Greetings, all
Ken here for the last time in awhile as MC braces for the mother of all road trips.
1) You may find this interesting. On my way in to the arena, I was thinking to myself, If I were ever to feel good about wagering on a game (not that I wager), this would be it. Hawks have spent three days stewing over an embarrassing loss, playing at home where they’ve beaten Charlotte seven in a row, Al Horford back, Charlotte coming off a back to back, etc.
However, I confess I was not aware of what happened in Charlotte last night. The Bobcats lost at home to New Jersey, which had come into the game having lost 12 in a row on the road. Not only that, but Charlotte never led the whole game.
Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace excoriated their teammates for their lack of effort. Read these gems, excerpted from the Charlotte Observer game story (written by the very capable Rick Bonnell, who is sitting behind me in the media room):
“To not even show up at all is embarrassing,” said Jackson (21 points). “It’s sad that a coach has to ask guys to play hard…to care.”
“We acted like the other team was just going to fall down. There are only two or three teams in the league (good enough) that they can be like that. We’re not one of them.”
Or as Wallace (20 points and nine rebounds) added, “We just gave away a game in Indiana (Wednesday). We can’t keep doing that.
“We haven’t lost two (straight) games; we gave them away with our (lack of) effort. A coach should never have to ask for that.”
So, rather than being a gut-check game for one team, it’s a gut-check game for both. I still give the edge to the Hawks by basis of rest, being at home and the fact that they’re better, but this could be a bit more of a fight than you normally see in February.
2) This sort of feeds into 1), and is kind of amusing. I was in the locker room prior to the game, and it came to light that Wallace, from tiny Childersburg, Ala., bought 80 tickets for the game. Apparently even the mayor is coming. So Marvin Williams kiddingly wished Josh Smith good luck in defending a presumably extra-motivated Wallace. (Childersburg’s website claims it’s the “oldest city in America.” Not sure how that’s possible, but, hey, who am I to argue?
3) Nothing else new to report, really. Horford’s still going.
Enjoy the game.

Too bad the ‘cats come in here hungry. I’d much rather that they had won big last night.

I would never bet on the Hawks with two or more days of rest this year. They are 5-8 this year with two or more days of rest, in contrast with their 11-4 record on the back end of back to backs.

From the previous blog…
“I just hope that some of these same people don’t act like they were down for the Hawks from Day 1, if we do the improbable, and get to the ECF.”
The majority of fans of any team do exactly that. They jump on the bandwagon when the team is doing well and looks like they can win titles, and they jump off when the team doesn’t look like it has a shot to contend. The difference between the Hawks and other teams is that other teams have contended for so long that they have built up a bigger base of die hard fans than the Hawks have. You and I are die hard fans, but we are also distinctly in the minority.

Sautee,
I dont expect the lineup change tonight. And I also said if there was no lineup change, then I expect to see a change in how minutes are distributed.
So I dont think he has to make a lineup change (and you’re right…he didnt promise a lineup change). He has the option of just changing minutes distribution.
Maybe he just reduces Bibby and Jamal’s minutes, maybe he increases Teague’s minutes, maybe Mo Evans and ZaZa get less minutes…lots of options.

I was watching the Orlando Magic series last year and although Dwigiht killed us it was the perimeter players killing us. I.E. Redick, Lewis, Pietrus, and especially Carter. Wing players kill us and our overall TEAM defense is suspect. How about in the first round with Brandon Jennings and company shooting threes lighting it up. We need better personnel. The common thread throughout this first half has been the dedication to get the ball in the post. They have gotten good looks when they get the ball down low.
This has been the case all season. The Hawks’ offense runs best when either Joe or Smoove gets the ball in the low post, Joe gets the ball coming off screens, and Al gets the ball in the mid range. Any time they deviate from this formula, the offense bogs down and they lose.

Bob is funny. The Bobcats haven’t “choked off the paint”. The Hawks have, by refusing to get it down low with the same consistency as the first half.
The Hawks beat themselves a hell of a lot more often than other teams beat them. There are three things the Hawks do well on offense, and they consistently go away from those things.

Nobody would have a problem with him doing something that caters to his strengths. Iso-Joe on the perimeter does not cater to his strengths. He is plainly and simply not quick enough to break anyone down off the dribble and get to the rim. Get him the ball coming off a screen or post him up against a smaller, weaker defender.

They won’t add the necessary peices to push the team to the next level.
At some point, you’ve gotta either:
A) Blow this team up

“no need to overreact..

I agree they needed to sign him to maintain their status as a playoff team, which is why I wasn’t really opposed to it when it happened, but at the same time by keeping him they definitively took themselves out of the running to become a title contender and basically announced to the world that they are satisfied maintaining the status quo of winning 50 games and losing in the 2nd round.
Of course, I trust Joe to take this team farther than they have gotten a hell of a lot more than than I would have trusted Rick Sund to find a suitable replacement for him if he had left.
Anyway, this loss was a result of awful tactics (specifically not getting the ball in the post) and was bigger than one man. LD is the guy to point the finger at, if anyone.

Marvin Williams, f###in sucks, he deserves to be traded
Zaza, he needs to be traded to a team and I don’t care what we get for him, anybody is better then him
Mo evens, definition of garbage , trade him in a package deal
Jamal Crawford, I think its bout time to get him out of here while people still might want him for a starting center in a package deal.. and just let somebody else be six man..

It’s not ALL our fault . . just partially. Maybe 5% – 10%. Maybe a better crowd gets them to play better.
I mean, that is if you believe that home court advantage does have some effect on a game. Only if you believe a good vocal crowd can rattle an opponent at the end of a game..
If the city as a whole doesn’t care about the team . . and the ownership doesn’t care about upgrading the personnel . . then the ASG may as well sell the team and move the Hawks out of Atlanta.
Move the team to Cincinnati . . lol . . so I can root for 3 schizophrenic teams from that town ( Bengals, Reds, and Hawks ). I’m 4.5 hours from Cincy, so the drive would be the same for me.
Damn . . Hawks, Vols, and the Cuse lose . . . all stupidly too. Bad basketball day for me.

I just finished watching the Atlanta Hawks play “STUPIDBALL” again. Some folks are glutons for punishment and I am definitely one of them. Now if this was the first time a 20 point lead was blown that would be one thing but it’s not. The Hawks are not basketball intelligent. It’s time to start over with draft choices and trades. Lets call this season over and done with because if they continue with the same team it’s going to be more stupidity on the court. Time to say goodbye to Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Powell, Mo Evans and Bibby. We will not make the playofs and if by some chance we do, it’s over and done with in round one. Time to rebuild and get rid of all of that dead weight. There are players out there that wants to play because of the love of the game. These guys only love their paycheck. Honestly, I don’t know what’s more sad, the fact that they went on and lost, or the fact that anyone with half a brain could see it coming right before halftime. The Hawks have all the talent to win (not to win big, not to win a championship, but to win). They just don’t have the heart. Larry Drew is a good coach, but that’s not going to matter if he has a team that only executes the game plan 2 out of 4 quaters of every game. I like this team. We’ve got good players, but to lose a game like Tuesday night and follow that up with an egg like this is inexcusable. Changes are not only necessary, they’re imperative.

I saw this coming when Dominique announced with 6 minutes left in the game that the Hawks had this under control and in the bag with a 3 point lead. Obviously, Joe played hard enough to earn an all-star spot because he seems to not try as hard now. This team is seriously flawed mentally and that’s something that LD cannot fix. It’s time for Sund and ASG to seriously start putting people on the trading block. I am convinced that these guys are complacent and think they are safe in Atlanta.

It’s not like this is that surprising. Same old story. Poor perimeter defense causes the Hawks to lose another game. That’s on L.D. as much as anyone too. Especially tonight, I find it appropriate to place a large portion of the blame on L.D. Anyone who knows anything significant about the Hawks knows that their backcourt combo of Bibby and Crawford is the weakest backcourt in the league and then know that dribble penetration will always work against them. Livingston and Jackson abused the Hawks perimeter defense all night long, and Drew continued to stick with the Bibby-Crawford backcourt. He deserved what happened. I can’t say that the whole team deserved to lose. Al and Josh played with a lot of effort tonight and both had nice games, but as usual, that didn’t matter with the poor perimeter defense.
On a night where Jamal clearly had nothing going and was giving nothing positive to the team while he was on the court, it made absolutely no sense to stick with him in the backcourt over a more reliable defender. Damien Wilkins should have been in the game to defend Jackson or livingston, whom were getting anything they wanted all night against our guards. Poor decision by L.D. to stick wtih offense over defense (especially when the offense was nonexistant from the backcourt “go-to” guys). I’m really far beyond annoyed with this team. If personnel changes are not made, I don’t see any of our perimeter problems being solved. It’s incredibly obvious at this point that L.D. is all talk and is not going to “shake up his lineup” by making changes that actually matter. He’s not going to bench Bibby, he’s not going to play Jamal less minutes in favor of better defenders, he’s not going to bench Josh when Josh is playing out of control. The only guy who may go to the bench is probably Marvin who is usually the scapegoat for losses after Mike Bibby.
No perimeter defense, no rings. It’s that simple.

Lewis . . he shouldn’t be on the bench in the first place. The only time he should come off the bench, is if we play a scoring center.
Drew is an offensive coach, so his adjustments will be offensive on most nights.

They are our so-called core group. They are a big laugh. We need folks who just want to play the game because they love the game. I can take losing with pride and dignity because of hustle and effort anyday but this thing we have called a team only care about their paychecks. They need to go. I say trade em, get some draft choices and be done with it. This season is lost and will not be found. It’s hard to be a fan when the team has no pride. The HAWKS stopped working the ball inside and then started missing jump shots. I’m not sure what LD is thinking but Wilkins clearly needed to come in and cover Livingston. Either we need to trade or players should be benched.
Bibby needs to be on the bench…Why are the fans the only ones that can see this???? He’s a BONAFIDE SCRUB….useless on defense….spotty at best on offense….doesn’t want the ball as the PG but instead will let his PF dribble the ball up the court with a defender on him….can’t penetrate…just a scrub. THat’s not a knock on his career…he was borderline great while it lasted but nowadays… BENCH
I can’t comprehend what Mo Evans does well but it’s probably because the answer is nothing. He should never play.
Jamal Crawford is only a spark plug. If he’s not hitting his shots he needs to be on the bench. He plays no defense.
Our rotation is too long. It needs to be shortened from 11 to 9. JJ, Marvin, Josh, Al, Zaza, Collins, JC1, Damien are the only ones that should get PT unless someone gets injured. Teague needs to start and Bibby needs to be over there with Etan

Something that really worries me when I watch L.D.’s post game interviews is it’s tough to tell whether he’s lying when he blames the losses on things like “settling for jump shots” or “lack of intensity” or “no sense of urgency” or whether he truly believes that these are the causes for the losses. I hope the reason is the former and not the latter because Drew is actually being honest when he makes these excuses, then he should not be the head coach on any team. Any basketball novice could see that the Hawks biggest problems are on the defensive end. It’s almost always the perimeter defense that kills us. Our offense is above average, but our defense on the perimeter is laughable. All teams have off-nights shooting the ball, but good teams can fall back onto their defense to still win games. With our pathetic backcourt lineup of Bibby and Jamal, we can never play elite defense. Get it together, L.D. Stop trying to make lemonade with prunes. It’s not going to happen.

He doesn’t need to say it publicly, but if he really knows what the issue is, there’s not excuse for him not trying to correct it. There was no excuse for why Bibby and Jamal played major minutes (especially with Jamal being absolutely useless in this game) , while Teague and Damien sat for virtually the entire night. I hate to sound too negative, but it’s very frustrating to see the same mistakes cost us games over and over with no adjustments being made to prevent the mistakes.

Jae Evolution,
You’re spot on with your comment about L.D. having limited options. As of now, I don’t think he can do much outside of benching Bibby and going with defense over offense when Jamal clearly doesn’t have it going, but as far as major improvements, we need to make trades to accomplish that. We need a true playmaker at the point-guard position and desperately need some well-rounded guards who play both ends of the floor. At this point, I’d settle for a point guard who isn’t even an offensive threat as long as he can be trusted as a playmaker and defender, but unfortuntely there aren’t many quality PGs out there that are available. I’m ready to cut ties with Jamal to see if we can get something close to that though.

When has L.D. ever taken the blame for a loss? He’s not man enough to do that. I don’t have much respect at all for Drew as a person or as a coach. I think he’d be alright on a rebuilding team or on a team that is trying to make the playoffs for the first time in years, but he really brings nothing to our team as far as improvement goes. If we wanted to be 33-20, we could have just stuck with Woodson. I’m sick of L.D., but since he was only hired to save money, I doubt he will be fired any time soon.

What I don’t understand is the HAWKS have shown no ability to minimize their deficiencies. They have to get better PG play or they clearly won’t make it out of the 2nd round of the Playoffs. (maybe even the first round) They have to develop Teague or trade for someone that can drive and finish. Or every 4th quarter were going to watch the HAWKS miss a bunch of jumpshots because they can’t drive and get to the free-throw line.

I really think LD is so concerned about his job and winning now, he has zero interest in developing Teague. He wants vets, and folks to win now, not later. I hope he knows what he is doing, because as of right now, I don’t trust him.
Besides having a motion offense on occasion, and going big when the occasion arises, just how is he different than Woody? Just asking.

Our record is worse than last year, and we’re heading on a 7 game road trip, and we are playing really bad basketball. Bibby has lost it,
Jamal has also
JJ is as well
We have no inside game
No PG
No Coach who will develop youth – JC2 is playing way less than Teague did last season
A Coach who insists on playing Mo over Wilkens
” ” ” ” ” ‘” Bibby over Teague
I said a few days ago, we are close to being a bad team, closer than many think. When the Sixers and Bobcats come to your place and beat you, your in trouble.

Haha @ Tyronn Lue making an appearance. One thing about it . . with the Godfather of the ISO ( Lue ) on the team, we didn’t have these 4th quarter offensive meltdowns.
He couldn’t guard anybody, but he’d at least score.
Maybe we can leave Teague in Detroit, and exchange him for Will Bynum. Or leave Jamal in Phoenix and bring aboard Nash.

SteveW while I agree with your statement completely, the single reason that Jordan doesn’t get many minutes is because we are completely overloaded at the SG position it’s not even funny. Last year Jeff Teague was pretty much our only backup PG so he HAD to get minutes regardless of Coach’s view on Rookies.

Other than having an “offensive system” I don’t see any difference between LD and Woodrow…This team still goes away from what gets them the lead, still sticks with unproductive vets, and still cant score in the 4th quarter. Teams know that when LD goes with the Bibby and Jamal backcourt just attack and attack those two. For some reason recently when LD has needed perimeter defense he has gone to the worst two perimeter defenders on the team….The Hawks need a trade but I don’t know if one is coming. It was reported a few weeks back that it was doubtful a move will be made. I honestly don’t know if this team will even make it out of the first round this year…..If the Hawks aren’t going to trade for a pg its time to give Teague a chance because they aren’t going to go anywhere with Bibby.

Its funny with the Hawks that big leads normally leads to the Hawks losing. If the Hawks go up big early, they normally fold late, and lose the game. If the Hawks go down big early, they never rally to win or take the lead. After Joe, Josh, and Al, this team sucks (I’m including Jamal because most nights he suck on at least of the court (defense), and 2 out of 5 nights he sucks on the offense also. I didn’t get to see the game tonight. But it seems as if the Hawks went away from what was working so well in the first half (Josh in the post). Sometimes I feel like everyone in a suit needs to be fired, from the owners to management to the coaches.

“Najeh – What’s your solution for this team? I know mine, but LD ain’t goin’ to come close it looks like. You got any ideas?”
Haha… depends on how realistic you want me to be. If the personnel can’t be changed, there’s only so much that can be done. It starts with LD reserving a seat on the bench for whoever brings the ball up any time the ball doesn’t go in the post. At this point it should be blatantly obvious to one and all that when the ball goes in the post, the Hawks play well, and when the ball doesn’t go in the post, the Hawks suck. There is no excuse for continuing to go away from the three things that work for this team — Joe and Smoove in the low post, Joe coming off screens, and Al getting looks in the mid range area. Any possession on which the Hawks don’t do one of those things is a failure.
At this point, I am also in favor of starting Teague for five games or so just to see what will happen. Maybe he sucks and definitively proves that he’s not the answer, but maybe he proves that he can be an upgrade over Bibby. It’s time to make that decision once and for all.
If the personnel can be changed, well… this, or this.

It was about this time last year in which the wheels were supposedly falling off the wagon. Then March came around, looking at a bunch of elite teams coming to Philips, and they took care of business.
No need for the panic button . . . yet.
I’ll say that we go 4 – 3 on the road trip, with wins over Detroit, Golden St, Portland and Phoenix. Depending of if a Melo trade happens, we may take that game too.
It’s the nature of this team the past 3 years. When people want to dirt on them, they always rise to the occasion. We’ll see if a shake up in the lineup is in order, or if the captains on this team fully take charge.
LOL @ rusty . . Jamal shot the ball like Betty White tonight, and you have the nerve to single out JJ ( who was horrible, no doubt )
@ Grandad . . JJ deferred to the rest of the team for 3 quarters, then tried to turn it on in the 4th. Problem was, he settled for the jumper. With the January that JJ had, we wouldn’t even be in the position we’re in right now without him.
He needs to play smarter though. There’s no doubt on that. But anyone suggesting a trade of JJ, Smith, or Al . . and not bringing in a better player . . are out of their minds.
We have an overall talent issue on this team that is rearing its ugly head in recent games.

As it is currently constructed, this roster is HOPELESS. I’ve been a suffering Hawks fan for almost 35 years, and I’m reaching that horribly uncomfortable point of silently rooting against them because change is so desperately needed. I don’t consider making the playoffs a success, nor do I consider 50 wins an acceptable target, especially since this team was completely rebuilt from the ground up under Woodson. It’s absolutely inexcusable that nobody can even PRETEND TO CARE when the offense bogs down and everyone starts settling for jumpers for the 15th straight 4th quarter or whatever it’s been.
If a total meltdown is what it’ll take for Sund or the Anti-Spirit Group to get off their complacent butts and actually DO SOMETHING, then let’s have it. This team’s ceiling is exactly the same as it was last year — maybe win a 1st round matchup and then get blown out in the 2nd round by a team that knows exactly what we’re going to do, and gives us all the jumpers we want…while beating us by 20 every night.

Najeh, here I am.
I came home from the game and really wanted nothing to do with anything Hawk related. This team is a disaster.
Anyways…the season ticket meeting with Michael Gerron…
I have to admit this. I left the meeting kind of liking the guy. He seems like a good dude. He was kind of straight with us about things, but not as straight as Billy Knight used to be when he hosted these meetings.
Here are some highlights:
1. Gerron said that the Hawks are always looking into trades (he said this multiple times). As of right now, there is nothing that makes sense. He cautioned that so many teams in the past have made trades and gotten worse. He cited Orlando this year, whose record is either about the same or worse since their big trade. Also, Philly, back in ‘08, was seen as a team on the rise. Then they trade away Miller and Dalembert. Caused them to vanish from the scene (until last Tuesday, anyway).
2. He defended the ASG on the notion that they are cheap. The Hawks have the 7th highest payroll in the NBA (said this several times). He pointed out all the money they sank into Joe, Josh, and Al. He said the payroll grew with the team, which is what they planned all along.
3. Someone asked about a trade for a guard who could defend better. Gerron agreed that this was a weak area. But, again, said that they have not had a deal come their way that makes sense.
4. He praised Rick Sund for being patient and tight lipped. Pointed out that Rick Sund has made some good moves. Namely, getting Jamal Crawford for parts off the scrap heep (my words, not his). I still don’t like Rick Sund.
5. He said that he is frustrated that the city does not turn out to support the team at many games. Someone asked about the blowout losses at home. Gerron said that he truely feels part of the blame is lack of support. “We sometimes do not get the home court lift”. Hard to argue with that. He said that as a native of Atlanta he has seen all the teams struggle with attendance.
7. Also, he mentioned that Josh Childress simply did not want to play here anymore. He said that Josh saw himself as a starter. And, also mentioned that Josh hardly ever plays for the Suns now. I took that as a “told you so” comment towards Chills.
8. Said he likes the lineup with Twin starting.
If I remember anything else, I will post it. I really want the team to make some kind of trade. I understand the caution Gerron talked about. But, some teams have bettered themselves with deadline moves. They are not always failures.
Really, to me, I am going to lose a lot of faith if something is not done. I do not think there is a person who follows this team that does not think some type of change is in order.
Section 303
February 13th, 2011
1:45 am
One more thing…I see I did not write my #6 highlight. I thought it, but didn’t write it. Here it is…
6. Someone really ripped Bibby. The fan told Gearon that Bibby was “worthless” if he was not hitting his outside shot. And, that Bibby was a defensive disaster. Gerron told the guy he was being a little too hard on Bibby. That Bibby is a leader on the court/in the locker room. And, while he agrees that Bibby is not a “lock down defender”, he can still guard people.
What was funny about this was that Bibby was just out on the practice court before Gearon started. The court was split in half with a curtain. Bibby was on the other side shooting around. Would have been interesting had he been within earshot for the guy’s blasting.
Also…I never asked a question. Was not feeling it. And, besides, all my questions would have been about potential trades (like, are they going to make one). Gearon had already said, several times, that they have not seen a deal that works for them.

Time to play the young fellas. Lets see what Jeff Teague and Jordon Crawford have in their tank. Lock Joe Johnson in the small forward position, he’s the multi million dollar player. He should be able to produce from that spot. Damian Wilkins need to play more because he actually plays defense. Time to see how much gas Etan Thomas has in the tank, at least he bangs. No one has a clue as to why Mo Evans is playing at all. What is going to be done about “smoove”…even when he has a good game he still plays dumb. How can Marvin Williams be used correctly when his game is absent 80% of the time . Jamal Crawford is attempting to play some defense but when his shooting is off he becomes useless, he’s fast enough to get to the inside but I think contact bothers him. Mike Bibby has fallen to 2nd mebbee 3rd tier, essentially becoming no help at all. “Z” Pachulia just needs to bang and play and cut all that other chit out. LD needs to look toward the future now, this season will not be salvaged unless you call 41 and 41 a good season and that can happen playing the young studs and making some trades. The Hawks would fair better now getting draft choices and a few players that are as consistant as what we have in the talent pool now, mebbee not as atheletic but has a desire to win. Move now while the iron is hot and look toward next year.
