Atlanta Hawks: Point guard search includes Devin Harris

Los Angeles–It seems Hawks GM Rick Sund has cast a wide net in the team’s search for a bona fide point guard.

In addition to Cleveland’s Ramon Sessions, the Hawks also have inquired about New Jersey’s Devin Harris. Those discussions could pick up now that Harris won’t be going to Denver as part of a deal for ‘Melo, who was traded to the Knicks tonight.

Harris, who turns 27 28 on Sunday, would meet Atlanta’s desire for a capable defender who also can push the pace and create shots for others. But he makes $9.3 million in 2011-12, and adding his salary to the roughly $65 million Atlanta has committed for next season would push Atlanta’s payroll above the current luxury-tax threshold (which could change in the new CBA). Harris also is owed $8.5 million in 2012-13.

It’s not clear whom the Hawks would offer for Harris. Jamal Crawford seems to be the obvious candidate because his expiring $10.1 million contract would allow the Nets to carve out even more cap space for next season–they have just $37 million in committed salaries. Also, the Nets are said to be one of the teams interesting in signing Crawford if he becomes a free agent this summer. But so far there’s been no indication that Sund is looking to move Crawford.

The Hawks also figure to have competition to acquire Harris. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports tweeted tonight: “Dallas, Denver and New Jersey have discussed three-way that would land Harris with Mavs and Felton and Mozgov with Nets, source says.”

However, David Aldridge of TNT and NBA.com later tweeted: “Nuggets will NOT move Gallo/Mozgov to NJ. ‘We got these guys to play for the Nuggets,’ GM Masai Ujiri says.”

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports tweeted: “Portland considering sending G Andre Miller and C Joel Pryzbilla to New Jersey for G Devin Harris and C Troy Murphy, sources tell Y! Sports”

How about Teague, Bibby, Mo and Zaza for Kobe, Gasol, Bynum and Lamar Odom? We could throw in a 2nd round draft choice too.

This would be more realistic than some of the trade proposals on here.

This is the last year of Sund’s contract. I think he knows if he doesn’t make a move, he’s gone.

Let’s hope so anyway.

I don’t know. That 2nd rounder is a deal breaker.

Horford said “Ain’t nobody afraid of Amare”, we’re all grown men”.

Yep, sounds just like Al is shaking in his boots.

Al didn’t buy into the hype, but apparently wink did, lol.

“When he could’ve stayed “unemployed” but picked up checks from Dallas?”

Because, Avery had already received that last annual payment or check.
Yeah, it was time for ole’ Avery to replenish them old bare cupboards.

Baby needed new shoes. Anyway, good point in what is it about Devin Harris’ game, that Avery doesn’t like. Why is Avery so willing to let this guy go? Is it poor defense or physical durability?

What would it take to get Felton for Marvin in here?

There’s not going to be any trade made by the Hawks. Sund is blowing smoke in an attemp to cover his hand, but everybody is seeing through it: no cap space, role players with minimal trade value (except Jamal), reluctant to go over the luxury cap, reluctant to break the only thing that bring fans to the game: the core. Hawks management real strategy is to take whatever they can (entrance, revenues, TV) from this season without breaking a sweat, hoping for a long 1st round exit (6-7 game), and wait for the new CBA rules.

Stop wasting your energy proposing trades because Hawk’s deep-run-into-the-playoffs hopes are realistically close to zero. ASG know it, Sund knows it, LD knows it, the players know it, and we (deep down) know it. And the sad thing is, none of the mentioned above can help it.

Breaking News…..
From what I hear from a person inside the Piston’s organization, look for a trade soon (this evening) between the Hawks, Pistons, and New Jersey involving Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia, and draft picks. Based on what he said, we are getting a pg and a big. I will keep you guys posted if I can get the names of the potential players coming to Atlanta. I almost didn’t believe it when I heard it. Apparently, this is real.

I will be floored if this organization makes a move. But i do see them winning in LA just so Sund can believe in his “CORE” and not realize that something still needs to be done.

I wont put anything past this group. They will go out and play well enough for Sund to not bother and then revert to their old ways soon thereafter.

vava,

The problem is NJ just signed Bo Outlaw to a 5 year $35 mil deal, so I doubt if they would want Marvin.

drmaryb,

I think the Nuggets might be open to giving the Hawks Felton IF the Hawks will take back Al Harrington (who signed this past offseason to a 5 year $33 mil deal).

#1 Hawks Fan, are you being serious? Make sure this is legit. I really, really, really want the Hawks to make a move. And, the one you are hinting at sounds like a move I would like. It gets rid of Zaza (who has been awful this year) and gets us a big and PG. I would be sad to see Jamal go, though.

Anyways….my emotions cannot be toyed with right now. Please, tell me you are being serious.

everybody gets picks

Robin Lopez pretty much has been replaced with Gortat.
Devin Harris is lightening quick, and penetrates like we want our PG to do
T Mac can help replace Jamal along with Bibby
Jerebko is just another big we can use, who can actually defend& rebound(upgrades Zaza)

Duke,

The point is, that if Woodson considered them as part of the core, then Sund acted on that when he re-signed Zaza and Marvin. Perhaps he was giving Woody enough rope, but whatever the reason, Sund TREATED Zaza and Marvin as if they were part of the core when he re-signed them. And that’s what matters here.

Personally I agree that the core SHOULD only be Al, Josh and Joe, (and I’m not so sure about Joe, but good luck getting someone to take THAT contract).

Although I think Al, Josh and JJ should be our core, the problem is except for Jamal and his expiring contract, the other guys (Marvin, Bibby and ZaZa) do not have much trade value.

So Hawks may be forced to give up Josh to really shake things up.

For those who think the Knicks just passed us, this from espn:

“But will the duo be enough to make the Knicks a contender in the East? One Eastern Conference GM is skeptical. “They have two very good scorers. Billups will help them as well. But after those three, the Knicks are very, very thin, especially up front,” he said. “They won’t match up well with the Celtics, Magic, Bulls or Hawks. The Heat don’t have much of a frontcourt either, but their big three is better than the Knicks’. “I’m not sure this move puts [New York] much higher than a fifth or sixth seed in the East this season or the next. After next season, I don’t think the Knicks have enough cap room or assets to add another major player. I think they’re stuck.”

I would guess Tayshaun instead of T-Mac and Will Bynum instead of Stuckey. I could see Ben Wallace as the “big” though. Wallace is expendable with Monroe and Maxiell in the front court. Detroit has a lot of good pieces we could use. Thats why I am so inclined to see them as a trade partner.
