Atlanta Hawks at Hornets: Back in action

New OrleansIt’s been a long time . . . I shouldn’t have left you . . . without a strong blog to step to. . . .

Season’s Greetings, blog people. Hope you are having a good Christmas weekend. I had some of my people come down from The Ville to stay with me for a few days. In case they read this, let me just say it was a delightful time and at no point did I contemplate the advantages of living alone. Ain’t family great?

The Hawks are back in action (and Jamal is back in the lineup) but not before taking some time for inaction. L.D. let them loose after the W against Cleveland Wednesday, canceling an early Thursday practice because “it would have been beating a dead horse to death,” or at the very least beating down a tired team.

So the players were free from postgame Wednesday to shootaround today. Everyone showed up and they seemed to have a bit more pep.

“I noticed at shootaround today they seemed really rejuvenated,” L.D. said. “I hope it carries over to the game tonight. They seemed to be a lot spunkier. They looked to be a little fresher, there was a little vibe there. I know that was really needed because the way the schedule was the first 31. Hopefully the little break did them some good and they can come back rejuevenated.”

(The Hornets also haven’t played since Wednesday but coach Monty Williams had them practice twice since then: “I didn’t want to go into the game [after] taking two days off. It’s a long season and you have to take advantage of the breaks but at the same time you’ve got to work.”)

Jamal, Marvin, Joe, Al and Bibby all got some time to rest their nagging nicks and pains.

Jamal said he would have no physical limitations after missing five games with a sore back.

“Now it’s just going to be about getting my timing and getting my game shape back,” he said. “I am just happy to get back out there.”

Al said the swelling has gone down in his shooting hand. It’s “better” but not quite back to feeling normal.

L.D. is starting his regular lineup: Bibby, J.J., Marvin, Smoove and Al.

“We’ll start that way but we will play a lot of big lineup tonight,” L.D. said. “I want to play Al a lot at the four and just go big with Okafor at the five.”

See Pape in Utah

Pape Sy will soon join the D-League’s Utah Flash. They don’t play a game until the end of the week so it’s possible Sy will continue to practice with the Hawks until then . . .

Monty Williams on J.J.: “He plays the point from the post. He’s one of my favorite players, always has been, because he does a number of things. He draws so many double teams and he can kick it around to the open guy.”

I’m surprised not to see Teague at all yet, considering Jamal has been taking Marvin’s invisible man role tonight with lackluster effort and energy. Hopefully, L.D. will let Teague get some minutes in the second quarter. Also, I hope that Al returns to the game soon. It has been all down-hill since he left the floor. Well, it looks like Larry Drew’s stupidity has returned to him. I should have know that his few good moves in the past were too good to be true. This guy is absolute garbage. It’s arguable that he is the worst coach in the league. The rotations tonight have been horrid. Al Horford should be in the game right now, and Jamal should be out the game. Bibby and Jamal should be be playing together at the same time with the defensive deficiencies that they have. The only reason that the Hawks are even close in this one is due to some very poor play from the Hornets. Drew is such a disgrace. I’d really like for the ASG to let him go.

Sometimes, I wonder if L.D. just doesn’t like Horford. I know it might sound crazy at first, but it is really starting to seem like L.D. has some personal issue against Horford. Everyone, including L.D. knows that sitting Horford for this long is not helping the team at all. If L.D. doesn’t realize that sitting your player for entire quarters is going to result in him playing less minutes than actual foul trouble, then he doesn’t have the knowledge necessary to coach. I don’t know why we always end up getting the worst coaches in the league here in ATL. It’s so disappointing. Sometimes, I don’t even want to watch the games because I know that if even if the players play well, Larry Drew will most likely do something stupid to jeopardize the team’s chance at a win. What a disgrace.

bigdave,

My only reservation is this: How long before Al loses some early aggressiveness for wanting to stay on the floor?

I haven’t seen it yet, but it would be human nature, one would think.

Andy

December 26th, 2010
8:23 pm

I don’t think that many people really understand why the benching of Horford for entire quarters due to the perception that he is in “foul trouble” is such an issue. Bret Lagree does an excellent job explaining the pros and cons of this strategy at Hoopinion. I advise people to take a look at some of his posts.

At any rate, think of it this way. The point of sitting a player when he is in foul trouble is to preserve that player and prevent them from picking up fouls too early, so that you can maximize the use of that player. However, what Larry Drew does really defeat’s the purpose of “maximizing the use of a productive player”. L.D.’s strategy actually results in the player playing less minutes overall due to imaginary foul trouble than he would play with real foul trouble.

With Horford playing only 8 minutes in the first half (with only 2 fouls), the maximum number of minutes he could play overall could be 32 for the night, however, we all know that the chances of him playing the entire 24 minutes in the second half without a rest is extremely unlikely. So, realistically, Horford will probably play about 16 minutes, total, in the second half. That would put him at 24 minutes for the entire night, due to this imaginary perception of foul trouble.

Now, imagine a scenario in which Horford played with 2 fouls in the first quarter. The chances of him picking up a third foul in the second half are reasonably unlikely, and even if that did occur, you may be able to get an extra 6-8 minutes from Horford in the half. Starting the 3rd quarter with 3 fouls is not going to prohibit Al from being aggressive, and most likely, he will still play his regular minutes in the second half, even with 3 fouls. Unless Horford gets to 4 fouls in the third quarter, he will most likely play around 8 minutes in that quarter, and even if he did pick up a 4th foul in the third, he’d probably still play 5 or so minutes in the quarter. Then, even with 4 fouls, he could play without limitation in the fourth quarter and play at least 8 minutes. When you factor all of that in together, Horford would probably end up playing around 30 minutes anyway. So, overall, the bench treatment is a bad idea and shows a lack of knowledge.

Sautee

December 26th, 2010
8:23 pm

And the pisser about Al’s first foul is this: Horford was CLEARLY fouled by West on the rebound which was knocked away and then the ref who called Al for a foul was outside and had a bad angle (replay showed NO foul). If West had been called for HIS foul, Al’s wouldn’t have even happened.

He’s a rookie coach, maybe he’ll improve as his experience grows, maybe he won’t improve. We don’t know yet, but right now, he is definitely one of the lesser coaches in the league, definitely bottom 10.

Wow, what is up with the current lineup? I don’t know what happened to L.D. before the game, but he’s really having some issues tonight. Why would you match up Bibby on Paul (or Jack) and Marvin Williams on the 7 ft. Jason Williams? Four perimeter players and a fairly immobile center against a Hornet’s lineup with size, length, and quick guards. That’s a recipe for defeat. I hope L.D. doesn’t stick with this lineup for long. He’s really hurting us with some of these combinations. I’m still wondering what his plan in this one is.

“Not to mention the fact that Al is team’s best rebounder, most efficient scorer, best post player, statistically, he’s also the best individual post defender, and one of the best mid-range shooter on the team (stat-wise).”

try not to let your emotions towards Al impair your thought process when you when you hurry to his defense. the dialogue was based on having to sit Al w/ 2 fouls vs playing him. my point was that when we have consistent scoring coming from other areas, sitting Al does not hurt you as bad vs. those spells when nobody is making shots and you can go to the reliable pick and pop game. if we’re getting buckets throw in an equally efficient defensive presence in Collins and get stops.

and honestly nobody is afraid of Horford’s shot blocking ability. and he’s looking out muscled vs Emeka in the post. also watch how many boards he lets fly by.. or when he fails to box out his assignment.

Collins causing turnovers as we speak.

bigdave,

Again, that analysis shows a lack of basketball knowledge. It’s clear that you are missing the point here. Keep your personal vendettas to yourself. I see no reason to waste my time trying to explain fundamentals to someone who is missing them. I’ll leave you with the fact that defense is not all about shotblocking and maybe you can ponder and that you’ll start to understand things. There are so many principles that you seem to be forgetting that I’m not even going to start getting into them. At any rate, I’m not going to waste any time on a lost cause. If you can’t understand the reasoning, that’s your own problem. I’m just going to ignore your posts from now on.

P.S. – The majority of the time in which Horford was out, L.D. wasn’t using Collins at all. He was using a very small lineup with Smith at Center.

The players weren’t aggressive, the coaching was horrid, the rotations were awful, the offense had no rhythm or flow, Joe and Jamal played very selfishly, and as is the case in every loss, the Hawks completely went away from what worked. They aren’t going to get rid of drew, even is he is the worst coach in the NBA, and they aren’t going to make any trades, unless they absolutely have no alternative or the player is demanding a trade. We are stuck with a large group of annoying, passionless players, with only a few good ones on the roster, and a poor excuse for a coach who doesn’t even know how to use the only good players we have. And Josh loves to set up in the corner, with Joe filling the lane. If you’re going to lose games now, it might as well be at the expense of Teague getting experience against the best PGs in the league.

Jamal had a very tough game, which happens sometimes, but there’s no way he and Bibby should be on the court at the same time. I know that LD wants to have his two best finishers in the game, but defensively they can’t get stops. Their also useless in terms rebounding.

Even with that said there’s no excuse for Horford and Smith to get used by Okafor and West. They got abused in the 2nd on the boards. Part of the reason is Chris Paul on the pick and roll but I don’t really care! Horford has to get more boards!!

Bibby is bad, but you can’t put all of the blame on him. L.D. is the one who chose to play him huge minutes tonight, rather than even giving Teague a chance. People here have said it time and time again, Bibby and Jamal are one of the worst, if not the worst, defensive backcourt in the entire NBA, and playing both of them at the same time is asking for a loss. Not to mention that matchup up your worst perimeter defenders on the other team’s quickest and most effective perimeter players is just plain stupid. I doubt that any other coach would be playing Bibby against chris paul for that many minutes, unless he was the only guard on the roster. Hell, even at that, I’d rather have my frontcourt guard Paul.

thing is though Ramon we dont work on zone defense enough to have much success @ it.

Rookie coach or not, other than being a better “offensive” coach I’m really not seeing much difference between LD and Woodrow…Teague had finally began to play better and instead of using his quickness to guard the perimeter he left Bibby and Jamal in there to get smoked. He even used Mo at one point and he was getting torched… The best two perimeter defenders on the bench Teague and Wilkins didn’t even play. Wilkins has been better than Mo since he has been here but lately he isn’t playing for some reason…..LD took out a hot Marvin to put in a cold Josh smh.. Where the hell is this accountability i heard about all summer? What happened to if you dont play defense you sit the bench? No more developing the young guys? Looks like LD has taken a page out of Woodsons book and that is to try to get as many wins as possible and forget the other stuff. It is what it is. I know some people are going to defend LD but man his rotations and decisions and non accountability has hurt in quite a few games already.. JOSH SMITH- Likes to play point guard when he can’t control the ball, takes way too many jump shots without making one.
MARVIN WILLIAMS- Is he even part of the team? he has 3 good games every month.
JOE JOHNSON- Overrated, can’t shoot, and stops ball movement.

MOE EVANS- Straight up sucks.

bigdave “thing is though Ramon we dont work on zone defense enough to have much success @ it.”

Exactly! That’s the problem. We have Bibby and JC1 who sucks on the defensive end, and we don’t even practice much on the defense that will limit their weaknesses the most. The only thing that JC1 is decent at on defense is closing out on shooters. The zone allows him to do that and step in the passing lane effectively.

Well said, cp. I strongly agree with your 9:57 pm post. I’m very disappointed with what I’m seeing from L.D., and the lack of accountability and random rotations really drive me crazy. One thing I’d like to add though, is that even if L.D. is trying to coach to win as many games as possible, what he is doing isn’t going to win many games. The fact that he continues to make the same mistakes over and over again, makes me wonder if he just doesn’t realize that what he is doing isn’t working, or if he just doesn’t know what else to do. Same script, different director.

Hawks have 31 points in the second half. And despite Jamal’s 5 turnovers, despite Bibby’s 2-8, despite CP3 and Jack combining for 32 points, Teague did not get any minutes, despite the fact that he played well his last 3 games.

The more and more the season goes, is the more similarities I see with LD and Woody.

Honestly, people, I’m curious…can you think of 5 coaches in the league who are worse than Larry Drew? I’m having a tough time coming up with many.

The only coach that I can think of who may be legitimately worse is Kurt Rambis in Minnesota. There are several teams with worse records, but most of those teams have inferior players. The Clippers are an exception since they have a roster loaded with talent, but can never seem to figure out how to use that talent. I can’t put that on Vinnie Del Negro though, since no one has really been able to ever get the clippers going, and Del Negro did a decent job coaching the bulls, given the roster that he had. If you look at the teams below us in the east, it’s tough to find a worse coach.

I’d like to hear some opinions on this, and please don’t throw in the line that L.D. is a rookie coach. I just want to hear who you all think may be worse than L.D.. Remember, I’m talking about active NBA coaches, so there are only 29 active candidates.

Where was Teague? Bad move by LD not playing Teague unless Teague was hurt or something.

Weirdest rotation I think I have ever seen in the 4th quarter from the Hawks. We hadn’t played our bench enough (Wilkens and Teague DNP coaches decision), then we play weird bench combos. LD must have an egg nog hangover.

31 pts in the 2nd half. Must have been outrebounded by a ton in the 4th quarter also.

SteveW,

When you are playing four guards and 1 big man, you are most likely going to get out-rebounded. Also, when your one big in the lineup is guarding the other team’s point guard on the perimeter, you are going to be out-rebounded. That was only one of the issues tonight, also. Larry Drew had the the worst coaching performance (out of all coaches in the league) of the season tonight, as far as I’m concerned, and he wins that award by a landslide.

Hope the Marvin Williams haters begin stepping up. Some said if he put a few games in a row together, they would think there is hope. For his last 16 games, 11 in double figures, including:
26 @ Boston
22 vs. Philly
18 tonite
17 twice
16
15 twice – Once again the Spurs in San Antonio. Now he’s no Chris Paul or DeRon Williams, but is he starting to play a little better? Maybe LD has the key to Marvin. If so, hope he also has the key to ZaZa and Teague, because if he does, now we may have something good going on.

P.S. LD’s master plan – Use Bibby so much he tires out or gets hurt then he has to play Teague. Bibby at 41 minutes tonight, most on the team. Vs. Chris Paul and Jarrett Jack

Ronald – Can’t disagree with you. Horford at 28 minutes? Was he hurt or something. The guys at Hoopinion keep saying Horford is All NBA calibre. They just did a stat comparison between he and Dwight. Al with intangibles is closer to Dwight than many think.

They said every day ATL does not run the offense thru Al Horford is a wasted day by the Hawks franchise. Gotta agree.

SteveW,

Nothing good is going on under L.D. He doesn’t have any “key” to Marvin or anyone on the team. The only reason why Marvin is averaging more points lately is due to the fact that he is getting more shot attempts and more touches on the offensive end. This has nothing to do with L.D., it has to do with the fact that Joe and Jamal have not both been active for quite a while, so there are more attempts to go around. Marvin averaged 15 ppg under woody before Jamal arrived. This looks like the same Marvin as before, he’s just not being ignored as much as he was last season and early on this season. L.D. doesn’t have keys, he has locks. He knows how to lock up Horford, Williams, Teague, JC2, and pretty much anyone on the team who isn’t named Jamal or Joe, or who isn’t a jumpshooter. Don’t expect anything out of L.D. The guy is garbage. He’s only hurting the team, not helping. There was been no player development at all under Drew, and the players who have developed are not even used as they should be.

” One thing I’d like to add though, is that even if L.D. is trying to coach to win as many games as possible, what he is doing isn’t going to win many games. The fact that he continues to make the same mistakes over and over again, makes me wonder if he just doesn’t realize that what he is doing isn’t working, or if he just doesn’t know what else to do. ”

@Bailey, replace LD’s name with Woodson and you have the same thing from past seasons. Woodson would continue to do the same thing over and over even if it didn’t work and it drove me crazy. Last year in the playoffs during the Magic series Woodson was asked was he going to change anything or do something different and he replied no, that he was going to keep doing what got them there. New coach still no accountability… I just dont understand how Teague and Wilkins get no pt when they had been playing well defensively recently.

SteveW,

Horford wasn’t hurt, L.D. just chose to bench him for the majority of the first quarter again. By the way, I agree with the Hoopinion people as well, and I like the fact that they have hard evidence to back up their claims. There is some good content on that site. By the way, they are not the only ones who see the value in Horford. NBA.com had him in the their last “Race to the MVP” segment. If only L.D. saw the value that he had in Horford.

You’re right, cp. The similarities between Woody and L.D. are becoming more and more apparent by the day. I was really hoping that we would get an expeirenced coach that was brand new to our team, that way we would have a different foundation building and not a continuation of what we’ve been frustrated with for years. But, you know what they say, you get what you pay for.

You’re spot on with your comments on Josh, drmaryb. If there was one positive thing that came out of Woodson’s coaching, it was the fact that he actually had Josh playing inside and refraining from taking long jump shots and threes. It’s funny that it took Woodson six years to accomplish that feat, and after all of that work, it took Josh about six minutes to revert back and convince himself that he is Ray Allen.

drmaryb,

Josh has been working on his jump shot over the summer. I want him to take that shot with confidence. I love jump shots. That’s what my system is all about. I need to have as many jumpshooters on the floor at once as I possibly can, as long as their names aren’t Al…I like him to sit on the bench and watch. We just need to get into a rhythm on our jump shots. I need shotmakers in the game, that’s why I play Bibby and Jamal together, they are shot makers. Sometimes, we just miss our jumpshots, but I want us to take more. I want Joe and Jamal to take 20 shots a night, at a minimum, or however many it takes for them to score at least 15 points, and I need Bibby out there to direct traffic by passing the ball to either Joe or Jamal for more jumpshots. I can’t play Teague, he has an ugly jump shot, and sometimes he passes the ball to Al in the post. I hate that. I don’t want Al to get shots, especially not in the post where he shoots at 60+%. A shot for Al is taking away from my other jumpshooters. I Teague sometimes tries to get into the seems of the defense and puts up floaters. Floaters are ugly, I want jump shots, damn it! Damien just doesn’t have the type of jumpshot that I like. I like that smooth shooting stroke. I’m going to start playing Mo more, because he has just the kind of brick-laying jump shot that I used to have when I played. We need to maximize the number of jumpshots that we are taking. Any shot inside of 15 feet is getting my guys a trip to the bench, and if anyone passes the ball to Al, instead of Jamal or Joe, I’m sitting them down. I need to start playing Josh Powell more minutes. I love his jump shot. I’m trying to find just the right combination of players, so that everyone on the floor is shooting jump shots, all of the time.

Down the stretch, you might not see as many players getting jump shots, because I need to turn to my clutch shooters down the stretch. Joe, Jamal, and Bibby are shot makers. I need to Joe to dribble the air out of the ball until he gets into a rhythm.I want him to pull up for a jump shot right before the end of the clock on each possession down the stretch. His jump shot is unbelievable. I dream about it sometimes. Don’t worry if we are struggling, we just need to take more jump shots.

Unfortunately it is too late for Josh to learn how to shoot a “pro” jump shot. His mechanics stink. He never learned when he was growing up. He’s all ready pre-wired, that’s why he looks so awkward when he takes his set shot. Add on top of that he’s not a scorer even though he thinks in his mind he is.Plus he has no handle. His body language says fail every time he faces the basket with his two left feet. Its just brutal to watch a “PRO” who on the offensive side of the ball has not even graduated high school. So he easily gets frustrated because of his severe lack of offensive skills at the pro level..It becomes a major liability at “crunch” time in the 4th quarter. Means your team gets smoke come playoff time…..AGAIN…
