Greetings, all-
Pretty solid effort for the Hawks, particularly after the half.
- Hawks had 36 baskets and 27 came on assists. It’s not their highest percent of assisted baskets, but it’s close. I asked Larry Drew Saturday morning what statistics were important to him, and the one thing he mentioned was assists, as it helps him gauge how the ball movement is. He sounds very encouraged by what he’s seeing, not surprisingly.
Drew: “I think in watching Joe and watching Al and Josh and all those guys, it seems like they’re stating to really pick up what were trying to do and they’re having fun with it.”
I thought it was a pretty sharp game for them, passing-wise. Joe Johnson had some good touch passes to set up Mike Bibby, and there were several out of the post to spot-up shooters.
- Drew said he had concerns about the team not having its legs after coming back off the road. I seem to remember hearing the same thing recently, that the first game at home after a road trip is often kind of difficult. Energy can be lacking, etc. I don’t quite fully understand the reasoning – I guess maybe you’re still weary from the travel – but his concerns were founded. He said the team was winded early and he had to challenge players at halftime. He said the team was “clearly being outran” in the first half.
They took control after the half. It helps, I imagine, that the team that they had to take control from was the Pacers, who are a pretty weak bunch, although they certainly frustrated the Hawks.
- Josh Smith on playing Tyler Hansbrough: “Psycho T, isn’t that what they call him? You definitely have to match his intensity. He’s definitely a hard-nosed, hard-working player. You’ve just got to keep your eye on him every possession.”
- Drew on mismatches (including Smith-Hansbrough): “I thought we did a good job of that tonight. Our first couple wins against Indiana, we did the exact same thing, just went to some of the matchup problems, and if they didn’t come down, we scored. If they did, we got the ball out and made them pay.”
- Johnson: “I thought we came out pretty aggressive, but we got a little lackadaisical there in the first half and really let them back in it. It happens, but in the second half we pulled away.”

Yes!!! Thanks to the Hawks from another sport on another coast I won’t have to relive the torture of another deep playoff run and the obnoxious WHO DAT Nation!!!
Onto our Hawks, J Smoove with a great all round game. JJ is slowly pulling his scoring avg back up to par. I agree with superiorblogman – we are two moves away from walking away with the conference. Nash? Collison? Anybody but Bibby as our starting pg. Bibby needs to be our on call assassin nothing more nothing less.
Have to keep the streak going – Orlando is going to have a let up eventually and we have to take advantage.

ESPN’s trade machine tells me that my idea of sending Jamal and Marvin to the Suns for Nash and Childress can’t work, because the Hawks can’t reacquire Childress until June 30. So much for that.

Najeh, I think this a trade that brings Nash here.
Hawks get:
Steve Nash
Marcus Camby
Suns get:
Jamal Crawford
Zaza Pachulia
Andre Miller
Portland gets:
Robin Lopez
Josh Childress
J. Teague
M. Evans
And 2nd Round pick
This trade works, and the Hawks are still able to sign Stackhouse for added depth at the wing position. Marvin becomes JC1, and instantly becomes one of the best 6th men in the league. Camby is way better than Zaza and adds even more options for the playoffs. Phoenix gets a point guard who is still effective, plus $10 mil in expiring contracts, and Zaza. Portland gets rid of the team’s cancer in Miller, and the 2 years left on Camby’s deal. They pick up a young center in case they can’t come to terms with Oden. And they also pick up a young SF and a PG to go along with the expiring contract of M. Evans.

The guy deserves to be here…….he’s a winner……and an artist….and the Hawks can use him as they claw their way upward.

Sam, you say Jamal’s a winner. But you think he’s more of a winner than Nash? Giving up Jamal for Nash is a steal! Nash shoots better than Jamal, creates offense for teammates better than Jamal, and has won more in the playoffs than Jamal. Nash and Horford/Josh in the pick and roll would be deadly against any team in the playoffs. When the Hawks face teams in the playoffs, they’re going to need a facilitator, not an isolator. When the Celtics and Heat bog the lane down in the middle, Crawford has nowhere to go without forcing a shot.

Major, the Wizards used to LOVE to play together. The Mavericks loved to play together. What have they won though? The Lakers and Celtics always have problems in the locker room (Artest, Odum, Bynum, Bryant, Rasheed, Rondo, Davis, Nate Robinson), and the still win. The Hawks like to play together when they’re winning. Three weeks ago, they didn’t seem as if they liked to play together. When Josh and Al were getting pissed and telling Sekou the team needs to share the ball more, they didn’t seem like they liked playing together. I have never heard a player say they didn’t like playing with Steve Nash. I bet Joe would be ecstatic to have Nash on the team. And Nash would instantly raise the play level of Josh and Al. As I said Jamal is a very good player. But he is not the type of player to make his teammates better. And against a zone defense, or swarming defense (like the ones the Hawks will face in the playoffs), Jamal’s game will drop off. Remember, Jamal hasn’t really done this against Eastern playoff teams. Jamal is only averaging 13 points against the Celtics, Magic, and Heat this season. In May, its not about how many points you can put on the Clippers, Kings, Jazz, or Pacers. Its about how many points you can put on the Celtics, Magic, Heat, and now Bulls.

If I was Phoenix, I would trade Nash for Crawford and Zaza because it would give me over $25 million in expiring contracts (including Vince Carter’s) and it opens up the possibility to trade under performing Robin Lopez and Lopez’s attitude. It also give me half of a season of giving the fans a player who can excel in the up and down game that Gentry loves to play.
Now if I’m Atlanta, I do the trade because Nash is still one of the best point guards in the league. And Nash averages more points than JC1, while giving you 12-13 assists per game. When was the last time JC1 had 12 assists in a game? 12 assists to go with 18 points, is one man being responsible for 40 points a game, compared to JC 18 points and 3-4 assists a game (which is 24 points a game). Also Steve Nash has performed in the PLAYOFFS where JC1 has yet to do.

Nash averages 11 assists per game, so he is very willing to set uys up.
Overall, I like the way the Hawks have been playing of late. But I need to see them keep up this level of play against good teams (the Utah win was a big step in that direction).
I would like to see how they look on 1/18 @ Miami, 1/21 vs N.O., 1/29 @ Dallas. Can they keep it up? because in the playoffs, the defense steps up, and teams will clog the lane, so we have to continue making shots to have a chance to advance to the second round and beyond.
I like the way the players seem fully bought in to LD’s system now though.

When I say we need a Center that demands to start every game and a PG that can either change the pace and or play some defense I am not typing or speaking of Nash and Camby. I laugh when people jump all over guys like JJ and sometimes Jamal for holding the ball too much. Nash does the same damn thing if you watch the games, he holds the ball trying to set teammates up, Nash is not the answer to anything other than “Maybe” hype and ticket sales.
I am thinking more along the lines of Javale McGee or Marc Gasol or even Gortat if all else fails. I am thinking Devin Harris, Rodney Stuckey or Jonny Flynn as the PG. How unlucky were we for the Nuggets to select Lawson at 18 and we had to settle for Teague at 19? I saw TJ Ford try to post Teague last night, that’s the rep Teague has in the league right now. Noone respects his game, add me to that.

Hawks will not send out several players to get one. First the Hawks have to decide if they want to keep Crawford or not. If so, then go ahead and sign him and not wait for the summer for it to get nasty. I think the Hawks will wait to the summer and the collective bargaining agreement to get a cheap deal. This is a franchise that has ownership that does not allow the general manager to make any decisions. The GM Rick Sund is nothing more than a puppet.

If the Hawks remain serious about doing a better job in the playoffs, they had better do something about Bibby and his MATADOR DEF. While he’s had a few good gms on DEF, for him, that won’t happen during the playoffs.
We’ll be involved in a 7gm series with the same team, and they’ll be targeting Bibby every gm. We won’t have the luxury of playing weak teams that either can’t or won’t take advantage of the DEF liability and OFF limitations we have at PG.
I don’t see SNash as a solution either, since we aren’t having problems with pts or assists. We’re having problems with perimeter DEF, and SNash DEFINITELY isn’t a solution for that problem. With Nash replacing Bibby, and with his need to control the ball to be effective, his 11-12 assists would basically be replacing the assists we’re currently getting from JJ, Josh, Jamal and Bibby.
Keep in mind, with Jamal gone, we’d lose his assists and scoring, while JJ, Josh and Bibby’s assists and assist opportunities would be reduced considerably, with Nash dominating the ball. We don’t need an AllStar caliber PG, especially a 37yr old future HOF one. We need a PG with the speed, quickness, and mental toughness to play above average DEF. He also needs to be able to penetrate, dish, and/or finish.

OK-Rick Sund. It’s time to get in on that Nets-Nuggets-Pistons deal by offering Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans and Etan Thomas to the Nuggets for exchange for Devin Harris (since the salaries match) and agree to use your trade exception to accept Johan Petro–a guy you drafted when you were Seattle’s GM–to facilitate the deal.
Harris is that complete PG that LD desires and by adding him to a starting line-up that includes JJ, Smith, Horford and Collins, this team now has a better balanced line-up, more athleticism, better ball-handling on the break and much better on-the-ball defense.
Denver will accept Harris as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal but doesn’t really want his long-term contract. They’d much rather have the expiring contracts of Evans and Thomas as well as Bibby’s deal which expires next year. And if you have to accept Petro to get Harris, well–there are worse fates than exchanging someone who never plays (Thomas) for a 24-year old 7-footer who may develop into a credible back-up.
Now’s the time–

After reading the post. I have to agree that the 2 main positions that we need to address is PG and C. Why not trade Jamal if we dont plan on re-signing. You would loose him for nothing. I like the Nash trade. I cant imagine how much better our offense and the players surrounding nash would be. Nash can give you everything Jamal can give you and more. The biggest difference between the 2 is that Nash makes everybody around him better where Jamal doesn’t. Yes nash holds the ball a lot but so does JJ and JC1. Atleast with Nash holding the ball he’s trying to find and creat ways of making easy baskets. As far as a big man goes. I dont know who is available as a big man goes but I wouldn’t mind trading for an eddie curry or one of the lopez brothers. We dont need a dominating center we just need someone who can contribute consistantly. From what I hear Johnny Flynn is on the tradeing block. He will be a good fit. He can shoot, drive, create and he is tough. A great finisher in the paint. My first choice would be Nash though. I love his game. I love a point gaurd who looks to creat for others first. Plus he would be the best shooter on our team even if we kept Jamal.

Jamal is not a point guard any more than Jason Terry is a point guard. A real point guard makes the game easier for his teammates by setting them up with easy shots. CP3, Deron Williams, Nash, Rondo… these are point guards. Jamal is an undersized shooting guard. A really good one, but still, he’s a shooting guard.

And I’d be more concerned by Nash’s age if he hadn’t spent the last 6 years defying everyone who thought he was washed up. If you remember, people were wondering when he signed his original five year deal with Phoenix whether he would be worth it by the end of his deal. Not only was he worth it, but they extended him, and he hasn’t slipped at all this season. Considering how good he is right now at age 37, I’m not all that worried about him falling off.

Ken, I actually see Nash having more HIGH productive years left than Tony Parker or Harris. The difference between Nash and JC is, when JC’s shot isn’t falling he’s looks all out of sorts. When Jamal isn’t scoring, he has nothing else that he contributes to the game consistently besides more shot attempts. Nash would instantly become our best assistant coach on the team as well. Right now we don’t have any guard who pushes the break consistently while looking for someone coming to fill the lane. Nash changes all of that. With more running, Nash best defense becomes the ability to get fouls on the other team’s player in result of their failed attempts to get back. Don’t have to play All Star defense if the opposing PG has 2 fouls in the first quarter. Also, while JC may be a better ’scorer’ Nash still remains a better shooter than JC. That means Nash and Joe would work better with the big line up, in case of anyone trying to play zone against the Hawks in the PLAYOFFS. As I’ve said, this run of JC has been entertaining and instrumental. But its all been in the regular season. Nash has constantly performed in the playoffs against the best teams of the decade (Lakers, Spurs, Mavs, Nuggets). IMO Nash makes this team better than Orlando, because it takes Bass and Howard out of the game. Nash also makes this team very capable of beating Boston and Miami in seven games. Philips Arena is always crazy in the playoff. Imagine the new showtime, and how it will ignite the crowd at the chance to actually make it to ECF and farther. I’d love to be able to attain Nash without giving up JC (Marvin instead). But I doubt Phoenix would take that when they still have Dudley and Chills for 4+ seasons. IF Phoenix would accept a package of Bibby, Marvin, Teague, and a 1 first round pick for Nash and Dudley, I would say jump all over it.

If you can improve on Bibby and Marvin (and you should be able to), then move them in a package and let’s keep our bench scoring. We are still winning without Marvin, so I don’t see a big impact if he doesn’t stay here in Atlanta. Accept who he is, and take a contract that someone else is trying to dispose of.
You guys want a PG? Its a shame Conley got a new deal…I still pine for his type of ability to drive to the basket. He also carries that 3-1 assist to TO ratio…not sure if he would be dealt after signing a long term deal though.
The Hawks have to make a move to show a serious attempt at playoff advancement. Bibby and the current bench won’t get it done.

Diego, interesting, but Curry isn’t a PG and you aren’t bringing him off the bench. Prince puts Marvin on the bench, but not sure about any defense from Biedrins either.

On the season, Nash is 117-129 (91%) from the FT line, in 33 mpg. Bibby, on the other hand, is 23-37 (62%) from the FT line, in 30 mpg.
So although Nash doesn’t shoot the 3 like Bibby, he is penetrating, he is getting fouled, and he’s making his foul shots.
Both play bad defense, and their assist to turnover ratio is close. But Nash is a HOF PG who would excite the fan base, and I think he would excite the players (even if they don’t say it loud), because Nash would get everybody easier shots.

terrell, LOL. I just meant Mo, Etan, and Bibby for Harrris. Bibby comes off the books next season but DEN can probably move him to a team that needs a PG….like Minnesota or LA.

I wounder if Billups might be a deal breaker i still think Mello will end up as a Knick I wish the Hawks could get in that trade and get Billups .

Guys,
Although Bibby has played well for us, I dont think he has much trade value until next year when his contract is expiring.
And nobody wants Etan (dude has played 18 minutes all season). Mo might be movable because his $2.5 mil is expiring.
But what Rick would like us to forget, is that the Hawks have a $3 mil TPE from the Chills trade. So the Hawks can trade for a player in that price range, if the other team is looking to cut costs.

NAJEH-You’re right, Jamal isn’t a PG, but he has enough PG skills to be very effective in our OFF system, which doesn’t require true PG skills. I’m certain you’ll agree that Bibby is a true PG, even though he seldom penetrates, doesn’t break down DEF’s or create easy scoring opportunities, especially inside the lane.
Yet, you feel he can’t effectively run the OFF as a PG, even though he can do everything Bibby does, and all of the things he doesn’t do. Our ability to score has been a far bigger strength than our ability to defend, especially on the perimeter. With SNash at PG, the Suns have been a prolific scoring machine, but their lack of DEF, especially perimeter DEF, has been their undoing.
Why try to coverup our perimeter DEF problems by trading valuable assets for an OFF minded 37 yr old PG that’s an worse defender than Bibby? While we’ve understandibly been rather inconsistent offensively, due to injuries to key players, we’ve proven our ability to score pts. However, we’ve consistently struggled with defending quick, fast athletic PG’s since Bibby’s arrival.

Sund needs to make a move or they are gonna do like they did the last few seasons. Slow and inevitable death.

RAMON-Can’t argue with you assessment on SNash. However, he doesn’t have the skills to overcome our perimeter defensive issues. And can’t you say the same thing about Bibby, when his shot isn’t falling? Jamal can certainly do more than shoot jumpers. Haven’t you seen him penetrate and break down DEF’s, especially recently? When JJ and Jamal are playing together, have you noticed teams don’t double JJ whenever he touches the ball, like they did when Jamal was out?
He forces DEF’s to play straightup, and he certainly makes them think twice about playing zone. SNash is better at generating assists, but Jamal is better at shooting, scoring, and almost everything else. I don’t like the idea of entering the 2nd half of the season becoming totally reliant offensively on a 37yr old PG that plays absolutely NO DEF.
What we need most is a younger PG that plays DEF, penetrates, and brings consistency to our overall OFF production. TJ Ford, who’s in the final yr of his contract, would be a better option for the Hawks than Nash.

I also forgot to mention that MConley, who’s a restricted FA, is also in the final yr of his contract, and would provide an excellent solution to our PG issues.

Ken S,
If I’m not mistaken, Memphis signed Conley to an extension, so he is no longer available.
If Bibby’s shot is not falling, he is almost useless. If Nash’s shot is not falling, he can still give you 10 assists.
If Jamal’s shot is not falling, he is still going to shoot it 15 times (although he will give you 3 assists), and he will still take a fair amount of bad shots for someone whose shot is not falling.

OBRIEN-If Memphis has resigned Conley, then they made a good move. When all is said and done, I doubt if the Hawks will even make an attempt to acquire SNash. Money is still a big issue with the ASG. If they won’t even enter discussions about resigning a player as productive and versatile as Jamal, I don’t see them getting on the hook to acquire SNash.
I just don’t see how anyone can think anything we try to do, other than replace Bibby as our primary PG, can give us a better chance in the playoffs. In the playoffs, the ability to play DEF, especially perimeter DEF, and the ability to attack DEF’s, is what makes a team successful. With Bibby as our primary PG, we’ve already seen during previous playoffs how much of a negative impact his limitations and liabilities have had.
However, Bibby can be a real asset coming off the bench in critical playoff situations when we need pts.
