Atlanta Hawks: Bibby for Hinrich in five-player deal

What do you think about the Hawks' trade?

Phoenix–After striking out in their efforts to acquire point guards Devin Harris and Raymond Felton, the Hawks agreed to terms with the Wizards on a trade for veteran Kirk Hinrich and athletic big man Hilton Armstrong, the team announced tonight.

As part of the deal, the Hawks sent Mike Bibby, rookie Jordan Crawford, swingman Mo Evans and their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Wizards.

Bibby, Crawford and Evans were informed of the trade prior to the team’s game against Phoenix tonight. Jeff Teague replaced Bibby in the starting lineup.

Hawks coach Larry Drew declined to comment on the trade before the game because it wasn’t yet official.

The Bulls selected Hinrich, 30, with the seventh overall pick out of Kansas in the 2003 draft. The Bulls traded him to Washington last summer along with Kevin Seraphin.

The Hawks expect Hinrich to shore up their weak perimeter defense, which has put stress on the team defense as players constantly scramble to help against dribble penetration. Like Bibby, Hinrich is a good spot-up shooter but is a better playmaker off the dribble and should help Atlanta’s fast break.

The Hawks also hope Hinrich (6-4, 190), who’s earned a reputation as a hard-nosed player, will provide toughness and leadership. He and Marvin Williams went at it during a game in Chicago last season, with both earning technical fouls.

“I’ve always been a super fan of Kirk,” Williams said. “Watching him at Kansas, he just competes, man. In college, coach [Roy] Williams would always make reference to Kirk Hinrich and say he has that toughness and that attitude.”

Armstrong (6-11, 235 pounds) is limited offensively and doesn’t rebound well for his size. But he’s an athletic leaper who could find a role helping the Hawks protect the rim, which also is a weakness (especially when Josh Smith is not in the game).

“I think in the paint he can block some shots and be able to add that inside presence and help us out down there a little bit,” Smith said.

The trade is another move for the Hawks that could help them now at the expense of future flexibility and development of young players.

Both Armstrong and Evans’ contracts expire after the season. Hinrich is scheduled to make $8 million next season compared to salaries of $6.2 million for Bibby and $1.1 million for Crawford . That would add roughly $700,000 to Atlanta’s estimated $65 million in committed salaries for 2011-12.

The Hawks also had to part with the draft pick and Crawford, whom they acquired in a draft night trade in 2010 after the Nets selected him No. 27 overall. The shooting guard had played sparingly this season, appearing in just 16 of 56 games.

Finally, the trade is the latest indication that the Hawks don’t intend to give Teague a larger role. Teague, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 draft, had played in 46 of 56 games for an average of 11.6 minutes entering the game tonight.

The Hawks acquired Hinrich after a wide search for a trading partner in an urgent attempt to acquire a point guard.

A league source with knowledge of Atlanta’s inquiries said the team tried to swing a trade for Harris before the Nets sent him to Utah in a deal that got them All-Star Deron Williams. The source said the Hawks also were rebuffed when they inquired about point guard Raymond Felton after New York traded him to the Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.

The Hawks also had interest in Cleveland point guard Ramon Sessions, according to the source.

JC44 What did we really lose though? Constant dribble penetration from Bibby, terrible season for the “undervalued one”, Jordan who has seen maybe 30 minutes this whole season, and a first round pick who we would probably waste anyways?

Don’t think he’s an ultimate answer but much like getting Bibby 3 yrs ago was an improvement and a jump start to this sad team, I believe this will give the same jolt to the hawks now. It’s improvement and at least it’s doing something. Sund has a pulse I guess. I wonder how the big man fits in or was he just a “throw in”

Why are we getting rid of Jordan Crawford? I’m not worried at all about the first round pick considering that given our record it won’t be a very good pick anyway, and our scouts seemingly do a poor job of evaluating talent in the draft (outside of choosing Al Horford, the draft choices have been quite disappointing). However, while Hinrich for Bibby is still a nice deal, I don’t like giving up Jordan who looks like a guy with a lot of potential and a great mentality. He’s one of the few young players with a highly competitive nature and no fear.

If we were getting Blatche or McGee I wouldn’t mind, but Hilton Armstrong will probably just waste away on our bench. I doubt L.D. will give him much of a chance. I really hope the Hawks make additional trades beyond this before the deadline.

Terrible trade, Jordan Crawford will be a good player in this league he could have help replace the loss of Jamaal Crawford after you lose him to free agency. By the way, for those of you saying that this trade doesn’t make us any better, keep in mind that in the present time (right now), this trade does not make us any worse. Hinrich is no worse on either end of the floor than Bibby. Down the road, if Crawford ends up being a quality starter this may end up being a bad move, Right now though, this definitely doesn’t hurt the team.

I generally don’t like giving up first round picks and young talent on rookie contracts either, but as bad as Sund is at drafting and as bad as Hawks coaches are at player development, I doubt the Hawks would have got anything meaningful out of Jordan or the first rounder anyway. No question to me this helps the Hawks short term, but Hinrich is by no means a long term solution at the point guard position.

What I’d really like to see is Teague play an evenly matched game with Nash tonight.

I would have given up three players just to get Bibby off our hands, however, I am very disappointed that Jordan Crawford was part of the deal. He will be a very good player once he gets to develop his game.

The move was necessary because the team had so completely imploded these past several games, but it is not a move that will push the Hawks up the standings.

This is, as Big Ray might say, a reactionary move rather than proactive decision.

Regardless of what you might think of his talents, one thing Hinrich brings is some much needed toughness. I Like the trade as long as they sign Jamal Crawford to an extension. If they do that than our team is what it is. Hinrich is an upgrade and I just happy the Hawks made a move at the position that was costing us the MOST! Jeff Teague is the future, he just needs to get a more consistent jump shot and a little more confidence and he will be a beast. Hinrich is a Above Average Point who will fit the bill perfectly and he also can play a little D. Mike Bibby is a back up Point at this point in his career, so If the ASG resigns JAMAL CRAWFORD, This Is a good trade, if they let Jamal Crawford LEAVE than All I GOTTA SAY IS, “F@#K THE HAWKS!” But I am happy they made a move! NAJEH-This trade signals the ASG and Sund’s committment to developing JTeague, whether LDrew is or not. With Bibby gone, and JaCrawford on an expiring contract, it looks like it will be Hinrich and Teague after this season. It also tells me that LDrew, like Woodson, shares the same stupid bias for vet PG’s and against young PG’s.

Otherwise, why not go for the younger, quicker, faster, and much cheaper RSessions, who would have provided us with a long term PG solution? At any rate, this is a much better option than having LDrew continue to foolishly rely so heavily on MBibby and JCrawford as our solution at PG.

I also think his 3pt range and accuracy was the deciding factor in choosing to trade for Hinrich over RSessions.

Can’t believe we gave them a first round pick. That blows. But with a line up of Hinrich, JJ, Marvin, Smoove, and Horford, I’m guessing the Hawks will become one of the pretty good defensive teams in the league. Improving our perimeter defense is gonna work wonders for this team.

Guys, one thing that you may be ignoring here is that fact that people seem to be assuming that Hinrich will immediately be our starting PG. With L.D. as head coach, don’t be so sure. Armstrong may never even dress for games (the Etan Thomas role), and Hinrich may come off of the bench since L.D. like Jamal so much and hates Teague. It seems like common sense to start Kirk at the PG, and most coaches would, but we are talking about L.D. here. His decision making has been way beyond questionable at this point.

Oh, and I also heard about how well Armstrong has played defensively, but keep in mind that that doesn’t mean he will get minutes, or that he will play more minutes than someone like Zaza. L.D. has shown us throughout the season that he prefers offense over defense and that he does not reward players he doesn’t like with minutes for great defensive play. Just don’t get your hopes up because you might be in for some big disappointment.

I actually have less of a problem with this than most, although I’d like to see the full financial numbers of the deal. Let’s face it, Bibby’s contract/production level meant it was time for him to go. Our best chance is to have a team that works hard and smart and hopefully becomes something we can be proud of despite wins and losses because we can’t compete with other elite teams. I dont get this trade. I want the Hawks to do something, but this seems like a wash at best. not worried about the draft pick..it is prob a late teen pick which usually doesnt produce a starter..and the hawks blow their pick every yr anyway. And Bibby was going downhill, but I dont know that much about Hinrich..seems like an average player in the few times I have seen him.

Are there some hidden contract advantages that I am not seeing, or is this just doing something just to be doing something?

I would have rather given up a better player or two for Deron Williams..I would have given the Jazz Bibby, either Horford or Smith, and any other starter or two bench players they wanted..plus picks.Do you think the Jazz would have done that?

“Hinrich has been overrated for years, brings better D than Bibby, but he’s not the shooter Bibby is. ”

Hinrich and Bibby have the exact same 3 point percentage for their careers. 37.9%. Bibby shoots slightly better overall for his career, but Hinrich shoots better overall this year. They have almost identical A/T ratios for their careers as well.

Offensively, I doubt that this improves the Hawks all that much. Defensively, I think it is an enormous improvement. Short term, the Hawks should be better. Long term, they still need a solution for the point guard position.

Anyone that says KHinrich isn’t much of an upgrade over MBibby obviously suffers from a very limited basketball insight. KHinrich plays DEF, and that alone makes him a big upgrade over Bibby. No more zones or defensive gimmicks to try and hide Bibby’s DEF deficiencies.

Hinrich’s solid DEF will allow everyone to play his assigned man, which will allow us to better defend the perimeter. His outside shooting, as well as his willingness and ability to penetrate, makes us much more versatile, both offensive and defensively. He still has enough speed and quickness to allow us to play uptempo and be a fastbreaking team. He also has more stamina and and energy.

There’s no way anyone can realistically say he isn’t much of an upgrade over Bibby and have a clue about what they’re saying.

I think the deal helps us now. Hinrich is a very good perimeter defender and also distibutes the ball well. I dont think its a big upgrade over Bibby but for what we need it helps us. As for the rest of the players I dont like giving Jordan and a 1st in that deal. I would of gave one or the other but not both. I just think with superstar players getting traded around the league you need to hold onto 1st rd picks and not trade them in a deal like this. You never know if something can come your way but the Hawks are incapable of making a good move anyway. I wouldnt be surprised if Bibby is bought out by the Wizards and signs with the Heat.

The trade doesn’t address the big problem. The best two players on the team by far are both PF and neither should be playing anywhere near big minutes at another position. Playing Horford out of position at C isn’t fair to him. Smith shooting 3’s is a nightmare.

JJ is a candidate for most over paid player in the league. JJ just isn’t a superstar and is at best a third option on a top 4 or 5 team. We all know he disappears when teams decide to play defense in the playoffs. Marvin Williams was a terrible pick then and an even worse pick today.

It’s time to blow up the team and rebuild. I don’t understand how with such a vibrant black community that signing free agents for the Hawks is such a problem.

I personally think that ASG is intentionally running the Atlanta Hawks franchise into the ground, so that they can have an excuse to sell it to another city.

Fundamentals

Armstrong is a vet min player who is in a 1 year deal. That means we took on 1.7 million for Hinrich next year and saved a few $$ this year?

How about picking up TJ Ford when he’s bought out to shore up the PG slot on the cheap like ASG likes it? Seriously, we’d have to PG’s who could penetrate and play better D than we had? Not all bad?

Question is can Armstrong show any of the promise he showed as a defensive player of the year in college? Long shot, but he’s gone if we don’t like him most likely in May when our season ends early.

I would think we could get much better for 2 of those players and a 1st. Maybe if Mcgee would have been in the trade rather than Armstrong but still that would be a quality streak. At least the hawks are trying

Simply put, the JC2 draft pick/trade was a waste. Joe resigned and JC1 is in front with no hope for JC2 to get minutes.
The Hawks lost nothing; draft picks at that level don’t mean much. It doesn’t mean we can’t go get another one.
I like the deal..anything to get us out of the JC1/Bibby combo.
And I agree, time to wipe the Marvin Williams draft pick away too! It can’t happen soon enough.
Glad to finally see Bibby go….and Teague may get a few minutes tonight. Larry sure didn’t look happy when discussing losing Bibby.

BOTTOM LINE: This trade marginally improves this hawks team…Not a good move unless these are simply more pieces that we are using to trade…HIGHLY doubtful though because there two good pg’s have already been traded. Not only did we trade a first round pick for an average player but we also traded a rookie who had promise and wasn’t played much. Basically, we traded 2 1st round picks for Hinrich= Not good!

Here’s another Jamal trade possibility that would help the Hawks:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=46cd34q

Grant Hill is at least as effective as Marvin, and Pietrus is a solid wing defender who can knock down the 3 and has shown an ability to get to the free throw line in the past. As with the previous two trades I posted, both players are expiring. Siler has to be thrown in to make the numbers work, though, and he’s signed through next season.

The only thing that makes me nervous about this trade is JC2.

I really think this kid could end up being pretty good. And just when he blossoms, I bet Hinrich will have fallen off.

Hinrich’s just Mike Bibby Jr., meaning he’s another stop-gap. He’s not even a true point. So, what this trade does is swap out Mike Bibby for a younger Mike Bibby with better defensive skills.

This move’s good if they can make something else happen, possibly ship Jamal.

Otherwise, you still have no true PG and two combo gaurds with JJ in the backcourt.

I’m hoping Teague makes Mike Bibby an after thought tonight though.

Bibby going is OK, but Jordan Crawford plus a pick for 2 ‘average-good but nowhere near great’ players… gave up too much. With Evans gone, we only have Marvin for the 3 spot really. Since Jordan was going to be the next Jamal, what happens if Jamal asks for too much money and we can’t sign him next year? Then we’re in a hole with not much scoring off the bench, if any, and we’re not going to get to use a pick to help remedy the situation.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=638yg2x

You get rid of Bibbys contract with a bench player that could be good in crawford but has no where to play consistantly here. the hawks upgraded at point without giving up any major pieces and the first round pick is going to be in the 20’s anyway where its really hard to get a contributing player anyway. big dave:

Gotta’ shed the malaise of this WIZARDS season like losing a cheap suit.

Folks you know I’ve been down on MIKE BIBBY [as in negatory, good buddy] since he came to the ATL. Fact is, he had to be in the conversation because the J-WOW rook had no back-up. That’s right, HINRICH WAS the back-up one. We had a d-leaguer on two ten day’s [SHAKUR}, but he got hurt [pretty bad ankle], and we needed someone who didn’t hop as he dribbled the ball upcourt. Hence right now, BIBBY is gold for the D.C. team.

At the three, we have JOSH HOWARD playing on one leg recovering from a GILBERT ARENAS-type injury, and a marginally effective, but brittle AL THORNTON [ankle, finger, now ankle again tonight]. The emergency players were rookie TREVOR BOOKER who I like VERY much, but is a four, and another d-leaguer from last season CARTIER MARTIN who has his moments when the other team plays no defense. Enter MO EVANS which I think will provide depth only. Do you think he can play? I haven’t seen much burn from him as a HAWK. I see he’s pulling two more assists to turnovers, so that’s a plus.

The key player in this trade from the WIZARDS end is JORDAN CRAWFORD. In essence, the WIZZIES have replaced CAPTAIN KIRK with two players, one leaving the building [BIBBY] and the other hopefully coming into his own [CRAWFORD]. He will back-up NICK YOUNG, and I think/hope ultimately will supplant him as a regular for WASHINGTON. YOUNG is streaky, and only effective in certain situations against slow-footed two’s.

The clincher is the first round pick which the D.C. club desperately needs to improve.

Now the flip side.

The HAWKS got a c/f in HILTON ARMSTRONG who unfortunately for HOTLANTA fans did not impress me this season. He saw limited action despite the WIZARDS obvious need for a center to run with McGEE. That should tell you a lot, but if the coaching is as inept as most distressed WIZARDS fans believe, he might pan out as a HAWKSTER. I think not, but would love to be pleasantly surprised.

KIRK HINRICH is a tough-minded combo guard running mainly at the two. He can fill in at the one, and be effective only on occasion. He plays good defense, but fleet-footed one’s or two’s break him down off the dribble. He’s fine on perimeter defense against the average, to below average one or two. He could defend BIBBY pretty well as an example. He’s smart, and he’s a team-oriented guy all the way. A solid citizen in a b-ball sense. I think he will be an asset to the HAWKS in the two-three year range. He is starting to show wear around the edges however, and I do not think he can carry the freight at the two alone. And definitely not at the one. The WIZ tried that when WALL went down. It didn’t work well.

So take this analysis for what it’s worth folks, just one man’s opinion, and GO HAWKS. You know I’m with you even though I’m stuck here at ground zero following the WIZARDS?……not.

Oh, and you can see me regularly over on DAVID O’BRIEN’s blog with the BRAVES, AMERICA’s TEAM.

Maybe they will shock us with one more last minute trade. Why give up a #1 in the deal for a PG? because the hawks have used multiple picks on PG’s and havent came up with one as good as Hinrich. Consider it as drafting a PG with our first round pick this year. The hawks would not have drafted one any better. So what now? We still need a center and we need to run and run the offense like it was the last few years if the Hinrich trade dont help enough….if the team’s game dont improve in the next month, LD better go back to the old offense or FIRE his arse!

Nice strong drive by Teague to start the half. This is the second time in the game he has gone inside and intentionally drawn contact to draw a foul. He’s already arguably the best Hawk at doing that, which is pretty sad.

The lone reason they’re even down 9-11 is because Teague has come out asserted himself.

That was the knock on him before tonight. He was too timid, too passive.

Whether he’s a legit starting PG in this league, that’s up for debate.

But for him to have been completely shut out these past couple seasons, I’ll never get that. He’s clearly good enough to contribute, whether it be in a starting role, or a backup role. He’s good enough.

And it helps when he’s getting burn with guys who know how to play, not bums like Zaza – Mo Evans – Josh Powell, etc.

Great trade. Good job by Sund. Yes, I hate to lose JC2 and a 1st pick. And the 1st pick is just because we have a Coach who seems to only like vet G’s, and vet players. He doesn’t seem interested in developing a 17-22 pick, which seems where we are headed.

The salaries work ok. And who knows. Armstrong may help us.

Now I hope either Jamal gets traded or somehow we get Sessions. Trading Mo’, I’m not sure we won’t try to get Manny Harris.

But Sund heard us. He knew the only way LD wouldn’t play Bibby and Mo’ was to trade them. Good move Sund.

And whoever thinks Teague is having a bad game – he’s not. Dude is playing ok for what he is. A 22 year old #19 pick. We still lose Jamal next year, so Teague will get his chance. And Hinrich will be 31 or something . Good job keeping Teague. I might would give him up to get Sessions. And we still have 2 second picks in 2011 and 2012

Earlier in the game, the Hawks were getting torched on those pick and rolls. When they rotated to help out on the pick and roll, Nash would find an open guy beyond the arc, and the Suns weren’t missing many looks tonight.

Roger

February 23rd, 2011
11:26 pm

I’m saying it now: Time to give up the 50-win crown. Most of the team looks like they’ve given up on coach Drew (can’t blame them) and the team. Joe is playing like garbage and showing why his free agent signing this off-season was one of the worst of all time, meanwhile Marvin continues to remind us what a bad move it was to select him #2 overall, and without Bibby to kick around after every loss, most likely Marvin will be taking an even bigger beating from the fans now. Not to mention, Josh will probably get a large amount of criticism. Don’t expect Hinrich to just come in and fix all of this either.

Right now, I’m just trying to decide what the biggest mistake the team made this offseason was. Was it signing Joe to a max contract or was it signing Larry Drew? Both guys have been huge disappointments, but at least Drew’s contract is miniscule and easy to absorb. A real organization would have fired him already. Joe, on the other hand, is virtually untradeable with that awful contract, so I guess Joe’s contract was the worst move.

Kirk Hinrich Scouting report on SB Nation

Assets * Tough, gritty, and an intense competitor. Has a nice shooting stroke from mid-range and the free-throw line. An excellent passer. Plays above-average man-to-man defense.

Flaws

* Streaky, and commits a few too many turnovers. Not much of a rebounder. Occasionally lets his intensity boil over and takes bad fouls. Too often he falls in love with his three-point shot.

Career Potential

* All-round near-star combo guard & leader.
* Awards2006NBA – Second All-Defensive Team2003NBA – First All-Rookie Team

Well the good news is that we didn’t lose by 20 and the bad news is that we lost. The “smoove” played a good game and a stupid game at the same time, go figure. Can Marvin Williams play at all, he rarely scores well, rebounds appear to be a distant thought and his defense is bigtime suspect. We did make a trade, lets see how it goes because it can’t be as bad as we already are. The SOFT’S are one ugly playing team and if management don’t get rid of more of these so-called players they will ruin the one good thing we have and that’s Al. NY is lacking a lot of things, but they have enough firepower to win a lot of game and they have a great veteran leader with Chauncey now. We have Al and Josh, that’s about it. Joe is playing like he should be in the d-league right now, and no one else on the team is even worth mentioning, unless you want to give Damien credit for his effort. Hinrich is a solid upgrade over Bibby at the point, but he’s going to have a hell of a time trying to compete against elite guards in the playoffs if we make it there. We need something big to go down before the deadline, and we need to get rid of Drew ASAP.

Rev – Teague struggled a little early, but picked it up as the game went on. Of course, LD didn’t trust him to play after the 3rd Quarter. But he really kept the Hawks in it in the 3rd. He was the only one trying for a little while actually..

Big Dave,

Thanks for taking time to give me an update. I really appreciate it!

Its striking to me, even though I did not see the game, that the Hawks did not get blown out. In fact, from the box score it looks like the Hawks only got beat in the second quarter. And I saw the last minute of the game so I think I heard that the Suns outscored the Hawks 12-3 in the final minutes of the game. Am I wrong to conclude that replacing Bibby plugged the leak in the defense that lead to the recent blowouts?

Joe hasn’t scored more than 14 points in the last SIX games.

In those six games: 29-74 (.39%) and 4-16 from 3 (.25%)

But here is the killer: In six games, 74 FGA but only 8 FTA!

At two FTA per foul that means Joe, in six games, has shot the ball 74 times and only drawn 4 fouls. FOUR!

I wouldn’t have thought that was even possible in the NBA. Can you say non-aggressive?

Our record in those games? 1-5

Flaws

It’s all about the expiring deal. Jamal clears $11 million in salary for any team that trades for him.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4m6ravx

Apparently the Pistons are reluctant to do trades unless they are dollar-for-dollar, due to their in-flux ownership situation, but this trade would save them money this season and next. Food for thought: Say that the trade deadline comes and goes tomorrow without the Wizards shipping Bibby to a contender. Does Bibby approach the Wizards’ front office and ask for a buyout, a la Ilgauskas last year? If so, do we want him back? I can’t speak for Bibby, who would be giving up a lot of money (not to mention his Bird rights) if he agrees to a buyout. To him, the issue is whether he prefers playoff appearances to dollars at this point in his career. But if I’m the Hawks, I’m hoping he does.

I think that Kirk Hinrich’s defense has got to be better than Bibby’s, without a doubt. this is how we can get rid of Marvin Williams and ZAZA Pachulia
and get a Starting aggressive center Marc Gasol
and a back up power forward and a shooting guard , (back up)

starting five would be
Kirk Hinrich
Joe Johnson
Josh Smith
Al Horford
Marc Gasol

back ups be
Jeff teague, jamal Crawford, Damien Wilkins, craig smith, and Jason collins

i think thats a pretty good team going into the playoffs… and if we wanna trade people next year.. we still have some pieces to do it , and a few expiring contracts !!!

In this case, any trade is better than no trade! Look, last night the Hawks were no worse off with Jeff Teague as the point guard than they have been with Mike Bibby. Jordon Crawford and Jeff Teague really have not been developed as guards by Hawks coaching. There have been other young guards on the Hawks roster in years past that have failed here, but moved on to have success with other teams. Jason Terry is one name that comes to mind, but there have been others.

The deal wasn’t bad, we gave up Bibby who can’t play defense at all and JC2 who is a scorer but obviously they don’t see much coming out of him and Mo Evans which I am not even sure what he does for the team. They got Hinrich who is a serviceable 1 or 2 guard and got a big which is what they desperately needed, plus Hinrich can play defense.

Basically all this trade does is the same thing it did in ‘08 when we got Bibby. Hinrich is the same age pretty much Bibby was when we first got him and three years later Hinrich will be the same age as Bibby is now. Also, we had Acie Law at the time and he’s comparable to where Jeff Teague is now. So I guess in 3 years we’ll be essentially look to do the same trade again and have another Law/Teague type at the PG??? I sure hope not. The front office needs to get a young *promising* PG NOW!

All of you who believe this trade is good should be slapped across the face just like our GM. Granted Bibby blows on defense and hinrich is a plus for the defensive side. But in all honesty lets break the trade down more than that. We just gave up a young talent in jordan crawford who is a pure scorer. We never even gave him a chance to show what he can do. He will be a force in this game at one point in his career. He knows how to score and we gave that up for hinrich and armstrong are you kidding me. Not only that but we gave them cash and a first round draft pick. How in the hell is that a beneficial or an even trade. Im pretty positive hinrich wont be bringing us a championship anytime soon. All in all the hawks front office should be embarrassed. If you want to see how not to run a franchise just look at the hawks.

I have to laugh when I read people on here poopoo’ing the trade just because ESPN is not talking about it.

Probably gave up too much with the first rounder being in there. But recent history says the Hawks would just waste that pick anyways so no matter. Hinrich is probably about as best as you could hope for given what the teams needs are. Nash would have been ideal, and I don’t understand why Pheonix isn’t dealing him. But barring Nash, you needed a hard noses pass first PG who can shoot when needed and not get destroyed on defense every time down the court. I think that’s Hinrich. If Armstrong can contribute at all as a big off the bench I feel like it’s a good trade.

Sund resigned 3 players a year ago. Bibby, Marvin, and Zaza. I said at that time he set this organization back “5 years” with those signings. The whole “core” thing has come back to bite him. Why are we now talking about trading those same 3 players. Sund should be fired for this reason alone, but he can survive becomes we have ownership that doesnt know any better.
I remember New Orleans traded Tysoon Chandler to Charlotte for a bag of basketballs and they then traded him to Dallas for some old sweat pants Tree Rollins used to wear. Marcus Camby was traded from Denver to Portland for large sprite and some pretzels.
Baron Davis and Deron Williams was traded yesterday at the PG position and we got Kirk Hinrich. I am through with them until this ownership and GM group is gone I will not support this team.

MC, backing up my assessment of the Hawks (and I say LD)

‘Michael Cunningham:

Moving Jordan and the first-round pick is the latest indication the Hawks, when push comes to shove, are more focused on making moves they think will help now vs. player and asset development in the future.”

SteveW

John Hollinger’s reaction to the trade:

“John Hollinger gave the Hawks a B:

As far as need goes, it’s tough to do better than this. Atlanta Hawks fans who have spent half a decade watching their point guards get torched night after night will now have to cope with the shocking sight of Hinrich competently defending opponents at either guard spot.”

sam'

February 24th, 2011
11:59 am

Now I’ll have to learn to spell Hinrich. The question is asked…..how does this make a better team? Well, for months, the point guard issue has been….Bibby is too old (or physically hobbled) to defend other point guards and that kills Atlanta’s defense with other people trying to make up his weakness. Hinrich will solve that problem. He plays defense. The other rap was Bibby doesn’t set up and run the offense in the manner of a physically fit point guard. Hinrich isn’t afraid to hustle and drive and is smart. So, in the short haul, there’s your answer. You now have a point guard and someone who isn’t a defensive liability.

I like Bibby…..but signing a new contract with the Hawks and suddenly “going lame” really screwed this team. I don’t think Sund is to blame for Bibby’s physical problems except maybe lacking the intuition to ferret it out or an escape clause in the contract to deal with something like this.

Frickin’ Evans. He showed he could play a few years ago, then funked out when he was bypassed. Good point……He actually spoke out at one time about the “unspoken problem” with the Hawks. Bad point…..I think he could have been a really good player had he worked harder and stayed focused. just an impression..

JC….probably a better project than Teague….and the first round draft pick…….other bloggers saying the Hawks would probably have screwed that up anyway, so it’s okay…….WRONG……Good teams use their draft picks and develop players or trade up to better picks and then put together a package deal for great players…..though I appreciate the frustration, and why am I on a day old blog anyway?

Just to let you know I don’t think a skinny white guy with guts is such a bad trade even though you lost a draft pick you shouldn’t have…
….

Larry Drew commenting on Jeff Teague last night at Phoenix:

Larry Drew on Jeff Teague:

“I thought he came out aggressive in attack mode and used his speed and quickness. We need that. I thought he did a tremendous job breaking the defense down and getting to the basket. That’s the way he has to play. Don’t worry about turning the basketball over, just keep the pressure on the defense.”

So that’s why you only played him 19 minutes, and not at all in the 4th. Got it.

“When Jordan Crawford saw his playing time decrease upon Joe Johnson’s injury, it appeared he was on the typical young Hawk career path. Who knows what kind of player he’ll become but it’s hard to envision him becoming a useful player here. Same goes for whoever the Hawks would have picked late in this summer’s draft.”

The Hawks just don’t develop young players. They just don’t for whatever reason.

Here is a Wizard writer explaining why he thinks the Wizards made a lukewarm trade at best:

“Part of my issue here is that I don’t think Jordan Crawford is all that good. Crawford strikes me as one of those NCAA Tournament stars that gets overrated because people see him then. He hasn’t played very much this year, but when he has, it hasn’t been pretty (7.5 PER, 42.1% TS%, an astronomical 27.9% usage rate). Granted, it’s 160 minutes, he’s been hurt and he’s still just 22, but the only real flashes that we’ve seen is him going crazy in a preseason game against the Wizards. I’m also confused about his long-term projected role. Is he a Nick Young replacement? Is he a point guard? Is he instant offense off the bench at a cheaper price than Young? I just don’t see a built-in role for him in the future.”

I think a lot of you are forgetting one thing. Hinrich is intelligent. He’ll listen to the coach, size up his team, and find ways to get the ball to the players, in good shooting positions, quickly, on a consistent basis. Then, he’ll implement what HE knows about the game. So you’ll have bonafide should be stars, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford, and occasionally Crawford seeing the ball in positive situations. In this case, overwhelming athletic ability may not be as important as fitting in and seeing the whole thing flow. Maybe we can even find a shot or two for Marvin Williams and wake him up although if I read Mr. Williams, he thinks he’s doing just fine and is waiting to get out of this city. Unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to skate ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE LEAGUE.

As for as the defense, the whole blog has been whining about Bibby’s lack of defense. If Hinrich is still serious about playing hard, maybe this will be worth 10 points or so a game, just five baskets that maybe someone will get in the way of or put a hand up at the right time to stop. MC had the guts to say it…Hawks only play defense for maybe a guarter a game…….

This is an idealized version of how this trade could work out, and Hinrich is probably already thinking this way…..

If anyone remembers last year, we had the energy and brilliance to beat every NBA team at least once (except OKC). It’s basically the same team. We beat teams with Lebron, Dwayne, Kobe, Deron, Boston (4 times), Tim Duncan…….Carmelo, Amare, blah, blah…..We just didn’t have the brains to figure out Orlando………

So there is a chance this will work out…….

Now as far as the slackers and bad boys on the team……who I now consider Smith, Williams, J. Johnson (actually he’s in a world of his own), and Crawford (who could be better as he proved last year)……..as far as these guys……..they might not want to be successful…..if the new skinny white guy shows them up in effort, hustle, drive, heart and ability to win basketball games.

But the talent is there. and the Hawks now have a point guard who is both intelligent (as was Bibby) and reasonably healthy, with a track record of giving his soul to the game.

That’s how this COULD work out.

Ship pachulia out…..either save Crawford for next year somehow or ship him out.

Whoever said we could have have Deron for Jamal and draft pick……..is that really true? I mean it looks good in retrospect but was anything EVER SAID to indicate that COULD have happened.

Maybe it’s being part of the country that was defeated and burned to the ground and demoralized that produces this attitude. (Hell no, I’m not defending slavery) But it seems to me the ability to trade is based on the perception of strength and weakness, and the Hawks are ALWAYS in a position of weakness, even when they have great players. Why do the Hawks always seem to get burned in a trade……why don’t WE get Amare, Deron or Carmelo…….

I think it’s mental……and we project, we are perceived….and likewise, even know there are mountains and diversity, the stars don’t want to come here……

Heck, Boston was a horrible team before the sweetheart McHale-Aingle deal that sent Garnett to Beantown, then Ray Allen warmed up to the idea…….Miami is cool enough to lure Bosh and the Kingly One……LA…..No one can tell me that the league didn’t overlook gross tampering when Jerry West decided to gamble the Bus’ financial empire, Staples and the Laker franchise on signing Shaq. The trick was you COULDN’T ASK Shaq is he would sign before you gave away players to gain the contract leverage to sign Shaq…..but somehow it all worked out……

Because LA was percieved as cool.

New York gets Carmelo because it is cool.

New Jersey was not cool, but a Russian billionaire will make it cool with a whopping real estate deal and a return to new york.

Atlanta is “not cool” Perhaps it’s not really the “New York of the South.” Maybe it’s like an “overgrown Birmingham.” At any rate, it is neither the basketball capitol of the South nor a true media capital,or the preferred destination of star basketball players, which unfortunately AS MUCH AS THE DRAFT is now a deciding factor in a successful NBA franchise.

No criticism from the peanut gallery please. …….My heart’s in the right place. I want the Hawks to win..

BIG D, What do you want? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pipen????

—-
How about a competent ownership and mgmt group for starters. Ive followed this team since 1980 and ever since (1) Nique trade for Manning in 93 and (2) the dismantling of the 99 team with Smitty, Mutombo, Mookie, etc that led to the 10 year playoff drought.
ASG is a complete joke of an ownership group. Our GMs are horrible and we havent had a decent coach since Lenny. Woody got fortunate his last 3 years and that was because of BIBBY. Prior to that what he won 13 games, 29 games and 33 games ……and was on the way to being fired.
Some of you Bibby haters have convenient memories

I agree with your assessment with this organization, but if they are using the hawks as a losing asset for tax breaks, the Hawks will never be great. Just ho hum.

Enough with the complaints about giving up Mo Evans. Mo Evans had become about as worthless as he could be. I can’t remember the last time he made a jumper, and to me it always seemed he has some chip on his shoulder because he wasn’t a starter. He’s just not that good. Damian Wilkins is better at playing that role than Evans ever was. No loss there whatsoever.

I’m just hoping Hinrich is enough of a hard nosed tough guy to force this team back into the motion offense that LD hyped so much in the offseason. The team has reverted back into iso jump shot mode as of late. Even Horford has fallen victim. If the Hawks will get back to not standing around on offense, attacking the hoop, and running the court they will be fine. Are they championship contenders? Probably not. But people, the reality is as long as Kobe is in the league with decent talent around him, any other team will be extremely LUCKY to get a ring.

This team passed on Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Brandon Roy, now give up first rounder + first round pick for 30 y.o guard. Sine qua non of good GM is ability to draft and find talent. Never win trying to trade for aging vets.

1) Never liked Kirk
2) If Josh continues to attempt to play point guard and 2 guard, maybe we DO need another leaper? – or a coach who can control Josh

Bibby created a domino effect, one the was not good. With a perimeter defender that can defend, everybody gets to guard their own man, and the Hawks will improve dramatically. It might be enough to win a few in the second round.

What’s our biggest weakness? Getting destroyed by teams with able point guards. Hinrich for Bibby = Problem solved.

Typical southern white man thinking. Let’s go see if we can get a white boy (Hinrich) to run the black, even if he is the worse candidate for the job. He will fit in good with the confederate flags in good ole Cumming, GA..

Anybody else think Josh Smith has star level talent but becomes disengaged when things don’t go his way? He appears to be just an attitude adjustment away from being an all-star!

Followed the Hawks since Lou Hudson but lack of consistent effort is turning me away. I don’t expect to win every game but can’t stand beiing “blown out”!

Man….I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo HAPPY!!!! We finally got a legit PG that will actually penetrate the lanes and make good decisions with the ball, instead of passing the ball to JJ or JC to watch them pound the wood for 18-19 sec. Hinrich will get everyone involved in the offense PLUS play defense….something Bibby could not do. And hopefully he can properly help develop Teague. Yes, this will not get us to the NBA Finals this year, but we are now a better team. I hate we gave away Jordan Crawford, but hopefully we can find a young player with that much talent in the off-season.

^5 to ya Mike and I wish you the best. Now we all will be able to see if there is cohesion amongst the “SOFT’S”. Here are 5 questions (1) Will that “smoove” person run the floor and toss his point guard skills out the window and stop the poundin looking to make a terrific pass (2) will ISO Joe keep the ball moving and not bog the motion offense down “pound, pound, pound”. By the way, Phoenix showed us what a true motion offense is; (3)Will Marvin Williams try and rebound, drive to the basket as a man and take that fuggin leg kick out of his shot (too much effort) to shoot (4) will Jeff Teague finally emerge, I do think he is a talent (5) will Zsa Zsa just bang, rebound, take his put backs and stop trying to be something he is not.

Someone said Josh Smith does not play with heart and gives up too easily when the Hawks are losing. I agree with him getting frustrated, not so much about the giving up part. He gets angry when they are losing, but his biggest problem is that he loves Joe Johnson. I think maybe Josh Powell got not to play one game because he may have told Joe he wasn’t worth all the money the Hawks paid him: “conduct detrimental to the team”. Joe, you have a shinning moment here and htere, but you really are not worth the money the Hawks paid for you. They keep calling Joe “our leader”, but I think Josh and Boss know he’s not worthy of that title. He tried to take the game over the other day when the Hawks needed a basket and ended up running over somebody and committing a foul. He made a 3 point shot when the team needed a couple of points in a hurry, but that’s just one of those shinning moments that come too seldom. I wonder how many players in the league look at Joe when they play against the Hawks and say, man, you stole that money. Deron Williams, Rose, Durant, even Wesbrook are great players, Joe Johnson is not!

ZaZa put backs? What ZaZa put backs. I haven’t seen enough to remember any. He got no lift, he does not handle or protect the ball well, and, thus, gets blocked almost every time. What put backs? I feel better about our chances when ZaZa does not play. His time for helping the Hawks, like Bibby and Mo Evans is over. None of those 3, except for the ocassional good night of a barrage of 3 pointers from Bibby did much in a consistent basis. ZaZa comes in commits 2 quick fouls and checks his bank account. He’s never in long enough and when he is no one passes him the ball because they know he’ll mishandle it or miss most shots. Even ZaZa himself can;t wait to get rid of the ball when it ends up in his hands and don;t you think the other teams know what we know about ZaZa? Why are Hawks fans giving ZaZa more credit than he deserves? At least Bibby got us a win from time to time.

how do you give up two first round picks in j. crawford and your 2011 pick for a 30 years old guard who could not crack the washington wizards starting line up. somebody, anybody, send a deliver to atlanta, the fans deserve better basketball minds. outside of teague, and that is not saying much, the hawks have no young talents developing on their bench. this is a sign of bad things to come for this team. tirer of the good old boy club. this organization have no clue what it takes to be a winner. the only hope the fans of atlanta have is that the spirit owners sell the team.

Hey blogman……I think I overreacted to your message last night, and this is an official apology……it’s just when someone called another human being “garbage” and is talking about their race that I naturally assumed you were evil.

But I figured it out. You are pissed because people like myself have put forth the possibility that a non superstar white player, Hinrich, can lead a bunch of relatively high caliber black players into the promised land as if he were Jesus Christ.

Let’s look at this rationally. The Hawks, a team I have followed for 55 years, are LOST. Joe Johnson and Al Horford keep saying it’s tough, they are no excuses, they don’t know why the effort isn’t there. They sound absolutely LOST man. LD sounds lost, as if he no longer feels he can make it work. Who knows what upper management is saying but I have a good idea it’s lost with gloss.

They’re losing games right and left……lost one by what 50 points? lost a 22 point lead…..act as though they just lie down and give up on their home floor. The team is LOST, black or not. .

So if someone now joints the organization who has played highly organized team basketball successfully whose job it will be to distribute the ball into the right places to our highly talented crew,, it should be a blessing. Bibby unfortunately can no longer perform. Best that he go his own way.

Hinrich could facilitate the whole thing as a living, breathing point guard.

Doesn’t mean he better because he be white……means that he’s been trained already for a role the Hawks need and he hasn’t yet been crushed by whatever spiritual disease the Hawks have. .

Anyway, keep up the superior blogging….and maybe this team will do better…….Sorry I jumped on you. ……

Thanks to Bibby for making the Hawks better for a few years but it was time to go. Hinrich can hopefully defend and is about the same player only younger. Jordan and draft pick were probably worthless (like Teague and Zaza). Big problem is still there in Larry Drew. Teams that don’t rebound or Play D will not win and that starts at the Coach. Is Woodson available to finish the season and kick some @#$es and make these guys care? How about Bobby Knight?? Some of these guys need chokin’

Sund should be fired because the 3 names that were rumored to be traded were all players he recently signed. Bibby Zaza and Marvin. Those signings set us back very bad. He should have traded all of them when they had expiring contracts. We should have got baron davis instead on Hinrinch.

Why is everyone complaining so much.. Do you watch basketball at all or just highlights on sports center. This is a great trade that makes lots of sense. Kirks numbers have gone up yearly for the most part. He shoots career +.500 from the field and he is not great but a good three point shooter. He is a gritty, tough, hard working player that I believe will help Atlanta over the hump. Yes they gave up another 1st round pick that can be a good one. Yes years ago the hawks drafted Pau Gasol and have history with overlooking some talent. The key here is the east is more top heavy than recent years and this is a trade that the organization needed for a payoff run. Hawks need a true center (love ya horford) and hello finals

Well tonight will give us a lil hint of what may come. I bet that “smoove” person do that dumb point guard thing he does or stay near the 3 point line when he should be inside banging. Has Marvin ever thought about shooting in and around the top of the key, say like from 15 to 10 feet away from the basket and maybe even rebound. What I think we are going to see is “STOOPID” ball again. I hope not but keeping that “smoove” fella means dumb basketball again, he definitely wants to be Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, he must be a comic book reader. I want to see what the ISO Joe gonna do. Here’s a hint an clue…..”POUND….POUND….POUND”. Well I have my Maalox sitting here already, just thinking about being blown out upsets my stomach. I really do hope the “SOFT’S” earn their paycheck but we will see. Does not matter if they are in disagreement with the coaches philosophy, they gettin paid to do it and execute it properly but then again, maybe learning is foreign to them, at least to that “smoove” fella and the “POUNDER”.
