Hawks-Wizards game thread

Greetings, all-

Ken Sugiura sitting in for MC, who is at home celebrating his birthday. A few notes prior to Hawks-Wizards, or the basketball Super Bowl, as I like to call it.

1) Al Horford is not playing. He tested out his back after getting to the arena, but decided against it. Zaza Pachulia will go at 5, Josh Smith at 4, Marvin Williams at 3, Joe Johnson at 2, Mike Bibby at 1. He said he’ll be ready to go Tuesday for Philadelphia.

2) Larry Drew, not surprisingly, talked about the importance of containing Wizards rookie John Wall, remarking at his baseline to baseline speed. Bibby will start out on Wall, which will obviously be a bit of a test for Bibby.

3) Hawks have won 11 in a row against Washington.

4) Courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau via ESPN, Jamal Crawford’s 34-point game against the Clippers last night gave him three 30-point games off the bench for the season. No one else has more than one this season.

5) Wizards’ lineup: JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche, Rashard Lewis, Nick Young, Wall.

6) Hawks wearing red. I think they’re either 3-0 or 4-0 in red this season.

Any comment from Coach Drew on the transfer of his son from UNC in the MIDDLE of the season?

As mentioned previously, Blake Griffin committed 2 hard fouls on Marvin and Al with seconds left to play, and both men up in the air. One hard, mid-air foul I can understand. 2 means you are looking to hurt somebody. Can’t believe his coach didn’t think the foul was flagrant. And one of Blake’s teammate actually had the nerve to say Blake only did what others do to him. Get out of here. He’s lucky he wasn’t tossed. That was the nastiest fall I’ve seen in a long time. We are lucky Al is tough and will only miss one game. Had it been Marvin going down like that, his career could have been over.

Get out of here, Clippers. Hawks sweep you again this season.

Clips are getting really better, though. 3 teams I’m glad play out West: Clippers, Thunder and Hornets. Hawks always have problems with those team.

Go, Hawks! Total team effort needed tonight with Al out.

Sucks Al isn’t playing but I can’t blame him. Glad to see Zaza get a rare start.

Flip Saunders loves using zone defenses, and the Hawks showed yesterday that they still can’t consistently score against the zone. And needless to say, Bibby is going to get torched by John Wall. I think this game is once again going to be much closer than it should be.

Over/under 32 for “times John Wall blows past Bibby like he’s not even there”?

Wow, Bibby actually made a good play. Nice pick and roll. Take a picture of that and frame it.

Gotta know your personnel, Smoove. That’s a good pass if Horford is the recipient; not so much if it’s intended for Zaza.

Zaza is playing pretty well to start this game. Good D on McGee and good offensive board on Bibby’s brick. I’ll give him credit, he’s played much better over his last few games.

I’m surprised Zaza’s teammates trust him enough to pass the ball to him in transition.

arena not teeming with energy. the game isn’t either. bibby doing ok so far, but his cold shooting continues. (granted, it’s early)

And big props to LD for calling that last play for Al. Clips totally bought the fake hand off to Joe, only to see Al driving hard to the rim. Woody would have ran the iso guard to death.

Good drive and dish by Bibby…leading to good ball movement

“And big props to LD for calling that last play for Al. ”

No doubt. In an otherwise questionably coached quarter, LD came up with the perfect play call at the biggest moment of the game.

Zaza just converted an and-one. I think I see some icicles forming in hell…

Spoke too soon about the and-one (he bricked the free throw) but seriously, how often do you see Zaza finish at the rim and get fouled?

Great defense and good ball movement by the Hawks so far. Credit to Zaza, he’s played better lately and is giving the Hawks quality minutes early in this one.

The only problem I am seeing so far is too many jumpers. The ball movement is great, but jumpers have gotten us in trouble way too much lately.

at the risk of being a debby downer, how much of this has to do with washington being 25th in the league in shooting percentage?

Good first quarter all around. Good defense, good ball movement, mostly good shot selection. Two players I pick on a lot, Bibby and Zaza, mostly played well in that quarter.

“how much of this has to do with washington being 25th in the league in shooting percentage?”

Probably at least some, but the Hawks did D up well in that quarter. It’s not like the Wizards were missing open shots.

“Icicles”

I admit, Najeh … I did put that word up against my blackberry spell checker and it did pass the smell test. But, your name? Not even close!

LOL!

Unlike the Hawks’ previous game without Horford (the debacle against the Hornets) they are getting solid contributions from the other members of the front court in this game. Smoove had a dominating first quarter, and Zaza/Marvin/Collins have all played solid minutes.

bigdave

Joe seeing the double.. and getting rid of the ball.. wish we could make them pay on the back end of ball rotation. have to knock down open shots..

Najeh Davenpoop

Hawks’ defense has fallen off in the last few minutes with no Smoove on the floor. They can’t settle for jumpers on the offensive end when that happens.
