Phoenix–After striking out in their efforts to acquire point guards Devin Harris and Raymond Felton, the Hawks agreed to terms with the Wizards on a trade for veteran Kirk Hinrich and athletic big man Hilton Armstrong, the team announced tonight.
As part of the deal, the Hawks sent Mike Bibby, rookie Jordan Crawford, swingman Mo Evans and their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Wizards.
Bibby, Crawford and Evans were informed of the trade prior to the team’s game against Phoenix tonight. Jeff Teague replaced Bibby in the starting lineup.
Hawks coach Larry Drew declined to comment on the trade before the game because it wasn’t yet official.
The Bulls selected Hinrich, 30, with the seventh overall pick out of Kansas in the 2003 draft. The Bulls traded him to Washington last summer along with Kevin Seraphin.
The Hawks expect Hinrich to shore up their weak perimeter defense, which has put stress on the team defense as players constantly scramble to help against dribble penetration. Like Bibby, Hinrich is a good spot-up shooter but is a better playmaker off the dribble and should help Atlanta’s fast break.
The Hawks also hope Hinrich (6-4, 190), who’s earned a reputation as a hard-nosed player, will provide toughness and leadership. He and Marvin Williams went at it during a game in Chicago last season, with both earning technical fouls.
“I’ve always been a super fan of Kirk,” Williams said. “Watching him at Kansas, he just competes, man. In college, coach [Roy] Williams would always make reference to Kirk Hinrich and say he has that toughness and that attitude.”
Armstrong (6-11, 235 pounds) is limited offensively and doesn’t rebound well for his size. But he’s an athletic leaper who could find a role helping the Hawks protect the rim, which also is a weakness (especially when Josh Smith is not in the game).
“I think in the paint he can block some shots and be able to add that inside presence and help us out down there a little bit,” Smith said.
The trade is another move for the Hawks that could help them now at the expense of future flexibility and development of young players.
Both Armstrong and Evans’ contracts expire after the season. Hinrich is scheduled to make $8 million next season compared to salaries of $6.2 million for Bibby and $1.1 million for Crawford . That would add roughly $700,000 to Atlanta’s estimated $65 million in committed salaries for 2011-12.
The Hawks also had to part with the draft pick and Crawford, whom they acquired in a draft night trade in 2010 after the Nets selected him No. 27 overall. The shooting guard had played sparingly this season, appearing in just 16 of 56 games.
Finally, the trade is the latest indication that the Hawks don’t intend to give Teague a larger role. Teague, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 draft, had played in 46 of 56 games for an average of 11.6 minutes entering the game tonight.
The Hawks acquired Hinrich after a wide search for a trading partner in an urgent attempt to acquire a point guard.
A league source with knowledge of Atlanta’s inquiries said the team tried to swing a trade for Harris before the Nets sent him to Utah in a deal that got them All-Star Deron Williams. The source said the Hawks also were rebuffed when they inquired about point guard Raymond Felton after New York traded him to the Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.
The Hawks also had interest in Cleveland point guard Ramon Sessions, according to the source.

Rev – He played Nash and Dragic (who had 0 pts. i think) much better than I thought he would have. He and Wilkens made LD look really bad tonight for not playing them.

” Wall said he looks forward to working with Bibby.
“He’s a veteran, so I’m hoping he’ll be able to teach me, too,” the rookie said. ”
Good luck with that.
Most of the time, he’ll sit on the bench biting his nails ready to get out of the arena.

Teague was clearly better than Bibby last night and tonight.
And Wilkens has been clearly better than Mo’ for a long time.
And JC2 playing next to Wall is a scary thought. Good move for the Wiz’s also.
But Hinrich will instantly make us a tougher team. He’s a beast emotionally. Like a take Josh by the collar and scream at him kind of beast.’

Although the hawks really had PG issues, the weakest link on this team is LD. He fails to make the proper adjustments on both offense and defense when the need arises.
I definitely agree Woody is much better overall as a coach than LD.

Big Dave,
Thanks for taking time to give me an update. I really appreciate it!
Its striking to me, even though I did not see the game, that the Hawks did not get blown out. In fact, from the box score it looks like the Hawks only got beat in the second quarter. And I saw the last minute of the game so I think I heard that the Suns outscored the Hawks 12-3 in the final minutes of the game. Am I wrong to conclude that replacing Bibby plugged the leak in the defense that lead to the recent blowouts?

Joe hasn’t scored more than 14 points in the last SIX games.
In those six games: 29-74 (.39%) and 4-16 from 3 (.25%)
But here is the killer: In six games, 74 FGA but only 8 FTA!
At two FTA per foul that means Joe, in six games, has shot the ball 74 times and only drawn 4 fouls. FOUR!
I wouldn’t have thought that was even possible in the NBA. Can you say non-aggressive?
Our record in those games? 1-5
We need more from our +$199,000.00 per game “star”.

Hilton Armstong Scouting report from SB Nation:
Assets
* Mobile for a man his size. Has a nice wingspan, solid athleticism, and good coordination for his dimensions.
Flaws
* Doesn’t show good hands for shot-making (either in the post or at the free-throw line). Still needs to add muscle to his frame. Hasn’t played up to his physical gifts early in his NBA career.
Career Potential
* Average depth center.

hard to tell right now.. but i honestly dont think so. i mean, to me.. .we just dont play good team defense. i dont think we have very smart defenders. or maybe its just they dont understand the concepts after being so use to watching, and handing their assignment off in a switch. our so called best defenders get lost or confused, leading to open looks. i think we only have 1 strong overall defender and thats Josh. Joe.. Al.. Jeff… and Marvin are all overrated defensively in the team aspect. pretty solid man defenders. however, help.. rotations. ppfft. just plain ugly. slow.. lethargic.
total opposite of what you see out of a uuuhhhh.. Chicago Bull team.

Bibby was only going to the line .8 times per game in 30 minutes, so kirk does go a little more than Bibby.
But Sessions goes right at 5 times a game in less than 26 mpg. Now that’s a slasher with handles. Maybe he still ends up with the Hawks. We do have the Trade Exception we can use if we gave them Teague or something. Or ZaZa -

no leader.
still no offensive identity that works. still none. we just share the ball more. which is good.
mix in a few post ups, screens to back cut action, pick and rolls and that about sums it up.
coaching staff has yet to realize who’s good at what. or maybe they have and we’re just not very good. i think a combo of both.

It is funny how many people are saying that they have completely given up on the Hawks and won’t invest any more time, emotions or money in this team, yet the blog is almost up to 800 posts in four hours…
What’s really happening is that they are SO emotionally invested in this team and so frustrated by them that they feel compelled to say that they are giving up on the team, but they never will. I know because I am one of these people.

Still got time for a Big..Hinrich is a taller better defending Bibby who can actually pass and will be a better plus if we can add maybe a Robin Lopez or Jason Thompson…I hear the Nets aren’t to friendly with having Brook Lopez, but we gave up to much to the Wiz with that 1st..Teague played like an inexperienced guy with no burn should and hopefully gave LD reason to start and play him more and Damien who played great for a guy who was brought in off 10 day contracts

I’ll say again, though, that I really can’t imagine what the Hawks can deal Zaza for unless they throw in a draft pick to sweeten the pot (which they will have a hard time doing now that they have dealt this year’s pick and cannot by NBA rules deal next year’s pick) or they take back an equally terrible contract (which they probably won’t want to do if the luxury tax is so important to them).

Please trade ZaZa he is ineffective as with Jamal whose selfish. It has come very clear why he was never on a winning team. He is selfish!!! Trade Jamal and ZaZa to Detroit for Prince, Ben Wallace, and McGrady. The numbers work and reduce the Hawks’ salary base next year.

So basically I can’t imagine a realistic scenario in which the Hawks dump Zaza and don’t take back at least an equally bad contract, if not an equally bad player. Jamal is still the only real trade chip this team has.
I still have visions of Ben Wallace getting four offensive rebounds on one possession a week ago against the Hawks dancing around in my head. I don’t care how old he is. I want that guy in a Hawks jersey.

It’s all about the expiring deal. Jamal clears $11 million in salary for any team that trades for him.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4m6ravx
Apparently the Pistons are reluctant to do trades unless they are dollar-for-dollar, due to their in-flux ownership situation, but this trade would save them money this season and next. And if the Hawks use their trade exception to get T-Mac in that deal, they will still be under the luxury tax threshold if I’m not mistaken.
