Atlanta Hawks: Josh Smith fined $25,000 for ‘obscene gesture’

The NBA today fined Hawks forward Josh Smith $25,000 for an obscene gesture he made during Atlanta’s 111-102 victory against the Knicks on Friday.

The incident happened after Smith made a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 105-97 lead with 3:44 to play. Smith made a motion near his groin area as he ran back up the court. Television cameras captured the incident.

It’s the third act of discipline handed out by the league in relation to the game. The league suspended Hawks forward Marvin Williams for two games and Knicks forward Shawne Williams for a game after the players were involved in a fight in the final minute.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Hawks had a owner like Blank who would state that the “loss still stings”. Blank is a great owner.

Guy shouldn’t be shooting outside 3 feet. Makes a 3-pointer thinks he has “marbles.” Most irritating, overrated out-of-control player in the league.

Smoove’s was petty.

The best ever? Marshawn Lynch’s incredible run vs. the Saints. After the best run ever, mid-air crotch grab. Had he not had the ball in his right hand, I’m sure he would’ve given the Saints the finger as well.

I didn’t see the infraction, but if crotch grabbing is worth 25K, then how much will it cost for KG punching Channing Frye on his junk?

What KG did was more Lewd and Lascivious, IMHO and criminal. A Tort Crime. Assault and Battery. ROF-LOL!

Forget about this petty ish. Management needs to make a trade to get this team a big and a pg. Zaza is trash, plain and simple. Can’t jump, finish, and has hands of stone. Bibby is not a starting pg. Teague should have been the starting pg from day one. Drew should have dealt with the growing pains early. If he had, I believe Teague would be in a groove right now. The team should have drafted Toney Douglas in 2009 anyway. Stupid cheap ass front office.

I googled that qoute and it was not a NFL Coach, but was the retired Admiral Obama appointed to lead the Gulf Oil Spill – Public Relations after the BP CEO (the British guy?), lamented, “I just want to get my life back!”

After the loss of what? 8 men that died in that rig explosion and were husbands and fathers. This famous quote touched me deeply and was made on or about June 1, 2010. Sautee, have you heard this quote before?

No surprise he got fined. But imagine if he missed that 3. The score would have been 102-97, and the Knicks would have the ball.

Big shot by Josh. But as we saw in the Mavs game, the Bucks game, the Hornets game, those shots wont always go in.

I posted this on the other blog before seeing this one…

Last year, the Hawks lost 29 games. Of those 29 losses, we failed to score more than 19 points in the fourth quarter 11 times .

This season, despite the motion offense, we are struggling even more than we did last year in the fourth quarter.

Of our 18 losses this season, there have been 9 . games where we failed to score more than 19 points in the fourth.

That is unacceptable. If you cannot score in the fourth, and you cannot stop the other team from scoring, how are you supposed to win?

Ken S,

You’re right. Bibby’s averages/numbers the last 5 games have been downright horrible.

29 mpg, 5-18 from 3 (28%), 12-32 from the field (38%), 6 ppg, 2 apg, 4 rpg (and 1 FT TOTAL in 5 games).

His January numbers are not pretty either.

32 mpg, 8 ppg, 3 apg, and 3 rpg, and he only shot 39% from 3.

But look on the bright side, he has a really good assist to turnover ratio

The Marvin suspension is a blessing in disguise. I doubt we win last night with him anyway (it sucks getting swept by a team). So let’s win vs. Toronto at home and he can come back even more rested. I kinda wish his suspension was even longer so he could rest til the All Star Break. Although we know he’ll probably get hurt in a few weeks since that’s what he does.

And I think it’s something Shawne Williams said after Marvin pushed him that really pissed him off. When their lips are almost touching (no homo), Shawne says something. Maybe Shawne was annoying Marvin all game. We all know Shawne Williams is a rogue

Ken (or MC),

If you get a chance, could you ask LD about why we don’t run the motion offense more in crunch time? That seems to be when you’d MOST want to run it, since “everybody on the floor” would be a threat to score, as LD put it in the off season. Doesn’t that put more pressure on the defense than trying to guard one or two players with a favorable matchup?

But it seems that when things get tight, we revert to ISO’s all too much.

I’d love to know LD’s answer to that question. Thank you.

I must admit;
I was unable to see the game last eve.
But I would like to comment on *4th qtr woes,
-plus-
*last nights game based on the stats.
*[the two may be tied together]

(1) Bibby may be getting tired.
(2) It might be time to trade Jamal for a BIG
(3) 4 for 20 from the three point line
(4) Do we run motion or Iso in the 4th qtr.?
(5) *We have to run the offense through Al in the 4th.
* [it will make it easier on Joe]
(6) Al’s a stud
(7) Josh’s latest adolescent, puerile, boorish, silly, amateurish and rude behavior,
leads me to believe that revoking his position as Capt as a minimum or *trading him
while his value is the highest is in the Hawks best interest.
*[once again for a BIG]
(8) Why do I keep saying get a BIG? 4th qtr meltdown = need for a BIG !

(9) Trade for Steve Nash.

If they are going to fine Smoove for that, fine, but Sam Cassell did the same thing after pretty much every big shot he hit with the T-Wolves and Celtics, and I don’t remember him getting fined. Maybe like MC says it’s because SportSouth broadcast a close up TV angle.

I also think it’s funny how this otherwise invisible legion of Smoove haters pops up any time anything negative is mentioned about him to cry that he should be traded. For who? Some of you sound like you want to trade him as addition by subtraction, which is idiotic. Trade Smoove (or anyone else) if it gets you someone better. Otherwise, take the good with the bad and move on. The fact is that there are only about 50 or so players in the league, at most, who are better than him, and the number of those who would improve the Hawks and are on the trading block is even smaller.

From the previous blog:

“Nahila, the Hawks are not running out of gas. In the fourth, defenses start to tighten up, and start to overplay Joe on the perimeter. Normally when this happens the Hawks continue to shoot more bad jumpers, because they don’t consistently goto the post, and don’t have a point guard who can break down the defense (even against the zone). Its not really anything dealing with fatigue. It has more to do with playing style, lack of adjustments, and lack of personnel.”

Co-sign. This is the real reason why, as O’Brien points out, the Hawks’ 4th quarter scoring is down. Other teams tighten up, and instead of continuing with what has worked the entire game (the post game, Al’s mid range game, bringing Joe off screens) the Hawks revert to the perimeter and isolation and stop moving the ball.
