Los Angeles–It seems Hawks GM Rick Sund has cast a wide net in the team’s search for a bona fide point guard.
In addition to Cleveland’s Ramon Sessions, the Hawks also have inquired about New Jersey’s Devin Harris. Those discussions could pick up now that Harris won’t be going to Denver as part of a deal for ‘Melo, who was traded to the Knicks tonight.
Harris, who turns 27 28 on Sunday, would meet Atlanta’s desire for a capable defender who also can push the pace and create shots for others. But he makes $9.3 million in 2011-12, and adding his salary to the roughly $65 million Atlanta has committed for next season would push Atlanta’s payroll above the current luxury-tax threshold (which could change in the new CBA). Harris also is owed $8.5 million in 2012-13.
It’s not clear whom the Hawks would offer for Harris. Jamal Crawford seems to be the obvious candidate because his expiring $10.1 million contract would allow the Nets to carve out even more cap space for next season–they have just $37 million in committed salaries. Also, the Nets are said to be one of the teams interesting in signing Crawford if he becomes a free agent this summer. But so far there’s been no indication that Sund is looking to move Crawford.
The Hawks also figure to have competition to acquire Harris. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports tweeted tonight: “Dallas, Denver and New Jersey have discussed three-way that would land Harris with Mavs and Felton and Mozgov with Nets, source says.”
However, David Aldridge of TNT and NBA.com later tweeted: “Nuggets will NOT move Gallo/Mozgov to NJ. ‘We got these guys to play for the Nuggets,’ GM Masai Ujiri says.”
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports tweeted: “Portland considering sending G Andre Miller and C Joel Pryzbilla to New Jersey for G Devin Harris and C Troy Murphy, sources tell Y! Sports”

If I’m Jamal, and I’m thinking about one more big contract, I wonder if he’d be against being dealt to Jersey, and having a chance to show off his skills to them?
At this stage in his career, he probably wants to win . . but as we “heard” at the beginning of the season, he wanted that extension bad. Dealing him to Jersey and showing off for the Russian and Jay-Z may be the ideal scenario in which he can get one last sizeable contract.
@ Najeh . . I know “abandon” and “doubt” are two totally different things. Most of the fans doubt the Hawks, while a select few have and will abandon them. The Hawks are going to need the fans in March though. With most of the games being against high quality opponents, it’ll be interesting to see how much support they get.
LOL @ that Law and Order episode. That’s symbolism right there.

The Hawks ain’t going nowhere. Devin Harris would be a nice piece to add, but this team still ain’t going anywhere. We waited through the Dark Ages of post-Mookie/Deke/Smitty for this. We’re relevant in that we’re a middle-of-the-pack playoff team that shows flashes from time to time. No one outside of a Kool-Aid-induced delusion takes this squad seriously.

Harris/T-Mac/Ben Wallace here… Prince/Teague to New Jersey… Jamal/Mo/some filler from NJ to make the deal work to Detroit
Alternately, Felton/T-Mac/Ben Wallace here… Prince and a Hawks first rounder to Denver… Jamal/Powell/Teague to Detroit
If nothing else, this rumor does confirm that the Hawks are willing to at least discuss deals that would put them over the luxury tax for next year. That is a big deal.

No team without a legit superstar is to be taken seriously as a title contender, and the Hawks don’t look like they will have a legit superstar any time soon. Solidifying the point guard position, though, will give the Hawks a legitimate shot at knocking out any of the teams ahead of them in the standings in the playoffs. Right now, the Hawks maybe have what it takes to beat Orlando in 7 games if they have home court. With Harris or Felton, the Hawks definitely have what it takes to hang with any East team other than Boston in a 7 game series. Does it necessarily mean they will beat one of those teams? Maybe not, but it makes the Hawks a lot more legitimate.

WOW, Devin Harris to the Hawks would look nice but I believe Teague and Jamal would most likely be out..dont know if I truly want Teague to go..hate to see him turn into a mini-Tony Parker!! Teague is no Acie Law, no matter how many times Teague drive and misses a lay-up, HE NEVER GIVES UP DRIVING TO THE LANE, like Acie would. Teague can AND WILL get it ALL together, weither we are patient enough to work with him til he is all there or we give up on him and let another team do what we just cant seem to do and watch the ‘rook’ turn into an ‘ALL-STAR’..u heard it/ read it 1st right here!!

Aaron Brooks is also another player the Hawks are looking at, he’s just as good as Harris and a lot cheaper(5.3 assist 19.6 points last season). It would be a miracle if they got Harris without given up too much, Harris for Crawford would be a wash.

From the previous blog;
Steve W,
I’d rather face the Bulls in the first round. We definitely have more experience than Deng, Noah, and Rose in the playoffs..
Keep in mind that Deng, Noah and Rose all made it to the playoffs the last 2 seasons (although they lost in the first round). They also have Boozer and Kyle Korver, who made it to the playoffs numerous times with Utah.
Both LD and the Bulls coach are rookies. However, Thibodeau has been to the NBA finals at least twice, and won a ring as an assistant with the Celtics. And he learned a lot from Doc Rivers, who gave him lots of input.
LD spent the last 6 seasons with Woody, where (allegedly) a lot of his suggestions were not implemented. So who knows what to expect from him in the playoffs?
And even if we have more experience, our players have not bought into LD and his system completely. The Bulls players have bought in to their HC and his systems (especially on defense, where they are top 10), and they have a star PG.
I think it will be tough for us to beat the Bulls if Rose is on his game.

If they’re willing to take Crawford for Harris, I would do that right now! I like Jamal a lot, but adding Harris to the Hawks makes the Hawks a serious threat in the East.
If Sund gets this deal done, he’s made a new fan. I will be in his corner from here on out.

IMO, “Rick Sund making phone calls about Devin Harris” is similar to the “Rick Sund will interview Avery Johnson for the HC job” situation over the offseason.
Did anybody really think Rick and the ASG was serious in possibly hiring Avery Johnson (who in one year, will make what LD makes in 3 years)?
And does anybody really think the Hawks will pick up all that extra salary of Harris next year? I doubt it. If they make a move for a PG, I think it will be Sessions.
With this Devin Harris conversation, I really think Rick is just covering his bases, so if he doesnt make a move before the deadline, he can say to the fans “we made lots of phonecalls, but we couldnt find a deal that gave us bang for our bucks”.

I’ve been crying for D. Harris or Mo Williams but we can’t give up Ja Crawford or J. Smith. give up Teague or Bibby & 1st rnd pick(2011). We would still need to make another move after that to be a true contender in the east. M.Williams, Mo Evans & 1st rnd pick (2012) for Nene&J.R. Smith or Gortat and Petritus(they would love to punish Orlando for trading them to the suns)
C-Nene or Gortat
PF- Horford
SF-Smith
SG-Johnson
PG-Harris or Mo. Williams
Bench-Ja. Crawford, J.R. Smith or Petritus, Zaza, Bibby or Teague

When the Hawks drafted Marvin, they passed up CP3, Deron Williams, and Felton. Right now, we would be better off with anyone of those 3 (imo). Thanks BK.
That being said, CP3 and Deron might be available next offseason, so Sund needs to keep an eye on that situation too

It is time to make the big play. NJ needs Joe and we need cap space. Make the move Sund. The big FA centers are avaliable (Dalenbert – Deandre Jordan). Josh/Al/Big shotblocking – rebounding center make the Hawks strong. Sending Jamal/Zaza to Orlando for Jason Richardson = more cap space. Orlando needs Zaza now.

MC, that was music to my ears…WOW finally some buzz from ole Sund…he never plays his hand…so he got me like Keith Sweat…I’m kind of twisted. lol
If we could get DHarris…it would be a win win for both teams…and both players. The Hawks would be getting a capable PG with playoff experience, size, and skills…did I mention dude had some skills.
It would also work out good for Jamal…CUZ, he would be going to an organization with deeeeeeeep pockets…I think young skillful PG like DH would relish an opportunity to play with Josh and AL…this is the most intriguing trade scenario for me.
I’m just encourage to hear that SUND is actually trying to shore up the PG position before the playoff…this deal could answer a lot of question about this organization.

The Hawks seem to have the right kind of players on their roster to complete a trade for Harris such as Jamal Crawford but the question is will Sund pull the string and of the other teams also interested do they have more or better to offer?
I like the Hawks chances but if I know the Hawks they will go for Sessions because he is cheaper and will probably give up too much to get him?

Is it me or do anyone else feels that we are STILL betta than NY? I mean, they gave up Galinari, Chandler,AND Felton for Melo?? Melo couldnt even get his own team many wins with Billups, Nene, JR Smith and company…who is the Knicks bench???? I’m still not scared of NY..really not anyone. We could really use Devin Harris’ skills here with us, though.
I may be drinking that koolaid, but the Hawks are a great team if, and ONLY IF, we truly can totally buy into LD’s system. The ONLY game we played GREAT ON BOTH ENDS OF THE FLOOR was against Utah in Utah. If we can play that way against any and all other opponents, we are than ELITE!!

I am not asking for him because he can play D. I am advocating a trade for him because he makes the veterans’ minimum, expires after this season, has steadily gotten better as the season has gone along, and can come in and provide a significant chunk of the scoring punch Jamal currently provides. If the Hawks were to deal Jamal, they obviously would miss his bench scoring. T-Mac would replace that to a huge extent for a minimum salary.

@Tramaine,
Too late to take a chance on Teague at leading the way in the 2nd half of the season. LD should have started Teague from the beginning! The way you develop a rookie PG like Teague (and yes, he is still a rookie since he was totally ignored all last season) is to start him with very limited minutes to get his feet wet with the starters in the beginning of the season. If he causes CRUCIAL TO’s at the wrong time in the game, THEN you pull him, same goes with Josh Smith as well. That way, Teague would be expecting to play, while improving on his game AND gaining confidence at the same time, To test Teague now, would be a big mistake. Too much pressure for him to be successful would take over his mind and cause too many mistakes. I feel sorry the him, though!!

Make this happen sund. They want to give up outlaw anyway because he has underperformed relative to expectations. Marvin and Jamal for Harris and Outlaw. Outlaw woul be a solid backup SF.
