Atlanta Hawks: Bibby for Hinrich in five-player deal

What do you think about the Hawks' trade?

Phoenix–After striking out in their efforts to acquire point guards Devin Harris and Raymond Felton, the Hawks agreed to terms with the Wizards on a trade for veteran Kirk Hinrich and athletic big man Hilton Armstrong, the team announced tonight.

As part of the deal, the Hawks sent Mike Bibby, rookie Jordan Crawford, swingman Mo Evans and their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Wizards.

Bibby, Crawford and Evans were informed of the trade prior to the team’s game against Phoenix tonight. Jeff Teague replaced Bibby in the starting lineup.

Hawks coach Larry Drew declined to comment on the trade before the game because it wasn’t yet official.

The Bulls selected Hinrich, 30, with the seventh overall pick out of Kansas in the 2003 draft. The Bulls traded him to Washington last summer along with Kevin Seraphin.

The Hawks expect Hinrich to shore up their weak perimeter defense, which has put stress on the team defense as players constantly scramble to help against dribble penetration. Like Bibby, Hinrich is a good spot-up shooter but is a better playmaker off the dribble and should help Atlanta’s fast break.

The Hawks also hope Hinrich (6-4, 190), who’s earned a reputation as a hard-nosed player, will provide toughness and leadership. He and Marvin Williams went at it during a game in Chicago last season, with both earning technical fouls.

“I’ve always been a super fan of Kirk,” Williams said. “Watching him at Kansas, he just competes, man. In college, coach [Roy] Williams would always make reference to Kirk Hinrich and say he has that toughness and that attitude.”

Armstrong (6-11, 235 pounds) is limited offensively and doesn’t rebound well for his size. But he’s an athletic leaper who could find a role helping the Hawks protect the rim, which also is a weakness (especially when Josh Smith is not in the game).

“I think in the paint he can block some shots and be able to add that inside presence and help us out down there a little bit,” Smith said.

The trade is another move for the Hawks that could help them now at the expense of future flexibility and development of young players.

Both Armstrong and Evans’ contracts expire after the season. Hinrich is scheduled to make $8 million next season compared to salaries of $6.2 million for Bibby and $1.1 million for Crawford . That would add roughly $700,000 to Atlanta’s estimated $65 million in committed salaries for 2011-12.

The Hawks also had to part with the draft pick and Crawford, whom they acquired in a draft night trade in 2010 after the Nets selected him No. 27 overall. The shooting guard had played sparingly this season, appearing in just 16 of 56 games.

Finally, the trade is the latest indication that the Hawks don’t intend to give Teague a larger role. Teague, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 draft, had played in 46 of 56 games for an average of 11.6 minutes entering the game tonight.

The Hawks acquired Hinrich after a wide search for a trading partner in an urgent attempt to acquire a point guard.

A league source with knowledge of Atlanta’s inquiries said the team tried to swing a trade for Harris before the Nets sent him to Utah in a deal that got them All-Star Deron Williams. The source said the Hawks also were rebuffed when they inquired about point guard Raymond Felton after New York traded him to the Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.

The Hawks also had interest in Cleveland point guard Ramon Sessions, according to the source.

This is why the Hawks still won’t get anywhere in the playoffs…

They still remain a jumpshooting team. They started off the game getting the ball inside.

Since, they’ve stayed perimeter.

big dave:

Gotta’ shed the malaise of this WIZARDS season like losing a cheap suit.

Folks you know I’ve been down on MIKE BIBBY [as in negatory, good buddy] since he came to the ATL. Fact is, he had to be in the conversation because the J-WOW rook had no back-up. That’s right, HINRICH WAS the back-up one. We had a d-leaguer on two ten day’s [SHAKUR}, but he got hurt [pretty bad ankle], and we needed someone who didn’t hop as he dribbled the ball upcourt. Hence right now, BIBBY is gold for the D.C. team.

At the three, we have JOSH HOWARD playing on one leg recovering from a GILBERT ARENAS-type injury, and a marginally effective, but brittle AL THORNTON [ankle, finger, now ankle again tonight]. The emergency players were rookie TREVOR BOOKER who I like VERY much, but is a four, and another d-leaguer from last season CARTIER MARTIN who has his moments when the other team plays no defense. Enter MO EVANS which I think will provide depth only. Do you think he can play? I haven’t seen much burn from him as a HAWK. I see he’s pulling two more assists to turnovers, so that’s a plus.

The key player in this trade from the WIZARDS end is JORDAN CRAWFORD. In essence, the WIZZIES have replaced CAPTAIN KIRK with two players, one leaving the building [BIBBY] and the other hopefully coming into his own [CRAWFORD]. He will back-up NICK YOUNG, and I think/hope ultimately will supplant him as a regular for WASHINGTON. YOUNG is streaky, and only effective in certain situations against slow-footed two’s.

The clincher is the first round pick which the D.C. club desperately needs to improve.

Now the flip side.

The HAWKS got a c/f in HILTON ARMSTRONG who unfortunately for HOTLANTA fans did not impress me this season. He saw limited action despite the WIZARDS obvious need for a center to run with McGEE. That should tell you a lot, but if the coaching is as inept as most distressed WIZARDS fans believe, he might pan out as a HAWKSTER. I think not, but would love to be pleasantly surprised.

KIRK HINRICH is a tough-minded combo guard running mainly at the two. He can fill in at the one, and be effective only on occasion. He plays good defense, but fleet-footed one’s or two’s break him down off the dribble. He’s fine on perimeter defense against the average, to below average one or two. He could defend BIBBY pretty well as an example. He’s smart, and he’s a team-oriented guy all the way. A solid citizen in a b-ball sense. I think he will be an asset to the HAWKS in the two-three year range. He is starting to show wear around the edges however, and I do not think he can carry the freight at the two alone. And definitely not at the one. The WIZ tried that when WALL went down. It didn’t work well.

So take this analysis for what it’s worth folks, just one man’s opinion, and GO HAWKS. You know I’m with you even though I’m stuck here at ground zero following the WIZARDS?……not.

Oh, and you can see me regularly over on DAVID O’BRIEN’s blog with the BRAVES, AMERICA’s TEAM.

These crazy azz trades going down just CONFIRM 1 thing. LOCKOUT! By this time next year guys from the Boys Club will be playing in the NBA. The Hawks DEAL is the biggest joke of all though. Bibby was through 2 years ago. Anybody with sight can tell Jamal Crawford has the Hawks on a string. He is the reason the struggle and short comings of Bibby became un watch able. The Hawks are getting burnt by Crawford for not getting an extension. Plus he walks at the end of the year. How about the ASG Sund and LD all walk with him?? Do a REAL BLOWUP!!!

Really feels like this was a trade just to make a trade. Maybe the positive here is that Hinrich is younger than Bibby. Maybe shaking things up a bit will rejuvenate the team. Gut feeling is this does nothing to help.

I was mad the Hawks didn’t trade Josh Smith, I wanna trade everyone except for Al Horford, I can’t stand Joe Johnson and the fact that we gave him 120 million dollars, he can’t shoot and is HIGHLY overrated.Hawks are no longer fun to watch ever since Josh Smith starting taking Jump shots.
I’m becoming Highly annoyed by them. They are joke and no one takes them seriously including myself.

FIRE SUND the trade he made today sucks and we gave way too much.

Nice close to the quarter. Bibby was only part of the problem. We still have no center, and 2 power forwards (one that shoots to many outside jumpers).

Whatever man…

Don’t worry, Kirk Hinrich will solve all of our problems.

I was happy to see Teague actually get minutes. Sucks that he gets pulled whenever Drew finds a reason to.

I still say get rid of Jamal ASAP and try to get something out of him.

A wing or a big would be huge.

Bibby had a good stint here and made us better each year. Only thing he did wrong is get old. Show him some respect. At least he was a real PG for us and a shooter from the PG position. Hope there is more to come on the trade front. It wasnt enough.

It looks like the hawks could have done much better with other potential trades but the waited too long.

Instead……they gave up their 2010 and 2011 1st round draft choices plus a good swingman, plus Bibby for Hinrich. Armstrong means zero. Basically 4 players for Hinrich. VERY strange trade.

With no Bibby (or Hinrich), Hawks will have a built in excuse as to why they got blown out. They will say they were short handed, and trying to adjust to not having Bibby…

Dont look now, but if the Hawks lose, and the knicks win, Knicks will be 4 games behind us in the loss column…
