Atlanta Hawks: Snow day (Update: Game On)

L.D. canceled Hawks practice today because of the inclement weather. So far tomorrow’s game vs. Milwaukee at Philips Arena is to be played as scheduled at 7 p.m. The Bucks are scheduled to leave Milwaukee at noon today for Hartsfield, where only one or two flights managed to land this morning.

UPDATE: The Bucks made it to Atlanta this afternoon. The Hawks released a statement late tonight updating the status of the game:

“As of late tonight, Tuesday’s Atlanta-Milwaukee game is scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. We will continue to have dialogue with the NBA and closely monitor the overnight weather conditions and city of Atlanta’s recommendations on the status of the roads and interstate systems before making a final decision.

If fans are unable to attend Tuesday’s contest, they will be able to redeem their game tickets over the course of the week at the Philips Arena Box Office for either Saturday’s game vs. Houston (7 p.m., January 15th), or Monday’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday game vs. Sacramento (4 p.m., January 17th).”

There is no reason that this game should be played today. Fans wanting to go to the game have to risk going out when there is ice covering the city, or trade your tickets for whatever they have available to Saturday or Monday’s game. Extremly irresponsible of the Hawks and the ownership group.

Atlanta has an NBA team? And even if we do, why in the CRAP is anybody getting all worked up about it? IT’S STILL FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!! And it WILL BE until after the Super Bowl!

Basketball season doesn’t start until mid-February for the college game (when the last week or regular season games mean something, right before the conference tournaments) and until the last week of March for the NBA (when the final playoff seeding is determined). Nobody should give TWO RIPS about NBA basketball before March, or AT LEAST until after the Super Bowl! November and December basketball means DIDDLY SQUAT!!!

Everybody should be getting excited about the Falcons playoff game and spring training starting in about 4 weeks… the NBA will be here until JUNE, for God’s sake!

And since we’re on the topic of the Hawks… it doesn’t matter what trades you people suggest… the NBA is a 15-player league… there are about 15 superstars, and they and their teams are the last 4 or 8 teams standing in the playoffs in June. Atlanta is not one of those teams. So, go ahead and suggest all the fringe players you want (Harris, Lopez, Nene, etc.)… NOBODY is helping the Hawks get to the Eastern finals or the NBA Finals UNLESS they are named Pierce, Garnett, Bryant, Durant, Howard, James, Wade, Duncan, Parker, Nowitzki, Paul or Gasol.

I’m as big a Hawks fan as anyone… grown up with them all my life… but that’s just the fact. Until it can sign a top-10 or top-15 NBA talent (sorry Max Johnson, you’re not elite), then we are doomed to be a perennial 46-to-50 win team, finish No. 4 or 5 in the East, and reach the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated.

The NBA is a top-heavy league, that’s just the way it is. Wake me up in late May when the games actually mean something and the Cavs, Clippers, Bucks, Sixers, Pistons, Nets and Kings are all out of the picture.

No game today, guys. It got pushed back to March 15. Good move by the Hawks. Some idiot (me) might have tried to make it to the arena tonight. No need to risk it.

Welcome, Jeff. Glad to see you are shilling the town’s flavor of the month. I’ve been to plenty Falcon games over the years where there were plenty of seats still available. I find it funny how many Super Fans like yourself show up when times are good.

Hello section 303… glad to see that you know SO much about my life from a 3 or 4 paragraph comment on a website.

To inform you since you’re ignorant of the facts:

I have been a lifelong Atlanta resident.

I started going to ALL Atlanta sports franchise games with my father when I was a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. I watched Dale Murphy play for the Braves, I watched the Falcons play the Saints in the rain at Atlanta-Fulco Stadium, and I went to see Tom McMillen and Rory Sparrow and the Hawks play in the Omni BEFORE Dominique. I went to several Hawks playoff games in the 90s, against the Pistons and the Bulls, and I went to games during their losing years. I went to a game as recently as last March. Heck, I even have ticket stubs from the Knights and Atlanta Attack soccer team from the 80s.

So, I will take your comment of Super Fan as a COMPLIMENT. I support my teams through good and bad, thick and thin. I am NOT one of these turncoats who grew up in Atlanta and should root for the locals, but instead chose the “flavor of the month” in the past and cheers for the Eagles, Lakers, Yankees or Red Wings because those are the hip, cool, title teams of past years.

The reason I am promoting the Falcons is because IT’S STILL FOOTBALL SEASON, YOU DUMB***. Why WOULDN’T we as Atlanta fans be pumped up about the playoffs? Hell, the Hawks might fall flat and miss the dang playoffs by April, what do you know? And if you’ll READ my post, you will see that I made a clear, lucid, CORRECT point: that only a top-tier, top-10 or 15 superstar would help Atlanta get past where it is. The Hawks have peaked, plain and simple. This crew could be together for a decade, and the final record will always read: 50 wins, 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs, eliminated in the Eastern Conference second round.

I show up when times are good OR bad, sir. So don’t judge me for stating facts. It IS football season, we ARE pumped for the Falcons, and fans who don’t have unlimited money or time or energy SHOULD focus right now on the NFL playoffs, NOT on the friggin’ NBA.

See you at the game, Section… if you even bother to go. I’m an Atlanta native and fan of the Falcons, Braves, Hawks and Thrashers, and dam proud of it. GO FALCONS! And, if they make the playoffs and show some life against winning teams in April, GO HAWKS! Wouldn’t it be cool to have four pro playoff teams in 2011? It could happen. GO ATLANTA!!!!!
