Mavs-Hawks game thread

Greetings, all-

Hope you’re well. This is going to be brief, as I gotta crank out some notes before game time. Some notes…

1) Hawks going with regular lineup, with Mo Evans in for Marvin Williams, serving a two-game suspension.

2) Larry Drew said the key defensively is slowing down Dallas’ transition game, saying the team has to “build a wall” to prevent the Mavericks, specifically Jason Kidd, from attacking the rim on the break. Al Horford mentioned defending the pick-and-roll.

3) Drew said that Williams was in a great state of mind this morning. He’s watching the game at the team hotel.

4) Horford had some words in response to Amare Stoudemire’s post-game caution to Horford to calm down after he got the crowd going as Stoudemire shot free throws, that “he’s not that type of player.” Basically, he said that he’ll do whatever it takes to win, so, yes, he is that type of player.

5) I asked Drew about Marvin pushing him during the fracas. Drew: “I’ve been in the weight room. I didn’t feel anything.”

6) On the Mavs’ bench assisting Rick Carlisle: Terry Stotts.

7) I asked Mark Cuban a few questions about Hawks ownership. Interesting, but not headline-grabbing. I’ll post afterwards.

I probably won’t be able to comment much, given the late start, but will try to jump on occasionally. Enjoy the game.

If Hawks can keep it close, then they have a chance to steal this game.

Teague playing with more fire, Joe is smoking as usual in January.

This is the best Teague has looked the entire season.

This has been an incredibly disappointing game to watch. I know the Hawks have the lead right now, but I don’t like the way they are playing. It’s too much 1 vs. 1 basketball, and once the Mavs make an adjustment, I feel like we might run into a lot of trouble. We need to do a better job of moving the ball.

Someone should tell Teague to push the ball EVERY time he gets it, run into the defender who cares man you got to get going once that rock is in your hands, just like the last play EASY layup.

Teague, is playing great! Maybe, Bibby is tired and got those fouls on purpose, to give Teague a look? Arenas faked a knee injury to get PT for his boy in Washington, maybe Bibby is doing the same?

I guess, Teague should get more PT. Some players play better in games than practice.

Teauge’s biggest impact is on defense (still does not do much on the half-court offense yet), for reasons covered by Melvin.

7 minutes, 0 points, 3 fouls for Bibby

4 minutes, 5 points for Teague.

Teague needs to keep it up, because if he plays like this consistently, it will be hard for LD to not give him more PT

For the Hawks to win. Smoove will have to play under control when he get back into the game!

man ld should give jeff T.more of bibbys minutes, its crazy not to.he cant shoot as good, but he can shoot better than bibby can get to the basket, and better than bibby plays d. How else he ’s gonna get better without playing. bibby hurts the hawks so much. dont see how ld and the staff dont c it, its crazy. jeff plays some real good d my goodness what are they waiting on, time 4 a change of the guards at point.

Wasn’t that a preseason game, besides two of Bibby’s fouls put them at the free throw line one of them was the three pointer by Terry, I think Mike is smart enough not to jeopardize the game because he wants to give Teague some PT.

Collins needs to make the extra pass. Horford is still not getting the ball on offense. If Dallas stops the Hawks’ transition opportunities and forces them to beat them in the half court, there’s no excuse for not getting the ball more to Horford.

Dumb foul by Jamal. Aside from a couple of his patented off balance shots that he has made, he has not played a very good game. A lot of bricks out of the flow of the offense, lackluster pick and roll defense, and now this dumb foul to give the Mavs a chance to take the lead.

i dont know.. he still isnt aggressive enough for me.. especially given his skill set. he rather someone else miss vs. making a confident aggressive move ..

Im all for Teague earning his minutes by showing he wants it, however Ive need been high on Crawford, case and point. Of course the guy can shoot lights out but when he is off, he shows nothing else, no defense and he keeps chucking up ducks

That clear path foul really shifted the momentum at the end of the half. Good contributions from Collins and Teague, not so much from Jamal. Mavs’ zone forced the Hawks out of their offense a little bit and made them go perimeter a little too much.

Still, though, down by only 3 at halftime is a pretty good spot to be in.

If I were LD I would strongly consider coming out with the big lineup in the 3rd quarter. Collins was playing pretty well, Mo didn’t have any impact whatsoever, and Horford was playing better defense against Dirk than Smoove. Let Horford continue to D up Dirk and let Smoove get in the passing lanes and create transition opportunities.

Jordan will learn if he gets minutes on the floor.

Again, I know Jordan’s no 3. And Damien gets minutes mainly due to Marvin’s inability to stay in action. But, when a guy on 10-day contracts can find minutes, it’s hard to figure out why a talented rookie can’t.

Jordan could be a solid threat off the bench for this team. And it’d also make sense to sprinkle in some minutes for this kid when Jamal isn’t having the best of games – like tonight for instance. Jamal has had some good looks from beyond the arc, he hasn’t hit them. Give Jordan those same looks, I think he’s capable of knockin a few of them down.

No question Jamal > Jordan right now. But, Jordan can score. Don’t think you can knock on Jordan’s defense, because I don’t think there’s a gaurd on this team (aside from JJ and Teague) who can stay in front of his guy.

cp

I would let Teague start the 3rd. Bibby isn’t doing anything out there but getting beat off the dribble. Jamal is looking like he did last night, jacking up a bunch of jumpers and not playing defense. The Knicks got back in the game when Jamal decided to go hot sauce out there. LD has to start pulling Jamal when he is cold because he does nothing else.

Teague can actually play if he’s out there with the starters. Contributing as much as Bibby and Jamal so far tonight, that’s for sure.

I dont get why people think Teague’s problem is LD. LD wants Teague to step up and take the spotlight, he even said his skill set is what the team lacks. What is he to do put a guy out there that dont want it? Now that said Teague is getting after it tonight and its this consistency that LD is looking for.

It continues to amazes me how the team can repeatedly continue to under-utilize Horford on the offensive end. I mean, seriously, 3 field goal attempts in the half, when most of the options on the court are worse than him offensively? Give me a break. There’s no excuse for not utilizing Horford more, especially when the guards are not having success in isolation plays in the halfcourt and are not getting into transition. If Horford has Dirk or Marion guarding him, the team should make a serious effort to get him the ball in the post, and if they are denying him in the post, that pick and pop is going to be available all night. Come on, guys, get it together. Even Dennis Scott commented on how the Hawks need to get Al going in this game.

Yeah, Teague has earned the right to start the third. He’s played awesome tonight. I really don’t see why not? Hawks need to pick up the pace, like last night. Play fast as possible. Tell Teague to run like A.Iverson did and John Wall does!

This is exactly why I said Bibby should not start the third.

He misses a 3, and picks up another foul. if he is not making shots, and can’t guard his man, why is he out there?

(( clapping )) @ Teague

This is all the coaches are asking out of him.

Play hard, and try his best to use his strengths as a player to impact a game. He can’t coast ( especially in practice ). Go ALL OUT!

And that’s how he can make an impact in a game . . in the 2nd quarter . . while the game is still in the balance.

Teague balling in a blowout situation doesn’t impress me any. Teague balling just like he did at the end of that 2nd quarter, is much more impressive.

There’s no conspiracy theory here. If he played like that all the time, he’d play more.

And see folks, it’s possible to make an impact in just a few minutes of game time.
