Atlanta Hawks: NBA decides Hawks and Bucks will play tonight (Update: Game postponed)

2 p.m. Update: The league announced the Hawks’ scheduled game tonight against Milwaukee at Philips Arena has been postponed because of the severe weather conditions in Atlanta.

The game was rescheduled for March 15 at 7 p.m., which means the Hawks are set to play rare back-to-back home games.

The Hawks plan to attempt to leave tonight for their game at Toronto tomorrow. Their next home game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. Houston.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said the team is still deciding if fans with tickets to tonights’ game still will be able to redeem them for Saturday’s game or Monday’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday game vs. Sacramento (4 p.m).

The Hawks had a shootaround today but there was no media availability.

i wonder if nique has any say or pull in personnel decisions. will we ever know if it was nique who said that marvin was a once in a decade type talent? because every time i hear him on tv i realize that man shouldn’t be making any decisions period. the guy could jump out the gym but he’s not the brightest bulb, the sharpest knife, etc…….

Im sure Nique doesnt have that kind of pull. Billy Knight is the person to blame for Marvin. I think Nique is a bright guy, he may not be Ivy League material, but the guy is not ignorant. Just because someone doesn’t talk the greatest in front of a camera doesnt mean their a dummy.

Bird, isn’t the person to blame for Marvin. Most GMs would’ve chosen Marvin that season. Sund is the person to blame for Marvin. He’s the one that signed Marvin for longer than a three year deal.

Sorry but I agree with Abe, Nique has no business speaking on a live mic. He only states the obvious. Nique making comments like: “Them the type of things the Hawks have to do” and “The Hawks are playing very good” just bring the quality of that broadcast down.

Ramon,

The persons to blame (imo) are Woody and BK. They are the ones who decided that although the Hawks needed a PG, they were going to take a SF, although the Hawks did not need a SF.

Keep in mind that When Marvin was drafted, we had Josh Smith, Al Harrington and Josh Childress on the team. At PG, we had Tony Delk, Royal Ivey, and Tyronn Lue.

And the Hawks passed over CP3 and Deron for a SF, although PG and Center are arguably the 2 most important positions, and although athletic SFs are much easier to find. I blame Woody and BK.

honest_abe,

If ‘Nique had any input, I think he would have lobbied for the Hawks to sign his nephew when both Marvin and Mo were injured earlier in the year. But the Hawks did not sign anybody.

I personally get tired of everybody talking ish about Nique.

Nique IS the Atlanta Hawks. People can talk about Pistol Pete, or Petit, or Mookie, or any other player that has played with this organiation. But when you think Atlanta Hawks, you think Dominique Wilkins . . . period.

It’s a damn shame that some of you talk about the Hall of Famer like he’s some clueless individual, just because he’s not the ideal color commentator. That man deserves a lot more respect from some of you fans. Without Nique, we’re the damn Clippers.

You won’t see Laker fans trash Magic for his grammar mistakes. So Dominique deserves the same respect.

RESPECT THE HALL OF FAMER !!!

Even with some of the broadcasters like Johnny “Red” Kerr ( Chicago ) . . and Tommy Heinson ( Boston ), who are/were obviously bad or overly homeristic, you don’t see/hear their fans talking ish about them. Why? Because they are legends in the organiazation.

Their fans respect their legends.

And some people wonder why other fans talk ish about Hawk fans.

Good call by the league. If ATL is still having major problems, there’s no sense in playing that game tonight . . possibly putting people in jeapordy.

That would be a major revenue hit for the Hawks as well, since I imagine a good chunk of their attendees drive in from close to or outside the I-285 perimeter to go to games.

Plus you have to consider the arena workers who need to be at the game.

If the city is still bad, then it’s the right call. LOL . . I see CNN is still broadcasting in HD, since the storm hit.

I think it is ok to separate ‘Nique the commentator and ‘Nique the Hawks player. The guy I would like to be the in-game analyst is the Stinger. Put Nique back in the studio (imo).

@ Ramon,

“Also, O’brien, the league wasn’t dominated by PG play then. Majority of the championships won in the last 15-18 seasons have been from dominant athleticism at the wing positions.”.

While the league wasn’t dominated by PG play, who were the dominant athletic wings?

If anything, they were SGs’ (MJ, Drexler, Kobe, Manu, Rip, Wade), not SFs. And at the time of the draft, we hadn’t signed JJ yet. The only dominant SF I can think of is Scottie and Larry. Bruce Bowen and Prince were solid, but not dominant.

There were also dominant big men (Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson, Duncan, KG etc). But I dont think SF was a dominant position.

I know its water under the bridge, but even if Marvin was a 18, 5 and 5 player, we would still need a legit PG to win a championship.

Doesn’t is seem odd that the Hawks are preparing to travel to, of all places, CANADA, after having to cancel a home gm, in the deep south, due to icing and snow?

At this point in the season, I feel the Hawks have reached the point where they’re starting to play like an elite team. Whether at home or on the road, we’re starting to consistently get big leads on teams, which we weren’t doing before. Having JJ, Jamal and MoEvans healthy has really made a difference, along with the total acceptance of LDrew’s OFF/DEF philosophy and approach.

If the Hawks had played tonight and tomorrow night, they would have played more back to backs, more 4gms in 5days, and more gms overall than any other team. Considering how many of those were rd gms, and the number of gms we’ve lost due to injuries to 3 key players, to remain only one gm behind the Magic, who’s won 9 consecutive gms, really puts this teams overall accomplishments into perspective.

Co-sign that last statement Ken, it does seem odd that they are cancelling a game here in the south only to travel up north to Canada to play a game there where it likely wont be postponed. I appreciate what Nique did for the Hawks. I also appreciate what Steve Smith did for the Hawks (considerably less, but still, he was one of the better players on some of the better teams in Hawks history). Steve Smith, to put it mildly, sh-ts all over Nique as a commentator. Just because someone is good at one thing doesn’t mean they will necessarily be good at other things.

I’m sure Cowboys fans have a great amount of appreciation for Emmitt Smith, but I don’t think any of them would necessarily want him doing commentary for them.

Also, none of this is because of Nique’s inability to pronounce words or form sentences. I couldn’t care less about that (or people’s use of spelling and grammar on a f-cking blog for that matter). Sh-t, I actually like hearing him say “heat check” and “nimbers”, because it makes me laugh. My problem with Nique is that he never points out anything that any of us can’t figure out on our own.

Ken S,

To be considered elite, I think the Hawks need to beat teams above .500 more frequently. They are 4-9 against teams above .500 (and 2 of those wins are against Orlando).

I do think they are on the right track, so hopefully they can beat Miami next week.

Najeh,

Co-sign. I am ok with ‘Nique’s grammar and pronunciations. But I think his analysis of the game is weak.

Rather then adding something insightful, he agrees with Bob alot. And alot of his analysis is obvious to me (and I have never played any kind of basketball in my life, unless you count video games).

O’brien, Marvin was an athletic wing who could play anywhere from 2-4, and it was unsure if he was even finished growing. You say who was the last all star SF to win a title, but who was the last all star PG to win a title in the same season? Either way, I still believe as far as THIS team is concerned, Sund made the biggest mistake by re-signing Marvin for such a long deal. There was no reason to re-sign him for anything longer than a 3 year deal with a team option 4th year. As I said before, I honestly believe you should never have more than 3 players on your team who have longer than 3-4 seasons remaining on their contracts. Because the true staple of your team will never be more than 3 players over a four year span. You think about the Spurs, it was mainly Parker, Ginobli, and Duncan. Hoever Sund wants to describe it, he has full ownership over this roster, not BK. There’s not a player on this roster who are still playing on the contract that BK signed them to. All of these contracts are Rick Sund’s contracts.

O’Brien, I agree, to be considered elite to me, the Hawks need to go over 60% on their next 10-12 games against playoff teams with winning record. I say this, because to advance in the playoffs in any round your team has to win at least 57% of the games in that series (4 out of 7). The definition of elite is winning more series against ALL teams than you lose. There will always only be 3-4 elite teams in the league, no matter their payroll size.

@ Ken S,

Fair enough. Like Ramon said, I would like to see them win at least 60% of their games against teams with winning record, especially since the Hawks should be competing for a 4-5 seed.

@ Ramon,

I agree that there was no need to give Marvin a 4 year deal with a 5th year being a player option. At the very least, it should have been a team option for the fifth year.

And to make it worse, the Hawks bid against themselves, because Marvin was restricted, so they could always match any offer.

I also disagreed with giving Bibby 3 more years (it should have been a team option for the third year).

I think Rick will have an interesting offseason coming up too.

It didn’t snow in 2008, but I believe it snowed in 2007. The city has had 4 years to get it’s act together. No way a major city should be shut down for 3 days just cos it snowed! The Hawks could not be further off the radar right now, but it might be time for that perception to change. For instance, Orlando is a big story after having won nine straight games. But did you know that Orlando has gained only two games on the Hawks during its current streak?

Although I harp on new coach Larry Drew’s insistence on “fouling out” his players in the second quarter and his inexplicable zest for all things Josh Powell (on Saturday against Indiana, he called three straight post-ups for the guy), one must concede that Drew has improved the Hawks greatly in two other respects.

Especially noticeable is that there’s far better ball movement than in the “iso-Joe” offense under Mike Woodson. But perhaps more important is that the Hawks’ formerly shambolic transition D has significantly improved now that they’re not sending the entire team to the offensive glass. Atlanta has dropped to 24th in offensive rebound rate, from fifth a season go, which is the main reason the offense hasn’t been as efficient … but by the same token, the Hawks are also a very solid 11th in defensive efficiency.

This team remains flawed — it’s basically four good players and a whole lot of filler — but has coped with injuries surprisingly well. Atlanta held down the fort without Joe Johnson, going 5-4 while he missed nine games with an elbow problem; when he returned, the Hawks won three of four even with Jamal Crawford out.

As a result, the Hawks are on the upswing — winners of eight of 10, including a 23-point beatdown of the Jazz in Utah last week — and up to fifth in the Power Rankings. No, not fifth in the East — fifth in the entire league. Atlanta projects to win 52 games according to today’s Playoff Odds and is a serious threat to grab a top-four seed in the East.

“what are you definition of “elite” team? ”

To me an elite team is a team that has a chance to win a title. That’s something I determine by watching them more than I do by stats, so my idea of elite is probably going to be different from others. Right now I would say the league’s elite teams are Miami, Orlando, Boston, the Lakers, San Antonio, and Dallas. The Hawks, Bulls, and Thunder are in the group right below those teams.

An Elite Team, IMHO is a legitimate title contender for a sustained period of time.

Marvin has 3 years, $23 mil left after this season, and Chills has 4 years, $26 mil left after this season.

Chills may not defend as good as Marvin, but he might be a better fit for LD’s motion offense, and he is more versatile.

That being said, when Marvin comes back from his injuries, I hope he returns to form. Since late November, I think he is averaging close to 15 and 6 per game. If he can do that consistently (even when coming off the bench), the Hawks will be more balanced, and more dangerous.

O'Brien

Ramon,

I’m not sure if Cleveland would trade Sessions. I think they would prefer to trade Mo Williams, who makes twice as much as Sessions.

One PG I think is available is Chris Duhon from Orlando. Now that they have big money tied up to Jameer and Gilbert (and Jason Williams for emergencies), Duhon does not see the floor much (11 DNPCD since early December).

And with Orlando’s $89 mil payroll, maybe they are open to getting rid of him and his remaining 3 years, $11 mil. And Orlando needs a backup Center.

Duhon for Mo Evans and Etan Thomas. Would you make that deal? I dont think Duhon is known for defense, but he would be an upgrade over Teague as the backup PG (imo).

Maybe one of the cap experts can answer this, but the Hawks have a $3.6 mil TPE from the Chills trade. Duhon is making $3.5 mil this season.

Can the Hawks give Orlando the TPE in return for Duhon?

Ra'mon

January 12th, 2011
10:21 am

O’Brien, for Zaza and Evans, Cleveland may wouldn’t do that deal. However, I do believe (if the Hawks would) they would trade Sessions and Hollins for Marvin. Remember they strongly desired having Marvin when it appeared close to agreeing to a sign and trade for Shaq in the off season.
So the deal I would offer would be:

Hawks get:
Sessions
Hollins
Parker

Cavs get:
Marvin
Teague
and 2nd round pick

I’d rather have Bibby over Mo Williams.

The deal you mentioned, of course I would do that deal, and I think Orlando would do it as well because they have history with Evans.

Do you know how much of that $37.5 mil is taxed at the pay window? I know the lotterry winners who take the cash options pay over .60 off the top.
Last week’s Mega Million winner out west won 190M and took the 90M cash option, of course he was 60 some odd years old, but to leave 100M on the table is a lot to walk away from.

I see the NBA salaries as a lottery winning. I guess that’s why you ned a financial planner. But, who would/can you trust with all the Bernie Madoffs’ running wild on Wall Street? I sure wish I had such a dilema.

drmaryb,

You make a good point in regards to the Utah Jazz. Sloan runs a good system and he gets maximum effort from his players but his players overachieve but in the playoffs you need stars and outside of deron williams they arent gonna make any noise in the playoffs. Even when they had Boozer I never took them seriously as a contender. They have not been a factor of elite team since the days of Stockton and Malone.

The only teams I say right now have a chance to win a ring right now are the Lakers, Spurs, possibly Dallas and Celtics Heat Orlando. If the Hawks got Nash they would have a good shot to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. Hawks are a win now team might as well take a shot with Nash. Smith and Horford are still you and you can retool again with pieces in a few years to build around Josh and Smith

@ Ramon,

I forgot about the luxury tax, which we know the ASG will not pay. Mo Evans and Etan for Duhon works and keeps them out of the luxury tax though.

@ terrell,

I think you’re right. Jamal is our backup SG and backup PG. However, assuming the ASG dont resign Jamal, I think they should sign a backup PG this offseason (if they still dont believe JT0 is ready).

@ drmaryb,

Correct. If the TPE is not used within a year, it will expire. I think Chills was traded in July, so Hawks have to use it by July 2011.

However, with a new CBA and possible lockout, I strongly doubt the Hawks will use it. But look on the bright side…Phoenix also gave us a second round pick

Speaking of second round picks, I read that Sy is 6-35 from the field (.171) in the D-League so far.

For the lottery questions:

In a big lottery win the Fed tax will be 35% (the current max tax rate) and the state in which you live (GA for instance takes 6%) will take theirs unless you live in TN, FL, TX or NV – states that do not have a state income tax.

The cash option is most likely the best option since the annuity is funded by government bonds that traditionally pay a low rate of return.

Chillz=Damien Wilkins or Matt Barnes

Why do people have such a high regard for him, he can barely get off the suns bench. The reason Wilkins can’t get off the Hawks bench, is his shooting….Chillz wouldn’t offer a better option.

If you haven’t noticed LD values shot makers…..Chillz is not a shot maker….he is Wilkins(Good defender and garbage man)..A good garbage man but yes, a garbage man. That is the reason Mo get the minutes, because he can shoot the 3.

Nique and Bob…..the best homers outside of Boston you will ever find.
They are toeing the ASG line there……never a critical word about Marvin, Smoove’s jumpers, or Bibby’s 2 concrete Jordans.

Let’s define elite here: “A group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior intellectual, social, or economic status:

Going by that, the entire league is elite….now if you want to define it by basketball supremacy, the Hawks don’t deserve a mention. They have zilch to their credibility. A 50 win team is not elite…ask the Jazz, who have won 50 for 20+years it seems. I wouldn’t say the Mavs are elite…they’ve been to one Finals. They’re competitive like the Hawks, Jazz, the up and coming loud Thunder, and the Jazz. Wish for it, but it hasn’t arrived in Atlanta.

Elite means you compete against the best and beat those teams who challenge you for the top level. The playoffs is the only thing that will identify this team going forward. They shouldn’t need any more ‘playoff game experience’.

Let’s see how the Hawks look next Monday against an elite team ahead of them in their division.

DMB, good stuff as always!

Just say no to Duhon, he is another overpaid backup PG….is he currently ranked ahead of Bibby? Just asking…

drmaryb, but more importantly concerned Hawks’ fans by NBA rule, a team cannot receive a player they traded back in the same year unless thru a third team. It was widely reported two months ago that Phoenix was interested in Josh Smith for Nash, but the Hawks declined. My cousin BooBoo in Phoenix said the word there was the Hawks had offered Marivn, Bibby, and # 1 pick for Nash, Phoenix countered with Jamal, Mo, # 1 pick, and CASH(1 Mil). BooBoo reported this trade info back in early December. Now that numerous sport outlets have reported these trade talks, I guess it has been validated.
Moreover as reported, Phoenix wants to dump salaries including Chillz. Vince Carter’s contract is worth 19 mil(expiring this season). Also, this is why a third team is necessary for the Hawks to receive Chillz. Portland has been the team most mentioned. Phoenix will not trade Nash without including Chillz to any team. However, the Hawks are still holding up the deal, apparently!

Not too excited about a Chills revisit. Seems he’s joining Salim, AC, Royal and Solo as kids who looked good while we were dreaming…now they tested positive for fools gold. We need better talent. Makes me feel better about Mo Evans just thinking about it.

As for Sy, he definitley looked out of sorts in the Showcase. He did appear alot bigger than I figured. He seemed very physical and tough. He just seemed too slow to get in front of anyone and he’s definitely not an option on the offensive end. He’s not running the point, which was dissappointing, but at least he’s getting minutes.

The man who’s chewing up the court in the D-League is Mario West. Shows you the difference between D-League and NBA. Mario’s getting 20 a night leading the Red Claws while he can’t hardly score for us. Too bad his PG skills don’t translate to a solid backup PG for us. They love him in the D-League.
