Mavs-Hawks game thread
Greetings, all-
Hope you’re well. This is going to be brief, as I gotta crank out some notes before game time. Some notes…
1) Hawks going with regular lineup, with Mo Evans in for Marvin Williams, serving a two-game suspension.
2) Larry Drew said the key defensively is slowing down Dallas’ transition game, saying the team has to “build a wall” to prevent the Mavericks, specifically Jason Kidd, from attacking the rim on the break. Al Horford mentioned defending the pick-and-roll.
3) Drew said that Williams was in a great state of mind this morning. He’s watching the game at the team hotel.
4) Horford had some words in response to Amare Stoudemire’s post-game caution to Horford to calm down after he got the crowd going as Stoudemire shot free throws, that “he’s not that type of player.” Basically, he said that he’ll do whatever it takes to win, so, yes, he is that type of player.
5) I asked Drew about Marvin pushing him during the fracas. Drew: “I’ve been in the weight room. I didn’t feel anything.”
6) On the Mavs’ bench assisting Rick Carlisle: Terry Stotts.
7) I asked Mark Cuban a few questions about Hawks ownership. Interesting, but not headline-grabbing. I’ll post afterwards.
I probably won’t be able to comment much, given the late start, but will try to jump on occasionally. Enjoy the game.

Good offensive quarter with good ball movement and execution. Defense fell apart a little towards the end though. The 2nd foul on Smoove hurts — you could tell he didn’t contest Pavlovic’s layup like he normally would because he didn’t want to pick up #3.
Keep getting Joe the ball on the block and coming off screens and don’t revert to isolation, and they should be able to at least keep up going into the half.

Even Zaza has more field goal attempts than Al so far in this game. When the Hawks under-utilize Horford, they are basically asking to lose. I hope they realize that before it’s too late in this game.

Al needs to make his move more quickly when he gets the ball. He can take most of these Mavericks defenders off the dribble. No need to stand around thinking about it.

Nice shot by Horford over Dirk, but I’d like to see him drive it on him. The Hawks haven’t made Dirk work defensively at all. They need to attack him.

Terry Stotts did a good job with the personnel he had. I would rather watch Sura, Terry, and Stephen Jackson than Bibby, Joe, and Jsmooth.

Way too much perimeter right now. They scored on the last two possessions despite Horford not touching the ball. That’s not sustainable. Horford needs to start getting the ball in a position to drive it.

This is Teagues chance to finally show something. Good 3 he just hit. He has to make the most of this opportunity. Very disappointed to hear earlier that he isn’t working hard. Time to show the staff he can get it done

I tired of seeing that little midget Barea ducking his shoulder into our guys midsection. Would someone (on the Hawks) please bust him on his azz. Make him think twice about coming into the paint again.

All Teague is gonna do is pass it to the wing behind the 3 pt line, he thinks he is Bibby. Walking the ball up is NOT a change of pace from the PG position.

That’s two transition opportunities in which Teague has been involved — one with a steal and a dime, the other one with the finish. Good to see him making an impact. And Horford is doing a better job on Dirk than Smoove did in the first quarter, trying to deny the entry pass to him.
