Atlanta Hawks: Hornets 100, Hawks 59
11:20 pm January 21, 2011, by Michael Cunningham

Maybe this is all that needed to be said. (Hyosub Shin / hshin@ajc.com)
- After this debacle the question was obvious: How can the Hawks follow up a strong effort at Miami by laying down to the Hornets at home?
- Some of the Hawks’ answers top the question made it sound as if they’d just loss a close one at Boston.
- “The difference was they made shots,” Mo said. “That’s very discouraging throughout the course of the game. Early on, we played great defense on Chris Paul, and he came down and shot a 35-footer. That was the type of night it was for them.”
- Yes, the Hornets made some shots, especially in the third quarter, when Belinelli made some deep threes. But that’s about the only unusual thing that happened. The Hornets basically played like a competent NBA team and won by 41 at Philips.
- Again–how can the Hawks get embarrassed like this at home three days after winning at Miami?
- “You really can’t explain it,” Smoove said. “You have games like this. I think Chris Paul is a very smart point guard. I think he just got the ball where he wanted to with dribble penetration.”
- Yes, CP3 is a very smart and skilled point guard and he did hurt the Hawks with dribble penetration. But Paul had only 16 points and eight assists in 30 minutes while shooting 4 of 10, and the Hawks always struggle with dribble penetration.
- The Hawks also missed a lot of open shots early in the game.
- “We couldn’t make shots and we just panicked,” L.D. said. “We just lost our composure. Then we had defensive breakdowns and the game just slipped away from us.”
- But the Hawks missed shots at Miami, too, and they didn’t stop competing. So, one more time: Can the Hawks explain how they got handled like this at home after handling their business at Miami?
- “No, not at all,” J.J. said. “Over the course of a season you are going to have a two like this. Unfortunately it had to be tonight after a big win against Miami. Give New Orleans credit. They are a great team and they have been playing great basketball for a few weeks now. They came in here and controlled the whole game.”
- Yes, the Hornets are a good team and they’ve been hot. But how can the Hawks. . . aw, forget it.
- It was Atlanta’s largest margin of defeat at home since losing 118-74 to Phoenix on March 30, 2000. The Hawks scored the fewest points in a game since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1968. They avoided the franchise scoring low of 57 points when JC2 made a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left.
- Boos rained down on the Hawks when they left the floor. I actually thought fans showed restraint by waiting until then to let the Hawks have it.
- Maybe they were just keeping things in perspective. Even with this ugly L, the Hawks still are on a good run over the last month.
- “It’s one loss, whether it’s by one or 80,” Mo said. “No matter how disappointing or embarrassing, it’s one loss. Tomorrow we’ve got a chance to go out there and show what kind of team we really are.”
- But that’s the thing, isn’t? Just when you think that scrappy W at Miami provides evidence of what kind of team they really are, the Hawks turn around and lose in a way that makes you wonder what they are about. The same thing happened last weekend, when the big W at Utah was followed by a defenseless L to Houston.
- “Id be lying if I said games like this are easy to forget,” Jamal said. “But if you lose by one or lose by 40, it’s still a loss. You just have to move on. It’s not like football where we have to wait a week. So we have an opportunity tomorrow.”
- The Hawks were without Al (ankle). I avoided mentioning that until now because that can’t come close to explaining how they got blasted like this.
- Like the Hawks, I can’t come up with a coherent analysis to explain this, either, so I’ll skip it and just let my blog people have at it.

This was a horrible loss. No matter how the players try to spin it. I have been a season ticket holder for almost 30 years and have never seen a loss this bad. Even when the team was winning 13 games in the season, they never lost like this. Lack of energy and passion. Disgusting.

Same ol tired excuses from the Hawks. They have been saying the same thing for years now after games like this. I know teams have bad nights but the Hawks seem to have more than the average good team. This game showed the true lack of depth. Sund and company talked about how they improved the bench but the bench still stinks. The Hawks are known to put their heads down when they get hit in the mouth and tonight was another one of those games. This is why the Hawks dont get that respect they want. And is Sund still on vacation? smdh

Let me help you out MC,
The Hawks lack a true facilitator on offense. Bibby camps on the 3 point line and the dude is extremely streaky-one week he can not miss and the other he is a liability on both ends of the floor. Jamal is very good off the p&r but only to create his own shot, not to get teammates open ones. Joe is a very underrated, highly skilled passer but his assists mainly come off of double teams and not dribble penetration.
So what teams do is clog the paint against us-this leaves guys wide open on the perimeter, but when Bibby is cold as ice and Smoove can not resist, there is a trickle down effect and when your seeing brick after brick and your defense is slipping then you will occasionally have a disaster of a game like tonight.
Do not get me wrong, the effort was atrocious. Even when the game was competitive we were getting dominated on the glass and settling for too many jump shots, so it was only a matter of time before our will were broken.
Which brings me to my point-we need a true facilitating point guard. The problem is we can not and should not give up our core. Steve Nash seems like the perfect fit, but I do not know what it would take to pry him from Phoenix. Maybe Jamal’s expiring contract, Zaza(an affordable big man still with some upside), and a first rounder.
In summary, without a facilitating PG that can penetrate and create offense this team will be forced to settle for the 3 point shot when teams clog the paint. Other options would include pushing the tempo and getting more fast break baskets or going back to the old iso joe offense and posting up Joe on the wing or creating a mismatch by moving Smoove up to the SF and post him up against a smaller defender to command a double team. Regardless, an adjustment has to be made and that is what LD has been doing well all year so I am not worried whatever happens…….

Did JJ say he doesnt care if fans show up for the next game?
My issue with the Hawks is I dont think these losses bother any of them the way it should. (imo) None of the players will lay into their teamates and get them mad about their performance, nobody to show consistent leadership. And too many excuses.
And then they will come out and beat Charlotte tomorrow night, and pretend like everything is fine.

“We couldn’t make shots and we just panicked,” L.D. said. “We just lost our composure. Then we had defensive breakdowns and the game just slipped away from us.” Slipped away!!! Getting beat by 14 points is the game slipping away. Getting beat by 41 shows a total lack of preparation and effort. When have, this season, Boston, Orlando, Miami, LA or San Antonio loss a game by 41 points or even close to that. If you want to call yourself an elite team, you have to play like one.
I don’t know who is next, but if the players don’t come out an put the beatdown on them, they will have shown a lack of intestinal fortitude. You don’t have games like this if you are a contender. The coaches make adjustments to the game plan and if players don’t follow them, they end up on the bench. Most of all, you turn up the defense to slow the other team down and work basic plays to get shots and get your groove and confidence up. None of this happened in the game.
This is most unfortunate as I believed that the Hawks, after the Miami game were starting to turn things around and make a statement. Although this is only one game, it is one game they should not have had.

This team sucks. They might be very talented but they just suck as a team. I don’t get it, this team has peaked but they can’t go backwards because they are too far in terms of being cap-tied. They can only go forward. Do what you can to get Melo and Nene in a packaged deal with Smoove and Marvin.

Way to go Hawks!!!!
You go and beat Miami, then you get whooped by NO! HOW??????? It’s all about coaching and having the right mentality.
We need a new coach! We need a new GM! We need a new LEADER!
Keep Smith, Horford, Wilkins, Crawford and Collins!
Trade Johnson to New York for Gallinari!
Trade Bibby and Williams to Charlotte for Livingston and Tyrus Thomas.
Trade Zaza, Teague and Evans to Minnesota for Brewer.
Starting Lineup:
PG-Livingston/JC2
SG-Crawford/Wilkins
SF-Gallinari/Brewer
PF-Smith/Thomas
C-Horford/Collins
Now you have a hungry young core who are willing to die for each other an NO pretty boys who are inconsistant.
Come on now, make it happen!

If this team doesn’t play with passion, they don’t beat anyone. We barely squeaked out a victory over the Kings at home, after sleepwalking through three quarters. Would have been tough to beat a hot Hornet team anyway, but this kind of lay down effort is the last thing I expected after the Miami game.
The Hawks are hands down the most schizophrenic team in the NBA.

FIRE LARRY DREW! There’s too much talent on this team to forgive a loss like this. If we aren’t going to have a leader on the court, then we need a leader in coaching. One or the other. We can’t have a team without a player who is willing to lead AND an impotent coach. Take all the starters out and let the bench play for one entire game and see how quickly Smith will stop whining and start playing like a man.

1) i think zaza pachulia is more efficient than jason collins and the stats prove it.
2) i have concluded that the hawks play poorly in the playoffs because of playing their starters too many minutes which is not a surprise.
3) also id rather have atlanta develop the bench and have our starters ready for the playoffs than spending all the energy we have one a top seed and end up going home early. or another 7 game series.

It’s past time to shake up the roster. Nash could save our season, energize the fan base and make us dangerous in the playoffs. Bibby can finish his career at home and Marvin could be mentored by Grant Hill. It’s a win/win/win.

I’ve played in a game like this, when we were supposedly a good team back in high school. Actually, we were ranked 10th in the state, then got blasted by 31 points by a team supposedly inferior to us. We couldn’t do anything right that night. The next day, coach briefly talked about the game, told us to forget about it, and we won 10 in a row before losing in the State tournament.
It is what it is. Ish happens.
It just proves that while we can survive without JJ ( because of Jamal’s scoring ability ) . . and we can survive without Smith ( because Horford can slide to PF ) . . we are extra vulnerable without Horford ( because both Zaza and Collins are below average centers ).
No excuse for losing to ANY TEAM by 40 points. But the lack of depth at center really came to a head tonight.

The Hawks players should be seriously thinking about their professional integrity. You can’t get beaten by forty points and be considered worthy. Yet, there are comments about how everyone has nights like this.
Wrong.
Only bad teams or schizophrenic good-and-bad teams get beaten by 40 points and only score 59 points.

Once again, totally disagree with your analysis……..You won’t find San Antonio, Boston, Dallas, LA, Orlando, etc, etc beaten by 40 points and just claim, heh, heh it happens. No, this is seriously whacked!
I mean, you write with some fluidity. Try using common sense to go along with that. Your old high school basketball team has nothing to do with a professional team I’ve followed for the past 55 years.

Scoop made some very enlightening comments about the root cause of the problem — no penetrating, facilitating PG on the roster! You nailed it my man!
I would add that it would be great if that PG in question had the foot speed and quickness to stay in front of his man on defense and stop the dribble penetration by the opposing PG. I attended the MLK gm and studied very carefully Bibby — he is the weak link of the entire Hawks defensive scheme. No Teague that game so Hawks on the floor are forced to compensate for Bibby’s inability to keep his man out of the lane.
Steve Nash would be a nice get, but at 36 yrs of age, he is a stop gap. The guy I desire for Sund to get — 27 yr old Devin Harris! 17 pts, 8 assts per gm with speed and quickness!
Sund, you can save your precious “core” AND make this team better with 1 significant trade — find a way to become the 4th team in the Nets-Nuggets-Pistons trade that delivers Melo to Brooklyn Nets! Yes you must give up Jamal’s expiring contract, Teague, a #1 pick and maybe even Zaza — but you can net Devin Harris (Nuggets don’t need him; they have Ty Lawson) and 25 yr old 7-footer Johan Petro (hell, I know you love him Sund, since you drafted him approx 7 yrs ago in Seattle as a 1st rounder!).
Would love some feedback from the fellow Hawks fans on this thought process and problem-solving trade proposal!
Glad I didn’t see in person or watch on TV this debacle! Hope they have a completely different result on Sat nite. If no big time PG on other team, Hawks r good. But if they face any team with an elite penetrating PG, all bets are off on how bad the Hawks will look!

Would have rather read a quote from a player saying, “We played like @@#@$ tonight. I played like #^$%& tonight. I apologize personally to the fans, and promise that I will do whatever I have to do, so that this kind of loss is never seen again.”
Instead, I hear: it’s “discouraging”, “you really can’t explain it”, “you have games like this”, and “it’s one loss”.
Don’t make excuses. Show me you have pride and passion, and that this type of game really eats you up inside on a personal level. I think that’s what any fan wants to see, players that are just as passionate as they are about the game, and the team.

Sam’l . . like I said . . it is what it is.
This time next week, people won’t even be talking about this game.
If it makes everyone feel better, Drew could’ve put the starters back in against the Hornets 2nd team, and we’d “only” lost by 25 or so.
The Heat lost by 30 last week. Boston lost games by 20 points or more about 4 times last year. Even the Lakers last year lost games by more than 25 points.
The only reason we lost by 41, is because our bench is sorry, and the young kids aren’t efficient scorers even in scrub time.
So on a night in which Horford and Marvin can’t go . . JJ and Jamal play subpar games . . Bibby ( one of our best shoooters ) can’t make a shot . . Collins gets ejected on a BS call . . and the Hawks bench plays like, well, the Hawks bench . . excuse me if I don’t freak out over a fluke loss.

There isn’t much to say about this loss, but this.
Our bench is extremely subpar, but then again who was the bench the guys that sit at the end of it played a total of 26 mins those 3 that I’m talking about are Josh Powell, Damien Wilkins, and Etan Thomas. So can’t really blame them because they didn’t have much impact in the game.
So that really leaves 9 players that actually impacted the game the two young ones, and everyone else. In all honesty I don’t think you could blame Teague or Jordan Crawford for this loss. I mean what did you honestly expect them to do against the hornets when we were down by that much. I know Teague is suppose to be the PG and everything, but he can’t be superman saving the hawks sorry butts with games like this when he still hasn’t seen much PT. Jordan Crawford tried they both did that’s all you can ask from them.
For that I applaud them.
Now onto the real problem why the heck did Maurice Evans even get 34 mins of PT that’s the obvious question. What was LD seriously thinking out there he made himself look like WOODSON out there I swear it’s like the guy is somewhere in the crowd saying “I told you so.”
All this game showed to me is that it’s time to part ways with a few players Mike Bibby has now made himself trade bait in my book. Mo Evans has got to go why is he still here? We need more big bodies Zaza is soft as a melted marshmallow he needs to be traded away as well. Come on man 24 mins on 1-2 shooting got to do something. Then again that’s more of LD’s fault
The jury is about close this case with LD and it seems that LD is nothing, but Woodson with the offense that’s it cause there is no defensive fire in the team at all and his subbing methods are the same as woodson. First off the bench JC1 then Zaza the only thing that’s different is Jason Collins inserted into the starting line-up.
What the freak happened to calling people out for poor play yeah Bibby was 0-7 shooting in only 19 mins, but I bet he won’t do anything about it. What about Josh he was 5-12 bet most of that was missed jumpers, but will he tell him stop shooting jumpers or else? Probably not.

@TRADE THE
THRASHERS!!!! IN
TEAM DEAL
I like part of your trade scenario. However, I doubt very seriously that the ASG will be willing to take on JJ,JS and Carmelo salaries.
How about trading JJ, JS and Jeff Teague to Denver for Carmelo and Ty Lawson. We get rid of JJ’s ridicuous salary and JS’s bad attitude and bonehead decisions. Denver get’s two players…….1 who can block shots, rebound and a player who can shoot from the perimeter.
Now we have a true facilitator(Lawson) and a smart player(Carmelo) who can score and rebound. All we need now is a true future center. I got one! His name is Keith Benson. He’s 6′11 225lbs He has a wingspan(7-foot-2 roughly)
Benson is the real deal. He gives the hawks something they’ve never had since they moved to Atlanta…..a center who can score and defend. This young man is amazing. He had 7 blocks in one game and 6 in another game. He average 3.6 BLK , 10.2 Reb and 17 PPG.
He helped his team(Oakland Golden Grizzlies) defeat Tennessee 89-82 this season. He scored 26 pts, 10 Rebs and 2 blks. Against Mich St in a lost1(77-76) but he scored 17 pts, 12 Rebs and 4 blks. He hawks need to draft this young man.
Check him out.

I don’t give a damn about who was injured! That was a disgusting performance on any level except pee-wee Basketball. This was the exact same team that lost to Orlando in round 2 in the play offs. De Ja Vue … De Ja Vue!
This is a prelude, a snap-shot of things to come and a total lack of character Loss. Just three blogs ago, these guys were talking about RESPECT?
What about Self I Respect?

In what world does the guy who said that – Live In? A contender would NEVER have a game like this!
“Our shots weren’t falling and they made shots.”
Then stop shooting and play some damned DEFENSE!
____________________
The Bench came out there and grabbed their ankles! Is that how you stay ready when your ‘nimber’ is called? Is that how you step up when a key starter is injured? There is no bench – beyond Jamal, who began the 2nd half as a starter!
This team has no depth and too many tweeners, and they said:
“We have options, with a smile.”. What options? I didn’t see any?

These are also the type of games we will see from the Hawks in the playoffs, when the pressure is on and jump shots are not falling. Until we get a point guard or a small forward who can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim consistently, the roster will remain flawed.
……………………
I read this on the last blog and I have to agree with Rod.
When this team’s back is against the wall and those jumpers arent going down, we respond by continuing to brick the same jump shots that got us into the mess.
We need some guys that dont mind attacking the hoop, especially when we really need buckets.
When it comes to this…Joe is too finesse, Jamal is to frail, and Marvin/Josh’s ball-handling too suspect

Scoop summed it up well. I am sick of having an offense where the PG does not push the ball. He gets the ball and quickly passes to an ISO guard (joe or jc). Then the PG simply skips to an unoccupied spot on the 3 pt line.
The other defenses in the NBA have to relax when they see that PG play.
PG’s should be the pressure point, not the easiest person to guard in the NBA.
Larry Drew’s short sighted development of a pg is horrible.

We will add the leftover players who want to play for the minimum and we will trade assets for exceptions to never be used and we will draft a player who would not have been drafted in 6 rounds of draft picks, passing up centers and other players we could have at least had hope could develop.

Gosh…we made all our perimeter shots against Utah (at their place) why can’t we make all our perimeter shots ALL the time. We shouldn’t need an inside game or a creating PG – we got a $120M SG and a 6th man of the year SG backup. All we have to do is just make those perimeter shots every game and we will win the Championship…..right?

When I look at our stats:
13 Turnovers
16 Personal Fouls
11 Assists
32 vs 55 Rebounds
That spells a total lack of defense. None of their players had a monster game with major points. They beat us like that as a TEAM. It appears we only showed up as a group. That is evident with the 29% shooting for the “game” by our HAWKS.
I don’t want to continue to pound on the team. Everyone has shown their frustration here, even MC, and this will not go away soon. Whenever you get a dubious recordbreaking performance, like the worst loss in franchise history, this stays with you a while. When you have the highest paid player in the NBA score 9 points in this loss, it stays with you for a while. Even if you say we are still in transition learning a new offense, it does not excuse playing like this.
We can all rant about this and more than anything else, it shows that we care about this team. If we didn’t this blog would not be filled with such angry posts. For us long time fans, especially those who were here when they arrived from St. Louis, even when I used to see attendance at 4400 when they played at Alexander Memorial Colisium while the Omni was being and they were having 25 win seasons, they played with more pride than they had last night.
Players, we don’t want to hear excuses, we want to hear “we got our butts whipped and the fan should have booed out performance. Practice will be different tomorrow and we are going to come out and show that we are a great team”. That is the kind of statement that keeps people backing you. When you make more in a year than most of your fans will make in 10 years or more, it is hard for us to accept this type of showing. We are the ones who use what little disposable income we have to buy your jerseys, caps and t-shirts. We are the ones who drive or catch the train downtown, pay a lot of money for tickets and snacks to cheer for you and give you our support with our signs and outrageous dress. We are the ones who give you energy when you play well. We deserved better than this.

This seasons Hawks are easy to figure out.
It’s all about the jump shot. The Hawks live or die by the jumper. If they are shooting it well, they can beat most teams. When they are on fire with it, they can beat anyone….Heat, Celtics,Magic….anyone. When they are off….they are totally clueless…it ALL FALLS APART. But whatever happens, they will keep shooting that jumper over and over and over again. They have no other game plan. I’m sure that coach has installed a different game plan but the Hawks refuse to implement it. It is hard wor. Why work that hard when you can come dfown and just fire away…and if Joe or Bibby or Jamal get hot, you have a good shot at winning. If all three are hot, game over. They look great.
If the long shots fall they win. If they don’t fall, they lose. Regardless, the most effortless way to play the game is to fire em up and hope for the best; and they will keep playing that way.. It will get them to one and done.
They will not win without 1. new star blood, and 2. A much stronger HC willing to bench ANYONE who does not follow the game plan. None of this will happen without new owners. C’est la vie.

Our bench isn’t going to bring us out of any pit the core puts us in. It is the core or bust! Sund himself tells you that.
What a perfect night to throw Teague into the lineup and give him some trips. Will he disrupt the tempo of LD’s offense if he gets rotational minutes?
To the core: Its alright fellas, don’t apologize. Its not your nature to explain why you weren’t prepared. You thought you could go out there and just scrimmage with CP3. He took it to you, point blank.

From listening to Sund on 680 last week, he will consider this season ultra successful if we win 54 games, and win at least 1 game in the second round of the playoffs. In essence, he said that as long
as we improve upon last year, we are on the right path. He said nothing about seriously planning to contend for the eastern conference or NBA championship.this year. Depending on our seeding, don’t be suprised if we exit the playoffs in the first round. We are a “Jekyll and Hyde” team.

I follow up my last comments with a book I have been reading for a while. The Pistol details the life of the Maravich family and how Pete became an iconic figure of his generation.
The kid simply was a magician and driven to succeed. I can’t imagine how great he would have been had he not had distractions along the way.
He came here to this city to make it to the big time. He took less money and less guarantees to start in Atlanta and the guys he was surrounded by were already battle tested:
Walt Hazzard, Sweet Lou Hudson, Walt Bellamy ‘Bells’ and they started out on old Alexander Memorial. The city was born and the Pistol was going to put it on the major map in the NBA. His signing sparke the way for a new arena and the Hawks were ignited in Atlanta.
The team brought here was not an expansion team, but a team capable of battling the Lakers and Celtics on a regular basis. Marty Blake was our GM and he knew his basketball.
Just knowing the Pete was going to play brought excitement to the city.
I was 10 years old when I first heard about the Pistol and he was an idol to all the kids learning the game watching him. I’m not saying that he was a team player by any means, but the vibe of him playing was worth the price. Quite possibly, his arrival also brought with it the downward spiral that the Hawks have had ever since.
And we traded Bill Russell just before the move, and let Zelmo Beatty walk to the ABA. There was some talent in this organization and the potential to become what we all hope for, ‘elite’, slipped away.
The closest thing to that since: the era of Dominique. We are still trying to get back to that level of competitiveness.
So going forward, we see the demeanor of Joe, the bore of Sund, and pieces that have been with each other long enough to know how to win.
The opportunity is now, but there needs to be a change or 2 to better the chances. As we stand now, we have no idea what we are getting night in night out. True?

Crap, crap and more crap. They don’t have a team (just a bunch of individuals), and they don’t have a coach to motivate the players to get off their lazy duffs and put some effort. Joe Johnson just got a gazillion dollars (super star pay), and this is the outcome?, where’s the leadership for that kind of money.

The Hawks are a joke, a bunch of knuckleheads that won’t listen, put effort out only when they feel like , I had to laugh at the media in the Miami game -the Hawks blew a 14 point lead, Heat had Bosh out and James on a gimpy ankle, shot awful (not due to the Hawks defense ) and they make it out like the Hawks won the NBA championship!!!???. One sequence was typical -Heat player comes up throws the ball one way player was cutting the other, next trip up Heat player dribbles ball off foot with no pressure on him announcer rants “Hawks playing great defense” WTF ????

coaches, players and managment can not just blow off this game. Bottom line is that the team had no energy (NO was on a back to back and Hawks last game was Tuesday). They were dominated on the boards. No movment on offense. These guys were going through the motions. You have to make changes after this. Also look at the blowout loss to Houston at home and the lucky W vs Sacramento at home. This loss is a real nightmare. Everyone is responsible including players, coaches, managmenet and owners. OK slim, I’ve told you twice, but you don’t see it yet. Neither does cdog.
Mike Gearon, Jr. thinks we have a great core. Rick Sund is a puppet who will NOT do anything unless the owners TELL him to. We are f_cked as long as we have this ownership group.
The only glimmer of hope is that a few more godawful games like last night and maybe, just maybe, Gearon starts to doubt the core.
Otherwise, all of this wailing and gnashing of teeth is a useless exercise.
But hey, if it makes you guys feel better to vent, have at it. But know that things are not likely to change. So vent at the ownership. They are the ones who have tied Sund’s hands.

LOL Ant.
It’s crazy isn’t it?
I remember when Boston was getting destroyed at home by the Wizards back in April last year. Some of the Boston faithful did the same thing . . freak out and act like the entire season was lost right there. That’s the game where KG said something to the fans booing him as the C’s were leaving the game.
The Celtics acknowleged that they played bad. KG eventually apologized to the fans for his actions. And they went on to make a run to the NBA Finals.
Now I’m not saying that the Hawks are going to do that. But I’m not going to act like a 40 point home loss is indicitive of what kind of team we are. Especially a game in which we don’t have Horford, arguably our MVP this year.
Truth be told, you’d see this same reaction from the fans, had we lost by 10. Because they’d say that this game proves that we’re not ready for the “big time teams” . . even though we just beat Miami on the road.
Hell . . even Orlando lost by damn near 30 earlier this year.
Ish happens. Even to good teams.
I’m not under the illusion that we’re “elite” by any stretch of the imagination. I didn’t think it after the Miami win at all.
One good win or one bad loss does NOT make or break a season. It’s what you do over the long haul that counts.

LOL @ PUBLIX….sure they will be hungry..but they wouldnt win that many games…that lineup would probably get 25 to 30 wins @ the most….
Here is a better scenario….
The hawks must change their persona with the focus on getting consistent players…now i know thats hard to find in the nba..but with the right moves i think the hawks can become a more consistent team….
First I say we trade AL HORFORD straight up to Minnesota for KEVIN LOVE
and trade JOSH SMITH , MARVIN WILLIAMS, and 1st round pick to DENVER for CARMELO and CHRIS “Birdman” Anderson..
I think we need to trade MIKE BIBBY JEFF TEAGUE, an MO EVANS to PHOENIX for STEVE NASH
Finally trade JOE JOHNSON and ZAZA to Cleveland for RAMON SESSIONS , Daniel Gibson, and Anderson Varajao…
Line Up
PF – KEVIN LOVE
SF- CARMELO ANTHONY
C- ANDERSON VARAJAO
SG- JAMAL CRAWFORD
PG – STEVE NASH
BENCH
PF- CHRIS ” BIRDMAN” ANDERSON
SF- DAMIEN WILKINS
C – TWIN COLLINS
SG – JC2
SG – DANIEL GIBSON
PG- RAMON SESSIONS
SF/PF – JOSH POWELL
SCRUBS
C – ETAN THOMAS
SG/PG – PAPE SY

Indy . . that team would be 5 – 10 games worst than the current Hawks or Denver Nuggets. That’s an offensive team that would have major trouble stopping anybody.
And Kevin Love is not better than Al Horford. Kevin is a better rebounder. Al is a more efficient scorer and a far better defender.
Melo isn’t playing good defense . . nor will Nash . . nor will Jamal . . nor will Varejao ( seeng that he’s out for the season ) . . and that bench? LOL.
That’s a 44 win team at best that gets bounced in Round 1.

Northcyde, at least KG apologized. Do the fans of Atlanta ever get an apology from this team? They truly don’t think they have to answer to anyone.
I think they have been together too long if you ask me.
- Thibs goes to Chicago and has them ahead of us 1/2 way into his 1st year.
- Miami is above us and they have been a team 1/2 of the year.
- Boston and Orlando continue to lead us despite any moves they make. They are still better.
This team isn’t going to be any better than Sund put it. He wants to compete, stay below the cap, and answer to the puppet master that is the ASG.
The Thrashers situation can’t be one that helps us going forward. This ownership group is going to be so for revenue sharing considering they state they have lost money for multiple years.
KDogg, we are 5th as of today. Should we be higher? You bet we should. We have had the same core for years now….we should be on the Celtics backdoor looking to knock it down…..

Everyone can complain all day long, but nothing will change until the ownership change. We have owners that purchased this team for the wrong reasons. The owners have no money to move forward, have you all been reading about them in the news lately? Too many investors and not owners! There is a difference u know.

People are saying that the Spurs, Lakers, Heat, Celtics, etc. would never allow a team to beat them by 41, and that’s correct. But the Hawks are not on the same level as those teams. Sure, they can beat all of them on a given night, but they don’t have the star power of those teams.
The Hawks are what they are. They’ll win 50 games and have nights where they look like a title contender, and other nights (like last night) where they look like the worst team in the league. That’s because they have solid talent, but not elite talent, and they still have questionable leadership.
I didn’t get too excited over the win over Miami, and I’m not going to get down over the loss to New Orleans. It’s just typical Hawks.

the LAKERS have all 3, which is rare.

I would agree with you if this was just one game.
However this outcome reflects a pattern for the core of this team.
Look at the “great” 2008 playoff series versus Boston we lost by an average of 25 in that series.
The playoff series in 2009 against the Cavs, we lost by an average of 18ppg.
Last years playoff series versus the Magic we lost by an average of 32ppg.
Last season’s regular sesson series versus the Magic we lost by an average 16ppg.
Then there was last nights 41 point loss that contiues the pattern for the core of this team.
The fans can deal with losses, but to not compete is unacceptable.

That was a bad loss last night. I really think a problem of the Hawks is they play to the level of their competition.
One thing I would like to point out is the fact of the matter is can you win or better yet do you feel the Hawks can get to the Eastern Conference finals with this group as currently constituted? It seems the fans and management have different ideas for what is considered a sucessfull season. Seems management wants to get to 2nd round not embarass themselves and the fans want conference finals or further.
Another thing I will say watching this hawks team since the early 80;s, this team doesnt have a personality. I dont think this team excites the fans . The players are quiet mellow somewhat nondescript which is fine but I always feels Atlanta likes a player or a team with some swagger that can back their talk up kind of like the pistons of the 80’s or even the Nique Atlanta teams. Even when the Nique teams battled the Celtics or Pistons or even Bulls in playoffs you got a buzz in the arena, you felt that the Hawks had somewhat of a chance and the games were competitive. I dont get that with this Hawks team ever outside of when they played Boston a few years ago.
And all have make a good point about the point guard needs an upgrade. Hawks are much better if they had a point guard that could push the ball so the Hawks can run. The problem is management is fine with going to the second round every year and not embarass themselves and that is fine when you are starting to build a team for the first year or two like when they played the celtics to seven games but it has been i believe year 5 with this group has to be eastern conference finals or better. 2nd round in the playoffs losing in 6 games or 7 isnt to me acceptable. This isnt a rebuilding team this is a team to win now. Thoughts?

Did the Heat not play good, or did the Hawks compete and play very good defense?
Chris Bosh may not have played, but neither did Marvin, and Al missed the entire 2nd half.
So D-Wade scores 27 points, LBJ dropped 34, EHouse gave them 15, and Chalmers game them 13, plus they held the Hawks under 100 with an overtime period, but the Heat didn’t play well. Lol. That’s funny.

Geemack,
Actually, we lost by an average of 25 ppg to Orlando in the playoffs, but I see your point. This core group has had some real bad losses together.
Its like once they get knocked in the mouth, more often than not, they hang their head, tuck their tail between their legs, go sit on the bench and just wait for the next game.
We need more passion, more fire, more leadership, more intensity on the court.

We lost both games in Charlotte last season. One by 20 (Charlotte was 11-18 from 3), and one by 9.
In the first game, Bibby had 2 pts, 3 assists in 20 minutes, while Teague had 4 pts, 3 assists in 20 minutes.
In the second game, Bibby did not play, and Teague had 9 pts, 6 assists in 22 minutes.
However, Felton is gone, and so is Rajah Bell. I know that we are mising Al (I’m not sure we’re missing marvin), but I think the Hawks win tonight.
They have played well on the second game of back to backs, and after last night’s embarrassment, they will start out focused (imo).

You know after last nights game maybe Marvin isn’t so bad lol.
Seriously I’m beginning to think we need to blow this roster to ashes and start over with Al Horford being the person we keep. We have no choice with JJ so he stays back as well.
Jordan Crawford can stay and so can Teague( if he got the correct teaching he’ll be on point with at least Westbrook).
We need a new coach forget Larry Drew he’s Woody 2.0 with the offense which makes you wonder why we stalled all the time last year.
Trade everyone else maybe keep around Collins and Pape Sy(don’t know much about him yet). Still everyone else is gone in my book.

Geemack . . people just tend to overreact to everything around here . . good or bad.
Why even bring up the 2008 team, a team that was expected to get swept by the mighty Celtics, and had only won 37 games total ( 12 on the road ). We weren’t even supposed to last 5 games, let alone 7.
2009 . . the entire team had nagging injuries, ( including Horford, who had gotten hurt midway in the Miami series, and Marvin, who was probably playing at 40% – 50% )
2010 . . Orlando simply had our number all year, sans one game.
It all goes back to 2 things.
1) our star players just aren’t as good as people hype them up to be ( talking about JJ, Al, and especially Josh, whom people think is a top 3 PF in the league, by the way they hype him up )
and 2) our bench is below average ( horrible, if you remove Jamal )
So when the starters have a bad game, the only person that steps up on occasion to pick up the slack, is Jamal. And if he isn’t able to carry the team somewhat, we can definitely get blown out.
We don’t have a Big Baby Davis . . or a Lamar Odom . . or a Dejuan Blair . . or even a Kurt Thomas to bring off the bench in the frontcourt, in the event if Al or Josh are out.
So when Al or Josh are out, JJ, Bibby, and Jamal have to play lights out. If they don’t, who is going to step up?
Zaza?
Powell?
Collins?
Teague?
I’m not making excuses for those guys. I’m just being realistic. It would be totally different if we had Shaq and Josh on the frontline. Teams would have to still account for Shaq, which would make life easier for Josh and our guards.
Just don’t act like this team is supposed to play at a high level if one of our main guys are out. You guys KNOW that the Hawks are nowhere near as talented as that.
It doesn’t excuse a 40 point loss, but people should easily see how it could happen if other “core” guys are off their games.

That was certainly a 1st class butt whipping last night. I wonder how many fans of other teams would whine, complain, b!tch, and generally show so little appreciation for its players and team, especially one that’s likely headed for its:
1-2nd consecutive 50+ win season,
2-3rd consecutive finish as a top 4 seed team.
3-4th consecutive playoff appearance,
4-3rd consecutive 2nd rd apprearance
5-2nd consecutive season with mulitple All stars and 6MOY.
And they’ve managed to accomplish this despite losing 4 of 5 starters and the reigning 6th MOY to injuries. I recently read a post that said one win against Miami doesn’t prove anything. However, in their minds one blowout loss against the Hornets appears to be more than enough proof to fuel their negative minded thinking towards the Hawks.
ONE SHOULD NEVER MEASURE SOMEONE BY HOW MANY TIMES THEY FALL, BUT BY HOW MANY TIMES THEY GET UP. Even with the same starting lineup, and virtually the same roster, the Hawks have done a pretty good job of getting up over the last 3yrs, and they’ll do it again.

And last night was definitely a game in which we could’ve used Marvin in. He can play PF . . and if Drew goes small, we can even get away with Smith playing center for a short stretch.
But we were without 2 of our starting frontcourt, and had to rely on Collins to play bigger minutes?
Just be realistic about the Hawks guys and gals. No way in hell are we good enough to play at a high level, with 2 of our top 7 guys out . . who happen to be 2 of our best 3 frontcourt players.
JJ, Smith, and Jamal would have to play extremely well, and we’d have to get good defense out of everybody, to get wins.
Makes no sense to freak out over a horrible loss, when you know we were shorthanded in the first place.

We all knew what this team was coming into the season, and the last two games have proven it. At their best, they can hang with the league’s elite, but at anything less than their best, they are nowhere near being an elite team. No team, even during the playoffs, can sustain playing at their very best every minute of every game, and the result of this is going to be another 50 wins and another first- or second-round playoff exit.
My expectation for this team is to improve upon last year; in other words, make it to the second round and don’t get embarrassed after getting there.
And please make the Nash trade before the deadline. The Hawks haven’t had a good point guard since I was in middle school.

Jeff Teague gets no practice against great PG’s. Bibby and Jamal guard him in practice. When then want him to go out against Chris Paul and Jarrett Jack cold, after some DNP’s, and get mad when Paul steals the ball. Of course! I would play Teague against every great PG, and get his feet wet.
Or we can just have Bibby stand at the 3 pt. line and hope he connects when the ball comes his way.
I would start Jeff Teague the next 10 games and forget about it. It may transform this team. But we’ll never know, unless it’s done.

The Hawks don’t have any real depth. They have had chances to add some nice players to the bench but for whatever reason they went in a different direction…. The thing I miss about Flip is that he would put his head down and drive to the hole and draw contact. We just don’t have that type of player on this team and it hurts us. When the jumpers aren’t falling then this team gets down large in a hurry. Instead of attacking the rim when the jumpers dont fall they continue to jack up more jumpers…Another thing I don’t like is when they do get down they usually give up and just go through the motions… Its a shame that the players don’t get frustrated or mad about a L like this. They just give off the usual tired cliche… These guys have been together so long that they seem to just be stuck with their bad habits. Since their is no accountability they just keep doing it. Its time to shake up this roster but I doubt a game like this will open up Gearons eyes that this team has peaked.

TERRELL-whether it’s by 1 or 41, it still only counts as one(1) loss. The Hawks are 1-1 on this back to back, and the margin doesn’t matter in the ultimate outcome, unless you decide to dwell on it and make it an issue. Everyone knows the Hornets aren’t 41pts better than the Hawks. The Magic swept us in record fashion in last yrs playoffs, but we’re 2-1 against them this season. YOU MOVE AND THINK FORWARD, NOT BACKWARDS.
KAPOOKNA-Why should we trade away half of our team for CAnthony, who’s been unable to lead his team to the promise land, and he’s played with 2 All Star PG’s and a DPOY All Star center, just so you can say we’ve done something? Even with Melo, the Nuggets have won fewer gms than the, as you put it, MEDIOCRE Hawks.
The Hawks ability to win consistently on the road proves they’ve improved over last yr. On one hand, we have fans who say the Eastern Conference is definitely stronger and deeper, but then they turn around and say the Hawks are winning because they haven’t played anyone. WHERE’S THE DOGGONE LOGIC?

The needs: POINT GUARD AND CENTER
The answer: Marvin (7.5 millions per season 3 years left) & ZaZa (4.4 per season 2 years left) for
LAC Kaman (10.8 million per season 2 years left) both ends in 2012.
Reason: Kaman is a solid scoring/rebounding/enforcer type center (not shot blocker) when he is playing. He does get a hurt alot and is his big negative, but his positives are he’s a true center who can score and must be guarded often takes two players. Next, his contract ends after the 2012 season when ZaZa’s contract ends and LAC needs a SF maybe it’s win for both teams and players. They all need a change.
The answer: Jamal for Nash same salary – Jamal’s expires this season and Nash ends 2012. He probably has two more years in him, but the time is now for the Hawks.
The answer: Jamal and Mo for pick for Devin Harris
Issues: The Hawks must make a couple of trades to sodilify their weaknesses and truly win the fans attention and the interest of the National media. Currently, the team cannot win a playoff series against Magic, Heat, Magic, or Bulls.
