Atlanta Hawks: Josh Smith fined $25,000 for ‘obscene gesture’

The NBA today fined Hawks forward Josh Smith $25,000 for an obscene gesture he made during Atlanta’s 111-102 victory against the Knicks on Friday.

The incident happened after Smith made a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 105-97 lead with 3:44 to play. Smith made a motion near his groin area as he ran back up the court. Television cameras captured the incident.

It’s the third act of discipline handed out by the league in relation to the game. The league suspended Hawks forward Marvin Williams for two games and Knicks forward Shawne Williams for a game after the players were involved in a fight in the final minute.

What was the problem? Its not like he threw up a bird or gang sign. He just did the (Pedro Cerrano from Major League) I got Big “marbles” dance folks have been doing for years. Eddie House did it last night vs OKC after hitting a big 3 and I didn’t hear abt a fine for him…….oh yeah……..I forgot, he plays wit Lebron so its cool for him to do.

Papa Report:
22 pts
2 reb
10-15 from free-throw line.

He’s looking a lot better over his last few games as a starter, really attacking the basket.

Worldwide Clyde,

Mine too. I think they got Jeje also. I guess if you talk negative about the team, or a player or coach enough they try to ban you.

Nothing more than a traffic ticket to Josh.

Further proven that comparing the fine using his salary with that of someone making $50,000 a year, Josh paying $25,000 is the equivalent of the $50k worker paying $107.

I doubt many folks getting a $107 speeding ticket slow down much as a result of paying the ticket.

As for this great athlete that refuses to grow up emotionally, I seriously doubt he will change his ways either!

No one should ever be banned for having an honest opinion!
Hopefully, that is not the case, we are NOT bobble-heads.

Seems like the tight azz owners are punishing fans for booing the team last seson. Is this EGYPT or the Free World?

Come on ASKillerG! Who are gonna’ argue and battle with around here now?
This is our blog and we can dance if we want to. Just sell the franchise already!

As long as were not abusive and threatening each other ar abusing MC like the trolle was doing last summer. I love a good ole’ fist fight – we all got passion and love for the team!

LOL! Now why would any one want to block this TOOL? He really brings a lot of insight to the topic of Hawks Basketball. While the world is riddled with so much negativity? Why not choose unbridled optimism? I symbolize and epitomize positive thinking and actions – it has been the only key to my professional and personal success. If you don’t love me, then you just don’t love – Love.

Back to work now, later fellas!

For those who are calling Josh immature for the gesture that he did (though in country clubs all around the States, you’ll find much worse done on the golf course), explain why when he did it, the fans in the stadium went crazy? And explain what’s the difference in him doing that and the WWE making MILLIONS off of Degeneration X for over 3 years. On the gridiron and in the dugout, this is a routine gesture that is constantly done. The only difference is you don’t have Sportsouth replaying it with it zoomed in.

“ZaZa’s value – Against the Celts you have Shaq 320, Kendrick 285, Big Baby 285, and even Jermaine O’Neal at 265. Our only guy over 260 is ZaZa @ 275. Then Etan 260 and Collins 255. Gotta keep ZaZa as frustrating as he is many times.”

Collins did a better job against Dwight Howard this year than any other Hawk has ever done. Weight isn’t nearly as important as balance and lower body strength. Zaza is so damn goofy and unbalanced that he is incapable of establishing position even against smaller people. I’d rather have the supposedly lighter Collins guarding those people (note that NBA weights are never necessarily all that accurate) than the supposedly heavier Zaza.

LOL @ Clyde and Rod from CP – my boys!!!!

LOL I CANNOT post from my apartment – everywhere else though, I can.

It’s okay though because usually at least one person says what I have to say, whether it’s that Bibby sucks, Marvin has no heart (except for that fight the other day), or that LD shows no emotion and has horrendous rotations, or that Sund is a garbage GM.

If we believe MC, maybe it has something to do with the browser. I saw Sautee mention he was having problems with Firefox on this blog. I use Firefox also. Won’t let me post from a home location also.

terrell…that’s exactly what i meant…if we’re trading a 1st round pick, i want more in return than the right to pay dahntay jones $2.5M a year for the next 3 years (or whatever his contract is)…same with trading away our 4th best player (jamal)…i want more in return than 3 months of ford & foster, and someone taking zaza off our hands.

Hawks exposed…

Last week, the Hawks’ inability to defend the PG position was exposed. This weekend, Dallas exposed the interior defense down the stretch. Surely, the Hawks will win 50% of their games and wind up a little over .500, around 43-44 wins.

They’ll make the playoffs as a 4th/5th/6th seed and might even get outta the first round. But that’s it, that’s the most you can hope for outta this bunch. It ain’t happening without some tweaking. In fact, the Hawks are trending down, not up, as predicted.

Both, Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson have masked their weaknesses with Herculean scoring efforts, but down the stretch, especially against good teams, you have to defend and rebound and the Hawks simply cannot.

It’s the 2nd half of the season and it is, what it is, Tree Rollins nor Mookie Blaylock is running outta that tunnel. It’s time to get on the phone and start the horse trading.

We need a cheap, quick PG that can handle the rock and stay in front of his man. Why Teague cant do that? Don’t know, don’t care, all I know is he hasn’t and he won’t.

Even AC Law impressed me last night as the Warriors knocked off the Jazz. I think he knows who he is now, but he was handling and pushing the rock and hustling and picking up his man 3/4 court. He understands how to be a nuisance to the opponent and I wished he were back in a Hawks uniform. That’s all we need in the backcourt. Jamal and Joe will score.

I dont know what ZaZa’s deal is but he’s gotten progressively worse over the last two years. Not starting stunted his growth more than anyone probably expected but he is not the same player. Either he gets a few ceremonial starts to get him going again or move him for someone who can hit a layup, block a shot or take a charge.

But that’s just a paying fans point of view. I hope every year to get outta the second round, but I know the reality is that you probably are going to have to go over the luxury cap to get the pieces to compete and with an ownership unwilling or unable; its just mental masturbation.

“Zaza Pachulia was called for a three-second violation . Two possessions later, guard Jamal Crawford lost the ball trying to split a double team. Pachulia missed from seven feet. Pachulia got his shot blocked.”

Bless his heart, ZaZa is trying so hard out there people!!!!

“NEWSFLASH” DWILL is at odds with his coach and Utah organization..Sund start inquiring about this potential block buster deal.. His contract is up next year..He would look great in a Hawks uniform. Would instantly become the best PG ever in Hawks land…..And take you to an ECF? Maybe??

Get to it Sund……Don’t procrastinate..You already know how the story is going to end this year if you keep the CORE…………………..

In you r zeal to see the Hawks improve, you keep forgetting what I’ve told you now three times:

Mike Gearon, Jr. LOVES our core. If Mikey doesn’t specifically order Sund to make a trade, then it “ain’t happenin”.

Wishful thinking, and pipe dreams won’t do sh!t except get you disappointed.

Sorry, man but our only hope is an ownership change or a protracted losing streak.

Michael, I don’t often.. or ever. post on your blog, but I have posted on Hawks blogs in the past, and I’m a regular poster on the Braves blogs of the AJC.

I don’t live in the Atlanta area, and I didn’t see Smith’s gesture, but.. from the feedback I’ve been getting.. I think the league fined him because what he did set a bad example for young fans at the game, and on TV. It was lewd, rude, and uncalled for.

While it may not be as bad.. as say.. giving an opponent.. or the crowd, the famous one finger salute, it still isn’t right.

I actually agree with the fine. There was no cause for Smith to be doing that.
