Horford in lineup for Saturday night

After missing two games with a back injury, Hawks center Al Horford will play Saturday night against the Charlotte Bobcats at Philips Arena. Horford took part in the team’s morning shootaround and pronounced himself ready to go.

“I went out there and tested it out and I feel good for tonight,” he said.

Horford injured his lower back when he fell hard after getting fouled by the Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and landed on his back in the Hawks’ Feb. 4 win at Philips.

“Just his presence means all the world to us,” coach Larry Drew said.

Horford missed the team’s win over Washington last Saturday and its 34-point loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Horford sat out of Thursday’s practice and then took in part in non-contact portions of the team’s practice Friday.

“It’s been a little better each day, and today’s the best I’ve felt since it happened,” said Horford, recently named to his second All-Star team.

Horford will start at forward as the Hawks will go with their “big” lineup with Jason Collins at center. Drew said that lineup was not the lineup change he had mentioned in the wake of the team’s lethargic loss to Philadelphia.

Prior to Saturday, Drew had said that any changes would have to wait until Horford returned, adding that he may “possibly” still tweak the lineup.

“Had he not gotten hurt, I still would have played it this way,” Drew said.

If LD does not keep his word, he will lose credibility.

They must make a trade if the organization aspires to win a championship.
If not…..say so.

I’m still angry!

Bibby and Marvin need to come off the bench, and we need to start Jeff Teague. Teague, Joe, Josh, Al and Collins should start permanetly.

Great to see Al back in the lineup. He may not be the Hawks best player, but I think he is their most important player.

Grandad,

One of 3 things need to happen. 1) Make a change to the normal lineup of Bibby, JJ, Marvin, Al and Josh 2) there must be a noticeable difference in how he distributes his minutes or 3) Make a Trade

If one of those 3 things dont happen, then LD will be perceived as always saying the right things (which he has done since his introductory press conference), but not following through when it counts.

This will also bolster our bench with Bibby, Jamal, Marvin, and Zaza coming off of it.

How pathetic are the Hawks fans? They have a good record and we live in a city of over 5 million yet they have what, three sellouts this year? Meanwhile, the pathetic Cavs in a small city sellout almost every game, including over 20,000 last night. What does that tell you? The Hawks need to leave. This is NOT a basketball town. Nobody wants to watch millionaire thugs play basketball. We see plenty of thugs on a daily basis in this city.

jordan crawford will turn into jamal (just as streaky) in a year or two. thorton can give us what marvin did (rebounds and defense) plus a little more scoring of the bench. plus we would be adding the size and upside of Javale Mcgee.

Aaron – your argument lost a little steam there. first you’re calling out atlanta for not supporting the hawks, but then you call them thugs and that no one wants to watch thugs play basketball.
here’s a question – if the hawks go into the break playing better and continue after, will you still hold drew to the changes he was leaning towards?
he said he wanted to do it to shake things up. if the team plays better, then, you could argue there doesn’t need to be a shakeup.
i’m not sure how i fall on this, but i do think that if the team picks up its play, it’d be kind of counterproductive to then make a change.

Ken, then why is it that the Braves play 81 home games a year and average 30,000 a game yet the Hawks play only 41 home games a year and the “actual” attendance is only about 13,000 a game? The Hawks were popular back in the Wilkins and Webb days, not now.

Ken, that;s why you make the change TONIGHT. They havent been playing well. Losing by 30+ to Philly, and not playing with effort on your own home court should justify the change imo. What difference does it make if Bibby comes off the bench or starts? He’s still old and slow and a complete liability on defense. That wont change either way. I actually think bringing him off the bench as a sniper would serve him well.

Hawks fans are INTELLIGENT. Why do I say this? Because they stay home and refuse to pay a bunch of money to watch a team play 41 times, knowing full well what’s to come in the playoffs. This team can’t get out of the second round. Not a chance, no way, ain’t gonna happen, so why waste your time at Phillips? It’s sad to say this, but it’s just the way it is. Besides, this is the same crew that just got blown out by 30 something by philly. They don’t play hard.

I urge ALL intelligent fans to continue staying at home until marvin williams is dumped, and Josh Smith too. Williams because he flat can’t play and smith because he loafs on defense. Can’t STAND to see that. As for Horford, he is indeed a credit to this team and city. A fine player and person seemingly and one who HUSTLES.

Move Joe and we have a chance. Send him anywhere. The ownership has no confidence in the players. That why there is no team commitment. Joe is valuable to NJ. The Nets need a franchise face. The Hawk fans want a championship. Free-up the cash, trade Joe for Favors/Murphy. Orlando needs size, send Jamal/Zaza for Jason Richardson. With the CAP space savings be a real-playor in free agency. Overpay Deandre Jordan resign J. Rich. to medium contract. J. Rich/D. Jordan/Favors the defence/rebounds improve, hence elite team.

Ken S.

thanks for the new blog and update. nice article and insights, im glad Horford feels better, i was really worried there for a minute. my specialty is spinal health (chiropractic) with a focus on extremities (arms and legs). Al said, when he fell he couldn’t get up because his legs felt very weak.

that scared me because, i was thinking spinal cord injury. i am sure he had some swelling on the lower spinal cord, which a ton of ice is the best immediate and long term treatment for. imagine something as simple as icing the spine could be so monumental for something so serious as a spinal injury. they may have injected some cortisone or steroids in there as well to control the swelling inside the spinal canal. but, ice would be the most helpful, imagine that!

Get Well Boss! We LOVE you!

i would be very careful with Al’s minutes tonight though. no more than 25 minutes perhaps.

Yes, the Hawks have a good record, but they are an underachieveing team. You here the same excuses from this bunch everynight! They don’t play hard. A trade needs to be made. They need someone like a Chancey Billups. A leader! JJ is not a leade. He is a good player but not elite. Horford is the only leader we have and he is playing out of position. We have overpaid for some of these guys (MW and JJ). The fans aren’t interested because they know how this story will unfold.

Aaron,

Perception is NOT reality.

You said this: “The Hawks were popular back in the Wilkins and Webb days, not now.”

Actually, the best the Hawks drew during the Wilkins / Webb heyday was 88-89 when they averaged 15, 714. The last three years have averaged more than that.

Yeah, there are probably more corporate seats sold and unused today, but that goes for every team and not just the Hawks. Tax write offs are easier to come by with today’s lax tax laws.

But if you think that the Hawks are thugs, then why even come to this site?

Grandad and O’Brien,

I want to remind you both that LD never PROMISED to change the lineup. He only said that he was considering it. And he didn’t say WHEN. So I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt as to HIM knowing IF and WHEN to make lineup changes.

I keep seeing over and over that if he doesn’t change the lineup TONIGHT, then he is going back on his word. That’s simply not the case.

If you’d like, go back and see for yourself: http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2011/02/09/atlanta-hawks-larry-drew-says-lineup-change-trades-may-be-needed-to-disrupt-teams-comfort-zone/?cxntfid=blogs_hawks

You’ll see no promises there.

“if the hawks go into the break playing better and continue after, will you still hold drew to the changes he was leaning towards?”

Yes, because the Sixers game was not an isolated incident. They have had too many games this season where they either lost big or let an inferior team hang around all game thanks to a lethargic effort. Maybe the Hawks can play better for a few games, but eventually they will have more games like the last one, and these games will inevitably pop up in the playoffs when everyone else ramps up their level of play.

If a lineup change will solve that problem, LD owes it to the team to experiment with it not only before the playoffs, but also before the brutal stretch of games the Hawks are about to see after the All Star break. In particular, if replacing Bibby with Teague is the move, LD owes it to the team to let Teague have a couple of starts against the DJ Augustins of the league as opposed to throwing him into the fire against Derrick Rose or Russell Westbrook.

Jake,

Read my post again. I’m certainly all for a lineup change. I just didn’t see any promise that it would come tonight.

And everything he said led me to believe that he was putting a lot of thought into it. With that in mind, personally, I’ll allow HIM to choose when and if to change the lineup. If it’s not tonight, then perhaps he has his own reasons. And don’t discount the idea that just talking about changing the lineup and talking about trades could, of itself, be enough of a motivator to light the fire he wants to see in this team.

As long as Bibby continues to start then nothing LD says holds any weight. For all the flack that Josh and Marvin catch on this blog its clearly Bibby who has been the weak link in the starting lineup. I guess as long as he hits a few three’s every once in a while then all is well.
