Last night on Twitter during the game and in the post-game blog I mentioned that good teams just don’t take home beatdowns on the regular like the Hawks.
Shoot, remember a few days ago when Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak was talking about shaking up his roster?. That was after the Lakers took a 16-point home loss . . . to the Celtics:
“I try to be as objective as possible, but I’m concerned that our performance is not living up to our talent level,” Kupchak said at the time. “Our record is certainly OK. But we’ve lost a bunch of home games. We’ve lost a couple of big games at home. And to me, those are red flags.”
The red flags are waving for the Hawks after yet another white-flag surrender at Philips. Elias Sports Bureau provides the dirty details (second item, though let the “crowning achievement” in the lead headline serve as a bitterly sarcastic taunt of the Hawks):
There have been three games this season in which the home team lost by at least 30 points, and the Atlanta Hawks have been on the short end of the scoreboard in two of those games.
The Hawks’ 34-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday (117-83) is the second-worst home defeat in the NBA this season, trailing only the 41-point defeat Atlanta had against the New Orleans Hornets on Jan. 21 (100-59). The only other team to lose a home game by at least 30 points this season is the Charlotte Bobcats, 93-62 to the Boston Celtics on Dec. 11. . . .
At 33-19, Atlanta has the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Should the Hawks finish the season at least 10 games above .500, the Elias Sports Bureau says they would join one other such team in NBA history to lose two home games by at least 30 points. The 1969-70 Baltimore Bullets had 30-point home losses to the Suns and Knicks, yet finished the season 50-32.
Remember, too, there could be another couple historically ugly Ls for the Hawks if not for circumstance and NBA decorum.
The Bucks called off the dogs after they took a 29-point lead into the fourth quarter. They were up by 26 with 7:51 to play when a JC2-led run in garbage time prevented another possible 30-point L. Instead, the final losing margin was a normal-looking 108-91.
The Celtics were up 85-56 near the end of the third quarter when KG and Co. took a seat. Boston led by 31 with 4:31 to play (97-66) and by 29 with 3:31 to go (99-70). Twin and Josh Powell scored for the Hawks and the Celtics failed to score on their last eight possessions. So Atlanta fell 99-76, still ugly but not outrageously so.
As it stands, the Hawks have four double-digit losses at home, all by at least 17 points. The three teams above them in the standings have just two such losses combined among their 13 home Ls: Miami’s 93-77 defeat to Indiana and Chicago’s 107-78 loss to Orlando. And those games were back on Nov. 22 and Dec. 1, respectively, while two of the Hawks’ shellackings have come in the last 18 days. Even Orlando, which has its own issues at home, has just two double-digit Ls there: 104-94 vs. Utah on Nov. 10 and 123-101 to San Antonio on Dec. 23.
So the next time the Hawks say something along the lines of “These things happen” (and we know they will), the retort should be: “No, they don’t. Not to ‘good’ teams.”

and come on mike bibby’s prime past him during bush jr. first term. that was a terrible deal. he does not fit our system he has to play with a team that has a big man that commands a double team. we have a young guard that sits the bench that has a enormous talent but we wont play him because we just have to solidify that 4th or 5th seed. Bibby has never been a very talented guy! he has always been a spot up shooter that plays no defense.

Hawks scouting report:
On offense, break down the Point. The Hawks can’t guard the point.
Pound it inside. The Hawks have no inside prescence.
On Defense:
Guard Joe tight, with fresh, young athletes.
Do the same with Jamal.
Sag off Bibby for help.
Put a big body on Al
Force Josh and Marvin to beat you shooting J’s
Think NBA scouts have got the memo yet?

The guy doesn’t use a computer or knows what the internet is…he also never watches college basketball….
Now if Gearon would get off his fantasy wallet, he would get us some players in here who have some leadership.
I’ll take it easy on Larry Drew I…he took the blame for last night, and our guys simply are too stubborn to take on any of the responsibliity. Have you heard a player apologize for their performance or lack of?
The only 2 guys other teams have mentioned as interested on our roster:
Teague and JC1.

We are a young atheltic ball club that needs to be running teams up and down the court with our atheletes. but instead our non most athletic player happens to be our point guard. you can match our starting five up against any team in the nba when it comes to just straight up athlethism and we would hold our own except the point guard spot. i am not saying bibby is garbage but he does not and has never fit our system

Let me give you all some NUMBERS:
We were a WEAK team for over 5 years before we started this WINNING tradition.
ELITE teams are those that end up in the Final 8 in the NBA. That means making the 2nd round makes us elite.
We have ALREADY BEATEN THE HEAT AND MAGIC THIS YEAR. These two teams consist of players who have been to the NBA FInals. Therefore, we are Finals Caliber.
Mike Bibby is in his PRIME
Joe Johnson is BETTER than Kobe Bryant
Jeff Teague has ISIAH THOMAS-LIKE POTENTIAL
Marvin is BETTER than Jamison was in his prime
Josh Smith is MORE ATHLETIC THAN DWIGHT AND IS THE CLOSEST THING IN THIS LEAGUE TO LEBRON

OB, now you know you are wasting your time….you already know what Sund is going to say? You don’t need to hear it anymore from him.
Gearon might possibly slip and say something, but I don’t think it will be anything to improve the core/team.
SteveW, Al is the only player we will struggle to win without. Smoove is 2nd. You can have leader Joe go out, you can have Marvin come up with another ailment, you can even have JC1 sulk if he wants. We can still win some games in this league. The one question I have is how would we do with Bibster unable to go? Insert joke here……
Get me Nene to pair him up with Al and we will have something very formidable. I like him almost as much as grabbing Billups. Problem is we don’t have enough resources to offer other than future #1s.
If Denver got a commitment from Melo, that team could do some damage and challenge the Lakers….I feel sorry for the fans in Denver, who are stuck to just watch their opportunties wither.
I wonder who is showing more frustration, Denver or us?

Here is what the Sporting News ranks as the team most in need of getting a trade to improve…
1. Atlanta Hawks
Needs: Point guard, center.
Deal to be made: Atlanta sends F Josh Smith, PG Mike Bibby, C Zaza Pachulia and C Jason Collins to Golden State for PG Stephen Curry, C Andris Biedrins, C Dan Gadzuric and G Charlie Bell.
Outlook: Most executives around the league aren’t expecting any major moves from Atlanta, but the fact is, the Hawks are a very good team that doesn’t quite have the pieces to break through to the next tier. So they should go for the shakeup.
Curry has shown he can be a point guard, and though his defense is lacking, he will help the Hawks offense run much more smoothly. Biedrins has struggled, but is a talented defensive-and-rebounding center, and acquiring him allows Al Horford to move to power forward, which will make Horford a better player. They’ll miss Smith, of course, but this deal allows the Hawks to put out a more traditional lineup.
Though the Warriors really like Curry, there is still the question of whether he is a long-term fit with Monta Ellis. Getting Smith to play small forward with David Lee at power forward seems ideal for an up-tempo team, and Dorell Wright can move to a sixth-man role, which is perfect for him.
Orlando, Dallas and Utah fall in line behind the Hawks in the need to make a move. I think TSN overvalues the Hawks’ pieces in that trade.

We are VERY much like the Spurs last year in that we both got swept in the 2nd round and we both have not made major moves since then. We feel this CORE has ELITE potential. Wait, we already are ELITE. We have beaten the Lakers at least once the last 3 years. They are the TWO TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS since 2009.

Tryin to get by, tryin to get by…
This is what happens when u just tryin to get by…ASG did nothing to improve this squad and Thank God it’s imploding at home right in front of their faces and everybody else’s. As long as they could continue to squeak out wins, ASG was satisfied. They could tow the line and hold out for playoff and luxury tax disbursements. Afterall, an ugly win is still a win. But Now?
Getting booed off your homecourt, twice in two weeks, in front of a reasonable crowd is unsettling. The first could be considered an aberration to the average fan, but die-hard know and have known for quite some time, that this team isn’t that good. Now, it appears they aren’t good at all. Especially without Horford; wasn’t he missing against the Hornets as well?
The players have openly bitched about the home crowd routing for the other team. JJ has repeatedly said he “doesn’t care about the fans” and ASG rewards him with $120M dollars. Now, those dollars have come home to roost.
The fans won’t continue to pay good money after bad for this entertainment product. Luckily, some real stars are coming to town and unless major changes are made soon, we will get more of last night.
Bottom line is as LD says, the Hawks are soft. And not only soft, imbalanced and lacking complete skill sets. The one player, with a near complete set, Horford, misses a game and they lose by 30.
Where’s the leadership? JJ gets $120M, scores 6pts and we get blown by 30? So, what’s going to happen come playoff time? Playoffs, what playoffs… they don’t deserve to go to the playoffs, they are too embarrassing.
It’s time to spit the bit, the future is now. Horford is the centerpiece. Decide which other two/three to keep and starting setting the table for next year. This is a wrap!

Its Not A Bad Pick is certainly Marvin himself or his brother. Anyway tell him he is playing better but I think he (you) should come off the bench. Also, if it was not “a bad pick” lets call NO or Utah and make a straight up deal for the people drafted after Williams and see if they would do it. Actually out of the top 10, only I would only chose Williams over Martell Webster and Ike Diogu

Wow. Bunch of bandwagon jumpers. It is the easy way to just say the Hawks are not a ‘good’ team and should never lose by 30+ in two games, but instead analyze why it is they have lost that badly and make the necessary adjustments……….
The fact is the Hawks have the 4th best record in the East, while accumulating more road wins than any team AND dealing with probably as many injuries, which leads me to my point-In those two blowouts to the Hornets and more recently the 76′ers, Al Horford was not in uniform.
Say what you want about his size and playing out of position or what not, but he and Josh make a formidable duo down low. Aside from Twin(who does not get enough credit for his play this year), Al is our best low post defender. He and Josh are so athletic, great rebounders and shot blockers that they can mask the poor perimeter defense we have at the top of the key.
Now, take away Al(or Smoove) and not only are we poor defensively around the perimeter but also inside!!!!!!!!!!
Combine this, with poor shooting and no dribble penetration and you have the makings of a blowout. Exhibit A-Hornets and Exhibit B-76′ers. I am a big fan of Larry Drew and have confidence he will get this turned around. Lets remember, this is nothing new for the Hawks. Inconsistency has defined them for years. I do not think in most cases it was because of a lack of effort, but because we rely so much on the jump shot. I honestly believe Josh Smith would be putting up Blake Griffin highlights if we had a point Guard like Steve Nash who can penetrate and set up his teammates-Exhibit A- Amare Stoudamire. That is not a knock on Bibby, he can still be effective but I do not think he is a starting point guard anymore.
This is the difference between this year and years past-I believe LD will make the necessary adjustments to get things back on track. In my opinion, you have several options:
1. Start Teague over Bibby for defensive purposes and bring Jamal in like you normally would half through the 1st quarter. Bibby would come in at the end of the first for Joe and not have to defend the starters while complimenting Jamal with his 3 point shot.
2. Move Joe to SF and start Mo at 2 for perimeter defense.
3. Start Zaza/Twin depending on the match up and play big to force mismatches on both ends of the floor.
4. Trade for Steve Nash. While his defense may not be much better than Bibby’s, his dribble penetration and facilitating will make our offense more consistent to keep us competitive in games.
Preferably, the first change would be best but the theme here is defense. Something has to permanently be done to help defensively and I have confidence LD will get the job done.

This is the article superiorblogman alluded to. From Jeff Schultz (some good comments);
“I’ve been begging [general manager] Rick Sund and the Hawks for the last three years – please get a center so my son can pay his normal position,” the elder Horford said Tuesday from his home in the Dominican Republic. “He can’t push guys out of the box like I could. If he moved to forward, he would have a longer career.”
How good would he be as a power forward? “He’d be a beast,” coach Larry Drew said.
How long can he hold up like this?
Horford said, “I don’t see myself playing center the rest of my career.” “My dad was built for this,” he said. “It takes a toll on your body when you’re going against guys that outweigh you by 50, 60 pounds every night and have three, four inches on you.
“I feel pretty good now. But I wonder how I’ll feel a couple of years from now.”
Then came this novel idea: “I like playing against guys my own size.”.
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/02/08/al-horford-an-all-star-at-center-but-hes-taking-a-beating/?cxntfid=blogs_jeff_schultz_blog/
Al wants to play PF full time, his dad wants him to play PF full time, his coach thinks he would be a beast at PF.
So at what point does Rick and LD either 1) Make Josh the full time SF or 2) Trade Josh for a starting Center

Teague to point so we have quickness and a penetrator on the floor to kick out to the shooters (and we do have shooters). Bibby on bench puts one of the best 3 point shooters and clutch shooters makes bench deeper with Jamal already there. alternate Twin and ZaZa at 5 move Al to four and Josh to three to have Marvin come off bench for rest of season. we’d have the deepest bench in the NBA, the best young power forward in the league playing his true position and a double double defense force in Smith overpowering people at the three. then you have JJ doing JJ and they will be straight. next season, they get a starting big somehow and they will be good for years. they are in the 4th spot still and if Drew can beat some sense into them to start games like it means something, could catch Chicago or even Miami if they keep slipping. it aint over yet.

KevinM – I understand your point about Al, but I still say good teams fight through almost any injury. Look at the Celts and the Blazers. A 34 point beating by the Sixers at Home? Naah. I say we still don’t come close in that game, even with Al. Jrue and Lou are to good for Bibby, and Meeks with Iggy can do a credible job on JJ and Jamal. It was pitiful, plain and simple.
The Sixers out rebounded us 50-35 – that’s hustle.
The Sixers only shot 23.1% from 3 point range – so it wasn’t lucky shooting.
We’ve beat other teams with Al out – Charlotte and @ Washington.

the mentality of this team is not championship caliber. There is a not so obvious cancer on the team…play together for a while, then they lay down.Get jumped on for an early deficit, lay down. Fair weather fans? no way. have followed them since the seventies. Just tired of watching them play like they are could give a rat’s ass. down by alot at halftime, oh well, let’s just play it out and go get them next time. Really unsure where the blame is except to say these guys are getting paid alot of money to be professionals. About the only professional i see is out with a back injury right now, Mr.Al Horford. nobody else seems to care at all, including coach drew. I hope he did blast these guys. They will be gone in the first round of the playoffs this year. If horford is lucky, he will get traded to a team with some heart.

The thing that concerns me about Bibby the most, is that he’s falling apart when he’s had the most rest. Bibby hasn’t played more than 26 minutes in the last 5 games, and he’s still only shooting less than 24% from the floor in those 5 games. Come late March, what’s Bibby gonna look like?

Switched to the game last night after having honey do duty. My reward was seeing them down 57-29 with 2 minutes left in the half. Down by 1 point less than they scored. After a performance like this the radio talk shows should be all over them but the lead stories – as always – concern the effing Dawgs. So if the Sports talk radio programmers don’t hold them accountable and remember 680 is the “flagship” station for the Hawks and Thrashers – why should ownership care. The only way anything gets done is when no one shows up. How about a fan outage for a meaningful game. No one in the stands. Think ASG might get the picture? I can’t find a single reason to get excited about this years team. Just when they build some cache and momentum they drop a stink bomb on us like last night. Quick new blog from MC . . . really bringing the heat now. Good job man.
The New Orleans beatdown didn’t bother me that much, because Horford was out and the Hornets were rolling people back then. LOL . . but you can’t get beat down by the Sixers, even without Horford. They’re the (( bleepin )) Sixers, not the Celtics.
But like I, and a few other people were saying last night, this is a PERSONNEL issue more than anything else. There are obvious other issues at play, but it’s the personnel that’s the problem.
The front office flat out failed this summer when they had the chance to add better pieces to the puzzle . . from a new coach to new players.
When you basically do the bare minimum across the board, outside of re-signing JJ, and you knew the team lacked quality players, the front office has to take a lot of the blame for the beatdowns.
I just wonder how losses like these would sit with Avery Johnson? That’s not saying that Drew isn’t pizzed or is/isn’t part of the reason for these beatdowns. I just wonder if Avery wouldn’t have dropped a nuclear bomb and SPECIFICALLY called out people for their poor effort?
The Hawks ( as a team ) hasn’t reached that tipping point yet in which they get pizzed off at not playing like a top 10 team. They still believe that ( at full strength ) they can just turn it on and be “OK”.
I think the guys know that they aren’t “elite”, so that’s why extremely poor efforts don’t bother them that much.

They probably will pick Jeff teague, Marvin , jc2, jc1, and zaza … but its worth doing… even if u lose money… at least make the offer to show your fans that you are trying…. even if you know u gon get turned down…
Pretend … at least fake it!!! To sit and do nothing only shows that you don’t care, close mouths don’t get fed….
Heat wanted another championship, what they do, get lebron and bosh.. bulls. Wants one, what they do, get Carlos boozer, after going after lebron, wade, and bosh… Orlando wants one, what they do, traded three starters for people they think can win it..
lakers got. multiple titles, they slip one little bit, they got the single greatest player in the world, and u see them in huge trade talks to get meLo!!!!
What did the hawks do, resign the same players , couldn’t even resign banal Crawford , got a worst record so far then last year, and yet feel like everything is ok… it doesn’t take a genius to realize something needs to change!!!!
ASAP!!!!
At least go after Danny granger, hasheem thabeat, idulguala, Lou Williams , billups, Kevin love , pau gasul, or somebody!!!! So what if you might not get them.. show the fans you care, show the team that some changes will be made if somebody don’t step up, and anybody on the team that’s not getting playing time or on the bench is tradable!!!

That’s part of the problem though. No one really cares about the Hawks like that, outside of a few thousand die hard fans. That’s part of the reason why management doesn’t go “all out” to acquire better players and do a little more.
They’ll say that we have the 8th highest payroll in the NBA, but our attendance is still way below what other playoff teams draw. So why should we go “all out”, when the city doesn’t care whether we win or lose?
People may not like to see that, but I believe that’s exactly what ownership is thinking. The ASG expects Atlanta to support a “good” product, and it’s not happening. Atlanta wants a championship caliber product before they go out and support them on a nightly basis. Ownership isn’t willing to do all of that. So it is what it is.
Even with this blog, you really can’t judge if you have all of these people who are really upset, or if you just have a few people on here posting under multiple names, showing their “outrage”. You probably have a few people who are mad at the Hawks right now, but haven’t been to a game in 2 – 3 years. So the ASG isn’t going to take the opinions of those fans seriously.
No long standing traditon of winning for the Hawks, combined with people who could care less one way or the other about them, also brings about the non-reaction from the media outlets.
No one expects this team to really do anything, so I guess the radio, TV, and print outlets are like . . “why even spend a lot of time talking about them”?
Schult and Bradley will probably rip them in their sophomoric style. But at least MC addressed some of the right issues when he’s critical of the team.

ICECOLD, you might have something there….but LDII sounds very much like some of the guys on this team….if you aren’t starting, you start pouting….I bet Bibby starts whining big time if he can no longer keep his starting assignment.
I know Cheeseburger doesn’t let these blowouts bother him…did you see he and Al having a good laugh on the bench in the 4th quarter? Come to think of it, I bet no one lets a game like last night even bother them…why? Because there are 81 more to worry about. They truly don’t feel the pain, or the boos. They shrug them off, go to their PDA and check their back accounts….then they feel better.

I think fair value for Nash, considering he’s 35 years old(but in better shape then most 25 year olds) would be Jamal and Mo’s expiring contracts, Zaza, and a first rounder.
Not sure if salaries match up, but they get cap space a center with still some upside at affordable contract and a first round pick to build with.
The downside to the trade for us is we are going all out. It would be championship or bust as we would have to more room to manuever but I definitely think it would be worth the risk.
