Atlanta Hawks: Hawks caught in ‘Melo drama

As far as I can tell, the speculation connecting Carmelo Anthony to the Hawks is based solely on a line from Alan Hahn’s story in Newsday (H/T to Hawksquawk.net for the link):

“Other teams, such as the Trail Blazers and Hawks, have been in touch in preliminary terms, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.”

Rick Sund didn’t want to comment on the item yesterday. But knowing how he operates, “preliminary terms” means the Hawks reached out to the Nuggets to see what they are thinking regarding Melo. Sund always stresses that teams constantly make such calls to see if there are deals that make sense but that it doesn’t mean anything will get done or that it ever reaches the level of negotiations.

Once such talks reach the public domain, though, folks get in a frenzy. Before you run too far with Melo and the Hawks, first thing’s first: In an interview with Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post, Melo didn’t include Atlanta on the list of cities where he’d be willing to sign an extension:

I Asked: Are the options strictly New Jersey, New York, Chicago, Denver?

Melo said, “Yeah. But I really can’t say it’s just those, because I don’t really know (what could happen).”

This, of course, is in reference to the reality that Denver could trade Melo to a team he doesn’t want to play for long-term. If that happens, then he might not sign the three-year, $65 million contract extension to play for that team. Instead, he’d opt out of his current contract and be a free agent this summer, likely signing with the Knicks. But – he would take a significant pay cut, due to the new collective bargaining agreement.

Furthermore, the Hawks don’t have the kind of assets the Nets were offering the Nuggets for Melo.. I also doubt the Hawks would be willing to give up a part of their proverbial “core” for a short-term rental of Melo since they still don’t know what this group can do (and such a swap could significantly weaken the Hawks in other areas even as they add Melo). I do think ASG might be willing to pay the luxury tax for Melo because, if you recall, in those comments that got Michael Gearon Jr. fined by the league, he said there are only a few players worth the tax in this market because of the revenues they’d bring in. Melo might–emphasis on might–be a guy who could do that here.

Of course this whole Melo saga could end (it will end, won’t it?) with him signing Denver’s extension offer or rolling the dice and becoming a free agent despite the CBA uncertainty.

Did anyone on here really take the Hawks/Melo thing serious? I didn’t…it would be great to land him, if he would sign an extension. If he won’t, F him.

Michael, your thoughts, do Hawks make a move by the deadline? Yes or no? I know you haven’t heard anything, but gut feeling? I’m saying yes. I just can’t imagine them standing pat (well…actually…I can imagine that, but I don’t think they will.)

HAHA, I’ve never been first at anything. This is a proud moment for me. I would like to thank MC & the God of Time for making this all happen.

But if the Hawks do decide to trade with Melo, I’m guessing Denver would want Josh Smith as the main piece they would get back. The Hawks would have to give more than Josh Smith too, which will make matching salaries real hard. I don’t see a trade happening between Denver & Atlanta unless there was a third party involved.

I always hate “articles” like this and wish it wouldn’t even be reported. I would LOVE to have Melo here but I’d rather not hear about any “inquiries” unless there is evidence the Hawks are currently making a SERIOUS run at him. Otherwise it is wasted space. Does anyone here think the Hawks are actually going to get Melo or be able to sign him to a long-term deal? I would think after the Danny Manning fiasco we would have learned our lesson with “rentals,” and unless we’re somehow going to get Melo without giving up Horford, Josh Smith or Joe Johnson, trading for Melo is a waste of time.

Adding Carmelo Anthony to the Hawks doesn’t guarantee any improvement at all. He’s never won a thing in the NBA and he’s as one-dimensional a player as there is in the league. Sure, he’s a prolific scorer, but without the ball in his hands, he just occupies space. Defense is an afterthought, and he doesn’t make his teammates better. I mean no disrespect to the greatest Hawk of all time, but Melo is a 21st century Nique — lots of flashy highlights, but nowhere near complete enough to lead a team to a championship.

No thanks.

The Hawks, as constituted, have no chance of closing the gap on Boston-Miami-Orlando, and now probably even Chicago. They won’t get better with age. In the NBA, you’re only as good as your franchise player and his supporting cast. The Hawks would have to part with some of their supporting players to get a franchise guy.

Melo is a big name and all, but he’s not worth giving up a ton for. Yeah, he puts up nice stats, but what has he ever won in the NBA? The only way it would be worth it is if the Hawks could still keep Josh Smith and Al Horford.

Melo has done something that no team in Atlanta Hawk history has done . . and that’s reach a conference final.

KG didn’t do jack either, until he got quality players like Cassell and Spreewell to play with. And even then, that team maxed out in the Western Conference Finals.

Paul Pierce never did jack, but even he reached a Conference Finals once

Ray Allen never did jack in Seattle, but did reach a Conference Finals in 2000 with Milwaukee, alongside Cassell and Big Dog.

Pau Gasol never did jack in Memphis, going 0 – 12 in the playoffs.

But as soon as KG and Allen teamed with Pierce, they were a champion. Soon as Gasol teamed with Kobe, he was a champion.

Some of you sound silly in this Melo debate. If the Hawks only lost one of the core players, they’d be better off as a team.

If we could get away with giving up Jamal, Mo, and one of the kids . . and keep the precious “core” intact . . you DEFINITELY do that for a partial season rental.

northcyde, just for the sake of talk…let’s say the Hawks get ‘Melo as a rental, and manage to keep the sacred “core” intact. You pick them to come out of the East?

I’m not sure…They’re in the conversation, though. You would have a great perimeter game (Joe Johnson, Bibby, ‘Melo, Marvin (sometimes)). Al would still be at the 5 and have matchup issues, which usually means foul trouble. Josh Smith would be at the 4, though. And, with ‘Melo at the 3, I would think Josh would almost be forced (if it is possible to force him to do anything), to play strickly around the basket.

It’s interesting…I still have a hard time giving up someone big just for a rental.

If Denver was concerned about cutting payroll, and wanted a little bit of talent in return, I’d trade them

Jamal + Mo + Powell + Jordan . . for Carmelo ( if Melo agrees to sign an extension, toss in a 1st round pick in 2011, which would be in the mid 20s anyway )

Hawks lineup would look like this:

C – Horford
PF – Smith
F – Anthony
G – Johnson
PG – Bibby

6th – Marvin
7th – Zaza
8th – Teague
9th – Wilkins
10th – Collins

11th – Etan
12th – Sy

. . and we’d have to add one more player to make 13. Hell, bring in some scrub big man. Anybody, so that he can dress in a suit every night. And we’d assemble a starting lineup that would rival Boston as being the best in the league.

Marvin would assume the 6th man role he probably should be in anyway. Teague would HAVE to play, satisfying folks in the fan base. JJ or Melo could be on the floor at all times, keeping a potent scorer out on the floor. And the Hawks could generate a buzz in this city for basketbal that hasn’t been seen in the 80s.

The only issue would be . . what number would Melo wear, if Horford refused to give up his number?

As long as we dont give up JJ or Al, there’s no way you can tell me Melo want HELP this team. No Way! Bibby/JJ/Melo/Al/Collins is better than what were putting out there right now. Not even close. Give em Josh/Jamal/two 1sts if AT ALL possible. It’s not like we’re going anywhere with the “core” this year anyway. Or next year. Or the year after that. Or the year after that. Or the year after that. And even if he’s a rental, think about all the cap space we’d have to upgrade the center(Nene, Chandler, Perkins, Prizbilla), and pg(Brooks, Parker, Conley, Barea) positions. Then we can replace Melo for a cheap T-Mac. lol!

@ 303

You add Melo to the Hawks, without giving up the “core”, we become VERY DANGEROUS. People wouldn’t make us the favorite in the East ( simply out of hate ). But no way could people overlook us.

That trade I listed works, by the way. That’s a pipe dream type of trade though. But if all they wanted was expiring contracts, and a few pieces of young talent, we could definitely give them that.

I know one thing. That team may still not be able to beat Boston in a playoff series, but they could take out Orlando, Miami, and Chicago in a series.

Melo wouldn’t have to look to average 25 ppg here. He could be sold on playing the balanced attack that Orlando, Boston, and San Antonio comes at people with.

I like my chances with that team . . A LOT.

The only way the Hawks would get involved with any trade involving Carmelo Anthony would be as a 3rd party for facilator to make the deal go through. We would probably be willing to send an expiring contract(Jamal or MEvans), and/or a draft pick(s), and/or a player(Bibby or Teague)for someone like PG DHarris.

Upgrading our PG position with DHarris would provide much better improvement than upgrading the SF position with CAnthony. CAnthony would give us more of what we already have, and that’s scoring, while DHarris could provide us with scoring, assists, size, versatility, penetrating ability, and better perimeter DEF.

I’m not upset (child please!). I’m actually at work right now thinking about were I would like to have dinner tonight with my beautiful lady-friend :)

However you’re most likely gonna be very upset because any logical thinking person knows this trade is not gonna happen. And with that being said, I’ll leave this entire internet space here just for you so you can continue typing out your fantasy on Carmelo. Dueces!

I don’t know what it would take to get Melo but if they were willing to take Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and a 1st rd pick we should make that deal before the Nuggets ownership are committed to the looney bin and run down Peachtree laughing like hell. If the Nuggets would be dumb enough to take Joe Johnson, a role player and a 1st rounder for him (not sure if Joe’s contract would work with this deal) then we really would’ve gotten over on them. If we can get Melo with out giving up Horford and half of the team we should do it.

Didn’t we rent Danny Manning? That did not turn out well.
He was suppose to be the missing link when we got him,
and was gone the next year.

I posted a Trade Machine link during the previous blog’s Melo discussion of a three way trade which I think would have a chance of being accepted by all sides and would improve the Hawks (contingent of course on Melo signing an extension, without which any trade for Melo would be a Teixeirian disaster).

Hawks would get Melo and Rip Hamilton
Pistons would get Marvin, Mo, and Teague
Nuggets would get Joe Johnson, a Hawks first rounder, and a Pistons first rounder

Hawks swap out their leading scorer for a better leading scorer and swap out their overpaid small forward for a more overpaid but much better 2 guard with championship experience

Nuggets get back an All Star and picks to replace Melo

Pistons shed a huge contract and locker room distraction from their payroll and gain a prospect still on his rookie scale deal, saving a total of about $13 million in salary spread out over three years

With all that said, I think the Hawks can get Nash for a much more reasonable price, and I’d ideally like to see them pursue a Nash trade.

MC, so why is it that we can get blown out when the mighty Josh Smith is playing such great defense? Hell, I see people attacking the paint when he’s in there. And youre right, it’s the perimeter d that kills us. But Smoove nor Melo can help with that. Thats why I’d go with Melo. Heck, a guy like a Craig Smith, or Reggie Evans, could compensate for Smooves absence on the defensive end. Trade a couple of our bench players(Mo/Teague) for one of those guys while adding Melo and I think we’re a better team.
Bibby/JJ/Melo/Horford/Collins
Jamal/Mo/Marvin/Evans/Zaza
JC2/Damien
And once again, I know the trade probably wont happen. Just havin a little fun. lol! Never no though.

“And btw, Smoove’s defense is overated as hell.”

Every defensive stat on basketball-reference disagrees with you. Last time I checked (five days ago) Smoove was the only player in the league who is top 20 in steals, blocks, defensive rating, and defensive win shares. If Dwight Howard were to get abducted by aliens, Smoove would have a very legit case for Defensive Player of the Year.

A trade for ‘Melo would definitely interrupt the chemistry of this team.. Not sure if he can fit in with the “motion” offense style of play. Sharing the ball not one of his better attributes. Losing the core players would weaken the Hawks this year but years to come.

A more realistic goal is to trade for a center before the deadline with these injuries that we have been having, some help in the post against these strong Eastern Conf. teams would be perfect. Somebody like a Brendan Haywood type a decent passing guy that plays a little defense is great for the motion offense.

I am laughing my tooshie off over the comments on here. I especially like the people defending “JSmoove’s” Defense. Since when has there been any Defense in the NBA? The NBA sucks badly.
Does anyone really think the Hawks have a chance in the next 5 years? Seriously? They should trade for draft picks ASAP. Do you want a decent team for the next five years just to get trounced in the 2nd round of the playoffs every year OR do you want a young nucleus built through the draft playing together for the next ten years playing for championships. The goal is to win it all, and this team sure as hell won’t!

No trades…Hawks will be swept again in the 2nd round. If the Hawks are serious and want to compete or just maintain the status quo i.e., have to sell tickets for 7.50 and market/promo/beg folks to attend games! They MUST make a big trade! Bring in Melo; everyone else, except JJ, Horford, and Jamaal or Smith(pick one) should be subject to trade including a future first round pick. I read people talking about get rid of JJ, no elite player would come to play with the hawks without JJ as a core player.

A. Larry Drew is as inconsistent as the Hawks players are. He does not understand gameflow.

B. Josh Smith takes too many shots.

C. Al Horford does not get enough shots.

D. The Hawks will never win anything worthy of noting until they get another legit starting PG and C.

We need to send Marvin, Crawford, and Zaza to Denver for Mello and Birdman.
Then we need to send Evans to Phoenix for Garret Siler.
Bring Pape Sy back to the team and resign Mario West.

PG- Teague
SG- Johnson
SF- Mello
PF- Smith
C- Horford

PG-Bibby (new instant offense off the bench to replace JC1)
SG-Crawoford
SF-Wilkins
PF-Powell
C-Siler

Sy and Collins are still there together with West to complete the team.

Smoove’s defense replaceable? Go look at available free agents and tell me who you can get to replace his defense. And whiel your at it, see if that free agent can replace his offense as well. If there was anyone, Mark Cuban would have already snatched them up. Point is Smoove is hard to replace. Only person you could honestly replace him with, would be a younger Tayshaun Prince.

Let’s be realistic here. You cant move Smoove. I’ve bashed him for his shot selection and attitude, but you move him and you lose to much. Mr.Melo wont bring you defense. He is an elite scorer. We all know that. But I would not put Smoove in any trade talks involving Melo. Extension or not. We are’nt the Heat or the Magic, that will go out and fill in the missing pieces. Do you honestly beleive that if we somehow got Melo in a trade that involved Smith, that Mr.Sund would go out and look for some defense!?

And dont anyone of you dare and mention Chris “Birdman” Andersen. I think after the ‘05 All-Star weekend he should retire that whole “Birdman” thing.

ANYWAYS, back to topic. I think we need to move Al Horford. That dude is a beast. But I dont think he’s at his full potential with the Hawks. I’d hate to lose him, but If I’m able to keep JJ and Smoove while adding Melo (w/ extension) I’m all for it. And would the Nuggets NOT want to build around a young, strong, smart, beastly power forward?

Now ofcourse the problem with that is how well would Smoove do as a full-time 4. I don’t know which position he perfers. Anyone know?

I know see why JJ called some of the Hawks fans out. You complain about JJ and Jamal using Iso’s over and over. But, Carmelo is just as much a ISO player as JJ or Jamal ever have been. Some will say he scores in different ways. Well, JJ scores in the post, on ISO’s, on three’s, on mid range.

Plus, if you look at Carmelo’s numbers he currently averages about four more points than JJ does and two or so rebounds more. Yet, he averages less assists than JJ (so goes your motion offense). However, some of you believe trading JJ and Jamal (or some similar tandem) for Carmelo would make the Hawks so much better. You take JJ and Jamal off the floor and you lose about 40 points a night, plus two guys that can break the defense down and one guy (JJ) that is a solid defensive player, a ample ball handler and usually has a mismatch ever night.

The NBA is a game of non-self made men. There are few self-made men (Steve Nash come to mind) in the NBA, but very few. The NBA either rides the coattails of a big time player (Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Wade, Shaq, Lebron) or relies on the NBA financial coffins to hype a player (Carmelo, B. Roy, Ginobili, Arenas, R. Allen, V. Carter, Iggy, B. Davis) to push them into a level where they really are not. If JJ had ever received the NBA promo and media packages the last group of guys have received in their careers he would likely be more highly thought of in the fan’s eyes. However, I bet you ask most NBA teams and coaches they will tell you JJ is a stud.

Point is, If you compare JJ’s numbers over the past five or so years (points, assists, rebounds, defense) then the only other players that can attest to the same numbers are Kobe, Lebron and Wade. Although, you never hear his name in mainstream media. Is he worth $120 million, I don’t know, but, I can guarantee you that if JJ had the same numbers in a better market than Atlanta and a little NBA promo then the $120 million would not be such a big issue. Some will say it is not JJ’s personality to be a NBA promo player, but I say look at D. Rose, B. Roy, Greg Oden, B. Griffin, and even L. Bird. Those players were forced to become NBA media stars even though they are not the most camera friendly.

After watching the Hwks last night against Milwaukee and seeing how they blew the lead 9again) and how this team relaxes as if they are up 25 points and seeing how Josh Smith repeatedly took bad shots and how he barely played defense…I say…H*ll yeah trade Josh, marvin and Bibby for Melo, and Billups……we have no crunch players and Bibby cannot run a team and control the pace as a starter any longer.. Ship them out. Last night prove why I cannot simply invest my money into a team that will play an entire game……Losing to Milwaukee…come on…Milwaukee who had their three best players (Redd, Jennings & Salmons) not on the flor..Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
