Atlanta Hawks at Raptors: No Canada

Long and boring story short: I didn’t make it to Toronto. Neither did Etan, who apparently couldn’t get out of his ‘hood. Marvin’s sore back didn’t allow didn’t make the trip, either.

I plan to watch the game on TV and then post some analysis here. Until then, here is some Hawks-related linkage:

  • (Via TrueHoop.com): Hoopism put together a cool graphical representation of the NBA teams by average age. Rick Sund always says the Hawks are still a young team in relation to the other top teams in the East, and this chart backs him up on that: The Hawks are the fourth-oldest team among the East’s top five, slightly older than the Bulls. Hoopism also weighted age by minutes played and the Hawks rank fourth among the East’s top five by that measure as well.
  • You might recall ESPN’s John Hollinger was among the chief critics of the Hawks(Insider) following their surrender against Boston at Philips. Two months later, he’s got the Hawks No. 6 in his power rankings and includes the Hawks among six “good” teams flying under the radar (Insider).
  • Hollinger cautions: “‘good’ here is relative — none of these teams is going to win the championship, and it’s likely that none will even host a first-round playoff series. Nonetheless, there’s an interesting story brewing with several clubs that have been well off the league’s radar since early in the season, and it’s high time we revisited them” Says Hollinger:

“Especially noticeable is that there’s far better ball movement than in the “iso-Joe” offense under Mike Woodson. But perhaps more important is that the Hawks’ formerly shambolic transition D has significantly improved now that they’re not sending the entire team to the offensive glass. . . . This team remains flawed — it’s basically four good players and a whole lot of filler — but has coped with injuries surprisingly well. . . . As a result, the Hawks are on the upswing.”

  • Jason Walker at Peachtree Hoops wishes ‘Nique happy b-day. Inspired by Nick Young going off for 45 points, Walker also looks back at the Hawks’ last 40point game and discovers that J.J. has the last six. Writes Walker:
  • “Makes sense since: A) He was the only capable scorer for many of the past 7 seasons. B) One must gobble up possessions to achieve such heights, usually, and Johnson was/is the alpha dog in terms of possession usage, so it would be difficult for another player to sneak in there unless Joe was injured and that player took his possessions.”

  • Bret Lagree at Hoopinion scouted Pape Sy’s games at the D-League Showcase and came up with these ugly numbers: “Unofficial on/off numbers, assuming Utah haven’t played much faster or slower with Sy on the court and that he’s played an equal number of offensive and defensive possessions: Utah are -10 points per 100 possessions with Sy on the floor, -0.6 points per 100 possessions with Sy off the floor over the last six games.”
  • Jonathan Givony of Draft Express has already seen enough of Sy to declare that the Hawks wasted a pick, roster spot and $600 k on him: “If Pape Sy wasn’t drafted by the Hawks and making 500k this year, you’d wonder if he’s good enough to play at the D-League level. . . . . Its moves like this (drafting Pape Sy) that make you wonder about the decisions that get made by certain NBA front offices, like the Hawks.”

So a sub-D-League quality player is why the Hawks can’t sign Damien Wilkins for the rest of the season.

    Fantastic.

Maybe while they are at it they can cut Jason Collins and sign Cenk Akyol to his roster spot.

Have we ever had someone in the front office make a decent pick? Last good thing out of the draft was the deal for Nique. Heck I think the guys on Hawksquawk could do a better job, as a matter of fact I know they could.

So Rick and the ASG finally bring over a second round pick, AND they paid part of his buyout. Only to watch him struggle in D-League. Ouch. I heard he is 6-35 from the field. I think I could go 6-35 in the D-League, and I suck at basketball.

That being said, its still early, and this season is all about learning for him. We’ll see how he does next off-season in training camp etc.

Etan has only played 18 minutes all year, so maybe he used the weather as an excuse for not going to Canada. J/K Etan.

When Marvin came back from his back injury a couple seasons ago, he was slow to get back to 100%. I wont be surprised if he struggles when he comes back.

    Hawks need a win tonight.

RELAX!! SY just came off a 4 month layoff due to injury. What were you expecting? Did you see Joe play after 3 weeks off? It took him over 2 weeks to get his groove back. It should take Sy a while to get his game on…

    Yeah I’m with Kari above

Pape Sy is going to take a lot of time to develop anyways I hope they weren’t expecting him to come in like some type of Lebron James, or Paul Pierce I mean yeah if you were I’d be disappointed to lol.

Give the guy some time he might turn out better than we think just needs to do workouts and work on his fundamentals. They saw something in him I don’t know what it was, but it was something.

Give Sy a little time. The boy’s been in bubble wrap all season. I respect Sund enough to give him at least the rest of the year in the D-league before I consider him a waste…

    O'Brien

    January 12th, 2011
    6:41 pm

It is early for Sy, and even if he takes 2 years to develop, he will still be a decent pick, considering he was the 53rd pick, and he was so young.

As Najeh said though, the issue is the Hawks are wasting a roster spot on him right now, when they could have left him overseas, and signed Damien for the entire season.

This is a game the Hawks have to win. They’ve been on a high (including a beat down of Utah in Utah), and they have Miami on Monday, so we need to keep the good vibes going.

Al should really be in the game right now. It’s dangerously close at this point, and Al was playing great. Also, Al was doing a very good job defending Bargnani as well, and now “Il Mago” is starting to go off a bit. That second foul on Al was total BS as well. He didn’t even touch the man on that one. At any rate, I hope the Hawks can maintain their lead through halftime.

Larry Drew has definitely been improving as a coach, but he still has a few annoying habits that need to go. Hopefully, the 2 foul rule or the “Horford Treatment”, as some people like to call it, will be abandoned permanently in the future.

It seems like someone says this during almost every game, and in this game, I feel urged to point it out once again. Josh takes way too many shots for the limited offensive ability he has. His shot selection, for one, was terrible for the most part tonight. The last jumper he made in the half was a good shot in the flow of the offense, but the rest of his shots were really harming the team. 9 shots in the half? Come on, Josh. A player of Josh’s offensive ability should not be taking 18-20 shots per game when you look at the other players on the team.

Joe, Jamal, and Al should all have more field goal attempts than Josh, unless Josh’s shots come directly in the flow of the offense or are wide open layups/dunks. I really wish Josh would grow up and come back down to Earth. He’s not a great offensive player. He is a very good player, but he should be focusing on making his mark in other areas of the game and not trying to be the leading scorer. I dream of the day when Josh will play his game and learn his boundaries on a consistent basis.

The Hawks desperately need to get Al involved more in the offense. This seems like a recurring theme in each game, but Al just doesn’t get enough touches sometimes. He only has 5 field goal attempts so far in this game. I would really like the Hawks to run some more pick-and-pop or pick-and-roll with him. I’d also really like to see them get him established in the paint early-on and let him go to work down there when they are struggling to find offense. That opens up a lot of other guys on the offensive end as well.

Does Marvin gets injured intentionally? Does his agent know the Hawks want to trade him, so every season after playing consistently for more than 6 games, he advices him to get injured? The smart GMs know never to trade for a player who’s on the trainer’s table more than he’s on the court. Are GMs really going to want to take a risk on Marvin after his documented problems with his back? I can’t recall a single player who’s had so many issues with their back, and came back to not be effected by their backs throughout their careers. More and more it seems like we’re stuck with Marvin for another 2 seasons minimum.

The Hawks played pretty badly in this game. Josh took a ton of awful shots and once again took way more shots than he should have taken. Joe was so-so, but did a bit too much ball hogging when things got tight. Thank goodness for those big rebounds by our bigs near the end on the awful shots by Jamal and Joe. Those final plays by Bibby and Al were really huge. I’m glad things went the Hawks way in the end.

Now, with that being said, I was severely disappointed by the way the Hawks played tonight. I’m completely blown away and disgusted by the fact that Al only had 7 field goal attempts for the game. He was open several times and was calling for the ball in the post, meanwhile his teammates continuously went away from him. This is getting to be purely disrespectful. Al deserves a much larger role in the offense. He’s already proven that he can carry a larger offensive load, and he shouldn’t be treated like the team janitor. He had a very good all-around game tonight, but was not rewarded with field goal attempts at all. I’m sick of watching Al get treated like some rookie roleplayer or like he’s Marcus Camby and is incapable of scoring and only out there for defense and rebounding. This guy is an integral part of the team, and I firmly believe that the Hawks would be far worse without him on the roster. Either start using him effectively and give the man some respect, or trade him to a team that will appreciate him. There are tons of other teams out there that would love to have him.

    Now you know!

We used to find ways to lose these games and now we are winning them. Drew is teaching this team how to win in a variety of ways! We should NEVER apologize for a win, road or a home. A one point win counts the same as a 30 point win. You didn’t see the Celtics apologizing when the beat the Knicks by one point on the road. Paul Pierce did a victory lap around MSG like Jeff George did in the Georgia Dome when his team came back to Atlanta and won a game that he didn’t even play one snap in.

With Jamal playing this well, I dont think the Hawks can trade him now. And I dont know if he will give them a hometown discount at the end of the season. He asked them for a contract, and they refused, so he said he will not give them a deal.

Over the offseason, if they want to resign Jamal, they may have to trade Josh Smith for a legit starting center. Their lineup would be New Center/Al/Marvin/JJ/Bibby.

I dont think trading Bibby will bring us much in return, because the bad teams will want to play their young guy to bring them along, and the good teams will not start Bibby (he will probably come off the bench for them).

Would the Mavericks dare let Chandler go? i think he would be the kind of starting center we need.

How exactly was Horford “off” tonight? He was 5-7 from the field and hit the mid-range shot that he took. He only had 1 miss that even looked off. The first miss rimmed out. He didn’t seem to be looking for the 15-20 footer much, but I don’t think it had anything to do with him being off. He was very efficient shooting the ball. I think him taking fewer shots had to do with the offense that the Hawks were running and the zone defense that Toronto was using.

Bibby and Mo’ and a couple of 2nd picks may be enough to get us into this trade if the Nuggets would take Bibby to play behind Ty Lawson. Harris’ 3rd year may be a deal breaker for ASG however.

The “trade Jamal” bandwagon has NEVER been about him or his quality of play. It has always been about what he’s worth vs. the Hawks’ cap situation. It never would have come to this if Marvin, Bibby, and Zaza weren’t signed to contracts that pay them double what they are worth. If the Hawks could trade some combination of those three for more productive, properly paid players, I’d much rather see that happen and see Jamal get extended. If that can’t happen, the chances of the Hawks extending Jamal – after drafting Jordan to take over his spot — seem pretty slim. If Jamal is not going to get extended, the Hawks may as well cash in his expiring contract to improve other areas of the team.

If I’m wrong and the DASG is planning to extend Jamal, obviously things change. In that case, the Hawks should try to dump Jordan and some combination of those three for a point guard upgrade or a perimeter defender.

Bibby went 2 for 6 from beyond the arc (2-8 overall). One PLAY never is the reason for the result of the game. If Bibby was 1 for 1 in the last minute of the game, that still doesn’t change the fact that if he (or Josh) would’ve had a better shooting night, they wouldn’t have been in the position for it to be so close late in the game, possibly. Now in this Melo trade that may go down, we could resign Jamal and get Harris if these teams would let us give somebody Marvin, Mo’, and Bibby. Maybe have Detroit throw in TMac, a vet minimum guy, and then sign Jerry Stackhouse, Rodney Carney, or Jarvis Hayes for that last spot.

O’Brien, I’m still not seeing an impact center who puts this team over the hump that is worth giving Josh up for. D12 is the only center in the league that I would trade Josh for. I’m a firm believer in the Hawks should attempt to get a hard nose journeyman center (Joel P) with the mid level before truly giving up one of their three best players. I actually believe the Hawks need a starting PG more than they need a starting center. If you choose to bring Jamal back, you have Joe, Al, Josh, and Jamal, and the one thing you’re still missing is the facilitator who can also put pressure on the opposing PG on the other end of the court. I would even consider a sign and trade deal for A. Brooks (I think he will end up being the ‘Felton’ of this free agent class).

Also Jamal has to understand his salary will drop some percentage just because of the new CBA that will be in place.

I suggest Bibby, Mo’, and Marvin to make the cap numbers work, and get Devin Harris, TMac and maybe one of the Nets 5 first round picks they have combined for the next 2 drafts.

Bibby would be a great backup for Ty Lawson in Denver, and he’s kinda like Billups. Marvin and Mo’ would be salary dumps to afford Devin’ contract at about 9 mill per thru 2013. And then to re-sign Jamal.

We could actually give Jamal our mid-level for 3 seasons in the above trade, and be at about 66 mil for next season for 9 players, and fill out the roster with vet minimum guys.

    Damon,

Hawks got the win and halfway back to Atlanta by now. Forget about the stats… As Sautee would say, road wins are like Gold…

    SteveW,

The Clippers are playing on a Heat High in front that sold out crowd. I won’t be surprise if they beat the Heat…

Damien, if you take out Josh’s numbers it doesn’t look as bad. I’d very much want Joe and Jamal to take that many shots per game if they could score over 50% of them, as they did this game

Is there anyone that still thinks this yrs version of last yrs team isn’t a better team? With far more to deal with and overcome, we’ve matched last yrs win total at this point in the season.

Why do we make an issue of Teague’s mistakes, like the one he made tonight that led to one fastbreak basket? Yet totally ignore the one’s Bibby makes, like the 3 he made that led to 3 fastbreak baskets?

Melvin – The Heat’s 2 weaknesses are at PG and inside. If Baron and Griffin play hard for 4 quarters, and they have some athletes to throw at DWade and LeBron, you may be right. I sure hope so. I like when the Heat lose. I root against them.

I replied to YOUR words not mine! You love back peddling don’t you?
You can’t just dismiss what you said, when convenient.

ONE PLAY certainly can determine a Game! R U Kidding Me?

When a game is tied and there is 2 seconds left? Every play before that moment becomes: irrelevant, negligible, impertinent, unimportant!

ONE PLAY that determines the outcome of games is what:
The Greatest Moments in Sports History is made of – Man!

    A walk off home run!

A Grand Slam in the 9th when down by 3!

A 50 yard field goal in OT in Football with 1 second left!

Getting stopped 1″ from the Pylon on the last play in a Super Bowl!
    (see Steve McNair’s RIP Titans)

A buzzer beater by Joe and Jamal last year!

A slam dunk by Josh to finally beat the Magic @ Phillips Arena last year!

As a matter of fact, Cable channels are created and run 24/7 to share Classic Football (NFL Network – Greatest Plays Ever), Basketball (NBA TV – Hardwood Classics).

I’m curious, where are you guys reading about a potential trade between the Suns and Hawks involving Steve Nash? That would be great if those rumors were true, but I, personally, haven’t heard anything about that. Where are you guys reading these rumors?

Is there a bigger egomaniac in the pro basketball world today than Lebron James? Lebron James is the runaway winner of that award in my opinion.

How about any uniform at all?
Devin Harris is to PG’s, what Greg Oden is to Centers.

Eternally injured. He is about as dependable as:

    A missing Father.
    A Ford Escort.
    A 3XL Condom.
    A sure bet in Vegas.
Mike Vick in a Falcons Uniform on “Fight-Night”.

Aye Melvin baby, do you see where this convo is going?

Seriously, Devin Harris and Shaun Livingston are the same player, isn’t Devin owed 9M per for 3 years to total 27M? I’ll pass on that one.
Give me Nash? And, I will stop trippin’.

The Suns are probably getting ready to free up some cap space. The Hawks should pursue this trade:

Suns get-Jamal Crawford, Teague, and Mo Evans (all have expiring contracts that would free up 14.7M)

    Hawks get-Nash and Dudley

When you first look @ this trade, you might say why would the Suns do this? They free up 14.7M to go after Chris Paul.
