Atlanta Hawks: Damien Wilkins signed for rest of season

The Hawks announced they’ve signed swingman Damien Wilkins for the remainder of the season.

Wilkins has appeared in 20 games as a reserve, with coach Larry Drew casting him as a wing defender. Wilkins is averaging 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 12.3 minutes while shooting 45 percent from the field.

The Hawks originally signed Wilkins on Dec. 3 after guard Joe Johnson had elbow surgery. The Hawks waived Wilkins on Jan. 5, after Johnson had returned to the lineup and before the date contracts became guaranteed. Wilkins signed 10-day contracts with Atlanta on Jan. 8 and 18, and NBA rules required the team to sign him for the rest of the season if it wished to retain him.

Wilkins is the nephew of Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins and son of former NBA player Gerald Wilkins.

A move the HAWKS had to make. Damien’s been playing well and we’re definitely not sure how long Marvin will stay health.

So I’m going to assume that since the Hawks are pretty bad on the front end of back-to-backs (when playing a team that played the night before nonetheless), that they’re going to find a way to lose this game tonight against the Knicks. However, since they’ve played pretty decent on the road and on the second end of back-to-backs, they will probably make up for tonight’s screw-up with a pretty impressive win at Dallas tommorow night.

Yep, I think I have this all figured out now.

Good move by the Hawks to retain Damien for the rest of the year. My only concern is they are now at 15 positions on the roster, so there is no more flexibility.

I guess they wont be using Chills TPE at the deadline after all.

Fresh,

I think Hawks win tonight. They have done a good job of bouncing back after a bad loss.

O’Brien,

I hope you’re right. Nothing worst than have to listen to a bunch of sh*t-talking New Yorkers at the game.

Congratulation Damien! Now go make your uncle proud, step-up your offense and take minutes from streaky Mo. You definitely got the tools.

Big Ray, is the strain of the season getting to you? You usually give us more than that.
Are you at the end of your rope with Sund?

On the ownership side of things, I wholeheartedly agree that the ASG is in over their head based on the internal activities and lawsuits that are going on. You really can’t expect this ownership group to ‘wake up’
and start making decisions that push this roster to championship level.

It is what it is and the competitive team here is for the most part an afterthought come playoff time. This group along with Sund cannot make enough moves to keep this team in the headlines other than their bumbling ways. They’re just in over their head, and this roster has peaked. They can now sell a competitive team to someone who might have an interest in basketball and how it should be supported by a community.

Great move to keep Damien. Now please take off the handcuffs. How dare LD tell the son of Gerald and the nephew of Nique to not worry about scoring just play defense and bring energy.

Which is why I think no matter who owns the Hawks LD will be looking for another job and not as a HC.

I dont know why they didnt do this earlier. The guy is clearly an upgrade over Mo (size and defense)

Dont understand the Josh hate either. yeah i know he took sum bad shots at the end of the Milwaukee game but so what it was 1 game. Ive really been impressed with Josh’s ability to consistently knock down shots this year, with that said i would pull the trigger on a josh for k love deal in a minute.

Teague is AC Law reincarnated -i cant blame Drew for limiting his minutes.

Does anyone really expect us to make a move by the deadline? SIGH………Dam Shame

Signing Damien is a good thing, and probably came out cheaper than that rest of the year deal.
Damien is a good player for this team. I see him getting some of Marvin’s minutes if Marvin can’t stay of the trainer’s room.

ESPN or nba.com is wrong..they have differing stats.

If LD goes with the big line-up, Wilkins becomes the 6th wing man, behind Joe, Josh, Jamal, Marvin and Mo. LD hasn’t shown a lot of willingness to play Wilkins when everyone is healthy (not unexpectedly since 3rd string players don’t get much burn). Unless Sund makes a a trade (stop laughing), our roster is set with very little PG depth and a ton of wing players. I’ll wait until after the trade deadline before judging this move. But if the current roster stands until post-season, I’d much rather have an “emergency” PG on the roster than a 6th wing.

O'Brien

Good point AJ, although Teague is our “emergency” PG right now (behind Bibby and Jamal).

Knicks coming off an emotional win against Miami last night, so they might have a let down.

And given how the Hawks lost to Milwaukee last time, I think Hawks take care of business.

The signing was definitely a good one being that they need all the help they can get. The rotational shuffling still worries me though. I still think that LD needs to find a consistent rotation at least to break them down and then adjust from that rotation in the second half.

We have had injuries but i think the time to give your younger players some burn is coming to an end the closer to the playoffs we get.

First thought: OK, now we can include him in a trade. Understand he could not be included in a trade before (10 day contract guy). So the signing very well may be a harbinger to what is next.

With the confirmation signing of Damien Wilkins for the remaining of the season, dont be surprise if a trade is in the making for the Hawks before the deadline. Being that, as Astro Joe stated earlier, “Wilkins becomes the 6th wing man, behind Joe, Josh, Jamal, Marvin and Mo,” it allows Sund and the ASG to possibly trade Jamal, Mo, and/or Marvin WITHOUT losing ‘DEFENSE’ in the SF position. Also, it helps having Damien if we acquire a NON-DEFENSE playing PG if Nash is traded here. If Jamal is indeed traded, it too reminds Sund and the ASG that Jordan Crawford is waiting in the wind for his opportunity for some ‘guaranteed minutes’. JUST AN OBSERVATION!!

MsDee

And with ‘guaranteed minutes’ comes CONFIDENCE for the rookie ‘possible PG/SG’ Jordan Crawford!!

OB, I also forgot about Pape Sy, who LD says is a PG. So after his stint in the NBDL, he can return and lockdown Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo and Brandon Jennings for us.

And I agree with you, I expect a fairly easy Hawks victory tonight. At least an 11 point margin of victory.

Astro Joe

Funny, JC2 isn’t a PG but Pape Sy is a PG. More likely, LD wants Sy to defend PGs and doesn’t think JC2 can.

OB, I see Teague now as the 4th PG in play behind JC2 also.

Grandad, so your move says to keep Billups but trade our C and our cheaper PG. That is a fantasy trade…the Hawks aren’t losing much in that swap, yet Denver is losing potentially 2 startin positions after this season because they aren’t giving Billups that big contract next year.

You gotta shoot for Billups if nothing else….then see what it takes to get him. Billups fits this veteran lineup very well even if its for the short term.

Ms.Dee, add me to trade bandwagon…I think something will happen…we can only hope it involves a PG.

I no longer have any trepidation about us acquiring Nash…even if cost us JC1…if that deal is available…we need to make it TODAY…Clearly, it’s going to be while a before Teague is close to being ready…I’m just keeping it real.

I have been one of Teague biggest supporters…and I still am…I still think Teague has the talent and skill to play PG in the NBA…However, it’s going to take some time…which is not unexpected…so just because you bring in help at the PG…doesn’t mean you have to give up Teague.

On a side note…I would like LD to send Teague to the D’League so he can hone his skills at the PG position…let him go down and play every day against guys that are fighting for a pay check…then we will really see what Teague is made of… and so will he.

Hawks are like a bag of mixed nuts, no passion, no leader, no consistency, no pit bull mentality (pardon the pun), no closing ability, no real point guard, no one to tell J Smoove offense starts with defense, no real center, no way they are going to get past the first round, no legit coach, no legit owners, no solid fan base, no….one cares. Knicks will not only win tonight, but they will win big. Wastes= Zaza, Marvin, Mo, Bibby, Teague, Collins…can’t we find quality players to fill these voids? I know they have a winning record, but they are one awful team to watch play…..

With Melo on his way out, I would think Lawson is the most untouchable player on that roster, since he is their only young building block.

All good points, which makes me inclined to agree with MsDee that a trade might be on the horizon.

Either that, or Sund doesn’t know about the roster limit, which also wouldn’t surprise me.

In any case, if it comes down to Damien or Mo I’d much rather have Damien. With him under contract it makes Mo and his expiring contract much more expendable than he otherwise would have been as one of only two SFs on the roster.

I liked Sy, but I don’t see him locking down anyone this year. He definitely has size and some physicality. I liked his energy from some of the D-League games I caught. Overall he seems outmatched and in need of much more time. We’ll be lucky to see him next year.

We need a big and a point. We might need to take some risks to make it happen…or we’ll be back home soon after round 2 starts.
