Atlanta Hawks: Point guard search includes Devin Harris

Los Angeles–It seems Hawks GM Rick Sund has cast a wide net in the team’s search for a bona fide point guard.

In addition to Cleveland’s Ramon Sessions, the Hawks also have inquired about New Jersey’s Devin Harris. Those discussions could pick up now that Harris won’t be going to Denver as part of a deal for ‘Melo, who was traded to the Knicks tonight.

Harris, who turns 27 28 on Sunday, would meet Atlanta’s desire for a capable defender who also can push the pace and create shots for others. But he makes $9.3 million in 2011-12, and adding his salary to the roughly $65 million Atlanta has committed for next season would push Atlanta’s payroll above the current luxury-tax threshold (which could change in the new CBA). Harris also is owed $8.5 million in 2012-13.

It’s not clear whom the Hawks would offer for Harris. Jamal Crawford seems to be the obvious candidate because his expiring $10.1 million contract would allow the Nets to carve out even more cap space for next season–they have just $37 million in committed salaries. Also, the Nets are said to be one of the teams interesting in signing Crawford if he becomes a free agent this summer. But so far there’s been no indication that Sund is looking to move Crawford.

The Hawks also figure to have competition to acquire Harris. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports tweeted tonight: “Dallas, Denver and New Jersey have discussed three-way that would land Harris with Mavs and Felton and Mozgov with Nets, source says.”

However, David Aldridge of TNT and NBA.com later tweeted: “Nuggets will NOT move Gallo/Mozgov to NJ. ‘We got these guys to play for the Nuggets,’ GM Masai Ujiri says.”

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports tweeted: “Portland considering sending G Andre Miller and C Joel Pryzbilla to New Jersey for G Devin Harris and C Troy Murphy, sources tell Y! Sports”

Let’s get harris. Rick Sund, don’t tease us like this!!!! I must say that the Hawks will give up Marvin, Josh, or Jamal to get Harris. They may throw in a player like teague, JC2, bibby, or zaza along with a pick. Someone’s going to be stacked up next year and NJ and Denver futures still look bright.

I know it’s cliche, but in the NBA, no superstars=no championship.

We’ve gotten rid of the excuse that coaching was the limiting factor for this team and now it’s time to face up to some realities that have been apparent for some time, but have been resisted by management and part of the fan base as well.

Clearly the Hawks are going to have to cut into the “core”. I’m not confident Sund is the guy to do the cutting. Then again, we can all just be happy making it (presumably) to the 2nd Round for the next few seasons while the trade value of some players decreases.

If you look at the salaries that the Hawks have coming off their payroll over the next season they realistically would have enough money to give D12 a contract comparable to JJ. I would love a twin towers situation like the Spurs had. I hate to admit it but Horford,D12, Marvin, JJ, Sessions would be better than what we have now. I love Josh Smith but he is not working out with the Hawks because they not utilizing him properly. At least with D12 and Al Horford they would play inside out and kick it out to JJ to shoot. Only thing with this they would have to build their bench with not a lot of salary JC2 could replace JC1 though if groomed properly.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

But that is the type of player that ( if you’re going to move Jamal ) you should be able to get in return. But a team that says that it’s committed to operating under the Luxury Tax, especially when we have no idea how low the salary cap will be set in the next collective bargaining agreement, would NOT make a move like that.

So as of now, I agree with Clyde

“All talk, no action”

How likely is it that the new CBA even has a luxury tax?

From what I see, it’s only budget-conscious teams like the Hawks that care about the luxury tax in the first place. The big-market, big-spending teams the luxury tax is designed to target, like Boston, LA, Dallas, New York, Miami, etc. don’t seem to give two sh-ts about going over the threshold. From what I can see, the tax seems to hurt small market teams more than it helps them. MC, how likely do you think it is that there is no luxury tax in the next CBA?

Seems to me it would be a better idea to have both a soft cap and a hard cap, where teams would be allowed to exceed the soft cap via the current exceptions, but wouldn’t be allowed to exceed the hard cap under any circumstances.

I’d actually prefer Felton over Harris, considering that Felton is a better shooter and defender. I think his strengths fit the Hawks better than Harris’ strengths. And Felton is plenty quick enough himself, even if he doesn’t have Harris’ quickness or ability to get to the line.

That settles it then. Teague is not the future and Bibby is about to be the past. I feel bad for those 2 players, Bibby more than Teague because Teague has not proven himself. Teague is not the point guard of the future for the Hawks. Drafting him was a huge mistake for which we have to atone. Sorry Teague, but you’re just not that good and I am not so into you. Just so you guys know, this is our overall record in March the past 3 years:

30 – 19

This is our March home record:

23 – 5

Some of you can abandon or doubt the team if you want, but those “good teams” have to come to US, not us to them. We got 12 games in March, and maybe 2 of them are so-called “cake walks”. The rest are against good teams. LOL . . then we play the Celtics on April Fool’s day.

If it’s any time to support the Hawks and go see games, it will be in March. That schedule is absolutely outstanding, if you want to see how the Hawks stand up against the good and elite teams.

“Doubting” and “abandoning” are two completely different things.

I hope the fact that these games are at home matters as much this year as it has in past years. The Hawks under Woody dominated at home and were mediocre on the road. The Hawks this year haven’t played any better at home than on the road, and you could even make the argument that they have been worse.

I dont think it’s fair to say “All talk, No Action”. Seeing as tho we have all been on Sund for not even considering making any moves, the fact that he has even “inquired” about getting Harris or even Sessions, shows atleast a bit of progress.

Now given the subject, you all still do realize that getting either PG wont improve us to the status of elite, contenders, or even ECF ready at all. We still have no depth. Doubt the team? Yeah, sometimes. Abandon them? Never. But that’s just my own personal view. I get doubts from losing at home by 41 points to a team that isn’t better than you, and from giving up 23 point leads to teams that aren’t better than you.

I dont think it’s fair to say “All talk, No Action”. Seeing as tho we have all been on Sund for not even considering making any moves, the fact that he has even “inquired” about getting Harris or even Sessions, shows atleast a bit of progress.

Picking up the phone and talking IS just talking, and not acting. If talk is all that happens, then there is no action. And, it’s not at all hard to pick up the phone and talk. I’m sure you’ve done it plenty of times, probably sometimes just for idle chat. Action is when you commit to do something, and find a way to get it done. Even if it’s not right away.

Now given the subject, you all still do realize that getting either PG wont improve us to the status of elite, contenders, or even ECF ready at all. We still have no depth. Unless Sund finds a way to pull a rabbit out of his briefs, I don’t see us as making much noise in the playoffs, until we get depth.

You are absolutely right. But, this is the kind of move that helps you get started in the direction you need to go in. I’ll give you two examples: the Miami Heat, and now the New York Knicks.

The Heat have enough star power to be a major force in the East, but I don’t think they have the literal “guts” to win it all. By guts, I mean depth. But, they built what they wanted/needed to get things going. Now, they have to fill in the pieces in the offseason.

The Knicks pretty much did the same thing. They made moves to acquire talent such as Stoudamire and Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks won’t win anything of particular note this year, but they’ll be as busy (if not busier) than the Heat this offseason, filling in the gaps.

Of course, Atlant has a lot of the talent they need already. We don’t necessarily need a star player, we have two all-stars and one that is an all-star when his head is on straight (which has been a hell of a lot more often these days than in the past). But, we struggle with the two more important positions in the NBA (center and pg), mostly because our C/PF is a bit on the small side and now has taken that very attitude, and our pg is below what we need him to be.

Getting a better pg sets us up much better for the offseason work. Not getting one does NOTHING for us, now or in the offseason, where moves available now will no longer be available.

Oh man, I was excited at the thought of us acquiring Sessions from Cleveland for minimum, but Devin Harris would completely be the best thing to happen to this team in past years. If I’m Jamal, and I’m thinking about one more big contract, I wonder if he’d be against being dealt to Jersey, and having a chance to show off his skills to them?

At this stage in his career, he probably wants to win . . but as we “heard” at the beginning of the season, he wanted that extension bad. Dealing him to Jersey and showing off for the Russian and Jay-Z may be the ideal scenario in which he can get one last sizeable contract.

@ Najeh . . I know “abandon” and “doubt” are two totally different things. Most of the fans doubt the Hawks, while a select few have and will abandon them. The Hawks are going to need the fans in March though. With most of the games being against high quality opponents, it’ll be interesting to see how much support they get.

“No one outside of a Kool-Aid-induced delusion takes this squad seriously.”

No team without a legit superstar is to be taken seriously as a title contender, and the Hawks don’t look like they will have a legit superstar any time soon. Solidifying the point guard position, though, will give the Hawks a legitimate shot at knocking out any of the teams ahead of them in the standings in the playoffs. Right now, the Hawks maybe have what it takes to beat Orlando in 7 games if they have home court. With Harris or Felton, the Hawks definitely have what it takes to hang with any East team other than Boston in a 7 game series. Does it necessarily mean they will beat one of those teams? Maybe not, but it makes the Hawks a lot more legitimate.

From the previous blog;

Steve W,

I’d rather face the Bulls in the first round. We definitely have more experience than Deng, Noah, and Rose in the playoffs..

Keep in mind that Deng, Noah and Rose all made it to the playoffs the last 2 seasons (although they lost in the first round). They also have Boozer and Kyle Korver, who made it to the playoffs numerous times with Utah.

Both LD and the Bulls coach are rookies. However, Thibodeau has been to the NBA finals at least twice, and won a ring as an assistant with the Celtics. And he learned a lot from Doc Rivers, who gave him lots of input.

LD spent the last 6 seasons with Woody, where (allegedly) a lot of his suggestions were not implemented. So who knows what to expect from him in the playoffs?

And even if we have more experience, our players have not bought into LD and his system completely. The Bulls players have bought in to their HC and his systems (especially on defense, where they are top 10), and they have a star PG.

I think it will be tough for us to beat the Bulls if Rose is on his game.

IMO, “Rick Sund making phone calls about Devin Harris” is similar to the “Rick Sund will interview Avery Johnson for the HC job” situation over the offseason.

Did anybody really think Rick and the ASG was serious in possibly hiring Avery Johnson (who in one year, will make what LD makes in 3 years)?

And does anybody really think the Hawks will pick up all that extra salary of Harris next year? I doubt it. If they make a move for a PG, I think it will be Sessions.

With this Devin Harris conversation, I really think Rick is just covering his bases, so if he doesnt make a move before the deadline, he can say to the fans “we made lots of phonecalls, but we couldnt find a deal that gave us bang for our bucks”.

When the Hawks drafted Marvin, they passed up CP3, Deron Williams, and Felton. Right now, we would be better off with anyone of those 3 (imo). Thanks BK.

That being said, CP3 and Deron might be available next offseason, so Sund needs to keep an eye on that situation too

It is time to make the big play. NJ needs Joe and we need cap space. Make the move Sund. The big FA centers are avaliable (Dalenbert – Deandre Jordan). Josh/Al/Big shotblocking – rebounding center make the Hawks strong. Sending Jamal/Zaza to Orlando for Jason Richardson = more cap space. Orlando needs Zaza now.

MC, that was music to my ears…WOW finally some buzz from ole Sund…he never plays his hand…so he got me like Keith Sweat…I’m kind of twisted. lol

If we could get DHarris…it would be a win win for both teams…and both players. The Hawks would be getting a capable PG with playoff experience, size, and skills…did I mention dude had some skills.

It would also work out good for Jamal…CUZ, he would be going to an organization with deeeeeeeep pockets…I think young skillful PG like DH would relish an opportunity to play with Josh and AL…this is the most intriguing trade scenario for me.

I’m just encourage to hear that SUND is actually trying to shore up the PG position before the playoff…this deal could answer a lot of question about this organization.

The Hawks seem to have the right kind of players on their roster to complete a trade for Harris such as Jamal Crawford but the question is will Sund pull the string and of the other teams also interested do they have more or better to offer?

I like the Hawks chances but if I know the Hawks they will go for Sessions because he is cheaper and will probably give up too much to get him?

We could really use Devin Harris’ skills here with us, though.

I may be drinking that koolaid, but the Hawks are a great team if, and ONLY IF, we truly can totally buy into LD’s system. The ONLY game we played GREAT ON BOTH ENDS OF THE FLOOR was against Utah in Utah. If we can play that way against any and all other opponents, we are than ELITE!!

I am not asking for him because he can play D. I am advocating a trade for him because he makes the veterans’ minimum, expires after this season, has steadily gotten better as the season has gone along, and can come in and provide a significant chunk of the scoring punch Jamal currently provides. If the Hawks were to deal Jamal, they obviously would miss his bench scoring. T-Mac would replace that to a huge extent for a minimum salary.

@Tramaine,

Too late to take a chance on Teague at leading the way in the 2nd half of the season. LD should have started Teague from the beginning! The way you develop a rookie PG like Teague (and yes, he is still a rookie since he was totally ignored all last season) is to start him with very limited minutes to get his feet wet with the starters in the beginning of the season. If he causes CRUCIAL TO’s at the wrong time in the game, THEN you pull him, same goes with Josh Smith as well. That way, Teague would be expecting to play, while improving on his game AND gaining confidence at the same time, To test Teague now, would be a big mistake. Too much pressure for him to be successful would take over his mind and cause too many mistakes. I feel sorry the him, though!!

[...] Michael Cunningham, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: It seems Hawks GM Rick Sund has cast a wide net in the team’s search for a bona fide point guard. In addition to Cleveland’s Ramon Sessions, the Hawks also have inquired about New Jersey’s Devin Harris. Those discussions could pick up now that Harris won’t be going to Denver as part of a deal for ‘Melo, who was traded to the Knicks tonight. … It’s not clear whom the Hawks would offer for Harris. Jamal Crawford seems to be the obvious candidate because his expiring $10.1 million contract would allow the Nets to carve out even more cap space for next season — they have just $37 million in committed salaries. Also, the Nets are said to be one of the teams interested in signing Crawford if he becomes a free agent this summer. But so far there’s been no indication that Sund is looking to move Crawford. Najeh,

It’s not like Jamal plays any D either, but we are still paying him $10.8 mil.

Also, T-Mac has more fans than Jamal. Despite being injured last year, he was almost voted into the all-star game (although a lot of those fans were probably Chinese due to the Yao connection). Marketing wise, he would provide a little boost (imo), because a lot of casual fans know T-Mac.

And if he plays well, we could resign him for cheap next year (to share the bench SG role with Jordan).

As for the Knicks, CP3 already said (at Melo’s wedding) that he would like to play there, and he could be available in the next year or 2. There was also a rumor that Deron Williams is interested in the Knicks as well, and he might be available in the next year or 2 as well. And the Knicks dont care about the luxury tax, so they will spend whatever it takes.

I think in 2 years, the Knicks will be competing for a top 4 seed.

Devin or Sessions

I think the only way the Hawks get Harris is if Troy Murpky comes with him….Jamal, Teague,Mo, Zaza/OR BIBBY and 1st gets the Job done.

I DON’T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS, IF WE GET HARRIS AND MURPHY WE ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE EAST AND TITLE CONTENDERS.

Murphy is a 3pt shooting, rebounding 6′11 monster. That would solve our PG and center problem in one move. We would also have the best starting 5 in the East.

Harris, Joe, Josh, AL and Murphy…Wow

Look at the avaiable point guards and you tell me which one fits with Larry and his principles?

1) Andre Miller – ranked in stats way ahead of any of our on the wish list. Miller getting Top 5 accolades, and this is without a 3 pt shot.

http://3behindthearc.blogspot.com/2011/01/2010-11-mid-season-nba-point-guard.html
2) I say Ray Felton is the best fit for Larry. NOTE: Fire sale in Denver. Get ready….
3) Aaron Brooks – I will slot him ahead of Harris because he is not a current starter. He will be available for less than Harris. Plus, we could use his SF, Battier.
3) Devin Harris – Isn’t his defense questionable? I always thought he was weak in steals?
4) Mo Williams – I wouldn’t come close to bringing him in…he has been much worse in Cleveland than any other stop.

Now, rankings from the above link?
Miller @5
Harris @19
Felton @26 – right beside Ty Lawson..Denver won’t keep both
Bibby @33 – surprise!
Brooks @39 – my wish
TJFord @52, MoWilliams@54 and another wish of mine Dragic @60 (neverminde on this one)

Miller’s weakness? 3 pt shooting…his contract is as favorable as Felton….next year @7.8M

Miller or Felton for me with Brooks as a cheap alterative. Sure wish we could have done this this past offseason?

Sund, its time to break your rule of moves during the season…it sure sounds like you didn’t prepare for this situation. Your excuse? Well, Melo is holding up any of my deals I’m doing…blah blah…

I will say since Billups can’t be gotten, Miller might be a good matchup…an older Deron Williams IMO.

Hopefully, there’s some legitimacy to the Hawks interest in Harris. It has been reported for months that NJ was interested going after Jamal in Free Agency. Although, it will probably require a second player to make the trade. Teague or maybe a second round pick, remember NJ already has Farmor( a young pg). Also, maybe add MO and Powell to the deal for Humphries(PF).
With this trade, hopefully, Marvin can becomes the next 6thMOY;he shined in this role in college. Or the Hawks could accept the trade offer from LAC – Gomes(SF – 4mil), C. Smith(PF – 3mil expiring) and 2nd round pick. Smith’s contract gives the Hawks money they would need to cover Harris’ salary increases.
Pryzbilla’s contract(7 mil expiring) is on the block with Portland; he could be a rental for Marvin. Portland needs a small forward and is revamping their team. Marvin is from the area, 24 years old with potential and desparately needs a fresh start. This could be win win for both team; Marvin could find his way and the Hawks get a Center for the playoff run and major cap space next year.

Let the Sund shell game begin! This guy just woke up to stir the pot. He will not land Devin Harris because we want make a serious attempt to get him. If Devin leaves NJ he will be going to Dallas. Sund will not spend the money on Devin and end up in the Luxury Tax, which could get him fired early…see it’s all about job security with Sund.

Sund will finish this contract with the Hawks and take his story to the next interview for GM job. He will use the Hawks party line…We improve our record every year, we kept our core together, which gave us the continuity to remain in the top of the Eastern Conference playoff race. While Hawks management gives their blessing.

Some have said that we are still better than the Knicks, even with the Melo trade…are you serious! Way too much Kool-Aid.

Chauncey Billups @ PG – who on the Hawks will stop him. Granted he 100 years old, but he’s in shape—played in the high altitude of Denver most of his life. He will blow past Bibby and post Teague up…Has the rep of Mr BIG SHOT!

Landry Fields @ SG – the amazing rookie. He will be ROY or runner up to Blake Griffin. He will occupy JJ’s time on offense and is quite capable of playing D on JJ. Plays with a tremendous amount of CONFIDENCE, while HONESTLY, you can’t say the same thing about JJ.

Amare’ has already got Horford shaken a bit. Horford will go hard in the paint on Amare’, but Amare’ is a little more FLUID in his game than Horford, advantage Knicks. (This falls under the category of any given game, but waited toward Amare’)

Melo, the reason for all the fuss, is a TOP 5 PLAYA (Size, Agility, Inside, Outside, Rebound, Get to th Line, Defend a Little) a 5 Time All Star, while Marvin nor Josh can guard this guy; by the way no All Star appearances between them.

Not sure who their center is (Eddie Curry) if healty, but we do not have a center either so it’s a wash, or maybe it’s our one advantage if Horford is in the middle.

Corey Brewer would most likely take up the challenge of guarding Jamal, he would be their best on ball defender. We could possibly gain an edge here but Jamal would have to work for it. Of course, if we make some kind of trade, then Jamal’s not here. Insert Marvin, then advantage goes to Knicks…Brewer would shut him down.

In my opinion the Knicks have just gotten better; Chicago & Miami have already leap frogged us because they improve their rosters; Boston & Orlando were already ahead of us and they upgraded their rosters.

Anyone, who says the Hawks as currently constructed is better than these teams in the Eastern Conference must surly work for the Spirit Group and gets all their tickets, food & drinks for FREE.

Without changes made to the current roster the Hawks are headed for the 6th seed, which in hindsight for the playoffs, might be their best position to finish; which should give them Chicago or Miami. This should make the games a little more interesting to us fans, but the Hawks still exit in the 1st Round.

Jeje, hard to determine if a PG like a Sessions or a Harris would be good for this team. They really don’t do much for their current team as far as wins, and I would just prefer someone who does get you wins in any situation. I think Andre Miller is like that…Aaron Brooks has done that, and yes he had McGrady and Ming….I just feel you have to get a PG that continues to be involved with wins.

Sessions and Harris don’t bring that here….and I know JC1 didn’t bring a winning experience with him, hence why he may no longer be here. JC1 didn’t do anything in the playoffs last year for sure.

To get Felton – The Nuggets want picks, ATL has picks.

1st pick in 2011
1st pick in 2014
Suns 2nd pick this year from the Childress trade
Rockets 2nd pick next year from the Andersen trade
Bibby to back up and tutor Ty. He would thrive under George Karl, just like Chauncey has.
And Mo’ for an expiring

A lot to give up – But to get Dennis Felton, I’d do it.

Then JC2 and even a couple of 2nd picks for Sessions. Throw in Sy and Gladyr if they want more young “talent”. Our Trade Exception allows the above trade to work with salaries.

ASG would go into Luxury tax for the right player(s). The above is about as “right” as it gets in this League. We add about 5m total to next season – 2m in the difference between Bibby and Felton’s salaries, and 3m in the difference in Sessions and JC2 salary.

But we save by not having a 1st pick, and signing DLeaguers for 473,000.00

Then, next – Go sign Da’Sean Butler!!!

And next season, I say get Kwame for the vet minimum, Solomon Jones if you can for the same, re-sign Collins and you’ve ZaZa, you’ve at least got a respectable C position. The C position is so weak in the NBA right now, even Kwame is serviceable right now.

Let’s win a championship Mr. Sund. You’ve been hiding in the bushes. Now’s the time to strike!

Harris could help us show you fans why there is much UPSIDE to this team, but with Mike Bibby who I told you in the hoops world article is in HIS PRIME, we may not need Devin Harris. Teague still has great POTENTIAL. We have to maintain our goal which is to IMPROVE each year.

Jamal and Marvin for Harris and Murphy – salaries work out near perfect. Maybe the Nets sneak us one of their 5 first picks they have over the next 2 seasons.

And maybe we can re-sign Murphy for 2 year vet exception at a couple of Mill per year.

Murphy
Al
Smoove
JJ
Harris

Decent starting 5, with Bibby, Teague, JC2, Mo’, Wilkens, Powell, Etan, Collins, and ZaZa on the bench. Not bad. Maybe Teague finally gets some burn. I doubt it.

Maybe throw Bibby and a 1st pick at the Cavs and see if they take it for Sessions. The salaries would work with the Cavs massive Trade exception.

I’m still trying to figure out a trade where we get Favors. Future All Star right there.

Blockbuster trade! JJ, Josh, Bibby, Zaza, and Marvin for Lopez, Favors, Harris and two # 1 picks! We get center and pg we need and Favors for Josh is close. Have the money to sign Jamaal and Jordan gets more minutes! Front line is solid for years and good draft picks can be used for another scorer or a trade. Objective analysis on the Knicks trade:

Billups is not a up and down the court player. D’Antoni is an up and down the court Coach. Problem #1

Carmelo is the one of the best half court scorers in the game. D’Antoni does not Coach for the half court game. Problem #2

Billups, Carmelo, and Amare are one of the best 3 player combos in the game. Plus 1

Landry Fields is a great role player. He’s what Marvin should be for the Hawks. Plus 2

The Knicks have no bench. Problem #3

Conclusion. The Knicks will be better. Billups will be the catalyst that helps make that happen. How much better? Not better than the Heat, Celtics, or Bulls. Maybe equal with the Magic. Maybe a little better than the Hawks.

Can they catch the Hawks for the 5th seed? Maybe, but it will be close. The Hawks after this road trip have 12 of 15 at home in March. That counts for something.

And the Knicks have been punishing Amare with minutes. How long can he hold out? And if D’Antoni does the same with Carmelo, can he hold out, because he’s a little prone to nagging injuries.

But Billups will be Billups. But can he take the up and down style every night? We’ll see.

SteveW

SteveW, you keep putting out optimism out there for Sund’s goonies to read, and he will start feeling better about what he has given Larry to work with.
You’re right about the Knicks; their schedule will dictate how much ground they make up, because you know we will have a few clunkers in there. Melo will go max minutes to make up for the loss of those side items Amare was working with. Looks like Billups will need Toney Douglas to step up for 10-15 mpg, but I still like their makeup they have put together in a pinch.
They’re big 3 immediately rivals our big 3 plus…they need Fields to keep playing well, Corey Brewer to help in small spots, Douglas to keep it together while big shot Bob is exhaling….I like their chances to get into the 5th slot….and perhaps the 4th should Orlando not come together any better than they have. They need help still.

“Atlanta Hawks: Point guard search includes Devin Harris”

Haven’t I heard this “Sund” before? Wasn’t the Hawks management also playing mind games with the fans pretending to pursue Shaq with no real conviction in signing him? It is appeasement 101. So to those bloggers who insist on giving Sund a pass in his inept in managing this team, I say look no further in his acquisition process and his inability to acquire talent. During his tenure as the Hawks GM, Sund has been responsible for delivering more excuses to the team than quality players. Some would suggest he is just carrying out the wishes of ownership in during nothing. I say “that’s bullsh!t because at the very least he is paid to give his insight and recommendations. But maybe he is doing his job providing this and we are experiencing his results, nothing. I give him little credit for the Crawford deal since that was more of a misstep by Nelly who just didn’t like Crawford’s game and was desperate to move him for anything (IMO). The idea that he is doing a masterful job managing the team’s cap is also a stretch. Really; how hard is it to acquire mediocre players for the vet minimum? He is already on record saying “he likes the core” and “Bibby is a premier PG” (or something similar) Would those Sund huggers say he was seduce by his bosses to say that? Every time he opens his mouth and/or does nothing, he validates the negative perception of him. Devin Harris and Kris Humphries for Jamal Crawford, Zaza and a 1st round pick. This would be a great trade for Hawks, you get Harris and getting rid of Zaza’s contract would cut the unexpected amount added to next years cap from 9.319 million to 4.569 million. You would then spend time this summer figuring how to cut that 4.569 million from your salaries before you go into luxury. It is so realistic if Sund was competent. People gave him too much credit for getting Jamal, that deal worked perfectly, the hard one’s are those that you need some creativity or foresight to make. Sund fails at those. So, he will fail to get Harris also. Harris is a former all-star people. We would have 3 guys that have made all-star appearances within the last 5 years on our team, how many times can the Hawks say that in there history. It is so stupid to not have this done by now.

I really like the Harris idea. However…that doesn’t relieve us of having Marvin “non-factor” Williams as our starting SF. I know I’m beating the same old drum we’ve all beaten & I know you’ll complain about Josh being able to shoot more jumpers if moved to SF, but I still think we sorely need a center. True, there are only a few “bonafide” centers in the league, but just give me a NBA starter-caliber center & I’ll take it. Then give me a coach that’ll bench Josh if he starts another game shooting 3 jumpers in a row! Ugh! Anywho, just my 2 cents…

Exactly. We heard the same thing that they were interested in Avery Johnson, and that they were interested in Shaq. Until we see one of those high impact moves, I think the only moves made will be band-aid moves.

O'Brien

February 22nd, 2011

From espn.com;

To fill out the starting lineup, the Knicks can turn to a big man with championship experience in Ronny Turiaf. Or if it’s shooting they need, Mike D’Antoni can dust off Roger Mason, who shot 44 percent, 43 percent and 39 percent from 3-point range the past three seasons. Or if not Mason, then perhaps Kelenna Azubuike, a career 41 percent shooter.

Anybody who says the Knicks traded away too much is nuts; they clearly upgraded at point guard, and if Gallinari, Mozgov, Wilson Chandler and Raymond Felton were that good, the Knicks would have been better than 28-26 at the break..

Something to be concerned about–In watching the Mirage Game that Ramon Sessions had against the Lakers, it was readily apparent that Sessions has serious trouble holding onto the Ball under extreme Defensive Pressure (this does not bode well for a Point Guard in the Playoffs, when Defensive Pressure is really turned up). If we can’t acquire Devin Harris or Raymond Felton, I really do like Aaron Brooks (he is an Exciting Offensive Dynamo & Hawk Fans will enjoy watching him). As previously suggested by someone on this Blog, sending Jamal Crawford and Marvin Williams for Devin Harris and Troy Murphy works for Both Teams. New Jersey would probably resign Jamal and Marvin will probably flourish on a New Team (he has looked more aggressive of late). Having Murphy (if Healthy) would help our Rebounding (to say the least) and his Expiring Contract removes the major worry of the Luxury Tax. Perhaps we can make Another Deal as well to bolster our Center Position–I’m really not comfortable with Zaza Pachulia coming off the Bench (although Air Zaza might win the next Slam Dunk Competition if they Lower the Basket to 6 Feet and he jumps over a Tire as the Choir sings “I Think I Can Fall”). There are really Serious Trade Opportunities out there and I think this time around Hawk Management realizes it is IMPERATIVE to do Something–afterall their Business depends on it (look at the Excitement and Interest generated by the mere mention of a Trade Possibility).

There’s not going to be any trade made by the Hawks. Sund is blowing smoke in an attemp to cover his hand, but everybody is seeing through it: no cap space, role players with minimal trade value (except Jamal), reluctant to go over the luxury cap, reluctant to break the only thing that bring fans to the game: the core. Hawks management real strategy is to take whatever they can (entrance, revenues, TV) from this season without breaking a sweat, hoping for a long 1st round exit (6-7 game), and wait for the new CBA rules.

Stop wasting your energy proposing trades because Hawk’s deep-run-into-the-playoffs hopes are realistically close to zero. ASG know it, Sund knows it, LD knows it, the players know it, and we (deep down) know it. And the sad thing is, none of the mentioned above can help it.

Duke,

The point is, that if Woodson considered them as part of the core, then Sund acted on that when he re-signed Zaza and Marvin. Perhaps he was giving Woody enough rope, but whatever the reason, Sund TREATED Zaza and Marvin as if they were part of the core when he re-signed them. And that’s what matters here.

Personally I agree that the core SHOULD only be Al, Josh and Joe, (and I’m not so sure about Joe, but good luck getting someone to take THAT contract).

Although I think Al, Josh and JJ should be our core, the problem is except for Jamal and his expiring contract, the other guys (Marvin, Bibby and ZaZa) do not have much trade value.

For those who think the Knicks just passed us, this from espn:

“But will the duo be enough to make the Knicks a contender in the East? One Eastern Conference GM is skeptical. “They have two very good scorers. Billups will help them as well. But after those three, the Knicks are very, very thin, especially up front,” he said. “They won’t match up well with the Celtics, Magic, Bulls or Hawks. The Heat don’t have much of a frontcourt either, but their big three is better than the Knicks’. “I’m not sure this move puts [New York] much higher than a fifth or sixth seed in the East this season or the next. After next season, I don’t think the Knicks have enough cap room or assets to add another major player. I think they’re stuck.”

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have been relying on outstanding team chemistry in their consistent rise through the Eastern Conference ranks since 2006, but with every other team in the East’s power structure making deals since last summer the Hawks may have to abandon this strategy and get in the mix.

One of the glaring holes on the Hawks roster, besides a legitimate center to help Al Horford’s transition to power forward, is point guard. Last week rumors began circulating Atlanta was one of a few teams who reached out to the Cleveland Cavaliers on the availability of point guard Ramon Sessions.

The Hawks are reportedly offering veteran Maurice Evans’ expiring deal and project second year guard Jeff Teague to the Cavs. Sessions is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 assists this season, while registering 21 starts. His presence would bolster Atlanta’s backcourt depth.

(I was the one calling for Shaq this summer and no one listend so this is my 2nd call) We can use these type of guys that we can pay and play into shape and use for the playoffs. Just liek i said this summer if we got Shaq we dont need him all year b/c we could win 50 games with out him we need him for the playoffs and that logic is the same for Yao so i will start this up this summer i need yalls support!! The potential three-team trade that would land Harris back in Dallas is in a bit of trouble. David Aldridge tweeted that Gallo and Mozgov will remain in Denver, but didn’t say anything about Raymond Felton, who was traded along with Gallo and Mozgov for Carmelo Anthony. Both Felton and Mozgov were rumored to head to New Jersey in the three-team deal that would land Harris back in Dallas.

It’s possible that the Nets would take somebody else besides Mozgov in a trade as long as they acquired Felton, or maybe Mozgov makes or breaks their deal. Either way, it looks like Harris will be on the move somewhere in the next few day

After what NeNe just went through with all the Melo-Drama, I doubt if even he signs a Denver extension. Why not choose his next team too? Everyone else is. At his age, does NeNe really want to re-build in Denver? I seriously doubt that. Then again, money does talk loud.

I agree with that and I’ll add “Marvin Williams” to that point also. Nobody wants his contract with all those years left. There is no need for us to keep speculating, if Marvin or Jamal do not play tonight, we will know something is up.

I’m hearing that the sticking point is that the Bucks are now asking for 2 1st round picks and a 2nd.

I hear it’s still possible but it has lost steam. I am scheduled to talk with my source within the next 3 hours he is getting tired of hearing so much and nothing happening I will let you know more when I do.

Once again: It is 50/50 now that the Bucks and Hawks will be exchanging Josh Smith, Jeff Teague, 2 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick for

Kevin M,

I think one of the best trade options for Josh Smith is Nene. Nene makes about $11 mil in the last year of his deal, and he plays center, which would allow Al to move to PF full time.

However, the Nuggets are trying to sign Nene to an extension (and he is their only center), and he loves Denver, so I doubt they will trade him.

Another option for Smoove would have been Chris Kaman. DeAndre Jordan has blossomed, so the Clips are open to trading Kaman. However, Kaman has 2 years left at ~$12 mil per year, and most importantly, he can’t stay healthy, so there is no way the Hawks would trade for him.

I think those 2 guys (in a perfect world) would be a decent trade for Smoove, because it gives us a decent starting center.

Atlanta Hawks. A two-way performer like Kirk Hinrich would toughen their backcourt at the defensive end. But offering Marvin Williams or Mike Bibby isn’t likely to get it done for the Hawks, who need to make a move in order to create hope for reaching the conference finals.

I read from Rumors on hoopshype that the Cavs have pulled back on trading Sessions due to a re-aggravated hip injury to Maurice Williams.

So if the Sund talks with the Cavs are broken down then it makes sense to
leak the Devin Harris rumor, however Devin is very doable for the Hawks if Dallas backs off. Sund should also be calling Denver to see what thsy will take for Felton and Do It!

For the record, My cousin BooBoo had the correct infromation concerning the trade. It was the Hawks who rejected Phoenix’s offer: Jamal, Teague, and 1 million cash for Nash. So much for the 3 mil, they received for the second round pick. I suspect they used it to pay the light bill.

This sure sounds like an all-out attempt for the ASG to save face with the fans. No deal, you will not increase your gate receipts.
OB, I would not want any part of Kaman, who looks like a one year all-star wonder. You can’t give up good goods for damaged goods.
And Bogut might be in the same scenario. The Bucks need a shakeup, but unless you get Jennings, you aren’t talking.

My list of names to bring in here:

Brooks, Battier
Felton, Nene
Miller, Pryzbilla/Camby
Cousins, Evans (wishful thinking here)
Arthur (Memphis in a side deal)…bulk for the paint

Why does Dallas want Harris? They already have 3 PGs….sheesh…at least let us get one?

Meanwhile . . . there’s a game going on tonight. Should be an interesting game, with both teams coming off of a tough week/10 days before the All-Star break.

Hopefully Jamal gets back on track and has a nice game. If this is one of his final games in a Hawks uniform, I’d rather for him to go out with a bang, than to keep struggling. With the Lakers off track a little bit, this is definiely the right time to beat them in LA for the first time since Jason Terry’s great game there in 2002. ( At least I believe it was JT that had the big gme ).

*****

As for all this trade talk, I think I’ve only seen one other person even mention this . . and it’s using the TPE ( that we got from the Josh Childress to Phoenix trade ) to acquire a player.

For all of the talk about “blockbuster trades”, the track record of Sund and the ASG suggest that they’ll use the TPE to acquire a player, and do nothing else.

Capologists, correct me if I’m wrong on this, but I believe a player acquired via the TPE does NOT count against that team’s cap number for one year.

Our TPE is around 3 mill . . so we trade for a player making 3 mill . . and his salary isn’t counted against us as far as going over the luxury tax goes.

So there it is . . . the most likely move the Hawks will make, is to use the TPE on a 3 million dollar player . . then we’ll have to cut someone like Etan or Sy, to make room.

So . . who is a 3 mill per year player that people want here, and another team doesn’t want?

Okay, I don’t have the NBA package, so a lot of these guys I haven’t seen. I saw Aaron Brook tear the Hawks up, but looking at his stats, he has not played very well. Looking at Sessions, he had a career night against LA, and since he has been a starter, he has given the Cav’s some real good numbers. Prior to starting, he was average at best. My point is play Teague see what we have and trade for a big. Why trade a point guard if he is already on the team?

How to F up your cap then blame the Fans and try to put pressure on your players staring Rick “DumbSundofaGM”

Step 1: Pay Zaza I got in KG’s face Pachulia $4 million a year to get dominated by any and every player that is in front of him.

Step 2: Pay a former D League player $4 million a year after trading away your 1st round draft pick at PG who many said could be the best PG of his class in 3 years. You trade him after a year and a half.

Devin Harris makes $9 million next year. Put Zaza and Session’s salaries together and you get about $8.75 mill next year. Now go try and trade Sessions and Zaza for Harris. You will get laughed at, but I guess this guy needs more proof that he is incompetent. There is a reason Sund does not make moves, because no one wants his dumb arse contracts. One stupid MF’er

Denver is having a fire sale, the Hawks should be after Nene, a true center. Send Marvin and Crawford, that is elementary. The Hawks are not winning it this year but can start building for the future because the Knicks have stepped up, Chicago may well win the East, and we know about Miami. Boston is on their last leg this year and Orlando will never win with Van Gundy, so there are openings in the top 4 next year.

PF Josh Smith ($11M), SF Marvin Williams ($7M) and PG Mike Bibby ($5M) to Denver for C Nene Hilario ($11M), PG Raymond Felton ($7M) and PF Al Harrington ($5M). The combined salaries are nearly exact.

We could leave Harrington and Bibby out of it…but Harrington, imo, would be a far better 2nd team scorer than Bibby—yes he has 5 years on his contract, which is a lot—but Bibby has 3.

Hawks’ 1st Team:

1-Felton
2-Ja.Crawford
3-Johnson
4-Horford
5-Nene

Haws’ 2nd Team:

Somebody please wake me up when Atlanta gets a real NBA team. The Hawks organization is probably the worst joke anyone could play on the residents of this great city. I’m sorry to be so harsh, but quite frankly, owners like A. Blank has set the sports standards here and the Hawks/Thrashers are not cutting it. I need the Spirit group to smarten up and stop paying so much money for mid-level players. There’s not 3 players combined on this team that should make $120 million. Let’s be clear. We lack ‘Star-POWER’ and game changers. Everybody wants to know why Jamal Crawford is in a slump…it’s called I want out because you all won’t resign me. $10M for a player coming off the bench. Get REAL! Jeff Teague and (R) Jamal Crawford has not been given a fair shake. You can’t possibly get better playing 6 minutes a night. Let those guys play since the veterans are not hacking it. NBA Championship this year…with all the POWER in Boston, Miami, Orlanda, & New York…child please (in my Ocho Cinco voice)! We goofed on Marvin Williams, Sheldon Williams, A.C. Law, Jeff Teague, and all the other international players that we drafted for nothing. Maybe the issue is not coaching…rather the SCOUTING department.
