Charlotte – Greetings, all. MC is taking the day off. Watching, literally, one of the worst performances of NBA basketball in league history can take its toll. (Just kidding. It was planned all along to give him a break.)
Some stunning numbers from the number crunchers at Elias Sports Bureau, via ESPN:
It was the first time in NBA history that a team that was at least 10 games over .500 going into the game lost at home by 40 or more points.
It was the team’s second-lowest point total in club history in the shot-clock era, going back to a 1955 loss to Boston when they were the Milwaukee Hawks. I think that was Jason Collins‘ rookie year.
It was the fewest points by a home team since Miami scored 56 in a loss to Utah Dec. 2001.
The Hawks’ 29.1 field-goal percentage was the lowest by an NBA team this season and the team’s lowest in any game since moving to Atlanta.
Yowzers.
Let’s see what basketball-reference.com can tell us about the games following those majestic collapses. After the Milwaukee Hawks lost to Boston in 1955, they lost the next game (a back-to-back) to Philadelphia 101-84.
After the Heat lost 95-56 to Utah, they lost the next game 86-81 to Cleveland in overtime. The Cavs shot 37.5 percent and the Heat shot 35.2 percent. Goodness gracious. I believe that was the year the NBA experimented playing games with yoga balls.
After the Hawks lost 118-74 to Phoenix in March 2000 – the last time the Hawks lost by that many points at home – they followed it up going on the road and losing to Houston 115-93 on their way to a nine-game losing streak. Your starting five against Phoenix –Dikembe Mutombo, Alan Henderson, Jason Terry, Roshown McLeod, Jim Jackson.
Sorry I don’t have more information to offer you right now. I’m in my hotel room right now and will be on the way to the arena in a little bit.
About the Bobcats – they’ve won their last two and six of their last nine. Guard D.J. Augustin went for 31 in their 100-97 win over Philly Thursday. Hawks tormentor Gerald Wallace – he had 11, 25, 20 and 28 last year – only had six against the Sixers, so he might be ready to pop a little bit. He missed the Hawks’ first game with Charlotte this season.
This is totally not relevant to the discussion, but Wallace killed it last year against the West. He had 45 in two games against Denver, 48 against Golden State, 49 against the Clippers, 50 against Phoenix, 66 against Sacramento and 57 against Utah. But, anyway, his 21.0 against the Hawks was tied for second highest of any team in the East.
Joe Johnson’s 16.7 ppg against Charlotte last year was tied for third-lowest of any team in the league. (Orlando, then Philadelphia and tie with Toronto)
Josh Smith did fairly well last year against Charlotte – 52.8 field-goal percentage, 15.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Interestingly (well, you can decide that), Smith is having his best scoring and rebounding month thus far in January at 16.9 and 9.8, but his worst shooting month, 40.6 percent.
O.K., enough nerding out. I’ll be back in a little while.

Josh had Wallace posted.. then sealed.. last 2 possessions, Mo bailed us out w/ a contested made jumper.. last possession turnover.
entry to the post please. if he’s asking for it on the blocks give it to him. the ball always seems to find him when he’s on the perimeter.

Do they keep stats on the number of air balls per game. I’ve never seen a professional, college, or high school game with so many air balls

Its a shame the Hawks just wasted Josh’s defensive play by throwing the ball away on the offensive end.

With this being an 14 point game, at what point does Teague get some PT?
Its like LD has already decided that just isnt good enough to play this season..

Funny, is this not the very lineup I said the Hawks needed to go with last night? I’m sure I said they should go with that lineup at halftime last night. lol

They really should count a charge taken as a steal. If committing a charge counts as a turnover, it should work the other way around. As important of a play as that is, it should be reflected in the stat sheet somehow.

“With this being an 14 point game, at what point does Teague get some PT?”
Nine Hawks have gotten minutes in this game, and two more Hawks are injured. I think it’s safe to say that Teague is at best 12th in the pecking order as far as LD is concerned, and considering that he used JC2 more in the last two games than Teague, it may very well be that Teague has fallen to 13th.

He pulled a Dennis Rodman and threw it into the stands?
Did he give it to Section 303 sitting behind the bench?
Section said he went to Charlotte to Boo Joe Johnson, I wonder how much cheering he did?

Larry Drew is horrible. A huge lead with a couple of minutes to go and Teague gets nothing.
The Hawks are a poorly managed team. Larry will deserve to get fired in 1 year and the Hawks will deserve to perserve their cherrished core. Perhaps Bibby’s great game will help us win a game in the playoffs.
The Hawks are going NOWHERE! They are going down a road that will take them nowhere in the playoffs.
You will deserve what you get Larry (Woody) Drew!

Before everyone leaves i got a quick question.
If Teague is traded,will he:
A.be the point guard we all thought he would become and make the hawks regret the trade..
B.become a serviceable backup..
C.be out of the league in 2 years

Bibby playd 37 minutes, which he really didnt have to.
The funny thing is, whenever LD decides to put Teague in the game in the future, he will expect to play well immediately. And if he doesn’t, it’s back to the milk carton…missing.
sautee,
If im not mistaken, Hawks are 11-3 on the second night of a back to back. I dont know why their record is that good…

What Teague becomes if he leaves here depends on where he goes and what that team gives up to get him. In pro sports, the amount of time and energy a team puts in to develop a player will usually depend on what they have invested in that player. The Hawks have invested a first round pick in Teague, so presumably they should be putting in that type of time to develop him (although they haven’t). If another team picks up Teague, they will likely pick him up in a relatively minor trade and will view him as a more disposable asset, so the chances that Teague gets the opportunity to prove himself somewhere else are slim.
The same thing happened with Acie Law when he got traded; none of the teams he landed on after leaving the Hawks had much invested in him, and as a result none of them had much incentive to give him the opportunity to develop and prove himself.
For a player like him, the ideal situation is to go to a team with weak depth and/or injuries at his position, so that the team has no choice but to give him playing time.

Teague must be falling asleep in team meetings, or arriving late for practices. Something is going on! Maybe he is deaf and mute around the team. Maybe, his is slooow between the ears. Maybe his pulse rate is a notch above a dead man?

Best case scenario for Teague is that he goes to a team that gives him playing time and becomes something along the lines of Tony Parker. Most likely scenario right now, if things keep going the way they are now, is that he’s the next Marcus Banks.

Boston is losing in Washinton. This why you don’t blow games at home the way the Hawks did last night. That was the Hawks oppurtunity to gain ground in the East.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Orlando and Chicago are on their way to blowout wins and Miami already blew out the Raptors. Right now it’s Orlando that matters more to the Hawks than Boston, since they can’t get a top 4 seed without leapfrogging Orlando.

Teague must not be running the plays right in Drew’s motion offense.
Drew was very high on Jeff and hired a personal coach in Van Exel, so, certainly
there has tp be something else going on that we are not privy to.

I just don’t get the “semi-obsession” with Teague. If the dude could ball, he’d be playing. He has a better offensive option with Jamal at PG ( although I don’t like Jamal playing the point ). And he has better defensive options with Mo and Damien, who can adequately guard 2s and 3s.
People want him to trim Bibby’s minutes , but that ain’t happening as long as Bibby is a consistent contributor to the Hawks offensive attack.
Unless Jamal gets hurt, Teague will see limited minutes . . if any.
