Hawks-Wizards game thread

Greetings, all-

Ken Sugiura sitting in for MC, who is at home celebrating his birthday. A few notes prior to Hawks-Wizards, or the basketball Super Bowl, as I like to call it.

1) Al Horford is not playing. He tested out his back after getting to the arena, but decided against it. Zaza Pachulia will go at 5, Josh Smith at 4, Marvin Williams at 3, Joe Johnson at 2, Mike Bibby at 1. He said he’ll be ready to go Tuesday for Philadelphia.

2) Larry Drew, not surprisingly, talked about the importance of containing Wizards rookie John Wall, remarking at his baseline to baseline speed. Bibby will start out on Wall, which will obviously be a bit of a test for Bibby.

3) Hawks have won 11 in a row against Washington.

4) Courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau via ESPN, Jamal Crawford’s 34-point game against the Clippers last night gave him three 30-point games off the bench for the season. No one else has more than one this season.

5) Wizards’ lineup: JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche, Rashard Lewis, Nick Young, Wall.

6) Hawks wearing red. I think they’re either 3-0 or 4-0 in red this season.

Also, Jamal had a terrible shooting night but he did have 5 assists and 3 steals. Sometimes it’s nice to have other things appear in the stat sheet.

Najeh,

I think Sam Cassell and Nick Van Exel would both take Bibby. In fact, LD might even give Bibby a run for his money

O’Brien, do you think Teague will say any ‘Your son’ jokes to LD when he gets mad about playing time?

LD- “Teague you suck and can’t shoot”
Teague-”Your son! I ruled the league your son quit in”… ?

It’s obvious Bibby needs less minutes until playoffs start, unfortunately Teague did not get to play tonight.

Also Marvin stepped up with a big game tonight and part of that was due to Al being out, but if he could at least hit his open shots like tonight I’d be very happy with his contributions.

Overall good win, would just like to see Teague get a few minutes tonight…

We shot 35 FTs tonight because we were the aggressor. That’s the kind of aggression we need all the time.

Ra’mon,

Teague is probably thinking “If LD can’t develop his son (who he has helped raise/coach from birth) into a legit NBA potential PG, then how is he supposed to help me raise my game”

The Hawks haven’t had a PG in thirteen years, it’s been so long, I guess the players and coaches stopped going by the GM’s office and looking under his desk.or, running downstairs on X-Mas morning hoping to find one under the tree.

At this point, with Bibby sitting in that fourth and Jeff getting a DNP, I guess it’s pretty clear that Jamal is the only viable option at PG. The players are like Fk-it!
We don’t need one, we can all bring the ball up.

In a way, I have heard DWade say, ” The Hawks are almost impossible to contain, because their big forwards can all initiate their offense pretty well, and in transition they put everybody on their heels. They are hard to stop when they run.”

Bibby, Evans and 3mil for Kirk Hinrich……The trade keeps the Hawks under the Lux tax for this year and next

Ramon Sessions would be a great pick-up, him coming from another team that runs the Motion Offense, it wouldn’t take him long to fit in at all, from what I know he plays Good D, and can penetrate whenever he wants. I remember he dropped 40 a few years ago, Sund should look into it.

Sammy giving JS advice says alot about how he respects the game, love it.

Atlanta Hawks select Doug Edwards – pick 15, Florida St.
Houston Rockets select Sam Cassell – pick 24, Florida St.

and they wonder why the fans don’t warm to this franchise.

I’m watching Bulls-Warriors right now, and I’m thinking the Hawks might actually benefit from bringing back the switching defense when they play Chicago. I really don’t see how the Hawks can beat them with Bibby guarding Rose the whole time. The switching defense did work against some teams last year, especially when they didn’t have weeks to prepare for it.

Also, would it have really been that hard to give Kurt Thomas the $2 million they are currently giving Powell and Etan Thomas? Kurt Thomas can still play.

none our guards will be able to stop Rose one on one. Its up to the bigs to help the helper..They seem to forget that in the playoffs.

“If Flip Saunders is the coach of the Wizards next season, he has pictures of someone in his office.”

Ditto for Sund, 31 years of mediocrity

Bibby won’t be guarding Rose . . . JJ will. Bibby will be on someone like Keith Bogans or somebody. There’s always a way to hide Bibby on the floor, unless the Hawks don’t adjust.

Can’t let the Dallas situation happen again. In that situation, you double whomever Bibby’s guarding in the post and force the other team to make a jumper . . preferably to a guy who is one of their weaker shooters.
