Atlanta Hawks: Marvin Williams: ‘Full responsibilty’ for role in Knicks fight, ‘no hard feelings’ for Shawne Williams

The way it looked was Hawks forward Marvin Williams mugged Knicks counterpart Shawne Williams in the back of the head, Shawne Williams bucked up, and then Marvin started swinging.

But Marvin said his outburst instead was in reaction to a culmination of unspecified actions by the Knicks.

“There was just things going on throughout the game,” Marvin said today in his first public comments since the incident. “I finally reacted, I guess. What happened has happened. I’ve obviously gotten my punishment. I accept full responsibility for what I did. Just move on from here.”

Officials ejected Marvin from the game and the NBA suspended him for two games. He sat out Saturday’s loss at Dallas and also will miss Wednesday’s game against the Raptors at Philips Arena. The league suspended Shawne Williams for a game.

The Hawks play at New York on Feb. 16. As far as Marvin is concerned, there will be no carry-over from Friday’s fight.

“It’s all good,” Marvin said. “I have no hard feelings towards Shawne. What happened, happened. I am sure when we go to New York it will be interesting. But I had no problems with him before the game and I have no problems with him today. Like I said, some things happened throughout the game and I just finally reacted.”

Hawks coach Larry Drew got caught up in the aftermath when Marvin Williams shoved his coach away as he tried to restrain him.

“That’s kind of been a joke [among the team] the last couple of days,” Marvin said. “I did apologize to him. I told him I had no idea at that time who was who, or what was what. He said it was no hard feelings. Coach has been around this a long time. He’s seen things like that before and he said he understood.”

Drew laughed off the shove from Marvin the day after the game. And today he said the Knicks fracas could be good for his team’s reputation around the league.

The Hawks have long been known as an athletic, finesse team but not particularly tough or physical. Drew said he thinks the fracas with the Knicks could help change that perception.

“I really do,” Drew said. “I don’t condone fighting in any shape, form or fashion. But I know this is a game where emotions do get high. The one thing as a team, you don’t want to be labeled a ’soft’ team. Through the course of the season, there are going to be some moments there those type things break out.

“I don’t condone fighting. But certainly you don’t want to be put into a situation where you feel things got tough and you backed away, because that will carry around the league. As a team you just don’t want that label. What happened with Marv is just an unfortunate incident and we have just got to move on from it.”

Maybe I just smoked some good ass weed without noticing and I’m seeing things. Maybe I’m a schizophrenic and I don’t realize it. But correct me if I’m wrong… did Rick Sund just compare the Hawks to the Spurs because both teams got swept in the 2nd round last year? Did Rick Sund just say Bibby is in his prime? Did Sund really just say Joe is a top 15 player in the league?

Holy sh-t, this team is screwed.

Thanks for the link lewis. Some of the good stuff from Rick Sund (from the Hoopsworld article).

If you can get 50, that’s generally home court and that can get you through the first round and you’re kind of one of the elite teams.

Chemistry is so important, and if you look at San Antonio, in some ways they’re analogous to us,” Sund explains. “They got through the first round last year and got swept in four. We got through the first round last year and got swept in four. They didn’t really make any major changes and we didn’t make any major changes.

When you’re all-pro you’re one of the top 15 players in the league.

They’re a more veteran team than us, we started the season with three starters who are 24 or younger in Horford, Josh and Marvin. Joe, Bibby and Jamal .are all in their primes, so that combination is good. But we think continuity and chemistry are important for us, just as they have been for San Antonio.”.

JJ was third team all NBA, so based on that recognition, he would be top 15.

How was that Chemistry last year? And how about the fact that the Spurs know they have the players to win a title because they have done it before. What do the Hawks know, except in the face of playoff adversity, they hang their heads.

And Bibby is in his prime? I wonder what Woody and LD would say about that…

From Marc Stein’s power rankings, Hawks are ranked 14th. Said Marc;

“Joe Johnson couldn’t be giving them more than he has in January: 26.0 ppg on 50.4 percent shooting. Who out there, though, sees the Hawks having homecourt advantage in a single round of the playoffs this time?”.

I think Rick Sund does.

Lakers may be looking to make a move before the deadline? And with a very tough week, it could look to finalize them making a trade.

Also Brandon Bass on the Magic just hurt his ankle, so I definitely think if they want any chance in the postseason they make a move before the deadline.

We can’t keep having these low-scoring 4th qtrs when we have an all-offense lineup, that doesn’t make sense. We need to make a move that involves us getting a starting quality PG that can penetrate and PLAY D, if not the Bibby/Crawford backcourt will lose us games from here until we lose in the playoffs. Bibby makes the attempt to play D, but he is unable to, Jamal plays D, but gets lazy and unmotivated, I can’t even count how many blown assignments he leaves in transition…SMH.

Let’s at least get some talks going Sund!

KevinM

Rick, the Spurs have a PG……the Hawks don’t.

Winning 50 games doesn’t make you elite…ask Utah.

Never going to the ECF doesn’t make you elite….

And how in this world does Sund think Bibby is in his prime? OMG, if he thinks that, we will never ever get a PG in here. We are in serious trouble.

And is it possible that Marvin, Josh and Al are only 24? It seems like they have been around a lot longer. Man, do they need someone to mentor them, someone to show them how to win big games.

The only comparison I make between the Spurs and Hawks is Duncan vs. Horford. This team can ill afford to lose Al for any amount of time similar to Duncan, who can step it up from time to time. I have always considered Al our Tim Duncan who could be compared to him if he got the ball more often in his sweet spots. IMO, Al should be getting 13-15 shots a game. Last week , he got 10 shots a game and that just isn’t enough involvement in the offense.
I told Grandad that losing Smoove would be no big deal and that was because we had Al to fall back on, but it should be able to bring you back some value. I don’t think I value Josh that high as I used to, because his decision making is still in question.
If it brought us Billups, you gotta make that trade. Give them Bibby or Teague too. We need a PG in the worse way. Joe needs a legit running mate.
You have to go get him the same time Anthony is dealt because Denver can’t afford to let Melo walk away without compensation. Had Cleveland known more, you know the trade winds this time last year would have been crazy to see what you could get for LeBron. Melo isn’t as valuable, but he is still a top player. But here we have Sund who continues to like this team.

He must not value consistency in any way.

KevinM

OB, give him 5 more years of playoff experience and Joe will never get a 50% FG clip in the playoffs. That’s how critical he is to the success of this team come playoff time. He has to be elite when it counts….there has to be more to this team than praying that the 25 ft Smoove jumper or the Marvin 3 pointer or the Bibby wing-it-up there shot goes in.

“If you are scoring at home, Jamal Crawford has missed his last nine shots since fist bumping the evil NY media at center court.”

“The Atlanta Hawks are officially awful…What a fake team. No heart. No guts. They’ve been outscored 21-7 in last seven minutes”

“Since Jamal Crawford fist bumped me & Berman of the Post at center court he’s missed 5 straight shots. At least someone from NY is defending”

“The Lakers officially entered crisis mode Monday, when general manager Mitch Kupchak told NBA.com that the recent poor play by the two- time defending champions may drive him to make a trade to shake up an underachieving roster. ”

Now how is it, the GM of the back to back champs can say his team need to make a trade and the GM of a team that got swept in their last two playoffs appearences (in historic fashion) can say things like “We like where we are” and “we like our core players”. Bold moves separate the Champs from the Chumps…

Speaking of the Clippers game, I got a seat that I normally pay $50 for, for just $30 on ticketmaster. Click on the Budweiser VIP ticket offer, and they have upper deck tickets for $20, Club Mezzanine level for $30, and lower level for $50.

Plus they have those $7.50 upper deck tickets.

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but don’t be surprised if you wake up in the morning, and find out that the Raptors are trapped in Indianapolis because of the snow/ice storm.

They couldn’t leave after the game because of heavy icing in Indy, and that storm is forecast to get much worse tomorrow. If they can’t get out in a few hours, they may never get out in time.

Personally, I dont care what our final regular season record will be, JUST AS LONG AS WE CAN AT LEAST MAKE IT TO THE ECF!! The Spurs could very well end up like the Cavs did a couple of season ago with 60+ wins, but if you can’t make it happen like Boston did just last season with ONLY 50 total wins and making it to the FINALS, then who cares!! I want us to LOOK LIKE A PLAYOFF team in the PLAYOFFS, not like we just dont belong!

DrMary,
I am enjoying Marvin’s macho. So, now he apologizes and that seems soft. Is if?
I’m recalled the movie “Drumline” about two Atlanta colleges doing a battle of the bands and the college kids involved in that process. In case you’ve not seen it, plot revolves around readying for the annual battle between two powerful rivals. A freshman works his way onto the team despite not being able to read music. He got into a fight with members of the other band in a tuneup to the finals and was suspended. Trying to prove himself and return to the team he did a faceoff with the bands senior leader and the senior admitted: you’re the best. But, you’re not on the team…..

Not to extend much more from this, as Marvin’s case isn’t exactly like the movie, but the movie goes to show a principle in life: If you can’t manage your emotions during crisis, the crisis will manage you. There was a better way for him to lash out: elbo to the midsection, for instance. The fight cost the Hawks 2 games of his services…two games where he won’t be here.

Hopefully, he will learn more appropriate ways of assert and defend his manhood. He’s a young guy with high character. We all know that. Even Jesus got mad…threw the money launderers out of the temple in a tirade. Did he forgive them afterwards? He forgave the soldiers who nailed him to the cross….though we don’t know about the launderers….but, I believe He did.

Marvin made a mistake, he apologized and took responsibility. That’s unmanly??? Ask Jesus.

drmaryb (*_*)

February 1st, 2011
6:58 am

Jesus never apologized for anything, he pitied his killers and forgave them, he died for them and you!

Look how much the world appreciates a loving act of mercy, kindness and forgiveness. Those adverbs don’t describe an apology, there is nothing to apologize for. The only person Marvin needs top apologize to is his Coach for pushing him inadvertently, and he did that. Maybe his teammates, but never the oppressor.

I think the wordsmithtom meant to say, “Forgiveness is close to Marvin-ness”

Get up off of your Gift!

Marvin’s gift is his big butt, next time he should just sit his butt on the back of Shawne William’s head and apply tremendous pressure.
Rick Mahorn has a similar gift, I would like to see Marvin apply his apple bottom to the low post part of his game and back his man down there, develop a back to the basket move, a jump hook or base line dunk inside the paint. He could be that go to guy down there with Horford and create some 4th Qrtr offensive options. That would really help this team in scoring droughts, he is a great FT shooter. Create his own shots and be that aggressor. We need that sorely.

Horford has a face up game in the post mainly. Fundamental basketball skill have become an endangered species in the NBA. These kids are not really students of the Naismith Game. They should really learn something else besides Dunking and Bullying and Trash Talking. The game would be a lot more entertaining to watch. Enough with all the antics – really.

This team is going nowhere as long as Drew thinks its okay to play Jamal and Bibby together at the end of games. You just don’t do that under any circumstance. Jamal or Bibby, not both. Anyone who knows anything about basketball should be able to see clearly that there aren’t enough shots to go around for Joe, Bibby and Jamal. If Joe is going to take the majority of shots regardless, why play 2 defensive liabilities alongside him? I’d honestly be fine with neither and Joe running the point. Its time for Marvin to start closing out games i’m sick of this small ball gimmick offense.

Expect Bibby to be replaced with an old, non-penetrating PG with no leadership abilities. Expect Jason Collins to go somewhere else because even he can’t tolerate coming off the bench behind Haha Pachulia. Expect Larry Drew and his useless staff to be back. Continue to expect 3 guard 2 power forward lineups in the 4th quarter.

That said, look for Hawks to make a move for a center/pg after the new CBA is negotiated
