Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 93, Heat 89
12:31 am January 19, 2011, by Michael Cunningham

Hawks put up a fight against Wade's Heat. (Hector Gabino / el Nuevo Herald)
- Miami–This wasn’t the soft team L.D. described after the Hawks barely bothered to play defense against the Rockets and Kings.
- “We showed up tonight,” Drew said.
- The Hawks won at Miami for the first time since Dec. 12, 2008. It was their fifth straight road W and they know have 14 on the season, second only to the Heat’s 15.
- The Hawks improved to 4-6 in road games against teams with winning records.
- “Guys knew that this was going to be one of those games that sometimes you get measured on,” Jamal said. “It’s a good barometer. They are not fully healthy, but we aren’t either. We just had to kind of go with it.”
- The Hawks went into the Heat’s building and beat them at their rugged style. They won despite losing Al in the third quarter, facing a 29-14 deficit in free throws, Le Bron’s 34 points and 27 from D-Wade.
- They did it by continuing to grind when the Heat made one final push to force overtime.
- “You have to be able to play different styles, especially against the top teams,” Jamal said. “To win, we had to gut it out.”
- Every guy who made a mistake going down the stretch–J.J.’s bad turnover, Mo’s bad foul, Smoove’s bad shots, Jamal’s forced runners–did something later to win the game.
- “It showed a lot of heart, determination, growth and maturity,” J.J. said. “It was a hard-fought game. Their rotation on defense was phenomenal tonight. We just made the extra pass and were getting open shots.”
- The Hawks didn’t make many of them. The shot selection was suspect at times. They had lots of careless turnovers, especially in transition.
- Atlanta’s team defense, however, was spirited, physical and exceptional.
- “That is how you have to play a team like this, because they are going to force you to play like that,” Drew said. “If you don’t they are going to run you out of the building.”
- No Bosh for a team without much offensive depth to begin with certainly helped the Hawks’ cause but they made things difficult for Miami from start to finish. Miami shot a season-low 36 percent from the field.
- “I’ve been saying since I got here, when we help each other and everybody is on a string we are one of the top teams in the league,” Bibby said. “We did that tonight. We helped, and we rotated out and everybody was moving. When we are that active, we are real good.”
- Smoove, arms waving and feet moving, stalked James to all corners of the court. He helped make James a jump shooter and it paid off.
- “I thought he did a real good job against him,” Drew said. “He’s out there flapping around, but I do think his length bothers people. And he has the ability to erase a mistake when he gets beat off the dribble when someone goes to the basket.”
- At one point of the third quarter, Josh looked like he could barely stand while chasing LeBron through several screens on the perimeter. He stuck with it and LeBron eventually missed a long jumper.
- “It’s so hard to be able to guard so many re-screens,” Josh said. “You find your legs getting tired. They beat you up on the screens. But it’s all mental for me and I just fought through it. I wanted to suck it up and be able to stand up for my team.”
- Josh’s thunderous dunk over Joel Anthony late in regulation gave the Hawks a jolt and quieted the crowd after it looked like they would fade like last time they were here.
- “I kind of looked to the right and still saw him coming,” Smoove said. “I knew I had to finish hard because he’s a pretty good shot-blocker.”
- “We needed something to motivate and energize us,” L.D. said. “That gave us a little life. Everything we got tonight we really had to earn. We needed something to spark us and Josh came up with the big play.”
- It was clear early that J.J. was locked in for his duel with D-Wade. He shadowed the Heat’s All-Star around the court, using his size and strength to keep him away from the basket.
- “I think Joe got us going with that,” Drew said. “Watching him those first few possessions of the game against Wade, I thought he played him with his speed and played him with a physicality and started banging around in there.”
- Joe hurt the Hawks with too much iso play in the second quarter. He also threw the ball away with Atlanta up 76-75. But then he tied it on a classic Joe move: Hesitate, dart into the lane then score on a floater.
- “I knew there was a lot riding on me,” he said. “I just wanted to come up big for the squad and somehow get it into overtime and then it’s our will against theirs.”
- The Heat was disorganized after tying it at 84-84 and Joe smartly set up Jamal for a corner 3. Jamal made it, one of his six baskets after halftime. “The last two games I wasn’t as aggressive as I would have liked,” he said. “Tonight I got back on track.”
- The Hawks needed someone other than Jamal to produce off the bench and Mo delivered. After standing in the corner and missing a wide open 3 in regulation, then compounded that error by fouling James 40 feet from the basket, Mo scored the first five points of overtime for Atlanta.
- LeBron, back after missing two games with an ankle injury, got lured into taking long jumpers. The Hawks didn’t allow him many of his devastating runs at the basket.
- “LeBron started to make some shots there toward the end, but that was a game plan we decided to stay with,” Drew said. “If we were going to give up anything, let’s give up a contested jump shot as opposed to him getting to the basket. We executed that going down the stretch in the fourth quarter and in overtime we did a great job with that.”
- Al didn’t return after suffering the sprained ankle. He wasn’t in the locker room when I got in there. “I don’t know how bad it is or if he’s going to be out,” Drew said.
- It was kind of surreal to see JC2 suddenly checking into this game late in regulation. He missed a 3-point try.

LD this statement:
“They had lots of careless turnovers, especially in transition”. Actually they had a total of 10 TO (much better than usual) vs. 16 TO for the Heat. I will admit that some of the TO were big because they were during critical times of the game but so were the Heat TO. So this statement could be somewhat misleading to people who didn’t watch the game IMO

Its all about match ups. The Heat are without a quick PG or dominant C (unlike Orlando and Boston). So the Hawks will matchup quite well with them.
I must admit LD has some huge balls putting JC2 in the game. And though it didn’t work out, I hope he’s open to doing things like that and taking chances of that nature in the future.

Larry Drew, Bibby and JC2 have all something in common. They can flat out shoot the rock! Teague cannot. Larry averaged almost 17 points a night playing the point for the kings from 81-86..He could shoot the rock. He appears to be biased against guards that cannot shoot….Just an observation from a shooting guard like myself….

From the AP game recap, apparently the Hawks are 8-4 in games decided by 5 points or fewer, while the Heat are 1-7.
Also, the Hawks are 10-3 on the second game of a back to back. Maybe it’s time to stop looking at short rest like it’s a disadvantage.

PS
LD can you take a message to the Hawks players and tell them during TV interviews to stop saying statements like “We played good tonight”, “Joe played good tonight also”. This is totally incorrect grammar on national TV representing the Hawks. First it was Bibby saying it during a previous interview, tonight it was Jamal saying it. The team played well tonight, Joe played well also for Christ’s Sake!

Here’s a thought, Rose has to do EVERYTHING for the Bulls. If he doesn’t score 25 they don’t win. Or if it takes him 25 shots to score 25 points, their chances of winning is very bad. So the question is, can Rose REALISTICALLY continue this path all the way into the playoffs? Or will he flame out in April like Joe used to do so famously?

I think he can Ra’Mon. Dude is so young, that he could definitely keep up the pace he’s going at, much like how Monta Ellis does.
The Bulls do need both Noah and Boozer healthy, to make a legit run in the playoffs. That gives the Bulls the inside-outside game in the halfcourt offense. Plus Noah ad Boozer are their 2 best rebounders.
Chicago is the wild card, because no one knows how good they’ll be when they are at full strength.

Horford says ankle is OK after leaving game
Al Horford (F/C) – Atlanta Hawks
(Wed, Jan 19 – 12:03am ET)
Al Horford said his sprained right ankle “will be (okay)” after leaving Tuesday’s game mid-way, and while he says he’s okay we’re going to call him questionable for Friday’s game until we get a report from somebody else.
As evidenced by the Marcus Camby’s teammates coming out and saying he was fine, and Camby saying he was fine, players often embellish when it comes to injuries. While it is good to hear Horford’s optimism, he was needed in a tight game against the Heat and couldn’t return to the court. Stay tuned.

McMillan could start Przybilla on Wednesday
Joel Przybilla (C) – Portland Trail Blazers
(Tue, Jan 18 – 11:57pm ET)
Joel Przybilla, who underwent major knee surgery in March after falling in the shower while rehabbing a knee surgery from last December, could become the starter in the aftermath of Marcus Camby’s knee injury according to coach Nate McMillan.
We don’t know the extent of Camby’s timetable at this time but it probably isn’t good, and it doesn’t really matter here. Przybilla had not played more than 10 minutes in any game prior to Monday night, when he played 18 minutes and had six points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. If you’re in need of a big man, he is worth a look as a stash for the hope he gets healthy and can provide a good amount of rebounds and blocks.

Great win for the Hawks. My question is why can’t we play defense like this every game? If we could play this kind of defense, we will be in every game, no matter the opponent.
We need Marvin back though, because games like this takes a lot out of JJ and Josh having to guard LeBron. Speaking of Marvin, it seems like you never hear the team say “we missed Marvin” or “we can’t wait to get Marvin back.”

As for the playoffs, injuries to other teams could make things easier for the Hawks as the season continues.
1) Miami relies so much on their big 3, if one of their guys are out, they are in trouble.
2) Boston is old, so who knows if their guys will be healthy
3) Bulls (Noah and Boozer) are injury prone
4) We have shown we can beat Orlando
Meanwhile, Hawks are closing in on the #3 seed.

I can’t fully support Wade until he returns to his unselfish ways. I have witnessed to much of his lazy D, complaining to the officials, passing up game winners, taking games off to rest fake injuries, and his lack of effort to improve his game. Plus I am still an upset fan over the way he treated Beas and how he came to camp out of shape last year. He is a tremendous talent but not talented enough for me to overlook these flaws!

The biggest problem with this team, aside from the ongoing injuries, is not having an offensive scheme to rely on imo. Even during the streaks, win or lose, its still too much playground ball. The off the ball movement is limited. Moving the ball itself ahs increased, but what good is it if nobody is moving properly without the ball? Thats not about spacing or creating, thats about tactics. The players need better designs on the floor. Wade said it best, at some point in time, the offense needs to be able to score for us, not just relying on one on one and God given talents. With LBJ and Wade on the floor, theres no reason Joel shouldnt have been able to get an easy layup somewhere in the game. Instead, we don’t run great cuts to the basket or many off the ball cuts, we just wait for LBJ and Wade to make plays for everyone and watch our big men go pick and pop. Spo has gotten somewhat better in certain areas ( hes plays after timeouts and dead balls are soooo much better, tho if u ask me Riley probably showed him a few) but he needs to sit down and understand we dont just lose because of injuries, or effort. If he installs a proper and fitting offense, be it the triangle the princeton or whatever, I dont care, then he will reach the full potential of his team, bench players and all.

Northcyde, Monta does his production in an up and down game. Rose gets his in a slow, methodical type of system that requires intense defense. I’m sure he probably can though. Its just something to keep an eye on. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them drop down to the 6th spot before the playoffs start.

Drmaryb, I know this is off subject from Camby. But I was just thinking the SA Spurs have to be the luckiest franchise in the league. A perennial playoff team’s best player goes down for an entire season, and it leads to the #1 pick in a draft that features arguably the greatest college player of the decade (or since Alcindor). That one unfortunate season of D. Robinson’s knee (I think it was his knee) lead to a decade of dynasty.

I’m happy for the win, on the road, against a top level team (despite not having Bosh) but the Hawks have to continue playing D like this on a regular basis. I really don’t see many teams in the East (sans Boston) who can hang with Atlanta when they play this kind of defense.
I really believe that this team has bought into what Larry Drew is telling them, and that goes a long way. If he can now figure out how to balance out his PG rotation (because Bibby’s gotta get some rest during this point of the season) they will obtain more depth for the playoff stretch run.

What is Marvin’s problem? That bruised back didn’t look all that serious to me, and I am a spinal specialist. He landed on his big butt for crying out loud. That is a lot of insulation back there. Is he pouting re: coming off the bench? Can he not play with some pain? No one plays at 100% – ever! He better be careful, his team is winning 9-1 last ten games without him. Marvin is very replaceable, that defense was stellar last night. Bibby and Month stepped up. Damien played great on defense too. Marvin is more trade-able than Jamal!

OB, you asked why we can’t play defense like this every night? It has to be their mental approach. They saw the Rockets and Kings as wins going into it, before they gave the effort to get a split. Giving the Kings 62 points in a half? They deserved to be chewed out.
It must be impossible to be motivated for every game, but apparently, some teams can do it?
I gotta say you know there is talent on this team, but who shows to use their talent every night is the unknown. One more big piece would make this team very formidable.
Hawks start the 2nd half of the season like they mean business. They have handled Marvin being out fairly well. Mo has had some good moments in his absence.
The Hawks held their own last night, and were able to keep the Heat on the perimeter. That team seems to want to settle for the long jumper too much. That has to change.
There were over 60 3 pointers last night….that’s a stat for 2 teams willing to settle and not battle in the lane for points. What keeps the Heat in games? They have 2 guys ranked in the top 3 in free throws attempted. That is an incredible amount of free throws.

Hawks had 14 FTs attempted, the Heat 29…that sounds normal for a road game.
Really, the Hawks should have had an easier time. That number of field goal attempts is a disparity as the Hawks actually shot better than the Heat?

Larry Drew thus far has proven to be competent.
The players have bought into his system. The
players now appear to be paying close attention
to him during the timeouts. In the past, they
appeared aloof in many instances. Drew has
appareently resigned himself to the fact that
there will not be a trade of any significance,
and is molding the current roster that he has
into what he wants it to be during the playoffs.
It was good the see the Hawks going inside
the paint with purpose and intensity during the
last minute. They should make this more of a habit.

The Vols and Georgia? That was a decent no call…them ‘em play, the ball never touched the goal, so Williams was wise enough to reach for it, unlike Barnes, who stayed flatfooted not knowing where the ball was.
Big win for the Vols and that tightens up the SEC East that much more. No one is running away with it this year. My Cats have a challenge on their hands this year with the improved talent in the SEC. Bama played very well last night for the most part.
How would sharpshooter Brandon Knight look on the Hawks’ roster? He doesn’t have it figured out yet, but he is going to get it together under Cal.

If Joe goes 4 for 20 no-one says stop shooting.
Josh has improved his shot so much that he does not need to stop,
but he does need to “-THINK-” ! Not during his shot but before he even catches the ball. Time, spot on floor, situation, etc.. Six inches inside the arc = bad shot.
One other note…Josh has returned to launching rather than his
newfound jumper from this summer. He needs to watch some videeo and
whomever is the shot Coach needs to have a refresher course. Kinda
like a hitter – he’s in a slump and it’s fixable.

As I mentioned yesterday;
he’s 2nd on our team ((+/-).
He is to us what Derek Fisher is to the Lakers.
Think about Josh’s dunk last eve:
It was the spark that most likely put us over the hump.
Who delivered the assist pass? Bibby of course.
And it was no “run o’ the mill” easy pass.
Difficult angle, bounce pass, delivered beautifully.
At the beginning of the year, I couldn’t imagine that I would be
typing these words. I was ready to trade MB ASAP. However, I’m
coming around. And I’ve always admired D.Fisher. Bibby is in better
shape is playing better defense (he plays defense with his head/brain)
and because he is in better shape [legs] his shot is superb.
All we need is a tough hard nosed defender @ pg to spell him.

drmaryb – for someone who loves logic so much, how can you say that a big part of why Joel Anthony had 16 rebounds is because Al got injured, when in fact Anthony had 5 boards in the first alone (meaning he was on pace for 20 after 1 quarter of play) and 9 total all before Horford’s injury?

I like Bibby also. He had a lot to offer a team. He is a deadly shooter. He is a steadying influence. But he is limited. Therefore, he should be a role player. He is bad a defense and bad at pushing the ball and penetrating. He simply is not very athletic in a sport that has the best athletes in the world.

Ra’mon, dmb,
Imagine how different things might have been if the Celtics had gotten the #1 pick and Tim Duncan. I think Rick Pitino was looking forward to coaching him in Boston.
KevinM,
The numbers (10-3 on second nights of back to backs) suggest that when the Hawks are a little tired, they play with more focus. Maybe thats why LD doesnt mind playing them so many minutes in the first game of a back to back.
Win or lose, one of the things I give LD credit for. There is an offensive system in place, that if executed correctly, should lead to a decent shot for the Hawks (although playing a good defensive team makes it a more difficult shot).

Najeh – Co-sign about back to backs with this team. They seem to play better with less rest.
Rip Hamilton has been benched the last 4 games. If LD won’t play Teague, I wish Sund and the capologists could get the numbers to work for a Teague/Rip trade. But I don’t see a way with the cap/trade rules it can happen.
We can’t even do Duhon for Teague with the rules… We could do Teague/Mo’ for Duhon. But I’m not a big Duhon fan.
Great Win!!!! Go Hawks!!! Play Jeff Teague!!!
Remember, Jordan came in before Teague a few games ago in the 4th. I wondered then if JC2 had not leapfrogged Teague in LD’s mind. Last night showed he might have.

If a person is geared to finding something to complain about, I’m certain last nights gm will provide something to focus on. But for everyone else, this was the kind of gm this team has always been capable of playing. It just proves that our TEAM DEF issues have less to do with personnel or ability, and more to do with a lack of proper attitude and committment.
GREAT GAME AND GREAT WIN HAWKS!!!!!!!!
Now let’s see if we can avoid approaching our upcoming gm with the same lack of energy and committment to playing DEF that we demonstrated against the Clippers. Against the Clippers we were looking ahead to Miami, and now we might be too focused on what we accomplished last night in Miami to take our next opponent seriously.

Carlos,
Your explanation is no more logical.Yes, Anthony had 5 early boards. But Horford had 9 rebounds in only 20 minutes. If Horford and Anthony had the same number of rebounds BEFORE Horford’s injury, then it would be “logical” to think they would likely split the remaining rebounds for the game, or end up with roughly the same.

Being somewhat giddy with last night’s win, I thought what if:
1.LD moved JC2 to the point and developed him into a Chauncy Billups type of PG because of his size and scoring ability. All he would need to be devloped would be leadership skills.
2.Jeff Teague was traded for Jason Thompson. the big JT is 24,6′11″,weighs 250 lbs and does play 5-was at the Kings game- and much better than the “faux center” of the hawks. What the Hawks need is a 5 who can and will protect the rim, can run the floor ,board-especially at the offensive end- and not fumble the ball when passed to wide open under the basket. The kid can do this; plus he is still under his rookie K so he is cheap(music to management’s ears)
3. Have a consistent line up that is not based on protecting ASA’s All Star status. If Josh is going to be the strting 3 then have prayer meeting with him about shot selection that includes a clearly defined offensive role that keeps his head in the game. This where Jason thompson comes in: there is another player who can protect the rim besides Josh, therefore he doesn’t have to guard his man and the rim as is the case presently.
Just some random thoughts induced my pot game euphoria.

Unfortunately, Marvin is much LESS trade-able than Jamal. JC has an expiring contract and is actually playing well, those are things teams want. Marvin is hurt, relegated to the bench and has a long contract, not an easy thing to move and get any value.

Grandad, one more comment on the UT/UGA game…..had Barnes shown some effort to go for the ball instead of pushing backwards, perhaps there would have been an OT. I have no issue with a smart play that Williams made, and Barnes isn’t getting the benefit of a bump when Williams is going for the ball. You take your chance at that point and Williams did his job.
OB, strange that the Hawks look so unenergized in front ends of a back to back instead of trying to expose the Kings’ weaknesses, which are many. They did get a good jump on the Heat last night, so they had a shot from the get-go. While good to see them hang on, we know Miami’s bumps and bruises didn’t help their cause. But that’s life in the NBA.
In a 7 game series, the Hawks have a lot of prove seeing the same lineup game after game. The desire for a 4th seed is gonna be a stretch for this team in the 2nd half.
And Pitino gambled and lost when he left Kentucky. He gave up on Chauncey as well. So much for the Pitino legacy in Boston.
Now games like last night will tell Sund that everything is fine as is….ticks me off too.

GRANDAD-Your last post proves you’re nothing but a DIRTY OLD MAN, welcome to the club.
Players that don’t have good shot blocking skills usually try to develop their man to man DEF skills. Players with good shot blocking skills tend to rely on that skill, and tend not to work on developing their man on man DEF skills.
When near the basket, Smoove seems to rely on his shot blocking skills, but when he’s away from the basket, he demonstrates very good one on one DEF ability.
I’m also a big Bibby fan, just not as our starting or Primary PG. I just think we should incorporate JTeague into the mix so that we can get more combined overall production out of both players and the position. If used properly, we should be able to reduce Bibby’s mins and still get close to his current 10PPG and 4APG production.
Teagues numbers show he could approach Bibby’s current numbers with increased mins. Consider this: BIBBY/TEAGUE
MPG-30.4/11.7, PPG-10/4, APG-4/1.8, 3FG%-.476/.357, 2FG%-.422/.476, FT%-.65/.83, FTAPG-1.0/1.1.

About this statement: “Have a consistent line up that is not based on protecting ASA’s All Star status.”
Why in the WORLD would LD try to “protect” Al’s All-Star status? And why would he even need to? Is this like one of T-S’s “conspiracy theories”?
Do you not think Al should be a starter? And if he starts, where would YOU play him, and why?
The idea that the Hawks have to (or would) juggle their lineup solely to help Horford’s All-Star status is surely one of the more bizarre ideas I’ve seen here, but perhaps you can explain.

@ DR MARYB Just becasue Jason Thompson got his shot blocked doesnt mean he is not a upgrade over Twin and Zaza. Yes he has played both forward positions and center for Sacremento. Bottom line is the kid is 6′ 11″ 250 lbs. Check his size and compare him to average centers in the league. Start with Dwight Howard.
And yes Joel Anthony got 16 rebounds last night with Al Horford out. And if Al would have played the whole game he would have got 13. LOL
My point in identifying Thompson was because we lack 2 things that wins championships. Tough interior defense and rebounding. Our opinions may vary on who we want to fill that roll but you must agree that is our problem. Again check our points in the paint and rebound stats. By the way who do you suggest to fill that roll??

Where IS the Logic?
Carlos asked this:
“drmaryb – for someone who loves logic so much, how can you say that a big part of why Joel Anthony had 16 rebounds is because Al got injured, when in fact Anthony had 5 boards in the first alone (meaning he was on pace for 20 after 1 quarter of play) and 9 total all before Horford’s injury?”
————————
Based on this flawed logic, let’s clear one thing up: Joel Anthony has NEVER had 20 rebounds in his ENTIRE life! He got four boards on one possession late in the fourth, when the Hawks had their smallest line-up possible on the floor and Josh was playing Center. Joel Anthony IS a Forward and NOT a Center.
Now, if we use your brain? Anthony had 5 boards in the 1st Qrtr, with Al playing and 4 boards in the Second. So, with Al out almost the entire 2nd half, then Anthony should have had 7 boards in the 3rd and 4th! So, he should have been on pace for 24 boards total, with Al out of the way!
____________________________
Where is Your Logic? Shouldn’t he have more than 5 boards per qrtr with Al gone? 16 boards was his CAREER high! You’ll never see that on a regular basis, Ever!

Southern Sudan has just voted for its independense from the North. Southern Sudan is Christian and has a wealth oil reserves. United States and the Obama adminstration has done a beautiful job along with the CIA creating the opportunity for the birth of a nation which will benefit the USA greatly.
Now as for the Hawks, the need for a legit Point Guard is even more paramount after last night’s game. A point would have able to drive into the lane; thus, creating more open shooting/scoring opportunaties. JJ, Jamal, Al are all good open floor jump shooters, but Josh Smith opportunaties would be greater if he were allowed to slash to the basket. The offensive stops because of the floor spacing and the inability of the PGs to create open shoots.
Nash and D, Harris are clearly available and the hawks need to be proactive.

I read a ton of scouting reports on Dalembert during the FA period this Summer and posted it on here, because his name kept coming up!
Dalembert was ran out of Philly for some serious and problematic reasons:
He is ExTREMELY lazyn and refuses to go near a basketball in the off seasons. He was reported to be a cancer in the locker room and the consummate complainer during the season. He refused to work on his game weakness and was averaging 8 pts per game. Never developed ANY post moves whatsoever from year to year. At 13M per year, the fans said,”We should give his salary to a terrorist organization than him, and it would be put to better use!”
He was a coaches night mare! They ran him out of town, when they needed a center the most!

Right now, our greater need is a True PG. I would move in that direction right now, since my desires were ignored at Center! but, hey we won – right? and, his team mates are throwing him the ball too. aye Josh! drive the ball and dunk that thang!

Nothing was available, like i said! Shaq is not lazy, just old, he dropped 25/10 last week and his team is what? 30 – 9? You got a problem with winning? Looks like Boston made out like a bandit, they only need him for 13 games come June! Shaq is not an everyday player any more.
Dampieer is a true Center, washed up and all is better than what we got! Jason Thompson is NOT a Center for the 100th time! Dalembert? You can got to Sac-Town and put him in the trunk of your Honda Accord and drive him to your basement! We don’t want his carcass here!
If you’re gonna dream? Dream Big! Why not say, go get Dwight Howard and call it a day?

I dont want Daimpeer here now. I was telling Dukester that back in the Summer I lobbied hard for Shaq and Daimpeer during FA period. But, nothing happened and we got Etan Thomas for all the fussing I did! So, I was telling Dukester I have moved on from Center Dreams and am now only interested in us getting the greater need at PG: Nash or Billups are my wishes for us now.
I told Dukester, Twin is doing good and I am like Al, when he said, “I will go to war, with what I got!”
___________________________________
That’s what I said. I don’t see any Center out there available that we can get, nor afford. That ship has already sailed a long time ago! That’s all I was saying, this morning!

Ipersonally like Jason, his uncle is my X-Ray technician here at the office. He sold me my machines and did the installation and life time service on them. So, trust me I like Jason T. My problem with him is, like AL, he is NOT a True Center. Unlike, Al he is awfully thin and frail. He is tossed around like a rag doll!. That size at Center might fly out West, but in the East?
We BANG – HARD ’round here! Dwight and Perkins would fold him up like a cheap lawn chair. Dalembert too! I’d rather have Collins with some beef and someone, who can stand there and be in the way and bother people. Somebody, you got to go around to get to the basket, not a telephone pole that you can run through! LeBron and DWade would beat him down like a mexican pinata!
That’s all I’m saying mane. Besides, we ain’t getting no Center anyways! They are like butt-holes – everybody needs one! Good ones aren’t just lying around and besides, we ain’t got no money!
Camby, just went down for surgery with meniscus tear, and opted for surgery yesterday and is gone for 3-6 weeks. Plus he cost 9M this year and 8.5M next year! Oden done for the Year, Pryszbilla hasn’t played more than 10 minutes per game since he returned and is very old. Portland need a Center worse than us and they got Three! Yao Ming’s career is over, so, Houston need a Center too.
Like I said, get in line for that dream. At least we got AL (All-Star at Center) and Twin! That might not mean much to you, but it’s more than what most teams have!
look it, we are gaining ground on the #2 spot in the Eastern Conference. We are not that bad. We are just ungrateful and love to complain after every WIN!

Fallacy:
Josh doesn’t block as many shots due to playing the [3].
The [3] is an offensive position. However, Josh has guarded the
[3] quite a bit this year.
(even though some folks on this board argued that he was incapable)
As a matter of fact, Joe has played the [3] more than most on here realize.
Last yr with all the switching Josh would end up guarding the pg sometimes ~ for crying out loud ~ and people don’t take that into consideration.
One thing opposing Coaches may be doing is having Josh’s *man
(whomever that may be) draw him away from the basket [by design].
Another thing – Josh can become a DPOY candidate by being a -GOOD-
defender and not just by blocking shots. He gets steals by getting in the passing lanes and last eve showed that he can defend the best [3]
in the game today. (points notwithstanding) LbJ was 4 for 60 FG,
and attempted 400 FT’s to get his pts.
Also Josh’s jumper probably was mis-firing somewhat due to jelly legs
from chasing LeBoink all night.
Josh is tied for 3rd within our 6 most important players.

I forgot to mention the excellent coaching job that was done by LDrew, especially a move he made in the 4th quarter. They were double teaming JJ whenever he touched the ball, and he put JoCrawford in the gm, which forced them to back off. Teams know his potential, and what he’s capable of doing.

The Hawks are a team that won in Utah by 23 and lost to the Pistons by 23. Their true identity swings between those extremes. They’re solid some nights, soft on other nights. They didn’t make any major off-season changes, besides the coach, and therefore no reason to expect the final outcome will be much different, either.
They’re built to win 45-50 games, not to beat the Big Four in the East in the playoffs.

3. Drew needs to figure ZaZa out, he’s regressed, but has so much potential…
4. Drew is doing a great job with what he has…
5. PG is still an issue…we need someone to slow Rondo, Rose, Nelson…

@ DRMARYB Well we agree to disagree you can take Daimper to your basement and I will take Thompson to mine. LOL Let’s define “true center” 7′0″ tall or 6″11″? Or is it defending the paint and tough rebounding? I will take the latter. Hey look we can go back and forth on choices of our liking to get the job done. As far as the “Horford” comment “go to war with what you got” will have us dead in the 2nd round again.
So for the record Dr mary like Dampier more than Thompson that settles it.

A True Center is more of a Proto-Type! If you could go into a laboratory with a pen and a pad? Your Center would look like Shaq in his prime!
Mammoth
Un-movable
Defend his position
Block shots
Rebound
Score (20/10 minimum)
40 + mins/per game
Plays with his back to the basket
A variety of low post moves (hooks, drop-step, dunks, base-line jumper)
10 – 12 Years service time minimum
Rugged
And, all the other teams in the League can “fuggidabout it!” Because, they ain’t NEVER gonna’ beat your team in the post! Don’t even think about penetrating the painted area.
The defense is so sick down there, the center just bends over and peel back the paint and pull out: Bricks, Chain-Saws, pickle jars, baseball bats and Nim-Chucks from under the floor, and bash anybody in the head who is dumb enough to come in there!”

I just described the Pistons “Bad-Boys” of the ’80’s! They had Mahorn and Lambieer back then. The NBA and Stern won’t let them play like that anymore. The game is soft now. But, you get the picture – Dukester!
Proto-Type Centers are NOT tweeners and PF/C players. We you see a real Center? You Know you seeing one!
I could list a hundred off the top of my head, but you already know the deal!
And, you damn sure know: Jason Thompson and Dalembert ain’t no damned Centers! Keep it Real!

Grandad, I think Josh is the most important player on this team. What he brings is not easily duplicated by anyone else on this roster (rarely even in the entire league). I don’t see us winning yesterday without Josh, that’s even with the bad shooting. We won without Al in the clutch. And we defeated Orlando twice without Joe. At the moment, Josh is not only the teams best defender, but he’s also arguably the teams best facilitator. He often creates shots for other players as much as anyone else on the team. Josh is the only player on the team who can have a great game while shooting 25-30%. While he have his flaws. He’s still been the player with the most production in the post season the last three seasons. The problem is a catch 22. The only way we could ever see Josh real value, is by the Hawks playing a few games without him. And we all know it would take a very serious injury for that. Because when it comes to injuries, Josh heals like Wolverine, lol.

Since the Hawks have demonstrated a reluctance, or unwillingness, to commit to developing JTeague, at least to this point, is it an indication of their intent to pursue a PG by the trade deadline? I was recently on a site that listed the top 10 players they felt needed a change of scenery, and/or are likely to be be traded.
The list contained 3 PG’s, BDavis, DHarris and JCalderon, and they suggested a potential JaCrawford for Calderon trade. Either JCalderon or DHarris would be a big upgrade over Bibby. However, a combination of either, plus Bibby off the bench, would definitely be a very leathal combination, especially for the playoffs. What do you think?

slimjr, Please explain the unwillingness of our nation leaders to drill for oil in your boundaries. Offshore drilling is clear now as to Why NOT, but us understand the reasoning for not taking advantage of this opportunity. Oh yeah, the Hawks need to trade for one of the above mentioned PGs. After the Nets/Nuggets trade happens, I do believe that the Hawks will package Marvin, Mo, ZaZa, # 1 pick and/or Teague or some combination of in order to obtain Devin Harris. I think we stand pat on moving somebody for another big man.

You can call it GREED,PROFIT,THE LOVE OF MONEY…If we start drilling into that 8 thousand year reserve(Green River Formation/Worlds largest known oil reserve), I guess the gas companies could not rip us off any more??
You do realize diamonds aren’t as rare as they taught you in school.. Production is massively reduced thereby artificially inflating the retail price. Same game played at the retail gas pump..Look it up..

TRUTHSPITTER-A JaCrawford($10.8M)for DHarris($8.9M)trade works salary wise without us having to add anything else to the deal. With an upgrade like him at PG, and with both Bibby and Teague available off the bench, we’d automatically be a much better playoff team, no matter who we started at center.
Also, at 6′3″ and close to 200lbs, he has the size and height that would allow us to utilizing the switching DEF more often and far more effectively. Even with our current starting PG, when we get serious about playing DEF and our outside shots are falling, we’ve demonstrated our ability to defeat anyone. But with an upgrade at PG like DHarris, or even Calderon, we’ll be able to defeat anyone far more consistently.
With JJ, Marvin and Smoove, we have enough 3pt shooters in our starting lineup. Besides JJ, who usually requires a clearout, what other starter is a threat to break down a DEF with his penetration? We need a starting PG with the ability to penetrate, breakdown DEF’s, dish, finish, and/or draw fouls, more than one that’s limited to shooting 3’s. DHarris averages more FTA’s in one gm than Bibby does in 5.
Drawing fouls on the opposing teams frontline lessens their aggressiveness and effectiveness, while forcing them to rely more on their bench. If we can pull off a trade for DHarris or JCalderon, we’d only be an off season acquisition of a center like TChandler from being a serious title contender.

So I’m a little late at this point, but what is with everyone saying that Teague can’t shoot? Have you looked at any numbers? If you just want to look at this year’s numbers, admittedly a small sample size for unknown reasons, he’s hitting 35.7% of his 3s. That’s above Marvin, Joe, and Mo.
An even better indication of someone’s shooting ability is their free throw percentage. It’s the exact same shot for everyone. Teague is second on the team at 82.9%, which is actually a little down from last year when he shot 83.7%. This is better than Al, Joe, Marvin, Josh, and Bibby.
Finally, if you want a larger sample size, just look at his college numbers. In both years he shot above 80% on free throws and hit 44% of his 3s his second year.
All of the statistics point to the fact that Teague is a shooter. If you want to use the numbers to criticize him, you could legitimately state that he’s not that great of a passer. But there is absolutely no indication that Teague can’t shoot.

@DRMARYB Your making my point. I totally agree with your idea or what a real center is. My point is does Al Horford, Twin, or Zaza fit that build? You then shoot down my choices of Dalmebert and Jason Thompson to be those types of players and your chose to insert Shaq and Dampier!!! Now Its only 2 people on the above list of players that can still move and play tough interior defense and rebound!!
Dalembert and Thompson! My first choice will be Thompson because of age and youth and he is the most athletic. Now because I disagree with your choices and you disagree with mine dont make me joke.
