Sacramento–Lester Conner’s pregame board has a different look tonight. The offensive and defensive keys are each labeled with “good teams.” As in . . .
Defensively, good teams: box out, defend one-on-one, defend in transition and play hard. Offensively, good teams: take good shots, make the extra pass, execute the offense, put away bad teams.
At the bottom of the keys: “REALIZE We are a good team.”
The Kings, who own the worst record in the league, qualify as a bad team. Sacto has won two of its last three, though, and the Hawks haven’t truly crushed a “bad” team on the road since Nov. 28 at Toronto.
“We don’t even look at the record,” L.D. said. “You have got to respect all opponents. Anybody can be beaten on any given night. They are a team that’s capable. I watched their game against Phoenix, and if you would have stopped the tape at the five-minute mark you would have thought that Phoenix was going to come away easily with a win. Sac kept playing, they made some shots and they ended up winning the game.
“In this league, anything can happen. We have got to play with that consistent effort that we have been searching for for a few games now.”
Going big
L.D., influenced by Kings rookie DeMarcus Cousins, is using the big lineup again.
“He is a load,” Drew said. “I didn’t want to put Al on him at the very beginning. At some point Al will be at the five but I didn’t want to start with Al banging with him because he is a presence in the low post. He’s a big body. He’s been playing pretty well.”
Cousins is averaging 21.7 points in his last three games. . . .
It doesn’t appear JC2 is joining Pape Sy in the D-League anytime soon.
“His name came up even before Pape went,” L.D. said. “That hasn’t been anything solid as far as that is concerned. We brought his name up weeks and weeks ago. We are just going to leave our options open with that.”

Smoove gets burned on the perimeter by Garcia on one end and travels trying to drive inside on the other end. Then he posts up and finds Collins for an easy dime.
The big lineup is good for a lot of people, but it is not good for Smoove. He belongs in the post, and PF is the easiest way to keep him there.

there seems to be this misperception that depth somehow translates into a championship roster. most championship teams have six guys they can depend on. quality over quantity. we sit here for hours dissecting minutes of who exactly! bibby or teague? wilkins or evans? duck butt or jsmurf? ld or woody? players who are necessary but not necessarily essential for this team to make some legitimate noise in the east. need a big three. who’s ours? looks like there’s four wannabe horsemen trying to settle who rightfully deserves to be a part of this unholy trinity. if that flew over your head it’s ok because i have no idea what it means other than that damien needs more PT!!!!!!!!
an aside…. silence is golden when compared to listening to nique breakdown the game.. “I tell you Bibby is really shootin that ball.” for the one hundreth time… geez do some freaking homework.
i hear what you guys are saying about thibodeau but “CMON MAN!!!!”…. that dude ain’t all that. he’s got one heckuva roster though. he should be a major contender in the east with rose, boozer and noah. it’s ok. i know you guys are smarter than that. i’ll let this one slide. shall we take a look at the bull’s last ten wins? raptors, cavs, nets, bucks, pistons, wizards, 76ers, raptors, pacers, timberwolves. those teams look familiar? pretty much the same team the hawks ran through. tom thibodeau is an ok head coach and an awesome assistant coach. instead of competing for championships that team will settle for a 2nd round bow out reminiscent of our hapless hawks.

as for the ongoing discussion about marvin. he sucks. can he be a decent piece in the right situation? maybe. he’s slow, awkward and not all that athletically gifted. add to those facts he’s an under avg passer and dribbler and you have one pretty pathetic baller. not to mention second overall pick.
jsmurf please go far, far away.
too many guys on this team trying to be “the” “da” man? jsmurf and his desires to transform into a poor mans lebron is just wasted energy. jj and his “i don’t give a damn about you i’m rich b*tch!” attitude is warranted but disappointing from your captain and supposed leader. ld and his stuttering make for a painful interview but he’s a bright guy that actually conceptualizes and theorizes (is that a word?) the game but he’s too much of a p***y to demand the players give him what he expects.
why is every atlanta them “rise up” pretty lame if you ask me.

Bill Walton made some great points about the Hawks during the broadcast. He pointed out what I consider to be the team’s biggest problem – mental toughness. He mentioned that the Hawks have to personnel to be a contending team, but they fail to progress mentally and don’t play smart basketball. He also called out how infrequently we go to our bigs in the post, which makes almost no sense. He also called out the fact that we try to over-dribble and go 1 vs.1 too often. I agree with all of these points. Walton knows what he’s talking about.

Maybe the Hawks are not running an entirely different offense, but the Hawks this year are definitely sharing the ball better (as evidenced by the fact that they are assisting on a higher percentage of made baskets) and playing inside-out more instead of having the offense flow through the perimeter. Both of those qualify as significant improvements.

He is MUCHHHHHH better off in D-League right now. We will get roasted out there if he gets minutes. At least with Mo, even if he gets 3 layups stripped every game, he is not that bad. Jordan will screw us over badly if he gets regular minutes

To get something good, you have to give up something good. But your right. Our bench would be horrible, making our team horrible. Jamal > Marvin. But you know what JeJe, there’s still hope.
Drew said he’s considering making the big line up, his regular line up. If thats the case, then Marvin would come off the bench. With luck, Marvin might “demand” a trade. With that…Sund might pull off a miracle like he did with Jamal.

No way. The league is drifting towards being a PG-oriented league, and a team with a dominant PG is never going to trade him for a PF, even one as good as Horford. I’m not sure Horford is even as good as Westbrook regardless of position.

I don’t disagree with any of this, but if you look at the Hawks’ salary cap situation, it’s hard to see how they can improve personnel in any way shape or form without dealing Jamal. The fact is that with the way the roster is constructed, with the surplus at SG and the lack of depth at other positions, he remains the Hawks’ most attractive trade chip.
And like you mentioned, he’s not going to be cheap this offseason either. Do you have any confidence in the ability of Sund and the DASG to re-sign him if they don’t trade him? I don’t.

Could Jamal have picked up his play of late, because he’s realistically in danger of losing his sixth man status, now that Marvin will be coming off the bench also? If Marvin comes in and get you 15-16, 7 rebs, and solid defense, how does Marvin not become the first off of the bench?

If you’re talking about someone as young and as good as Westbrook, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’d trade any single player on this team for Westbrook. I’ve always chimed in on the “trade Horford or Smoove for a real center” argument by saying I’d only trade one or the other if the Hawks were getting someone who was as good or better. Well, Westbrook is better, in my opinion. He’d be worth that deal.

I’d trade Smoove before Al or Marvin. Hawks have dead weight and the money could be spent else where. We have a ton of big men that we dont use. Like 5 of our players get dnp or 3 mins a night. Mo evans could be gotten rid of and let JC2 play, Zaza could be gotten rid of and let one of the other bigs play, get rid of bibby and let Teague play. Lots of cheaper options. The Spirit is spending money…just not in the right places.

I dont think you can trade Smoove before Al or Marvin or even anyone else. He gives us to much defense. A very decent amount of assists, good points, rebounds, tremendous shot blocking, low post defense, perimeter defense, and (something that I think is very important) explosivness…that jump starts our crowd and his teammates. There is’nt anyone else on this team that can do even a majority of that. Ofcourse he makes quite a bit more mistakes. Shot selection at times is very awful, temper, basketball I.Q. is sometimes below average. And I know we *ALL* go ballistic when he messes up, but we all know we need him.
Now, I’m not saying he’s untouchable, but like Najeh said, if we are able to get someone just as good or better then go for it. But we’d either have to get a PF or C in return. But…once again, that PF or C has to be just as good or better.
