Atlanta Hawks: No MRI for Al Horford’s bruised hand

Hawks center Al Horford said today he decided against having an MRI for his bruised shooting hand. Horford said after Atlanta’s victory at Milwaukee Monday that he would get more tests for the hand after X-rays were negative but he changed his mind.

“I didn’t think it was necessary,” he said. “I just think it’s a matter of, I’ve had several injuries to it and it takes longer to heal. I was getting concerned because it wasn’t getting any better. It feels somewhat better today.”

Horford said he’s accumulated injuries to the hand in his three-plus seasons with the Hawks. The latest flare-up came after he was hit on the hand in a game against Indiana on Dec. 11. Horford hasn’t missed any games.

The current treatment regiment for the hand is ice and electrical stimulation. The Hawks had a three-day break last week but a return to contact in games caused the hand to swell again.

“I hope it goes away,” he said. “[Rest] is the key. I thought taking those couple days off would make it better but it really didn’t. I just have to stay on it.”

I think the Hawks need to make a big trade.Get rid of Bibby and trade Horford for a solid center and a point guard.Send Marvin with them and get Josh Smith some help.

AFTER BEING A FAN OF THIS FRANCHISE FOR THE PAST 24 YEARS, AND AFTER SEEING THE PERIODIC BAD SITUATIONS AND BAD LUCK THAT THIS FRANCHISE HAS GONE THROUGH, I AM STARTING TO THINK THAT THE CITY OF ATLANTA IS THE REAL PROBLEM, AND NOT THE HAWKS…ATLANTA JUST HAS TOO MUCH TO OFFER FOR THE HAWKS TO STAY FOCUSED..ATLANTA JUST MIGHT BE TOO FUN OF A CITY FOR THE CURRENT PERSONEL IN PLACE..ITS TIME FOR THE HAWKS TO STOCK UP OR BORROW MATURE VETERANS THAT CAN HELP ATLANTA WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.

@ Hoopster

Did you get up on the the wrong side of the bed or something? How in the world could you say such a thing about the most consistent and productive player on the roster? There are a few players on the Hawks roster that are not producing on a nightly basis, but Al Horford is not one of them.

I am a huge Hawks fan here in Chicago. The other day, my girl and I went to a Bulls game. And while we were outside I overheard some guys talking about elite teams when the Hawks came up in the discussion. Yes, I felt obliged to give my take on the topic. “Which team do you think the Bulls would have the most problems with in a seven game series?” the guy asked me. I replied, “The Hawks without question! We hold an advantage at every position but the one (point guard). And if Rose were to go on a rampage like he has the tendency to do at times, my man Teague has the footspeed and quickness to slow him down.” The guys looked at me as if I were the Incarnation of Death or something. Then they noticed the Joe Johnson jersey I had on and started talking about the athleticism we have up and down the roster, how under-utilized Al Horford is, and the decline of Mike Bibby outside of his three point shooting. It was then that I dimissed myself from the conversation because I was heated. Heated that they had the audacity to speak such words about my beloved Hawks when they basically overhauled the entire roster (save a few) to even get mentioned in the same sentence as Playoff Contenders!

Excuse me for venting, but Hawks fans we have and have had an above average team for quite sometime. There is alot of hate on this blog and others about these guys but consider this. We could be a lot worse than where we are!

trade marvin.. bibby will be fine, hes good with teauge on his back

what they need is a solid center and a cap space for next year..

i heard sac town is trashing cousins beacause of his attitude. sund can send them an offer and give them williams. cousins will be happy playing in a winning team and hawks can work on his attitude like they did on smith..

if they want a cap space and make use the expiring contract of jamal crawford. send crawford williams and collins to sacramento for cousins and tyreke evans.. maybe it will work

and the hawks will be a very young and talented team

We can’t afford to have Al Hortford out. He was the centerpiece to our success without Joe Johnson. He needs to get that MRI and play it safe. The Hawks don’t seem to have ANY longterm focus this year.

The Hoopster,

Horford averages more points and rebounds than Josh Smith. Horford shoots a MUCH higher percentage and has more double-doubles than Smooth. He’s bigger and stronger than Josh Smith and doesn’t pout when things go wrong.

Why would we EVER trade Horford for the less productive, less mature, less consistent Josh Smith to become the focal point?

I don’t understand why Al just does not get the MRI. What could that hurt?

I’ve been out of town for the last week, in the Michigan artic. Watched the last 3 Hawks games this morning (Cavs, Hornets, Bucks). Gotta give Teague some props. He has been playing well. Collins is my man, though! I knew that guy was a good player.

Speaking of Teague…he should get major minutes tonight. The running style of the Warriors should play right into his hands. Let Bibby get some rest tonight. Give Teague the balk of the minutes.

My New Year’s Resolution: I’m going to quit being so manic everytime the Hawks lose to a team they should beat. I think I can do it.

I appreciate that Rufus. Sometimes I think I can take be being a Fan a little overboard. Like I have had every 2K nba basketball game and would not play with any other team but the Hawks. Comcast blessed me with NBA League Pass so that I can watch all of the their games. My closet is filled with all sorts of Hawks goodies. It has taken my girlfriend damn near three years to accept the fact that when I am surfing through my phone it is not another girl that I am texting. I am simply checking any and all updates concerning the franchise.

Men by nature are very competitive. And even though some of us won’t admit to it we take a liking to sports to quinch a comptetitive urge. It is all for the for the love of the game. The will to outdo your opponent or simply dominate is why we indulge. People we are men. Men from all walks of life with a common desire… to see our team do better! If we didn’t care so much then we wouldn’t set aside time to blog about why we lost or who didn’t do what? For Christsake, three years ago we would not be having this conversation fellas because our playoff hopes were shot until we aquired Mike Bibby. Was that so long ago? He may have slowed down alot since then, but has more than fit the bill since his arrival.

Funny thing is that on 2K11 in the My Player mode, I performed just well enough during the Draft Combine to get selected by the Hawks. Playing with my Avatar after the guys lose a game is a good way for me to let off steam. I guess this is what makes me a Fan!

@ Mike

Maybe Jeff Teague should beef up and establish a solid core this coming offseason. What do you think? What does he weigh, like 180 or something? But if it takes away from that God-given speed then he should make up for it with a solid mid-range stroke. Sort of the same route Rose did.

I might have to jump on the bandwagon with that last comment you made because I too have fits when they lose to sub .500 teams or even above average teams that they go into the fourth quarter with double digit leads and lose their composure and will to.

He (Horford) should be made to take an MRI. The team has signed him to a 5- yr 60 million dollar contract. I would think they would not won’t their investment to be sitting on the bench. Last I heard Horford didn’t attend medical school. The team need a new coach.

Samuel ,

I agree that Larry Drew is worse with Jordan Crawford when clearly the youngster can PLAY. No excuses for that, especially when he could become so much more balanced than Jamal is, if only he is developed.

Was that same person the one decrying Mike Bibby all offseason long and saying that Teague should take his spot?

Horford needs an MRI and however long it takes to get healed. Use the time to really feel out what we have w/o him. That will truly tell the story about who is or isn’t backing Horford up. It’ll show quickly that we need another big post defender not named ZaZa or Etan. Send them packing with JC1 for real help for Horford. He desparately needs it.

Horford’s like Joe. He’ll play every night. Like Joe LD needs to have the balls to tell him to get the MRI and sit till he’s better.

Two trades that would be do-able and would immediately
put the Hawks into Championship contention.
1st;
Portland gets:
Marv and Zaza
Hawks get:
Camby
2nd;
Charlotte gets:
Jamal [exp cont], Mo [exp cont] & JC2
Hawks get:
Gerald Wallace & DeSagana Diop
* editor’s note – MJ covets exp contracts @ this time.

McGhee is the stout young talent that can help Al. Bring him in along with Hinrich to bolster our needs down low for Crawford. Gives them a nice expiring contract as well as a “shotmaker” to go along with Wall.

MRI?

IDK about that, If the X-Rays are negative for bone pathology (disease), then a MRI may not be necessary, based on clinical assessments by the staff orthopedist. The ortho-neuro hand tests performed will rule out either:

Bone
Ligament
Muscle

Damages. If the test are negative for ligaments and muscle pathology, then a MRI would more than likely be negative. Swelling and pain can be visualized and palpated and diagnosed without an MRI. The MRI would show If there is a torn ligament or muscle, then I would just treat those symptoms with: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and/or: ultra-sound and E-stim.

Either way, just treat the symptoms. If conditions are worsening, then a MRI would help to see if the soft tissue is damaged and how much damage there is.

I guess, we have to trust the team orthopedist to order the MRI and not rely on Horford to make that decision. He is a franchise asset at the end of the day.
But, his stroke looked awesome in that last game, performance wise.
