Mavs-Hawks game thread
Greetings, all-
Hope you’re well. This is going to be brief, as I gotta crank out some notes before game time. Some notes…
1) Hawks going with regular lineup, with Mo Evans in for Marvin Williams, serving a two-game suspension.
2) Larry Drew said the key defensively is slowing down Dallas’ transition game, saying the team has to “build a wall” to prevent the Mavericks, specifically Jason Kidd, from attacking the rim on the break. Al Horford mentioned defending the pick-and-roll.
3) Drew said that Williams was in a great state of mind this morning. He’s watching the game at the team hotel.
4) Horford had some words in response to Amare Stoudemire’s post-game caution to Horford to calm down after he got the crowd going as Stoudemire shot free throws, that “he’s not that type of player.” Basically, he said that he’ll do whatever it takes to win, so, yes, he is that type of player.
5) I asked Drew about Marvin pushing him during the fracas. Drew: “I’ve been in the weight room. I didn’t feel anything.”
6) On the Mavs’ bench assisting Rick Carlisle: Terry Stotts.
7) I asked Mark Cuban a few questions about Hawks ownership. Interesting, but not headline-grabbing. I’ll post afterwards.
I probably won’t be able to comment much, given the late start, but will try to jump on occasionally. Enjoy the game.

I would rather seriously lose 50+ games for a couple of seasons and try to land lottery picks to find replacements for Bibby, Zaza, Marvin, Mo Evans than continue with these scrubs.
Seriously, it gets irritating as hell watching these guys. We may win more games with them, but we’re not going anywhere in the playoffs with these guys seeing significant minutes in games.

Joe got the ball on the block and got it swatted away by Marion; Smoove got it on the block and took an ill advised fadeaway jumper instead of making Dirk work. Both bad plays, but that doesn’t mean the Hawks should abandon the post right now. Keep going to that well, especially with Joe, considering how hot Joe has been in the lane all game.

It’s really unbelievable how quickly this game turned. I’m at work, and went to the bathroom, game still close. 4 minutes later ( in real time ), we’re down 10?

Why are we isolating Josh against Dirk? Dirk may not be the best defender, but he’s got a significant size advantage on Josh which is resulting in Josh settling for fadeaways. That’s never a good thing. I think we need to abandon that attempt. It hasn’t gotten us much success at all. We need to try something else. Maybe some Horford pick-and-pop, or some JJ backdoor cuts. If the Mavs are going to play Marion on Horford, we need to go at that matchup for sure.

Even if Joe is on fire, Iso-Joe is ultimately a mirage. NOBODY is going to make a high percentage of his shots if he goes one on five. It’s just not going to happen.
That Kidd 3 is pretty much the dagger in the coffin.

There was a slim chance that the Hawks could comeback and win this game, why not play Teague and let him play some meaningful mins the would help in his development… SMH at LD…

I knew that 3 was good by Kidd as soon as it left his hand.
Oh well.
Mavs going with the screen every trip down. Either they isolated Bibby on defense, or Jamal. Horford should probably leave Chandler a little to help on Dirk in the post.
Only a 3 point barrage can save us now. Decent effort nonetheless by the Hawks. Just had a 3 minute meltdown that cost them the game.

Lol your down by 7 with jsut over 2 mins to go and your trying to get back in the game with jump shots. Seriously, put Teague in the game and tell him to take it to the hole. I dont even care if he turns it over. Bibby aint doing nothing, AL cant make a shot and seems intimidated to take it to the whole. JJ is doing what he needs to be doing (scoring….sometimes), Damien sems like a non factor, and I dont even know who the other guy is on the floor.
It’s hard being a hawks fan. But we gotta live with it.

Even with Al having an off night, I’m wondering why they don’t go to that pick & pop when they’re struggling to find a shot.
Instead of going to Josh down in the post, or ISO-JJ, try to get Horford a clean mid-range look. Pick & pop…?
I don’t know. They need to address these 4th quarter lulls though, because it’s beyond sad.

The problem with the Hawks is that we don’t have a low post player to simply toss the ball down to on the blocks. Smith is decent, but he rather shoot jumpers. Horford would definitely rather shoot jumpers. Our best guy down on the blocks is JJ, and he’ll get doubled and have to pass it out to a shooter.
LOL @ that shot by JJ . . that’s a “I don’t trust my team” type of shot.
Game really over now.
