Before the Hawks played the Knicks a couple weekends back, L.D. put 7-2 out there as the record to shoot for before the All-Star break. So I told him the Hawks had to win three of their next four to get it.
“We want 8-1,” he said, smiling.
This game might have looked like a gimme at one point but not anymore. For one thing, Al is sitting out another game with the bruised back. Zaza is starting in his place.
L.D. said Al ended up deciding his back was better off not taking a pounding. Plus, the Hawks don’t play again until Saturday.
“I actually gave it some thought this morning even before he made his decision,” L.D. said. “Certainly I want him out there but if there is any kind of inkling about him having any kind of discomfort or concern about [if] his back can take the pounding it just makes more sense to keep him out. He gets another four days for treatment and rest.”
So playing without their All-Star center complicates things for the Hawks. Also, don’t forget the Hawks were down 18 to Philly before rallying for a W on Dec. 3.
“I still don’t know how we won that game,” Jamal said.
In the first meeting, Philly jumped out to an 11-2 lead and the Hawks had to hold off a late rally. Al had 20 and 12 in that one.
“It seems like we are always behind when we play them,” J.J. said. “We have to come out with the mindset to get off to a good start, especially against their bigs.”
The Sixers lost to New York Sunday after bearing the Knicks on Friday. They are 6-4 in their last 10 with Ws against Denver and Utah.
“They are a very, very dangerous team because they never feel or play like they are out of the game even if they are down,” L.D. said. “They have had some very quality wins. They play hard; they keep coming. They play with a blue-collar mentality of outworking you and grinding it out. . . . You can’t look at their record, where they stand in the standings. You have got to look at who that team is, and the kind of personality they have.”
The other side
Sixers coach Doug Collins on the Hawks without Al: “He’s an All-Star center. When you come in with Pachulia off the bench he gives you such energy and toughness. I have known they have been starting Jason, so I don’t know if they will start him or come in with Paculia. It changes it a little bit; they play big a lot. They will play Hoford as a power forward, they can go with Pachulia, they can go with Josh Smith as a three. They have a lot of flexibility. With [Horford] not out there they will definitely miss him but they have a lot of big guys.”
Collins on J.J. vs. Jodie Meeks: “I don’t know that Jodie can play him. We might have to have a little cross-matching. This might be a game where I have to sub early, just because their wings are so big. This ream reminds me of Charlotte with how big the wings are and they post them up. [The Hawks] are a better shooting team, and with their 3-point shooters it makes it harder to guard the post.”

I can understand why the Hawks went with Zaza over Collins in this one, though. Hawes is a good outside shooter, and Collins probably wouldn’t feel comfortable stepping out on him.
Down the stretch, I’d rather see the Hawks go small with Marvin and Smoove at PF and C.
One foul on Smoove already. The Sixers are working hard.

With Smoove off the floor, the Hawks basically have no big presence in the game. If they are going to rally, they have to do it with perimeter D and transition opportunities of their own, and posting up Joe in the half court. I don’t get why they haven’t gone to Joe in the post more. None of these Sixers guards can guard him.

I don’t care what anyone says, this team is a lot different without Al, and against good teams they really struggle without him. Washington is not a great team on either end of the floor, so we were able to get away with playing perimeter-oriented and doing whatever we wanted to win that one, but against teams that are actually playing well, this team looks awful without Al. Maybe we would still be down in this one even if Al plays, but he makes a huge difference on both ends of the floor. I have a tough time believing we’d be down by this much or outrebounded by this much if Al was on the court. I hope he gets back soon because he’s the heart and soul of this team. He’s the team’s real leader and MVP.

Hey, on the bright side, that second quarter was an improvement for us. We lost the first quarter 33-15, but the second we only lost 32-18. That’s some progress…lol. As bad as some of the players are playing right now, I have to put some of this blame so far on L.D. Why in the world would he try to play 5 guards at once? Seriously, if you are getting outrebounded badly already, it is only going to get worse when you ask your small forward (Marvin Williams) to play center, and your undersized backup SF (Mo Evans) to play PF. Come on, Drew. Get it together. In games like this, I really don’t understand why some guys get a DNP-CD. Collins and Zaza could have helped a bit on the glass.

@O’Brien the problem with that is that LD favors shot makers. Bibby was being abused out there the first half and Teague came in and played well yet LD went right back to Bibby because it seems LD prefers offense over defense. You can’t really use this game as an accurate gauge for how the Hawks would fare against the Sixers in a series, since the Hawks are without their All-Star big man, and arguably their best player. Arguably the worst half of basketball in ATL history
Defense is non existant
JJ is a turnover machine and lifeless
Smith playing halfway decent, but not rebounding at all
Bibby looks like a YMCA point guard
Zaza looks like a middle school backup girls center
Teague is Teague, which isn’t saying much
Jordan comes in gunning like he’s
Jamal may as well be a ghost
Damien has had no defensive imact on the game whatsoever
Collins and Sy are like “might as well put us in coach”
Lack of dribble penetration and low post scoring prevents the Hawks from getting easier buckets, especially when you don’t create anything offensively in transition, by playing good defense.
And if the starters can’t significantly cut this lead down, this decifit could quickly balloon to 40 – 50 points, because of the lack of quality bench players.
JJ, Jamal, and Smith are going to have to go for 40 points in this half alone, to keep us from losing by more than 20. But the only way that will happen, is if they cut the decifit down immediately.
LOL . . what a travesty of a 1st half.

This isn’t a loss that you blame on energy, nor coaching. This is a personnel blowout! When you have Bibby and Zaza in your starting five, you’re basically playing 3 against 5 on defense, and on offense (actually 2 on 5 on offense- Marvin). The Hawks are no longer a ‘young’ team any more. All of their wings are pushing 30, aside from Marvin, who makes you hold your breathe every time he falls or ‘hustles’. In the back court, you have two players out of your main three who are streaky shooters, and lousy defenders on a good day. Then you turn to your front court, and you only have two players (Josh and Al) who would get any kind of playing time with a top 4 seed team in the playoffs. Zaza on the Heat (a center deprived team) would still be the 4th best center on THAT team, lol. On a GOOD night, the Hawks have 4 players (Joe, Al, Josh, and JC1), and a bunch of misfits. The Hawks supporting cast past the top three are worst than the Heat (who have even lower salaries on the rest of their roster). Haslem, Chalmers, Arroyo, and even Dampier would take the lunch money of our 5-13 players any night.

I want to hear the coaching staff absolutely rip this team.
I don’t want to hear “sometimes you have nights like this” because we afforded you your obligatory 2 games where that happens. This loss was a result of lack of effort, lack of focus and basically not giving a damn. This was a bull(junk) performance and they should not even be paid for this. The Hawks need to apologize to the fans and I’m dead serious. After the game in the interview and in the papers….just flat out apologize for making people sit and watch this like we are the cleveland Cavaliers or something. This team has the talent.
Al Horford needs to rip the team in the media. Joe Johnson needs to rip the team in public. I didn’t see a spark from anyone on the team and people need to be benched. I’d trot out the team on the floor right now for the next game before I run the starters again. This game was awful. You’re at home off of sufficient rest and get beat by 30 points???? To the 76ers!!?!?!?! We didn’t even make a run in this game.

Ra’Mon . . I agree.
This is a personnel loss. That’s why I posted those efficiency rankings of each Hawks player at their respective positions about a week ago. Only 3 of our players ( JJ, Horford, Smith ) rank in the top 20 at their position. Marvin and Jamal rank just outside the top 20. Bibby is ranked in the 30s at PG. And the rest of the team is ranked 55 and below at their respective position.
And while we can overcome our weakness at PG, by playing Jamal major minutes, we don’t have that luxury at center. Lose Al or Josh, and the talent level on the frontcourt drops SIGNIFICALLY.
Still doesn’t excuse getting blown out at home like this, but me and you can CLEARLY see what the main issue is.
And to be honest, it’s ALWAYS has been the main issue.

My wife thinks I’m too harsh, too negative and I need to give it a rest. I do support this team, but tonight is a perfect example of how our role players are not ready. They can’t make an impact. When we have a key player out, we tend to crumble. This isn’t the first let down with Al on the bench. Somehow everyone got the memo to take the night off, at home, again.

Fundamentals, three players can not do the job of five players no matter the size of the heart. KG in Minnesota was out matched for years, even though he was arguably the best player in the league. When your starting Center gets blocked by the opposing team’s PG on a fast break, or your starting PG have problems even keeping up with the other PG’s shadow on the perimeter, its not much you can do. Zaza and Bibby would be how much better if they tried harder or hustle more? ….. Not much. For one, I think they’re both giving it their all, and that is the larger problem. They’re giving it their all but still not able to be effective consistently. As I said that goes back to personnel.

Fundamentals, of course I wouldn’t call this a great effort or a good effort. But I wouldn’t call this not expected either. Philadelphia is one of the quickest and athletic teams in the league. Atlanta gets the label as being athletic mainly just because of Josh Smith. Marvin isn’t a super athletic. And Al is quick, but really can’t jump that impressively. Mo Evans is a great defender who the Hawks signed, and I’m still waiting for that guy to come from the press conference with Flip Murray, because I still haven’t seen the guy that was advertised.

I think we all had some sobering realizations about this team’s lack of depth tonight.
For the first quarter of the season, all I did was cry about Haha Pachulia’s inability to get a shot up in the NBA at this point in his career without getting blocked (he only had to take 1 shot today to reaffirm this)
But now, what’s really bothering me, and most of the rest of the blog, is Mike Bibby’s decline into being the most ineffective starting point guard in the NBA. He does not score. He does not get to the lane, and when he does, he’s a bad foul shooter. He does not pass well. He does not handle the ball well (hell, he can’t even make it past half-court against the press). He does not shoot a high percentage from the field. He does not play a lick of defense. He is not a leader. He is not inspired. I have never once heard him talk about wanting to win a championship before his career comes to an end. He and Joe isolate themselves from younger players.
He is not even a shadow of the player he once was.
He is still our best option at the point.

The Energy and effort wasn’t there. Too many defensive breakdowns blah blah.
First of all, defensive breakdowns and dribble penetrations start with bibby (imo). And the Sixers continually exploited that. Bigs were forced to rotate, and gave up a lot of rebounds…

Thanks Lewis. And I definitely agree with you about Bibby. Bibby wouldn’t be so terrible if he was used in a S. Cassell-Boston Celtics or G. Payton-Miami Heat type role. There’s no way to deny that Bibby and JC’s lack of defense often leads to the rest of the lineup (Josh, Al and Joe) picking up fouls that they shouldn’t have to pick up. And the trade off is what? Below 40% shooting? 3.5 assists a game? At least Nash gives you 10 assists and 50% shooting to go along with bad defense.
When you add Zaza and Bibby’s salary together, you can’t help but to get frustrated. Those two make more than the rest of the bench combined (not including Crawford).

When Mo(the guy we didn’t want to opt to stay in his contract) and ZaZa are the best off your bench (besides Jamal) theres a problem. Why waste money on so many players that don’t play, we should only have 8 guys under contract, and everyone else should be signing 10 day contracts for the rest of the year. We didnt want Shaq, We didnt want Peja, We dont want Carmelo, We dont want anyone off the Timberwolves, Cavs, or Nets, We dont know What Rick Sund wants, We all know the fans want a pg and a c or at least 1 of the 2, We want Marvin to be more consistant, We want Josh Smith to go to the hole with authority 95% of the time like Lebron because other players get scared and move out the way just as they do with Blake Griffin does Josh not see them backing up or looking scared? We want ZaZa to play hard more than just 1 out of every 13 games he said he wanted more PT but he doesn’t play like he deserves is, We want our mediocre bench if theyre going to be on the team we want to see them in the game for more than 5 minutes and not every 10 games, Why draft Sergiy Gladyr, Pape Sy, Jeff Teague, & Jordan Crawford when they wont play a lick of time, Why does Larry Drew give the same excuses???????

85Souf, are you serious? You want Josh to drive with authority 95% of the time like Lebron? Lebron is notorious for shooting too many jumpers and not driving enough. Skip Bayless owes 20% of his salary to Lebron’s jump shooting. Also, did you not hear Dominique speak tonight when talking about A. Iguodala, and saying how short careers normally are for high jumpers because they take such a beating. 82 games in a season, and if a player under 6′10 gets 4 dunks a game, that’s 328 dunks in a year. How many seasons do you see a player’s knees holding up with that high impact on their dunks? Also, as documented, Josh’s driving is limited currently with his inability to dribble with his right hand through traffic. A smart defender won’t allow Josh to drive to his left and forces him right. This leads to either a charge or a turnover.

If M. Kupchak has multiple rings as a GM, and he can come on national tv or radio and say our roster isn’t good enough, so someone’s being shipped out. Why is it that Sund feel’s he must live by his ‘old school’ rules and keep everything close to the vest? Is he scared someone may think that Bibby is washed up, if he comes out and say ‘We need another pg’? Well guess what Sund, the entire league already feels that way. This is why there are back up PGs ranked higher than Bibby.

Its clearly no coincidence that the two games we get blown out Horford isn’t around. Al may take a lot of jumpshots, but he’s still our only consistent rebounder. Not much I can say about Bibby! I don’t think the guy is finished yet as an NBA player, but right now he’s not an NBA player. When I say him get off the bench for his last run in the Wizards game, I knew he was finished. He could barely stand-up and run to the scores table. LD is really in trouble now, because he actually needs Teague to become a serviceable starting PG today, because Bibby doesn’t have any legs. Bibby might recover a little bit after the AllStar break, but he’s not going to last much longer after that. I don’t know what’s going on with Zaza, but he’s lost any ability to score in this league. Collins could have done a better job.
I can’t blame Bibby for how he’s playing, I think he’s doing the best he can but he just doesn’t have it anymore! Especially right now. Right now I think Teague should start over Bibby. At the very least Bibby needs the rest and to start playing defensive against 2nd unit guys. It would shock me if LD did it, but I don’t think he has a choice.
GO HAWKS!!

KWooden, Josh is ranked in the top 15 in the league in rebounding. I would consider that consistent. Its just hard to rebound even more when you’re out covering for your PG getting beat, or on offense when you have to get back on defense and unable to crash the offensive glass. The Hawks transition defense begins and ends with Josh, other wise he would be a 10 + rebound guy every night.

Teague is not the answer. So starting Teague is even more not the answer. If the guy can’t command the lead on the 2nd unit, no way he can do it on the first unit. The answer to pg is not on this roster! If the Hawks ran an effective zone, Joe would be the best option at PG. He ends up guarding the PG most games anyway. And the motion offense doesn’t require a PG if Sund isn’t going to get up and make a trade with the bench players.
