Phoenix–After striking out in their efforts to acquire point guards Devin Harris and Raymond Felton, the Hawks agreed to terms with the Wizards on a trade for veteran Kirk Hinrich and athletic big man Hilton Armstrong, the team announced tonight.
As part of the deal, the Hawks sent Mike Bibby, rookie Jordan Crawford, swingman Mo Evans and their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Wizards.
Bibby, Crawford and Evans were informed of the trade prior to the team’s game against Phoenix tonight. Jeff Teague replaced Bibby in the starting lineup.
Hawks coach Larry Drew declined to comment on the trade before the game because it wasn’t yet official.
The Bulls selected Hinrich, 30, with the seventh overall pick out of Kansas in the 2003 draft. The Bulls traded him to Washington last summer along with Kevin Seraphin.
The Hawks expect Hinrich to shore up their weak perimeter defense, which has put stress on the team defense as players constantly scramble to help against dribble penetration. Like Bibby, Hinrich is a good spot-up shooter but is a better playmaker off the dribble and should help Atlanta’s fast break.
The Hawks also hope Hinrich (6-4, 190), who’s earned a reputation as a hard-nosed player, will provide toughness and leadership. He and Marvin Williams went at it during a game in Chicago last season, with both earning technical fouls.
“I’ve always been a super fan of Kirk,” Williams said. “Watching him at Kansas, he just competes, man. In college, coach [Roy] Williams would always make reference to Kirk Hinrich and say he has that toughness and that attitude.”
Armstrong (6-11, 235 pounds) is limited offensively and doesn’t rebound well for his size. But he’s an athletic leaper who could find a role helping the Hawks protect the rim, which also is a weakness (especially when Josh Smith is not in the game).
“I think in the paint he can block some shots and be able to add that inside presence and help us out down there a little bit,” Smith said.
The trade is another move for the Hawks that could help them now at the expense of future flexibility and development of young players.
Both Armstrong and Evans’ contracts expire after the season. Hinrich is scheduled to make $8 million next season compared to salaries of $6.2 million for Bibby and $1.1 million for Crawford . That would add roughly $700,000 to Atlanta’s estimated $65 million in committed salaries for 2011-12.
The Hawks also had to part with the draft pick and Crawford, whom they acquired in a draft night trade in 2010 after the Nets selected him No. 27 overall. The shooting guard had played sparingly this season, appearing in just 16 of 56 games.
Finally, the trade is the latest indication that the Hawks don’t intend to give Teague a larger role. Teague, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 draft, had played in 46 of 56 games for an average of 11.6 minutes entering the game tonight.
The Hawks acquired Hinrich after a wide search for a trading partner in an urgent attempt to acquire a point guard.
A league source with knowledge of Atlanta’s inquiries said the team tried to swing a trade for Harris before the Nets sent him to Utah in a deal that got them All-Star Deron Williams. The source said the Hawks also were rebuffed when they inquired about point guard Raymond Felton after New York traded him to the Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.
The Hawks also had interest in Cleveland point guard Ramon Sessions, according to the source.

I can’t believe some of you are crying about losing a late round draft pick. The Hawks will never make u guys happy. Crying over Bibby and a draft pick….smh
We could have gave up all of that and got Deron Williams, but with fans like you that are satisfied with this garbage pg Kirk Hinrich we will never get better

I generally don’t like giving up first round picks and young talent on rookie contracts either, but as bad as Sund is at drafting and as bad as Hawks coaches are at player development, I doubt the Hawks would have got anything meaningful out of Jordan or the first rounder anyway. No question to me this helps the Hawks short term, but Hinrich is by no means a long term solution at the point guard position.
What I’d really like to see is Teague play an evenly matched game with Nash tonight.

Glad to see Bibby gone but i do appreciate what he did when he came in a few years ago and helped us get over the hump in becoming a playoff team. I hope we have one more trade in us, i love Josh Smith but i think its time to move on. Josh Smith and Za Za to Golden State for Stephen Curry and Andris Biedrins.

I loved bibby but his time here was past. Not sure if Kirk is an upgrade as I remember his defense is pretty shaky and he has a itchy trigger finger. Time will tell though. Wonder if we are going to move marvin?

It’s not about if we can develop JC2 or the future first/ It’s the fact you give them BOTH up for Hinrich. He may be better than Bibby at this point, but not so much you should ever have to give up a promoising rook and a first.

Yeah, this looks like a sloppy trade(and I actually don’t think badly of Hilton Armstrong). What kind of rotations are we running with these two. I think this team will become more pedestrian – goodbye Josh – and thereby less entertaining.

I would have given up three players just to get Bibby off our hands, however, I am very disappointed that Jordan Crawford was part of the deal. He will be a very good player once he gets to develop his game.
The move was necessary because the team had so completely imploded these past several games, but it is not a move that will push the Hawks up the standings.
This is, as Big Ray might say, a reactionary move rather than proactive decision.
I do hope to see Teague get more playing time tonight – maybe even a start.

My thinking is the reason they are unloading so much is because they are not done trading. I have heard on the wires that the Hawks and Nuggets have been in talks with the Hawks getting Nene. Crossing my fingers this is true.

Garbage…what is your profession? Obviously you’re not a gm. Prove we could have gotten Deron Williams. The Nets gave a younger pg, higher talented PF, and a higher 1st. On top of that, you don’t know the financials of the deal. Why would the Jazz take our deal over the Nets? Think before you post something back. This isn’t your video game in your moms basement…..it’s real life.

Too much to give up for what we got. Hinrich is an improvement, but he’s not a big enough improvement to make this team a factor in the East.
I’ll give Sund some credit for at least doing something finally, but it’s not enough.

Regardless of what you might think of his talents, one thing Hinrich brings is some much needed toughness. Anybody else remember him running Rondo right into the table on the sidelines during the playoffs. Rondo SHOULD have gotten a tech for throwing an elbow. Hinrich gets in the heads of those he guards.
Can’t wait for some of that.

I guess all of us will be paying very close attention to the Wizards now eh?
I don’t dislike this trade at all. Even with the first rounder gone. We’ve improved our perimeter defense, got rid of Bibby and his contract and got rid of Mo Evans. Now you have to think about it. Now that Mo Evans is gone, we need to find another guard/forward to replace him.
I’d hate to say this….but dont be suprised that if within the next 18 hours….rumors of Josh Smith getting dealt start to swirl around.

Please, please, please take advantage of this opportunity Jeff.
Sund is in attendance to observe. Teague played decent minutes in yesterday’s game against the Lakers in garbage time.
If Teague impresses, maybe it spurs Sund to deal Jamal and expiring deals (the Hawks still have Powell, Etan, and Hilton Armstrong) for some legitimate help at SF or C.

@Point Guard
Could’ve given up the same and got Deron Williams??? Come on! Favors was #3 pick in draft and solid rotational player as rookie. Crawford was # 25 or so and barely saw the floor. And Harris is much better PG than Jamal- why else would we want him? And our #1 pick will be about 20 slots lower than NJs. No way we could have gotten Williams without giving up Jamal and Smoove, and Utah probably would not want Smoove.

Player wise this is a lateral move. We got no better and lost a rookie with a lot of potential. The fact that we just gave up a 1st round pick along with the lateral player move makes this a bad trade.

The thing I love the most about Hinrich is that he is feisty. He and Rondo REALLY got into it 2 years ago in the Playoffs. He has been in other altercations too. We need more players who will be a-holes out there, commit hard fouls, and make this team tougher. Don’t be surprised if Hinrich gets into a fight with a teammate in an intense practice soon

The crew on NBA TV is giving this trade a good grade. Yeah, the Hawks gave up a lot, but I’m glad that they didn’t give up Jamal Crawford. I hope they can keep find a way to keep him long-term.
Bibby may be past his prime, but I appreciate the contribution he made to the Hawks. I think he made them a solid playoff team. Wish we had gotten him five years younger.

Amen Brothers, my prayers have been answered! Soooo long Mike Bibby and don’t let the door hit ya from where the Lord split ya!
Hinrich is a team guy and a real point guard with adequate defense.
Hate that we got rid of JC2 but the Hawks don’t develop talent that well anyway!!
Nice big in Hilton Armstrong who can defend and rebound from the center position. Sooo long to Mo Evans who was an okay player.
I’ll take it, nice move Hawks.
