Mavs-Hawks game thread
Greetings, all-
Hope you’re well. This is going to be brief, as I gotta crank out some notes before game time. Some notes…
1) Hawks going with regular lineup, with Mo Evans in for Marvin Williams, serving a two-game suspension.
2) Larry Drew said the key defensively is slowing down Dallas’ transition game, saying the team has to “build a wall” to prevent the Mavericks, specifically Jason Kidd, from attacking the rim on the break. Al Horford mentioned defending the pick-and-roll.
3) Drew said that Williams was in a great state of mind this morning. He’s watching the game at the team hotel.
4) Horford had some words in response to Amare Stoudemire’s post-game caution to Horford to calm down after he got the crowd going as Stoudemire shot free throws, that “he’s not that type of player.” Basically, he said that he’ll do whatever it takes to win, so, yes, he is that type of player.
5) I asked Drew about Marvin pushing him during the fracas. Drew: “I’ve been in the weight room. I didn’t feel anything.”
6) On the Mavs’ bench assisting Rick Carlisle: Terry Stotts.
7) I asked Mark Cuban a few questions about Hawks ownership. Interesting, but not headline-grabbing. I’ll post afterwards.
I probably won’t be able to comment much, given the late start, but will try to jump on occasionally. Enjoy the game.

It’s Larry Drew’s fault that the Hawks are down by so much right now. He shouldn’t have stuck with the bench for so long. Joe, Josh, and Al all had a pretty long rest. It was a bad move to gamble with the bench when the game was so close on the road. Now, the Hawks have to dig out of a hole.

LD took too long to get Horford and Smoove back in the game. If anything he should have gone with Collins over Zaza. Zaza pretty much accounted for a 6 or 7 point swing over the last two minutes in the Mavs’ favor.

In 16 minutes, ZaZa is -13.
He is 1-4 from the field, 2 turnovers, 2 fouls. He is soft, and can’t hold on to the ball.
Haws defense is bad though. Teague is on Terry, who swings the ball to Dirk for a 3. And Teague ends up being the one to contest Dirk’s shot?
Where is the defense?

Al needs to quit giving up the ball. When he gets it at the free throw line he needs to drive or shoot. He is too good from that spot on the floor to be giving up to the Hawks’ streaky perimeter shooters. This is the 3rd or 4th time he has done that. Quit being passive.

The bench may have sealed the Hawks fate in this one. How ZaZa manages to get minutes over Collins is beyond me smh.

Whoever was saying that the Hawks were going to run into trouble with the strategy that they were using earlier once the Mavs tightened up their defense was right. The Hawks are struggling to score right now due to too much isolation. Also, when they are attempting to move the ball, they are turning the ball over way too much.
