Last night on Twitter during the game and in the post-game blog I mentioned that good teams just don’t take home beatdowns on the regular like the Hawks.
Shoot, remember a few days ago when Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak was talking about shaking up his roster?. That was after the Lakers took a 16-point home loss . . . to the Celtics:
“I try to be as objective as possible, but I’m concerned that our performance is not living up to our talent level,” Kupchak said at the time. “Our record is certainly OK. But we’ve lost a bunch of home games. We’ve lost a couple of big games at home. And to me, those are red flags.”
The red flags are waving for the Hawks after yet another white-flag surrender at Philips. Elias Sports Bureau provides the dirty details (second item, though let the “crowning achievement” in the lead headline serve as a bitterly sarcastic taunt of the Hawks):
There have been three games this season in which the home team lost by at least 30 points, and the Atlanta Hawks have been on the short end of the scoreboard in two of those games.
The Hawks’ 34-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday (117-83) is the second-worst home defeat in the NBA this season, trailing only the 41-point defeat Atlanta had against the New Orleans Hornets on Jan. 21 (100-59). The only other team to lose a home game by at least 30 points this season is the Charlotte Bobcats, 93-62 to the Boston Celtics on Dec. 11. . . .
At 33-19, Atlanta has the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Should the Hawks finish the season at least 10 games above .500, the Elias Sports Bureau says they would join one other such team in NBA history to lose two home games by at least 30 points. The 1969-70 Baltimore Bullets had 30-point home losses to the Suns and Knicks, yet finished the season 50-32.
Remember, too, there could be another couple historically ugly Ls for the Hawks if not for circumstance and NBA decorum.
The Bucks called off the dogs after they took a 29-point lead into the fourth quarter. They were up by 26 with 7:51 to play when a JC2-led run in garbage time prevented another possible 30-point L. Instead, the final losing margin was a normal-looking 108-91.
The Celtics were up 85-56 near the end of the third quarter when KG and Co. took a seat. Boston led by 31 with 4:31 to play (97-66) and by 29 with 3:31 to go (99-70). Twin and Josh Powell scored for the Hawks and the Celtics failed to score on their last eight possessions. So Atlanta fell 99-76, still ugly but not outrageously so.
As it stands, the Hawks have four double-digit losses at home, all by at least 17 points. The three teams above them in the standings have just two such losses combined among their 13 home Ls: Miami’s 93-77 defeat to Indiana and Chicago’s 107-78 loss to Orlando. And those games were back on Nov. 22 and Dec. 1, respectively, while two of the Hawks’ shellackings have come in the last 18 days. Even Orlando, which has its own issues at home, has just two double-digit Ls there: 104-94 vs. Utah on Nov. 10 and 123-101 to San Antonio on Dec. 23.
So the next time the Hawks say something along the lines of “These things happen” (and we know they will), the retort should be: “No, they don’t. Not to ‘good’ teams.”

But, MC, you need to be patient. The team is young. They’re installing a new offense. We can’t make knee-jerk decisions about our sacrosanct core. We should deliberate some more. Things like this happen over an 82 game season.

Ownership went through the motions this offseason and the players are following their lead. I find the ho hum attitude of the players and coaches after these losses even more disturbing. Go read soem of the quotes and you wil lsee things like “we just got to put this loss behind us”, “Sometimes these things happen”. Those were after the most recen beat down. At least the quotes after last nights embaressment were a bit better but words are easy.

It starts from the top. Obviously the top brass could care less or you would hear more rumblings. You cant have a company as shaky as the Atlanta Spirit running a team that you expect to do well. They cant get their act together but somehow the Hawks and Thrashers are expected to succeed?
If we sell the team to someone who gives a flying eff, then maybe it would create a top to bottom demeanor where 30 point loss at home are unacceptable. If no one holds anyone accountable, then you will continue to have angry fans who increasingly “give up” on being a Hawks fan and move to greener pastures.
People are fans of teams for more than just one player, or the city, etc. Fans enjoy the respect franchises get from top to bottom. Look at the Patriots or the Celtics…they are respected in every facet. The Hawks have good players but there isnt a leader of men anywhere in the Atlanta Spirit or the Hawks. Its time to stop being nice and PC, and start rolling heads.

Michael,
That’s great stuff. Thanks for writing this and providing the numbers.
I love Kupchak’s reaction to that Bucks loss by the Lakers. There’s none of the poo-poo bullsh#t we hear from Sund (when we actually hear from Sund)/ASG. Losses like we’ve seen at home to Bucks, C’s, Hornets, and ‘6ers are unacceptable. If the players don’t realize that, than changes need to be made.
Funny…the GM of a team coming off 3-straight Finals was feeling urgency over an ugly home loss. Our, GM/ownership, coming off quitting in the 2nd round and getting booed off their home floor, thinks everything is A-OK after getting their brains beat in four times at home.
Winning organization vs a candy a$$ organization.

It’s hard to really buy into this team with performances like this one, and it’s not about getting beat it’s about showing up and putting forth effort. It’s almost impossible (without trying) to get down by 30 befort halftime (yet it’s happened twice to this team at home).
It’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Hawks will make the playoffs, it’s the apathetic performances and eager willingness to quit that gives this team’s fan base no hope (for anything other than a first or second round debacle).

And if they go 3-4, then you can continue to get “lack of energy” quotes from the usual suspects while Sund quietly scouts one-dimensional players with a high upside and no ability to make an immediate impact on this team (unlike Darren Collison, Dajuan Blair or Landry Fields).

30+ point loss to the 76′ers at home? I mean at least show up and play in front of your home crowd. They were done before the game ever started. I just don’t think they take their coach seriously. I don’t think the coach is prepared to handle these types of events. Sure, it’s just one game. It sure is embarassing for me. It’ll be even more embarassing getting blown out each home game during the playoffs…
On a side note: Sund and the Hawks won’t make any trades to “shake things up”. Well maybe Josh Powell for Priest Lauderdale. Besides, no true NBA stars want to play in Atlanta. Why would they?

The fans take the losses harder than the players and ASG.
All Sund wants is for the team to be competitive. He knows
the team is incapable of winning the EC. If the team gets
lucky and happens to make it to the conference finals,
Sund and ASG will act as if the Hawks won the NBA
championship.
The players and Sund will go home to their mansions
and gated commuinities, and quickly forget about their
quick exit from the playoffs. We will be left to contemplate
missed opportunities and what ” could have been” if a
timely key trade had been made.
ASG has too many owners. I miss the days when Ted Turner
owned the team, and was willing to invest the money needed
to make timely improvements. I wish that car dealer that bid
against ASG had been awarded the franchise.

These Hawks are a funny team. They’ve already won 17 games on the road before the all-star break, which should be a sign of more maturity. But, at the same time, they are not as tough at home as they used to be, and losses like last night are hard to explain. I had the misfortune of being at both the Bucks and Celtics blowouts. No way to build a fan base.

badpick,
I’m not sure what it is that has you believing Marvin has everything you advertise him to have. If he does have the kind of game that you claim he has, which is the game a legit #2 draft pick (IE – Kevin Durant) has, then he wouldn’t resort to taking the back seat, as he tends to do. He wouldn’t be looking to pass everytime he touches the ball. He’d look to initiate his own offense, whether the play is drawn up for him or not.
To suggest that Marvin Williams wasn’t a bad pick at this point is ludicrous. He was a bad pick. Marvin’s had every opportunity to prove himself since the day he got here. He didn’t rot on the bench like most of our rookies nowadays tend to do. He’s been playing meaningful minutes for much of his career, and he’s yet to show anybody that he was worth the pick (aside from you at least).
It makes no difference to me if plays are drawn up for you or not. If he was worth the pick, he should be the face of this franchise. At the very least, he should be moving in that direction. He’s yet to do either, and it’s hard for anybody to buy that it’s because our coaches don’t “draw up enough plays for him”. Fact is, he’s an inconsistent role player who will occasionally be good for a good game.
He’s had enough time. It’s not as if he’s been rotting on the bench unable to showcase his stuff. He’s had a handful of opportunities, and point blank, hasn’t lived up to a #2 pick.
Chris Paul and Derron Williams will always be thrown into the conversation with Marvin Williams. Both of those guys are the face of their franchises. Marvin Williams is not.
Al Horford came into the league after Marvin Williams, and people can see him working his way into a “face of the franchise” type of player.
Marvin has to demand more plays be drawn up for him with his play. You make it sound as if the coaches are holding him back. That’s not the case. Al Horford gets plays called for himself because he’s shown he can handle himself on the court. Marvin hasn’t. If anything, Marvin is holding himself back, which I still don’t buy. I just don’t think he’s capable of being the player you want him to be.

Hawks fans are the most fair weather fans in the world, or should I say Atlanta fans? We still have a good record, but just had a crappy game..relax. It pisses me off to see everyone always jump on Josh Smith when the Hawks loose, TRADE JOSH TRADE JOSH TRADE JOSH. The man is having a good year, should have been a all-star…relax. Given, they have holes…and are not going to win a championship…but its still better than blowing up the team…..remember when we blew up the team..>Mutumbo-Laettner-steve smith-blacklock? We need to add pieces, without blowing up the roster. All that being said, speaking logically, they need to address the center and pg position in the near future, hopefully sooner than later. Horford playing PF would make this team much better, and having a PG to run the offense…would really make Joe, Josh, and Horford a legit team. Marvin and Bibby gotta go, that makes a lot more sense.

Watched about five minutes of this game and saw that it was going to be awful. I’m usually not that much of a fair-weather fan, but that was painful last night. The key I think was that Al was out, but it’s no excuse. Also, is it just me, or do some of our players look really tired right now? Couldn’t be that they have literally played close to 3 seasons worth of all-game basketball? I mean, it seems that Larry Drew is using up guys as much as Woodson did.

And MC,
Great stuff on your blog write-up.
That’s hitting the nail on the head. Point blank, ‘good teams’ don’t suffer these types of losses, especially not as often as the Hawks tend to.
Yet another reason why I could care less if they decided to blow this team up.
This city is desperate for a legitimate championship contender. We got behind the Falcons, and although they disappointed this postseason, it’s clear they’re headed in the right direction, and I think they’ll work themselves into a perennial contender.
The Hawks on the other hand, are not. They seem to be stuck in the same mess they’ve been stuck in for 2-3 seasons now. We’ve had the same personnel look for 2-3 seasons now too. The only real change we’ve seen personnel wise was the J.Crawford deal. People were excited about him when he got here, but truthfully, for me, that’s worn off now. We’ve seen what this teams ceiling is, and it isn’t good enough to get where this city wants them to be.
I’ve said a couple of times, this ownership group makes it impossible for anybody to have faith in this organization. The owners are set on letting this core mature, but when you see other teams around the league with the same type of youthful talent the Hawks have at either the same level as the Hawks or even better (OKC – Chicago), patience is hard to preach. Fans wonder exactly how good this core group is supposed to be, because it’s not as if they’re all fresh into the league. OKC has a younger “core” than the Hawks, and they’re clearly on the rise. Are the Hawks on the rise? Or have they maxed out? It comes off as if these bum owners are playin’ us, which they are. Until the owners dedicate themselves to the process of getting this team beyond what we’ve come to expect of them, this team will stay as is.
If the owners don’t care, why should we? Just a big waste of time.

The fact is this team can’t even compete with the top 3. That would require the margin of defeat under 10 points.
Trade everyone but Horford and acquire draft picks. This team will never compete with the likes of Boston, Orlando, and Miami. The front office needs to start building a team through the draft that will be ready to CONTEND,not just compete, for a championship five years down the road while those other teams will be “old.” That is the goal, right?

Considering that the Hawks haven’t had any other #2 lottery picks in the past 55 years, that’s not surprising. If you mean the worst #2 pick by any team, there are a few dozen guys ahead of him. Just in the past decade, there’s Stromile Swift, Darko Milicic, and Hasheem Thabeet. He’s also no worse than Michael Beasley or Tyson Chandler. Jay Williams is kinda unfair to rate for obvious reasons. Not saying it was the right pick – because it wasn’t – but it was far, far, far from the worst #2 pick ever.

Good writeup MC.
Is it possible for you to get an interview with Rick or Mr. Gearon? Maybe you could do a piece on how the home attendance has dropped this year, and see what their response is.
Or what they think it will take to bring more fans to Phillips. Because getting beatdown at home is not going to make fans come to watch you play.
And it would be interesting to talk to Rick about his plans for the trade deadline, and if he still thinks this core is good enough.
Because 50 games into the season, we should not be getting this kind of beatdown.
Under Woody, the Hawks lost 17 regular season home games in 2 years. The worst home loss in those 2 seasons was a 24 point home loss to Lakers (in 08-09), and a 17 pt loss to Orlando (in 09-10).
This season, we have already lost 8, including some beatdowns. I cant understand why. I know Horford didnt play in the Philly or N.O. game, but still…Unacceptable.

Al’s dad is making noise about them needing to move Al to the PF spot on a permanent basis. What’s next logically, Al will start to make noise. Kinda like the Larry Drew Jr. situation. The Hawks are not a good team, they are mediocre. Lastly, they human beings not robots. We all have limitations, when they get in the playoffs this year and realize once again that there limitations stem from personnel issues, they will quit again but this time it will be permanent. Meaning, they will just stop caring to the point of even wanting to make it to the playoffs and get blasted. Sund and the ASG are running this team and franchise into the ground purposely. this loss, the NO loss (looking like the hardwood GB Packers, same result) and the brain farts vs. clearly lower teams (DET, NJ twice and nail-biters vs. SAC and LAC) is clearly sending signals that the “core” is flawed.
dunno what Sund is gonna do, but if our team looks the same after the All-Star break, then it tells me that the ownership and GM are just happy with turnstiles turning (albeit slower than other teams) vs. getting within shouting (too far away for spitting) distance of an O’Brien trophy.

You people have been looking for me and here I am. As GM it is important not to PANIC and make a move after a 30 point. Losses like this occur if when one of your BIG GUNS is hurt. It’s not like the team came out with NO ENERGY. As long as we have a Mike Bibby who is in the THE PRIME of this career and Joe Johnson as our LEADER we will be a stable team. If you throw in the INTELLIGENCE of Josh Smith and Marvin’s UPSIDE, we have to maintain what we are doing. We are YOUNG and you as fans have to be PATIENT. We are still on our way to 50 wins and another PLAYOFF appearance. In my 30 plus years of experience I have never seen such a team with so much POTENTIAL and PROMISE. The Hawks’ ascent to 2nd round detritus leaves us as empty and frustrated as when they were winning fewer than 30 games each year. Orlando got it right with their recent trades: if you can’t seriously see yourselves in the conference finals or better, then keep making the changes until you can. After all these years of the Hawks not making it into the conference finals–I believe the last time was 1969–the biggest shock is not that the fans don’t show up enough, but rather that so many do show up.

The only viable options for trade that would work for the Hawks would be PG: Either Steve Nash or Chauncey Billups. And C: Either Chris Kaman or Nene Hilario. You could get both in a package if you go after Billups and Nene.

As I stated in the Hoop World’s article, we have Mike BIbby who is in his PRIME leading a YOUNG CAST of TALENT. That trade wouldn’t make any sense. MC,
There in lies the difference between the Lakers’ expectations, and the Hawks’ expectations. The Hawks want to have a competitive team, while the Lakers want a championship team.
The Lakers are not in it just to say they had a good season. Their seasons are measured by championships. The Hawks are content with having a good season….winning 48+ games.
Well, they’ve done that for several years in a row now, so it’s time for the mindset to switch to wanting to win a championship.
The players know with which teams they can compete when the playoffs come around, and I’m sure that the Hawks’ players know that they’re not going to win the Easter Conference title spot with their current roster. There would have to be major injuries of key players on Boston, Miami, Orlando, & Chicago.

Ok LD, you’ve convinced me. We don’t need to develop Teague. We have a very good PG in Bibby. Bibby at 32 seems to be getting stronger as the season wears on. He’ll probably look like Chris Paul by the time the playoffs get here.
Thanks for helping LD.
On a more serious note, if the Bulls can win without Noah, the Celts without Rondo, the Heat without Wade, I don’t want to hear why we can’t win without Al.

So go ahead and win you 48 – 53 regular season games, get demolished in the playoffs (as has happened the past 2 season), then tell the fans why ticket prices will increase, and that the ASG is willing to spend to floor a championship team, but take no actions in personnel.
The Hawks have some bargaining chips this year, and if they don’t make a move, there’s no way to make the fans believe they’re serious about trying to win a title….at least, not this year!!!!

The Hawks are all about the bottomline and they are not even good at that. The bottom line is money, they are not taking back any contracts without sending out contracts. Jamal will not be traded for that reason. They will not send out $10 million from Jamal and take back $10 million on the books for next year. I really believe we could get Devin Harris and Kris Humphries for Jamal, and Jeff Teague, but the Hawks are not taking back Harris contract for next year. Billups and Nene add up to over $20 million next year, they don’t want long term contracts such as Marvin and Zaza and we don’t want contracts either, so forget that. Our best bet is for some of these entertainers in Atl to buy this team before it gets moved

Enough is enough! Trade Josh to either LA for Kaman or Minnesota for Kevin Love. Al needs someone who will show up and go to the hoop or consistently hit the free throw line jumper every night and help him on the boards. Josh is just not mature in his game to go along with his talent! He never recognizes what he needs to do depending on the game to help the team, he just plays in a vacuum! Next trade Bibby and Crawford to Phoenix for Nash. We need another leader NOW. The ball needs to move and iso-Joe needs his partner in non-movement gone! Finally, Marvin, Zaza, and #1 pick to 76ers for Elton Brand or to the Grizzlies for Mayo. Prefer Brand, but Mayo would work and move iso-Joe to the small forward spot. with Nash team could run, move the ball, and he would be the only defensive liability. Horford and Love or Kaman would flourish and Teague and Jordan Crawford would get some minutes to either shine or prove they don’t belong in the league! Come on Rick, get it done! Otherwise, please talk to the Knicks or Nets about iso-Joe and he can take Bibby with him.

We were a WEAK team for over 5 years before we started this WINNING tradition.
ELITE teams are those that end up in the Final 8 in the NBA. That means making the 2nd round makes us elite.
We have ALREADY BEATEN THE HEAT AND MAGIC THIS YEAR. These two teams consist of players who have been to the NBA FInals. Therefore, we are Finals Caliber.
Mike Bibby is in his PRIME
Joe Johnson is BETTER than Kobe Bryant
Jeff Teague has ISIAH THOMAS-LIKE POTENTIAL
Marvin is BETTER than Jamison was in his prime
Josh Smith is MORE ATHLETIC THAN DWIGHT AND IS THE CLOSEST THING IN THIS LEAGUE TO LEBRON

OB, now you know you are wasting your time….you already know what Sund is going to say? You don’t need to hear it anymore from him.
Gearon might possibly slip and say something, but I don’t think it will be anything to improve the core/team.
SteveW, Al is the only player we will struggle to win without. Smoove is 2nd. You can have leader Joe go out, you can have Marvin come up with another ailment, you can even have JC1 sulk if he wants. We can still win some games in this league. The one question I have is how would we do with Bibster unable to go? Insert joke here……
Get me Nene to pair him up with Al and we will have something very formidable. I like him almost as much as grabbing Billups. Problem is we don’t have enough resources to offer other than future #1s.
If Denver got a commitment from Melo, that team could do some damage and challenge the Lakers….I feel sorry for the fans in Denver, who are stuck to just watch their opportunties wither.
I wonder who is showing more frustration, Denver or us?

Here is what the Sporting News ranks as the team most in need of getting a trade to improve…
1. Atlanta Hawks
Needs: Point guard, center.
Deal to be made: Atlanta sends F Josh Smith, PG Mike Bibby, C Zaza Pachulia and C Jason Collins to Golden State for PG Stephen Curry, C Andris Biedrins, C Dan Gadzuric and G Charlie Bell.
Outlook: Most executives around the league aren’t expecting any major moves from Atlanta, but the fact is, the Hawks are a very good team that doesn’t quite have the pieces to break through to the next tier. So they should go for the shakeup.
Curry has shown he can be a point guard, and though his defense is lacking, he will help the Hawks offense run much more smoothly. Biedrins has struggled, but is a talented defensive-and-rebounding center, and acquiring him allows Al Horford to move to power forward, which will make Horford a better player. They’ll miss Smith, of course, but this deal allows the Hawks to put out a more traditional lineup.
Though the Warriors really like Curry, there is still the question of whether he is a long-term fit with Monta Ellis. Getting Smith to play small forward with David Lee at power forward seems ideal for an up-tempo team, and Dorell Wright can move to a sixth-man role, which is perfect for him.
Orlando, Dallas and Utah fall in line behind the Hawks in the need to make a move. I think TSN overvalues the Hawks’ pieces in that trade.

Tryin to get by, tryin to get by…
This is what happens when u just tryin to get by…ASG did nothing to improve this squad and Thank God it’s imploding at home right in front of their faces and everybody else’s. As long as they could continue to squeak out wins, ASG was satisfied. They could tow the line and hold out for playoff and luxury tax disbursements. Afterall, an ugly win is still a win. But Now?
Getting booed off your homecourt, twice in two weeks, in front of a reasonable crowd is unsettling. The first could be considered an aberration to the average fan, but die-hard know and have known for quite some time, that this team isn’t that good. Now, it appears they aren’t good at all. Especially without Horford; wasn’t he missing against the Hornets as well?
The players have openly bitched about the home crowd routing for the other team. JJ has repeatedly said he “doesn’t care about the fans” and ASG rewards him with $120M dollars. Now, those dollars have come home to roost.
The fans won’t continue to pay good money after bad for this entertainment product. Luckily, some real stars are coming to town and unless major changes are made soon, we will get more of last night.
Bottom line is as LD says, the Hawks are soft. And not only soft, imbalanced and lacking complete skill sets. The one player, with a near complete set, Horford, misses a game and they lose by 30.
Where’s the leadership? JJ gets $120M, scores 6pts and we get blown by 30? So, what’s going to happen come playoff time? Playoffs, what playoffs… they don’t deserve to go to the playoffs, they are too embarrassing.
It’s time to spit the bit, the future is now. Horford is the centerpiece. Decide which other two/three to keep and starting setting the table for next year. This is a wrap!

Its Not A Bad Pick is certainly Marvin himself or his brother. Anyway tell him he is playing better but I think he (you) should come off the bench. Also, if it was not “a bad pick” lets call NO or Utah and make a straight up deal for the people drafted after Williams and see if they would do it. Actually out of the top 10, only I would only chose Williams over Martell Webster and Ike Diogu

Wow. Bunch of bandwagon jumpers. It is the easy way to just say the Hawks are not a ‘good’ team and should never lose by 30+ in two games, but instead analyze why it is they have lost that badly and make the necessary adjustments……….
The fact is the Hawks have the 4th best record in the East, while accumulating more road wins than any team AND dealing with probably as many injuries, which leads me to my point-In those two blowouts to the Hornets and more recently the 76′ers, Al Horford was not in uniform.
Say what you want about his size and playing out of position or what not, but he and Josh make a formidable duo down low. Aside from Twin(who does not get enough credit for his play this year), Al is our best low post defender. He and Josh are so athletic, great rebounders and shot blockers that they can mask the poor perimeter defense we have at the top of the key.
Now, take away Al(or Smoove) and not only are we poor defensively around the perimeter but also inside!!!!!!!!!!
Combine this, with poor shooting and no dribble penetration and you have the makings of a blowout. Exhibit A-Hornets and Exhibit B-76′ers. I am a big fan of Larry Drew and have confidence he will get this turned around. Lets remember, this is nothing new for the Hawks. Inconsistency has defined them for years. I do not think in most cases it was because of a lack of effort, but because we rely so much on the jump shot. I honestly believe Josh Smith would be putting up Blake Griffin highlights if we had a point Guard like Steve Nash who can penetrate and set up his teammates-Exhibit A- Amare Stoudamire. That is not a knock on Bibby, he can still be effective but I do not think he is a starting point guard anymore.
This is the difference between this year and years past-I believe LD will make the necessary adjustments to get things back on track. In my opinion, you have several options:
1. Start Teague over Bibby for defensive purposes and bring Jamal in like you normally would half through the 1st quarter. Bibby would come in at the end of the first for Joe and not have to defend the starters while complimenting Jamal with his 3 point shot.
2. Move Joe to SF and start Mo at 2 for perimeter defense.
3. Start Zaza/Twin depending on the match up and play big to force mismatches on both ends of the floor.
4. Trade for Steve Nash. While his defense may not be much better than Bibby’s, his dribble penetration and facilitating will make our offense more consistent to keep us competitive in games.
Preferably, the first change would be best but the theme here is defense. Something has to permanently be done to help defensively and I have confidence LD will get the job done.

This is the article superiorblogman alluded to. From Jeff Schultz (some good comments);
“I’ve been begging [general manager] Rick Sund and the Hawks for the last three years – please get a center so my son can pay his normal position,” the elder Horford said Tuesday from his home in the Dominican Republic. “He can’t push guys out of the box like I could. If he moved to forward, he would have a longer career.”
How good would he be as a power forward? “He’d be a beast,” coach Larry Drew said.
How long can he hold up like this?
Horford said, “I don’t see myself playing center the rest of my career.” “My dad was built for this,” he said. “It takes a toll on your body when you’re going against guys that outweigh you by 50, 60 pounds every night and have three, four inches on you.
“I feel pretty good now. But I wonder how I’ll feel a couple of years from now.”
Then came this novel idea: “I like playing against guys my own size.”.
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/02/08/al-horford-an-all-star-at-center-but-hes-taking-a-beating/?cxntfid=blogs_jeff_schultz_blog/
Al wants to play PF full time, his dad wants him to play PF full time, his coach thinks he would be a beast at PF.
So at what point does Rick and LD either 1) Make Josh the full time SF or 2) Trade Josh for a starting Center

Teague to point so we have quickness and a penetrator on the floor to kick out to the shooters (and we do have shooters). Bibby on bench puts one of the best 3 point shooters and clutch shooters makes bench deeper with Jamal already there. alternate Twin and ZaZa at 5 move Al to four and Josh to three to have Marvin come off bench for rest of season. we’d have the deepest bench in the NBA, the best young power forward in the league playing his true position and a double double defense force in Smith overpowering people at the three. then you have JJ doing JJ and they will be straight. next season, they get a starting big somehow and they will be good for years. they are in the 4th spot still and if Drew can beat some sense into them to start games like it means something, could catch Chicago or even Miami if they keep slipping. it aint over yet.

KevinM – I understand your point about Al, but I still say good teams fight through almost any injury. Look at the Celts and the Blazers. A 34 point beating by the Sixers at Home? Naah. I say we still don’t come close in that game, even with Al. Jrue and Lou are to good for Bibby, and Meeks with Iggy can do a credible job on JJ and Jamal. It was pitiful, plain and simple.
The Sixers out rebounded us 50-35 – that’s hustle.
The Sixers only shot 23.1% from 3 point range – so it wasn’t lucky shooting.
We’ve beat other teams with Al out – Charlotte and @ Washington.

the mentality of this team is not championship caliber. There is a not so obvious cancer on the team…play together for a while, then they lay down.Get jumped on for an early deficit, lay down. Fair weather fans? no way. have followed them since the seventies. Just tired of watching them play like they are could give a rat’s ass. down by alot at halftime, oh well, let’s just play it out and go get them next time. Really unsure where the blame is except to say these guys are getting paid alot of money to be professionals. About the only professional i see is out with a back injury right now, Mr.Al Horford. nobody else seems to care at all, including coach drew. I hope he did blast these guys. They will be gone in the first round of the playoffs this year. If horford is lucky, he will get traded to a team with some heart.

The thing that concerns me about Bibby the most, is that he’s falling apart when he’s had the most rest. Bibby hasn’t played more than 26 minutes in the last 5 games, and he’s still only shooting less than 24% from the floor in those 5 games. Come late March, what’s Bibby gonna look like?

Scoop, I don’t care that Al was missing. Joe and Josh could be missing also but NO WAY do you lose at home to th 76ers by 30. That is unacceptable for any pro team. Teague, Wilkins, Williams, Powell, Twin could have started and still not lose by that much. No excuse. I will say Joe had his career worse day 6 pts, 4 fouls 5 to’s.

ag the marvin williams draft pick was horrible. we took a guy who did not start had not shown a consistent jump shot, the inability to handle the ball as a wingman in the league and on top of that nnot physical enough to bang in the paint. tell me this fellow bloggers who else has taken someone with the 2 pick, who did not have a permanent position. i would never draft a guy second overall your not sure what position he will play. especially when point guard was your glaring weakness deron williams had the body and the stats chris paul had the stats and the floor savy then. they both just had to be more consistent with there jump shot. all williams had was that key atlanta hawk word again. . .,. , POTENTIAL!

Switched to the game last night after having honey do duty. My reward was seeing them down 57-29 with 2 minutes left in the half. Down by 1 point less than they scored. After a performance like this the radio talk shows should be all over them but the lead stories – as always – concern the effing Dawgs. So if the Sports talk radio programmers don’t hold them accountable and remember 680 is the “flagship” station for the Hawks and Thrashers – why should ownership care. The only way anything gets done is when no one shows up. How about a fan outage for a meaningful game. No one in the stands. Think ASG might get the picture? I can’t find a single reason to get excited about this years team. Just when they build some cache and momentum they drop a stink bomb on us like last night. It’s like they took a dump on us with our permission. For now all I can say is WHO CARES? Not me, that’s for sure.

Quick new blog from MC . . . really bringing the heat now. Good job man.
The New Orleans beatdown didn’t bother me that much, because Horford was out and the Hornets were rolling people back then. LOL . . but you can’t get beat down by the Sixers, even without Horford. They’re the (( bleepin )) Sixers, not the Celtics.
But like I, and a few other people were saying last night, this is a PERSONNEL issue more than anything else. There are obvious other issues at play, but it’s the personnel that’s the problem.
The front office flat out failed this summer when they had the chance to add better pieces to the puzzle . . from a new coach to new players.
When you basically do the bare minimum across the board, outside of re-signing JJ, and you knew the team lacked quality players, the front office has to take a lot of the blame for the beatdowns.
I just wonder how losses like these would sit with Avery Johnson? That’s not saying that Drew isn’t pizzed or is/isn’t part of the reason for these beatdowns. I just wonder if Avery wouldn’t have dropped a nuclear bomb and SPECIFICALLY called out people for their poor effort?
The Hawks ( as a team ) hasn’t reached that tipping point yet in which they get pizzed off at not playing like a top 10 team. They still believe that ( at full strength ) they can just turn it on and be “OK”.
I think the guys know that they aren’t “elite”, so that’s why extremely poor efforts don’t bother them that much.

Listening to The Heard on 680 The Fan – CNN:
Melo is the black hole. A high volume scorer, shooting 47%, he scores 51 points w/no assists. If he gets 3 assists the win that game that they lost 108 – 103. Melo plays no D either. In NY, who will Melo and Amare stop? NO ONE!

I wonder if the (spirit) are afraid of trade talks, or just afraid of getting rejected… I would offer , all but joe, josh, and al and say u can have anybody 5 people on our roster for carmelo Anthony !!!
They probably will pick Jeff teague, Marvin , jc2, jc1, and zaza … but its worth doing… even if u lose money… at least make the offer to show your fans that you are trying…. even if you know u gon get turned down…
Pretend … at least fake it!!! To sit and do nothing only shows that you don’t care, close mouths don’t get fed….
Heat wanted another championship, what they do, get lebron and bosh.. bulls. Wants one, what they do, get Carlos boozer, after going after lebron, wade, and bosh… Orlando wants one, what they do, traded three starters for people they think can win it..
lakers got. multiple titles, they slip one little bit, they got the single greatest player in the world, and u see them in huge trade talks to get meLo!!!!
What did the hawks do, resign the same players , couldn’t even resign banal Crawford , got a worst record so far then last year, and yet feel like everything is ok… it doesn’t take a genius to realize something needs to change!!!!
ASAP!!!!
At least go after Danny granger, hasheem thabeat, idulguala, Lou Williams , billups, Kevin love , pau gasul, or somebody!!!! So what if you might not get them.. show the fans you care, show the team that some changes will be made if somebody don’t step up, and anybody on the team that’s not getting playing time or on the bench is tradable!!!

That’s part of the problem though. No one really cares about the Hawks like that, outside of a few thousand die hard fans. That’s part of the reason why management doesn’t go “all out” to acquire better players and do a little more.
They’ll say that we have the 8th highest payroll in the NBA, but our attendance is still way below what other playoff teams draw. So why should we go “all out”, when the city doesn’t care whether we win or lose?
People may not like to see that, but I believe that’s exactly what ownership is thinking. The ASG expects Atlanta to support a “good” product, and it’s not happening. Atlanta wants a championship caliber product before they go out and support them on a nightly basis. Ownership isn’t willing to do all of that. So it is what it is.
Even with this blog, you really can’t judge if you have all of these people who are really upset, or if you just have a few people on here posting under multiple names, showing their “outrage”. You probably have a few people who are mad at the Hawks right now, but haven’t been to a game in 2 – 3 years. So the ASG isn’t going to take the opinions of those fans seriously.
No long standing traditon of winning for the Hawks, combined with people who could care less one way or the other about them, also brings about the non-reaction from the media outlets.
No one expects this team to really do anything, so I guess the radio, TV, and print outlets are like . . “why even spend a lot of time talking about them”?
Schult and Bradley will probably rip them in their sophomoric style. But at least MC addressed some of the right issues when he’s critical of the team.

I know Cheeseburger doesn’t let these blowouts bother him…did you see he and Al having a good laugh on the bench in the 4th quarter? Come to think of it, I bet no one lets a game like last night even bother them…why? Because there are 81 more to worry about. They truly don’t feel the pain, or the boos. They shrug them off, go to their PDA and check their back accounts….then they feel better.

I think fair value for Nash, considering he’s 35 years old(but in better shape then most 25 year olds) would be Jamal and Mo’s expiring contracts, Zaza, and a first rounder.
Not sure if salaries match up, but they get cap space a center with still some upside at affordable contract and a first round pick to build with.
The downside to the trade for us is we are going all out. It would be championship or bust as we would have to more room to manuever but I definitely think it would be worth the risk.

People stop hating on Josh he isn’t the problem. The problem is the owners and GM. The owners don’t want to spend any money to be better and the GM is even worse. Every NBA fan or analyst knew for 2 years hawks have no PG or inside toughness. This franchise is a joke. This team has 3 all star caliber players and the NBA’s best 6th man. Any other team would add the right pieces around them but this ownership just doesn’t give a crap. Sund hasn’t made one trade since he got Crawford handed to him on silver platter. And I dont give credit for Sund for that one GS was looking to dump him and he fell on our laps. The Hawks had the lowest payroll out of all 16 playoff teams last year that says it all. Then although I don’t blame him for all our problems LD should have never been hired. They needed a new experienced voice and they also needed to add a couple of pieces (role players). As this season unfolds you can clearly see Bibby is completely finished he can’t do anything but hit open shots and even those aren’t going in lately. There has to be a deal out there that can help us without trading our top 3 players. All other teams find a way to do it we just got bad owners and a terrible GM that is why we have these problems. What happened on draft night when the Hawks sold their 2nd rd pick and the owner claimed that money will be used to pay for luxury tax if they go over it which was never really a thought it was to pay a small portion of the contract Joe fleeced them for. You trade Josh and they will have even bigger problems in interior defense. The idea is to put right pieces around your core not guys like Mo Evans, D. Wilkens, Jason Collins ETC.
Doug

I have been more supportive of Sund than most but…this has reached an obvious point where something must be done. When you are bounced from the playoffs in an embarrassing and non-competitive fashion and THEN have such inexpicable meltdowns AT HOME the following year you simply have to do something. What that something is is the question…but it seems that it would have to involve the expiring contract of JC. Who wants Marvin and Bibby?? JJ is untradeable…Horford is rightfully almost untouchable and Josh…well…he might be the only other tradeable piece that could change the face of this team appreciably. Good luck with interior defense if he goes though

I am a Hawk fan that lives in NYC (dont ask me how that happened) lol. But seriously even on the radio here on WFAN the announcers say no one takes the Hawks serious cause there ownership is terrible and they have a half empty arena on most nights. And yesterday they had a good basketball show duirng the afternoon and they had a few different analysts that all said the Hawks should be pursuing a Carmelo rental to go for it this year. The Knicks are offering garbage Chandlker, Curry and a 1st. The Hawks can top that easily if they wanted to. Marvin, Crawford and a 1 would be alot better. Even if Carmelo wouldnt sign with us we would free ourselves or Marvin’s burdersome contract aft er the year. And who knwos maybe he would I know I much rather player with Joe,Josh and al than just playing with Amare.

Mojo, the Hawks have not had a point guard since Mookie left town. They did experiment with J. Terry, but the Royal Ivey’s, Anthony Johnson’s and Speedy Claxton’s have been the norm around here. And trading for Biedrins would be the worst move in Hawks history. What the fascination with that guy is, I do not see. He’s not good offensively and vastly overrated defensively. Hawks fans would hate that dude after 5 games.
Steph Curry is a baller. He’d be an instant offensive upgrade to the team. Golden St, in my opinion, would be crazy to trade him right now. They should at least wait a few years, in which they could execute a sign and trade and get more for him. Plus, Monta would be the guy I’d trade anyway.
I still say the mistake this team made, was not trading for Andre Miller, and instead trading for Jamal. Jamal has been great for us . . far better than I expected. But he’s not the PG that we needed. The PG that could’ve made some of our main guys even better, while being able to defend the position.
The other mistake was not acquiring Shaq, even if we had to give up on Marvin and overpay for Shaq. Even if Shaq would’ve been available for 50 – 55 games during the season, that would’ve given us the big body to put in the middle, and allowed Horford to be “a beast” ( as Drew said he’d be if he played PF full time. )
This team has to play defense and make shots on a nightly basis. We’re not equipped to pound it inside or have the players to constantly drive the ball ( mainly because they’d all rather shoot jumpers ).
Lose Horford and Smith for any length of time, and this team can’t overcome their loss in the frontcourt, unless the guards and Marvin really have good games. Our backup bigs are simply that sorry.

Mojo, cosign with the rental of Carmillo. The stands would be full and the Nuggets will get another young playerwith upside? (Marvin), expiring contract in Jamal and a #1 pick. They will continue to win, but those other trades appear to be a disaster about to happen. If he leaves, it gives us more room under the cap because we don’t have Marvins contract. The Hawks need some upgrades, their big men are Collins, Thomas, Powell, and Zaza, who has taken a step backwards. Don’t know if it’s the lack of playing time or what, but he’s not the same player he was 2 years ago.

I just dont get as an owner how you can just settle for being mediocre and having a half empty arena every night. The shaq signing was such a no brainer for them and they couldnt see that. Even knwo hes injury prone these days he would of given them toughness and a true leader who is a winner in that locker room which is needed as well as selling many tickets and making them alot of money is made so much sense for them in many ways and they still didnt see it or they did and are just to stupid to think its the right move. If they got a Melo rental the arena would be sold out every night. and no you cant trade Josh smith for a Melo rental. If he signed an extension with us thats another story but that isnt happening.

Have you watched the Hawks the last 5 years? northcyde,
I think not signing Shaq was a big miss by the ASG. And I think they could have gotten Shaq w/o giving up Marvin. We could have given Shaq the full Mid-Level (almost $5+ mil), and promised him some starts and consistent PT. But they didnt.
I think its because they were afraid he would rock the boat. So now when Al is out, we are stuck with ZaZa/Collins/Etan.
I also think one of the reasons why they hired LD is because he would not rock the boat. Last year, he was a go-between with Woody and the players, so they knew he would be happy with the players on the team.
And he gets paid probably the lowest salary in the NBA, so i think LD is just happy to be a HC.

I don’t know how the Hawks are 4th in the conference….they have way too many embarrassing losses; NO & PHI, Boston & Bucks at home, Bucks collapse on the road, collapses against Suns and Mavs at home.
This team really could be the best team in the NBA but they just don’t get it. Effort is the key. Look at the Celtics…so many injuries yet they all play the same way. There’s no holes on defense…there’s no excuses.
“I don’t care how many injuries we have, when we step on the court we expect to win” Paul Pierce
and I think that’s the Hawks problem….they hope to win…they think they can win….but they don’t EXPECT to win at least not as a collective team.
With that said…they don’t have the talent on the bench to get anything significant done. Marvin may not like it…but he needs to come off the bench….not because of talent but because we need an extra punch off the bench.

Drew needs to forget the offense….the offense will come…it’s the defense that’s alarmingly (Doug Gottlieb voice) ineffective and inefficient. It’s awful. It’s unacceptable. It’s bull$hit. If Eddie House and Carlos Arroyo can d up then why can’t Bibby or Jamal??? I’d rather Bibby go underneath a screen and see if his man can consistently shoot threes off the dribble…not many have that ability.
