attempts in 15 minutes (he was 2-10). Was he trying to impress the Lakers?

Marvin: Up and down as usual, ZaZa being ZaZa…and the list goes on.

What was interesting is the Hawks only had 6 turnovers, but the Lakers had 18. And we still lost by 24 (and would have been worse if LA hadnt emptied their bench).

So glad we kept the “core” together and signed JJ to a max contract.

Prior ownership blew up the Mookie-Smitty-Dikembe team for inability to progress past the first round. But, at least that team was enjoyable to watch. This team is both mediocre and aggravating to watch, and all overpaid and thus untradable – except Horford.

What a nightmare.

Just trade Josh Smith already.

When he plays at the 3, he refuses to penetrate the lane and just settles for jumpshots.

Horford playing at the 4 for this team is far more important in the long-run than anything Smoove brings (he hardly blocks shots anymore as we saw in the stat)

The sad part about getting blown out in the last 2 playoffs, presently watching the teams above us get better, upgrade their rosters and knowing that we probably have next to no shot at contending is that when you think about it we might as well be the Sixers or Bobcats. Just in the playoffs to be there.

….might as well make some rotation changes or trades to see if SOMETHING works.

I for one will never understand the coaches love affair with Mike Bibby.

As everyone here continues to point out, can Teague really be that much worse? I mean really, Bibby can go game after game logging the type of stat line you saw him log last night, and we’ll still see nothing change.

It would’ve made more sense to let Teague take his lumps and at least build some confidence with extended minutes through the season. I don’t care how many mistakes the kid makes…

Plain and simple, his upside > anything Mike Bibby still has left in the tank.

The same goes for Jordan Crawford. This kid has upside, but coach just makes these rooks bottle it up for another season. Same ish as last season. I know neither of them is probably ready RIGHT NOW to jump in there and play as close to mistake-free basketball as Drew probably wants, but that’s no reason to leave them rotting on the bench, especially when the rest of your team makes mistake after mistake.

You could even go with a starting lineup featuring Teague, Jamal, and Joe. Bring JC2 off the bench.

It’s astonishing how it’s clear this team isn’t built to win right now, but no initiative is taken to develop guys for the future. It doesn’t have to be the long-term future. Had coach given this rooks solid minutes throughout the course of the season, I’m sure their impact would’ve been as great as a Mike Bibby or a Mo Evans. But, we continue to roll with the status quo, and Drew maybe doing it because he’s still got something to prove, so he’s not trying to waste his time developing youngsters when he’s only under contract for 2 years. But really, I seriously think that’s gonna cost him his job as it is, because in case you haven’t gotten it Drew, the status quo gets you WHOPPED in the playoffs.

Joe Johnson 14pts? Joe lifted his game to make the All Star Team. Since his selection his numbers have dropped to what they were prior to his push to make the team. Step it up Joe. Be a Leader. Rick Sund for 30+ years has been an average GM. Now he would be graded as poor. Those contracts to Joe, Marvin, Josh, Zaza, and Bibby sickening.

Wabe

The entire organization is either in denial about the true state of the Hawks…

Or

They’re just out to deceive the entire city of Atlanta thinking we’re really that stupid.

We’ve seen this script before…

We’ve seen it for years.

No defense.
Inconsistent offense.
No PG play.
Falling in love with the jumpers.

When the playoffs come around, and the game slows down, we all know that the team that can get easy buckets is the likely victor. We learned (at least fans learned, don’t look like this team learned ish) in last season’s playoffs that our jumpshooting style pair isn’t gonna beat a team that can pound that ball inside and get easy buckets. But, as Drew said, “they continue to settle…and it’s becoming a trend.”

Really? Becoming a trend? No coach, it is a trend, which is why so many on this blog continue to point out that this is the same ish, different season. It’s the same reason we got whopped in last season’s playoffs, and it’s the same reason people are losing confidence in your ability to get the guys to buy into what you say in every pregame interview, “I really think we need to play inside-out.”

Well, why is it not happening?

Why do you keep contemplating changes, and then we see the same ish?

Do you not have the power to make changes, even a minor change here or there?

Or do you not have the stones?

It’s gotten irritating following this mess.

Hinrich is a pro and a nice player but he isn’t what this team actually needs and it won’t change the outcome of this season but what it may do is keep this entire season from slipping totally away! At the start of the season I thought the Hawks were probably a really good team but not quite a championship team. As it stands now they are slightly above average! This season is slipping away from them right now and some changes have to be made to stop the slide.

Devin Harris would be a great fit but if not Harris then Hinrich or Felton, Ray Ray from the local gym will have to do. This team will need to be blown up at some point. If they can move Bibby, Marvin, and Josh Smith I would make that move and start to build around Horford (who is their best player) and JJ.

Time to move one way or the other Hawks!

I am just an average guy who use to play all sports just like everyone else. While playing basketball sometimes no one on your team would be hitting their jumpers so I would simply start driving to the hoop. I couldn’t hit a jump shot but I could drive and make something happen.

We don’t a point guard to help like that.

This is exactly what SI said would happen. When you get the players Coach, what happens when you can’t make everybody happy?

Playing Bibby and refusing to play Teague. We started this downhill garbage of double digit losses on a regular basis when Teague finally was taken out of the rotation. I wonder what other teams are writing on their scouting reports? Exploit Mike Bibby!

And since Jamal has taken Teague’s minutes at the Point full time, he’s terrible. He’s a scorer, not a Point.

And playing Mo’ and not even giving Wilken’s a chance? Come on Larry.

This whole debacle of the blowouts is on LD. Not Sund, unless he’s the guy who hired Larry, I heard it was ASG’s call. Not the players. It’s LD.

P.S. He can’t get Smoove down low either. They’ve tuned LD out about 6 years quicker than they tuned Woody out.

Does LD not understand that about 3 more 15+ losses and he’s on a major hotseat if not out of here? Come on LD, you had the All Star break to think things over, and we get this??

MC,

Great question from Tremaine..Why not just ask him already, “Why the DNP for Teague all the time? Why not start Teague like u start Collins?” We arent asking for Teague to play 30+ mins, just maybe 10-15min a game. Start Teague when you play the small lineup, and start Bibby with the Big lineup. Overpaid second tier players with exception of Horford. Johnson a great player but not the leader needed for the pay scale hes on. Ownership having financial trouble with the Thrashers certainly will effect the Hawks. Reminds me of ownership of Falcons before Blank bought them. Wanna blow this team up?

Smoove for Curry and Biedrins (Throw in Collins and Powell if you want)

Bibby, Sy and a 1st and a 2nd for Hinrich if the Wiz’s would do it

JC2 and Mo’ and a 2nd pick for Sessions and Harris

Jamal for Troy Murphy

Jeff Teague for Jason Thompson.

Now you’ve got a backcourt of:
Stephen Curry
Kurt Hinrich
Ramon Sessions
JJ

A Front court of:
Jason Thompson
Al
Troy Murphy
ZaZa

Still got Marvin and Wilkens on the wings, with a good, young Manny Harris.

I’m not ready to go that extreme yet, but I would def. dump Bibby, Mo, and Jamal with picks for 2 decent Points and another big. And it can be done evidently, if the news reports are true

Watched some of the game last night, but turned it off right before halftime. How can a team win any games without a point guard? Derek Fisher torched Bibby early for 6 straight points to open the game. He was taken out after about five minutes and replaced by Crawford. The Hawks played basically the rest of the game without a true pg. And you wonder why they lost by 24 points. A true pg would never continuously pass the ball to Josh Smith standing behind the 3 pt line with the shot clock running down. Joe Johnson did it on numerous occassions. And Josh does not have enough sense to drive the ball to the basket. Chris Webber and Kevin McHale pointed this out last night on NBATV. And Marvin Williams is worthless. He is not aggresive enough to ever amount to anything. Josh was throwing the ball to him on those two lob passes that almost shattered the backboard. Marvin was ahead of the pack both times but never even looked at going after the lob passes. Just running down the court with no purpose. Zaza is pathetic as well, but what else is new.

Marvin Williams and Jamal’s expiring contract to Denver for Nene. We know we need a point guard but we keep losing to the “big boys” because we need a true center so Al can play the 4. The Lakers have proven that stable point guard play is good enough to win a title. The Hawks have scoring from the 2 (JJ), 3 (Josh S.) and 4(Al) if they make this move for Nene. They ARE NOT going to resign Jamal so get some benefit from his expiring contract because history has shown free agents may have a home in Atlanta but they don’t want to play in Atlanta.

Samuel, that was funny.

So at what point do we stop saying “the offense is better than last year”? There isn’t a shred of evidence that says that the offense is better. These last few games, we look like a team incapable of scoring 90 points consistently. Time for some to recognize that we have taken a step backwards, not even a side-step. Many to blame but at the end of the day, we’re moving in the wrong direction (and no one can take satisfaction in the smoke and mirrors offense that produces fewer points and Josh standing in the corner on a fast break opportunity).

In the past, Boston, Orlando and Cleveland were better than us. Now, Chicago, Boston and Miami are better than us. In the future, Miami, Chicago and likely the Knicks will be better than us. We’re destined to be in that 4-6 range. “Welcome to the Slightly Above Average Team Nightmare on Marietta Street”.

3. Larry Drew is too scared to tell Smoove to STOP SHOOTING or SIT HIS AZZ down. Of all the coaches, they hired this guy???

4. Seriously, Josh is a great athlete (A+), but after that his BB IQ is terrible (D-). Its been time to cut ties with this guy for about 3 years now. Thats the problem with the guys up top, they KNOW NOTHING ABOUT Basketball.

Smoove needs to go and sometimes you have to move a guy like that to better your team. The Hawks have been in Atlanta for 40 years and not once have they been to the ECF’s…NOT ONCE.

Smoove does not have the handles to drive the ball consistently. Anyone who thinks he does is deluding themselves. He’s not some LeBron-level talent. Offensively, he is a complementary player, not a go-to guy. Even in yesterday’s game, there was a possession early in the 3rd when he tried to drive, got his driving lane cut off, couldn’t go anywhere else, and ended up jacking up a contested fadeaway brick (his worst shot of the night).

What he needs to do is get on the block with his back to the basket, draw a double team, and kick to the open man. Unfortunately on this team, nobody else can drive the ball either (except Horford), and on the occasions when Smoove drew double teams and kicked it out yesterday, the result was usually bricks from Bibby/Joe/Marvin/etc.

SI on Larry Drew, Sept. 22nd, 2010

“Drew’s strengths and weaknesses are both related to the rapport he has with his players, who frequently had their differences with Woodson. “When anybody had any problems on the court, we used to go to him for advice,” Smith said of Drew. “He knows what everybody likes to do.” That’s great for initial motivation, but what happens when the players inevitably discover that the head man can’t please everybody all of the time?

THE RIGHT HIRE? Ultimately, no. But Drew is a reasonable and inexpensive gamble: Only two years and $2.5 million of his $5 million contract are guaranteed. The Johnson signing obligates the Hawks to soar or crash with the current personnel, who need to develop poise and a backbone. Hiring their confidante gives players more control, but it also pins the responsibility of adulthood more directly on their shoulders.”

Najeh, then why is Josh leading the fast break? IMO, his worse shot of the night was when he went to the corner during a fast break opportunity like he was Ray Allen. He becomes the opposing team’s best friend when he takes himself out of position to finish a fast break. And it seems like that happens on about 50% of the fast breaks, he either tries to play PG or he stops just inside the 3-point ring for the open jumper. He is a top 5 finisher in the league but wants to be JJ Reddick. That has NOTHING to do with his teammates, that’s on Josh.

And no, Josh isn’t to blame for last night, I’m just discussing a specific issue that continues to plague this team… poor fast break execution due to self-inflicted decisions.

People here don’t understand that the object of the game is putting the ball in the hoop. They seem to get easly fooled by slick “talk” of gimmick high school offenses that never work in the NBA.

LD basically just went into the interview and said anything that seemed 180 degrees from Woody and our ignorant owners fell for it, along with many of our fans. People keep trying to place all the blame on Bibby now but refuse to accept the fact that we have marginal talent. JJ was an allstar because Woody alowed him to do what he does best. Same with Jamahl. Josh Smith clashed constantly with Woody so now LD let’s him do anything he wants and Josh is going backwards. Every team in the NBA said our switching defense made us unique and hard to deal with. We abandoned that. So now we can’t score or defend. LD has lost this team already. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Knicks catch us.

Of the Top 8 teams in the East, and top 8 teams in the West;

1) How many of them would Jason Collins start (for) at center?
2) How many of them would Mike Bibby be the starter for at PG?

I think the answer to both questions is 0. Hawks need to make a move. They should have made it over the offseason, but better late than never.

The ASG Don’t…

The Hawks don’t want to got into the Lux Tax..

They don’t want to give up youth…

They don’t want to give up draft picks…

They don’t want to trade jamal…

THE HOW DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO MAKE A TRADE, WITH A JEDI MIND TRICK!!!!!

The Hawks have to decide what is more important drfat picks or the Lux tax, because we can’t make a trade and have both in tacted.

To trade Bibby… You have to give up 2 1st rounders, because he is nolonger and NBA quality player…So you are basically asking a team to take his 6mil for next and what remains for two draft picks….
The Bulls gave up the 17th pick in the draft to get off Hinrich’s money and he can play.(Bibby should cost twice as much)

To trade Jamal… You are going to have to accept going into the lux tax next year, to get a player this year.

ASG Dilema…

Do you waste a year of you teams youth and hope for next year?

If we make it to the 2nd round or further, will we make up the cost of the lux tax?

I vote. Give up the draft Picks. You have 2 young players on your bench and you core… At the place your picking your picks have a slim chance for success.

So the asking price for Hinrich sounds like Bibby/Expiring/Jordan or Jeff/Draft Pick.

And, the asking price for Sessions sounds like Teague/Evans for Sessions/Harris.

And, the asking price for Harris would be Jamal/Teague or Jordan/Draft Pick (I’m trying to make the most comparable deal to what they’re asking Dallas for: Butler/D. Jones/Pick).

O’Brien – Even as cautious as Rick Sund and ASG are, I don’t think they wait until next season to put LD on the hot seat if this continues. I could see a realistic scenario where LD is fired by April I really do.

Play sub .500 BB, including double digit losses being the norm. Let the Knicks and Sixers start breathing down your necks. I say they start looking at an exit strategy from LD.

It would not surprise me if we lose badly tonight if Sund pulled the trigger on LD’s firing. I’m not predicting it, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

When your playing with 10’s of millions of dollars like ASG, you don’t fool around for long sometimes.

And I like LD as a person. He seems nice enough. But right now its obvious:

1) That the players are not listening to him

2) And he’s overmatched when it comes to rotations.

And we need a new PG, but I’m not sure that’s the answer. I’m more concerned we need a new Head Coach.

SteveW-Co-sign 10:31 post.

ASG wants the Home court and to make it to the 2nd round. If they think LD is going to be worse than Woody, the 1.5mil is small change…They will fire him.

Maybe that is why rick is with the team, to evaluate LD.

SteveW

February 23rd, 2011
10:36 am

Sund shouldn’t have to remove all of LD’s options to make him play the correct personnel, but I think that’s Sund’s only choice.

He really needs to trade Bibby, Mo’ and Jamal, because if he doesn’t, LD will continue making the wrong personnel decisions. It’s obvious as an ex-player, he has an affinity to vets, and a comfort zone with the guys he’s been around for years.

LD is currently the problem, nothing else. A good coach demands they listen, or takes appropriate action.

Doin’ Hawks Talk with Chris Broussard. He thinks Felton stays in Denver, they don’t trust Ty Lawson “all out” he is smallish at 5′9″ and Is he durable? Looks like we’re 3rd or 4th down Jersey’s list of deals for Devin Harris. Jamal and stuff won’t get that deal done per Broussard.

Beau Bock is screaming for Josh to GO INSIDE and Marvin Williams just plain sucks! Marvin can’t shoot already! He just can’t shoot and is useless! Beau Bock saids run like crazy and get Felton in here to run these guys! Scrap all that offense stuff and play some defense.

COACHING COACHING COACHING!!! When we traded for bibby we knew he didnt have much left but he was still gonna enough while we groomed a young point guard but we did not groom anyone. Acie LAq and now Teeague just sat on the bench while Woody and LD have rode the Bibby horse till the end. So what do they do try to trade Bibby when he has no value to any team… You either trade teague for harris or trade jordan crawford , I mean its not like our coaching staff can coach them anyways…

We have been outscored by a total of 71 points in 13 games since January 21st.

We have been beaten at home by 41 and 34 in that span.

We have also lost to Milwaukee and to the Bobcats (at home) during that span.

We have also lost to the Laker by 24. And it could have been 50 if the Lakers would have needed it to be. The game wasn’t even close.

“Najeh, then why is Josh leading the fast break? IMO, his worse shot of the night was when he went to the corner during a fast break opportunity like he was Ray Allen. He becomes the opposing team’s best friend when he takes himself out of position to finish a fast break. And it seems like that happens on about 50% of the fast breaks, he either tries to play PG or he stops just inside the 3-point ring for the open jumper. He is a top 5 finisher in the league but wants to be JJ Reddick. That has NOTHING to do with his teammates, that’s on Josh.”

All good points. I don’t remember that particular play, but there’s no excuse for him not running down the lane on a fast break. Of course, if the Hawks had a real point guard, Smoove may not feel so compelled to handle the ball on the break.

The worm has turned.

I am with SteveW on LD being the chief problem. LD says all the right things before a game and we get our hopes up that real change is going to happen, but nothing happens except more of the same. Then after a loss he says the same old tired stuff about the players not playing with energy and the players not sticking with the gameplan.

Everything is so inexplicably broken that we are left wondering aloud (as the Laker’s announcers were doing last night) if the Hawks are out partying all night the previous evening.

Can’t you see what we are BUILDING here? We are building a DYNASTY.

I will reiterate my philosophy: It’s MUCH better to have many winning seasons with CONSISTENCY than to be bad for many years, good for 2 (while winning a ring), then bad.

For example, look at the Miami Heat. They were an awful team for some time, got Shaq, won a ring, then stunk for 3-4 years after.

Is that what we want to be? It’s not about winning rings- it’s about CONSISTENT WINNING SEASONS.

ELITE teams are built in the regular season, NOT the playoffs.

Why do you all disagree? I have THIRTY-ONE years of WINNING SUCCESS.

Jojo, I asked for Al Jefferson in the offseason to help us against the Celtics, but not many were for it…too expensive….yet the Celtics thought highly of him prior to Garnett.
It isn’t cap friendly or realistic with Gearon making that move. Gearon isn’t interested in contending…..he is interested in making a profit only.

Also, remember that everyone in the NBA is like a FAMILY. There is no point RIPPING TEAMS OFF or making EQUAL TRADES. It’s best that we make do with what we have. We WILL go into the LT for the right players, and we do have cash saved from last year, but that just means the ASG will now have more money to take their children out to Chuck E. Cheeses. They have good pizza!

Let me remind you all to make sure you comb your hair and look nice for Kiss Cam for the next home game! We feel this is a very interactive experience. We are trying to bring the ENTERTAINMENT factor to Philips, not CHAMPIONSHIPS. It’s about having a WINNING RECORD and being ENTERTAINING.

Drew echoed a need for change a couple of weeks back. I think it was quite obvious then and even more obvious now, especially seeing we haven’t had any lineup changes, that he wants a personnel upgrade.

If Sund doesn’t make a move, nobody’s to blame but this garbo group of bums in ASG and Ricky Sund.

I have about had it with NBA all these mega team New York and Miami these players just want to play in those big markets like New York , Chicago , Los Angles its a lost cause Atlanta will never have a superstar

You would too if you had marketability! There’s WAY more money to be made from endorsements than the money your team pays you. And there’s way more endorsements to be had in NY, Chicago, LA, and Miami than Salt Lake, Denver, Cleveland and Toronto. Do you really blame them?
No matter where James played his endorsements weren’t going to be affected so his decision was simple. White pasty ugly ass Women in Cleveland vs. Miami Women? Ahhhh… case closed. Carmelo is from NY and played college ball at Syracuse of course he wants to go back. Bosh this one is real simple aeee… Canada vs. South Beach?

Atlanta is a great place to live and many NBA players live here but the team is run by idiots and the fan base doesn’t show up unless it matters. We were so bad for so long it’s hard to get players to come here for anything less than a king’s ransom. That’s why we overpaid Joe. We have a solid foundation with Horford, Smith and Joe if we could get another Star we could be real good but, I doubt that ever happens. In a couple of years we’ll trade off everyone and start over again. Like always!!

Fresh, one problem or more with that thought…..

-Teague is worth nothing because he can’t get on the court.
-Josh brings very little in return as he is showing his true value this year.
-JC2 – undersized SG…..perhaps he is the best asset that Utah would have wanted to replace Wes Matthews.

They wanted draft picks and NJ was flexible moving draft picks.

From Realgm:

The Hawks are interested in veteran Kirk Hinrich, but they aren’t willing to meet Washington’s current asking price.

The Wizards want both a young player and a first-round pick for Hinrich.

Atlanta is pushing for Washington to take back Mike Bibby for Hinrich, which would save the Wizards some money for next season. Hinrich is scheduled to make $8 million in 2011-12, while Bibby will earn $6.2 million.

The Wizards aren’t interested in taking on Marvin Williams, who has two years and $15.7 million left on his deal after this season.

Via David Aldridge/NBA.com

……………………………….

Wizards want both a young player and a first-round pick for Hinrich.

This is the first time I’ve ever posted on this blog, but I’m a basketball fan and an Atlanta native, so by virtue, I’m somewhat inclined to be a Hawks follower. The Nets just made a deal and got better, getting Deron Williams, and giving up Favors and Devon Harris. I thought Harris was maybe going to be a target for Rick Sund, but not anymore I guess. Point being, the Hawks have got to make a move, and you can forget about moving Johnson, less than a year into his max deal, no one is going to want to take on that kind of load for a 18 pt/night production. The only moveable piece that I see that would garner any valuable return would be Josh Smith. Whoever it is (besides Horford), I don’t care, but it’s got to be someone. The Hawks aren’t getting better, they were lazy in their Head Coach search in the offseason, and it’s all showing now. This team, if it stays as is, will lose in the first round. Guaranteed.

35 years as a Hawks fan, and I can assure you I will not waste one more minute of my life supporting this team if Sund doesn’t do something dramatic to fix this disgusting roster. They have the basketball IQ of Forrest Gump and as much heart as the Tin Man. Joe Johnson is worth a max contract? Maybe if he had some leadership qualities, but he has none and repeats the same tired lines after every blowout.

They should’ve kept Woodson in place, because it’s obvious that the coaching change did absolutely nothing to convince these players to approach their jobs with even the slightest bit of professionalism.

This west coast trip will be lightly looked upon by management. They have never made a quick decision in their history. They play it out where no move is a rash move.
We already know the result here; we just don’t want to see it happen!
We have no voice here…we seem to be able to influence MC and his interviews, but we have no voice to management expressing our disgust with the core. Seems like they make moves to prove to you they know basketball.
They are going to drive that every year improvement down your throat!

This brand is damaged goods. Joe Johnson will impact the salary structure for years going forward.

Simply put, management won’t invite controversy in their tight family circle. The core will remain as is going forward.

I would go ahead and target Rip Hamilton to replace Jamal’s spot, even at 2M per two more years over Jamal’s 10M. I would do it only if I can send my bad contracts there and pick up Ben Wallace and Tayshun Prince as well. I would send my 1st picks too!

The shine is off on Larry…he needs to go back to summer league…OB, when you know something is going to happen, as clear as water, that Larry would not be successful, why does the ASG just simply not have simple common sense logic? Larry is Terry Stotts, is Bob Weiss, is Lon Kruger….they are all in over their head and can’t motivate a group of millionaires to utilize all their resources.

if you dont get a facilitator in here who can take advantage of his great jump shot i would move him. he doesnt want any part of the paint, his game shows it. we will be 1 and done on the offensive end w/ one of our best rebs hanging around the elbow/short wing. im willing to bet that Al comes into camp next year able to hit the 3 ball.

bigdave,

To answer your question from the last page.

Al’s hands down the lone Hawk that I’d classify as “a winner”.

His talent/skill set may make he seem expendable to you, but if you asked me to choose one Hawk to build my team around from this “core” we have together, it’d be around Horford – hands down.

There’s been talk of a lack of leadership with the Hawks, and again, if you take Horford off a team that already lacks leadership at crucial spots, what are you left with?

The only way I ship Horford is if I’m getting a legit franchise building block in return for him. A legit center in the post.

Otherwise, Horford stays.

My criticism of this Hawks team is it seems like there’s really not much drive to win from anybody (top-down). I’ve said this before, but the Hawks seriously aren’t anywhere near hungry enough to really compete for anything. They seem disinterested all too often. And truthfully, I don’t think they’re a team driven to win a title. They seem like a group that’s ok with being “good enough to make the playoffs”. They assume the same mentality that ASG seems to carry around, which is why so many fans are frustrated.

The exception from that though is Al Horford (just my opinion). He won titles at Florida, and he wants to win.

Wabe

February 23rd, 2011
3:03 pm

To put it simply, Horford’s the only guy on this team who I think has heart.

All of these other guys are just fine getting paid, win or lose don’t seem to bother them as much as it should. As long as they get paid, they’re straight.

lewis

February 23rd, 2011

Cousins is already better then Bynum.
He holds his own against other true centers, DHoward, Shaq and Kendrick.
Lots of fire in him.

Shoots the jumper too much but will eventually learn to hit it. Great foot-work in his post game too.

If the Hawks could deal with a young Josh Smith, i’m sure Josh could help them handle DCous

Al Horford is a great player but Josh Smith has more potential in his offensive post-game as well as defensive post-game. Horford and Josh both need true centers to play alongside. Hated Josh’s game for the longest time, but when he’s efficient and plays within himself he’s an all-star both ways. I love his defense, he’s one of the few players we have that play with intensity

Shake Something

February 23rd, 2011

If Joe can go back to backing down smaller guards like he did during Woody’s reign, and Josh Smith taking slower and less athletic forwards off the dribble to the basket and both drawing fouls, then this team could be alot better. Both actions could open Crawford up on the wing.Woody had more control over these guys than LD does.Woody got off the bench and yelled at these guys to do thing on the court,LD just sits back

Anybody think if we can go back to ISO Joe, with Woody and Joe puts up 25 PPG(06-07) and 6 assist (07-09) and be alot more successful

Excellent hands. Outstanding touch. Nimble footwork. Physical toughness. Quite a rebounder. Ability to create own shot. Ability to finish around basket. Doesn’t always play hard. Immature. Not mentally tough. Questionable intangibles.

Wabe

February 23rd, 2011

The thing about trading either though to me is this:

Josh Smith has tons of potential. But that’s just it. We’re still waiting for this guy to become what he’s capable of being. I think McHale made a great point in the pregame last night on NBATV about Josh Smith. Josh has no identity, mainly offensively. We know what he’s capable of defensively, but he still hasn’t figured out what type of player he wants to be offensively. He’s 6 years into his career and we still have debates about whether he should play the 3 or 4. Most here want him to play the 4, but he shy’s away from it to be a perimeter guy, which he doesn’t really have the make up to be.

This is why I think people question the guys IQ. Not calling him dumb, but he’s lost offensively. He has no clue what type of offensive player he wants to be. His skill set makes him more suitable to play in the post, but it’s just a matter of him commiting to that and improving down low. He has to play in the post consistently, not run out to the 3 point line and jack up jumpshots.

With Horford, he’s far more polished offensively, IMO. He too has potential. He may not be the “freak athlete” that Josh is, but he can get you 20-10, and I can see him being that player for the Hawks more consistently than Josh. But again, defensively, he’s nowhere near and probably never will be what Josh is.

It’s a give and take. IMO, Josh is much riskier than Horford. You know what Horford brings, and you know he’ll get better and remain consistent like his mid-range jumper. But, with Josh, there’s always question marks. Trading either could blow up in the Hawks faces. If you trade Horford and Josh never pans out and remains an inconsistent identity-less offensive player, then what? Vice versa, if you trade Smith in favor of Horford and Smith does eventually put the whole package together, we’ll all be p#ssed.

Mudcat

“The Atlanta Hawks are open for business. They want to make a move, have wanted to make a move, but just about everyone on their roster can be had.

Now, that’s not saying they are having a fire sale. Not at all. The Hawks are looking to get better, and if trading a piece one might not normally think they would trade will do that, they are open. Marvin Williams has been shopped for awhile and would they’d like to move him. Mike Bibby is available for a point guard. Jamal Crawford they will discuss, but they have to get value in return equal to what he brings them off the bench – which is a lot.

Al Horford is a Poison Pill Provision player due to signing his early extension, but would likely be off the table anyway. The Hawks also don’t't seem interested in moving Joe Johnson.

However, in a change from earlier they will listen to offers for Josh Smith. They are not actively looking to move Smith, and any offer better return them a significant piece of talent, but they will at least not hang up the phone until they hear what another team is thinking. They still see Smith as a cornerstone…so to get him the offer would need to be approached in that fashion.

More on this as we hear it…”

Wabe, agree with everything you said.
But, Josh for the most part does what he’s told.
The majority of his jumpers come late in the shot clock when he’s wide open.
You have the entire team willing to feed Josh on the perimeter, which as Chris Webber pointed out,

“Joe Johnson, if you don’t want Josh Smith hoisting 3’s, don’t feed him late in the clock when Marvin is standing in his corner wide open for his shot”

How many times have we seen Bibby and Marvin pass wide open jumpers to give it to Josh on the perimeter late in the clock instead?

Lopez is a C that averages 5.8 Rebs a game and shoots less than 50% from the field. Josh plays bigger and tougher than Lopez.

HC LDrew is making a habit of saying the Hawks didn’t penetrate enough, or shot too many jump shots, or didn’t defend well enough, or didn’t play with enough energy. Yet, he continues to give heavy mins to the very players that are the primary cause of these problems, and I’m not just talking about PG MBibby. It’s a damned shame that our center and PF lead more fastbreaks than our PG’s, and actually average more APG’s. The real joke about this is these 2 are also our best finishers.

Man, the Hawks are so messed up now, and LDrew, like Woodson, refuses to acknowledge a need for change, although he keeps informing everyone that he’s thinking about it. Hell, with fewer than 30gms left in the season, if he doesn’t starting doing instead of thinking, he’s going to think his way right out of a job.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. Even though none of the players will speak out about it, but based on their actions, or inactions, they’re demonstrating how tired they are of carrying the load LDrew keeps putting on their backs. When Bibby or Jamal aren’t scoring, everyone has to compensate for them both offensively and defensively, and it appears to getting old.

Against LA, LDrew forced our starters to play 3 on 5 offensively by starting JCollins, who, along with Bibby, scored a combined zero pts. Even if we make a trade and acquire a PG, there’s still the possibility LDrew might use the excuse of him not knowing the OFF and/or needing time to adjust to continue relying heavily on MBibby and JaCrawford as his preferred PG combination.

Either way, it appears that our plays have started to see Woodson whenever they look at LDrew, and have started tuning him out, just like they did Woodson, only sooner.

I have been asking Sund to go get that high draft pick all summer so they could pull him in here….the huge void would have been filled and on the cheap. Instead, we stick with the core company line and force our fans to believe we have something special here.
The problem with bringing in Big Cuz, is that we need an actual coach/mentor/teacher to show him the ropes. Can anyone say Patrick Ewing? What does Ewing have on his resume in Orlando?

Please Gearon/Sund, tell me why you interview Mark Jackson, who hasn’t coached one day in the NBA over Ewing? You take someone from your rival and perhaps help yourself in the same transaction. And I gotta tell you that in no way is Ewing worse than what Larry is accomplishing here.

So, you have to dump Larry and his interchangeable parts approach and get us some basketball skilled players.

Truth, go get me Aaron Brooks and ask Houston what will it take? I give up both Teague and JC2 to bring him in here…they haven’t been totally ruined yet by this coaching staff. Add a draft pick, just get us some new energy. Something Bibby, nor JC1, nor Mo is showing this year.

This isn’t rocket science; its meshing players who are skilled in their craft and have some heart. Our team goes into games looking beat.

Did you see Larry’s shirt collar starting to curl up last night? He had no clue what buttons to push…nothing worked, so he gives up in the 2nd quarter down 8, he puts Bibby and JC1 on the floor at the same time…next blink, they’re down 17 in 3 minutes! That tells you the head coach is clueless because he thinks these players like playing with each other.

Zero accountability.

LD is evidently letting the players run the team. Getting their input who should be playing etc. Of course JJ and Josh want Bibby in there. That way they get more touches. To be completely honest with you, Horford for Cousins?

To those asking about this, or set on making this move, if I’m the Hawks, I’m looking to make a move that will propel this team to immediate contender status. I don’t think Cousin’s provides this.

Looking at the Hawks, they signed JJ to the max 6 year deal. I think that move should signal that this team is going to put the necessary peices around JJ within that span of time to get us into contender status.

Again, I don’t think Cousins does that for the Hawks. So no, I wouldn’t trade Horford for Cousins.

Truthfully, if I’m the Hawks, I’m looking for good proven talent if I’m sticking with this bunch. I’m tired of hearing about upside and potential, because I hope we’ve learned by now that potential is just potential, until it actually pans out. In our case, with our state of developing players, I don’t go near guys that need time to develop.

I’ll take a Cousins if we’re looking to blow this thing up and start over. Not if we’re looking to add peices to get us over the top. He’s not a peice that does that. He’s a rookie, and he’s gonna need time to pan out. I’ll also add, how many Hawks draft picks have made a drastic leap from year to year? I think this too points to our inability to harness a players potential. Cousins would be another year to year player. By that I mean, it’d be duplicate to what you’re seeing out of Horford/Smith, guys that are good and improving, but haven’t really made a leap from one year to the next.

Available PG’s and their possible cost according to reports:

Curry – Josh would get a Curry according to what GS is asking.

Felton – Maybe 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and Bibby to mentor Ty and Mo’ for an expiring contract get’s you Felton. The Nuggets reportedly would take 1 halfway decent 1st, so 2 from us might fit the bill. The salaries work BTW.

Hinrich – A young player and a 1st. Bibby, Sy, and a 1st and 2nd? I wonder..Give 2 seconds for all I care.

Sessions – A young a 2nd pick. JC2 and 2 second picks as far as I’m concerned.

I hope we get 2 PG’s out of this, but that’s just me.

This love affair with Bibby has to go….the guy won’t talk without a towel over his mouth so no one can pine what he is saying….I question his drive the moment he heads to the bench…he looks just as comfortable sitting there as he does jacking up 3s.

Steve, its going to take a coaching upgrade to make a difference. Larry is letting guys play their own game, when their game really doesn’t translate to good basketball. If we can’t run, we can’t win.

Bibby could help a team playing 5-7 minutes per half. That’s about all right now. Give a starter a breather. And he would have more energy with his PT decreased also, so his D might not be as bad.

But Jamal is spent. I think LD is trying to turn this wonderful scorer into a PG, and he’s thinking too much, and is now in a bad funk. That’s what it looks like to me. And Jamal’s D is abysmal also.

“Josh has no identity, mainly offensively. ”

How much of this is on him and how much of it is on the system?

Whenever the Hawks go to the post, whether it’s to Smoove or Horford or Joe, good things happen. Whenever they don’t, they end up jacking up jump shots, Smoove included.

This “lack of identity” has been a gift and a curse for Smoove his entire career. On the one hand it gives a creative coach (yeah I got jokes) plenty of options when it comes to how to use him, but on the other hand, he’s a classic jack of all trades/master of none who hasn’t established a go-to scoring move, whether that’s a jump shot or a post move.

Under Woody, it was easy to attribute the problem to the coaching staff and the scheme, since only Joe and Jamal ever had plays run for them. Under LD, the system is supposed to get the ball in the front court’s hands more often, and when it does, good things have consistently happened. Over the last 13 games or so, though, the Hawks have had at best a sporadic commitment to the post, essentially reducing the new offensive scheme to one similar to what Woody ran. And not so surprisingly, the same problems from last year have cropped up; only this time around it’s worse, since LD apparently doesn’t have Woody’s ability to hold Smoove more accountable for his affinity for doing things that are out of his comfort zone.

To me, Smoove’s jump shots and Al’s low field goal attempt total are symptoms of the same problem, that this team as a whole (and Joe and Jamal in particular) don’t get the ball in the post enough. The problem manifests itself in different ways; Smoove finds himself away from the hoop and tries to force the issue when his skills are not developed enough to do so, while Al passes up opportunities where he should be more aggressive. Smoove is overconfident, while Al is not confident enough. Both players suffer from the same problems.

I am never a fan of getting rid of a player because of the situation around him. I would still like to see what Smoove (and Al for that matter) can do with a good coach (one who has a working offensive system like LD but will actually hold his players accountable to execute it) and a good point guard, which neither player has played with in their career so far. A good organization would find a way to acquire an upper echelon point who can get the most out of Smoove and Al. Unfortunately, this is not a good organization.

Hinrich is a good player, but he’s not a facilitator at point guard. The Hawks’ defensive issues at the PG position would be solved by acquiring him, but I don’t think their issues with over-reliance on the perimeter game and under-utilization of the post would be solved. I don’t think Hinrich increases this team’s ceiling in the playoffs. If all the Hawks are giving up is Bibby obviously it’s a no brainer, but I want them to aim higher. I want Raymond Felton.

I’m with you on that though Najeh. Agreed 100%.

Lack of a real consistent offensive system and the lack of a PG have a lot to do with it.

That’s why I think trading either of them is risky. Josh is the bigger risk of the two though were we to trade either. But, the higher the risk, the higher the reward. His upside is tremendous, but again, with so many factors needed to propel his game – mainly what you point out (lack of a floor general/facilitator and the lack of an offensive system) hold him back from truly progressing.

I just don’t see the Hawks trading away JaCrawford’s $10.8M expiring contract, because it’s the only expiring contract that’s big enough to allow the Hawks to remain below the luxury tax cap after this season. Most likely, any trade we make will involve a salary match, or us acquiring a contract that can be covered by our $3.63M trade exception.

Unless Sund and the ASG step in and insist that LDrew gives Teague that opportunity to prove himself that’s currently being denied, they’ll have to make a trade for a PG, or run the risk of a 1st rd playoff embarrassment simular to last yrs 2nd rd playoff embarrassment.

STEVEW-JSmith’s salary is $11.7M and SCurry’s is $2.9M, so there’s no way that will work salary wise in a straight up trade. The Warriors would have to include DGadzuric’s $7.24M expiring contract or ABeidrins $9M contract for it to work. However, if we send them JSmoove, MEvans and Zaza, and they sent us ABiedrins, DGadzuric and SCurry, it would work salary wise.

This trade would allow the Hawks to get the PG it needs, plus a starting quality and backup C. As a bonus, we would retain JaCrawford’s services, along with his expiring contract, and also have DGadzuric’s $7.24M expiring contract coming off the books. It would be a total win, win for the Hawks, both talent wise and financially.

“bigdave,

To answer your question from the last page.

Al’s hands down the lone Hawk that I’d classify as “a winner”.

His talent/skill set may make he seem expendable to you, but if you asked me to choose one Hawk to build my team around from this “core” we have together, it’d be around Horford – hands down.

There’s been talk of a lack of leadership with the Hawks, and again, if you take Horford off a team that already lacks leadership at crucial spots, what are you left with?

The only way I ship Horford is if I’m getting a legit franchise building block in return for him. A legit center in the post. ”
……………………………………………….

i hear ya.. but as far as him being classified a winner.. well, thats an opinion. i mean, if we’re going to base it off his college accolades, then so is Mike.. and Marvin. we have 3 NCAA championship players. thats a bit overrated to me. especially given the talent he had around him. his leadership.. uummm.. so-so.. i mean, he isnt rallying troops or anything like that. i dont know.. absolutely, his skill does make him expendable to me. thats really the only thing i go by. what you can or do you do on the floor. to me, Josh is the better player.. and has greater value (still).

why build the team around Al? a 4 man? who shoots jumpers. i could see if he was an above avg post player/athlete w/ that jumper.. but he’s not.. he’s not close to Amare/Bosh.. or anyone like that. he cant create his offense.. and never will be able too. just not him. doesnt have the physical ability. if im rebuilding this team its still around JOE JOHNSON. to me, Al has a Brandon Bass skill set w/ 2 college championships.

honestly , im hoping he’s involved in a Melo like package involving Dwight next year.

Well the Phoenix Suns will be playing the Atlanta SOFT’S tonight and how depressing will this game be. I’m gonna live and die with the SOFT’S but for the amount of monies these guys are making it’s like a slap in the face. A night of watching the “smoove” shoot brick after brick, doing dumb point guard play and killing rallies because he wants to be a superstar is getting kinda old. An ALLSTAR player he will never, ever be, the boy has no baketball IQ. Now ISO Joe could come up with 25 – 30 points tonight, he’s a talent but not the kind of talent that can carry a team and he never will be. Go in low Marvin is surprise, surprise, surprise….lolol jus pitiful. They need to purge this team and build around Al. In our recent losses, we’ve heard repeated comments from HC LDrew about:
1-the team relying too much on shooting jump shots
2-the team not penetrating
3-the team not playing DEF
4-the team not playing with any energy

Now, if we didn’t know any differently, wouldn’t these complaints sound just like a perfect description of our starting PG? And wouldn’t it also suggest that the team as a whole has fallen prey to the same shortcomings that’s plaguing its starting PG?

It also appears that LDrew won’t give a hint about what his suggested changes will be because he never intended to make any. With both of his designated PG’s playing basically NO DEF, and struggling offensively, what’s so difficult about making that change?

I think you’re right, but I think this is more likely to happen on draft day. I could see the Hawks making a trade with some under the cap team like what the Bulls did last year, when they traded Hinrich and a first rounder for basically nothing. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Hawks dump Marvin and/or Zaza on some under the cap team for nothing and give them a first round pick for their trouble.

If Hinrich and Sessions both come here and Jamal gets sent out (no confirmation of this, just going off Ken Berger mentioning Cleveland) Sessions would probably replace the bench role of Jamal. Maybe the Hawks lose a little bench scoring, but the increased ball movement, ability to get to the line, and defense (from Hinrich) would probably compensate.

I actually thought he was a pretty good defender.

Then again, some might know better than me.

I know for sure he can’t be worse than Bibby. And by Bibby’s standards, he’s 100% upgrade. He does what Bibby does (maybe not as well) knockin down jumpers, but plays better defense.

The Atlanta Hawks are making progress toward their first move of note in the Eastern Conference arms race.

The Hawks are negotiating the final points of a deal with Washington that would bring veteran guard Kirk Hinrich to Atlanta for the stretch run, sources close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher.

Sources told ESPN.com that the latest version of the deal would send veteran guard Mike Bibby, rookie guard Jordan Crawford, swingman Maurice Evans and a 2011 first-round pick to the Wizards for Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong.

Hinrich was brought to Washington to mentor prized rookie John Wall, but the former Bull has been coveted by the Lakers and other playoff teams since it became apparent that the Wizards would fall out of playoff contention early.

The Hawks have done very little to change their roster in a conference where Boston, Chicago, Miami and New York have made major upgrades since last season. Hinrich will bring some needed depth and versatility to Atlanta’s backcourt as the Hawks try to make a run at a top-four seed in the East — or at least ensure that they don’t slip lower than No. 5 after New York’s acquisition of Carmelo Anthony.

I don’t doubt that Jordan could play, although I think his total lack of a conscience when it comes to shooting would have made it tough for him to get minutes on any serious contender this year. Typically, though, you tend to see teams value players they have seen over players they haven’t seen, and typically you see teams valuing point guards over combo guards.

Anyway, that’s all speculation. For all I know Washington may have asked for Jordan over Teague.

I won’t blame Bibby for this pathetic group of owners + Sund’s mistakes.

Bibby did what he was brought here to do. We needed a PG, Bibby filled that roll as the stop-gap. That’s all he was supposed to be.

The problem is, when his contract was up, Sund re-up’d. And truthfully, we did little to nothing to find his replacement. If Teague was supposed to be that guy, both coaches have done a terrible job getting the kid prepared.

Bibby shouldn’t get hammered. He simply agreed to a deal. He came here making $15 million a year, we resigned him for half of that. At the time, it seemed like a decent move. That wasn’t the case. Too many years, and really too much money for where he went after that signing. He aged quick.
